create growth for the entire business community. Chamber members and staff work diligently alongside business owners to help make that happen. One way the Chamber is helping create strong business leaders within the community is through the Leadership Okeechobee Program. Leadership Okeechobee is comprised of nine monthly, daylong sessions that expose participants to critical issues facing Okeechobee, major industries operating within the community, and structured personal/skill assessments. The Chamber works passionately to help diversify the base of businesses in the community, while encouraging the creation of additional highwage job opportunities. Our strengths lie in the number and diversity of our membership. Both large and small businesses from virtually every profession are represented and influence investment in the Chamber. The Members Are The Chamber! The more members the Chamber has, the better we can represent the business community. We accomplish what no business can do alone.

BUSINESS EXCHANGE LUNCHEON

The Chamber hosts quarterly Business Exchange Luncheons throughout the year, during the months of January, April, July and October. January and April feature topics requested by members, while July honors our Community Heroes, and October honors our businesses at the Business of the Year Awards luncheon. Regardless of the content, the Business Exchange Luncheons are just one of our many networking opportunities available throughout the year. Each luncheon is geared towards introducing new members into the community and making connections, while soaking up the knowledge of those who are presenting. Presenters come in many forms at these events. Main speakers are selected by the Business of the Year Luncheon

2019 Community Heroes Luncheon

RISE UP WITH THE CHAMBER

Rise Up with the Chamber is our early morning event that begins at 7:45 a.m. and runs until 8:30 a.m. It’s always a productive and stimulating 45 minutes of networking before heading off to work. Each month is hosted by a different Chamber member, and they are always the first on the agenda to talk about their business or organization. We always have three to four other businesses that have the opportunity to speak as well. From January through November, you will learn not only about other members of the local community but also about new programs and initiatives, while enjoying a light breakfast supplied by the host. These events, while typically held at the host’s location, can be held at the

20

Chamber offices as well for mobile or small companies. If you are not able to attend a breakfast, don’t worry: We have your back. We stream our speakers live so you can join in anywhere at #ChamberCandidCamera.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS

Business After Hours events can be found at most chambers, but none do them quite like we do! BAH, for short, is presented monthly, and is hosted by a different business each month, typically at the host’s place of business but potentially at Chamber offices too. At a BAH event, it is all about showcasing the host business as we learn about what it has to offer as well

as what it does for the community. Networking and light refreshments are from 5 to 5:45 p.m., and then it’s time for an ice-breaker activity! Activities range from tours, games, contests and more, each directly related to the business but geared towards forging new relationships among those in attendance. Once the activity comes to a close, the host business has the floor. When finished, we allow time for community announcements.

SHOP SMALL

The Chamber of Commerce has joined forces with American Express to bring the Okeechobee community the Small Business Saturday shopping holiday! In 2019, Small Business Saturday celebrated 10 years of this great shopping holiday. It’s giving that extra push to begin your early Christmas shopping

not at big-box stores, but rather at local mom-and-pop retailers. Shop Small is a movement that may have started up north but is best celebrated in Okeechobee! With numbers growing each and every year, it’s hard to choose which stores to go to— not to mention our pop-up shops located in beautiful downtown Flagler Park on this Saturday as well. Shoppers begin at the welcome station in Flagler Park, where Chamber staff and volunteers provide them with a passport/map of all the businesses who are participating and what deals they are offering shoppers to help check off gifts from their Christmas lists! Shopping Small and Shopping Local is what continues to support our businesses.

A FASHIONABLE AFTERNOON WITH THE CHAMBER

A Fashionable Afternoon with the Chamber is an annual fashion show hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County for the sole purpose of promoting our local businesses involved in the fashion and pampering sector. Each year local retailers, stylists and models will participate in a one-ofa-kind afternoon/evening runway show to display all Okeechobee has to offer! Models are from all age categories and genders, and family combos are encouraged!

Onsite for our magical evening are professional photographers to capture each model as well as our guests’ special night out. As guests arrive they are greeted by retailers participating in the show as well as a variety of other vendors for you to patronize. During the intermission, we feature our hometown dance studios to perform some of the most beautiful numbers you have ever seen, as our models get ready for the second runway show. You can’t really have a good show without good food, so we bring in the best of the best and their tasty Okeechobee-style cuisine! With all of these components, we create a show you’ll wish we had every month.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

ncompassing an area of 892 square miles and located just 30 minutes away from Florida’s Turnpike and I-95, Okeechobee has long served as the driving force in the dairy and agricultural business as well as a fishing destination. And while we are proud of our roots, we are keeping an eye on the future. The Okeechobee County Economic Development Corporation (OCEDC) was formed in 2018 when the Board of Directors of the Economic Council of Okeechobee recognized the need for growth and diversity in the local economy. They helped to form a publicprivate partnership that is supported by the county, city and private investors, who all saw the need to hire a full-time advocate who would devote every working hour to help the community grow and prosper into the future. At its core, OCEDC connects the public and private sectors to create wealth in the

community, which provides our residents with higher-paying jobs, our existing companies with impeccable customer service, and new companies with flexible resources. Okeechobee County is home to more than 297,000 acres of farmland with almost 500 farms. Top-producing farms include dairy cows, nurseries/greenhouses and citrus crops, according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Seven of the 15 largest cattle ranches in the country are located within 80 miles of Okeechobee. Williamson Cattle Company, a third-generation argibusiness that has been ranked among the top 10 ranches in the nation by the Cattleman’s Beef Association, is one of Okeechobee’s success stories. “The advantage to being in Okeechobee County is that this is a subtropical environment,” says Wes Williamson, company president. “We get maybe two to four frosts a year,

One is located in the county at the Airport Industrial Park with almost 100 acres, and is currently home to more than a dozen companies. The available lots are all shovel-ready with roads, power, water and high-speed internet. About half of the park also has natural gas, which can be extended if needed. “We are always open for new businesses to come in,” says Adam Hied, manager of Okeechobee County Airport & Industrial Park. “We have competitive lease rates for our aeronautical and non-aeronautical businesses; we’re looking to expand and grow.” The Okeechobee Commerce Center is located in the city limits and is a 124-acre park that has all of the

necessary infrastructure as well as CSX rail service. In addition, the county has plenty of wide-open spaces that could easily be developed for industrial use. Okeechobee is also home to several international businesses specializing in everything from roof tile manufacturing to online automobile auctions to using fermentation to help produce renewable chemicals for industries across the world. One such manufacturer, Charles Composites, supplies a comprehensive

line of active and passive, metallic and non-metallic environmental enclosure solutions for communications and power distribution applications. It’s part of the Charles Industries family, a diversified manufacturing and technology company founded in Schaumberg, Illinois in 1968. “Charles Industries’ Charles Composites is proud to be a member of the Okeechobee community,” says Jen Sinclair, human resources manager. “As a result of the support of then-Governor Rick Scott’s office, the

Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), the Division of Strategic Business Development QTI program, the Enterprise Zone Program, and Okeechobee County administrators, we opened our doors in July 2013. “Our Composites facility has gone through many changes since our opening. We are very proud of our associates and their commitment to deliver quality solutions to our customers. Florida Power & Light, AT&T and Verizon, as well as many other service providers, are all critical users of the enclosures we produce. Our advanced composite solutions provide the best total value in terms of cost and safety for our customers.” In addition, the 2019 Aspen Awardwinning Indian River State College has a campus in Okeechobee to help educate workers for future growth in our region. It has also been recognized as the most affordable college in the United States.

The Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County plays a significant role in the growth of our community as we strive to make businesses stronger, as well as to make a stronger economic climate for those businesses to thrive. TOURIST DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL

Okeechobee County’s Tourist Development Council (TDC) was established with the adoption of County Ordinance 62-128 in 1992. This tax allows the tourism coordinator and Tourist Development Council Advisory Board to find unique and creative ways to promote our community to inspire visitors to come and explore. The Tourist Development Council promotes Okeechobee County as a desirable tourist destination by funding marketing campaigns and local events that enhance Okeechobee’s economy while preserving natural resources and the quality of life. This mission speaks to its conscientious preservation of old Florida’s natural beauty and “downhome” hospitality. The TDC is a single-person department within Okeechobee County supported by a group of individuals that volunteer their time to participate as an Advisory Board to ensure fiscal responsibility of the Tourist Development Tax as well as discuss tourismrelated issues or opportunities. The TDC develops marketing campaigns and plans as well as hosts community

that make business thrive in Okeechobee events that have strong economic impacts to Okeechobee. The TDC is also the visitor’s resource for local events, businesses, attractions and exploration.

OKEECHOBEE MAIN STREET

Okeechobee Main Street, Inc. is a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit organization with roots dating back to 1980 when the National Trust for Historic Preservation formed the Main Street program. The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the downtown or central business district, producing both tangible and intangible benefits. Improving economic management, strengthening public participation, and making downtown a fun place to visit are as critical to Main Street’s future as recruiting new businesses, rehabilitating buildings and expanding parking. Building on downtown’s inherent assets—rich architecture, personal service, traditional values and, most of all, a sense of place—the Main Street approach has rekindled entrepreneurship, downtown cooperation and civic concern. It has earned national recognition as a practical strategy appropriately scaled to a community’s local resources and conditions. And because it is a

locally driven program, all initiative stems from local issues and concerns.

OKEECHOBEE COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION The Okeechobee County Economic Development Corporation (OCEDC) was formed in 2018 by a group of business leaders who saw the need for an organization whose sole focus was to attract new industries to the county. It is a public-private partnership with the city, county and private companies who have invested their time, money and talent to help ensure that Okeechobee prospers and grows. The core mission of the OCEDC is to facilitate the connection between the public and private sector to create economic diversification for our county. The goal is to bring additional jobs offering higher salaries to our citizens and giving our youth opportunities for seeking employment locally. We are also committed to being there for our existing industries by providing impeccable customer service and assisting them in their expansion needs.

ECONOMIC COUNCIL OF OKEECHOBEE

The Economic Council of Okeechobee County is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization formed to act as a catalyst between the public and private sectors to promote open dialogue, collaboration and action. The ECO exists to serve as a single, united voice for the business leaders of the community, providing a platform recognized by the city, county and the State of Florida. Action is taken on issues to promote prudent economic growth and advocate for improved quality of life in Okeechobee County. The Council encourages principles of good government and good citizenship, provides a forum for open discussion on matters of public interest, and seeks to inspire service-minded citizens to serve their community. For almost 30 years, the ECO has proudly served Okeechobee County and has grown to more than 50 members. Membership of the Council is comprised of a diverse coalition of top industry, business and professional leaders with an active and influential role in the community. ECO members are expected to exhibit the highest level of ethical business practices and are frequently active in other civic, charitable and political causes.

and dairy farms. A decade later, Okeechobee’s agricultural opportunities and idyllic weather were being touted in advertisements, as in this promotional booklet from the St. Lucie County Board of Trade, published in 1915: “Try to imagine an infinitely big country that grows the finest corn, cane, oranges, grapefruit and other fruits, vegetables of all kinds and provides pasture for livestock every month in the year, with a mild and delightful climate, warmed by tropical ocean breezes in winter and cooled by the same breezes in summer, and you have a faint conception of this God’s country which is destined to become one of the greatest food-producing sections in the Union.” Business and tourism continued to spike in the mid-1910s, when Henry Flagler’s railroad snaked through Okeechobee, boosting its population. The City of Okeechobee would be established in 1915, with the county designation following two years later. Education and health care advanced with the times. In 1915, one of the area’s first doctors, Anna Darrow,

32

arrived; she was just the second woman in the state to become a certified physician. The building housing the business she started with her husband, Park Drugs, still stands. The Darrows also served Okeechobee’s residents with the city’s first health clinic, but it was the Raulersons who opened its first hospital, the Louisana Channelor Raulerson Hospital, in 1949. Their pioneering legacy still emblazons the city’s H.H. Raulerson Hospital, opened in 1977 and named after Peter’s great-grandson and a local physician. Okeechobee’s original makeshift, one-room schoolhouse, fashioned in 1907 in the loft of Peter Raulerson’s barn with all of 11 students—five of whom were “borrowed” from an adjoining town—blossomed into the first freestanding brick school in 1916; in 2020, it will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its first graduating class! Today, Okeechobee is home to nine public schools and one institution of higher learning, a campus of Indian River State College, which opened in the 1960s.

In short, the aforementioned promotional booklet from St. Lucie County still says it best: “Okeechobee has a brilliant future in prospect. Its splendid location in St. Lucie County insures good health in one of the most comfortable climates in the world. A city for homes, for business, a Mecca for the tourist, the winter resident and the sportsman. … There is every reason to believe that an era of unprecedented growth and development is ahead of Okeechobee and that the fast-growing town is destined to excel the fondest hopes of its promoters.” The Historical Society of Okeechobee contributed generously to the information in this article. Indian River State College

EDUCATION

or more than 30 years, Okeechobee’s Dixon-Hendry Campus of Indian River State College (IRSC) has been providing first-rate general and specialized education to students throughout the county and beyond. A recent award testifies to the college’s strengths: IRSC won the 2019 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, recognizing the multi-campus institution as the top community college by the venerable Aspen Institute. This distinction adds to IRSC’s previous ranking as the third-most-affordable college in the U.S., per the United States Department of Education. “There’s quality plus affordability,” summarizes Russ Brown, provost of the Dixon-Hendry Campus, adding, “This institution is a jewel in the community.” Serving approximately 800 students each semester, the Dixon-Hendry Campus offers more than 100 academic programs, including

two-year associate of arts or science degrees and 18 bachelor’s degree programs. Just as importantly, the campus provides a number of certificate programs for specific professions, from auto repair to welding to A/C refrigeration to nursing. Brown says he looks to the needs of local high schools when organizing the campus’ programming, noting that 300 students participate in dual enrollment in both high school and IRSC at the time of this writing. “That’s my role as provost, to get a feel for community needs. It’s why I’m on over a dozen boards,” Brown says. “Those certificate and associate degree programs we offer, we try to be the next level of the programs the high schools offer—career technical education at middle and high school levels. We piggyback, and have the programs those would lead into. There’s a great relationship there.”

TRANSPORTATION or those whose business in Okeechobee is often “up in the air,” the county has its own airport to serve their general aviation needs. The Okeechobee Airport, located at 2800 N.W. 20th Trail, is a safe, friendly and well-maintained facility designed to serve the current and future commercial, corporate, governmental, and general aviation needs of Okeechobee County and southern Florida. According to Airport Director Adam Hied, this can mean everything from pilots flying singleengine piston planes, to flyers stopping off for aircraft painting and light maintenance, to corporate jets flying in and out of Okeechobee for business or pleasure. “A guy flew in on his jet, had his boat brought down separately, and walked from his jet into his car that had the boat hooked up ready to go bass fishing,” recalls Hied. Unlike some community airports, the Okeechobee Airport has become its own economic driver and community hangout. The on-site Landing Strip Café draws locals and visitors for some of the best breakfast and lunch in the county, while a 96-acre industrial park attached to the airport is a boon to local businesses. The park is currently home to 13 tenants in the sales, manufacturing, maintenance and life science industries. To learn more about the park’s competitive lease rates, contact Hied at 863-467-5505. For visitors traveling to Okeechobee commercially, the closest commuter airport is Palm Beach International (PBI) in West Palm Beach. PBI hosts 11 airlines and 200 daily

flights from 30 locations in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. The user-friendly, efficient service at PBI has won numerous awards from industry insiders. Car rental services, located on Level One near the baggage claim, include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt and Thrifty. From the airport, Okeechobee is an uncongested 65-mile drive straight up FL-710 West, spanning roughly 75 minutes. For a more photogenic trip, route your trip so that you take the historic, 12-mile Martin Grade Scenic Highway (County Road 714) part of the way up. Motorists drive through a shaded canopy of century-old oaks, with views of pastures, groves, swamps and woods unspoiled from the time of Florida’s earliest settlers. It’s a great way to get a sense of the wilds of Okeechobee before you arrive. Other commuter options include Orlando Melbourne International Airport, a small airport 85 miles north of Okeechobee; and Orlando International Airport, a larger and more bustling airport 100 miles north of Okeechobee. Amtrak runs through Okeechobee as well; the county’s train station is conveniently located at 801 N. Parrott Ave., walking distance from major businesses, accommodations and clinics. For ground travel in Okeechobee, ride-share services or a friendly cab ride from Wisener’s Hometown Taxi (863-223-3227) can get you where you need to go. Automobiles can be rented at Enterprise, the county’s lone rental car service, located at 4255 S. Highway 441 (863-763-1029).

ABOUT LAKE OKEECHOBEE Robert Sadler Clark

t 730 square miles, Lake Okeechobee is not only the central geographic element of Okeechobee County; it’s also visible from space. Translated from the Seminole Indian word for “big water,” Lake O certainly lives up to its name. It is the secondlargest natural freshwater lake in the contiguous United States, and it’s larger than the state of Rhode Island. At least seven rivers, streams, creeks and sloughs flow into the lake, and Okeechobee County is one of five counties in Florida surrounding its perimeter. Lake Okeechobee is central to Florida’s environment. Formed approximately 6,000 years ago, it can store up to 1.05 trillion gallons of water. It provides flood and risk management, agricultural irrigation, salinity and regional groundwater control, and water supply for municipalities and industries throughout the surrounding region. The rich

soil surrounding the lake, known as “black gold” to the locals, has made it ideal ground for dairy and cattle farmers and the sugarcane industry. The lake is also a key driver in the county’s economy, drawing locals and part-time residents alike on the strength of its unparalleled opportunities for anglers. It’s no wonder the lake has become known as the Bass Fishing Capital of the World. “Our city population almost doubles in the wintertime, because northerners like to enjoy our beautiful city, our wonderful climate, and a lake that is just full of fish,” summarizes Wes Williamson, president of Okeechobee’s Williamson Cattle Company. “It’s a special place.” References to Lake Okeechobee date back centuries. The earliest acknowledgments of the lake date to the 16th century, as reported by Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda,

keechobee, famously, is home to more cows than people, and the sight of free-roaming beef and dairy cattle is a common sight throughout the county. But bovines are just one part of the county’s ecosystem of wildlife, which collectively make Okeechobee an engaging destination for nature lovers. With its abundance of towering oak trees and cabbage hammocks, and, of course, Lake Okeechobee, the county is a convenient home for a myriad of species. Florida gators find refuge in Lake O and can often be spotted peeking from the water and sunning themselves on embankments. In fact, according to one census reported by NBC News, the lake boasts the largest concentration of alligators in the U.S., with two airboats counting 754 alligators in just three hours! Visitors also enjoy seeing, and catching, the variety of fish life that has taken up resi-

dence in the lake, including largemouth bass, black crappie and catfish. Okeechobee also includes four spots on the Great Florida Birding Trail, so sightseeing with binoculars is a plus. The best spot for birding, according to Paul Gray, science coordinator for Audubon Florida’s Everglades Restoration Program, is the Clif Betts Recreation Area at Lock 7, where spectators can observe sunset flights of birds heading to roost on Eagle Bay Island. Other great official birding spots include Okee-Tantie Recreation Area (wood storks, songbirds, woodpeckers and great blue herons like to hang here) and the Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area (home to crested caracaras, limpkins and roseate spoonbills). With its lush diversity of habitats, Kissimmee Prairie Preserve, Florida’s largest state park, welcomes more than 150 avian species. One great way to maximize wildlife viewing

This popular option for locals and ecotourists provides a chance to see alligators and birds up close, the balmy breezes whipping your hair. For animals with sustained injuries preventing their

Visitors to AWRC can observe white-tailed deer, Albino wallabies, kangaroos, red foxes and lemurs, among others; the facility also operates its own butterfly garden. AWRC appreciates any tax-deductible donations, both financial or in the form of non-monetary supplies such as towels, bird food, pet toys and much more. ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

or more than a dozen years, the arts presence in Okeechobee has been beautifying the downtown landscape while strengthening its cultural footprint. Art can be felt throughout the city and beyond—from the county courthouse, which hosts rotating exhibitions with local themes, to the massive, abstract horse sculpture “Ready to Run,” which greets visitors to the Okeechobee Public Library. Sometimes, the art projects dotting downtown have an educational component, as in the Okeechobee Mural Program, whose ongoing series of wall-sized murals depicts scenes from Okeechobee’s culture and history: cattle drives, life on the ranch, the Native American population, and the county’s first telephone company and hardware store. But the most visually striking public art

installation is the Butterfly Sculpture Project in Flagler Park, whose eight large metal butterflies were painted by local artists and students, each sculpture reflecting the artist’s individual style. These make for popular and colorful photo ops. Other arts and entertainment mediums are on the rise as well. The venerable Okeechobee Community Theatre is in the midst of its 41st season of reasonably priced musicals, comedies, mysteries and dramas starring local performers. The Okeechobee Ballet Company hosts formal dance instruction, classes open to the community, and occasional performances. Hollywood blockbusters screen at the Brahman Theatre III, the county’s only movie theater, and live music can be enjoyed Friday and Saturday nights at Seminole Brighton Casino.
