Year End Reflections, New Year Intentions
E
N
T
We divided our board members into teams and began a push to fund raise, known as our Director’s Drive, and we immediately set to planning a large virtual fundraiser, The Back 4 the Future Telethon.
It feels like a lifetime ago, when the world was put on pause by a novel virus which had never been experienced by humans. However, I remember it vividly, as my first duties as President of the Education Foundation included canceling our annual retreat, Shining Stars Gala, Athletics Hall of Fame, and Golf Tournament. UIL took care of canceling our largest fundraiser, the McDonald’s Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament.
The Telethon was a huge success financially and enabled us to fund over $200,000 in mini-grants. Apart from this, during our eight-hour broadcast, we were able to showcase many of the amazing things that we do in PISD.
My peers on the Foundation are some of the most remarkable humans on the planet. We knew that the classrooms needed our continued support during the pandemic and we immediately went to work. Very quickly, we approved donating $200,000 to PISD for technology expenses, namely computers. This allowed our district to continue educating our students through virtual means. Like all other organizations, we quickly learned that being flexible was key! We exercised this new learned flexibility by adapting the events that were canceled. We turned our annual Shining Stars Gala into a drive through parade.
As I reflect on the past year, I choose to see all of the blessings. In the midst of it all, we launched a brand new website, earned the Silver Seal of Transparency from Guidestar, met many new donors, cultivated new relationships and strengthened old ones and most importantly, we learned that there is not much that we can’t do when we have PISD students and staff as our motivation. As I look toward the New Year, I know that we will continue to be intentional in the way we adapt and grow. I am proud and honored to continue to serve with such selfless, hardworking individuals. I pray that 2021 will be our best year yet!
Cheri Hutcherson, Board President

ANNUAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING In February, the Board of Directors held
its annual meeting where the new executive board was voted into office taking over for the former officers and the plaque gavel was presented to past president Cheri Hutcherson.
ANNUAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS RETREAT CANCELED
The Education Foundation Board of Directors retreat, which is annually hosted at The Tremont House in Galveston, was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. The event is an opportunity for directors to map out strategies and fundraising events for the upcoming school year. During the event, new directors have a chance to get to know the group and its policies while others enjoy time with old friends.
ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME POSTPONED
The 2020 Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame, one of the most highly anticipated alumni events of the year, was postponed due to the COVID pandemic and rescheduled for April 28, 2022. With so much uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, program organizers felt it would be in the best interests of everyone involved to push back the date one more year and host the event at a location that allows for social distancing. The event, which was previously held at Pasadena ISD’s Phillips Stadium since 2014, will take place in 2022 at the Pasadena Convention Center. Despite the decision to postpone the event this year, the Athletics Hall of Fame committee continued its annual scholarship award recognition program and presented four Pasadena ISD student athletes with scholarship checks totaling $2,500 to go toward their post-secondary education. See page 29 for Scholarship Winners.
SHINING STARS GALA TURNED PARADE
The Pasadena ISD Education Foundation turned its annual Shining Stars gala into an outdoor drive-thru parade to ensure social distancing during the COVID pandemic. The event, which annually honors the top 10 seniors from each high school and their distinguished educators, was held this year at Pasadena ISD’s Veterans Memorial Stadium. Seniors and distinguished educators drove around the stadium as members of the PISD Education Foundation, Pasadena ISD Board Members, district and campus administrators, event sponsors and city leaders including Mayor Jeff Wagner cheered along the path for the honorees. To maintain social distancing practices, each Shining Star and their distinguished educator rode in separate vehicles with their family and received gifts along the way. Students received multiple items including a personalized yard sign and a laptop for them to take with them to college. Teachers received trophies and gift bags. E

GOLF TOURNAMENT CANCELED
The Education Foundation’s annual Texas Invitational Golf Classic, where donors throughout the community gather for a day of golf, relaxation and fundraising, was canceled this year due to COVID.
MARKETING AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS The COVID pandemic may have prevented the foundation from participating in-person events, but it also created an opportunity for us to think outside the box and find new, innovative ways to accomplish our marketing and community relations efforts. Following CDC guidelines, the district’s New Teacher Welcome fair, along with the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, for instance, were canceled due to COVID. However, we redirected our focus to offer more virtual opportunities to connect with individuals and create awareness about the foundation. This year, the Education Foundation launched a new website to enhance our brand awareness and provide a user-friendly experience for all on-line observers. Staying on course with the new digital branding model, the foundation also implemented a new on-line donation platform that has revolutionized the on-line giving process for donors. In the summer of 2020, PISDEF directors voted to invest in MobileCause to allow nonprofits to start utilizing innovative virtual fundraising tools, like digital fundraising thermometers, text-to-donate and online crowdfunding. The investment includes a three-year subscription at a cost of about $10,000.
FOUNDATION MEETINGS WENT ONLINE Education Foundation meetings with directors and liaisons transitioned from the Pasadena ISD Board Room to a virtual environment to ensure the safety and well being of members during the COVID pandemic. The meetings provide updates for attendees about upcoming plans for the foundation. The liaisons use this information to spread awareness about future plans at the campus homes. The directors continued the monthly board meeting on-line to ensure the Foundation’s operations were not interrupted.

EDUCATION FOUNDATION AWARENESS MONTH
During the month of October, several events were held to heighten awareness of the PISD Education Foundation in the community and within the district. A competition was held between campuses to see who could recruit the most members for the Cornerstone Club. The club is made up of district employees who contribute to the foundation by payroll deduction and one time donors. Winning campuses were awarded cash prizes and individual incentives were given to members whose names were randomly drawn. This year, Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union donated t-shirts and hoodies to all Cornerstone Club members who met the annual donation requirement. Foundation directors donated gift cards that were awarded by random drawings to Club members. Due to COVID, the competition was extended through November.
MCDONALD’S TEXAS INVITATIONAL (canceled) Due to the COVID-19 concerns and UIL restrictions, the McDonald’s Texas Invitational was canceled. Any sponsorships for the Invitational went to the Back 4 the Future Virtual Telethon.

$327,000 RAISED
Virtual ‘Back 4 the Future’ Telethon Exceeds Goal through community-wide support During a time when we’ve seen a global health pandemic, school closings and canceled events, the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation decided to roll up its sleeves and give back. The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to cancel all of our fundraising events for 2020, which caused a major drop in donations. Because our mission has always been to support Pasadena ISD students and teachers, we couldn’t just sit back and do nothing. At the start of the pandemic, our board of directors voted unanimously to donate $200,000 to assist the district with COVID relief and to help pay for MiFi devices so virtual learners could have reliable internet service at home to do their assignments. Funding drastically depleted but the foundation was determined to give out more grants for teachers and scholarships for students in a big way. Adapting to challenges brought on by the COVID pandemic, the PISDEF decided to host a virtual fundraiser to continue its giving goals. On December 8, 2020, a total of approximately 12,800 local viewers tuned in to the eight-hour “Back for the Future” telethon, which was live-streamed through the foundation’s fundraising web page (operated through MobileCause), the Pasadena ISD website and Facebook page. The telethon held the foundation top its $250,000 goal with a total of over $327,000 in donations to support students and teachers in the district. The proceeds will go toward funding mini grants for Pasadena ISD teachers, scholarships for students and more. The telethon was divided into 20-minute segments featuring stories about: programs offered by the district, grant awards provided by the foundation, Pasadena ISD history, along with performances by various student groups, shots of the telethon’s call center and check presentations. The event included special guest appearances by various news personalities and social media influencers who served as the event’s show hosts, including Nate Griffin (Fox 26 News), Cynthia Cisneros (ABC 13 retiree), Jennifer Almaguer (actress and producer known for “Prison Break”), famous YouTubers Eduardo Verastegui and Princess Thi, and Jennifer Reyna, (former NBC news anchor).

Administrators and graduates of the district also joined in on the fun and served as co-hosts or reporters for portions of the event, including Jeremy Richardson, principal at Pasadena Memorial High School, who co-hosted the final hour of the show alongside Reyna; and reporters: • Jae Lee, principal of Burnett Elementary; • Roneka Lee, principal of Bondy Intermediate; • Maya Arredondo, recent graduate of Pasadena Memorial High School; • Jorly Thomas, principal of Fred Roberts Middle School; • Franklin Moses, principal of Dobie High School; • Lisa Haws, principal of Morales Elementary; • Steve Fleming, principal of CTHS; • and Amy McClellen, principal of Young Elementary. During the live broadcast, the event sponsors presented big checks to the Education Foundation, boosting the amount raised by hundreds of thousands. The scales tipped past the $250,000 mark when the Pasadena South Rotary presented a $54,000 check, followed by Chevron, which really knocked it out of the park with a $50,000 check. In addition to the check presentation, Tim Sutherland, general manager of the Chevron Pasadena refinery, also offered advice for students. “We specifically invest in STEM....so I think my advice is if you have the abilities to go into the math and sciences, go do it. Go into a physics degree, an engineering degree and then look us up,” Sutherland said. “The Pasadena ISD Education Foundation is grateful to all of our donors, sponsors, directors, steering committee members, and volunteers who made the Back 4 the Future Virtual Telethon a major success,” said Andrea Nguyen, PISD Education Foundation executive director. “We will be able to provide dozens of mini grants for teachers in the spring due to the generosity of our donors.” Nguyen said the response from the public has been received with “overwhelming” positivity. “People say they enjoyed how entertaining and fun the live show was and they got to learn more about Pasadena ISD and the mission of the Education Foundation. The show also allowed us to showcase the talents of Pasadena ISD students and staff. From students who operated the cameras to employees who formed the live band, to alumni and district leaders who manned the phones... it was great to see everyone come together for a great cause.” See pages 18 and 19 for event photos.
PRIZE PARADE DELAYED TO SPRING 2021 DUE TO COVID
The annual December Prize Parade was delayed to Spring 2021 due to the looming COVID-19 pandemic. Each year, groups of district administrators, community leaders and PISDEF members travel to different parts of the school district to surprise teachers in their classrooms with mini grants to fund their classroom programs. Joined by high school cheerleaders and a drumline, this festive assembly of foundation directors and donors involves presenting oversized checks to teachers or educator(s) who submited a grant application and won. Educators were able to apply online in early Spring of 2021 and the Prize Parade took place in May of 2021. See pages 30 and 31 for event photos. E

ED. FOUNDATION DONATES $200K FOR PISD DISTANCE LEARNING The Pasadena ISD Education Foundation donated $200,000 to remedy the impact of the COVID pandemic on the school district and meet the needs of students and staff. Funding was used for digital learning resources including additional laptop computers, MiFis for remote learners, and other educational items.
The foundation prioritized funding for digital learning based on recommendations from Pasadena ISD leaders. The recommendations came at a time when Pasadena ISD had begun its district-wide stay-at-home order in March 2020 and it was unclear when schools would start at-home learning and return to in-person learning. Pasadena ISD eventually started its at-home learning program and the need for digital learning resources began to grow. “Pasadena ISD worked quickly and diligently to transition from classroom to virtual learning so students could continue learning from home. We wanted to do our part to ensure that there was nothing standing in the way of their education,” said PISDEF Board President Cheri Hutcherson. The Education Foundation held a board meeting in April 2020, where they voted unanimously to postpone their annual December 2020 Prize Parade so they could allocate funding for COVID relief and students could continue at-home instruction until the end of the school year. “I am so thankful and proud to be able to work with a group of individuals who are ready and willing to work together to meet the needs of students and staff in the district, especially in times of crisis, thank you to all who made this effort possible,” Hutcherson said.

Four student athletes were selected as scholarship award recipients by the Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame selection committee in Spring 2020. Each recipient received checks totaling $2,500 to go toward their post-secondary education. Sponsored by the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation, the students were selected based on a rigorous application process that requires applicants to demonstrate good academic and disciplinary standing. Selection is also based on a student’s mastery of “skills and principles of the athletic programs in which the student has participated.

The scholarship award program was established as a way of recognizing outstanding student athletes who are involved at their campus and are pursuing their career path at a post-secondary institution, but are not necessarily intending on playing collegiate sports. Scholarship winners are annually recognized during the Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame banquet, but the event has been postponed, due to COVID, to April 28, 2022.
