A look at John McCain’s time as a Prisoner Of War Story • Samara Link John McCain, former Arizona senator, House representative, presidential candidate, and naval aviator, passed away in his home on Saturday, August 25, at age 82 after an arduous battle against brain cancer.

of Vietnam’s capital. This was small amount of turmoil compared to what he would later endure at the Hoa Loa Prison (more famously known as the “Hanoi Hilton”) where he was taken in the back of a truck on a stretcher.

MCain was considered a man of extreme integrity, courage, and a “moral compass for the Senate,” as stated by Heidi Heitkamp in a recent interview with KFYR News.

Over the next few days, McCain was interrogated by North Vietnamese employees of the prison who accused him of war-criminal charges. They told him, “You will only receive medical treatment if you talk.” McCain stayed strong throughout the beatings and only would confess his name, serial number, rank, and date of birth.

Less known about “the Maverick”, his popular nickname, was McCain’s experience as a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam from October 26, 1967 to March 1972, time span of over five years. His time as hostage was brutal experience which would inevitably change the course of his life forever. McCain was flying over Hanoi, Vietnam on his 23rd mission when a Russian missile blew off the wing of his A-E4 Skyhawk. Shortly after being self-ejected from the dive bomber and falling down at a rapid speed, McCain fractured both arms and his right leg. He recalled going in and out of consciousness and eventually deployed his parachute. Down he went into Hanoi’s largest freshwater lake, West Lake. McCain struggled to come to the surface of the lake, and with each breath of air, he sank down again into the water. Swimming was extremely difficult with the amount of equipment he was wearing and his recent injury. A group of North Vietnamese citizens spotted McCain, pulled him to the surface, and began to beat and strip him of his clothes in the middle

McCain was eventually taken to a hospital and stayed in a filthy room where the rain often filled up to an inch of water on the floor. During the rest of his time at the hospital, McCain experienced a failed realignment of his arm (without any pain killers) and a poorlydone surgery on his leg. Until much later, he had no idea how the surgery was attempted. An orthopedic surgeon found out that all of McCain’s ligaments on one side were cut, and the incision was incorrectly preformed. After his stay in the hospital, McCain was taken to a prisoner camp in the Hilton. McCain had to rely heavily on the other captives to help him survive because he was kept in a chest cast and stretcher. The prisoners would do a majority of McCain’s everyday tasks for him, often spoon feeding him. Although he was not expected to live much longer, McCain slowly began to recover. Soon after recovery McCain was moved to solitary confinement where he was beaten and tortured, both physically and mentally.

What does Mr. Hager think? How do you think McCain changed the political environment?

“[C]ontrary to the belief of our current president, John McCain is a war hero, captured or otherwise.” Mark Hager, Dean of Students

1  News

“I think John McCain is kind of a rarity for politicians, in that he generally voted his conscious, rather than the party line. Sometimes that made him popular with members of the other party, but I don’t think he really cared about that. I think he cared about what his constituents voted him in office to do and that is to do right by them regardless if his vote favored Republican or Democratic ideology.” Do you know anyone who was a POW, and if so, how has that impacted their way of life? “I do not know any POW’s, but I can say that, contrary to the belief of our current president, John McCain is a war hero, captured or otherwise.”

“Nothing in life is more liberating than to fight for a cause larger than yourself, something that encompasses you but is not defined by your existence alone.” John McCain

To keep his mind sharp and positively focused, McCain often made up stories in his head, memorizing names and pondering topics like history, politics, and philosophy. He was alone in a dim and hot room, but McCain was still able to secretly communicate with fellow prisoners through tapping on walls. If caught, they would be horrendously beaten or tortured. Until the day of his death, he recalled the code. “Communication was vital for survival,” said McCain. There was a man by the name of Ernie Brace who this quote applied to especially. Brace was kept captive in the jungle for over three years and held inside a bamboo cage with a rope and iron choker around his neck. Brace experienced heavy emotional and physical trauma which nearly ruined the hopes him being able to use his legs again. He is just one man who McCain conferred with during his time in solitary confinement. Eight months in, John’s honor was tested at the “Hanoi Hilton” when he was offered to be released by the Viet Cong. Tempted and asked several times to talk, McCain refused. Of course, the beatings got worse because of his rejection. “What bothered me most about it was that I knew that they’d go to the other prisoners and say, ‘See your country doesn’t care about you. They only care about the admirals’ sons.’ I knew

that’s what they would do, and I couldn’t do that to my fellow prisoners,” said McCain in the personal account of his POW time published by US News.

McCain’s impact

Because two men had escaped camp for a short amount of time, the prisoners were treated even harsher. Many were refused medical treatment. Food portions were drastically reduced, so many prisoners became even more malnourished. McCain was transported to a different part of camp which gave him some hope. McCain was moved twice afterwards and communication was improved between his fellow prisoners. A place called “Camp Unity” was where McCain was moved next. There, 40-50 men stayed in a room at a time. McCain and and the other men were later kicked out to punishment camp for holding and illegal Christian church service.

By January, the men were placed in better conditions and allowed to congregate with each other again. Group by group, soldiers were sent home, and on March 15, John’s name was called and he was free to go home after over five years of suffering and pain. Cara Mund wins Miss America

Story •Brooklyn Brown Cara Mund, the current Miss America and Century High School graduate, wrote a letter stating she was bullied by the Miss America Organization. In an interview with Good Morning America, Mund accused chairwoman Gretchen Carlson and CEO Regina Hopper of the Miss America Organization of “disrespect and passive aggressive behavior.”

In her letter sent on August 17 to former Miss Americas, Cara wrote: “If you want Miss America to be relevant, then the leadership needs to understand she [Miss America] is not a windup toy who they can power up to spit out the meaningless words that are put into her mouth, and then put back on the shelf until it’s time to do it again.”

Gretchen Carlson said, “I have never bullied Cara Mund. We have supported Cara for her entire year and we will continue to support her. It’s just disappointing that she chose to air her grievance publicly and not privately,” she told ABC News on August 17.

In her interview with The Press of Atlantic City, she blamed the Miss America Organization for cutting speeches and making wardrobe decisions. Mund claimed she was excluded from interviews and meetings and repeatedly called names.

Mund competed four years before she won Miss North Dakota in June 2017 and was later named Miss America that September. Mund expected a negative reaction from people and possibly even losing her crown. She said, “There’s so much more about doing what’s right, for the competition and the people taking part in it.” Even with Carlson’s claims, more than two dozen past champions are standing next to Cara, demanding Carlson and other board members to step down from their places. This June, the organization will stop judging candidates based on their external beauty, and the swimsuit portion will be cut as well. According to the New York Post, “disagreements over the swimsuit policy and other internal issues also led four board members to leave after only a few months.”

Mund wants to make a difference in the organization and does not want future winners to be treated the way that she was treated. Carlson accused Mund for losing the organization $75,000 in scholarship funds. Mund raised funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and other charities, raising more

Presidential reality show Justice for all?

Story and graphics • Rylie Fode In the 2016 Presidential Election, Donald Trump won the position and title of President of the United States of America. His campaign, which sought to “Make America Great Again,” was clearly successful, but recent events have been bringing the campaign’s honesty and legality into question. Special counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating the Russian hacker allegations surrounding Trump’s campaign. However, there are numerous additional violations being examined as well.

“NO COLLUSION-RIGGED WITCH HUNT” President Trump’s Twitter

In the first trial on August 21, 2018, Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, was found guilty of eight campaign finance crimes. His crimes included failing to file a report of foreign bank and financial accounts in addition to bank fraud. His sentence has yet to be decided by presiding Judge T.S. Ellis. While Manafort’s crimes are significant, they are only the first of many that are coming into light.

The payments On the same date that Manafort was found guilty, Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s lead campaign advisor, plead guilty to eight campaign finance violations in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York. One of these violations was tax evasion. The other was “hush money” payments to two women Trump allegedly had affairs with. According to Cohen’s statements, two women, former Playboy model Karen McDougal and porn star Stephanie Clifford, were paid, in total, $280,000 from both the Trump Organization and Cohen’s personal funds in order to persuade them to withhold information of their affairs from American voters during the time of the election. Cohen also claims he made these payments under the request and order of Trump to increase the likelihood of a Trump victory in the 2016 election. If these accusations are found to be true by Mueller, the violations, being federal felony offenses, would be grounds for the indictment or impeachment of President Trump.

Trump’s response Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, appeared on Fox News and CNN on July 3o and said that no allegations were made towards the president in Cohen’s statements. In an interview with Donald Trump on Fox and Friends on June 14, two months prior to the

trials of Manafort and Cohen, Trump claimed to know nothing of the payments being made to these women and said that the case is a “witchhunt” within the political world. Both of Trump’s statements conflict with, not only the claims Cohen made in court, but also a statement Trump later made saying he paid the women with his own money. With such opposing statements within Trump’s defense, the honesty of the president has been brought into question as well as the honesty of his campaign members.

Could he be indicted or impeached? The laws surrounding impeachment and indictment are unclear. According to Sol Winsenburg, who served as the conductor of the grand jury questioning in the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, as well as other legal experts, it is unlikely that Trump will be indicted because he is a sitting president. It is thought that the process would distract Trump from his presidential responsibilities, an opinion shared by Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee for Supreme Court Justice. However, impeachment remains a possibility.

Was it ethical to keep the affairs from voters?

Annika Henrickson, Democrat

Michaela Quaschnick, undecided

Kara Graeber, Republican

“It wasn’t ethical. When you look at what was happening with Hillary, I think Trump only won because of the media coverage Hillary was getting over the false accusations about her emails. Had people known of this, it would have influenced their decisions.”

“It was not ethical. When electing somebody with so much power over your life, you should know all of the facts about the people campaigning.”

“It was completely ethical. I think there is a fine line between what a person should have in their personal life and their professional life. It’s kind of like being a celebrity and having paparazzi in your face all the time. Not everyone needs to know your business.”

What is impeachment?

s “These agreements are very common among celebrities and people of wealth [...] The agreement was used to stop the spread of false and extortionist accusations made by her about an affair [...] Money from the campaign, or campaign contributions, played no role in this transaction.”

In the Constitution, impeachment is defined as a formal statement of charges against a member of office. The process taken to impeach an office member, such as the president, would begin in the House of Representatives, needing only a majority to pass.

President Trump’s Twitter

If it passes, a formal trial would then take place in the Senate, in which a two-thirds vote is required for removal from office. So, according to the Constitution, Donald Trump could be impeached and still remain in office as the President of the United States.

The two sides People’s desire for and opinions on the likelihood of Trump’s impeachment are split: his supporters believing his presidency should not and will not be affected and his critics hoping for his removal. Those leaning right tend to think Trump paid the women in order to protect himself and his family from the ridicule they would receive if the public learned of Trump’s affairs with Karen McDougal and Stephanie Clifford, whereas more left-leaning individuals tend to believe that the payments were made with the election in mind.

Annika Hendrickson, a student at Century High School and a Democrat, said that she feels as if Trump “is further weaving himself into a web of lies,” referring to his conflicting statements about his involvement in the payments.

Trump’s differing claims lead Hendrickson to believe that “it is most likely that Cohen is telling the truth” and that “Trump could very well be impeached.”

Another student, Republican Kara Graeber, believes that Trump, “just as a normal person,” paid the women to “not have the problems” that would occur as a result of the release of the withheld information.

As more information is revealed throughout Mueller’s investigation, the truth of Cohen’s claims and, in turn, the fate of President Trump will be determined.

Book controversy in North Dakota Banning in Beulah In January 2009, the Beulah High School library banned Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The school board banned it due to a request from parents who had found the book too be sexually explicit and a bad example for school kids. The author of the book, John Berendt, said he was surprised by the opposition to his book. He has said that the book isn’t sexually graphic but merely “[s]alty and racy”.

Encouraging ignorance Book ‘banning’ is harmful for everyone Opinion • Abby Surdez Since the invention of the written word—there has been the suppression of information. Book censorship, the prevention of access to a book as a whole or a portion of its content, is one of the most popular forms of censorship throughout history. Controversial topics, profanity, racism, politics, religion, and sexual content are possible reasons for schools, judges, and governments to deem certain literary works taboo. While a school may be banning a book, such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a coming of age tale by Mark Twain, for excessive use of racial slurs, I come to wonder if keeping students shielded from something as blunt and hateful as the racist past of the South is really the best thing for them. Ignorance is bliss, right? Wrong. Censoring or ‘banning’ a book, such as Huck Finn, essentially keeps students away from having a deeper understanding of our nation’s history and the harsh reality of the time. Individuals who believe such works are too ‘sensitive’ for students are promoting the continual ignorance of our youth. Censorship is not just Cold War Era literary persecution. For hundreds of years, different translations of the Bible were banned by popes all throughout Europe (such translations viewed as “against” the word of God). Student groups comprised of Nazis in early 1930’s Germany burned books they considered to be ‘unGerman’. The famed Library of Alexandria, a library so large an additional branch was built at a temple, was burned down, with all of the text 8  Opinion

lost forever. In our very own state, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was banned in Beulah. Curious about the thoughts of someone who works with books everyday, I asked Mrs. Phillips, our library media specialist, her thoughts about book bannings and censorship. “I obviously think books should not be banned,” she said. “Every person and student has the right to read what they want to read. It’s our First Amendment right to think and read what we wan. It’s my goal as a library media Specialist that people know that and use resources to become more knowledgeable.”

“Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance.” Laurie Halse Anderson

Freedom of thought and speech is our First Amendment right, and yet schools and libraries around the country continue to ban books. However, with the great resources and phenomenal staff we have at Century, if you’re determined to learn, you can.

Many people went to a meeting to defend their right to read to the book. This ultimately was what caused the school board to reverse their decision, just four days after the initial banning.

Burning in Drake In November 1973, Bruce Severy, a new Drake high school English teacher decided to read Slaughterhouse Five to his class. One student, who was not very fond of the book, decided to show it to her mother, who then complained to the school board. Students were then asked to hand back the offending book and two others, Deliverance and book of short stories with various authors like John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway. If a student refused to give back the books, they were taken from their lockers. The books were then all incinerated in the school burner. Dale Fuhrman, the superintendent at the time, insisted that burning the books was simply the most logical way to get rid of unused materials at the time.

Bonjour from France

My journey to Paris Story •Matthew Huber

We started our journey to Paris by night train. The group made it in time to the train car, and when we entered, it was a narrow way down to our quarters. The area was small enough that I could touch the both sides, but there was enough room for six people.

couldn’t stop staring at the buildings. The architecture was just beautiful. The city of Paris was just well preserved from all this time, to the beginning to the modern day.”

Touring Paris

Later on, we arrived at the station. Once we got out of the station, the city was lovely. The spaces between the buildings and the scenery was just amazing.

After the station, we took the subway to go see the Louvre. The Louvre was just beautiful with really stunning art like the Mona Lisa. It was in a packed room with people taking pictures it. With another portraits, architecture, and artifacts throughout the ages, it seemed it would take six years to look within the Louvre itself, but my group finish it in three hours. It was amazing.

“That three days we spend in Paris, in one sentence: it was paradise.”

Kralicek said, “Seeing the Louvre was just wonderful. With all the art, it was amazing to see. The Notre Dame was one of the highlights of the trip; it was an architectural masterpiece that dominated the skyline.”

I woke up when the train made a complete stop, and I got a text from my phone company: “You are in Switzerland.” The train soon started again.

Cole Kralicek

It was fun for me, but some of the others were experiencing some of the side of effects of night train, swaying side to side. But they eventually got better throughout the day.

Another student’s experience Cole Kralicek was on the trip with me. He said, “Paris was an art piece on its own. The city was like a canvas, for all its millions of painters, artists, and architects that lived in the city. When we first arrived at the train station, the architecture was an art piece on its own. Around the same area was the Notre-Dame, a medieval Catholic cathedral, that it is incredible to see with your eyes with the wonderful architecture to the stained glass. It was just beautiful.

Within the garden was a fountain filled with fish where children pushed little toy boats using long sticks. It was just so peaceful to see that area. It was just beautiful, and I wish I could stay there forever but I couldn’t.

Next we went to the Luxembourg Gardens to take an art lesson from two local artists.

The next day, we took a bus to go see the Palace of Versailles! The gardens were so beautiful than art inside of the palace itself. We rented a cart and explored a little more than the hedge maze.

The lesson was to draw your surroundings and a self portrait of someone else. My sister tried to draw me, but instead, drew a younger version of Donald Trump.

The palace was so enormous, beautiful, and elegant.

Later, we saw the self portrait Vincent Van Gogh at the Musée d’Orsay, another museum with wonderful art. Later that night, we went a boat ride that took us up and down the river. When we went under the bridges, we all started shouting or howling. It was funny, and it was cool to hear that different people from around the world on that boat were doing the same thing. After the boat ride, we stuck along the same area and ate supper around the Eiffel Tower. My sister and I ate a hot dog in a baguette and a cheeseburger front of the Eiffel Tower. It was a very American thing to do.

A. The Eiffel Tower lights glittered, and it was so beautiful to watch. The final day in Paris was wonderful but to say goodbye was hard. We went into a city that had the fastest elevator in Europe. To the ground to the highest point took 30 seconds, and see all of Paris was beautiful. I loved it: the art, the tourism, and the wonderful food. I love Paris with all my heart, and I thought it was perfect. I wish I could go on the trip again.

My opinion The Kissing Booth is a great movie to watch if you are craving some drama and love. However, this movie is crammed with extra scenes that did not need to be added. Noah has anger issues and gets into fights and beats many people up. I can see Elle and him in a disagreement and Noah hitting her. My favorite out of the two is To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before because it is not rushed like The Kissing Booth. The characters Peter and Laura Jean bond with each other, and they learn to get through loss together. Fans are going crazy for Peter Kavinsky, starred by Noah Cehineo. He is blowing up social media and melting many hearts.
