Greeting, The Pasadena Humane Society’s mission statement—compassion and care for all animals—is served every single hour of every day by our incredible staff and amazing volunteers who work tirelessly to make the best life possible for the animals in our care. The Pasadena Humane Society is an open door shelter and will never, ever turn away an animal from our service area. In 2010, the Pasadena Humane Society >> received 12,017 animals >> adopted 4,040 companion animals into loving homes or placed with a rescue partner >> spayed or neutered 4,851 companion animals >> airlifted 91 Chihuahuas to Richmond SPCA >> graduated 443 dogs from community training classes >> visited 115 sites with the new mobile outreach unit In 2010 the Behavior Department, under a dedicated and enthusiastic staff, not only increased the number of classes available but also introduced new formats. Shelter School is one of the new classes that with solid volunteer support provides enrichment and basic obedience training for dogs in the shelter, thereby enhancing their adoptability. In 2010, the Pasadena Humane Society Mobile Outreach program got a new set of wheels and a whole new look. The vision of the coordinator combined with the dedication of volunteers has increased adoptions and awareness of the services available to our communities. As always, this past year has seen challenges, the most significant being the rescue of over 250 cats living in an unbelievably squalid environment. I was on site the night these 250 cats were rescued by the Pasadena Humane Society and saw, in action, each and every PHS staff member being professional, efficient and so caring under the most difficult circumstances imaginable. Outrage and media attention has waned, but PHS staff continues to care daily for these cats and to insure that the regular life of the shelter goes on. Since 1903, the Pasadena Humane Society has provided shelter for every animal from its service area. 2010 has been an extraordinary year, but, as always, PHS has answered the call and provided care to all our animals, and exemplary service to our communities and residents.

Dear Friends, The Pasadena Humane Society is an open door facility. That means that all animals within our 7 service cities will receive, food, humane treatment, clean housing and veterinary care the moment they enter the shelter. No animal in need is turned away. Our programs are fine tuned to the needs of the animals in our community. Our adoption and education departments, Mobile Outreach Unit, and training and activity classes focus on strengthening the special bond between pets and their owners. While in the shelter, staff works to keep potential pets healthy, enriched, and adoptable. Occasionally, an event occurs to challenge this balance, as happened in December of 2010. Our Humane Officers were called to investigate the condition of some animals in a small structure in Pasadena. They discovered 250 cats living in squalid conditions in a 600 square foot space. The cats were transported to our shelter immediately. PHS has handled many similar cases, but this is the largest in our history. These cases are very complicated. Thanks to media exposure, the public is aware that people begin by trying to do the right thing. They are animal lovers who in the end crossed a boundary and are unable to stop. They deserve our sympathy and compassion. But little has been said to address the consequences that caring for the animal victims takes on shelters and staff. Months of providing basic care and becoming attached to animals that cannot leave the shelter takes a tremendous toll on the people who care so deeply. Some shelter staff may become casualties of compassion fatigue. The cost of housing the animals is another facet that has been unexplored. Shelter, food, medications, and temporary staff are unbudgeted expenses that must be addressed during a hoarding investigation. The expenses continue, potentially, through the length of a court case. The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is fortunate to have generous supporters and volunteers as well as an extremely dedicated staff. Although each year brings unknown challenges, PHS continues to be prepared.

The work of every employee at the PHS & SPCA reflects our mission statement: Compassion and Care for all Animals. Our programs are developed to provide high quality care to animals that need it. As an open door facility, PHS will never deny care to any animal from our service area, for any reason.
PHS is equipped to handle emergencies, from natural disasters to the rescue of large numbers of animals. Our communities and residents know that PHS is available for them when we are needed. PHS stands ready to help animals in any situation.
Both the Fun and Games and Obedience classes help maintain the special bond between human and animal. Reinforcing this bond helps keep animals in their homes and out of the shelter, thereby helping to reduce euthanasia of adoptable animals. In 2010, new classes were added to the roster that included: Doga, Intermediate Agility and Stop Drop & Roll Tricks.
In 2010, 4,040 pets were adopted into new loving homes or placed with one of our rescue partners. These included cats dogs, and rabbits as well as birds, snakes, turtles, and hamsters. PHS has an animal for almost everyone who wants a pet.
The Mobile Outreach Program, our shelter on wheels, brings animals and information about programs to events and businesses in our service cities. In 2010, the Unit increased the number of stops, the amount of donations collected and the number of dogs adopted after they have made an appearance with the Mobile.
Making Connections Adoptions Adopting pets into forever homes is something we love to do! In 2010, 4,040 pets were adopted into loving homes, placed with one of our rescue partners or transferred to another sheltering agency. This is an increase of 1.5% from 2009. Among the animals adopted, 1,336 cats, 1,736 dogs, 65 rabbits, 27 hamsters, 19 turtles and 3 lizards found new homes with the guidance of our experienced adoption staff. In 2010, PHS fostered 182 animals of which 157 were adopted and 18 were sent to one of our rescue partners. These included cats, dogs, rabbits and turtles. Our placement rate is 93.05% for cats and 96.8% for dogs and shows that is PHS a great place to find a pet.
Rescue Through our rescue partnerships, we have given 715 animals a third chance. This is an increase of 20.2% over the previous year. Specifically, our new partnership with Richmond SPCA (Virginia) allowed us to send them over 90 dogs in our kennels that were overlooked by the public. Through strengthening continuing local partnerships and developing new alliances in other states, PHS has been able to give more animals another chance. In addition to 499 dogs and 72 cats, PHS found placement for 25 birds, 32 rabbits, 35 turtles, 18 guinea pigs, 10 chinchillas, 3 hamsters and 19 rats! A ferret and a tortoise were also brought to a rescue facility.
Cats Late December 15, 2010, our Animal Control officers and staff rescued 250 cats from a 600 square foot bungalow. Our immediate concern was the condition of the cats that, thankfully, were in reasonably good condition. Staff began developing a system to care for the cats that could be enveloped into their usual work. A steadfast partnership between staff and volunteers was essential to make the program successful. New schedules of cleaning, feeding and care for the cats were developed so that the responsibility was shared appropriately and did fall to one department. Because the cats are part of an investigation, considered evidence and owned by a private party, PHS knew we would be caring for the animals for a long time. Although some of the cats have been relinquished to us by the owner and some of these have been adopted, the other cats will be in our care for an unknown time.

Our volunteers give their time generously. In 2010, over 400 volunteers gave over 26,000 hours for the animals. The difference they make is felt by every animal.
Behavior and Canine College The Behavior Department is responsible for assessing and enriching the animals that come into the shelter. At the same time the department offers programs and classes for the public that strengthen and enrich the human animal bond that is so important in keeping pets in their homes.
Shelter Programs In 2010, we began Shelter School, an enrichment program for dogs to keep them interested, active, and adoptable. All graduates of Shelter School, a total of 112 dogs earned a Blue Ribbon, which meant they knew the following generalized commands: sit, down, stay. The Behavior & Training department evaluated a total of 2,084 dogs and 528 cats. Each potential pet was assigned to a modification program to enhance its adoptability through appropriate enrichment.
Programs for the Public Because we realize that pet owners want to have fun with their pets as well as train their pets, this department refined classes into Activity classes and Obedience classes. New classes included Doga, Stop, Drop & Roll: Tricks, and Fun & Games and Intermediate Agility. With a total of 443 graduates, participation in classes increased by 9.25%.

The Behavior and Training Department provides an enriching environment for shelter animals and ongoing support, classes and opportunities for people and their pets. In 2010, this staff evaluated 2084 dogs and 528 cats. Each pet was assigned to a modification program to enhance its adoptability.
Information Technology PHS continues to upgrade usable equipment where possible to provide faster and more efficient machines while keeping costs down. Older screens are being replaced with new LCD screens and older computers that can no longer be repaired are being replaced.
Website Our social media presence, using Facebook, increased 266% in 2010. We are adding “Facebook Connect� to our website, so user registration is as easy as logging in with Facebook. This in turn, captures relevant user data to add to our own constituent database. Our online presence keeps costs down while giving PHS the ability to expand its community. In 2010, our online donations reached $318,833. Although PHS has been able to accept online ticketed sales/registration for the Wiggle Waggle Walk for a while, we are now able to do that for seminars and events, increasing convenience for our online visitors.

Building Awareness Educational Outreach This department teaches the value of compassion and care for all animals through programs for students of all ages. These programs prepare students to be responsible pet owners and plant the seeds for a humane community in the future. In 2010, they hosted 195 programs at the facility and participated in 621 off-site programs. The department hosted many continuing education programs that included expert workshops, American Humane training, seminars and programs of interest to the public. Popular summer workshops were filled with school age children during the summer. The public’s generosity was apparent through donations both monetary and in-kind and scout troops supported the animals with donations that ranged from treats to toys!
Mobile Outreach Under new leadership, the Mobile Outreach Program now includes more events each week—we have become even more mobile! Besides our traditional stops throughout our service cities, the unit has attended other venues that include environmental fairs, emergency response expos, and several events at the Rose Bowl. Although the list of events is very long, of course, attendance at the Wiggle Waggle Walk was a highlight. Schools have hosted the Mobile Outreach Unit. To reflect school participation, an optional program is available that allows the school’s students to work with Mobile Volunteers at their site to assist in showcasing our animals during an event. While the list of Mobile Volunteers remains fluid, approximately 60 volunteers are on call at any given time. Generally, 5 to 10 volunteers attend each event, resulting in a total estimated 5,500 hours of volunteer time for the year. To facilitate a professional appearance at each location, the coordinator developed a handbook that provides guidelines and expectations for all volunteers at any event. A Mobile Volunteers Workshop includes a discussion of handbook policies and culminates in a demonstration of dog handling by the Behavior Staff. Seasoned volunteers and new volunteers are expected to attend at least one workshop.

From mid- April through December of 2010, passersby gave donations of approximately $2,500 to the Mobile Unit, and $8,000 was donated by VCA Charities as a direct result of the Mobile Outreach Unit having attended their event at the Rose Bowl. A beautiful new colorful wrap on the unit itself has significantly increased the visibility of the Mobile Unit and frequently solicits waves from other drivers and pedestrians as it is driven throughout the area. Finally, adding to the safety and security of passengers aboard the Mobile Unit, rotating amber emergency lights were added at the front and back. Lastly, but most importantly, have been the results of the program. The Outreach Program presents a microcosm of the Pasadena Humane Society itself and includes an information table at each stop. While cats attend Mobile events on just a few occasions, dogs are a part of nearly every event. Nearly all of the dogs that have been taken out on mobile events have been adopted or rescued. This amounts to an estimated 300 dogs between April and December of 2010.
Community Resources Whether you are online, watching television or reading the newspaper, you can find information about animal related issues that has been provided by the Pasadena Humane Society. The website has extended our online community to include viewers from all over the world. Important issues are viewed on television networks throughout the country and our local newspapers and magazines look to PHS for the most current information. In 2010, our website community grew 266% as we added Facebook to our online outreach. We continued the very popular Glendale TV show, The Dog House, where, in 24 episodes, 164 animals got another chance to be “discovered�. Television news crews were visible as they recorded events in out area. In 2010, the department sent 224 pets of the week to area newspapers and over 200 print and online articles that included the Pasadena Humane Society were published.

In 2010, our Animal Control officers answered an average of 54.16 calls each day. From picking up strays to investigating potential charges of cruelty and neglect, an officer is available to help animals 24/7.
Asilomar Statistics According to the uniform method of collecting and reporting data developed in 2004, the Placement Rates for the Pasadena Humane Society for adoptable dogs and cats are: Cats: 93.05% | Dogs 96.76% These rates are determined by the status of the animal when it enters the shelter (intake). Of the 1,805 cats and 491 dogs that were humanely euthanized in 2010, 250 (10.86% were animals for which no placement could be found; 1,241 (54.06%) we had serious medical issues; 619 (35.08%) were animals (including feral cats) with behavior issues such as extreme aggression or fear. The criteria used are in accordance with the Asilomar Accords.

Wildlife Coyotes were the subject of much interest for this department in 2010. Since our service area involves foothill communities, coyotes are abundant. PHS worked closely with the city of Arcadia and interest groups to change a policy on coyotes to one that is both humane and effective. Our officers spent many hours promoting coexistence with wildlife and teaching ways to manage issues that area wildlife might present to residents of foothill communities.

Spay Neuter Surgeries Because Spay Neuter surgery is one of our most effective ways to stop pet overpopulation, the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA not only sterilizes each cat, dog and rabbit that is adopted, but also operates a public, low cost spay neuter clinic (SNiP) for residents of our service area. Many owned animals also received vaccinations which will protect them from disease. Feral cat colony caretakers can vaccinate and sterilize their cats, through our Trap Neuter and Release program.

Supporting Our Vision Volunteers The Volunteer Department guarantees that our programs function effectively and with care and compassion. In 2010, over 400 volunteers gave more than 26,000 hours for the animals—the equivalent of 13 full time employees. Their generosity and love for animals continues to contribute vitally to the success of PHS.
The Pet Store and Boarding The Pet Store offers high quality food and supplies, toys and gift certificates to animal lovers, pet owners and new adopters. The Store also oversees scheduling and management of our boarding kennels. In 2010, The Pet Store and Boarding netted $155,096.75 which resulted in $52,336.75 for our animal care programs. These kennels hosted 1,229 dogs, netting $102,760.

Financial Development In 2010, dedicated supporters like you gave generously to help animals in the PHS service area. Your combined gifts totaled nearly $2,900,000 to provide the very best care for animals in need. Donors responded to direct mail appeals, made gifts through our website, donated vehicles and stock, and made tribute gifts to remember a special person or pet. In 2010, we received more than $186,000 from foundations and corporations, $98,000 from trusts and $564,000 in bequests. Although our donors gave through a variety of methods, their generosity all stemmed from the same source—their desire to help the animals. The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is truly fortunate to have such a committed and caring circle of donors.
Events Our annual fundraising events are a wonderful opportunity to have fun while helping the animals. The sold-out Doglegs, Birdies and Eagles golf benefit netted more than $121,000. 3,000 animal lovers and their four-legged friends joined forces for the Wiggle Waggle Walk at Brookside Park, netting over $245,000. Thanks to our dedicated supporters, both events were a smash success!
