Responding to the COVID-19 Challenge In a normal year, Palm Beach County would be bustling with business activity — busy shops, crowded restaurants, and early teetimes on the golf course. Instead, we have all adjusted our lives to navigate the global COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses of all kinds have implemented work-from-home policies, but thanks to smartphones, tablets, videoconferencing and credit cards, we can still conduct business in ways that would not have been possible before the advent of the internet. The BDB team will continue to stay in contact with state, regional and local officials to ensure that Palm Beach County’s key decision-makers have the most up-to-date information regarding business and the overall health of the economy. In collaboration with the Economic Council and Palm Beach County staff, the BDB is convening industry groups to ensure that we maintain the safest environment for our residents while also working to reopen the economy. Some positive news is that we’re still working with companies that plan to create more than 1,000 jobs in Palm Beach County by the end of 2020. These jobs are in sectors such as distribution, infotech, manufacturing, life sciences, and financial services. In fact, many wholesale operations are hiring more workers to meet increased demand for essential goods and delivery services. This issue of Palm Beach County Business includes a report of nearly 20 companies that have relocated to or expanded in Palm Beach County over the past six months, as well as efforts launched by the Business Development Board to further stimulate the economy during these uncertain times. Since we are committed to supporting local businesses, we’ve launched several initiatives such as the new county-wide website BizHelpPBC.com, a new series of weekly town hall teleconferences, and many connections that facilitated the growth of small businesses. Our other feature articles include a close look at the dynamic partnership between education and business in our county and our powerful appeal to logistics and distribution companies serving our state. Thank you as always for your support during this challenging time. I am confident that our community will learn from this experience and become stronger than ever. Best wishes and stay healthy!

TOGETHER,

We’re Shaping

Palm Beach County’s

FUTURE

As businesses across the region and the globe continue to respond to the COVID-19 crisis, the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, in partnership with Palm Beach County, Economic Council of Palm Beach County, local chambers of commerce and municipalities, has stepped up to support local companies.

A new countywide website was launched to connect companies with assistance needed for full recovery. Visit BizHelpPBC.com to access this resource. Palm Beach County is resilient and together, and its leaders are shaping the future. It’s a community that thrives together and strives to be better in uncertain times. n The School District of Palm Beach County’s students shifted into virtual learning, but companies such as Comcast, AT&T and StilesNicolson Foundation stepped up to ensure every student has the tools and technology to continue learning. n The Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter has nearly 40 scientists working around the clock to develop drugs and vaccines needed to combat the coronavirus pandemic. n Palm Beach County is home to more than 15 hospitals that are saving lives, while still communicating with the public. n Gift of Life Marrow Registry in Boca Raton increased service

availability to ensure transplants are not delayed at its state-of-theart collection center, one of the only few in the U.S. not based in a hospital. In fact, Gift of Life donated 10,000 swabs to Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health. n Florida Power & Light lowered electric bills for local residents twice during the pandemic. n Florida Crystals donated nearly 80,000 pounds of sugar, which reached distilleries making hand sanitizers. n Nova Southeastern University’s programs in Respiratory Therapy in the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences donated eight ventilators to local hospitals in Palm Beach County. As Palm Beach County’s official economic development resource, the Business Development Board provides connections to available loans for companies, launched countywide platforms, and created an Economic Recovery Plan for local businesses.

Florida Crystals Helps Feed Community “Our local farms have helped feed our communities for generations,” said Pepe Fanjul, Jr., EVP. “We are committed to continuing to work with local nonprofits, community leaders and our farming community to ensure that children and families have the resources they need to make it through this crisis.” Florida Crystals completed its 2019/20 sugarcane crop season, while implementing strict health and safety standards to combat COVID-19 while working hard to keep grocery store shelves stocked and food makers supplied during this time of crisis. In total, the company produced more than 729,250 short tons raw value (STRV) sugar and more than 39.5 million gallons of molasses. Florida Crystals’ 59th season also marked its largest organic crop. With families cooking and baking at home now more than ever, the company is continuing to work hard to meet the demand for its organic and raw cane sugar products. “We have a wonderful team of employees, and we can’t express enough our sincerest appreciation for the special effort everyone made during a season that brought challenges no one could ever have imagined,” said Gaston Cantens, VP. Florida Crystals’ rice mill has been bustling to restock store shelves and package rice for donations to feed vulnerable families, children and seniors during the crisis. In partnership with organizations, including Feeding South Florida, Fresh RX Kids, the Boys & Girls Club, the Palm Beach County Food Bank and along with leaders in the Glades communities, the company has donated more than 50,000 pounds of rice to date to those who need it most.

Bringing Leaders in

BUSINESS

and

EDUCATION

Together Before the global pandemic forced partnerships to go virtual, Palm Beach County

High School students experienced in-person interactions with the top business leaders in the County.

This year’s BDB

Claim Your Future Showcase in February brought the most students in its history thanks to the support from the private sector. Wells Fargo stepped up as the event’s grand sponsor and presented financial literacy skills to the students, while CenterState Bank and Comvest Partners funded extra buses to bring more students to the Palm Beach County Convention Center. ESPN West Palm provided prize giveaways for the students. The Business Development Board launched this initiative five years ago, which shows Palm Beach County high school students the possible career paths that they can take, ultimately retaining top talent in the County for local business. The event has secured partners such as the School District of Palm Beach County, Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches & Treasure Coast, CareerSource Palm Beach County, and more than 50 diverse companies.

6 | pbc business summer 2020

The first ever “Glades Edition” of the Claim Your Future Showcase was also launched a few days after the countywide event, inspiring nearly 200 students at Pahokee High School and Glades Central High School. They heard from a panel with Carpenter Electric, Florida Crystals, Florida Power & Light, Florida Atlantic University and Palm Beach State College, as well as a soft skills presentation from CareerSource Palm Beach County, teaching the basics of interacting in the professional world. This initiative resulted in:

Tortoise Properties:

Aiming for Long-Term Success

1501 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, Tortoise Properties

Jake Geleerd knows

many mid-size and large businesses need capital support during the COVID-19 economic slowdown. As CEO of Tortoise Family Office and a volunteer leader in Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and Chief Executives Organization (CEO), Geleerd teamed with other family office executives to form Tortoise Exchange. “Our goal is to help good people with good businesses that need $2 million or more by offering a partnership to help them survive and thrive,” said Geleerd. “We can provide both liquidity and valuable experience. We have been through this before and no one needs to go through this alone. Our slogan is ‘make it through to 2022.”

12 | pbc business summer 2020

Along with providing financial support to businesses in trouble or innovators who see opportunities, Geleerd manages one of the largest office portfolios in Palm Beach County. He is president and CEO of Tortoise Properties, LLC, with offices in Chicago and North Palm Beach. “Our portfolio includes high-quality commercial and residential properties across the country,” he said. “A goal of ours is to be one of the nation’s leading real estate investment firms to pass on to our kids. Like the tortoise, we make carefully calculated decisions and build strong partnerships to ensure long-term success.” In Palm Beach County, Tortoise Properties has about 360,000 square feet of office space, including 1501 Yamato Road, a Class A

172,000-square-foot office campus in Boca Raton which serves as industry leader ADT Securities’ global headquarters. To the north, Tortoise Properties recently acquired Jupiter Innovation Center, a 186,000-square-foot building at 1701 Military Trail in Jupiter. The tenants include Florida Turbine Technologies, Jupiter Medical Center and other medical, office and research and development firms. The company, with its local partner PEBB Enterprises and industry-leading CBRE, is leasing about 60,000 square feet of new space at the Jupiter property. Why is the Chicago and North Palm Beach-based family office investing so heavily in Palm Beach County? “We like to be active in markets where governments are pro-business from the state level to

the local municipalities,” said Geleerd. “People want to live in Palm Beach County, where there is ample housing for employees as well as executives. There are tons of fine restaurants and world-class cultural facilities, as well as year-round sun and outdoor sports and activities, and, of course, an excellent state income tax climate. The Business Development Board is doing a great job promoting Palm Beach County to the nation and world.”

Pahokee School’s

ROBOTICS PROGRAM GAINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

PAHOKEE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL IS GAINING NATIONAL ACADEMIC RECOGNITION FOR its innovative robotics program. Pahokee Middle and High School is gaining national academic recognition for its innovative robotics program. Since its launch in the 2016-17 school year, the school’s Subaroos teams have competed at the state championship tournament as one of the best in Palm Beach County and South Florida. “I am so proud of our robotics program that I brought to Pahokee Middle,” said Dwayne L. Dennard, principal. “To see it grow into the recognizable program it is today, is due to the hard work of our supporters, students, mentors and most importantly our coaches.” “Four years ago, the robotics program started off with three students as part of the competitive team that earned its way all the way to the First Lego League State Tournament,”said Coach Luis Paniaqua, head of the program. “Since then, the number of students has grown to two First Lego League teams at Pahokee Middle School and the first high school First Tech Challenge robotics team for our students at Pahokee High School,” he said. In the 2017-18 school year, the Pahokee Subaroos earned a bid to participate at the FIRST Lego League Razorback Invitational National Tournament where Paniaqua was named the “Robotics Coach of the Year” in 2018-19. “We are helping to build a tradition to make Pahokee known academically just as it is for athletics,” said Paniaqua. “While this is still a fairly young program, our students have rapidly made an impact in the South Florida robotics circles and beyond. Equally important is the impact that our students are making in our community and in the world as a whole.”

COUNTY CORNER Economic Development and Business Investment Support for Life Sciences in Palm Beach County

By Sherry Howard, Deputy Director Palm Beach County Department of Housing and Economic Sustainability

PALM BEACH COUNTY OPEN FOR BUSINESS The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners’ commitment to the business community remains paramount, especially during the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak. As the threat of the pandemic strengthened, the board adopted a two-pronged approach: (1) provide information and technical assistance regarding federal and state-level relief programs, and (2) ensure that Palm Beach County’s existing business investment and economic development programs and services remain open and accessible.

developments in the recovery process. Businesses and individuals can also rely on the Palm Beach County Library System for assistance. Ask-A-Librarian staffers are available by phone, email and online chat to answer questions or provide help filling out unemployment/reemployment forms. Employment and reemployment applications in English, Spanish, and Creole are available for pickup outside 13 library branches, including the Belle Glade location. Most importantly, Palm Beach County is operating and delivering the critical services and programs our citizens need. The Palm Beach County Business Loan Program administered by HES continues to provide eligible borrowers with low-interest long-term financing for their business projects. In fact, in the midst of COVID19, five loans were funded to support the expansion of existing businesses within Palm Beach County. Be assured, once the health threat posed by the coronavirus subsides and we begin to see a return to normalcy, getting local businesses reopened and people safely back to work is Priority One. Before, during and after the crisis, Palm Beach County remains “open for business.” To learn more please contact me at 561-233-3600 or showard@pbcgov.org.
