Message

In 1903, the year the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA was founded, the animal population for the shelter was predominantly stray animals– animals used for pulling carts or wagons, such as horses and mules. Ten years later, PHS relocated to a building on Raymond Avenue, in the heart of industrial Pasadena, near the railroad tracks. Our animal populations had grown to include dogs, as well as working animals. Our programs even took care of abused women and orphans. More than 100 years later, at the same location, PHS may respond to an occasional call about a horse in need, but most of our programs target domestic pet animals and area wildlife. The pet overpopulation boom in the 1950s and 1960s influenced shelter programs, kennel design, and veterinary research. In 1997, PHS opened the first public spay/neuter clinics in the area as a preemptive method of controlling overpopulation. The years following the opening of this clinic have seen PHS develop programs and policies that reflect the changes in our community. In 2011, PHS transported small dogs to Virginia and Florida because they could be adopted more readily. Our knowledgeable behavior staff developed training and activity classes to teach pet owners ways to handle complicated issues while strengthening the human-animal bond. We are able to respond to the issues in our community in ways that were not even imagined when PHS began. Our history demonstrates one reason for our success. PHS is a pro-active animal welfare agency that is, and must, remain responsive to the animals and the community we serve. For example, in 2011, our staff cared for more than 250 cats that were found in a 600 square foot bungalow. We housed them in a weatherized tent in our parking lot, while we developed successful programs for their placement. Our staff, volunteers and supporters are part of our team of animal lovers, as they have been since 1903. Our future is tied to our past successes. There is more work ahead of us and PHS is ready for the challenge! For the animals,

Throughout 2011, the Pasadena Humane Society has experienced great challenges and remarkable accomplishments. The economy continues to influence the number of owner-surrendered animals to our care. In 2011, 610 cats and 567 dogs were brought to our shelter because their owners were no longer able to care for them. In December 2010, PHS rescued more than 250 cats, and so 2011 was filled with many months of staff dedication and daily care resulting in their adoption and placement. My husband and I adopted one of the kittens who had never lived outside a cage, had never been held and so distrusted human contact. As I write this I can’t get him (our sweet cat, Monty) off my lap! All in

PHS is blessed with a creative, knowledgeable staff. Our Adoption professionals are dedicated to finding the very best forever homes. Educational Outreach brings our message to the community through programs that reach all ages.

• Received 11,929 animals • Spayed or neutered 4,759 companion animals

2011

• Adopted 3,938 companion animals • Graduated 578 dogs from our public training and activity classes • Visited 127 sites with our Mobile Outreach Unit

The Behavior Department’s assessment and training program is crucial to enhance the adoptability of each animal. And we continue to reach out to our service areas through our Mobile Unit that spreads goodwill and information on our behalf. As I think of all these departments and programs, I can’t think of one that doesn’t benefit from the commitment of our fabulous volunteers. Our Volunteer Program is awesome–more than 400 volunteers and always with a training wait-list. Our volunteers are involved in and support every department, activity, event–PHS could never do what it does without our volunteers. Huge thanks for all you do! Our mission statement is “compassion and care for all animals.” My thanks go to PHS staff, volunteers, the board of directors and our supporters in the community for making it happen.

Making Connections

Adoptions We are happiest when we find forever homes for animals in our care. In 2011, 3,938 pets were adopted into loving homes or placed with one of our rescue partners. This is a decrease of 2.5% from 2010. Among the animals in new homes are 1,271 cats, 1,571 dogs, 53 rabbits, 9 hamsters, 13 turtles and 6 lizards. In 2010, PHS fostered more than 70 cats, dogs, rabbits and turtles and successfully found them new homes. Our placement rate is 93% for cats and 96.6% for dogs, demonstrating that PHS is a great place to find a pet.

Rescue Through our rescue partnerships, we have given 954 animals a third chance. This is an increase of 24% over the previous year. Specifically, our partnerships with animal welfare agencies back east allow us to transfer more than 137 chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes that were overlooked by the public. Through strengthening continuing local partnerships and developing new alliances in other states, PHS has been able to give more animals another chance. In addition to 585 dogs and 152 cats, PHS found placement for 65 rabbits, 13 turtles, 11 guinea pigs, 2 chinchillas, 11 hamsters and 1 goat! Other animals were sent to rehabilitation facilities.

Relation to PHS: Assistant Adoption Supervisor Best trick? Emma barks at everything. Raudi can do sit, stay, rollover and play dead. Little know fact about Emma & Raudi? They love to lick feet. Favorite food? Anything. They’re 4-legged vacuum cleaners.

Behavior The Behavior Department is responsible for assessing and enriching the animals that come into the shelter. Concurrently, the department offers programs and classes for the public that strengthen and enrich the human-animal bond that is so important in keeping pets in their homes.

Shelter Programs In Shelter School, an enrichment program for our shelter dogs, 148 dogs successfully graduated into our BLUE RIBBON program. These dogs showed the following generalized commands: sit, down, and stay. If you visit our modular cat ward, you’ll hear soft classical music or jazz playing as part of a new Feline Enrichment Program. Our Feline Behavior Specialist has developed a new enrichment and modifications program that will be implemented by our volunteers in early 2012. The Behavior & Training department evaluated a total of 2,250 dogs and 742 cats. Each potential pet was assigned to a modification program to enhance its adoptability through appropriate enrichment.

Programs for the Public In 2011, The Reader’s Choice Award for Favorite Training Classes went to our Training Program! There were 578 graduates in all of the classes, 456 in obedience classes and 122 for activity classes.

Educational Outreach 2011 was a year of growth for the Educational Outreach Department. To start with, there were 506 off campus presentations and 169 at the shelter. Currently, Barks & Books, our reading enrichment program, is in all 7 service cities, and provided 109 programs. Celebrating the human-animal bond, volunteers in the Pet Therapy Program made 275 visits, including more than 100 visits to the patients at Verdugo Hills Hospital, in Glendale. Our Animal Welfare Seminar for Teens, in its third year, has been responsible for school clubs and projects that have been created as a result of the important lessons taught during their week at PHS. In 2011, working with Animal Farm Foundation, PHS fulfilled a grant promoting responsible pit bull ownership by offering Canine Good Citizen testing. We raised $2,600 for our animal care programs. Schools from as far as the Pacific Palisades have made classroom visits to PHS and humane educators from other countries including Japan, Korea and Canada have visited to discover more about our programs.

Mobile Outreach In 2011, the Mobile Outreach Unit, our shelter on wheels, attended a total of 127 events including block parties, PHS events, pet care businesses, musical concerts and flea markets. A highlight was the four days at Expo Village at the Rose Bowl where people from all over the world stopped in to collect pet information, meet the dogs, and tour the Mobile Unit. Between 10,000-15,000 visitors passed through the Mobile Unit’s set-up areas in 2011. The Mobile Unit enjoys the enthusiastic support of nearly 70 specially trained volunteers. Each stop involves five to nine Mobile Volunteers and is usually five hours long. For the year 2011, it is estimated that Mobile Volunteers have collectively donated 5,500 hours of their time at Mobile events. In 2011, 650 dogs (and a handful of cats) went on a Mobile Unit trip. Most were adopted or sent to a rescue and many adoptions were initiated by contacts at a Mobile event. The public is very generous at Mobile events, contributing a total of $4,470.73 in the donation box. The addition of a laptop computer with remote access to the shelter’s database gives visitors up-to-the-minute information about any animal in which they may be interested.

In 2011, we expanded our social media presence to engage even more support. Twitter, foursquare and Google+ were added to our thriving social media repertoire, already consisting of Facebook and YouTube. These platforms played a key role in sharing important information about our services, adoptable animals, events, how-to videos for pet owners, and even emergency announcements during the powerful December windstorms. Twenty-three episodes of “The Dog House” television show for the City of Glendale were taped featuring 161 adoptable animals. In late 2011, GTV6 agreed to upload the remaining episodes onto YouTube, thus broadening the reach for adoptions. Adoptable pets were also featured in 468 online and print articles throughout our service area.

Building Awareness

Community Relations

PHS programs were featured in area newspaper articles and vans from all major networks were a frequent sight in front of our buildings. In November, we launched Steve’s Blog, an open forum for our president to discuss news and events, issues in animal welfare, and our successes and failures. Our website, www.pasadenahumane.org, continued to be an essential tool for people across our service area, the state and even the world as it grew 30 percent in visits with an astounding 1.2 million page views. Animals for adoption, behavior and training classes, and our public spay and neuter clinic were the most visited pages, proving that our website is a pivotal resource in helping our communities and the animals we serve.

Service to the Community This department participated in local reading programs, neighborhood meetings, and gave presentations to children attending summer camp. Home and property inspections are provided that inform residents about ways to co-exist with wildlife. We work closely with our cities on issues including living near animals such as coyotes, mountain lion and bear.

Other Involvement The Wildlife Specialist serves as a local representative to the L.A. basin Wildlife Roundtable meeting comprised of agents with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) wardens, other local law and animal control enforcement and prosecuting attorneys.

Spay/Neuter Because spay neuter surgery is one of our most effective ways to stop pet overpopulation, the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA not only sterilizes each cat, dog and rabbit that is adopted, but also operates a public, low-cost spay neuter clinic (SNiP) for residents of our service area. Many owned animals also received vaccinations which will protect them from disease. Feral cat colony caretakers can vaccinate and sterilize their cats, through our Trap Neuter and Release program.

Events Our annual and bi-annual fundraising events are a wonderful opportunity to have fun while helping the animals. In April, the sold-out Doglegs, Birdies and Eagles golf benefit netted more than $180,000. Then, in September, 3,000 animal lovers and their fourlegged friends joined forces for the Wiggle Waggle Walk at Brookside Park, netting more than $247,000. This year, we were fortunate to have amazing friends in the community who hosted two new fundraising events for the animals. The Pasadena Animal League, an auxiliary committee of the Pasadena Humane Society, presented the Fast and the Furriest. The elegant gala event, held at Annandale Golf Club, was a huge success and netted nearly $90,000. The San Marino Motor Classic held their first annual classic car show at Lacy Park in San Marino. Proceeds from the event—$100,000—were donated to the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. Thank you to all of our dedicated supporters who participated in these successful events!

Financial Development In 2011, dedicated supporters like you gave generously to help animals at the Pasadena Humane Society and in our community. Your gifts to our annual fund totaled $2,448,000 to provide the very best care for animals in need. An additional $2,061,500 was donated for special projects. Your support came in response to direct mail appeals and newsletters, gifts made through our website, donated vehicles and stock, and tribute gifts made to honor a special person or pet. In 2011, we received more than $257,000 from foundations and corporations, $92,000 from trusts and $1,814,000 in bequests. Although donors choose to give in the way that is most meaningful to them, all of our supporters share the same desire to save the lives of animals. We love our chihuahua, Carmen, who was a stray we adopted from the kind and wonderful folks at the Pasadena Humane Society. She is the most lovable, and cuddly creature. When we adopted her, she was a skinny 6 pound, frightened little girl but now she is 10 pounds, frisky, full of life and love. She brings such joy to our lives, we take her everywhere with us. —Gerry Puhara and Russel Ferrante phs adopters

As a PHS employee, I don’t just enjoy my job but I find it extremely fulfilling. To me, it’s more than a job or career is supposed be. Knowing I am serving and educating my community, and potentially bettering the animal population with an amazing group of colleagues is one of my most rewarding experiences. —Andrew Marsden Behavior & Training Supervisor

Bob Fidler & Gus

What does Gus give to you? He’s a great companion. When I ride my bike, he runs beside me. When I go fishing, he goes for a swim. He’s a great watchdog too and loves my 10 grandchildren. Gus’ favorite food? Nutro, cookies and biscuits. Separate beds? Yes, he has his own big bed.
