SELF RELIANCE THE SPACE BETWEEN COLLISION / ANALYSIS WOODLAND INVERTED PERCEPTION LIBERATING THE PODIUM

SELF RELIANCE Comprehensive Studio Carol Burns Culinary Arts School

This project aimed to establish independence from external resources through the use of passive systems and green techniques. A green wall on the buildings south face provides a library of fresh herbs and vegetables for culinary students to explore new techniques. These herbs and vegetables can be used in house. Excess food will be sold in a farmers market located on the buildings ground level between a restaurant and cafe. The growers act as ever changing shading devices while its confinement offers stack ventilation produced from a double glazed facade. The green wall allows students to see food from growth to creation while presenting that notion to the community of the South End, Boston.

WORLDS END Landscape Studio Rob Trumbour Cartographer’s Center

This landscape project positioned between two drumlins at World’s End in Hingham, MA was born from site analysis. Self generated tools, textural ink plots, provided the means of analysis. Large 36x24 in sheets of water color paper were pinned to a variety ground conditions at worlds end. Frozen blocks of black ink were set onto the paper for a period of 3 hours to melt, staining the paper. Each plot yielded different and distinct images effected by ground conditions, solar rays, temperature, humidity, and wind. This commutative analysis does not represent data rather an image affected by distinct site conditions. It is not measurable instead experiential. The graph below represents the histograms, an image’s measure of light and dark, from each plot. The darkened line represents the average - my attempt to mediate a distinctively varied landscape analytically. Responding to the analysis I chose my building to sit where I had collected the plot with most contrasting dynamic - the bar between the two drumlins. Ironically this site featured the most dynamic topophgraphy as it bridged the two drumlins.

The Truss

Variating structural sides emphasize a dynamic contrast between a heavy concrete footing and an inserted steel column.

The main element of this building is represented by a truss embedded in the landscape. The truss is grounded on one side by minimal footings. On the other side a large mass of concrete dives into the earth creating a new edge condition as the building meats the water. The truss heightens the sense of elevational change as it sits level within the rolling landscape. Visitors are able to walk along a promenade birthed from the ground plane. The Cartographer center connects to this promenade offering a meander from existing circulation. As visitors continue to circulate the promenade they are introduced to new programatic changes from public to private. The goal of the building is to heighten the dynamic experience between the drumlins by providing a structural comparative, the truss.

The diagram above illustrates the process taken to arrange program in consideration to sound. Program is transformed from scale to sound level experience and eventually target acoustics.

Our Senses Dictate Motives; feelings inhibiting reaction Adjacent to the financial district sits plans for the fan pier development and site of our proposed boat pavilion. The site exists as a junction between the chaotic noises of urbanism and the organic tranquility of water. Approaching the site is an experience of transitional sounds overlapping and at times colliding. My response to site through a process of measured recordings and analysis yields a building concept to emphasis this transition - to heighten the sites experience.

Landscape Studio Rob Trumbour Artist Residence - Gallery

This project sought to embrace landscape. Drawing influence from the expressed topography of the tree line I created a structure that emerges from the ground plane. This added topography creates varied views and altered perceptions directly associated with the canopy. Visitors circulate on the structure as it transforms from path to enclosure.

INVERTED PERCEPTION Landscape Studio Rob Trumbour Dewey Sq Instalation - Competition

Boston began as the Shawmut Peninsula. With increasing populations and limited space the city began to expand through a series of 5 major landfill developments. This idea of expansion influenced the design for this project. Through a series of representation layers and vegetative walls the project aimed to provide a space to escape from the city while experiencing a district seasonal change. This project was presented as a partnered competition within the entire studio over a two week period.

< EPHEMERAL QUALITIES SEASONALLY The center space remains dense being populated by evergreens while the exterior components open as a result of seasonal plant presense. REFERENCE TO BOSTON DEVELOPMENT > Landfill geometries are abstracted to create a new form with a series of variated elevation heights. Pre-existing land represents the highest levels and the most resent additions meet flush with existing Dewey Square hardscape.

Adjacent sides represent two methods of thinking. An interpolated front piece embodies the creative flowing process of the right brian while the opposing corner illustrates the left brains sense of logic, structure, and refinement. These two styles represent a compositional balance of practicality and form associated with architectural practice. This project showcases the work of Boston Green Building, a sustainable contractor devoted to the ideals of design build and how these two qualities when properly balanced created comfortable green homes.

DESIGN PROPOSAL

< Left is the completed project equipped with an ipad. The curved LED wall separates the two podiums while attracting onlookers.

This project was CNC milled. This method allowed for quick fabrication of the 30 variating layers. Precision was key to generate the forms integrity.
