Highlighting the Brightest Students of the District’s Seven High Schools and their Mentors
PAS AD EN A IS D ED U CAT I O N F O U ND AT I O N
Letter from the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation Board President On behalf of the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation’s Board of Directors, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate our 2021 Shining Star Recipients and their Distinguished Educators. You have truly made your school and this community proud because of your accomplishments! Last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the PISDEF had to cancel what would have been our 17th Annual Shining Stars Gala. The Shining Stars Planning Committee creatively changed the plans from a gala to the recognition parade held in the parking lot at Veterans’ Memorial Stadium. Because we are still in the middle of a world-wide pandemic and because the Shining Stars Parade was such a hit with our graduating seniors and their extraordinary educators last year, we are again celebrating with a parade! The graduating seniors from the Class of 2021 will long be remembered for their achievements in the midst of the storms! They experienced the devastation of Hurricane Ike as elementary students, the history making floods of Hurricane Harvey as they entered high school, and earlier this year the deep freeze of a record breaking winter storm. They have adapted to online instruction, face masks wherever they go and social distancing. They have seen more tragedy than past graduates. Through it all they have persevered to become our top performers! The Shining Stars parade allows us to celebrate these extraordinary students and teachers in a unique and memorable way, while keeping them safe in their vehicles as we cheer for each one. We are fortunate to have community partners who continue to make our Shining Stars Event a success. First, thank you to MDL Enterprise, Inc. for their continuing support and commitment to our district and generous contributions to our event and students. We are grateful for their donation of computers for each of our top 10 students! Second, thank you to all of our gala sponsors who provided additional financial support to make this year’s parade possible. Finally, I would like to thank the Shining Stars Planning Committee as well as the Pasadena ISD Communications and Printing Department for helping put together this memorable event. By the positive feedback we have received from students and educators, we feel you know how much we value each of you! I would also like to personally thank the Pasadena ISD Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. DeeAnn Powell, her cabinet members, Associate Superintendent Dr. Troy McCarley, Executive Director Andrea Nguyen, our PISDEF directors and other staff for the effort they put into planning and carrying out the parade. Since 2003, the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation has awarded 816 mini-grants totaling over $3,015,470. In 2020 we awarded the district a $200,000 grant to help ease the unexpected financial burden of having to quickly transition to distance learning during the pandemic. In December 2020 we held a Telethon fundraising event that raised over $300,000 to support our efforts to provide the Pasadena School District with the needed tools to enhance instruction and learning. On behalf of the PISDEF Board of Directors I would like to invite you, our community, to become involved with the foundation by donating, volunteering, or becoming a board member. We believe every child and educator deserves a champion and each of our directors takes that role seriously. We welcome you to join our efforts as we encourage students, support teachers, and improve our community through our schools! Congratulations to all of the 2021 Shining Stars and their Distinguished Educators! The Shining Stars are truly big and bright in Pasadena ISD! Sincerely, Judy Harrison President, Pasadena ISD Education Foundation

In his class I not only learned the procedures and programs used by engineers, I also learned the fundamentals of how to think like one. Mr. Lococo left us with a lot of creative freedom in his assignments, allowing me to develop my own problem solving and critical thinking skills. Most importantly, Mr. Lococo taught me how to manufacture my designs, giving me the power to take an idea and create a physical prototype with it.

My future plans after high school is to attend the University of Texas at Austin and pursue a business finance degree. I’ve always loved doing business related activities. I took interest in money and financing myself in the future as I took on side hustles such as flipping items on eBay in my local area. I’m hoping to elevate my business skills, knowledge, my own personal network, and later on, build more sources of income with my father who’s already doing real estate. Secondly, one of my biggest future plans is to continue my small online e-commerce business while attending college. Ms. Daniels is a teacher I liked right away since the very first day of school. I love the energy she gives to her students, you could tell she’s passionate about her job. Ms. Daniels taught me how to be organized and prepare myself for college. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for her. Ms. Daniels was always friendly and easy to talk to. I was fortunate to have her as my AVID and homeroom teacher, Ms. Daniels will always hold a special place in my heart.

Ms. Crystal Fullerton Distinguished Educator Sam Rayburn High School Algebra II | 10th Grade Ms. Fullerton always pushed me to be the best I could be everyday during class. She always gave pep talks on reality and structured her class and assignments to prepare us for college. She did a great job in doing so. She never sugar coated the difficulties I would face in college and that helped me realize that I needed to try harder in my courses. She would give daily pep talks in her class and it would always inspire me to set higher goals and achieve more. She still tried her hardest everyday even when she was exhausted to find new ways to teach algebra to make sure we understood the material. She always put her students first and was so kind to everyone in her classes. She never gave up on any students and did what she could to inspire us and push us all each and every day. She was my favorite teacher. I remember one day during class her giving me advice on how to keep on pushing in life even when the people around you do not support you. She taught me that not everyone will agree with your decisions, but you must do what makes you happy and that it is okay to make some mistakes along the way.

Ms. Brownlee is an amazing teacher who truly cares about her students, not only in school but also afterschool. Subjects like reading and writing were challenging for me, but having her as my teacher helped me improve greatly. I have applied many of her lessons throughout my education. There was never a dull moment in her classroom and all her students looked forward to going to her class including myself; she always knew how to engage her students. I never felt pressured to know or have the correct answer, regardless of the answer she made me feel comfortable in my attempts.
