Trying for a Baby

Trying for a baby? Have you been trying to have a baby but it’s taking longer than expected? Here are 6 quick tips from fertility expert Dr. Arasu about trying for a baby. – Dr Arasu Muthusamy, MBBS (Malaya) M.Med O&G ( Malaya) MRCOG (London), Medical Director Fertility Associates

1 Age affects fertility:

Age is the most important factor when having a baby. Young women without fertility problems have about a 25% chance per month of having a baby naturally. This falls to about 12% at age 37 and 5% at 42. Fertility treatments like IVF do not overcome the effect of age but they can increase the chance of success.

2 If you are over 30 and yet to have a baby – now is the time to start trying: For example if you are 39 years old you should consider seeking help after 5 months of trying. Every year counts when you are getting into your late 30s. To work out your chances, visit our Online Biological Clock or App – this can also tell you how long to try for naturally before going to a fertility doctor. www.fertilityassociates.com.my

3 Testing your fertility:

Today we have the Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) test to help predict how many eggs you are likely to obtain in an IVF cycle and may help identify who may experience early menopause. This test can be done through Fertility Associates in PJ.

4 Health conditions that affect fertility:

If you experience other conditions such as Polycystic Ovaries (PCOS) or Endometriosis, you should seek expert fertility help as soon as possible.

5 Get your husband tested too:

About 50% of infertility is partly caused by the man – so seek help together.

6 See a specialised fertility doctor:

Often couples continue doing basic fertility treatments without seeing a fertility specialist. Most doctors are not fertility experts, even if they offer some types of treatment. Look for the fertility specialist credentials when choosing your doctor for fertility treatment.

The sooner you see a Fertility Associates doctor, the better your chances of success.
