The Pasadena ISD Education Foundation Board of Directors is proud to present the 2019 Annual Report. Please take a brief moment to explore our past year of success and share in our dreams of providing continued support to the school children and educators of Pasadena ISD for years to come.

Since 2003, the Education Foundation has helped to bring dreams to life for educators and students alike while awarding $2,802,271.00 in the form of 763 mini-grants given across the district. In addition to the $222,552.42 in mini-grants awarded in 2019, the foundation distributed another $531,821.73 in designated donations and board approved funding for campus programs.

We have broadened our scope to include grant requests to corporate and private foundations. We are seeking new and untapped resources who will join our cause.

Though great strides have been made in helping to enhance the education of our students, for every bright idea submitted, there are usually two more that do not get funded because monies are not there. In the years ahead, the foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenge is to build on its initial success and expand financial support provided to the programs for Pasadena ISD students.

ABOUT THE EDUCATION FOUNDATION The Pasadena ISD Education Foundation is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization, which raises money to fund mini-grants of up to $5000 for district educatorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; classroom ideas or campus programs. These learning projects likely would not otherwise be funded by the regular school budget.

The foundation board of directors constantly strives to earn dollars through annual fundraising events and donations.

The mission of the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation is to enhance the quality of educational services to promote an exemplary educational system. The Foundation will collaborate with the community to reward innovative teaching, promote educational excellence, provide educational and leadership opportunities to students and to recognize the teachers and staff of the Pasadena Independent School District.

OUR TIMELINE Pasadena High School Alumnus and local attorney, John Eddie Williams, awards $100,000.00 to the Education Foundation being the largest donation from an individual to date.

The Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament under the leadership of Chairman Ben Meador and steering committee presents a $10,000 check to the Education Foundation as its designated beneficiary.

Meador Staffing is recognized as the first “Community Shining Star” award recipient at the Shining Stars Gala.

Gulf Coast Educators FCU donates t-shirts for every employee joining the Cornerstone Club. The popular t-shirts have more than doubled membership & contributions likewise. Under the leadership of Chairman Jack Bailey, the Foundation hosts its 1st Annual Texas Invitational Golf Classic at Timber Creek Golf Club. The tournament has become a significant fundraiser for the foundation & keeps growing.

MDL Enterprise Inc. agrees to donate computer devices to every senior honored at the Shining Stars Gala. They have continued to donate every year to date. The Athletics Hall of Fame is formed under leadership of Terry Brotherton & steering committee.

2018 The Education Foundation recognizes 4 founding board members who are still active on the board: Dr. Kirk Lewis, Denise Jennings, Herman Williams and Terry Brotherton. The Shining Stars Gala surpasses a half million dollars in proceeds over a 15 year span.

The first Pasadena ISD vs. Deer Park ISD Alumni Basketball Game is held during the McDonald’s Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament. It was a huge draw with former cheerleaders & drill team members entertaining the crowd.

ANNUAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING In February, the Board of Directors held its annual meeting where the new executive board was voted into office taking over for the former officers. New president, AJ Jabbary, presented past president, Steve Cote, with a gavel plaque to thank him for his year of dedicated service leading the education foundation.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS RETREAT In March, President AJ Jabbary hosted a planning session at The Tremont Hotel in Galveston for directors to map out strategies and fundraising events for the upcoming year. New directors were able to get to know the group and its policies while others enjoyed time with old friends.

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME In April, the Athletics Hall of Fame held their annual banquet at Phillips Field House in Pasadena, TX. They awarded two scholarships to student athletes in 2019. They also awarded three grants to athletic programs.

SHINING STARS ACADEMIC RECOGNITION GALA In May of 2019 the Education Foundation honored those seniors whose academics shine the brightest on their campus. Ten students with the highest grade point averages from each PISD high school were invited along with their parents and the teacher â&#x20AC;&#x153;who had the most impact on their education.â&#x20AC;? It was a star-studded event with foundation donors, board members and the community all coming together to recognize the success and accomplishments of this elite group of young people and educators. LyondellBasell Houston Refining sponsored the event providing decorations and volunteers under the direction of Gala Chairperson Denise Jennings. To add to the excitement, once again Dennis and Michele Lamm of MDL Enterprise, Inc. donated computer devices for each student. MDL Enterprise, Inc. was presented the 2019 Community Shining Star Award for their outstanding support of Pasadena ISD.

TEXAS INVITATIONAL GOLF CLASSIC In June, the 8th Annual Texas Invitational Golf Classic was held at Timber Creek Golf Club. The golf tournament was organized by Chairman Jack Bailey and committee to raise funds and awareness for the McDonald’s Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament. There was a full roster of teams, sponsors, and hole sign sponsors raising well over $51,000.00.

MARKETING AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS In August, the Education Foundation took part in two events to create awareness and information about the foundation. At the New Teacher Welcome, 10 lucky “first year” teachers were chosen in a random drawing for a $250 gift card to use for classroom supplies. Materials and other freebies were given to all booth visitors for this event as well as at the Business Expo held at the Pasadena Convention Center, which is hosted by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. Also in the fall, foundation board members volunteered to work a booth at each high school homecoming football game in an effort to gain more awareness with parents and students’ families.

FOUNDATION LIAISON MEETING The annual meeting of the foundation liaisons was held in September for campus representatives across the district. Those attending were given upcoming plans for the foundation. The liaisons help by getting the word out on their campus about the happenings of the foundation. They are instrumental in assisting with the Cornerstone Club Competition held in October.

FOUNDATION AWARENESS MONTH During the month of October, several events were held to heighten awareness of the PISD Education Foundation in the community and within the district. A competition was held between campuses to see who could recruit the most members in the Cornerstone Club. The club is made up of district employees who contribute to the foundation by payroll deduction and one time donors. Winning campuses were awarded cash prizes and individual incentives were given to members whose names were randomly drawn. This year, Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union donated t-shirts and hoodies to all Cornerstone Club members who met the annual donation requirement. Foundation directors donate gift cards that are awarded by random drawings to Club members.

MCDONALD’S TEXAS INVITATIONAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT The McDonald’s Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament is the primary fundraiser for the foundation. Run solely by volunteers and sponsored by local business, industry and corporations, it has become one of the most respected and sought after tournaments in the state. Set in 10 different venues, the 2019 tournament hosted 32 girls’ teams and 48 boys’ teams from Texas. The games were livestreamed on social media and the MTI website. Co-hosted with Deer Park ISD for the eighth year, the tournament gave back approximately $210,000 to both foundations collectively.

THE MCDONALD’S TEXAS INVITATIONAL CHECK PRESENTATION The McDonald’s Texas Invitational Check Presentation was made at the February 2020 Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees Meeting celebrating the success of the 2019 tournament. Steering Committee officials gave recognition to sponsors and volunteers with Marshall Kendrick winning the Barry Harris Award and Laurie Mellon and Colleen Terrell both being named Darla Haygood Volunteer of the Year. Chairman Kirk Lewis presented the giant check to the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation in the amount of $158,767.37. The Deer Park ISD Education Foundation received $50,813.24 from MTI.

PRIZE PARADE In December of 2019, the Education Foundation “Prize Parade” surprised campuses across the district with the awarding of mini-grants to educators. Joined by high school cheerleaders and a drumline, this festive assembly of foundation directors and donors brought oversized checks to be presented to the classroom teacher or educator(s) who submitted the grant application. Altogether, over $200,000 was awarded.

The resources will be utilized during small group instruction in the classroom and PIE intervention time. While working towards competing in the Pasadena VEX IQ Robotics tournament in February 2020 our students will learn about robotics and engineering. The use of reading comprehension games would provide my dyslexia students an opportunity to improve their overall comprehension skills through a fun and collaborative manner. Dyslexia learners thrive in the classroom when multi-sensory learning styles are used, which the comprehension games would provide for them. "

Libros para Lectores: Books for Readers Daily on-level reading is essential for students to advance through their Guided Reading Levels appropriately. Teachers need to have a variety of books, on the correct reading level, available both for reading lessons in class and for sending home. As the majority of our students are reading on levels A-E, teachers have identified a need for an increased number of these books. Having an adequate number of books is important for maintaining student interest and motivation. This project will enable us to improve our existing libraries and meet the learning needs of our students and the instructional need for teachers.

PT for PE (Portable technology for Physical Education) Our grant proposal seeks to acquire portable technology to provide support for our kindergarten through fourth grade students during Physical Education activities. We are seeking funds to purchase iPads for the Coaches to use at Get Fit Jog time, during station rotations in class, and at our community Fun Runs. The technology would provide us with access to tools to enhance stations and motivate students, no matter where the coaches are located in the gym. Including technology as a support in the gym will allow coaches more time to monitor students for safety, participation and overall positive interaction between students.

Robotics Reboot STEM Education has become one of the most successful and innovative approaches to get students involved with science and technology. Robotics is one of the most popular ways to get students excited about STEM. Robotics programs across the district have tripled in 2018-19 and we anticipate even more growth this year. We had over 75 students attend our robotics summer camps and hope to increase that number by 15%. We currently have six intermediate schools and seven middle schools participating in robotics and hope to spread the word to other campuses. Please help Reboot Robotics using STEM.

Pathway to Music Appreciation Music education can provide a multitude of benefits for schools: enhanced brain development, spatial/visual/temporal processing, improving memory and attention, physical coordination, personal discipline and teamwork. Currently our campus do not offer any music coursework, yet there is a huge student demand for extracurricular opportunities to pursue and/or continue music study. The CTHS Music Club has been created to serve this critical needs area by promoting and developing lifelong skills and music appreciation. This grant will provide funds to purchase musical instruments and supplies necessary for teaching guitar playing to all interested students and staff.

First Dobie Digital Art Lab Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s art students tell us their dream jobs are video game design, animation, and digital illustration. Preparing them for these ever-evolving creative fields must be the art educatorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal. Traditional art tools and techniques play important parts in equipping students, but digital art skills have become a critical necessity that is often overlooked. Our goal is to provide our art students with an opportunity to experience rich, immersive instruction in a fully functioning, up-to-date digital art-focused computer lab environment in which they can ready their imaginative minds for various forms of digital art and media careers.

Gymnastics is Flippin' Fun Gymnastics is like many other childhood activities, however, in that it includes learning to develop locomotor, balance skills, and spatial awareness. Beyond TURNER ELEMENTARY enhancing body awareness, gymnastics involves movement in a controlled manner that uses a variety of stimuli (apparatus, group work, music) to promote Jackie Caver, development of the body and mind. A physical education program featuring Adamaris Martinez gymnastics benefits children in many areas. It improves body management, control, aids in the development of locomotor, nonlocomotor, manipulative skills, promotes coordination, flexibility, agility, muscular strength, endurance, and bone strength. These abilities in turn relate to health and fitness and promote more physically active lifestyles.

Calming our way to Emotional Success Students at Young Elementary come to our school to escape their unstable, stressful and at times unsafe environment. At Young, we realize that in order for our school to be successful and for students to learn, we have to meet their basic needs. About 100 of our students live in temporary housing at the Bridge. These students come to school with emotional trauma from witnessing abuse or being abused. What we have discovered is that through relationships and direct emotional intervention we are able to decrease the level of outburst and the time they are out of class.
