Visitor Information

The Tourist Development Tax allows the Tourism Coordinator and Tourist Development Council Advisory Board to find unique and creative ways to promote our community to inspire visitors to come and explore. The mission statement for the TDC is as follows: The Tourist Development Council promotes Okeechobee County as a desirable tourist destination by funding marketing campaigns and local events that enhance Okeechobee’s economy while preserving natural resources and the quality of life. This mission speaks to our conscientious preservation of Old Florida’s natural beauty and “down home” hospitality. The TDC is a single-person department within Okeechobee County supported by a group of individuals that volunteer their time to participate as an Advisory Board to ensure fiscal responsibility of the Tourist Development Tax as well as to discuss tourism-related issues or opportunities. The TDC develops marketing campaigns and plans as well as hosts community events that have strong economic impacts to Okeechobee. The TDC is also the visitor’s resource for local events, businesses, attractions and exploration. The Tourist Development Council office is now in a building with the Chamber of Commerce, which has been rebranded as the Visitor Center located at the main intersection of town. The Okeechobee County TDC has a number of local and state partners with whom we work to promote our community.

Welcome from the Tourism Coordinator

Welcome to Okeechobee, where southern-style hospitality and exciting outdoor activities await! Okeechobee is on the northern shore of Lake Okeechobee, the second-largest freshwater lake in the contiguous United States. With that being said, Okeechobee offers an angler’s paradise, with more than 730 square miles of unrivaled fishing nirvana. If fishing doesn’t have you hooked, hunting the natural landscapes of old Florida should certainly thrill you! Experience some of the most beautiful wildlife and scenery Florida has to offer. The outdoor adventures continue with unparalleled star gazing experiences at the only Dark Sky accredited state park in Florida, Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park. This beautiful park offers not only an astronomer’s dream but dozens of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and a preserve filled with birds of all shapes, sizes and rarity. As you plan that special trip to South Florida, include this rural community that offers all the best and sometimes forgotten things of Florida. Okeechobee’s hometown restaurants will tempt the taste buds, while specialty boutiques and shops speak to those looking for that unique item to take home. Stories are told with the wonderful murals located throughout downtown and the blossoming public art that is finding its place in this town we call home. Memories are made in memorable places. Make memories in Okeechobee, and come outside and play!
