MAIN DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS. MOST USED WORDS (MINUS COMMON WORDS).

DETAILED RESPONSES, HOPES, FEAR AND NEEDS Please say what other fears and concerns you would have about this venture and what would not be successful in your opinion, Support of new bands via rehearsal space and live, free gigs in the afternoons. Support of young musicians via afterschool programs, with low or no cost provisions based on income. Don't let Pat Karney anywhere near this project. Focus should be on breadth of music and history in city with stories that are interesting and relevant for all ages e.g. Blues soul train In Chorlton I'm concerned it will be overshadowed by the imagined importance of Oasis or there'll be too much focus on Madchester, and smaller bands/artists or 'scenes' like twee/shoegazing or like Laugh, Edward Barton, The Weeds/Swing etc would be overlooked. Everyone has different ideas of what is important, so have to make sure you cater to as large an audience as possible. Obviously it's important to include certain parts of Mancunian musical history, but there's a risk of only focussing on the obvious That is could become a failure and a joke like the Sheffield National Centre for Popular Music or Urbis. Friends of mine were asked to be consultants in Sheffield and their recommendations were ignored. They were not surprised when it failed. Interestingly, after thirty years creating museums and exhibitions in and around Manchester, this Manchester Music Museum is a ‘new idea’ I’ve heard several times before. As someone whose formative musical youth was 1976 – 1982 I’ve usually concurred with Joe Corré’s comments on burning his Sex Pistols collection: ‘It’s the ideas that are important, not the memorabilia’. However, whether it’s because I’m getting older, or because in an increasingly virtual and remote world the value of the real, the authentic and the first-hand seem to me be to have gained a new importance I’m warming to it. Looking forward to the debate. preset music needs to be as impotant as the heritage we already have preset music needs to be as impotant as the heritage we already have It would promote leftist views. My fear is that the museum will be just a heritage venue for tourists and will be too Conservative looking , forgetting the rebellion of music and will smooth out a lot of the history .I have seen so many versions of Manchesters music history that i almost know what to expect and would like something original We the people that lived/live it will voice any concerns if/when they need voicing. Shyness might be nice but Manchester is no wallflower. With the right people involved it can only be a success. My concern is that it must be the right people. My only concern would be a project like this would need continual funding and Manchester City Council has been approached on numerous occasions to get involved in a permanent venture to highlight the City's musical history. This should be about the history of Manchester music not future music I hope it won't try to be more than it can be, sensibly. Some of the ideas above are great, but unnecessary/expensive. Represent all genres not just indie. Include the likes of I am Gerald & electronic. Also music about or written with links to Manchester like Nick Drake Northern Skies, penned at Manchester Piccadilly ( I think!). Also make sure mix of sexes & ethnicity. Not copying other exhibitions that have recently taken place. Include some of the not so famous artists Just a great idea Get Clint boon and Peter hook onboard xx I'd be worried that it would be dominated by the Stone Roses and Oasis - whilst they are great bands there's a lot more to Manchester music than just them. I'm from the other side of the pennies but still a northerner and very proud of the Norths achievements in independent and popular music.. would love to bring my daughter to this venue (the one at Sheffield was a bit crap and that's why it failed) Think it needs input from the people in the know - people like Craig Gill was, he had proper passion for the history & music it needs people whose interests are predominently artistic not corperate! not a fear but should have volunteers who are passionate about music there I'd volunteer. It may focus too much on certain as poo sects such as Factory, which always seem to get prominence. Also it is important to have people w I th first hand experience where possible. I appreciate it is a good thing to create employment for young people but it is preferable that these people are guided by people with first hand experience. People need to be passionate about Manchester music, if people come aboard to 'make money' rather than for the love it will be a disaster. Could become too corporate. That it would not live up to its title.
13 Too male-focussed as long as it focus's on madchester and not all the wannabe indie bands (courteeners artic monkey etc) it'll be perfect Although I have to agree that big names have to permanent to exhibits as this is what will bring in the customers/fans of the ever growing Manchester Music/Arts field. It should give more to those who also by grit determination and passion were also part of this great history. So exhibits on things like In the City giving space to unsigned bands who put of no fault of their own still played a part in shaping our thirst and enthusiasm.....it's the same with film/theatre etc... giving them some acknowledge ment will at least give people the option to find out about them.... Profit led curatorial ad marketing flair are needed to make it work and attract people: music knowledge can be brought in as needed, including the guides Too much self congratulatory stuff Not capturing the spirit of the city and the moment. To ignore our areas unique way of creating music and art would be a mistake. Very interactive for age specific groups and different abilities The council would interfere is the biggest fear I am most concerned about lack of funding for the ongoing support and maintenance of such a venue and the ability of the venue to generate sufficient footfall. Having lived in Sheffield I saw the National Centre for Popular begin and fail, also the failure of Urbis in Manchester I believe the venue need to have a wide selection of revenue streams to draw from. It would focus too heavily on oasis and the stone roses to pull in the crowds it being to corperate having too much on oasis a very overrated band There's a huge amount that could go wrong with a project of this sort. Location, size, vibe etc. But it's still worth the risk - we need more tourist attractions in the city and this would be a genuine one which could really add value. Take a look at what happened with the National Centre for Popular Music in Sheffield and learn from the mistakes made there so as not to repeat them in Manchester https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Centre_for_Popular_Music I feel it should be housed in an unused building in Manchester bringing it back to life. It needs to be gritty and have sole Cost: entry needs to be affordable to families. That children would not be made to feel welcome. I've found that in general people assume all children only like manufactured pop. The venture must also invest in new talent It is important that no single organisation or person should run away with this project and that it is brought together by the best minds in the city - those people who could add their weight as well as their knowledge - musicians, DJs, respected industry professionals need to work by co-operation. Don't make it like the Beatles Story in Liverpool, gimmicky and cheesy, we have edge. it would need to have permanent and temporary exhibitions to keep it stimulating and a place that people would want to visit. Don't aim to make it like The Beatles story in Liverpool (cheesy), we are known for our edge. Don't aim to make it like The Beatles story in Liverpool (cheesy), we are known for our edge. That it needs to have live acts and music-making opportunities It must promote Manchester music of the day. Music doesn't stand still. too much pop as everyone involved will be from that world and have goldfish memories It needs a cause or a purpose e.g. ending homelessness. Manchester's music has a purpose to it - one that everyone can get behind would give it meaning, zest and longevity. Oh, and funding too. For it to not be arty farty let it be real It would get closed down it it wasn't ensure to be a long term viable investment. Council taking it over and dumbing it down Useless Council taking over It needs plenty of input from people who lived and were involved in the music. Get related established entities on board to pool resources and support. Local libraries, museums, media, BBC, ITV GRANADA ARCHIVES, Orchestra's, education, businesses, hard rock cafe, venues, local authorities, famous mancunians. David x too expensive to run. Also, would be good to have a musieum of popular culture (in general) like Urbis was. Pat Karney involved! Risk of concentrating on one genre and not broad view
14 Prat Karney getting involved Lack of sustainability Go down the 'arty' route. It needs to be accessible for all. We need to show exhibition of different artist on a regular basis. I am concerned that once you've seen it you wouldn't go back because it's all the same. I fear the cost of visiting. It needs to have depth and not just skim the surface-eg there were many other clubs other than the hacienda or twisted wheel; it was these smaller clubs and bands that helped shape the various scenes. That it might be rubbish. Look at what the EMP do in Seattle for inspiration. That place is awesome. it become a gimmick. it should be respectful of our past and inspire the future If it became elitist and too focussed on one genre or subject, Factory, for example. That it became about money and ego not music. I would like to see music from all decade's represented - not just Madchester and Oasis. If like Madam Tussuards! No waxworks please! Little collaboration with local existing venues and gigs; it is very important to encourage visitors to go and explore existing live music in the city. Also, a fear that not enough genres would be represented that it would focus on the already well-known legends but should be broad and deep in scope Admission charge/fee. It should be free to enter. Location of the museum could caus1e a few quarrels!!! Whitworth St area or one of the many bricked up archways was my initial thought. Or why not the Cornerhouse?? Its already built, its part of the history party due to location but also because it lived in the same era. Its a no brainer for me. Lets grab an oportunity to reinvent The Cornerhouse and all that lived with her. rather than delete the soul of yet another building buy turnimg it into fucking apartments.hed into wanker apartments for without a thought could be bland, or cheesy Location of the museum could caus1e a few quarrels!!! Whitworth St area or one of the many bricked up archways was my initial thought. Or why not the Cornerhouse?? Its already.built, waiting, its been there too, etely delete the soul of builsings, neighbourhoods, buildingget demolished or turned into wanker apartments for without a thought Location of the museum could caus1e a few quarrels!!! Whitworth St area or one of the many bricked up archways would be my first thought. Or the Cornerhouse?? Its there already. Whitworth St area or one of the many bricked up archways would be my first thought. Or the Cornerhouse?? Iokay to demolish or sometimes even worse to completely delete the soul of builsings, neighbourhoods, buildingget demolished or turned into wanker apartments for without a thought Location of the museum could cause a few quarrels!!! Whitworth St vacant archway would be my first thought. Tget demolished or turned into wanker apartments for without a thought Location of the museum is goin to be a headf@@k. I would choose and concern has been rumbling around for years.... why has it taken so long. The Hacienda shouldo probs, riduculously long over due Location of the museum is goin to be a headf@@k. Only concern has been rumbling around for years.... why has it taken so long. The Hacienda shouldnt o probs, riduculously long over due Exhibits must be spot in shoice of exhibits are It needs additional services to keep people coming to. Visit again and again A pictorial and written archive would not be enough. Just Madchester era and ignore other history None Sponsorship by big business will lead to anodyne celebration of Manc supergroups Would be concerned about a quango of Promotors controlling the new acts and profitting on the back of the Museums Popularity. Static content. Not suitable to all ages. Not linked to a venue which can continue inspiring and supporting the next generation. If the right people are found the history and the future will be for all to see.My main concern is if the cost rise over a set budget then the likelihood means those who could benefit from it will be priced out of going. For a city with such a rich cultural background this would be the saddest thing in the world. The hardest thing in the world is finding the right people. As well as finding the right guides to usher the viewers through. Location, authenticity Council getting involved! That there would be too great an emphasis on the Madchester/Hacienda period obsession with pop music
15 All decades should be equally represented not just 'Madchester' era music. Would be about just a few bands and be boring central location which is accessible and free entry People without a passion for music being in charge Gotta pick up the general tourists rather than just those interested in music. Central location key... But then again some out of town venues do well if well marketed (iwm) It doesn't cover enough of Manchester's musical past. We need everything from The Hollies to Morrissey and beyond/upcoming eg Horsebeach.
Please write about your dream venue and what you would love to see. What would the Manchester Music History Museum and experience be for you? Celebrate the past - artists, artifacts, venues etc; but act as an incubator and catalyst for future talent. Interactive, teaching (involve post-16 music providers), recording studios... Ideally new building, bold, innovative design, wow factor. Rare memorabilia from the past and current bands; listening station for new and unsigned local bands, with a store to purchase cd's, records, shirts, etc. from those bands, with those bands earning at least 30-40%. Rehearsal space at low or no cost, free performances for new bands to get experience with live audiences. IAN CURTIS CREATIVE CENTRE. Creative lyric lab. How about in the old Hacienda building...oh wait a minute more flats. The rolling stones exhibition in London (saathi) was a good example of a how a music exhibition can be run. Immersive, visual and sonic a true experience with complemented by plenty of historic exhibits. Beatles museum is also well set out. At the same time need to be pragmatic as a white elephant would end this once in a lifetime experience. Could there be a potential for a pop up in the interim. Agree with the idea of keeping the venue alive through inclusion of liv music/studios but again need to think carefully about how this fits within existing music scene. Reiterate the importance of breadth not in terms of trying to spread content to thinly but in acknowledgement of Manchester as a music city is not limited to an era or group. Spatially representing where bands have come from across GM may also be interesting. Link between Music and sport and fashion in the city would also be interesting Maybe a recreation of Brannigans on one floor with a free blue wkd upon entry - people would travel from miles around to see that It should be set up like a timeline as you walk through the venue highlighting as much as possible to date. It should also focus on up and coming new bands to watch out for towards the end of the museum/venue ( The Bright Black) Like the Hacienda exhibition at Urbis and be interactive A changing club experience including small clubs eg the Continental, the Cyprus Tavern, the Jigsaw, the Jungfrau and many more using as many real life experiences, reminiscences and memorabilia. An Iconic venue that made it worthwhile to visit Manchester to see and hear for yourself Very similar to the Strawberry Studios exhibition I have set up in Stockport Museum - a mixture of sound, video and artefacts that tell an interesting story. The story is already there but we just need to get it across!! I like the ideas mentioned, like timelines for different music styles, places to listen to music from different eras/styles. good informative history. Info about the scenes and bands Manchester helped not just Manchester bands. Info on venues, old posters, gig lists etc, like the stuff on MDMA. A bit of Hulme history and the importance of that would be good, too. Interactive, not just a standard museum, live acts very importantly!! It must be unique, and produce high quality work and experiences. I think some recognition of audiences and journalism would also be important. I would like it to be a living space, used day and evening (even through the night maybe for recording studios etc). It should have facilities to support new bands, education opportunities. How to
16 sessions/short courses for musicians about legal/marketing/the business etc. Networking drop in sessions for musicians or others eg promoters/venue managers/artist managers. Possibly, education could include accredited courses with a local college - leading to qualifications. A smallish venue for live music. Courses about music history/appreciation for audiences/fans. An interactive museum - trying to find ways of presenting a timeline and exhibits in an interesting/novel way - not just a series of display board. So that the visitor has a feeling of making their own discovery. The major bands should be celebrated, but the smaller local bands and ways to discover new bands should be included. Radio production - maybe even set up an online radio station. Visitors could get hands on with producing a radio show or in a recording studio. A cafe/bar/shop. Souvenir shops for visitors. Music supplies shop for musicians. Record shop/ second hand vinyl and music books. I'm not clear if the idea is to include classic music/ folk music etc., but I think an area devoted to The Halle/Ewan McColl etc would be essential to truly represent the history of Manchester's music. during the day a cafe/bar playing todays manchester music to give newer band a chance. a collective paying weekly subs that'll help new bands to form and days/evening where there will be tutors to help the younger ones get to grips with playing their instruments. artist days to help with the making of flyers/posters. a free weekly gig of no more than 3 bands to help them get that bit of exposure they may need. The Bank pub, underneath the Portico Library. Lots of photos, artwork, records and other music formats. Relive my youth. Delve back beyond my youth & see in to the future, aka to ride the ghost train of Manc' Music past, present & future (for those whose knees went before them). To buy a ticket off a tout to ride at the Apollo for all those that bought shabby 1 wash t-shirts off the pavement sellers to relive those days when a 1 size fits all where baggy. Somewhere that after I'd had my M M feast I could sit down for a brew & some Manc munchies whilst looking at my M M souvenirs after a delightful few hours to reflect & regale with fellow folk & tourists in the Manc Memory bank cafe. Able to hear the Manchester music and see the creators either on film or in photographs Having run a record shop for the last 20 years. I have seen first hand the amount of tourism the history of Manchester music brings to the city. I would like to see a venue that celebrates the past as well as promotes the future. Regular appearances by up and coming artists and well known musicians turning up on a regular basis would also be a good thing. Memorabilia for sale is a must. Archive footage, Audio stations. Manchester has had a vibrant music scene since the early 60s but always seems to be overlooked. Recreation of a good and exciting time warts and all Let ppl record sound bites of their experience like in the people's museum. Then we own it too! Hacienda and all things in the Madchester era Memorabilia, personal jukebox, onstage with your dream band, behind the mixing desk, muso's cafe, live music. The O2 Music experience in London was hold, but the Manchester one could be better, it should focus on all music from way back when and bring to life how it sounded, what it felt like and how it made people feel at the time. Definitely needs to be interactive or it won't work. For me it would enabale me to re live my youth and the amazing music around at that time (80s/90s), but it should also allow other generations (e.g. My parents, the 50s) to do the same Joy division, new order, oasis, the smiths, the stone roses, Toby Wilson everything Manc please!!! It needs to be a celebration of the Manchester music scene throughout the decades (e.g. Hollies to the Blossoms). It needs to be relevant and representative of today's scene. Live music is essential as well as key recordings of important gigs/concerts. Posters, memorabilia (e.g. James rain poncho from Alton Towers) and a thorough discography of each band. Perhaps a nod to other bands who tagged along with Madchester (Soup Dragons, etc). For me the venue and the museum would need to stimulate memories and nostalgia, but it must also be forward looking. To be relevant it needs to host new music, provide recording facilities for new artists, with a state of the art concert venue. Re-use of the Hippodrome. Move the Garden Centre to Birley Fields, incorporate the Junction Pub into the plans
17 Versatile, lots of memorabilia, accessable archives (eg audio & visual booths / rooms, live venue, merchandise shop. Extensive tributes to those key players who are no longer with us (AHW, Gilly). My favourite bands and artists represented (Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, Stone Roses) - free entrance with donations, film archives. I loved the mmt with Craig Gill and would love something in that vein - relaying passion and experience and reality! The roots of a city can be heard in it's music i beleive - music is integral to MCR that needs exploring further - look at how so many working class lads were able to create that powerful camaraderie and transcend their immediate surroundings (stone roses, mondays, inspirals, morrissey, oasis etc) and investment in future music in a similar vein (cabbage) - support for independent venues, live bands etc staying away from the corporate big wigs. Mainly the Smiths, but it would have to represent each & every aspect of Manchester music Rare and unseen photographs, music get brain cannon involved he's ace, band history, memorabilia, talks from bans members tours run starting and ending there, gigs new music as well as old. I would like to see a venue which was multi-functional, I would like to see the history of music in Manchester through the last 60 years and some sort of timeline - I would also like to see dedicated areas within this timeline for bands, genres and venues which where possible worked alongside bands and people connected to venues to provide exhibitions which get the right feel. I think there should be some sort of performance or function space to connect the past to the future. I think that there should be retail and restaurant facilities. I think the retail space should tie in with brands which are iconic within the Manchester music scene and there could even be specific ranges designed with that in mind. I would like to see typically northern food in the restaurant. Interactive, Manchester music through the ages, information re specific sites of interest in the area, passionate curators with relevant knowledge, ideally with first hand experience of music scene & musical history of the city, museum set up sympathetically to reflect Craig Gill's legacy, & passion for local music through his Music Tours My dream venue would reflect the layout of an actual Manchester venue. For me it would be the Electric Circus, but I appreciate others may recall different venues. It would be immersive, lots of music and videos. Loads of memorabilia set out in an exciting way. Not typically stiff and 'museum-y'. A licensed bar is always a bonus!! A celebration of all the great influential music that has come from the Manchester District (Salford included.) A venue that provides the background to the cities musical history and takes you on a journey that is both interactive and informative. Celebrating it's music heritage in an imaginative and creative way utilising modern technology and ensuring that the artists themselves engage understanding the need to document their story for future generations. I am already interviewing and recording on film key personnel with a story to tell. These form part of my Manchester Pop Trail column in the MEN. Both Craig and I had discussed a museum and bar such was our frustrations hence the meet with Allied London. I launched The Beatles in Manchester Tour with Craig and brought back Pete Best to the Playhouse Theatre where The Beatles made their debut and history in Hulme! Please check out my website at www.manchesterpoptrail.co.uk and www.thebeatlesinmanchester.co.uk The sites say all about me with a biog page that has grown since collaborating with Craig and the tours. Let me know if I can be of help. I've also launched a range of Music Heritage Greeting Cards that were on sale at the Xmas market and looking to promote in the new year along with Trafford Rocks - a tour of the borough rich in musical moments inc the roots of The Smiths and Stone Roses. Paul Wilde It should tell the story of the Manchester music sene and all it has done to shape the world but also be a breeding ground for the next generation Like a theatre or cinema. Shows would be good. Be great to have quality underrated bands playing from time to time. An acid house room would be good. Rooms for each record label and information on the bands who were on that label. A souvenir (gift) shop (keyrings posters t-shirts badges etc even records if possible) be good to see rare collectors stuff in bullet proof glass around the museum I hope it's not overloaded with too much from one group one era there is a rich and beautiful history here Warehouse size building with different rooms and floors covering all different genres and times of Manchester music scene. Cinematography, music videos, band documentaries. Memorabilia (view rare items but also be able to buy). Vinyl also on sale. New bands ..short sessions for people to listen to them. Recording studios and workshops. Hopefully the buy in from the established musicians to give advice. Question and answer session with musicians. The experience for me would be to feel transported to a time and place within the confines of the building, feel immersed in the sounds and smells of e.g. Smiths gig or the same at a new order or stone roses. Not just about Manchester but surrounding areas. Not just about the music but also about our long lost venues fashions and gigs A room filled with every local bands memoribilia. All charting mcr bands featured in videos. History of manc bands feature.
18 all the city's music history not just the 80 and 90s. Venues as well as manc acts: Gigs such as sex pistols at FTH and Jimi Hendrix at the twisted wheel It would be about alternative music. The bits that didn't make millions. No Dave Haslam or John Robb. A space that captures the Mancunian, northern spirit of the time and an ability to represent the edginess of why our creative style is respected all over the world. Possibly a venue experience, that bottles up the sights, sounds and smells of space that we have such fond and vivid memories of - and there are plenty ! I went to an exhibition at The Liverpool bienale in the Fact cinema which had different immersive audio visual exhibits Influences to and from Manchester via immigration and export routes and the roots of our popular and folk music from as far back as provable. Our internationalist culture should be celebrated. Check Dave Haslam's Manchester book. This should definitely cover all the main eras and especially big Manchester bands and venues. But I think it's also important to have a space for the future of Manchester music, and those up and coming acts - not to see it as purely historic, but something that's still going strong! Immersive cornerhouse would be amazing I'd like to see this venue in the cornerhouse to save it from becoming a wasted venue. Think it's a good location as it's near several gig venues to capture people who may visit on their way to a gig, especially if it had a bar a bit like the ramones museum in Berlin. Appreciating the past but looking to the future, not simply drowning in nostalgia. There is nothing in Manchester celebrating its music cultural legacy and development into the future diy record collections fanzines from the punk and post punk era A celebration of the old classics and the lesser known bands who made up the scene. A great live venue to complement and keep the facility forward looking. For me it would start off with the hacienda days stone roses happy mondays acid house scene then go right up to current bands I would love to see a building packed full of memorabilia and stories about the bands. That when you walk in the door, you know you are going to be transported back to actual time No dream venue. But to enable everyone (regardless of age, culture or ability) to see and learn about our music culture. I would love to see something like the Seattle Museum of popular culture....let's you immerse unselfish in music and its history, try recording studios, make videos as well as other things Manchester can offer like sport and street art. The Manchester Music Museum should consist of every important musician that this city has produced - we think only of Madchester at times but we need to honour some of the other greats such as The Hollies, 10CC, Bee Gees and so on, bringing it right up to the present day and to also encourage new bands and musicians to give them a platform for their work. A fully interactive display together with donated memorabilia (as you would see in the National Football Museum) would attract visitors far and wide. I'd work here, I consider myself to have excellent music knowledge and I'm an archetypal Mancunian who is extremely proud of our heritage and especially our musical talent. It would be in a place within Manchester that had musical history, if it were a new build I see a black and yellow piece of architecture that sits proudly amongst some of Manchester's other recognised buildings. Being a graphic designer myself I'd want to see it well branded, in the style of Manchester Music based art work. It would tell the tales of the Manchester boroughs and where our musicians came from, what their inspirations were. it would look at how Manchester music has influenced the world. It would have a juke box. A tribute to all Manc bands and artists, definately a reconstruction of the hacienda, also in liverpools people museum there is a karaoke booth thing, you could do the same but put outfits like bez maracas or the Gallagher brothers Parker jackets for people to be filmed with. Purpose built venue, resteraunt and bar, the venue would have the hacienda , new order, bee gees , 10cc, smith's. It must have album launches and signings by bands. It must sell unique merch, and it has to have a free to play local bands every week. Plus a way of recording the music and putting it out .signings Is a must.an maybe teaching kids how to play instrument classes. A proper legacy for Manchester's incredible contribution to music. A journey that would make me feel proud to be a northerner. Many yrs ago I suggested a Manchester music exhibition at pump house but it wasn't taken seriously then myself and Tony Wilson spoke about staging one at the hacienda He was really keen suggesting Freddie Garrity specs Ian's 'tear drop' guitar the exhibits have to Vibrant not well I wasn't actually there but my dad told me about the sex pistols type inclusions first hand or nothing sorry for being a grinch but it's got to be northern proper manc like Madchester of course. But also Northern Soul are a must.
19 New build iconic centre in the steps of IWM & urbis. Have a street of stars leading towards the venue on the pavement. I would be proud to show people round it! Should be fun, varied, mixed media experience, interactive. Technology alongside traditional. Preferably an adapted heritage building too, providing interest and history I'm open to ideas about how to present the rich history/archive. I think that all the bands should be onboard with the idea/concept/execution. I would like people to come away with the feeling that they were not interested in the Manchester scene beforehand they should walk out inspired to listen to bands and learn more about it. This is hard to answer because I have never come across this concept before. I guess for me it would linear. And up the present day music scene and a projected future? I remember the days when you could go to a pub and there would be live performer, usually playing guitar and singing. I would also like to see buskers recognised (esp the Manchester Drummer!! This guy does not get enough notice!). But also the buskers like the blind guy who plays (does he still?) on Market Street. And what about the Victorian music halls? Northern Soul? To hear the music but also see dancing and audience response. Interviews with people talking about their 'musical Manchester' experience. I would like to see it in a old refurbished building. Rather than new build. I think it's a fantastic idea!! With great potential. Maybe it could also include lesser known Manchester band, historic and present. Focus on both old and new, with support for up and coming Manchester acts. A forward looking international approach rather than being too insular I want somewhere to show my heritage off to my friends and family that live aboard. They all know and love the Manchester music scene but we have nowhere that puts it all together and tells the story. Give accessibility hopefully affordably to a wide range of the public. Music is a great lift and inspiration A fantastic day of learning about artist. Love hearing all the background stories. Seeing costumes donated. Possibility of meeting a famous artist. It would be like afflecks. But instead of shops, it would be music. Like a little bit of each kind of music, in a building that you could just get lost inside of. Somewhere somewhere very accessible in the heart of the city with a great bar/ cafe facilities to make it a go to destination. With an ever changing theme that focuses on different genres and themes to keep interest levels up. An annual festival would be good that featured new talent to stop it being a purely nostalgic experience. Info on how important Manchester is to the British music scene. Reminders of pioneering projects of the past e.g. The Hacienda and a taste of il & coming music of the present & future. The venue would be a feast for the ears and a place to feel proud of our Mancunian heritage I'd love to see The Cornerhouse continue to be a part of Manchester's history and future. A proud collection demonstrating the huge influence Manchester's talent has had on the music scene world wide & on Manchester's growth as a city Get guy garvey involved. Get other artists involved. Madchester. Hacienda. Oasis. 24 Hour Party People. Etc. Do this right and the museum will speak for itself A walk through musical history, celebrating all milestones and talent in Music, A celebration of how music has enriched the planet and lifted peoples experience of life. A demonstration of all musical instruments and demonstrations, different bar areas with varied styles Jazz, Rock, classical . country, being demonstrated. Wide variety of genres represented. Many lesser-known local bands. Enthusiastic to promote current music scene. Some history of lesser-known past venues. Great Manchester music and influences across the decades, with submersible experiences in the day and quarterly/monthly flash-back club nights. It would be lovely to keep the old Cornerhouse, but if it were possible it wouldn't be large enough as museum, venue and musicians facilities would need to be in the same or adjoining buildings. Ideally the building would be old and have musical significiance. Pity the Free Trade Hall isn't a possibility. There has to be a space were classic Manchester music plays all the time with exhibited memorabilia and also one which plays the music of new bands 70 Oxford Street! Right by the old hacienda, exhibitions above, screenings/sound experiences below! It would be a venue of international significance that represented not just Manchester music but world music. However, at the same time it would acknowledge Manchester's impressive musical heritage. It would explore the importance of music to culture and sub-culture. A venue with lots photographic images, instruments, printed lyrics, small dance floor for when the music grabs you. Live acts relating to a specific genre/era in line with a revolving display. A couple of recording studios. If music students were to entertain, it may be possible to provide free concerts. Live performances must be good for their cv's. Hosts wearing relevant costumes/fashion /make-up. Screenings of films relevant to the genre/era. Background music relevant to display. Screenings of film
20 and television interviews with artists. Vinyl, tapes and discs. Listening booths like the early days of HMV Manchester. Dance performances, both classical and modern. Could go on forever! Local community and involve the people of Manchester who experienced the scene The underground scenes through the ages Sections for each decade. Big acts that warrant own sections: Joy Division/New Order, Stone Roses, Smiths, Happy Mondays. A Madchester section. Hacienda/Factory section. Context of social history of city The old corner house would be fantastic, it would be great to see it put to a public use that is still immersed in performance art. Manchester music is such an eclectic mix of genres and should be celebrated. A mill in ancoats with outdoor areas A chance to truly experience Manchester culture from a bygone age and inspire the next generation. A focal point for the past and future to meet. It must be a breeding ground for the evolution of Manchester music and culture with respect to the past! The building should not take precedence over the exhibits, spend more money on them, that's what people want to see. The building should be accessible by all means of transport. Let the surrounding businesses do most of the catering with passouts for visitors so they can come and go. I envisage visitors spending one to three days exploring the past, present and future of many music genres. As someone who frequently visited Manchester in the mid-late 80's onwards and moved here permanately in 2005.I have always found people to be interested to know what this City has done in terms of historical achievements and cultural influence. There are a host of venues that have closed down that many would've wanted to go and rarely see the impact it has not just at the time. It is an exciting opertunity for new acts, and tribute to past acts. Broad coverage of the music scene, not just the obvious acts. More people failed to break through than were successful and yet they still made amazing music. Every band has at least one great song in them. Also like to see these acts see a track each released for free each month to members. Would need to not be too backward looking and big enough to be successful and make the most of all Manchester has offered. it's really more about its programme/contents than the fabric but needs to be central/visibile/good footfall Would include oral and visual histories of venues and acts who have appeared in Manchester as well as home grown. Pictorial archive of all the venues that we have had (and now lost!!) including the small ones. I basically want to sink into nostalgia for all the fantastic music I have seen in Manchester in the last 45 years! Somewhere that gives a full picture of the full gig experience, with poster art, photograph (Kevin Cummings),poetry, rock family trees (eg Pete Frame) vinyl & merchandise exhibits with input from Manchester & District Music Archive A place to show music from all ages and genres, and how it's developed It developed in Manchester. Due to the social, political and economic changes. Not just indie 90's but all the different areas classical, folk, rock pop and indie. Northern soul etc. And the clubs, pubs and live music venues that supported and nurtured the scene. I spoke to Tony Wilson about this very concept we hoped to put on an exhibition at the hacienda utilising artefacts such as Ian's 'teardrop' guitar and Freddie (&other dreamers) glasses. So would love to see this happen Celebrate the classics and their influences.take it back to the dance halls and tell stories, through the war, sixties, onto Manchesters coming of age An old Mill (if only the Hacienda was still about!) with exhibitions by the decades and perhaps permanent exhibitions on the key acts eg New Order, Morrissey, Oasis. Lots of memorabilia and interactive elements. I'd like a museum of media/culture generally to cover all aspects including TV and cinema. It's not just artists but venues that need to be represented. Speaking to Vinyl Revival in Manchester would be good for stocking a museum shop too. The likes of Peter Hook, Guy Garvey, Johnny Marr, Peter Saville would all be good people to lead the charge.
