Ricardo Bak Gordon was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1967. He studied in Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto, in Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and in the Milan Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1990. During that year he created the Vilela & Gordon atelier, together with Carlos Vilela Lúcio. In the year 2000 he created the atelier Bak Gordon Arquitectos, where he currently works. He has been a project assistant in Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa, Universidade Moderna de Lisboa, most recently at the School of Architecture of the Instituto Superior Técnico, IST-UTL, all in Lisbon, Portugal. He was a tutor of the degree in architecture in Escola Superior Artística do Porto and, participated in several international seminars of architecture. In 2002, the project for the “Residence of the Portuguese Embassy” in Brasilia, Brasil, wins the first prize of the international competition. In 2006 wins another international competition regarding the “First Lisbon Architecture Triennale” an exhibition layout at Álvaro Siza´s Portuguese pavilion, in Lisbon. In 2008 is once more recognized with a first place prize on the competition for the “Portuguese Pavilion in ExpoZaragoza”. In the same year wins the competition for the “Requalification of two plazas” in Serpa, a developing village in Portugal. He was chosen, among others, to work on three requalification projects for the modernisation of public schools in Portugal, of which “Garcia de Orta School”, in 2010, is an example. Most recently, besides being the contact office for the Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha in the project for the new “Carriage Museum” in Lisbon, was also acknowledged - ex aequo with the Spanish duo Mansilla and Tuñón - with the FAD 2011 award for the project “Two houses in Santa Isabel”, in Lisbon, Portugal.

The project is located in the city of Porto, north of Portugal. It was integrated in the national program for the modernization of public schools, with the aim to assure both the durability and sustainability of the interventions, accomplishing the in force educational politics. The approach was to analyse the existing school facilities, in the light of the new goals set by the program, promoting and giving better learning/ teaching conditions. This school is defined by independent pavilions that besides having to be rehabilitated, will need complementary spaces in order to respond to the present needs. Thus, the modernization project of the school, was based on the construction of a new building, whose location, program and relationship with the existing buildings and empty spaces, can set a new centrality in the plot, providing the school the new and needed program areas. The form of the new building is defined by three rectangular volumes in continuity with each other, though slightly swerved, implanted longitudinally in relation to the school grounds. The centre volume is emptied creating a covered outdoor plaza that will serve as the epicentre of school life. The building east of the plaza has the library space that expands in two levels opened to each other through a mezzanine. It also has a polyvalent space and supporting technical areas. The building west of the plaza has the cafeteria, that uses the covered plaza as a continuity of it´s space to the outside. Also part of the west building are the laboratory, occupying both levels. I participated in the present project since March 2008 until May 2008. While I was on the 4th year of University I was defied to collaborate with my Project teacher of that year, Ricardo Bak Gordon, in order to help with the close up of a project. During this period I worked in the detailing phase, namely doing bathrooms and shower rooms, though I also have participated in the drawing of the general elements - plans, sections, elevations. It was a short but rather important experience, mainly because it was my first contact with architecture professional practice and with the work methodologies.

The connection between the Tejo River and the Baixa Pombalina is done, in a north south direction, through the orthogonal axis that are predominant in Baixa´s organization. The east west connections - between the Castle hill and Chiado - , though not yet established, are also structurally significant and most of all, needed, in this urban space dynamic. The intervention’s main goal is to articulate the different heights, thus rehabilitating the surroundings. The proposal will apprehend a combination of integrated interventions: Urban rehabilitation of Vitória Street as a structural axis of the aimed access and connection; Urban rehabilitation of Plaza Adelino Amaro da Costa and of the surrounding areas of Chão do Loureiro Market as well as the route to the Castle; Recovery of the building with door numbers 170-178 of Fanqueiros Street, and also the ground floor level of the adjacent building - Madalena Street, door numbers 147 - 155; Though the urban intervention is divided by distinct rehabilitation operations, in areas with different urban scales, the intention is to follow and apply the same premises, mainly by the option for uniform solutions and materials, thus having a conduction wire through all the intervention. The pedestrian access from Baixa to the Castle will result from respecting the existent logic of the crossed urban spaces - in terms of scale, architecture, building uses. This contributes to the development of a route towards the Castle, easily understood and identified, assuring the best comfort and accessibility to the pedestrian. I participated in this project since November 2009 until November 2010. During this one year period I had the privilege to cooperate throughout all of the project’s development: since the Surveying phase (measuring facades and streets), up to the detailing phase, where I worked directly with a senior fellow colleague. The fact that we were only two working as a team on the Reception Building, contributed to a more active and serious participation on my part. I not only draw the adopted construction solutions, but also contributed to the process of choosing, namely by participating in reunions with all the different disciplines. All of this contributed to sensitize me more towards existing constructions, and to a more profound and conscious understanding of the reality of the architectural development.

The project´s setting is an urban lot, located in Almirante Gago Coutinho Avenue, Lisbon. It is delimited west by the presence of the avenue, north and south by similar constructions, and east by the extension of an urban park called Parque da Bela Vista. The current intervention is an extension and rehabilitation of an existent house in a lot with approximately 935m2 of area. The approach is to, not only recover the residential use - contributing to the area’s revitalization, but also to maintain the existing architectonic identity, marked by significant elements to preserve such as the small tower and the balcony. The existent house, with poor architecture and construction value, contributed to the visible degrading and consequent pathologies, becoming urgent to clog up those deficiencies. The contemporary intervention is built in prolongation with the existing construction, expanding itself perpendicularly to the avenue, according to the axis of the lot and towards its interior limit. This implantation allows an even and symmetrical distribution to both houses. The dwelling-place is divided in two independent three storey residences: one oriented north and the other oriented south. The first floor is common to both residences and corresponds to the basement. The primary access to both residences is done through the outside, using the existing stairs, leading to the small tower where the individual distribution is done. In the second floor is the main entrance which distributes to the house’s social spaces. The private areas of the house are accessed by a corridor aligned with the entrance. A bit further a staircase connects with the third floor that is also common to both residences as a space of leisure. I participated in the present project since November 2010 until May 2011. During this period I worked in the detailing phase. Once again I collaborated one-on-one with the same senior fellow colleague, which again put me in a privilege-learning situation, by being able to enter in a profound level of the project. I contributed not only with the designs, but also on the debate of which construction solutions to adopt, whether in team wise, whether with the commercial and technical representatives of the chosen products/ solutions. The design evolution from drawings to construction, concretely in the detailing phase, leads to the consciousness of the architectural approach as a dynamic process that is only finished with the construction.

The private house´s setting is in Sintra, a small town west of Lisbon. The area of implantation is a lot with an area of 770m2. The lot has an existing house in an advanced degrading state. Allied to this are also the functional requests of the current proprietors, demanding profound changes to the existing house structure, which makes the rehabilitation not an option. The approach is to maintain the alignment of the existent construction as well as the relation with the wall that divides the north of the lot. The new house will rise in the void of the previous construction, taking advantage of the topography, and creating accesses that ease the mobility. This location allows the creation of a relation between the exterior and the interior spaces, emphasized by interior patio. The contemporary volume is based in a rectangular shape and is oriented in an east-west direction. The south facade faces the exterior garden where there is also a pool, this way it is possible to take full advantage of the communication between residential spaces and exterior spaces. The four-bedroom house, is developed in three floors, and engages a service patio at the lower level. The access to the house is made through the exterior, at the west top, using a ramp up to level 01. In this level are the social areas of the house. Right from the main entrance and west of the patio is the living room with access to the dining room. After the service patio is the kitchen and a small eating space. The interior circulation is done through a staircase designed parallel to the patio in order to assure the communication between all three floors. In the level 02 are the private areas: four bedrooms each with a private bathroom. I participated in the present project since May 2011 until July 2011. This project initiates simultaneous with the previous one . Though formally different, the construction solutions adopted were quite similar. My contribute was regarding the detailing phase, by taking advantage of what I had already learned in the previous process. I helped in the definition of construction solutions, participated in reunions with commercial and technical representatives of construction products and solutions, and helped closing the pendent drawings, always attempting to have the maximum rigor and critical look on whatever was asked of me. This sequence of detailing projects strengthens, in my professional instruction, the importance of rigorous and good construction, as architecture’s final goal.

There were identified real problems to which architecture should attend and respond, namely the lack of space in both school and university facilities that inhibit and limit the number of students that are able to enrol; the current spaces of the school aren’t adequate to the present student’s and teachers needs; finally, the lack of leisure space. The biggest problem is actually the lack of definition of the current activities that take place in the same space: school and university, railway station, bus station as well as other complementary spaces such as the gym; and the poor connectivity’s between all, whether physically or programmatically. The Project´s intention is to create a new south front for the existent Railway Station by extending and transforming it into a larger scale station. The connection platform is located at an height that obsessively reinforces the desire of the approximation the two existent margins of the city, going against the physical barrier that the railway is and it’s contribution to pull apart two parts of the same whole. The volume’s form was designed to relate to the railway form and intends to bring closer the two disconnect parts of the city, and with that gesture contributing to the rehabilitation of the city’s historic centre. The new “Sierre Gare Sud”, as the main entrance to the city, acts like a lattice that articulates all the existent and proposed equipment in an integrated and complementary way. The referred articulation between all equipment, contributes to its better utilization and performance; reinforces its interaction with the local community; and also contributes towards a more social and cultural Sierre. The roof of the linear element is intended to be treated as a garden-like and go through space, favouring the permanence, the promenade, the encounter and the meditation. The roof, taking advantage of the excellent solar exposure as well as the surrounding sites, arouses as a city’s balcony. I participated in the present project during the month of September 2011. The fact that this is a project with a different setting - competition -, leads to a more limited timing, making it a more intense process, and in this case, the involvement of almost all members of the atelier. My participation regards the section drawings and also its graphical treatment. The fact that I worked in this project contributed to the understanding of the approach in, reminding me also the existence of the conceptual scale as a first response towards a determined reality. Other pertinent question regards to the fact that I integrated a larger team, being aware of the needed management of people and resources.

The architect Patrícia Cabaço has collaborated in our office from November 2009 to September 2011. During this period she has participated in the following projects: Requalification of the Access from Baixa to the S. Jorge Castle , Lisboa, Portugal Surveying, Planning and Detailing Bastos Gomes House, Lisboa, Portugal Detailing Ventura House, Sintra, Portugal Detailing New Complexe de la Gare Sud CFF du Sierre, Sierre, Switzerland Competition
Patrícia had the opportunity to participate in different phases of several projects. Acquired competencies since the Surveying phase and Planning, to the Detail Design, having equally dealt with the several subjects that compose a project and its integration with Architecture. Throughout all phases, Patrícia showed enthusiasm, rapid capacity to learn and commitment in the realization of the given tasks.
In result, Patrícia became an important member of our office. The contribution given throughout the Detailing projects, in which she participated, was of great use because of the pragmatic and rigorous way she performed her tasks. The opportunity to develop these projects allowed her to deepen not only the technical and construction knowledge, but also to acquire autonomy and critical thinking in the appreciation of different situations and questions regarding the architecture project.
We would like to thank Patrícia for her contribution and dedication to our office and wish her success for the future.
