WELCOME TO THE FTI WINTER EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL!
O
On behalf of the Wellington Equestrian Partners and Equestrian Sport Productions, I would like to welcome you to the 32nd annual FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. It is the largest and longest running horse show in the world, and we believe that that the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) is one of the finest equestrian facilities in the world. We have continued our aggressive investment in the PBIEC once again this year, including moving all of the competition rings to the North Grounds, having dedicated horse paths throughout the facility, and updating the footing in all schooling and competition rings. We are excited to award over $6 million in prize money and host the best that equestrian sport has to offer. We welcome both our returning customers and the wave of many new families experiencing Wellington for the first time. On a more somber note, we are saddened by the passing of Eugene Mische, who was a true legend in American show jumping. His vision, passion, and energy converted this one-time “swamp into the world's greatest equestrian environment. We are humbled by his accomplishments and we will miss him greatly. We believe that Wellington is the most amazing equestrian lifestyle destination in the world. Our partnership has become the owner and steward of this great equestrian facility and in Gene's honor and legacy, we will continue to expand his dream. We are very excited about this year's FTI Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments. It is our target to raise $1 million this year. 100% of what is raised will be distributed to 30 Palm Beach County charities. Our thanks to over thirty equestrian families that will donate $25,000 per team to make this an incredible event. We encourage you to support this charity with a barn, trainer, or family sponsorship
donation. We believe that in these difficult economic times, it is even more imperative to convey a spirit of philanthropy. We are confident that this event will evolve into our greatest legacy as a partnership. We owe great thanks to our title sponsor, FTI Consulting, and Dennis Shaughnessy for their amazing support once again this year at the FTI WEF. G&C Farm, owned by Gustavo and Carolina Mirabal, have stepped up their sponsorship in 2011 to sponsor the CSIO week and have increased the number of FEI ROLEX ranking classes for our top show jumpers. Again, our thanks. Thank you to all of our sponsors who make the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival possible, and to the riders, trainers, and owners whose passion and commitment to the sport make it all worthwhile. Thanks also go to our staff, whose tireless commitments before, during, and after the circuit make this one of the most unique experiences in the industry. While the last three years have been a challenge in improving the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, we truly believe that we've created a special place that will produce lasting memories for all of our families for decades to come.
Sincerely,
Mark Bellissimo CEO, Equestrian Sport Productions

WINNING PARTNERSHIPS: From Global to Local, Title Sponsor Navigates the New Course
I
by Heather Buchanan
In turbulent times, many would like to get their information straight from the horse’s mouth. Even the highest authorities would value a crystal ball with no fog delays. Yet short of a Back To The Future ride, people have to rely on skilled advisors to help them navigate an uncertain future. As a global business advisory firm, FTI Consulting presents its strong suit, “Critical thinking at the critical time.” Returning as the title sponsor of the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival for 2011, FTI Chairman Dennis Shaughnessy gives his global impressions. “I think there’s confusion, which is probably worse than optimism or pessimism. America is learning the hard way that no longer are we the stirrer that stirs the drink for the whole world. It’s a tribute to the equestrian industry that it has held up so well in the last two and a half years of hard times, and there still appears to be a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for the sport.” In a teeter totter of ups and downs, Shaughnessy notes the steady upward curve for FTI WEF, “Every year they improve the facilities, the organization, and the hospitality. We’re looking forward to enjoying the improvements made in the off season.” This year FTI continues the $500,000 FTI Consulting Finale Grand Prix, one of the top purses offered in show jumping, as well as the $100,000 FTI Rider Challenge, where riders earn points over the season with grand prix wins, heightening the excitement to see who will emerge on top. “We started out sponsoring lower level divisions as a family because my wife and my daughter were competing,” says Shaughnessy. “Then we were looking to do something different. People like to keep score and like the idea that there is a cumulative effect to doing well. We had a great response from the riders for the FTI Rider Challenge.” As a global company which sponsors golfer Padraig Harrington as he competes all over the world (recently China, Singapore, and soon Dubai) as well as sponsoring The Most Valuable Player Award for the professional cricket league in the United Kingdom, FTI Consulting also finds that its international client base is often right here in Wellington. “We have clients from South America who own horses through their professional riders or through their families competing here,” notes Shaughnessy. “Some of the corporate sponsors of the European riders are clients of ours, and we saw their horses and riders here as well.”
For FTI their sponsorship is all about targeted impressions. “The people who we’re trying to market to sit on boards of companies or complex businesses,” says Shaughnessy. “Others are advisers or intermediaries like bankers or lawyers or even investors — it could be hedge funds or private equity firms. This is a venue physically, and by geography, that attracts a lot of those people. It’s a sport that they either directly or vicariously have an interest in, so it’s a perfect opportunity for impressions of the brand and then the opportunity to see them on a networking basis. At the end of the year we have a big gathering which is attended by a lot of our clients here.” Shaughnessy notes that many of the guests are pleasantly surprised when they arrive at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center for the first time. “It’s one of the most satisfying elements of the sponsorship,” he says. “Not only are we creating a potential client relationship, but we’re introducing them to a sport they may have seen only on television. Even people from Palm Beach Island say, ‘Wow I had no idea this was so gorgeous and so complex and so much fun.’” The addition of the night classes and Saturday Night Lights entertainment experience makes it even more of a social destination he adds. FTI also stepped up to the plate last year to be the title sponsor of the first annual Great Charity Challenge, where teams of professionals and amateur riders competed for different charities, an inaugural event which raised $560,000. Says Shaughnessy, “It was a great night. The participants had a good time, and the sponsors got a lot of enjoyment as well, knowing their donations went to worthy causes in the local community.” FTI looks forward to participating in the 2011 event which promises to be even bigger and better. Shaughnessy ultimately expresses appreciation for the show’s owners and organizers, the Wellington Equestrian Partners and Equestrian Sport Productions, people who put their money where their horse’s mouth is. Shaughnessy says, “The owners here have walked the walk as much as they’ve talked the talk. They’ve put up their capital and have invested heavily in making this a world-class facility not only cosmetically, but for the benefit and safety of horse and rider.” He sums up, “At FTI we’re very impressed with what they’ve done in the past three years, and we’re glad to be their partners.” Now that is straight from the horse’s mouth.

THE 2011 FTI WINTER EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL WHY WEF IS UNIQUE
T
The Village of Wellington has become synonymous with World Class Horse Country. What started as a quaint area a few miles from the beach has grown into the premier international equestrian extravaganza. People come from all around the globe to participate in the 12-week span of horse competitions that take place each year at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC). The series of shows, called the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), is produced and managed by Equestrian Sport Productions, LLC and is the largest, longest-running event in horse sports. The PBIEC is over 80 acres, features 12 show rings and corresponding practice areas. Over 3,000 horses are able to compete in these arenas on any given week. Each show starts on Wednesday and concludes on Sunday afternoon. Throughout the week, there are 70 unique divisions for riders of all ages and ability, making WEF the host to the nation's premier competition for children, juniors, adults , amateurs, and professionals. Being at WEF allows one to be amidst aspiring riders, Olympic veterans and everyone in between; an opportunity not often found in one place. The WEF events are sanctioned by the Federation Equestre International (FEI), the international governing body of equestrian sports affiliated with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and by the United States Equestrian Foundation (USEF), the FEI's national counterpart. It is no wonder then, why WEF would be the choice for the FEI World Cup Finals qualifiers and the Olympic Games and World Equestrian Games selection trials. The WEF is also home to the only FEI Nation's Cup competition in the United States with international teams duking it out for the top spot. Spectators are an intregal part of the WEF. Equestrian Sport Productions strives to get the community involved so that there is something for everyone to enjoy. With food vendors from different cultures, the now-famous Tiki Bar and a new Sports Bar complete with flat screen televisions, there truly is a little bit of everything. And of course, there are also specialty

classes that are fun and exciting to watch, like the Battle of the Sexes and the WCHR Hunter Spectacular under the lights. The 2011 FTI Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments速 has a fundraising goal of $1 million. The Great Charity Challenge is a relay style jumping competition that is scheduled to take place on February 19, under the lights in the International Arena. Thirty relay teams will be formed, consisting of two junior/amateur riders and one professional rider. Each equestrian team is assigned a charity to represent, and the charity matched with the winning team will win over $100,000. Thirty Palm Beach County charities were chosen to benefit from the FTI Great Charity Challenge. Running from January 12 - April 3, 2011, over 10,000 exhibitors (horse owners, trainers, riders, support personnel) compete at the WEF. There to capture it all are over 100 reporters, photographers and television camera operators from across the Americas and more than 20 European nations providing detailed coverage of the shows and the unique lifestyle of Wellington to readers and viewers around the world. This showgrounds and surrounding area with over 8,000 acres of horse farms is something hard to imagine and a dream to live in for equestrians and horse lovers in general. From the moment you step onto the WEF grounds, you can feel something special is taking place here. Is it the beautiful, athletic horses and talented riders? The gorgeous rings and obstacles? The curving cobblestone walkways with flowers? The immaculate presence of the property? The wonderful sponsors? Or the intesity of the competition? It is all of these ingredients, and these are only a few that make this event what it is. The 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival is a showcase of the top American and International riders and their horses, a world class series of events that takes place each year in Wellington, Florida masterfully blending the tradition of the sport with the innovation of the times.

THE SPECTATOR'S GUIDE TO EQUESTRIAN COMPETITION Grand Prix Show Jumping
Hunters
The Olympic sport of Grand Prix show jumping is the highest and most challenging level of jumping competition. Men and women compete as equals over a set course of obstacles that can be as tall as 1.60 meters (5.25 feet) in height. The horse and rider combination must complete the specified course in the allotted time allowed, and clear all of the fences without knocking down a pole in order to return for the second round, also known as the “jump-off. The competitor to complete the second round in the shortest amount of time without faulting at any of the obstacles is deemed the winner. Grand Prix show jumping is a true test of athleticism for both horses and riders.
Hunt seat competitions are based upon elegant traditions arising from the foxhunt, where beautifully groomed horses are prized as much for their impeccable manners as their lovely jumping style over natural looking obstacles. Hunters differ from jumpers because they are judged on the style, movement, and technical proficiency of the horse and rider within the constraints of the set course design. Judges give scores based on a combination of these aspects, and the highest possible score is 100. Horses should display jumping ability, manners, style, an even pace, and quality.
34
2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival
Equitation
Equitation competition is offered for junior and amateur riders and is judged based on the style and form of the rider. Horses are not judged in this discipline, but successful riders will ensure that their horses are well behaved. Equitation competitions are judged over both jumper and hunter style courses. Many competitions involve judging the rider based on their performance over a jumping course, as well as their performance on the flat, in which they perform different functions at the walk, trot, and canter.

THE SPECTATOR’S GUIDE TO SHOW JUMPING SCORING Penalties in show jumping competitions can be incurred in a variety of different ways, and are referred to as “faults.” A different number of faults are allotted depending on what types of mistakes are made. Some common ways that riders acquire faults are through knockdowns (knocking down a rail or a pole on a jump), putting a foot in the water jump, refusals (when the horse stops forward motion prior to the next jump), and exceeding the time allowed for jumping a course. In all jumper classes, falls and going offcourse result in elimination. There are many different types of jumper classes (see Glossary of Terminology), and the same scoring applies for all of the classes. If a horse touches the jump or makes a rail move, no penalties are gained, as long as the rail does not fall down. After the sound of the horn or buzzer upon a rider’s entrance to the arena, the rider has 45 seconds to cross the start line. If the rider takes longer than 45 seconds to cross the start timers, the timers start automatically, and the rider has less time to spend jumping the actual course. The finish timers are located directly after the last fence, and they stop the time as soon as the horse crosses them.

IN MEMORIAM:
EUGENE R. MISCHE by Kenneth Kraus
Legendary horseman Eugene “Gene” Mische, the founder of Stadium Jumping, Inc., passed away on Friday, December 3, 2010 following a long, hard fought battle with cancer. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 26, 1931, Mische, more than any horseman in history, changed the face of horse sports in the United States. He was 79 years old. Mische recently celebrated over 60 years in the equestrian industry and over the course of his stellar career managed the most prestigious shows in America including the Budweiser American Invitational, American Grand Prix Association National Jumper Championship, New Albany Classic, Lake Placid and I Love New York Shows, Charlotte Jumper Classic, the American Gold Cup, USEF National Jumper Championships, and the National Horse Show. Other Stadium Jumping Inc. productions included the Olympic Games Show Jumping Team Selection Trials in 2000 and 2004, and the World Equestrian Games Show Jumping Team Selection Trials in 2002 and 2006. Mische’s crowning achievement was the creation of the largest and longest consecutively running sporting event in the world, the Winter Equestrian Festival, still going strong in Wellington, Florida. Mische was instrumental in bringing international caliber sport to this nation. In 1980, Mische was part of the
five-member Organizing Committee that brought the first World Cup Finals to the U.S. In 1989, Mische and Stadium Jumping, Inc. produced the second Volvo World Cup Finals ever held in the U.S., this time hosting it in Tampa. In 2002, Mische produced the first-ever outdoor Nations’ Cup, hosting it at the International Arena in Wellington, Florida. Mische was the founding president of the Wellington Equestrian Alliance and was deeply involved in a host of equestrian related issues that ranged from the creation of the Wellington Equestrian Preserve Area in the Village’s Comprehensive Plan, to ensuring that the Village’s codes and regulations help protect and enhance the equestrian community. Mische was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame in 2000 and was also awarded the Jimmy Williams Lifetime Achievement from the United States Equestrian Federation, an award he was most proud of, “because it was voted on by my peers,” he said. “I hope when they judge me, they look at the overall contributions I’ve made and Stadium Jumping has made to the sport and to the industry,” Mische said. “I think there are so many contributions that we’ve made to the sport over the years. I’d be happy to be remembered for any one of them. I feel that I’ve been blessed to be a part of this great sport and was able to do what I did.”

Elizabeth “Liza Towell Boyd started riding at a very young age with her family at their farm, Finally Farm. She enjoyed many successes as a junior rider in the pony, hunter, and equitation divisions. She has since moved on to a professional status and continued to be a top competitor earning countless wins and many horse of the year titles with her different rides. Liza has been the winner of the prestigious AHJF Hunter Classic Spectacular three times, 1997, 2008, and 2010.
At the age of four, Sandy began riding and after graduating college in 1989 she decided to make horses her lifetime career. She was the 2008 WCHR Professional Champion, the highest honor a professional rider can achieve. She is a seven-time WCHR regional winner from both the Southwest and the mid Atlantic regions. In 2006, Ferrell won the AHJF Hunter Classic Spectacular aboard Late Entry. At the 2008 Devon Horse Show, Sandy rode Bolero to the first year green hunter champion and was the only rider ever to sweep that division in 2004 on Indian Summer. In 2010 Ferrell was the Grand Green Hunter Champion at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show aboard Showman.
Kelley Farmer has been in the horse show business since childhood when she won multiple championships at the largest horse shows in the country in the Pony and Junior ranks. Farmer is now one of the most successful professional hunter riders, and in 2010 was named the Leading Lady Hunter Rider at the Devon Horse Show. Farmer also garnered multiple championships in 2010 at every major horse show, including the Winter Equestrian Festival, Capital Challenge, the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, the Washington International Horse Show, the National Horse Show, and was second in the WCHR Pro Challenge. Farmer also won the prestigious AHJF Hunter Classic Spectacular in 2009.

Peter Pletcher Magnolia, Texas Although he may not remember the first time he rode a horse, there is no way we could forget all the winning Peter Pletcher has done. He is one of the top hunter riders nationally and is also competitive in the jumper ring. In 1990, he won the President’s Cup Grand Prix at the Washington International Horse Show. In 2001, he rode Geste to a record-setting perfect score of 100 at the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show Classic. In 2002, he was the recipient of the Emerson Burr Trophy of the USET’s highest honors and was named the Chronicle of the Horse Professional Rider of the Year. The AHJF’s World Championship Hunter Rider belonged to Peter in 2002, 2004, and 2007.

Louise Serio Kennett Square, Pennsylvania Louise Serio still teaches at the same farm where her mother taught, so you could say riding is in her blood. She is a three-time winner of the International Hunter Futurity and numerous USEF titles. Louise is the founder and former president of the American Hunter Jumper Foundation, and is currently president of Derbydown, Inc, a boarding, training, and show facility. She won the WCHR Professional Challenge Class in 2002, and in 2005 received the Emerson Burr Trophy in recognition of her accomplishments in the hunter show ring. She was the winner of the 2005 AHJF Hunter Classic with Costello, and won the 2010 $50,000 Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival aboard Castlerock.
Scott Stewart Flemington, New Jersey Scott Stewart first fell in love with horses at age 11 when he got his first pony. He is the hunter ring idol that many up and coming riders aspire to become, and has been the Leading Rider at such prestigious horse shows as the Hampton Classic, Devon, Harrisburg, Washington, and the National Horse Show. He has won the WCHR Leading Rider title four times. With a remarkable four championships at the 2005 Devon Horse Show, he rewrote the record books and was also named Leading Rider. In 2007, Scott, along with Peter Pletcher, Louise Serio, and John French was a member of the winning U.S. Team for the World Cup Hunter Challenge in Las Vegas. That same year, he was also named the USEF’s Equestrian of Honor.

IN MANY SPORTS, TEAMWORK is what makes success possible. Show jumping is no different, and it’s the excellent teamwork at G&C Farm that helped them rise to the top of the sport in 2010. G&C Farm, based in Wellington, is owned by Gustavo and Carolina Mirabal, who made the move from Venezuela in 2009. Their string of top grand prix horses is piloted by Venezuelan rider Pablo Barrios, who also bases out of Wellington. G&C Farm has proven instrumental as a sponsor for international level riders in North America. When Spruce Meadows was going to lose its FEI ROLEX ranking classes this summer, they stepped up and added money to the classes to keep the ranking opportunities for riders. In 2011, they have sponsored additional classes at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival and added seven new FEI ROLEX ranking classes to

the schedule. G&C Farm has kindly sponsored the 1.45m Jumper division, which adds five of the additional FEI ROLEX ranking classes, and they are the title sponsor of the CSIO week on March 2-6 and the $50,000 G&C Farm Jumping Derby at The Stadium during week six. The Mirabals reside at their farm near the Winter Equestrian Festival show grounds, where Gustavo, his wife, Carolina, and their 13-year-old daughter Maria Emilia compete every year. Their younger daughters, 3-year-old Victoria Elena and 21month-old Andrea Carolina, are already in love with horses. “When we moved here, one of the most important things for us was to have a life with horses and own a farm,” explains Gustavo. “We really enjoy living in Wellington, and we feel that it is the perfect place to raise our daughters.”

G&C FARM Pablo Barrios and G&C Quick Star 11 with Gustavo Mirabal in just one of their many victory presentations at last year’s FTI Winter Equestrian Festival.
As a young boy in Venezuela, Gustavo Mirabal and Pablo Barrios started riding horses together around the age of ten. They took lessons at the same country club, competed together at shows, and attended the same school. Over the years, they each continued to ride and show. Mirabal attended shows in Arizona and the western United States in the ‘80s. Barrios completed his junior years in Venezuela and represented his country in the Pan American Games at the age of 18. Barrios elected to give up architecture 14 years ago to start his own training facility in Venezuela for high performance riders, and he started traveling to the U.S. with a few horses every year. In 2001, he made the permanent move to the United States with his family. Over the past two years, Barrios has won many grand prix events with an outstanding string of horses. He represented Venezuela at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. When the Mirabals decided to move to the United States, Gustavo knew who he wanted to ride his horses at the top level. With Barrios in the irons, the G&C Farm horses quickly amassed six grand prix wins during the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. The stars of the G&C Farm are: G&C LaGran (top 30 at the World Equestrian Games), G&C Sinatra (made Barrios the only Venezuelan to ever win at the prestigious Spruce Meadows); both horses are also owned by Barrios and he rode them prior to G&C Farm purchasing part ownership. G&C Quick Star 11 (multiple winner at WEF and three-time gold medalist at the Central American and Caribbean Games) and G&C Blanchee Z also compete at the 1.60m level, and there are many up-and-coming young horses. Barrios and the G&C horses made their mark on European soil for the first time this summer, earning consistent ribbons in France and Holland. Barrios took home wins at the Dublin International Horse Show in Ireland as well. He scored a huge win in the $175,000 Nexen Cup Derby at Spruce Meadows this summer. Heading back to Central America, Barrios won three gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico. On U.S. terrain, Barrios received the 2010 $50,000 Hagyard Challenge Series Leading Rider Award for his top placings in grand prix events at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Barrios has been successful in the North American indoor circuit, gaining points in World Cup qualifiers; their main goal is to qualify and compete at the 2011 FEI World Cup Finals in Leipzig. Barrios and G&C Farm accomplished their most important
goal by reaching the top 30 in the FEI ROLEX world rankings in November, and Barrios is now ranked 26th in the world (as of November 30, 2010). It has been an incredible year for Barrios, who started out 10 months ago ranked in the 93rd position. Outside of Brazil, Barrios is currently the only Latin American in the top 100 ranked riders. He has made history for Venezuela as their top ranked rider ever. Barrios is the first rider in history from “Group V” (the FEI geographical area which includes Venezuela) to be ranked in the top 30 in the world. Barrios points out how significant it would be to eventually have an international show jumping team to represent Venezuela. “I think, in the near future, we’re going to have a good team to represent us for international events. Other good riders are moving to the States, and they are looking for the same thing that I am looking for. They moved here for the same reason. They are much younger than me, but at some point, they are going to get the right sponsors and organizations behind them. Everybody is trying to get to a better level. I think we will have a competitive team, not for the 2012 Olympics, but for the next one.” Mirabal feels that G&C Farm’s recent accomplishments were vital for Venezuela. “To hear the Venezuelan national anthem and see the flag raised is a great feeling. It is indicative that we are on the right track,” says Mirabal. “I have a particular goal: that G&C Farm competes in all continents and hopefully wins! I want to see the Venezuelan flag in the top. That is my dream.” He believes the key to G&C Farm’s success is having a strong “escudería,” a term used by Formula One racing teams that explains what it means to have the best combination of support network and overall organization. For G&C Farm, this includes everything from the top horses to excellent riders, veterinarians, grooms, and working students. Additionally, the farm’s family atmosphere adds to the camaraderie and excitement. Both families look forward to weekly Sunday barbecues together during the winter with all of their kids, and they enjoy riding, training, and traveling to shows together. Through G&C Farm’s exemplary team effort, Barrios has become one of the top grand prix riders in the United States and a true contender in international events. G&C Farm is one of the leading farms in the nation with respect to ownership and sponsorship. Barrios and Mirabal have come a long way since their days of riding at their families’ country club. “All of these things add up,” concludes Barrios. “G&C is a team that I’m proud to be a part of. Its the perfect match and the right moment.”

MEET
LILIANE STRANSKY of Step by Step Foundation By Clara Belden How did you first become interested in charity work? I had a whole career of philanthropy in Venezuela. Twenty years ago me and two other friends who were also dreamers wanted all our lives to open an orphanage. We opened one that started with 50 kids, and now we have taken in 250 kids who have been abused, abandoned, and neglected. I moved to America from Venezuela ten years ago, but my other two friends are still there. We have helped more than 10,000 kids. Besides opening the orphanage and Step by Step what other experience have you had with non-profit foundations? When I came to America I felt like something was missing in my life. I felt naked. So, I spent two years with Children’s Home Society. My role was more about going to parties, but I really wanted to be more in-house. Trying to open an orphanage here was too much responsibility, so we decided to found Step by Step for local and international (charities that help) third world countries to help them with their needs. Then we set up an operation in Haiti, and I went to a town in Haiti and fell in love with the place. These kids have to walk three to four hours to go to school, so I said, “Let’s start a school here,” so it would be more accessible for everyone. We’ve been working there for the last three years and we love it.
Liliane Stransky, daughter Daniela Stransky, and Kathy Andersen of Step by Step Foundation
How did you develop such a passion for charity involvement, especially Step by Step? This is going to sound silly, but when I was six years old, I saw a Latin movie about a famous artist, and the main character had an orphanage in the movie in Mexico. I said, “When I grow up and I have money that’s exactly what I want to do!” How does Step by Step plan to use the money won from the 2010 FTI Great Charity Challenge? With the money that we won from the (FTI) Great Charity Challenge we’re going to complete the school. We’re also going to try to make the community more sustainable by starting an agriculture program to help people have food, and if any remains, they will be able to sell their goods or even exchange with others. You’ve been so generous to the other charities from the Great Charity Challenge. What inspired you to share the wealth with them? Why not?! If we can help, why not? Every time we have Photo copyright ManciniPhotos
to do more and more for local charities, especially at this time that the economy is so bad and they are hurting. What are your goals for the Step-by-Step Foundation? My goal is to do as much as I can do around the world. I also would like Step by Step to win another Great Charity Challenge! What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment with Step by Step? Our efforts in Haiti, and making money to complete the school. It was a great idea that Mark Bellissimo came up with for the Great Charity Challenge, and even though they say they’re going to raise a million dollars for 2011, I think they are short on that. People were so excited, and I think it could raise more than two million. How did you get involved in the horse industry? When I was a teenager I started to ride in Venezuela and was very successful. When we moved here ten years ago I used to take my six-year-old daughter for pony rides at a place in Miami, and she loved it. Now I live it through her.

EQUESTRIAN SPORT PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCES A FUNDRAISING GOAL OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS for the 2011 FTI Great Charity Challenge Presented by Fidelity Investments®
By Clara Belden
T
The first annual FTI Great Charity Challenge galloped out of the gates with huge momentum, raising over $560,000 for 24 non-profit charities. The success of the inaugural event inspired Equestrian Sport Productions to set a fundraising goal of $1 million for the 2011 FTI Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments®. The Great Charity Challenge is a relay style jumping competition that is scheduled to take place on February 19, under the lights in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Thirty relay teams will be formed, consisting of two junior/amateur riders and one professional rider. Each equestrian team is assigned a charity to represent, and the charity matched with the winning team will win over $100,000! In 2010, the Step by Step Foundation took home the blue ribbon and $150,000 when they were represented by a team of Christina Kelly, Jennifer Waxman, and Olympian Margie Engle. Liliane Stransky was the generous sponsor of this team of speedsters, and hopes to have a repeat performance for the 2011 competition. The 2011 event will increase the number of charities to benefit from the fundraising efforts. This year, thirty charities, all of which serve Palm Beach County, will receive a portion of the total money raised. A record number of 161 charities serving Palm Beach County applied to be included in the 2011 event. Four charities were pre-selected to compete in the event, and 25 charities from the applicant pool were randomly selected in a drawing during Holiday HorseFest at the Meyer Amphitheater on December 12, 2010. The final remaining bid will be awarded to the charity that sells the most tickets to the FTI Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments between December 15, 2010 and January 22, 2011. The majority of the proceeds raised for the FTI Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments® stems from the kind donations of families and individuals who sponsor rider teams for the Great Charity Challenge. This unique competition allows amateur and junior riders the thrill of a lifetime to compete side by side with Olympic

2011 FTI WINTER EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL Offers New Artisan Farms Young Rider Series The Artisan Farms Young Rider Series is open to riders who have not reached their 25th birthday by December 31, 2011, and who have not competed on a Nations Cup team at a CSIO 3* or higher, in a Grand Prix at CSI 5*, or in a Grand Prix at CSI-W 4* or higher. A maximum of two horses per rider is allowed in the qualifiers. This series offers a new division for riders who are aiming for the international level and will help those in the transition from the junior ranks as well. It is open to riders from all countries, and it promises to be an exciting series for young riders from around the globe. Michael Stone, President of Equestrian Sport Productions, said, “We are pleased to be involved with the EY Cup organization that was started in Europe to develop this age group of riders and is now one of the most important competitions in the world. It gives riders the tremendous opportunity to compete during the World Cup Finals in Leipzig.” A qualifying system for the Artisan Farms Young Rider Series has been developed by Equestrian Sport Productions and will be awarded by Artisan Farms. The young riders competing in the Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix and Team Competition will be ranked by clear rounds, which will encourage better riding and reward consistency. The three highest scoring riders in the Series will earn the opportunity to participate in the EY Cup Finals in Leipzig, Germany during the World Cup Finals in April 2011, representing their respective country. Through the sponsorship, the travel expenses to the EY Cup Finals will be paid for the highest scoring rider of the Artisan Farms Young Rider Series. Carlene Ziegler, who owns Artisan Farms with her husband Andrew, is proud to support this exciting new series. “We wanted to support the FTI Winter

Equestrian Festival and sponsor a meaningful class. It’s an opportunity for young riders to learn and grow. We need to support these riders financially too, for them to be able to go to the types of competitions like the EY Cup,” Ziegler stated. “ I’m looking forward to seeing our junior and young riders competing at a really high level.” The Zieglers’ daughter Caitlin is a top junior jumper rider who competes at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. “We chose to have Wellington as our winter base of operations, and we think it’s the best training ground for her that we can have,” Ziegler said. “We love watching her compete on a team, and this year in the Artisan Farms Young Rider Series will be another great experience.” The first $15,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix will take place in the International Arena on Sunday, February 13, 2011, while the second $15,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix will run under the lights in the International Arena on Thursday, February 24. The final $15,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix will be held on the grass derby field at The Stadium on Sunday, March 20, 2011. The $20,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Team Event will be held in the International Arena on Thursday evening, March 10. Artisan Farms will be the presenting sponsor of the George Morris Excellence in Equitation class on Friday, March 18. There will also be an Artisan Farms Young Rider Clinic Series throughout the FTI WEF, with details to follow soon. Stone noted, “Our Artisan Farms Young Rider Clinic Series will show various aspects of top level competition for the young riders. This is just another part of our commitment to developing the sport.” George H. Morris, the U.S. Show Jumping Chef d’Equipe, stated, “These classes are great for our young show jumpers in America. The opportunity to qualify and attend the EY Cup in Leipzig during the World Cup Final in 2011 is wonderful and one that our up-and-coming show jumpers should strive toward.” Michelle Grubb, the Chef d’Equipe for previous United States Developing Riders tours in Europe, believes that the Artisan Farms Young Rider Series will be a great benefit to young riders in the United States. “It means a great deal for young riders,” she acknowledged. “The North American Junior Young Rider Championship is a really important event for our country. When riders age out of junior classes to amateurs or professional classes, there is such a gap when competing nationally and internationally. This is a great stepping stone for our young riders. This gives them a venue to compete on an equal level with riders at their age and experience level.” “For the future, the series is important because the fact is that young riders in the United States only have one or two chances per year to compete on a team,” she explained. “That is an experience that every rider needs. If they can start early and learn what it’s like to compete on a team level, we’ll get a bigger pool of top experienced riders to choose from. That’s very important for our nation and our sport.” Grubb added, “We owe great thanks to Artisan Farms for their vision in supporting this endeavor, and we really appreciate their support.”

I’m more of a doer by nature,” says Ziegler. “I tend to roll up my sleeves and get involved.” Like his successful Artisan Partners investment firm which he co-founded in 1995 with his wife Carlene, Artisan Farms is the new family venture he’s taken on inspired by his talented 15-year-old daughter Caitlin. Located in Grand Prix Village in Wellington, Artisan Farms is stepping up this year to sponsor an exciting new Young Riders series at the 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. The barn houses not only Caitlin’s mounts but Andy’s as well. “A couple years ago I thought if I started to ride I would develop a greater appreciation for what Caitlin was doing,” explains Ziegler. “I wanted to get on a horse and trail ride but one thing led to another, and now I’m showing, and it’s a lot of fun.” The story began as Caitlin at the age of four began riding at a small barn outside of Milwaukee where their family lives (Caitlin is the youngest of five.) As her talents progressed she outgrew not only the small ponies but the local shows. Carlene and Cait began visiting WEF when she was nine and quickly a few weekends turned into months at a time, and the Zieglers eventually bought their home and Artisan Farms in Wellington where they spend five to six months a year. At the heart of this deal was not only the love of horses but the bond between a father and a daughter.

“Most 50-year-old CEO dads don’t have a lot directly in common with their teenage daughters,” says Ziegler, “Cait and I have a shared riding experience which has kept us really close.” As a dedicated equestrian and academic student, Caitlin keeps up online with many of her studies as well as working with the Equestrian Aid Foundation where she is Co-Chair of the Junior Committee. “From balancing school and riding I’ve really learned discipline,” she says. “I know how to start things and get them done.” She also knows how to bring home the blue ribbon. Her career highlights include being Grand Junior Champion at Syracuse last year and the Maclay Regionals, where she won two years ago and was second last year. Caitlin was also honored with the 2009 Spruce Meadows “Most Consistent Junior Rider” scholarship. This year at FTI WEF she will be competing with her Junior Hunters Winter Place and Fellini, as well as in equitation with Charleston Z with trainer Cookie Beck, and working with Olympic champion Eric Lamaze training her on her Junior Jumpers which include Camara Z, Dollar, and Take Off. Her lucky charm comes from her Dad — his watch. She recalls, “I tried it on at lunch one day and wore it to the show where I won and have worn it ever since.” If Caitlin can turn to her father for luck, he can turn to her for advice. “The unique thing is that it completely reverses the traditional power relationship,” explains Ziegler. “In most things

I’m the expert but in the equestrian sport she’s the expert and I’m the novice. It’s a wonderful dynamic.” Both Zieglers have weathered tough beginnings where Caitlin fell off her first pony 16 times in the first three months, but kept getting back on. Andy had different lessons in humility, namely to be a fifty year old man on a lead line, but he credits the incredible talents and diligence of his trainer Tiffany Foster for his progress. Ziegler says, “Tiffany has an irrepressible positive spirit. It made going through a learning phase that much more enjoyable.” Like Ziegler’s interest in golf, which turned into his buying and revamping the Erin Hills Golf Course in Milwaukee which will now host not only the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship but the 2017 U.S. Open, his involvement in the equestrian sport has led to his and Carlene’s partnership in Wellington Equestrian Partners, which owns ESP and the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. “We got involved as riders, and from the ownership standpoint we did it to support the sport and support FTI WEF and be a small part of what Mark Bellissimo was doing,” says Ziegler. “I don’t think anybody can look at the show today and not say light years of progress have been made.” This year that commitment moves on to the Artisan Farms Young Riders (25 and under) Series with three $15,000 Grand Prix Classes and the $20,000 Young Rider Team competition qualifying for the EY Cup in Leipzig, Germany (see the Artisan Farms Young Rider Series article). Ziegler explains, “We wanted to do something which would
support FTI WEF and personally we also had an interest in doing something that would support and enhance the development of young riders in the sport. Mark and his team were able to identify this as a sponsorship opportunity and create the series. The informal feedback we’re hearing is a lot of excitement from young riders who will compete to qualify to represent their country in an international competition in Europe.” With his investment company vastly integrated in the international and global markets, Andy Ziegler appreciates the importance of those connections for the sport. “If you look at the World Equestrian Games this year, the four finalists were from four different continents,” he comments. “Every year at FTI WEF we’re seeing international attendance and enthusiasm for the horse show. Having sponsors and spectators exposed to the international riders can also only be positive.” As one of the leading young riders, Caitlin gives her personal views on how valuable the experience is for U.S. riders to gain international experience, “I’m excited to see the Young Riders series. It’s important as a show to give us the chance to ride as a team and go to Europe. You learn the skills of working with a team as opposed to competing as an individual.” The big question for this season — will we see father and daughter compete together? Caitlin hopes Andy will join her and gold medalist Eric Lamaze in the FTI Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments this year as the third on their relay team. What does Andy have to say? “Twist my arm.”

Spy Coast Farm Presents
YOUNG SPORTHORSE SHOW SERIES at the 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival By Lauren Fisher
The 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival in cooperation with the North American Studbook will host three Young Horse Shows this year, one each month in January, February, and March. The shows will be held on January 25, February 22, and March 22, all Tuesdays, in the Mogavero Ring at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Spy Coast Farm has generously signed on as the title sponsor of the Series, which will conclude in December 2011 with a Young Horse Final at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. That final will be the culmination of all of the Young Horse Shows this year. The Spy Coast Farm Young Sporthorse Show Series is designed to provide breeders, owners, trainers, and riders of young sporthorses an affordable show venue. The goal of the young horse program is to introduce sporthorses of all disciplines to the show environment and provide special classes suitable to the proper development of young horses. It is also intended to create a sales environment where numerous young horses are in a single location and their talents may be displayed in front of a buying audience. The Spy Coast Farm Young Sporthorse Show Series is for young horses of all disciplines, one to five years of age. Disciplines include jumpers, dressage, hunters, and eventing. NAS Board Member Lisa Lourie hosted a very successful inaugural event at Spy Coast Farm this spring and looks forward to continuing the shows in Wellington this winter. “This whole concept was the idea of NAS President Jean Yves Tola,” Lourie acknowledged. “He approached me about
104

having a show at Spy Coast Farm and he asked if we could pursue this in other settings, which is where WEF came in. We are basically trying to create a template for Young Horse Shows where the standards are quite clearly set so that we are not over-facing these horses. The emphasis is on style and technique more than it is the competition to win. It is the intention of this Young Horse Show to provide young horses a suitable environment to begin their first steps towards a competitive career without the pressures of the show circuit.” The Young Horse Shows will host five divisions, each divided by age. Divisions include Suitability for Sport In-Hand, Jump Chute, Schooling Dressage, Suitability for Sport Under Saddle, and Style of Jumping Under Saddle. Horses can compete in more than one division appropriate to their age group.
Suitability for Sport In-Hand This class will combine an in-hand phase followed by a liberty phase. Upon entering the ring, the conformation of each horse will be assessed by the two judges independently. The handler will then present the horse on the triangle at both the walk and the trot. The conclusion will be a maximum 3-minute liberty phase where all three gaits will be assessed. The horses will be scored on conformation (30%), quality of all three gaits (30%), overall athleticism (30%) and overall impression (10%).
Jump Chute Horses will jump an age appropriate chute comprised of three jumping elements: a cross rail to a small vertical to an

ascending oxer. The judges initially will set the chute at an inviting height so the horse can become accustomed to the chute and will then raise the jumps accordingly. The horses will receive equally weighted scores for scope, technique, carefulness and willingness at the conclusion of their jumping effort.
Schooling Dressage Open to horses of all disciplines, horses will demonstrate their basic rideability, harmony with their rider and willingness to perform using a Training Level Dressage test. The Training Level tests can be performed by any horse and rider pairing of any discipline that is capable of walking, trotting, cantering, and halting. No lateral movements will be required. The judge will look for balanced, smooth transitions and clear, rhythmic gaits. Each element of the test will be scored and collective marks at the end of the test are given for the horse’s gaits, impulsion and submission. Since the focus of the class is the horse, the rider will not receive a score.
Suitability for Sport Under Saddle Open to horses of all disciplines, judges will assess the basic gaits of the horse under saddle. Two horses and riders will be in the ring at once. Horses will be paired by age and by gender and will perform in the ring together with the judge asking the riders to walk, trot, canter and lengthen the gaits. Horses will be scored on the quality of their gaits under saddle, as well as their overall impression. Horses will receive a score for walk (25%), trot (25%), canter (25%) and overall impression (25%).
Each horse will be assessed by a single judge. The scores will be based on the individual horse, not on a relative basis.
Style of Jumping Under Saddle Horses will jump an age appropriate course of eight to ten fences to demonstrate their jumping skill. They will be allowed two rounds over the same course and fences. The focus of the judge will be on the horse’s style (e.g., scope, technique, carefulness and willingness) over each obstacle. The course will be designed similarly to a hunter course in structure (basic in and out lines, no bending lines, no roll-backs), but comprised of colored (jumper) fences set with young-horse friendly, straightforward strides. Time is neither set nor judged. The horse will be scored over each obstacle and each individual score will then be combined for a total score. The North American Studbook (NAS) was established with a single purpose of assisting the North American sporthorse breeder to better compete in the domestic and international marketplace. It was created by a small group of seasoned breeders and professionals who have a keen insight into the hurdles facing North American breeders, coupled with a strong understanding of the European means to achievement. In order to continue to educate other equestrians about the management of breeding and young horses, Spy Coast Farm will host a seminar on the Economics of Breeding on Thursday, February 10, from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. as part of the FTI WEF’s Lunch and Learn series. They will also host a clinic in the Mogavero Arena on Tuesday, February 16, with the topic of How to Back a Young Horse.

MEET THE WINNER OF THE 2011 FTI WINTER EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL ARTIST CONTEST,
Julie Chapman By Clara Belden
“Morning Colors,” oil on Canvas, by artist Julie Chapman
As soon as the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) came to a close, Equestrian Sport Productions (ESP) held a contest in search of an artist to create the cover of the official souvenir program guide for the 2011 WEF. After receiving a record number of entries, and reviewing numerous pieces of outstanding artwork, the panel came to a unanimous decision. Equestrian Sport Productions is delighted to introduce the 2011 artist contest winner, Julie Chapman. Chapman, of Missoula, MT, began her artistic endeavors when she was a child, and has always been enthralled with horses. “I’ve been drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil- and it was horses that I drew first and always, as I’ve had a love affair with all things equine my entire life,” Chapman noted. After spending time as a child on her family’s farm in Ohio, Julie developed a love for all things animal related. “For me, it’s all about the animals- their behavior, form, and beauty are fascinating,” Chapman expressed. Chapman’s love for nature combined with her acquisition of the $50,000 Grand Prize in the International “Arts for the Park” contest in 2002 persuaded her to move to Montana and become a full-time artist, where she now has access to the most exhilarating wildlife hot spots right at her fingertips. In addition, the small-town summertime rodeos in Montana have given her a wonderful new equine subject matter full of color and action. Chapman has been juried or invited into a number of national and international art and museum exhibitions, including Birds in Art, the CM Russel auction, Oil Painters of
America, the American Academy of Equine Art, and the Western Visions show at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Her animal paintings are represented in a number of museum and public collections, and her work hangs in many private collections in the U.S. and internationally. She was recently recognized as a State of Montana Treasured Artist, and her work is represented in galleries throughout the west. Chapman’s beautiful use of oils and portrayal of colors eventually won the panel’s vote. These skills earned Chapman several prizes, including $500 in prize money, a complimentary 10’x10’ vendor space for two weeks during the 2011 FTI WEF, an eblast announcing the winner to over 10,000 people, a featured article in the 2011 FTI WEF program guide, and a one week art show in the foyer of the International Club at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Chapman’s, “Head in the Clouds,” was especially designed for the 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, and can be found on the cover of the official souvenir program guide, poster, t-shirt, and more. “I’m delighted!” Chapman exclaimed of her success in the competition. Chapman has competed in both dressage and three-day eventing, and is excited to be a part of the 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. Chapman’s current studio commitments are keeping her very busy, but she hopes to find time to visit the WEF to consult with potential collectors on commissions or other aspects of her artwork. To find out when she will be available at the event, please contact her at 406.626.4586 or julie@JulieTChapman.com. To view more artwork by Julie Chapman, please visit www.JulieTChapman.com.

TAKING EQUINE SPORTS THERAPY TO A NEW LEVEL The Sanctuary Opens at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center By Heather Buchanan
While they don’t promise miracles, the Sanctuary Equine Sports Condition and Performance Center based in Ocala has been a part of some miraculous recoveries, seeing a mare whose injury was so severe she was going to be put down in the show ring return after treatment to compete again. Now this world-class facility will be on-site at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC), offering 2011 FTI WEF participants and South Florida equestrians direct access to their services. And while visions of a horse spa may come to mind, Brenda McDuffee, general manager of The Sanctuary, explains it’s serious business. “Spa takes away from the technology and staff training. It’s not pampering. If you’ve ever been to rehab,” she says from experience, “you know it’s not your favorite part of the day.” Luckily, injury prevention is an equally important goal. The Sanctuary’s on-site facility near the FEI Stabling Area will feature state of the art equipment: two water treadmills, two cold salt water leg spas, two vibration plates with solarium, laser therapy, electromagnetic pulse therapy, and a respiratory machine. As well as full-service, there is also “takeout” care, a mobile unit which can travel to barns on the show grounds or the surrounding farms. While they service all different sport horses, they will cater to hunter and jumper athlete’s specific needs. “Any horse can get a wound,” says McDuffee, “but with show horses we tend to see a lot of soft tissue injuries like a tendon. Those injuries we usually address with our cold salt water leg spas and laser combinations.” As opposed to the thoroughbred race horse industry which is dominated by two year olds, show horses start their careers later and can peak at eleven or twelve years old, where owners have both a personal and a financial investment. Brenda notes, “If a grand prix horse can’t jump at Photos courtesy of Equine Chronicle
that level, you’re out. You don’t have another 20 (horses) to pull out of the stable. It takes years of training and investment. If the horse is only healed 85%, it can’t compete at that level.” “Horses are just like people,” she adds, “Kids heal and bounce back quickly and are more flexible. As horses get older we’re looking to be preventative and not let a tiny weakness develop. We’ll think proactively before it becomes a major issue. A lot of what we offer can be used in your conditioning and training program.” The Sanctuary will have an open “barn door” policy where owners, trainers, and exhibitors can come to consult with them. McDuffee is quick to add, however, that they do not take the place of the veterinarian. “We’re set up like sports therapy,” she says. “It’s the doctor’s job to diagnose and prescribe therapy.” In some cases, depending on the medical policy, equine insurance may also cover some of the cost of treatment. Like athletes who are at the peak of their game, top show horses also have a psychological component to their training. “After a while everyone’s job can become dull,” explains Brenda. “Horses can get bored or sour with the same exercise, so if you can find a way to keep the muscles tuned, that’s fun. It keeps them mentally brighter and happy to do their job.” The water treadmill offers the horses a way to exercise with less concussion and full range of motion in their joints which is especially helpful after an injury. Brenda notes, “Horses gets used to a limp even after it’s healed. They’ve lost strength in that limb and it gets tired first. The limp is the new normal. But if you put them in a water treadmill it’s not an option to take a short stride. It balances them left to right and front to back and puts them in same frame when we go back to working them.” McDuffee expresses The Sanctuary’s excitement to be involved at FTI WEF and the PBIEC. “It’s exciting to be in the thick of something top-notch,” she says, “I think it’s going to be win/win, great for them and great for us.”

SEE THE SPORT’S RISING STARS at the College Preparatory Invitational! By Elise DeVoe
T
The inaugural College Preparatory Invitational Horse Show (CPI) will be held January 14-15, 2011, at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). Equestrian Sport Productions (ESP), joined forces with the CPI to host the unique event, aimed at both young college-bound equestrians and their families. Katherine Bellissimo, one of the founding partners of Wellington Equestrian Partners, explains that events such as the CPI offer a definite path to college for young equestrians. “The FTI Winter Equestrian Festival is proud to host the inaugural College Preparatory Invitational Horse Show to encourage the connection of young equestrians to their bright, horse-filled futures in higher education,” Bellissimo said. She added, “We want to help the families that make so many sacrifices for their kids to ride at any level to know that there is a path to college and opportunities to connect with these colleges.” Jeanne Rouca-Conesa, Co-Founder and Partner of the CPI, stated, “I cannot tell you how proud we are to have partnered with the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival as the venue
118
2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival
for our inaugural College Preparatory Invitational Horse Show. Together we will expose many of the riders who compete at the WEF, and their families, to collegiate riding and the colleges and universities that have equestrian programs.” “In addition, we will be able to provide a unique opportunity for riders who may not have the means to compete at WEF, by allowing them to compete and learn at the epicenter of winter equestrian competition and one of the nation’s top facilities,” Rouca-Conesa went on to say. “The CPI will provide junior riders with resources, including scholarships and seminars, to help them create their future collegiate equestrian experience.” The CPI’s mission is to prepare and educate student-riders about the format of college equestrian competition, to encourage academic horsemanship, and to provide the riders with the resources to create their desired future equestrian experience. The invitational is intended to introduce young equestrians from grades 6-12 to the college-format competition as well as highlight participating colleges and universities. Last year there was $40 million available for equestrian scholarships, so the CPI would like to let students know that the opportunity for education with equestrian sport is available.

With competition based on the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) classifications, the invitational will also include seminars and Q&A sessions for riders and families alike. One of the main goals of the CPI is to foster relationships between young riders, their families, and collegiate coaches and recruiters. On Saturday, January 15, the competitors are expected to come dressed in their show clothes with their helmet, crop, and spurs in-hand. The riders will select their horses during a “live draw” at 8:15 a.m. and the show will begin promptly at 9:30. The CPI is intended to showcase riders of all levels because the IHSA and NCAA collegiate teams need riders to compete in divisions from walk-trot to the 3’6” open level. Run as a formal invitational, the CPI is accepting only 100 entries on a first-come, first-serve basis. The application deadline is December 3, 2010. In total, there will be four scholarships awarded to eligible CPI participants: CPI Horsemanship Test Award, CPI Highest Point Rider, CPI Essay Contest, and CPI Champion of Service Award. There is an entry deadline of December 3,
2010, for the Horsemanship Test Award as well as the essay contest. The Champion of Service Award’s entry deadline is December 17, 2010. “The CPI is supporting the idea of the complete horseman by offering scholarships for the high scorers on the horsemanship test, the essay, and the riding portions of the event,” says Shelby French, director of riding at Sweet Briar College. French explained that because of the support of ESP, the FTI WEF, and other sponsors, the CPI is able to provide an opportunity for riders who may not have the means to compete at the prestigious FTI WEF winter circuit and to experience showing at a top facility. “The CPI will also expose many of the riders who regularly compete at WEF and their families to collegiate riding and the colleges and universities that have collegiate riding programs,” she said. You can visit the CPI horse show’s website at www.collegeprepinvitational.com for more information about the event, venue, scholarships and much more.

THE 2010 FTI WINTER EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL YEARBOOK IS HERE! By Clara Belden
A
Are you in the book? For the first time ever, Equestrian Sport Productions has teamed up with photographer Jack Mancini, of ManciniPhotos, to create a photographic coffee table book that captures the spirit of the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in all its glory. Exhibitors, owners, and trainers often do not have time during the FTI WEF to step back and absorb all of the activities that take place around them, and the FTI WEF Yearbook brings all of the action from the 2010 circuit back to life, with each flip of a page. The 2010 FTI WEF Yearbook documents the entire 2010 circuit on a week-by-week basis. Each chapter, which is arranged by the competition week, includes a recap of the week’s competition, as well as a list of the champions and reserve champions of every division that competed throughout the week. One section of the FTI WEF Yearbook even catalogs all of the 2010 overall circuit champions, and their runners up. “Horses are a passion of mine, and to work closely with them and the great people in this industry is incredible. I am honored to have the opportunity to provide a lasting memory of the biggest equestrian event in the world,” Mancini said. In order to represent the true magnitude of WEF, Mancini included shots of every division that took place over the 2010 season- from the lead line to the Grand Prix, and everything in between. Everybody knows that an important part of the FTI WEF is the social scene, and Mancini was able to display the enjoyment from many parties and fundraisers that took place throughout the 12 weeks of the season as well. “When Jack came to me about the project I said of course!” said Katherine Bellissimo. “As the festival grows in stature internationally, an annual yearbook showcasing the 12 weeks at WEF seems like something visitors and riders alike would love to see. I hope the Yearbook will become an annual collector’s item – like the L’Annee Hippique – high quality, glossy photos, behind the scenes, the big name stars, and the crowds. We hope to capture the excitement of the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival.” The FTI WEF Yearbook is sure to become a collector’s item, and makes a great gift for equestrians and non-equestrians alike. The FTI WEF Yearbook gives everyone an insight to the

GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY Equitation
FEI World Cup
A section of competition that is offered for junior riders, and is judged based on the style and form of the rider, not the horse. The rider must demonstrate sufficient management of the horse to perform the required tests, either over fences or on the flat, in a smooth, controlled, and accurate manner. While horses are not judged in this discipline, successful riders will ensure that their horses are well behaved.
An annual competition governed by the FEI in which the top riders in the world meet in a different location each year to determine the reigning world champion. The FTI WEF holds two qualifying events for the FEI World Cup Finals throughout the season.
Fault A penalty acquired in a jumper class for mistakes such as knockdowns, refusals, and exceeding the time allowed.
Gaits The different paces at which a horse travels. For example, the walk, trot, canter, and gallop are all different gaits. Each gait varies in speed.

Jumper Divisions The classes in which jumper competition takes place. They are usually divided by height, age, and ownership specifications. The FTI WEF offers the following jumper divisions to competitors: Schooling, Pony, Children’s, Junior, AdultAmateur, Amateur-Owner, 1.30m, 1.35m, 1.30m, 1.45m, Young Jumpers, and Grand Prix Levels. The schooling jumper divisions are normally used as a training session for the horse and rider. All riders are allowed to compete in the schooling jumper division. Pony, Children’s, and Junior Jumpers are all separated by the height of the jump, the largest being the Junior Jumpers, and the smallest being the
Pony Jumper division. Horses compete in the Children’s and Junior Jumper divisions, whereas ponies compete in the Pony Jumper divisions. Riders in these three divisions must be under 18 years of age. Riders in the Amateur-Owner jumper divisions must be nonprofessionals over the age of 17, and must own the horse on which they compete. Riders in the Adult-Amateur jumper division must be non-professionals over the age of 17, but do not have to own the horse on which they compete. Young jumpers are restricted to the horses’ respective age groups, and are divided by 5 year olds, 6 year olds, 7 year olds, and 8 year olds.

GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY are verticals and oxers. A vertical is a jump that is constructed of straight up and down rails, and has no significant width. An oxer is a single jump composed of two or three elements to produce a spread (see more details in glossary). The degree of difficulty of a jump is determined by its height, width, construction, and its placement in relation to other jumps on the course. A variety of jumps can be used in competitions, including walls, panels, gates, oxers, water jumps, combinations, banks, hedges, and ditches. Jumps are brightly colored both for aesthetics and to add difficulty to the course. Some course designers believe the colors and patterns painted on the obstacles affect the way that horses approach the jump. The type of construction of a particular jump also determines its difficulty. A jump composed of only a few rails, for example, appears more airy and is more difficult for a horse to negotiate than a solid looking fence.
Jump-Off The round of competition for which a horse must qualify by completing a “clean” first round. It is a shortened course in which the fastest rider to complete the course is named the winner of the entire class.
Junior Any rider who has not reached his or her 18th birthday by December 1st of the current year.
Knockdown Dislodging a rail or pole out of the cups of the jump, causing it to fall to the ground. Each knockdown is worth 4 faults.
Off Course Jumping the jumps out of the designated order determined by the course designer.

GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY Open Jumpers
Power and Speed Class
Advanced jumper divisions in which competitors are not restricted by previous winnings.
Also known as a “Table II(c)” class. Competitors jump through the first set of jumps, and if they go clean, they proceed immediately through a set of timers to the speed portion of the course without stopping.
Oxer A type of jump used in show jumping competition. It is a single jump composed of two or three elements to produce a spread. A “square” oxer is one in which the front and back rails are of equal height, making it more difficult to jump. Types of oxers include parallel, ascending, triple bar, and Swedish. A triple bar is composed of three fences, which a horse must clear in one leap. This tests the horse’s ability to jump both height and width.
Perfect Course (PC) A course in which the number of riders that qualify for the jump-off is the same as the number of ribbons offered.
158
2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival
Rail The wooden bar used on a jump. Rails must be a minimum of four inches in diameter and six feet in length, and usually measure about 14 feet long. A rail is also referred to as a “pole.”
Refusal When a horse stops its forward motion prior to jumping the next obstacle on the set track. A refusal is worth 4 faults in jumper divisions, and two refusals results in elimination from a jumper class.

and the bridle are the staples, while other equipment may be added when necessary. Additional equipment a rider may choose to put on their horse may be a martingale, which attaches to the saddle and bridle to prevent the horse’s head from rising too high. Horses may also wear boots or bandages on their legs for support or protection.

Also known as a “Table II” class. Vertical A vertical is a jump that is straight up and down, and has no significant width.
Voluntary Withdrawal When a rider makes a decision not to continue on the course and leaves the ring. Generally this is done with a nod of the rider’s head or tip of the hat to the judge. A rider may decide to withdraw for any number of reasons such as a problem with the horse or equipment, trouble negotiating the course, or because the rider knows he or she has too many faults to place in the ribbons.

GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY Walking the Course Riders and horses may not practice on a course prior to actual competition, but they are permitted to walk out the route, pacing off the number of strides between jumps and examining the obstacles closely. It is a course designer’s job to set up problems that will challenge the ability of competitors. Riders and trainers must determine what and where these are in a course, and develop their strategies accordingly.
Water Jump Another type of spread that can stretch 12 to 14 feet. There is usually no significant height to the water jump, and looks similar to a miniature pool of water. The lathe, or tape marker, on the landing side of the water jump designates the end of the fence, and if the horse touches the water or the tape marker, it is counted as four faults.
