It’s Wiggle Waggle Walk Time! Let’s go! The 15th Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk parades back to Brookside Park on Sunday, September 29. Join thousands of animal lovers and their four-legged friends for a fun-filled community dog walk, fundraiser and Pet expo. The Wiggle Waggle Walk is our largest fundraiser of the year. Our goal is to raise $400,000 to help provide shelter, food and veterinary care for the nearly 12,000 animals cared for every year at the Pasadena Humane Society. Funds raised from the Wiggle Waggle Walk will benefit all the animals that come through our open doors including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, wildlife and more. “This is truly an awesome event,” says Karen Kiefaber, Chairman of the PHS Board. “I’ve attended the Walk for many years now and it keeps getting better and bigger. Seeing so many people united to help the animals is just as heartwarming as it is a testament to PHS’ mission. It’s a great day for the animals we care for.”
Make sure to watch Anne and Wil Wheaton’s Wiggle Waggle Walk video at wigglewagglewalk.org, featuring their pup Marlowe (adopted from PHS last year) getting ready for the big day! Taken from Marlowe’s point-of-view, the video gives a candid look at what to expect at the Walk—the fun, the playing, the walking and slobbering too! (continued on back page)
compassion and care for all animals
leader of the pack The Wiggle Waggle Walk for the Animals is the signature event of the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. People and their dogs from all over Southern California participate by supporting teams, and raising much needed funds for our animal care programs. Although dogs are doing the walking, the Walk supports all of the animals helped by PHS. This fun event sustains the serious work we do each day. Last year’s Walk raised over $300,000 for the animals but we hope to reach $400,000 in 2013! Because the day is so much fun, the Walk is also a friend raiser for PHS. Check out Marlowe’s video to see how much fun she had last year! Our community of animal lovers is always expanding and always welcome at the Walk! We have costume contests for you and your pet, police K-9 demonstrations and lots of animal-related vendors. Thousands of dogs and their owners gather to support our work for less fortunate animals. To form or join a team, fetch information at www.wigglewagglewalk.org. Teamwork is essential for more than the success of the Walk. All of our events rely on a group of supporters working towards the common goal of helping animals. The new Animal Care Center, the combination of support from our community and the vision of staff, is fueled by the goal of keeping pets in their home and ending the euthanasia of adoptable animals. Funded by private donations, the Center will be a beacon for the future of animal welfare. PHS works closely with each of our cities to provide programs that answer the needs of residents and animals, whether through licensing, animal control, affordable spay/neuter surgery, or vaccination clinics. And you are an integral part of our team—we could not accomplish all that we can accomplish without you. We appreciate your support. I’ll see you at the Wiggle Waggle Walk at Brookside Park on Sunday, September 29! For the animals.

coMMUnitY heroeS Reggie’s Rascals to the Rescue JoAnn Turovsky has participated in the Wiggle Waggle Walk, Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA’s largest community fundraiser of the year, since the very first event which was 15 years ago, at Lacy Park. She has been the top donor for the event and is an inspiration to everyone in our community who participates in the Walk.
to contribute to PHS. Her level of involvement has increased over the years as she enjoys sharing the happiness and bounty that she has with her dogs, with the shelter. JoAnn’s her team is named Reggie’s Rascals and instead of giving gifts to friends this year, she plans
JoAnn is a musician and all of her animals, Reggie, Max (who was adopted from PHS) and Nike like to hangout with her while she practices. They even enjoy keeping her students company. She credits her animal companions with increasing her desirability as a teacher because her young students enjoy spending time with them so much. “Animals are so different from people in terms of their companionship, their lack of ego and desire to please, make having them around very comforting. They live for the moment and love life. They are a good example, their behavior is exemplary and I like to emulate their behavior.” JoAnn credits her “philanthropic attitude for animals in need” and the “level of care for the animals” at PHS as the reasons she continues to support the Wiggle Waggle Walk. She initially became involved because she found that the Wiggle Waggle Walk was such an easy way for her
to give gifts in their honor to PHS for the Wiggle Waggle Walk. She hopes that her friends will follow her example as her birthday is conveniently near the event. JoAnn is our community hero because she inspires others to help animals in need through her actions. The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is grateful for the ongoing support from JoAnn, Reggie, Max and Nike. We look forward to seeing Reggie’s Rascals at the event on September 29, 2013 and hope that they continue to support the event for years to come.

IRA Charitable Rollover The IRA Charitable Rollover was extended through the end of the year, allowing individuals age 701/2 and older to make direct transfers totaling up to $100,000 per year to 501(c)(3) organizations, without having to count the gift as income for federal income tax purposes.
Please consider making a gift to help animals in need by transferring funds directly from your IRA, to the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. The Federal tax implications are that you do not have to recognize the gift to PHS as income, provided it is transferred directly from the IRA provider to PHS. behavior & training Q A Tips and Myths About Pets Q: I am really excited about going to the Wiggle Waggle Walk this year, but my dog barks at dogs when he’s on the leash. Should we still go?
A: If your dog tends to become reactive or vocal on walks, or if he has shown aggression in the past, it is wise to leave him/her at home. These are indicators that your dog might not enjoy the company of other dogs and may be more stressed when forced to be near or interact with other dogs. It is okay to bring your dog along and not allow nose-to-nose greetings. Just be mindful of the dogs and space around you, and step in quickly to prevent those encounters. Remember: it is not necessary for your dog to greet each and every dog, but it is important that he is happy and having fun. Either way know that YOU, with or without a dog, are always welcome to participate in the Walk.
Q: M y dog pulls constantly when we are out on walks. My friend suggested using a choke chain or a prong collar to stop the pulling, but I’m not sure if that is a good idea. Any other suggestions?
A: There are a couple pieces of equipment that can help deter pulling and are less physically hurtful to your dog. For moderate pullers, we recommend a front-clipping harness such as the Easy Walk Harness. This helps to stop the pulling by giving the dog a slight correction and turning the dog back towards the handler. Avoid any back-clipping harness which gives the dog more leverage and facilitates stronger pulling. For really determined pullers, try a head collar, like the Gentle Leader. It works by controlling the dog’s head in the same way a bridle does on a horse and it may take a week for your dog to adjust to it. Remember, it is not a muzzle and the dog can continue to eat, drink, pant and bark while wearing the collar.
