It’s Wiggle Waggle Walk Time! Let’s go! The 16th Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk parades back to Brookside Park on Sunday, September 28. Join thousands of animal lovers and their four-legged friends for a fun-filled community dog walk, fundraiser and Pet Expo. The Wiggle Waggle Walk is our largest fundraiser of the year. Our goal is to raise $375,000 to help provide shelter, food and veterinary care for nearly 12,000 animals cared for every year at the Pasadena Humane Society. Funds raised from the Wiggle Waggle Walk will benefit all the animals that come through our open doors including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, wildlife and more. “This is our biggest day of the year,” says Karen Kiefaber, Chairperson of the PHS Board. “I’ve attended the Walk for many years now and it keeps getting better and bigger. Seeing so many people united to help the animals is heartwarming and a testament to PHS’ mission. It’s a great day for all animals in our community.”
Participants who raise or give $1,000 or more will receive VIP status this year which includes VIP registration, access to the VIP tent, a red carpet opportunity, food, drinks, free giveaways and much more. Arrive at 8 a.m. to register, then let the fun begin with the Walk at 9 a.m. Participants and their canine companions (continued on back page)
compassion and care for all animals
LEADER OF THE PACK Sometimes it’s hard to believe that even now, there are too few homes for the amount of companion animals born. The tragedy of pet overpopulation leads to abandoned and homeless animals and increased euthanasia rates. Spay/neuter surgery remains the best way to get a handle on pet overpopulation. The City of Pasadena is considering an ordinance to mandate that dogs or cats 6 months or older be spayed or neutered, with exemptions for certain circumstances. The City is bravely trying to reduce the number of unwanted animals in this community. Unfortunately, the issue has become very contentious. Pet overpopulation is a problem that our staff sees on a daily basis and our staff knows that spay and neuter surgery has an immediate effect on the problem. PHS has been offering low cost spay/neuter options to pet owners for over a decade. The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA supports this ordinance. It is a very humane answer to a tragic problem. On Sunday, September 28, our signature event, the Wiggle Waggle Walk for the Animals raises much-needed funds for our animal care programs. Although dogs (and people) do the walking, this event supports all of the animals that need our care. In 2013 the Walk raised over $350,000 but we hope to reach $375,000 in 2014! This fun-filled day is a friend-raiser as well for PHS, a chance for the ever expanding community of animal lovers to get together and support a common cause. But the Walk also celebrates everyone who works in the field of animal welfare— from humane officers who rescue animals at risk, adoption counselors who place abandoned animals in good homes, to the veterinary health staff who care for the injured and sick animals. The Walk unites us to celebrate the life saving work of animal welfare. We appreciate your support and hope to see you at Brookside Park for this year’s Wiggle Waggle Walk. For the animals.

COMMUNITY HEROES
The Breeze Brothers Some of the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA’s biggest supporters are not yet old enough to operate a vehicle; however, their love of animals drives them to raise funds for the annual Wiggle Waggle Walk.
Matthew and Drew do not limit their support strictly to Walk season. Last December, as they received their holiday gifts, they decided they wanted to share the experience with the animals. The boys went to their local pet store, loaded up on pet toys and
For brothers, Matthew and Drew Breeze, ages 13 and 11, volunteering at PHS is a family affair. They both grew up listening to the stories their great-grandmother told of volunteering at the shelter and were eager to help the animals in need as well. Matthew and Drew started participating in the Wiggle Waggle Walk eight years ago, with their fundraising goal growing each year. The Breeze brothers were able to raise $2,625 last year by asking their friends and family to support their efforts by donating to their Walk page, http://www.pasadenahumane.org/goto/breezebrothers . This year they have plans to branch out and try other fundraising ideas for the 16th Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk, including bake sales. Matthew and Drew are quick to point out that their mother, Hilary Breeze, deserves credit as well.
distributed the toys to the animals. When Matthew and Drew are not fundraising for PHS, or trudging through their homework, they enjoy walking and cuddling with their two dogs. Taz, a Golden Retriever is seven years old, and Peanut, a Jack Russell Terrier is one year old. Matthew and Drew Breeze are our Community Heroes because of their commitment to our annual fundraiser, the Wiggle Waggle Walk, and they exemplify that you are never too young to speak on behalf of the animals.

WIGGLE WAGGLE WALK SAFETY Enjoy the Walk! Best Time Ever The Wiggle Waggle Walk is the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA’s biggest dog party as thousands of two-legged and four-legged personalities come together to support the shelter, walk and have fun. The Pasadena Humane Society wants to make sure you have the best and safest time possible. Here are some tips that will keep your Wiggle Waggle Walk experience in the best-time-ever category.
Rest and Replenish Your dog will be in the midst of interesting sights, sounds, scents and
excitement. This can overload your dog’s senses and cause stress. Be sensitive to any signs of stress and give her some down time. Find a quieter, less populated spot to sit down with your dog. Give her some time to be by herself and de-stress. Take this time to have some water (both of you) and a little rest.
Body Language: Stop & Go There is a lot of meeting and greeting between dogs at the Wiggle Waggle Walk. Here are some basic stop-andgo dog body language cues you can look for to make sure your dog, and other dogs, stay safe:
STOP
GO
> HARD STARING
> PLAY BOW
> TIGHT MOUTH
> WRIGGLEY BODY/ FULL BODY WAG
> TUCKED TAIL
> CIRCLING FOR A HIND SNIFF
> HIGH STIFF TAIL > TRYING TO MOVE AWAY If you see a dog with a yellow ribbon or something yellow on the leash, this dog needs space. Please do not approach this dog with your dog. Make sure to maintain some distance or give this dog and her person time to move out of your way before proceeding. With these tips you are better prepared for a wiggle waggle walking good time. Please come by the Humane Education Booth where we will have information and lots of fun activities there waiting for you and your furry friend.
