Hypnosis for Health and Wellness Hypnosis has become a mainstream technique for smoking cessation and weight loss. Clear evidence of the emergence of hypnosis as a serious practice is the Wall Street Journal article published on April 9, 2012. This article touts usefulness of hypnosis for these and a variety of other things, including medical hypnosis for pain reduction, relieving anxiety and relaxing patients before surgery. Despite the ridicule hypnosis has endured because of its portrayal in movies, hardworking hypnotists have made headway with the general public by helping real people with real issues get lasting results in just a few visits. It also helps that some of the most respected medical institutions, like Harvard Medical School, Stanford University, and many others are taking a serious look at how hypnosis improves healing, reduces the amount of anesthesia needed, is helpful in the treatment of migraines, is a viable treatment for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and is even an

excellent intervention for drug addictions. Many medical professionals, from MDs to psychologists, nurses, and dentists, are even adding hypnosis to their practices, or often choose to refer out to practicing hypnotists, like Laura Boynton King and her daughter, Larissa King, of Summit Hypnosis and Wellness. Laura Boynton King, CHt, NLP, founder of Summit Hypnosis and Wellness, is the lead hypnotist at the Sari Asher Center for Integrative Cancer Care. She is certified in pain management, hypno-oncology, and many other medical hypnosis techniques and works with patients and families in all stages of cancer care. Mrs. King also has offices in the Lake Worth/Wellington area and Palm Beach Gardens, where she, her daughter and other certified hypnotists on staff see clients five days a week. In her latest book about hypnosis due out in October, 2012, Hypnosis for Health and Wellness, Mrs. King connects the dots between the medical community and hypnosis.

a dynamic health and medical cluster Medical support organizations Now, this robust industry cluster will be entering a new stage with the planned development of the Wellington Medical Arts District. Located at Forest Hill Boulevard and State Road 7, the district will be an integrated 210-acre campus with more than 2 million square feet for hospital, education, office, medical-related, and support retail activities. The district will draw up the economic engine of the Wellington Medical Regional Medical Center – the region’s largest employer – as well as nearby Palms West Hospital, to attract new medically related companies and

providers, potentially creating 5,000 to 6,000 jobs new jobs in the western communities. Wellington Regional Medical Center is already investing in the future of the region with the recent opening of the Alan B. Miller Pavilion, a 103,000-square-foot three-story addition to that expands the hospital into a 233-bed medical complex. For current healthcare and medical service providers – as well as prospective newcomers – the Wellington Medical Arts District will provide a solid foundation for longterm, sustainable economic development throughout the western communities.

How to Choose a Doctor:Layout 1

11/12/12

2:59 PM

Page 19

how to choose a doctor choosing

a new physician can be a difficult task, especially if you have moved and are living in a new community. Your insurance plan may restrict your choices to a group of plan-approved physicians. Most practicing physicians in the U.S. both primary care physicians (a doctor you would see for routine ailments such as a cold, the flu, and regular checkups) and specialists (doctors who focus on one area whom you would see) are board certified. Primary care providers may be board certified in different areas such as, Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.

The following questions can help you to define further what is most important for you: 1. Where is the practice located? Will it be easy for you to get there? Is it accessible by public transportation? 2. Which hospital(s) does the doctor use? Are you comfortable with the possibility of being treated at one of these institutions should the need arise? 3. Where are routine x-rays and laboratory studies performed? Can these be done inoffice, or will you have to go to an outside laboratory? 4. How long must you wait for an appointment after you call? Can you be seen on the same day if you have an urgent need?

5. Is the office staff friendly and courteous? 6. If you call with a question about your care, does a doctor or nurse return your call promptly? 7. Who covers for the physician when he/she is away? If the doctor works in a group, are you comfortable with being seen by one of the practice partners? 8. Does the physician frequently refer patients to specialists or does he/she prefer to manage the majority of your care themselves? 9. Does the office process insurance claims, or must you pay up-front for services and file the claims yourself?

take control of your medical records your

medical records are yours, and you have the right to see them. If you are ready to take control of your medical records, here are some tips that can help you: Keep your own records: Make notes of your health care visits, and what was said. You can also make notes of your prescriptions. Keep your own records, and you will know what is happening. Get a full copy: Before you leave any appointment, ask for a copy. From blood tests to dental records, there is no reason why you cannot have a copy of your records. Be organized: Organize your records so that you know where they are. Have a system in place that allows you to find them quickly. Keep your records safe: Make sure your records are in a safe place. You want essential records safe from damage and from theft. Know your rights: You own the infor-

mation in the medical records — even though the health care professional owns the actual document. Realize that you have control over the information. Have mistakes corrected: By law, you can have misleading or incorrect information corrected. If there is a mistake in your medical records, you need to have it fixed. Be on the alert for identity fraud: If you discover that your identity has been stolen, make sure you check for unauthorized medical procedures in your name. Make sure records are updated: Try to make sure that copies of your records are updated with new information. Consider records for legibility: Charts can often be illegible. If something in your medical records appears sloppy or difficult to read, ask to have it clarified. Consider setting up an online profile: There are services like Google Health that can provide you with a way to manage your health records electronically.

5 goals to losing weight to

lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you eat. Wise food choices can help you eat fewer calories and daily physical activity helps you burn off some of the calories you consume. You lose weight more easily and you’re more likely to keep it off, too.

1

Keep portions smaller than your fist. It’s easy to overeat when you have too much food on your plate. Smaller portions help prevent overeating. For most foods, a reasonable portion is ½ to 1 cup. Even if your fist is larger than that, it is still a handy measuring tool that goes everywhere you go. Control your hunger with filling foods that are low in calories. Foods such as soup, salad, fruits and vegetables can help fill you up without adding a lot of calories. These foods will satisfy hunger and help you lose weight. Research shows that people feel less hungry when they eat a certain volume

2

of food. High-fiber foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can provide a feeling of fullness.

3 4

Keep track of what you eat. When you keep track of what you eat, you’re more likely to meet your food goals. Keeping a food log or diary helps people lose weight and keep it off. Make trade-offs to reduce how much fat and sugar you eat. Foods high in fat and sugar are usually high in calories, too. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite foods. Learn to make trade-offs instead. If you want to indulge in your favorite dessert, eat a lowercalorie meal.

5

Enjoy more physical activity. As you already know, regular physical activity is important for keeping your heart healthy. Increasing physical activity may help you lose weight and strengthen your heart at the same time.

has been said about the relationships between nail technicians and their clients. Like hairstylists, manicurists hear secrets, gossip, and confessions – and in this case, life-saving advice. Marion Pollock, a nail technician at The Spa at Hunter’s Run in Boynton Beach, knows how valuable these relationships can be. Through her friendship with Hunter’s Run resident Bonnie Howard, Marion received an important referral to the South Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® that connected her with the cancer treatment she needed. Pollock’s stage 1 cancer diagnosis in 2010 was a shock. Marion, a single mother of two, was only 32 years old and wasn’t insured. She needed medical treatment – fast. That’s where Bonnie Howard came in. A longtime volunteer with the Komen South Florida Affiliate, Bonnie was familiar with the options open to uninsured individuals. She had also lost friends to cancer and didn’t want to see it happen again. “Marion is a wonderful woman,” Bonnie said. “I heard from her as soon as she received her diagnosis. As a Hunter’s Run Race Team Captain and a former team liaison in Boynton Beach, I knew that Komen [South Florida Affiliate] could help Marion find the treatment she needed.” It was through the Affiliate that Marion received a grant for her lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation at the Bethesda Memorial Hospital Women’s Center. Two years

later, Marion has a clean bill of health. Marion says that now her motto is Don’t give up. Komen South Florida Affiliate volunteers like Bonnie can relate. They’ve worked tirelessly towards annual Race goals, year after year. Their core goal is to raise money to award local organizations grants that serve women and men who would otherwise have few options for breast health education, screening, and treatment – individuals just like Marion. “A lot of uninsured people with cancer don’t know that Komen can help them,” Marion reflected. “I try to spread the word as much as I can. I recently spoke at my church, St. Paul AME in Boynton Beach, and I referred one recently diagnosed woman to Komen.” If you know anyone who needs education or screening services in Palm Beach, Martin, or St. Lucie county, have them call the Komen South Florida Affiliate’s hotline at (561) 514-3020 today. To find out how to volunteer or donate, call the Affiliate or visit www.komensouthflorida.org.

DID YOU KNOW? 75% of net proceeds generated by the Komen South Florida Affiliate support breast cancer outreach, education, diagnostic, and treatment programs in Palm Beach, Martin, and St. Lucie counties. The remaining 25% of funds raised goes to Komen’s national research initiatives. GETWELL | 29

cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. It occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. Cancerous tumors may spread, invading and damaging nearby tissue. In some cases, skin cancers can spread to vital organs, becoming deadly.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually. Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.

what is skin cancer? Over the past 31 years, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. 13 million white non-Hispanics living in the US at the beginning of 2007 had at least one nonmelanoma skin cancer, typically diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Nearly 800,000 Americans are living with a history of melanoma and 13 million are living with a history of nonmelanoma skin cancer, typically diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer. An estimated 700,000 cases are diagnosed each year in the US, resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths. Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either skin cancer at least once. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

Treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers increased by nearly 77 percent between 1992 and 2006. Treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers increased by nearly 77 percent between 1992 and 2006. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer; an estimated 2.8 million are diagnosed annually in the US. BCCs are rarely fatal, but can be highly disfiguring if allowed to grow.6 An estimated 3,010 deaths from nonmelanoma skin cancers will occur in the US in 2012. Actinic keratosis is the most common precancer; it affects more than 58 million Americans. Approximately 65 percent of all squamous cell carcinomas and 36 percent of all basal cell carcinomas arise in lesions that previously were diagnosed as actinic keratoses.

Nerve Impingement Syndrome:Layout 1

Nerve Impingement Syndrome nerve

Impingement Syndrome (NIS), or a Subluxation, occurs when a misalignment of one or more of the joints in the spine places pressure on a nerve. Nerves communicate from the brain through the spinal cord and nervous system. Pressure on the nerves can cause interference with the transmitted signal. This can cause pain and/or discomfort, as well as other symptoms. In addition to pain, other symptoms of Nerve Impingement Syndrome Include: Headaches, Fatigue, Sleep Disturbances, Sinus and Allergy Issues, Mood Swings, Digestive Problems Are you among the thousands that are suffering needlessly because of a lack of understanding of your symptoms? If so, wouldn’t you like to relieve these symptoms and return to a happier, healthier lifestyle?

CAUSE… The misalignment of a joint is called Nerve Impingement Syndrome or a Subluxation. This can develop for a variety of reasons, including an accident trauma, poor posture or diet, lack of or incorrect exercise, a sports or repetitive motion injury, relationship or financial stress. It is the Subluxation that creates the Nerve Impingement Syndrome that prevents you from enjoying all of life’s pleasures. “Subluxations caused by Nerve Impinge32 | GETWELL

ment Syndromes can reduce nerve impulses by 60%.” Dr. Chung Ha Suh, University of Colorado.

NERVE IMPINGEMENT SYNDROME FACTS: 80% of all childbirths result in Nerve Impingement Syndrome. 40% of all children fall on their heads by age 1, according to OSHA; this can result in Nerve Impingement Syndrome. Between ages of 2 and 5 years old, children fall over 200 times; this can be a major cause of Nerve Impingement Syndrome. Within 2 years of receiving a drivers license, 70% of all teens are involved in an auto accident. Car accidents often result in Nerve Impingement Syndrome. Because there are so many causes of Nerve Impingement Syndrome, everyone at some time or another will suffer from NIS. In many cases, the symptoms do not appear for months or even years. When the body detects a problem, over time it compensates for it. This compensation causes PAIN. If left untreated, this condition could lead to the destruction of the joint and irreversible damage to the nerve, causing chronic pain or worse.
