on Hilton Head Store Owner Andrea Bragg Andrea@ForsytheJewelers.biz
Celebrating 37 years in 2018, Forsythe Jewelers continues to bring the world’s best designer jewelry and gifts to Hilton Head. Carrying the most popular designer brands, this family-owned business provides an unhurried, small-town shopping experience to every customer who enters the store. Over the past three decades, the store has established itself as an island landmark and its name is synonymous with shopping on Hilton Head. In fact, the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce recently named Forsythe as its “Small Business of the Year.” Storeowner Andrea Bragg keeps Forsythe on-trend by traveling the world to meet personally with designers and see firsthand where and how the items she chooses for the showcases are made. As a member of The American Gem Society, Forsythe takes pride in being part of a small percentage of jewelry stores in the world dedicated to high standards of professional ethics and education. For many locals, Forsythe is their “neighborhood” jewelry store where they are warmly greeted by name. For first-time visitors, the shop is the perfect backdrop for choosing a gift to remember their Hilton Head vacation. For returning visitors, shopping at Forsythe is as much a part of their vacation as an evening bike ride or walk on the beach…it’s an event they’ve been anticipating since their last trip to the island. Forsythe allows customers to slow down and shop at a pace that only a vacation can provide…no rushing or compromising; they’re now on “island” time.

A Dream Come True
Forsythe Jewelers owner Andrea Bragg routinely travels the country to bring the “big city look” back to Hilton Head
by Kitty Bartell

**This article first ran in the November 2017 issue of
reams do come true. After all, three times a year, Andrea Bragg jets off to New York and Las Vegas to shop (you are invited to pause to let that sink in, if only to contemplate the possibilities). Now, if the story stopped there, life would be as carefree as cocktails on a breezy veranda overlooking the Calibogue Sound for the owner of Hilton Head Island’s Forsythe Jewelers. In reality, Bragg flies to the big cities on buying trips for her iconic, fine jewelry shop, taking along one of her retail team members, her marketing alter ego, Katelin Chapman, and a heavy binder filled with strategic plans, charts, and reports, to help the team prepare for the next season in jewelry. “Buying in the jewelry business used to be very different,” Bragg said. “Traveling salesmen came to your store with a rolling suitcase and their rolls of jewelry. The sales person would write up the order, and off they went. Times have changed.” For Forsythe Jewelers, today’s approach is three-pronged: New York twice a year, and a June international show in Las Vegas. Bragg, Chapman, and sales associate Barb Panciera returned from this year’s September buying excursion, having worked very hard, seeking out just the right

lines and pieces to fill the seafoamlined cases of their shop next spring. Not allowing any grass to grow under idle feet, the team flew into New York on a Friday. “We scheduled our flight so we could go straight to our David Yurman appointment,” Bragg said. “We checked in at our hotel, dropped our bags off, put our cute shoes on, and ran over to David Yurman’s office. Then we met with John Hardy and Lagos that Monday.” The preparation imbued in these buying trips is a big part of why Forsythe Jewelers is celebrating 37 years of successfully serving locals and visitors from their sparkling, Sea Pines Center shop. “I have an admin team that puts together reports for me that show what my sweet spot is for each designer— what percentage of sales are in a certain price range; do we sell more bracelets, necklaces, earrings?” Bragg said. After all the data has been studied and absorbed, it is the long-standing commitment to her customers, that drives the final buying decisions. “Andrea has to be thoughtful about each piece” Chapman said. “She is trying to represent all the different facets that make up a Forsythe woman. She is very thoughtful and precise. A lot of brain power goes into the process.” “I always have to think of at least one person I can sell that piece to before I buy it,” Bragg said. With 52 percent of her customers coming
from outside the Lowcountry, a significant component of her effective approach is keeping on-trend. “A lot of our locals travel,” Bragg said. “A lot of our locals have homes somewhere else. They travel abroad, they travel across the states, and they want to be up-to-date. We need to know what’s hot, what’s the Pantone color of the year, what everybody’s showing, what everybody’s wearing.” As much as these trips are very much about business and numbers and inventory, it’s The Forsythe team meeting at the New York offices of LAGOS not entirely without amusing diversions. “We do occasionally take in a show. We try to take advantage of seeing the city.” And then back to business of course. “I like to check out what the big stores have—what Saks is carrying, what Neiman Marcus is carrying. I like to go to Tiffany to see what they are showing and how it’s merchandised. I like to see their sales techniques, how we are greeted, how we are Andrea meeting with Andrea and Barb making buying decisions Marco Bicego at his during their appointment at John Hardy taken care of. STE VEN L AGOS SHARES HIS TRAVEL INSPIRATION
H A S T R A V E L A L W AY S B E E N A N I M P O R T A N T PA R T O F YO U R L I F E ? In 1975, when I was 18 years old, I went on a solo cross-countr y trip that has really had a lasting effect on my life. It was a completely freeing experience t h a t a l l o w e d m e to e x p l o r e o u r beautiful country and appreciate the inspiration that was around every corner. That trip was the start of my lifelong passion for travel and is an important part in my design process to this day.
WHAT IS YOUR SOURCE OF INSPIRATION? Travel allows me to clear my head and create space for new ideas. When I arrive in a new place I feel refreshed and ready to explore. I never know where inspiration will come from, it could be the people, the sights, the culture. It’s something different ever y time. More than 40 years after that cross-country trip, I still feel inspired when I travel and continue to seek out one-of-a-kind gemstones and materials that make our collections feel unique.

Snow…on Hilton Head? In January 2018 the Lowcountry transformed into the “Snowcountry” “Good weather” is often high on the list of why Hilton Head is a top choice to visit or call home. Of course, the term “good weather” is subjective. However, the roughly 4.5 inches of snow which accumulated on our little island in early January 2018 seemed by many to land outside of the “good” category and into the “I left the north so I wouldn’t have to deal with this anymore” category. Stores, restaurants, schools, businesses, including Forsythe Jewelers, were closed for a few days as road conditions slowly improved. The snowstorm, which was the first of its magnitude since 1989, wasn’t considered “bad weather” by all. In fact, many felt that it offered a few days to slow down, catch up, and experience the scenery of Hilton Head as they never had before; blanketed in white. For others it gave a chance to give “golf cart sledding” a try…to each its own! One thing that everyone can agree on is that Hilton Head is a very special place, regardless of the weather. Three cheers to that! Please enjoy these snapshots which represent how the Forsythe team spent our “Snowcountry” days. 17
Jaipur This collection is reminiscent of a tropical Indian sunset and a celebration of the Jaipur region’s rich traditions of precious stone carving, featuring an exclusive Marco Bicego faceted cut. The color and composition of each stone within this collection has been hand selected, the detail in every piece of jewelry is the result of meticulous work that includes hand engraving and texturing the gold to give greater depth. The answer is a marriage of old-style craftsmanship, contemporary elegance and jewelry that is available as it is precious.
