According to the 1890 Census, a mere 726 people inhabited the 7,200 square miles between Lake Okeechobee to the Florida Keys. Today, an estimated 1.4 million people reside in Palm Beach County alone. What happened in the intervening 125-plus years has a lot to do with Henry Flagler, a hotelier and oil magnate who was quick to recognize the potential in The Palm Beaches’ ideal climate and natural splendor. He received a charter from the state to build a railway from North Florida’s Indian River to Miami, which reached West Palm Beach by 1894. This opened a delivery system for agriculture and tourism, which Flagler doubly aided by constructing Palm Beach’s first luxury hotel, the massive Royal Poinciana, also in 1894. Boasting 1,100 rooms, it was
then the largest wooden structure in the world. Flagler’s contributions also included the Palm Beach Inn, which later became The Breakers, and Whitehall, a 75-room, 100,000-square-foot mansion preserved today as the Flagler Museum. History buffs visiting The Palm Beaches can discover these facts and much more at the Johnson History Museum, a free attraction in West Palm Beach. The museum, on the ground floor of the city’s restored 1916 Courthouse, contains everything from pre-Columbian artifacts to the notorious “butterfly ballot” that brought all eyes to Palm Beach County during the 2000 presidential election. If you’re lucky, you can tour the museum with one of its many docents. We did just that, and came away with the following insights. ThePalmBeaches.com/vg
04 DPB 18_History.indd 11

2/14/18 9:11 AM
1 1. Taking a Shine: The oldest building in The Palm Beaches, the 1860-vintage Jupiter Lighthouse, predated cities and towns: The region’s first residents were the lighthouse keeper and assistant lighthouse keeper. George Mead, a union general who fought at Gettysburg, submitted the plans for the Jupiter Lighthouse, built brick by brick thanks to appropriated Congressional funds. The Lighthouse still operates as one of The Palm Beaches’ signature attractions. 2. Coco for Coconuts: The coconut palms that define the tropical ambience of The Palm Beaches are not native to the region. They are the result of a shipwreck, when a Spanish barque called The Providencia, carrying 20,000 coconuts’ worth of cargo, ran aground on Palm Beach in 1878. These coconuts were planted by the pioneers in groves to become a cash crop. When it came time to give the town its name, local officials combined “Palm” and “Beach”— two things the area had in abundance. 3. Play Ball! Just as Henry Flagler’s railroad and buildings expanded tourism in The Palm Beaches, he’s also responsible for creating its baseball infrastructure. To entertain his hotel guests, he brought players from the Negro teams across the U.S. to Palm Beach for recreational games. When they weren’t
5 12
2 hitting the diamond, the players worked as busboys, waiters and porters at Flagler’s hotels. The Palm Beaches have since become an ideal climate for Spring Training, with four Major League teams hosting spring seasons at Jupiter’s Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium and West Palm Beach’s Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. 4. Special Delivery: Before the invention of the automobile, so-called “barefoot mailmen” delivered correspondence from Miami to The Palm Beaches—an 80-mile route across sandy beaches. One barefoot mailman famously disappeared, and another was known to walk the beaches naked on account of the heat. 5. Flight Plan: The Wright Brothers considered carrying out their early flight experiments in The Palm Beaches, thanks to the region’s relatively flat terrain. Morrison Field, which opened in 1936, later served as a supply depot in World War II, and eventually became the awardwinning Palm Beach International Airport. 6. Medicine Man: Munyon Island, which is located in the Lake Worth Lagoon Estuary in North Palm Beach, owes its name to Dr. James Munyon, who constructed a health spa on the island in 1903. Munyon served his guests “Dr. Munyon’s Paw-Paw Elixir,”
6 ThePalmBeaches.com/vg
04 DPB 18_History.indd 12
2/14/18 9:11 AM
3 a patent medicine consisting of fermented papaya juice, that he claimed cured all diseases. Needless to say, the Paw-Paw has not entered the medical literature, but Munyon Island continues to draw visitors as part of John D. MacArthur Beach State Park. 7. Quirky Architecture: New York architect Addison Mizner moved to Palm Beach in 1918 and developed the area’s iconic Mediterranean-Revival style—a goulash of influences that one scholar described as “Spanish-MoorishRomanesque-Gothic-Renaissance-Bull Market-Damn the Expense.” His major accomplishments, still standing, include the Everglades Club in Palm Beach and what would become the Boca Raton Resort & Club. He was as known for his eccentric menagerie as his work: He owned several colorful macaws and three monkeys—one of whom, Johnnie Brown, has his own grave on Palm Beach. 8. What’s in a Name? In the early 1920s, Kelsey City, named after Harry Kelsey, became the first planned community in the state of Florida. Kelsey’s grand plans for the town were never completed, and today, the region is known as Lake Park, a hip suburb. But Kelsey’s legacy lives on in the stanchion introducing visitors to the town, and in the Kelsey Theater, a
8
4 performing arts venue that brings movies and touring bands to The Palm Beaches. 9. Third Time’s a Charm: The resilient Breakers hotel, one of the jewels of The Palm Beaches, has burned down twice in its storied history. The second time was thanks to a newfangled invention brought by the wife of the mayor of Chicago: a curling iron, which short-circuited and set the property ablaze. The hotel was then reconstructed, wisely, from concrete and stone. 10. Have a C.O.W.: The Village of Wellington owes its name to C. Oliver Wellington, a Massachusetts accountant and aviator who acquired 18,000 acres of swampland in western Palm Beach County in the 1950s. He initially named the property the Flying C.O.W. Ranch, which references his initials and his aviation hobby. Today, Wellington is more known for horses than cows, becoming the nation’s leading destination for equestrian sports. The Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum is maintained by the Historical Society of Palm Beach County and is located at 300 N. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach. 1885 Before there were cars, “barefoot mailmen” walked the beaches from Palm Beach to Miami to deliver correspondence.
1902 Flagler, who established his fortune as an oil baron, also built a 75-room winter palace on Palm Beach. Today, this gilded treasure is preserved as the Flagler Museum.
1894 The Breakers owes its name to a eureka moment when developer Henry Flagler watched the waves “break” over the Atlantic Ocean.
1860
In its early days, the elegant Palm Beach restaurant Ta-Boo welcomed the likes of John F. Kennedy and Frank Sinatra; today, you might score a table next to island residents James Patterson or Rod Stewart.
1926 The Boca Raton Resort & Club opened its doors as The Cloister Inn—a 100-room hotel, modeled after a Spanish castle, designed by eccentric architect Addison Mizner. More than 90 years later, its rooms number more than 1,000.
The Jupiter Lighthouse is Palm Beach County’s oldest visitor attraction.

1982 West Palm Beach’s SunFest, which celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2017, originally showcased only local music. Now, the largest waterfront music festival in the state welcomes huge national acts over 5 jam-packed days.
2017 The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, Palm Beach County’s newest attraction, brings MLB Spring Training action—and much more—to its 6,500-seat stadium in West Palm Beach.
1979 County resident Burt Reynolds built a star-studded dinner theater that stands today as the award-winning Maltz Jupiter Theatre.
1961 John F. Kennedy’s bunker on Peanut Island is preserved in the Palm Beach Maritime Museum. Kravis Center
1992 The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts’ grand opening included performances by Ella Fitzgerald, Lily Tomlin and Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre. Twenty-five years later, it still brings world-renowned talent to its fourvenue campus.

These days, it hovers grandly over the northern tip of The Palm Beaches, where beachfront resorts share a ZIP code with casual and fine dining and an array of year-round activities— many of which, like July’s Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival, are presented free of charge. Sports fans flock to the city’s Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium to watch the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals play Spring Training, and additional entertainment offerings include the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, a regional playhouse regularly recognized with awards for theatrical excellence; and the Lighthouse ArtCenter, where visitors can view exhibitions and purchase local art. Just over a scenic bridge from West Palm Beach is its island neighbor, Palm Beach, where multimilliondollar mansions share palm-lined real estate with cutting-edge restaurants, luxurious boutiques, historic museums and sculptural treasures. The Lake Trail, which can be walked or biked, is an ideal way to sample it all. Lake Worth, one of The Palm Beaches’ most historic towns, is also one of its funkiest, where public art dots the downtown, mom-and-pop shops hawk unusual wares, and where more than 1,000 early 20thcentury cottages can be viewed. Leave time to visit the horseplay in Wellington, which in season (January to April) is an international showcase of equestrian and polo competition, and all year round hosts national retailers at its Mediterranean-style shopping mall.

Clematis Street, West Palm Beach
West Palm Beach is the closest big city to Palm Beach International Airport (PBI). Within minutes of landing, visitors can attend a conference at the Palm Beach County Convention Center; relax at the colorful outdoor cafes, fine restaurants and trendy nightspots of CityPlace; shop the boutiques and galleries of the funky Northwood Village; or find a priceless rarity in the more than 40 collectibles shops on Antique Row. Much of West Palm Beach’s vibrancy is clustered in the Downtown Convention, Arts & Entertainment District, whose more than 20 art and history museums, galleries, libraries and theaters include the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, a hub for touring celebrities and Broadway shows; and the Norton Museum, a destination for lovers of classic and contemporary art. Still more options await in downtown West Palm Beach and its bustling main drag, Clematis Street, which features teeming outdoor festivals. Be sure to visit during the holiday season to admire Sandi, a 35-foot tree sculpted from 600 tons of beach sand. This, plus the city’s full slate of holiday activities, helped West Palm Beach make Coastal Living’s list of the “10 Best American Beach Towns for Christmas.”

This 16-mile barrier island is home to many of the most extravagant mansions in the state—Gilded Age holdovers surrounded by tropical foliage and world-class resorts with international cachet. These include The Breakers, the legendary 538-room Italian Renaissance-style hotel built by business tycoon Henry Flagler. Speaking of Henry, one of the island’s most popular destinations is Whitehall, the 55-room mansion he built for his wife in 1902, preserved today as the Flagler Museum. Worth Avenue, Palm Beach’s street of dreams, entices visitors with its designer boutiques and posh restaurants.

The Palm Beaches - South More than 90 years ago, a quirky architect named Addison Mizner decided to design a luxury resort in the middle of nowhere—specifically the subtropical swampland of Boca Raton. His dreamy resort still stands as a city landmark; only now a thriving metropolis of culture, entertainment, dining, shopping and hospitality has blossomed around it, much of it bearing Mizner’s iconic Mediterranean-Revival architecture. A statue of Mizner greets visitors to Royal Palm Place, an elegant, zigzagging plaza of boutique shops, galleries, restaurants and theaters. Its retail and nightlife neighbor, Mizner Park, is an equally impressive place to shop, dine and meander. Mizner Park is home to a world-class art museum, and in March, it hosts an internationally renowned arts festival bringing top-shelf names in music, literature and world events to Boca Raton. The city also hosts a lavish indoor shopping mall, turtle walks on the beach, and the highest concentration of golf courses in The Palm Beaches. On the Glades road corridor further west, one will find additional shopping, accommodations and dining venues.

Awarded the honor of No. 1 Best Small Town in America by Rand-McNally, Delray Beach’s remarkable concentration of chef-driven restaurants, fashion-forward retailers and beachfront has made it one of the liveliest mainstreets of any city in Florida. More fun awaits west of the downtown region, including a cultivated wetland, a picturesque Japanese Zen garden and a sprawling marketplace of restaurants, shops, and a movie theater/bowling alley hybrid. The Palm Beaches’ secondlargest city is a hotbed for beach activities, culture, dining, shopping and corporate headquarters. It’s one of the state’s most architecturally distinct regions, thanks to the pink-hued Mediterranean-Revival vision of legendary architect Addison Mizner. His influence looms large over the Boca Raton Resort & Club, the sprawling Waldorf Astoria hotel that is its own city within a city. A short drive away is downtown Boca, with its lively festivals in Sanborn Square; Royal Palm Place, with its European-style assemblage of restaurants, shops and theaters; and Mizner Park, a shopper’s enclave that also houses the Boca Raton Museum of Art, an iPic cinema and the Mizner Park Amphitheater, with its free and ticketed concerts.

The Palm Beaches - Glades Turn off the phone and let the croaks of gators and the flapping wings of spoonbills be the soundtrack to your exploration of Lake Okeechobee—aka “Lake O”—the second-largest freshwater lake in the lower 48 states. The lake, which is a gateway to the cherished Florida Everglades, measures 730 square miles with an average depth of only 10 feet, making it a favorite escape for kayakers and canoeists, wildlife photographers and birdwatchers. The bass fishing here is considered one of the ultimate fishing experiences in Florida. Cyclists are equally attracted to the lake-hugging Scenic Trail, with its one-of-akind views and 110-mile route. If saddles are more your style, you can even travel the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail on horseback.

Lake Okeechobee/ The Glades
You can commune with nature in your choice of lodging, as well: The towns of Pahokee, Belle Glade and South Bay, which comprise the Glades region, offer campgrounds on the lake. This territory is known for its remarkably resilient agriculture and nutrient-rich soil; learn more about it at Belle Glade’s history museum. Hence the city’s motto and saying, “Her soil is her fortune.”
The Glades, a western cluster of the towns of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay, represents the gateway to the Florida Everglades and Lake Okeechobee, a favorite for boating, kayaking, canoeing, bass fishing, airboat rides and water skiing. The historic 1,400-mile Florida Trail circles around Lake Okeechobee, providing runners with a picturesque workout surrounded by native flora and fauna. The region also represents the winter breadbasket of the United States, leading the nation in the production of sugarcane and sweet corn. Places To Explore Get back to nature with these wild (but safe) options.
INTO THE EVERGLADES Pack your adventure gear, because you’re exploring the “River of Grass.” There’s nothing in the world like the Florida Everglades – and The Palm Beaches are the gateway to this mysterious, beautiful ecological wonderland. Twenty minutes west of the beaches you will find the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in Boynton Beach for marshes, wet prairies, sawgrass, tree islands, sloughs, and wildlife viewing. Grassy Waters Preserve, minutes from downtown West Palm Beach, offers guided canoeing and access to the famed Apoxee Wilderness Trail. Yes, there are alligators here – ready your camera, but remain at a safe distance.
LAKE O The Glades region is bordered by Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades. Okeechobee is the Seminole word for “Big Water.” The locals make it easy and call it “Lake O.” This lake is America’s Bass Fishing Capital and the calm waters and 74
marsh flats make for a great day of pontoon boat fishing. From the shoreline, ample bird-watching or alligator viewing can keep you mesmerized. The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) invites hikers, bikers and horseback riders.
THE LAKE WORTH LAGOON If you traverse bridges in West Palm Beach, Lake Worth or North Palm Beach, look over the rail: the beautiful water is Lake Worth Lagoon. It’s a urban estuary, running 20 miles in length highlighted by the Snook Island Natural Area, small islands, parks, walkways, bike paths, marinas, historic mansions, and city downtowns.
RIVER RUN Making your way down the Loxahatchee River is like being a heroic explorer encountering interior Florida for the first time. This was the first river in Florida to earn a federal designation as Wild and Scenic. Go from headwaters to ocean in a canoe or kayak. One of the best places to start is Riverbend Park in Jupiter.

Draft picks For craft beer enthusiasts, The Palm Beaches offer more than a flavor of the week. Our fine purveyors of hops ‘n’ suds comprise a specialty beer mecca, from fruity lagers to ciders to bold IPAs to dessert-flavored stouts. Some are “funky,” and others may be “twisted.” But all of The Palm Beaches’ craft brewers develop their signature malts with care, precision and plenty of inspiration.
