leader of the pack It’s springtime in our foothill communities so I want to reprint a previous column on baby wildlife. At this time of year, you may notice baby wildlife. Well-intentioned residents may find solitary babies and think the animal is orphaned. However, most of these babies are being taught to survive on their own and their parents are nearby. It is best to leave the babies alone since removing them greatly reduces their chance of survival. Nestlings (featherless birds) that have fallen out of a tree can be replaced in their nest very safely. The mother bird will accept them. If you cannot find the nest, create one using a small box or margarine tub. Put holes in the bottom for drainage. Fledgling birds (feathered, but are learning to fly) are often found hopping around under trees. If they are in no danger of being attacked by predators, leave them alone. Place The mother will continue to take care of the fledglings until they are able to fly, usually in a few days. Mammals rarely abandon their young. However, rabbits and deer may be away from their young from dawn to dusk. If you see a baby mammal observe it from a distance for 2-3 hours. If the mother does not return, call PHS for advice. Young that are injured or bleeding, or have heavy discharge from their eyes or nose need to be rescued. Any animal needs to be rescued that is cold to the touch, making continuous distress calls, or has no mother. To rescue a baby animal, put it in a small box and keep the box in a warm, dark and quiet place. Do not give it anything to eat. Immediately contact us at 626.792.7151. For more wildlife tips, visit pasadenahumane.org/wildlife. The San Marino Motor Classic will be held on Sunday, June 8, at Lacy Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in San Marino with a wide variety of Brass Era cars, Depression Era classics and Post-War luxury and sports cars. Last year, PHS received over $100,000 from the event. Tickets are $25 and you can even bring your canine companion. By buying tickets through PHS (at pasadenahumane.org/smmc) you will support the life saving programs of PHS. I look forward to seeing you for a beautiful day at Lacy Park. For the animals,

Community heroes Aaron and Valerie Weiss Aaron Weiss’s life-long interest in automobiles, matched with his wife Valerie’s love of animals, has made a world of difference for the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. As chairman and cofounder of the San Marino Motor Classic, he has contributed countless hours and loaned his personal car collection to the event all to help raise funds for PHS. Weiss and two others founded the San Marino Motor Classic in 2011 after the decision was made not to continue the Los Angeles Concours d’Elegance. To date, the event has raised more than $330,000 to support PHS programs and services. The San Marino Motor Classic will take place on Sunday, June 8 in Lacy Park and offer car enthusiasts a mixture of classic cars and a contemporary Concours d’Elegance, while providing local residents and businesses with the opportunity to highlight their neighborhoods and services. “This year’s event will feature approximately 30 classes of cars with more than 200 classic and rare cars expected,” Weiss said. Along with his commitment to the San Marino Motor Classic, Weiss and his wife have hosted Classic Car Club and other community events at their Flying A Garage. Select cars of Weiss’ extensive

collection have been exhibited at the Petersen Automotive Museum, Classic Car Club of America, Cadillac LaSalle Club, ACD, Packards International, PAC, Buick Owners Association.and the Rolls-Royce Owners Club. Aaron and Valerie Weiss are our community heroes because of his leadership of the San Marino Motor Classic, along with their devotion to the community and support of the animals. PHS is extremely thankful for their ongoing support. Tickets for this year’s event are available online for $25 by visiting pasadenahumane.org/ smmc. behavior & training Q A Tips and Myths About Pets Q: M y cat seems very interested in going outside. Is it appropriate to allow an indoor cat to do so?

A: The benefits of keeping cats indoors are multiple. First, it’s good for their health. Indoor cats tend to live longer, healthier lives. The average lifespan of an indoor cat is about 14 years while that of an unsupervised indoor/outdoor drops to a mere 4 years! Second, staying indoors decreases their chances of being exposed various illnesses, being attacked by other animals, or even being hit by a car. Last, it decreases their chances of running away and becoming lost. Your home is a fun and safe environment for your cat. Invest in enriching toys to keep your cats stimulated. Simple items such as cardboard boxes and paper towel rolls can be a fun and inexpensive toy. Cats love to sun bathe. Installing a window perch will provide a great view of the outdoors with indoor safety. Spruce up the house with a kitty condo or a cat tree to enhance your feline friend’s indoor experience. PHS recommends all pets wear current ID tags and be microchipped just in case.

Q: I think I might be allergic to my cat. I want to keep him but what can I do?

A: Here are some helpful tips to minimize the effects of allergies: Keep the bedroom off limits to your cat and keep the litter box clean. (Allergens can be found in urine; litter dust can also be an irritant.) Wash your hands after petting your cat to remove allergens. If your home is carpeted, have your carpets steam cleaned on a regular basis. Use an allergen proof vacuum cleaner bag or vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. Use a HEPA air purifier, especially in the bedroom. Brush your cat in a fresh air enclosure to prevent allergen-carrying hair from settling in your house. Daily use of cleansing wipes will remove dander and saliva. Using wipes is also low stress option to bathing your cat. The Pasadena Humane Society carries a small selection of pet wipes in our Shelter Shop. Talk with your doctor to discuss different options for allergy relief.

happy tails One Lucky Black Cat Last February, a 12-year-old black cat was rescued from an apartment fire by the Glendale Fire Department. The cat was unresponsive. Fire fighters began the arduous task of reviving her with the help of an oxygen mask designed for animals. When she began breathing, she was taken to a veterinary hos-

pital to recover. Once given a clean bill of health, she was brought to PHS so she could find a forever home. A month passed and the cat, dubbed “Glinda” by PHS staff, was not reclaimed by her owners. On March 12, 2013 her luck changed for the better. It’s been more than a year now and Midnight is living happily in her forever home. We thank the Glendale Fire Department for saving this fancy feline, as well as Midnight’s adopter for giving her second chance at life along with her fur-sibling Mayhem. Midnight,

coincidentally now 13, is proof that black cats are quite lucky. “She is happy, comfortable, playful, affectionate, healthy, content,” says Midnight’s adopter. “I don’t know about that estimated 13 years old, she seems younger.” Watch video of Midnight’s rescue, view photos and
