PALM BEACH COUNTY BUSINESS PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA

From the CEO

Education Environment Equals Economic Success

PALM BEACH COUNTY’S educational offerings are top-notch when compared to other locations. Many executives who have relocated from the Northeast U.S. have been pleasantly surprised that their children are receiving just as good, if not better, of an education. They’re not only excelling academically; the family has more time to spend together and it’s a life well lived in the sunshine.

From the A-rated School District of Palm Beach County to our charter, private and faith-based schools, the county has earned a reputation for unmatched academics that prepare our students for life and career success in the workplace of tomorrow.

In addition to working with public and private schools from K-12, the Business Development Board leads several other education initiatives. Our Academic Leaders Council is comprised of university presidents as well as our superintendent. Those meetings focus on industry and curriculum alignment to discuss skill sets needed by local employers. Our “Claim Your Future Showcase” brings over 1,000 high school students to the Palm Beach County Convention Center each year to meet with industry leaders and our Private School Headmasters Task Force meets to address the need for expansion due to growth over the last three years.

Our academics challenge students in every discipline. From Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture and Math (STEAM), to business, finance, and pre-law and, even entre-preneurship, families and nd a rigorous and stimulating educational environment. From hundreds of specialty career and enrichment programs to schools that were formed 100 years ago, there are plenty of options for a student new to the area.

Our welcoming climate continues to attract hundreds of executives and their families every day from the Northeast, Midwest, even California. Those who’ve arrived have discovered education as a key incentive needed by any business eager to thrive in the sunshine. Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, a Palm Beach County native who decided to relocate his entire investment management company from Chicago to South Florida, including an office in Palm Beach County, put it best: “Taxes weren’t part of our decision to come to Florida,” he told Fox News. The Sunshine State has “great schools, a great environment and your streets are safe and clean.” The Business Development Board, Palm Beach County’s official economic development organization, assists relocating executives with introductions to public and private school leaders. It’s part of the many complimentary services available to a company relocating to Palm Beach County, alongside expedited permitting, property searches, and local concierge services.

If you’re relocating your business to Palm Beach County—or you already live here and want to learn more about our world-class academics from grade school to grad school and beyond—the Business Development Board can help. Visit www.PBCEDU.org or give us a call. We’ll introduce you and your family to the schools that have earned praise for helping prepare today’s student for tomorrow’s success.

Execs, Families Thrive in Local Schools

Benjamin G. Boynton Frank Baker

BENJAMIN G. BOYNTON

is the parent of fourth-generation students of schools in Palm Beach County. He attended Cardinal Newman, and went off to earn his degree in finance from the University of Florida. His children attended public schools through eighth grade, which prepared them well in their high school classes at Oxbridge Academy, from visionary founder Bill Koch.

Today, Boynton is a certified financial planner and branch manager with Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. His son earned his pilot’s license before enrolling in Georgia Tech for aerospace engineering, and returning to Palm Beach County to work with aerospace leader Aerojet Rocketdyne. His daughter is in the New Studio on Broadway at New York University, with a double major in musical theater and journalism.

“I absolutely believe we have some of the best schools in the country, right here in Palm Beach County,” Boynton said.

what his family needed.

His long commute to work has been replaced with extra time spent with his kids or on the sidelines at their various games. He also realized the local educational options created a solid pool of workforce talent that will help Siris grow. And those grade schools help attract executive talent to the market, too.

From lifestyle to education, "I thought there was no better place to raise a family than New York,” he said. “But I was wrong.”

DANIEL CANE grew up in Wellington and Lake Worth. He “proudly” attended Lake Worth High School, earned the rank of Cadet Lt. Colonel Air Force JROTC—and student council president.

Upon graduation in 1994, Cane went off to Cornell University to earn his degree in applied economics. In his senior year, he co-founded educational platform CourseInfo LLC, which later merged with Blackboard LLC—and sold for $1.6 billion in 2011.

Cane traces part of his success back to his public school education in Palm Beach County. He was challenged with honors and AP classes, and as the parent of kids who also attended public schools, he knows those opportunities still exist today. This bodes well for Cane, who today runs electronic medical records platform Modernizing Medicine. His company hires interns and employees versed in STEM disciplines from, among other schools, Florida Atlantic University, where Cane sits on the Board of Trustees and helped create the Cane Institute for Advanced Technologies at A.D. Henderson / FAU High School.

“As an employer, our county's current public and private offerings are exceptional,” he said. “Many people outside of the region know our private schools are some of the best in the country, but they might not know that

A Place For PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS

Florida last year ranked top—and Palm Beach County ranked first in the state—in the U.S. Department of Education’s list of President Scholars. It is considered one of the most prestigious academic awards for high school graduates. Florida had nine students and the county had three among the 161 high school seniors honored for academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields. Palm Beach County honorees included two from Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach and one from West Boca Raton Community High School.

Kailey Worontsoff and Miles Wang, 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars

Public, Private and Parochial

AMONG THE SCHOOL options available here, Palm Beach County has 180 school district-operated public schools, 40 charter schools and 110 private and faith-based. These include alternative schools, schools with religious affiliation, academic academies, prep schools, independent schools, music- and art-oriented academies, Montessori education, and many others.

The School District of Palm Beach County is the 10th-largest school district in the country, with enrollment of more than 170,000 students and an annual budget of $3.8 billion. Not only is the district one of only two large Florida school districts to receive the coveted “A” rating, it has no schools on the state’s list of Persistently Low Performing Schools, said Superintendent Mike Burke, who also is a member of the national Council of Great City Schools.

For career-focused students, the district offers more than 330 choice and career programs that align with

current and future workforce needs. “As Palm Beach County’s business community thrives and expands, the School District works collaboratively with local industries to ensure that our A-rated District creates career pathways that are beneficial to students and employers alike,” he said.

“The educational system in Florida, especially South Florida, sets a shining national example,” said Dr. Douglas R. Laurie, President of American Heritage Schools. “When students matriculate to college, there are amazing in-state choices.... Florida will continue to be innovative and progressive without political or social agendas, and strive towards continuing to focus on pure academic achievements.

Funding Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs Today

WHEN KEITH TRIBBLE

from California several years ago, he was eager to find a career. But many of the jobs he found were lower-wage positions he couldn’t build his future around.

So he turned to CareerSource Palm Beach County. Working together, he found both training for a high-paying job—and support for a new business venture.

Raynisha Perry from the Re-entry program referred Keith to Stacy Hayden, who at the time was a Career Consultant. Tribble was determined eligible, and was enrolled into a grant that covered the cost of CDL (commercial driver’s license) Class A training. He earned his CDL to compete in the South Florida’s fast-growing logistics sector. After successfully completing four weeks of training, Tribble found a job as a truck driver with a local metals distributor.

Tribble and 11 others in his cohort were given stipends on a prepaid card to cover ongoing costs. With budget estimates from his business plan in hand, Hayden and Tribble took a trip to Home Depot and local car detailing and pressure washing equipment wholesalers to purchase his supplies, including the pressure washer, water tank, and trailer. His rubber boots and office supplies, such as a printer, were purchased on Amazon.

Enthusiastic about his success, Tribble agreed to be a guest speaker and tell his story at the CAAB (Community Action Advisory Board) Annual Retreat. Someone there soon suggested Tribble apply for the Palm Beach County Entrepreneurial Program of Work (EPOW) Grant. The program selects applicants who are low-income, disabled, or otherwise facing barriers to employment. Tribble was paired with a mentor from the Small Business Development Center at Florida Atlantic University, who provided him with the insights and skills to create and present a business plan. CareerSource also works with mentors from the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE).

The training is designed to prepare entrepreneurs for the realities of the business world, like addressing credit issues or establishing business banking relationships because of a disability, lack of work history, or their return to society.

“The business plan makes sure they’re bankable,” said Stacy Hayden, a grants manager with CareerSource who worked closely with Tribble on his grant application. “This isn’t a handout. This is for people who are serious about entrepreneurship and need funding to start their own business.”

In all, the program paid up to $15,000 for the participant’s equipment; they were not told in advance how much was available, to ensure their estimates were on target.

In November, Tribble launched his automotive detailing company, K-Team Jesus Luxury Auto Detailing and Pressure Cleaning Services. During the day and on weekends, he details individuals’ cars and pressure-washes
