First United Methodist Church Endowment Funds 2016 Annual Report
Guard the good treasure entrusted to you. 2 Timothy 1:14
Message From The Pastors REVS. LAURIE AND GARY HALLER Senior Pastors of Queen Isabella; who obtained permission and blessings for the voyage from the pope; who was the vicar of Jesus Christ; who was the son and heir of Almighty God; who made Louisiana.”
A New York law firm was seeking to settle an estate when they discovered that the estate owned a piece of property in Louisiana. An attorney in the New York law firm wrote an attorney in New Orleans, asking him to do a title search and give a title opinion on the property. In a few days, the title opinion tracing the title all the way back to 1803 was received in New York. The New York attorney wrote back to his colleague in New Orleans, suggesting that there might be some litigation in the case, and he would prefer to have a better opinion, one that traced the title back to an earlier date than 1803. Here is what the attorney in New Orleans wrote back to the law firm in New York: “Gentleman: With reference to your request that the title be traced back beyond 1803, I submit the following information: In the year 1803, the Louisiana territory was acquired by the United States of America by purchase from the Republic of France; who, in turn, had acquired title from the Spanish crown by conquest; who in turn had acquired title by the discovery of a Genoese sailor by the name of Christopher Columbus; who sailed under the authority

That title search is a reminder that God is the owner of all things. Whatever you think you “own,” trace it back and you’ll find the One who made it and truly has title to it. Our danger arises when we believe we own anything – it’s almost a guarantee that we are owned by it. When we acknowledge God as the Giver of every good gift, we will heed those words found in Luke’s gospel, “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required.” Much has been given to us as a church and as individual members. Our church has been entrusted with a great ministry. It encompasses a tremendous missions program, vital ministries to children and youth, an enriching music program, and a deep concern for others. Our Endowment exists to meet the challenge and opportunity of sustaining vital ministry and excellent facilities. As individuals and families, we have been entrusted with abundant resources. We need but remember who is the ultimate and unconditional owner and giver of all we have. Only so will we able to respond freely and joyfully to the needs here. Friends, as you peruse this Annual Report, give thanks to God for what previous generations and present members have made possible! Remember the One who made all things and provides you with all you have. Then be grateful for all that God has placed in your hands. Gary & Laurie Haller Senior Pastors

The Case for the Endowment “And
Isaac dug again the wells of water which had been dug in the days of Abraham his father…” Genesis 26:17 Leave something behind that is better than what you found. FUMC has a clear mission and vision, which can be broken down into current (year-to-year) and long-term projects and needs. For the church to be successful in its goal of meeting all of these needs, it must have adequate resources and thoughtful, prudent planning, both now and in the future. This is where the annual budget and the Endowment come into play. Our annual budget is prepared after careful analysis of current needs and revenues. But what about our long-term needs? These needs are at the heart of a healthy, sustainable church that is financially strong today and long into the future. A large and growing Endowment is essential for the church to make commitments and to plan for its future. It is the best way to ensure that the church is a good steward of the gifts entrusted to it, thus keeping it vital and financially strong for years to come. In this respect, we should view each generation of church members as temporary stewards of a larger, long-term vision mission and legacy. We all live on the shoulders of previous generations at the church, and we all benefit from the buildings and other assets built by previous generations. So the question is: will we be part of a generation that only benefits from previous gifts, or will we find a way to leave a lasting legacy? Here are some significant benefits of a larger Endowment: • Higher income, which can be used to fund operating deficits in weak years. Think of this as a “rainy day fund.” • Both principal and interest of the Endowment can fund expanded ministries beyond the capability of the current annual budget. • “Emergency Fund” that can be used when one-time opportunities outside the current budget present themselves. • The Endowment is the church’s readily available (i.e., without selling assets or embarking on a campaign) “equity.” This equity will be a major underwriting factor if the church applies for a bank loan. The option of bank financing at low rates offers greater flexibility if/when the church seeks to fund projects. In summary, a large, healthy and growing Endowment can mean the difference between just “getting by” and the security of bringing our church’s mission and vision to life for generations to come. Message From The Chair JEFF HOCKMAN Current Chairperson
Last year we promised we would be expanding the opportunities to support the Endowment, and we have. In 2016 the Endowment Committee will sponsor a dinner for the entire church to highlight the work of the Endowment and plant the seeds of the many giving options to support the Endowment. The Endowment funds are not used to support the church’s operating budget. We provide grants to expand our mission beyond the annual budget, inspire innovative ministries, and care for our excellent campus facilities. The more the fund grows, the greater impact Birmingham First can have in our community and the world. The accomplishments of the Endowment Fund would not be possible without the support of our donors and the dedication of the committee members. Ron Reynolds, Jeff Richardson and Dick Shirley’s terms have ended and we thank them for their hard work. We welcome to the committee Ann Littleton and Jane Pettibone. The Endowment Fund Committee hopes you find this Annual Report useful in understanding its benefits to the church. We look forward to the continued support from the congregation in our commitment to the future generations of our church. Yours in Christ, 7

People often ask me if there is a “minimum” amount to be a part of the Legacy Society. There is no minimum. As long as you have a gift of any amount for FUMC in your estate plans, and you notify us, we welcome you to the growing list of witnesses who have pledged their giving in the future for FUMC. It’s not about the amount, but the intent. If you give annually to the church, why not give one final gift when settling your estate plans?
