abstract Itoshima Art Hub is an assimilation of the ideal functions of museum and culture centers to develop a holistic approach that instigate the experience of a distinct environment where art, architecture and culture correlates. In rural regions and villages there still exist natural elements such as mountains, forests and water areas that are jointly managed and utilized by the local community. These regions have sacred and indigenously rich cultural heritage. The cultural patrimony and artistic resources are basic elements of their identity, continuity and development. Though rich in culture and natural surroundings, these areas needs development and special attention to uplift its identity. The preservation of these regions is a target related to sustainability and balanced management of tourism. This project is an art intervention where interaction between local ethnic groups and visitors begin. Through this interactive arrangement, the Art Hub tries to preserve the natural environment of the area and promote urban regeneration.

challenges The conception of traditional museum is becoming outdated and ineffective to entertain the visitors. The role of museums in society is changing. The wide availability of information and media has created a generation of museum visitors that crave sophisticated new experiences and ideas. Once static institutions, museums are reinventing themselves to become more, audience focused, community oriented, flexible, adaptable, and mobile. The challenge lies to remodel the traditional museum towards more interpretive engagement of the visitors. Community spaces play an important role in the development of a city and its inhabitants. They become the foundation for interaction among the locals and those visiting the area. They offer opportunities to embrace the history and culture of the area and bring the community together using this common bond. This project is an exploration of how an art intervention can engage the local community and its visitors to promote social and economic development and reinvent the identity of the community.
13
goals The project focuses on three main goals -Using nature and art as guiding principles, the architectural intervention aims to preserve the rural culture and natural surrounding -Adoption of a holistic approach in building program to create interactive engagement of visitors and locals. -Create a social platform that would serve as city montage to renovate the identity of the area and promote social and economic development.
15
program formulation
To promote interaction and urban re-development of the area, the project tries to combine various users and functions. The main program includes artist in residence, guest rooms, exhibition galleries, workshop areas, restaurant, spa and observation deck. This unique set of the functional spaces would bring an experience of contrast as well as interaction among the visitors as well as the local community.

site location During my visit to Japan, I perceived that art, nature and architecture could be juxtaposed with endless possibilities. Japanese architecture is often a direct response to site context and a feel of nature within the building. One of the main characteristics of Japanese culture is its harmonious and close relationship with nature. This was the main inspiration to select a site in Japan for the project whose main goal was to renew the identity of an area with art and nature as a guiding principle.
itoshima peninsula Itoshima is a city in Fukuoka prefecture in Kyushu area. It is a beach paradise located less than an hour from the center of Fukuoka City - Japan’s sixth largest city. The city has an estimated population of 100,304, with 37,132 households and a population density of 464.11 persons per km². The main population consists of older generation but with the opening of Kyushu University, there is a major shift of younger population in the area. A scenic coastline The most scenic way to Itoshima from Fukuoka is to follow the coastline around the peninsula. The road winds in and out of the bays, with serene views of the ocean and Fukuoka city. The smooth roads, open flats and scenery make the peninsula a cyclist’s paradise. Heading inland away from the coastline, the land rises steeply to mountains over 1,000 meters tall. It is famous for excellent to the top of Raizan, and the Raizansennyoji Taihioin Temple. There numerous smaller hiking trails around the peninsula. Arts and crafts It is good to spend some time in the villages around the peninsula, as many are home to unique arts and crafts shops. Studio Kura in Nijo hosts regular exhibitions alongside painting classes and has an ambitious artists in residence program that draws artists from abroad. Seasonal events During the winter, many of the port towns along the Itoshima Peninsula open kakigoya, temporary oyster huts where one can barbecue a wide variety of seafood including oysters. In the summer, SUNSET music festival is held on Keya beach with beautifully warm waters of the Genkai-nada Sea, bordered on one side by lush green mountains.

itoshima art hub Itoshima Art Hub is a place where people can explore art, nature, architecture, and their own thoughts in a multi-layered and synergistic fashion. The site is mainly divided by the narrow pathways that are the access spines for three main users- visitors, artists and guests with a central open space that acts as a junction for interaction. The building is intended to blend into the natural environment. This is achieved by shaping the slopes of original mountain in a controlled manner to compliment the built spaces underneath and create an interesting dialogue between interior spaces and surroundings. The soil dug out from the construction process would be used to create an architectural landscape. The overall form and built materials creates a harmonious relation of art and architecture with the pristine nature. The project leaves an impression of both stillness and dynamism by its functions and architecture.

While moving in this path, one can enjoy the artistic environment through alternatively placed museum spaces . The galleries have light wells which brings natural light into the built spaces. The galleries lead to the central courtyard which has expansive views of the ocean from the base of the tower that leads to the restaurant and observation deck. The visitors can also interact with the artists and experience how the artwork is made in the live workshop areas . circulation of visitors through galleries, restaurant and wrokshop area.
