Our mission is to lead like Jesus did: to demonstrate God’s love for people while helping them change the way they live, love and lead.

Insights about Leadership I Learned from a Bunch of Creatives My vocational call is a pastor. But I also write books. I’ve written six with a seventh coming this fall (intersects Jesus’ teaching principles with the neuroscience of teaching). To improve my writing, a few years ago was a part of a coaching group led by a really smart book marketer, Chad Cannon. I also attended an intense 1-day session on book marketing he led several years ago. It was an amazing day I spent with him and eight bright and talented creatives. Our focus was not on leadership. Nevertheless, I came away not only with a head full of ideas on book marketing but a few insights on leadership as well.

Nonprofits Are Messy, the Podcast

ABOUT NONPROFITS ARE MESSY Nonprofits Are Messy is an interview-style leadership podcast that answers the most pressing questions faced by nonprofit leaders around the world. We do that by finding people, whether in the nonprofit or corporate world, who are uniquely suited to answer these questions. Our guests run the gamut from five-star business authors (Jim Collins) to sector leaders (CEO, Walton Family Foundation) to thought leaders (Adam Grant), to my wife (“Confessions of a Terrible Board Member”). The majority of our listeners are the heroic leaders in our society who commit themselves to public service - executive directors, senior staff, heads of school, development professionals, board leaders, and many more who provide service to the nonprofit sector. Our goal is simple. We aim to find just the right expert to answer the questions on the minds of our listeners. And in so doing, we offer a conversational forum that will inform, entertain and inspire.

How to Grow Church Attendance

A Look at the Numbers It’s no secret that that number of people who go to church isn’t on the rise. If you’re a pastor or church leaders, you may have noticed a decline in your community. You’re not alone. A 2018 survey from Statista found that only 22% of Americans go to church every week. Even more surprising, 28% say they never go. If you’re already offering inspiring sermon series, quality youth and children’s ministries, and exciting volunteer opportunities, you probably find yourself wondering where you’re missing the mark. Before you start doubting your services, it’s helpful to ask yourself two questions. (Don’t worry, we’ll give you the answers, too.) Why Do People Attend Church in the First Place? The experts at Pew Research Center asked over 4,000 Americans. The main reason people regularly go to church, or another house of worship is to feel closer to God. 81% of the people said this reason is very import in regard to their attendance. Other leading reasons for going to church include: to provide children with a moral foundation to become a better person to find comfort in times of trouble Why Don’t People Attend Church? The majority of survey respondents said they skip church because they practice their faith in other ways. The survey also found that 12% stated not having the time as the most important reason they don’t attend. Others said they don’t feel welcome, or they haven’t found a church or house of worship that they like.
