You’ll receive the best, dedicated care possible.”

compassion and care for all animals

leader of the pack It is 2014 and the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA has taken animal welfare to a new level. PHS welcomes the City of Monrovia to our service area. Beginning January 1, 2014, PHS is partnering with the City of Monrovia to provide animal care and control for its animals and licensing for its dogs. We look forward to a successful partnership. The Animal Care Campus is now open to everyone and the programs that promise to keep animals in their homes and reduce euthanasia of placeable animals have begun. The Spay/Neuter clinic is open five days a week and appointments are no longer restricted to animals in our service area. Vaccinations for pets are available at affordable prices on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Providing preventative care for pets is very important to us. The Shelter Shop has moved to a new, larger space, right at the corner of Del Mar and Raymond. You will still find the high quality food, great toys, treats and everything you could want to keep your pet happy. Find your weekly store special in our e-newsletter every Wednesday. February will mark the beginning of training and fun and game classes and the launch of our dog daycare program as well. Our underground parking makes all of this easily accessible. So come visit PHS and the animals. Our doors are open! The Animal Care Campus is the tangible feature of our commitment to a humane community. By expanding our work to keep pets in their homes and out of animal shelters, to reduce the number of unwanted pets born, and to provide affordable options for animal care, PHS is working for a more compassionate future for all animals. Our donors and supporters share this commitment and belief in a more humane future. Your help and support are essential to our success. For the animals.

Community heroes A Little Love Goes a Long Way You can find true love when you least expect it. For Jo Jardon, it happened the day she met Coco at the Pasadena Humane Society. After a whole month of daily and sometimes twice-a-day visits to PHS to find her animal companion, Jo just happened to steal a glance at Coco. He had just arrived at PHS with his left eye severely damaged and was on his way to receive immediate medical care. At this moment, Jo knew he was the one. She adopted him on the spot but had to wait another month to take him home, as he needed extensive medical care from PHS staff. His eye had to be removed and he needed extra special treatment as he recovered. The day he was ready to go home, Jo rushed over to pick him up. From there, the love affair blossomed. Four years later, Coco is fully recovered and can get around just fine with one eye. He has become a snuggler who loves his tummy rubbed, nightly treats and time with his companion, Jo. Nothing is more powerful than true love; it can change our lives and the communities we live in for the better. The love between Jo and Coco has inspired her to become a vital supporter of PHS and the animals in our community. Giving more than $1 million to the Campaign to Save Lives, her support was instrumental in ensuring the build-

ing of the new Animal Care Center became a reality. “I’m getting older and love animals so I thought it would be great to support the new building. It’s going to be a wonderful place and add to our city. It’s a beautiful building.” The Campaign to Save Lives has been funded mainly by support from individuals and community heroes like Jo Jardon. PHS is grateful for the overwhelming community support for the project and looks forward to a bright future for animals.

behavior & training Q A Tips and Myths About Pets Q: I am interested in signing my dog up for your daycare. How will it differ from other dog daycare centers?

A: Our daycare center has indoor and outdoor play areas for your dog. We offer convenient pick up and drop off. Staff are specialized in dog behavior and training. Our daycare not only offers off-leash play for physical enrichment but also mental enrichment with specialized training each day. Mental enrichment includes working with your dog on agility equipment, teaching new commands, playing individually with your dog using mentally stimulating toys, and much, much more. It is important that your dog exercise not only the body but the mind as well. Mental exercise can be worth as much as 30 minutes of physical exercise. Our daycare makes sure your dog gets both while being monitored by expert staff. It’s more like sending your dog to school with recess rather than all day recess. With our new boarding area adjacent to the training center, you can make sure your dog has fun while you’re on vacation having fun! Best of all, the money generated from the daycare goes directly to help our shelter animals.

Q: A re you offering more classes in your new training facility? A: We are currently planning our 2014 classes and are excited by all the possibilities! Our plan is to offer our ever popular classes like Puppy Kindergarten, Basic Obedience and Reactive Rovers, as well as new classes and seminars. Whether your dog is a therapy dog in the making or shy and fearful hiding behind you for support, we will have a class for you. We will expand our Treibball class and be able to start teaching Agility classes again. Plans are underway to offer shy/fearful dog classes, therapy dog classes, and nose work classes. We will host more educational seminars for training professionals and dog owners who want to learn more about their furry family members. We have exciting seminars in store for cat owners too! It’s an exciting time at the Pasadena Humane Society so keep checking our website for the latest offerings.
