“the cleanest line is how we aspire to mark our passage and presence on the waters that hold our dreams.” it’s a term originally used by climbers and surfers to describe the perfect route on rock or wave faces. But for us anglers, water people and yes, manufacturers, it means much more. the cleanest line is how we aspire to mark our passage and presence on the waters that hold our dreams. it’s a design ethic for us as well, a guiding principle to create the most streamlined, efficient and comfortable fishing gear out there. While others have been caught up in a frenzy of more zippers, pockets and doodads, we strive for less. less weight. less hassle. less line-snagging add-ons. With everything we make, our goal is to carve away the unnecessary and sharpen the utility of what’s needed. it’s another way of saying what we’ve believed all along: great gear disappears. But don’t mistake simplicity and minimalism for the easy road. the less-is-more philosophy, done well, requires serious work. it means not settling for available textiles but inventing proprietary fabrics that reach new levels of water-resistance, breathability, durability, sun protection and environmental friendliness. it means thousands of hours of research and testing. Countless trips back to the drawing board. all before we’re ready to put our name on a single product. the rewards of this arduous path, however, are many: Waders that allow “relief” without having to remove your jacket or fight a balky zipper. vests so intuitively designed that the tippet you need is at your fingertips without having to take your eyes off the fish. a shirt that blocks searing equatorial sun and actually cools the body in sticky, tropical heat. the cleanest line is also a way of doing business and, beyond that, how we see our place in the world. it means leaving as light a footprint as possible, and doing what’s right simply because, well, it’s right. it means providing the finest customer service in the business, investing in new recycled and recyclable materials (today, 87 percent of our fishing products are made with recycled materials and nearly half are recyclable – with more on the way), maintaining a deep financial commitment to fish conservation and a promise to constantly evaluate our actions and strive for improvement. the cleanest line, then, is many things. But most of all, it’s how we like to experience our time on the water – waist deep, treading lightly and looking to the horizon.

predator or prey by jeff currier the ramganga was the clearest it had been since we arrived. i could see the bottom, six feet down. i stalked cautiously upstream, staying 50 feet from the river’s edge. i was on the hunt for a mahseer. Creeping upstream i saw an enormous gold shape. trembling with excitement, i belly-crawled into position and presented my fly down and across current. When my sculpin pattern landed, the fish eased from its lie then surged to devour what it thought was lunch. i was fly fishing in northern india for himalayan golden mahseer, one of the world’s most challenging fish. you don’t just fly fish for mahseers, you have to hunt them. i was on a rarely fished beat bordering Corbett national park, home to leopards and tigers and bears – literally – and boars, and pythons, and crocodiles … after a tippet-stressing headshake on the surface, the fish bolted downstream. the fight was on. my heart dropped as the fish sawed my tippet against a rock, but i managed to lift its head away from the danger. fifteen minutes later, and with little fight left, i led the himalayan monster to shore. i dropped my rod and corralled the golden giant. it was 47 inches and topped my Boga at 27 pounds. it was soon time to leave, and being in a rush to get out of the park before dark, i chose an elephant trail straight through the jungle rather than hike along the winding ramganga. shortly into the trek, my instincts sounded an alarm. in the jungle, the hunch of a threat can’t be taken lightly. Well ahead of alum, my local guide, i stood alone on the trail surrounded by thick undercover. i waited for something to attack; maybe a snake as the area crawls with cobras and pythons, some as long as 18 feet. i stood perfectly still, praying not to be eaten. nonchalantly, alum appeared behind me. obviously my imagination was overactive. once again, i took off. But soon my apprehension returned. i halted and listened, but the jungle was silent. Could it be an elephant? it seemed logical. i was on an elephant trail. it’s surprising how elusive an animal the size of a small dinosaur can
be. i stopped, stared ahead, and listened. in the jungles of india, the ground is covered with dry leaves; even the tiniest critter makes enough noise to send a warning. But the jungle was silent, and again, relaxed as could be, alum appeared behind me. reluctantly, i pushed forward. soon the beauty of the hike distracted my uneasiness. then an external alarm went off: a herd of barking deer. i strained to see them. instead, 40 feet ahead and slightly above, hidden behind some bright green leaves, i spotted an eye looking right at me. it was the spookiest thing i've ever seen. and it was directly above my path. looking harder, i spotted the other eye, and out of the leaves i made out a tiger’s head the size of a beach ball. my eyes continued to uncover the incredibly camouflaged cat. most unfortunate was the position of the tiger: a full crouch, ready to pounce in an instant. i stared helplessly at this tiger that was sure to eat me. after what seemed like a lifetime, the motionless cat shifted its eyes over my shoulder, hearing alum about to arrive. at that second my voice returned: “tiger! tiger! tiger!” shocked and wide-eyed, alum ran to my side in time to see seven feet of the magnificent striped cat turn in disgust and slip into the jungle. lucky for me, i had spoiled another lunch. oil and water by rick bass
We can’t go back. an angler’s life is a braid of memories, casting always forward into hope. But now we have come to a point where nearly all the water behind us has run dry. things are different. no one will soon, if ever, know the bounty we once knew – the world has changed, a once-smoldering world is now in full flames. more than ever we must work to defend fishing, one of the things that most engages our senses and passions, one of the things that makes us more human. i know what it’s like to look for fish – that intoxicating thrill of discovery – and as a former petroleum geologist, i know what it’s like to plumb the various depths of old seas turned now to stone, in search of oil and gas. the two – fish and fossil fuels extraction – simply aren’t compatible, and the old ways, and old paradigms, no longer work. our rivers are growing hotter and shallower, and too often now our fish are diseased and crippled from a warming world still dependent on fossil fuels. We are all complicit, not just texas oil geologists or montana fly fishers, but all of us. We are already waist-deep in a stupendous cascade of collapses, any one of which most of us, including anglers, would agree are more calamitous than whether we’re able to continue fishing. and yet: in protecting a thing we love beyond ourselves, fish – glittering creatures of fantastic perfection, with each scale perfectly balanced against the rigors of evolution – we end up protecting and benefiting all living creatures. the old days as we knew them are gone. those of us who are beneficiaries of enchanted memory from a time before the great diminishment began – and before we were haunted by the foreknowledge of all the consequences of our actions – now possess a duty to defend those waters that nurtured us and gave us those memories. yes, it’s about the fish, and yes, it’s about us; but this duty is obviously about something else too, other than ourselves. anyone who’s ever cast a line has already been blessed. We’re talking about something else now: the dignity of living responsibly, and with accountability for one’s actions, and with the courage to seek to change all the impending extinctions, against lengthening odds.
Where to begin? With the ways that our current policies of energy extraction despoil fish, and all our waters. We can no longer pull fish from american waters and old liquefied or gasified carbon from beneath those waters. sure, we can squeeze our thin seams of streamside coal harder, and suck the fresh water out from between those brittlecake layers; we can mix that clean water with sulfur and dump it then into our streams, in order to power our hopeless, helpless engines and dirty our skies just a little longer. We can mine the fast-thawing permafrost (releasing even more carbon into the air), can build incredibly expensive roads into our still-unprotected wilderness – roads that serve as funnels for slurry and silt into the habitat of bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout. We can dam wild rivers and choke out the ancient sturgeon. We can continue to ship our alaskan oil to russia and China, as we’ve been doing, in fragile vessels that are ultimately no more durable against the increasing traffic of breakaway ice shields than would be ships built of folded-up newspaper. We can carve out the literal guts of alberta to get to the old tar within, fracturing and poisoning underground water-bearing formations – bypassing or poisoning the most valuable thing, water, in order to crack and suck out the very last of the sludgy marrow of our addiction. or we can say, “enough.” We can say, “too much.” as complicit agents in helping create the furnaced breath that now threatens all life, who, if not us, possesses the most authority – the most duty – to lead and affect that change? We won’t be able to get it all back in a day. it will take billions of small steps: increased conservation, aggressive development of renewable energy, and – perhaps most uncomfortable of all for many of us – increased participation in the political process. But we need to act before that ability – like the living water itself – is further compromised, and taken further from us. all species and all systems ultimately come to a bottleneck to which they must adapt, in order to pass through, or be lost. the quickening of the current that takes us to that place is here now. it’s not just about the fish. rick bass is the author of 24 books of fiction and nonfiction, including, most recently, a memoir, Why i Came West. He’s a board member of the Yaak Valley Forest Council and Round River Conservation Studies, and lives in Yaak and Missoula, Montana, with his wife and daughters. He has long been active in the efforts to protect the last roadless areas in the Yaak Valley as designated wilderness.
coal bed methane in the sacred Headwaters royal dutch shell wants to develop a massive 800,000-acre coal bed methane field in the headwaters of three of north america’s great salmon ecosystems: the nass, stikine and skeena in British Columbia. the implications for the salmon that spawn in those rivers could be disastrous. Wyoming’s powder river Basin, where 26,000 coal bed methane wells dot the landscape, has experienced endless problems with water contamination. in rosebud, alberta, landowners can light their tapwater on fire due to the migration of methane into their water wells.
