n behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Mexican American Bar Founda on, it is my honor to welcome you to our 2020 Gala celebra on, marking the 29th anniversary of this Founda on. In 2020, this Founda on will award over $226,000 in the form of 28 scholarships to first and second year law students as well as a bar s pend to a gradua ng law student for the purpose of financing the ever increasing cost of a ending law school and si ng for the bar examina on. We are delighted to support, honor and celebrate yet another outstanding group of La no law students as they pursue their dreams and careers in the law. These young scholars represent the future of our profession and community. Each scholar has a unique personal history and experience; many have overcome significant odds. All reflect the very best of our profession, and despite the rigors of law school, they generously serve and support the community, their families and their fellow law students. I encourage you to review their inspiring personal profiles in the following pages of this program. We are also very proud to recognize our dis nguished honorees, Elizabeth Atlee, Christopher David Ruiz Cameron, and Oportun, as well as our master of ceremonies, Mauricio Mendoza, for the important roles they have played in the community, for the support they have given to this Founda on, and for suppor ng the image, professional achievement, and accomplishments of La nos throughout our community, and in the na on at large. I know you will enjoy hearing from these dis nguished individuals. Tonight, we also thank our donors. SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS MEXICAN AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION 2020 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ABRAHAM E. BRAN LOCKE LORD LLP SCHOLAR Southwestern Law School, Class of 2021 Abraham is a first-genera on college graduate with B.A.’s in Economics and Spanish from Tu s University and a former immigra on paralegal. In law school, he externed at the Los Angeles Immigra on Court, volunteers with Al Otro Lado, and is a part of Southwestern’s Appellate Li ga on Clinic where he is li ga ng an immigra on case before the Ninth Circuit. He is pursuing a J.D./M.B.A. dual-degree with the Drucker School of Management and a career in human rights civil and appellate li ga on. Abraham serves as Southwestern’s Student Bar Associa on President, Co-President to their La no Law Students Associa on, and an Editor to their Law Review. ANDY DE LA CRUZ ENRIQUE & KATHRYN HOLGUIN/ALTAMED Southwestern Law School, Class of 2022 HEALTH SERVICES SCHOLAR Andy was raised by Mexican immigrant parents and is the first in his family to a end law school. A er earning his B.A. in Poli cal Science from UCLA in 2017, Andy worked for the non-profit agency Neighborhood Legal Services. It was during this me that he realized the tremendous impact he could have as an a orney. Andy was selected as a 2020 MABA Federal Judicial Externship Program recipient and externed under Chief Judge Philip S. Gu errez during his 1L summer. As a rising 2L, Andy is mo vated to help increase representa on in areas of the law where La nos are historically underrepresented. ANTHONY SALVADOR PÉREZ CEDARS-SINAI SCHOLAR UC Irvine School of Law, Class of 2021 Anthony Perez is a third-year law student at UC Irvine. He is the son of Mexican immigrants from Sinaloa and Jalisco. Anthony studied Spanish and Portuguese literature at Middlebury College. In law school, Anthony has externed for two federal judges: the Hon. Rozella A. Oliver of the Central District of California and the Hon. Kim M. Wardlaw of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. This past summer, Anthony was a summer law clerk at Aleshire & Wynder LLP, a private law firm that specializes in municipal law. Prior to law school, he worked for Public Counsels’ Immigrants’ Rights Project. ARIEL WILBUR LOCKE LORD LLP SCHOLAR Southwestern Law School, Class of 2021 Raised in a hardworking, Mexican-African American household, Ariel strove to set an example for her three younger siblings. She worked as a judicial intern throughout high school and college for five summers at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse, which inspired her to become a lawyer. She is currently a rising 3L at Southwestern Law School. A er volunteering at expungement clinics last summer, she became extremely interested in criminal law. This summer, she is comple ng a clerkship at the Los Angeles County District A orney’s Office in the Preliminary Hearing Unit. BRENDAN E. NAFARRATE ACHIEVING AMERICA FAMILY Southwestern Law School, Class of 2021 FOUNDATION SCHOLAR Raised by immigrant grandparents, Brendan pursued higher educa on to create opportuni es for immigrant families like his. Following gradua on from Cal Poly Pomona he served domes c violence survivors in their family law and immigra on ma ers. Inspired by using the law to empower others he decided to become an a orney and is now a 3L at Southwestern Law School. He has con nued serving his community by volunteering with the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Immigra on Unit, the Community Lawyering Clinic, and the Na onal Lawyers Guild’s Immigra on Commi ee. Over the summer he interned at the Execu ve Office of Immigra on Review in Northern Virginia.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS CARMEN IZQUIERDO-OLIVA OPORTUN, INC. SCHOLAR Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, Class of 2021 Carmen was raised by immigrant parents. As the youngest of five, she was the first in her family to a end college and earned a B.A. from Pepperdine in 2015. As a 3L, she is the Na onal La nx Law Student Associa on Treasurer (and past President), Na onal Lawyers Guild Secretary, Trial Team Member, and Law Review Literary Cita on Editor. Carmen is also the MABA Vice-Chair for Pepperdine and was a Summer Associate at Cozen O’Connor this summer. This fall, Carmen will extern at LAFLA and work on asylum cases. Carmen hopes to con nue assis ng undocumented immigrants through pro-bono opportuni es a er law school. CHRISTOPHER A. GALEANO MEXICAN AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION UCLA School of Law, Class of 2021 ENDOWMENT FUND SCHOLAR Christopher’s path to becoming an a orney was solidified a er he used the law as a tool to hold an unscrupulous notorio accountable for defrauding his family and others. A er gradua ng from UC Irvine, he worked as a Legisla ve Advocate with the California Immigrant Policy Center in Sacramento. Christopher is a rising 3L enrolled in the Public Interest Law and Policy and Cri cal Race Studies Programs at UCLA School of Law. At UCLA he has interned with the Na onal Day Labor Organizing Network, volunteered with Basta, Inc., externed for the Hon. Philip S. Gu errez., and served as Recruitment Chair for the La nx Law Students Associa on. This summer he is a Legal Fellow with the UCLA Vo ng Rights Project. CHRISTOPHER PINEDA USC LATINO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLAR USC Gould School of Law, Class of 2022 Christopher Pineda grew up in an o en overcrowded, but always cozy, Salvadoran household in South Los Angeles. In 2016, he earned a degree in Public Policy and American ins tu ons from Brown University. Currently, Chris is a rising 2L at USC Gould School of Law, where he serves as the co-president of the First-Genera on Professionals student group, as well as a member of the La no Law Students Associa on. Chris spent this past summer at HBO as a legal and labor rela ons intern which reaffirmed his desire to break barriers as a La nx professional in both the entertainment and legal industries. DIANA HERNANDEZ OPORTUN, INC. SCHOLAR Loyola Law School, Class of 2021 Diana was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. She immigrated to the United States at age 14. A er gradua ng from UC Santa Barbara with majors in Psychology, Sociology and La n American and Iberian Studies, Diana was mo vated to pursue a career figh ng for the rights of underserved communi es. During law school, she has volunteered with nonprofit organiza ons in the areas of educa on law, consumer protec on, healthcare and disability law. She also assists clients as a cer fied law student in Loyola’s Juvenile Innocence and Fair Sentencing Clinic. This summer Diana clerked with Disability Rights California, the largest disability rights group in the na on. DORIS ALVAREZ-REYES LATHAM & WATKINS SCHOLAR Loyola Law School, Class of 2021 Doris was raised by a hard-working single mother. She is a first-genera on college graduate with a B.A. in Poli cal Economy and Legal Studies from UC Berkeley. Before law school, Doris worked as an immigra on paralegal. Last year, Doris served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Richard L. Fruin and par cipated in the State Income Tax Clinic at Loyola Law, where she assisted taxpayers with their administra ve appeals. As a 3L at Loyola Law, Doris serves as Chief Research Editor for the Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review. This past summer, Doris was a summer associate at Perkins Coie.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ELISSA JOSEFINA RONQUILLO ENRIQUE & KATHRYN HOLGUIN/ALTAMED Loyola Law School, Class of 2022 HEALTH SERVICES SCHOLAR Elissa is a second-genera on Mexican-American and her family is her greatest inspira on. Her grandparents emigrated from Mexico with li le formal educa on but full of grit and hope. Her parents stressed the importance of educa on and provided her opportuni es they never had. A er gradua ng from Scripps College, Elissa worked in non-profit as an employment counselor then transi oned to recrui ng in the private sector. Elissa most recently completed an externship for the Honorable Ronald S.W. Lew and looks forward to par cipa ng in Loyola’s Collateral Consequences of Convic on Jus ce Project this fall. Elissa is the first in her family to a end law school. ERIK JIMENEZ RODRIGUEZ CENTURY HOUSING SCHOLAR UC Irvine School of Law, Class of 2021 Erik migrated to the United States from Mexico when he was six. He channels the adversity that he and his family has faced as undocumented immigrants into his advocacy. As a member of the UCI Law Immigrant Rights Clinic, Erik has helped secure the release of individuals in immigra on deten on facing COVID-19 risk. This summer, Erik is interning at Hadsell Stormer Renick & Dai LLP, where he has con nued to secure the release of incarcerated individuals detained at LA County Jail, who also face COVID-19 risk. Erik is a student leader of the La nx Law Student Associa on and serves as MABA’s co-Vice-Chair for UCI Law. GABRIELA PEREZ COMCAST NBCUNIVERSAL TELEMUNDO Loyola Law School, Class of 2022 ENTERTAINMENT LAW SCHOLAR Gabriela Perez grew up in the sister ci es of Calexico, CA and Mexicali, Mexico. This transna onal experience is a major reason why she pursued higher educa on. She received a B.A. in Poli cal Science from UCLA in 2017. She is now a 2L at Loyola Law School and is interested in pursuing a career in entertainment law. She also serves as Co-Admission and Reten on Chair for La Raza de Loyola, Co-Chair for Na onal Lawyers Guild, Co-Advocacy Chair for Outlaw, and Staffer for the Entertainment Law Review. This summer she externed for a Federal Judge in the Southern District of California. GABRIELA RODRIGUEZ EDISON INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR USC Gould School of Law, Class of 2021 Gabriela’s passion for becoming an a orney began when she no ced that many a orneys did not look like her. As the first in her family to a end law school she is commi ed to bringing diversity to the field. She looks forward to becoming a mentor and resource for other law students. Gabriela received her B.A. in Sociology from UCLA and is interested in pursuing employment/business li ga on. At USC Gould Gabriela is involved in the La no Law Students Associa on, Women’s Law Associa on, the Review of Law and Social Jus ce and the Media on Clinic. IDALMIS VAQUERO SIDLEY AUSTIN LLP SCHOLAR UCLA School of Law, Class of 2021 Idalmis’ mo va on to a end law school stems from her experience living in Boyle Heights next to industry and high truck traffic. She plans to use her law degree to advance environmental jus ce for her community and other Black and La nx communi es in Los Angeles. She is a first-genera on college graduate with a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Wellesley College. Prior to law school, Idalmis was a li ga on assistant at Earthjus ce’s Los Angeles office. During law school, Idalmis served as a studentdelegate at the United Na ons COP 25 in Madrid, Spain following climate nego a ons and has externed at Communi es for a Be er Environment, the Center for Biological Diversity, and East Yard Communi es for Environmental Jus ce.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS JASMINE CHAVEZ LATINO PROSECUTORS FOUNDATION SCHOLAR Southwestern Law School, Class of 2021 Jasmine obtained her bachelor’s degree from U.C. Berkeley. She then earned her paralegal cer ficate before beginning work at the Law Office of Steve Lopez, where she works to this day. As a rising 4L in the part- me evening program, she has spent the past two years as an advocate for the Trial Advocacy Honors Program and par cipated in the Children’s Rights Clinic. She also externed for the District A orney’s Complex Child Abuse Division and hopes to one day become a District A orney herself. Jasmine strives to be a role model for her daughter and all La nas who dare to dream. KEILA MAGAÑA EDISON INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR Southwestern Law School, Class of 2021 Keila is the proud daughter of Salvadoran and Honduran immigrants. Keila credits her desire to pursue civil rights law to her parents, whose struggles mo vated her to become a resource for the community. Keila received a B.A. in Poli cal Science from UCLA, and she is now a 3L at Southwestern Law School. Keila had the opportunity to extern for the Hon. S. James Otero last summer as part of MABA’s Federal Judicial Externship Program. This summer, Keila is clerking at the California A orney General’s Office. Keila hopes to work at the California A orney General’s Office or a public interest non-profit. KIMBERLY HERNANDEZ CEDARS-SINAI SCHOLAR Southwestern Law School, Class of 2022 Kimberly is a first-genera on college graduate raised by a single mother in Sylmar, CA. Before gradua ng from UCSB with a double major in Chicana/o Studies and Feminist Studies, Kimberly volunteered at St. George Family Youth Center. At UCSB, Kimberly partook in a 13-hour sit-in protest for a fight against sexual assault and realized her passion to advocate for others. As a rising 2L, she externed under the Honorable Dean D. Pregerson for the Central District Court and is currently Secretary for Tax Law Society and Vice President for the Women’s Law Associa on. Kimberly wants to become a civil rights a orney with a focus on women’s rights and family law. She hopes to become a role model for La na/os that come from at-risk neighborhoods and be the example that “si se puede!” MAYRA LOPEZ AHMANSON FOUNDATION SCHOLAR UC Irvine School of Law, Class of 2022 Mayra grew up in a working-class, immigrant neighborhood of South East Los Angeles. She received her B.A. in History from UC Riverside (2013) and her M.A. in History from San Diego State (2015). A erward, Mayra worked as the Legal Inves gator and Researcher with the ACLU of San Diego and designed a U.S.-Mexico border inves ga ons program, helped establish the San Diego Migrant Family Shelter, and assisted in challenging the administra on’s prac ce of separa ng families at the border. Mayra is a rising 2L at UC Irvine School of Law and plans to work on immigrant rights and border issues a er law school. MEGAN LORAINNE WILLIS MEXICAN AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION Southwestern Law School, Class of 2021 ENDOWMENT FUND SCHOLAR Megan Willis is a first-genera on college graduate. She has spent her life advoca ng for vic ms of crimes and her dream is to prosecute crimes against children. Before star ng law school, Megan became a state-cer fied Rape Crisis Counselor and volunteered as an on-call rape-crisis hotline advocate. Megan’s volunteer legal experience includes veteran services, family law, children’s rights, and Southwestern’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Clinic. This year, Megan is the Co-Vice President of the La no Law Students Associa on, Compe ons Chair for the Trial Advocacy Honors Program, and is currently a paid summer law clerk for the L.A. County District A orney’s Office.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS NANCY LANDAVERDE STEVEN ESPINOZA IMMIGRATION SCHOLAR Loyola Law School, Class 2021 Nancy is the daughter of Salvadoran immigrants who fled the civil war and did everything possible to ensure their daughters grew up empowered to take on the world. It is because of her family that Nancy is working to become an immigra on a orney that will serve the very community that has helped her thrive. At Loyola Law School, Nancy has par cipated in the Loyola Immigrant Jus ce Clinic, HNBA Moot Court Team, and served on the Immigra on Law Society board. This summer, she clerked with Public Counsel’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, where she gained experience in direct services and federal immigra on li ga on. PAULINA NUNEZ SOUTHWESTERN LAW SCHOOL SCHOLAR Southwestern Law School, Class of 2021 Raised in an immigrant household in Oxnard, California, Paulina has always believed in the importance of being a public servant. She is a first genera on graduate from California Lutheran University with a B.S. in Criminal Jus ce, B.A. in Spanish, and a Masters in Public Policy and Administra on. During law school she has been involved in volunteer work with the Small Claims Clinic and the LA Expungement Clinic. During the summer she was a volunteer law clerk in LADA’s Convic on Review Unit. This fall she will be comple ng her second year in a two year accelerated program at Southwestern Law School. ROSEMARY C. TAMAYO COMCAST NBCUNIVERSAL TELEMUNDO Southwestern Law School, Class of 2021 ENTERTAINMENT LAW SCHOLAR Rosemary was born in Miami, Florida and raised in Colombia by a single mother. She is the first in her family to graduate high school and graduated cum laude with a B.A. in psychology from UCLA. Rosemary’s perseverance led her to be a California ChangeLawyers Scholar, a MABF Comcast NBCUniversal Telemundo Entertainment Law Scholar, and an HNBA Intellectual Property Ins tute Scholar. She is a rising 3L at Southwestern interested in corporate and entertainment law and recently finished her summer posi on at Donaldson + Callif. Rosemary strives to be a role model for young La nas who are interested in law. SELENE ESTRADA-VILLELA AHMANSON FOUNDATION SCHOLAR Loyola Law School, Class of 2023 Selene is a second-year evening student and the proud daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico and Guatemala. At seventeen, Selene le her hometown in the Central Coast to a end UCLA and pursue a degree in Interna onal Development and Sociology. Selene con nued her studies at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs where she earned a Master’s Degree in Social Welfare. Since 2015, Selene has been a social worker with child protec ve services helping families navigate the dependency system. This Fall, Selene will par cipate in Loyola’s Civil Rights Li ga on Prac cum which includes an externship with a premiere civil rights organiza on. SHARON PATRICIA RAMIREZ CEDARS-SINAI SCHOLAR Loyola Law School, Class of 2021 As a child of undocumented immigrants from Guatemala, Sharon was ins lled with the desire to pursue higher educa on and stand up for her community. Now a third year at Loyola Law School, she serves as the Co-President of La Raza de Loyola and CoLead Coordinator of the Young Lawyers Program. She also serves as a clinical student for the Loyola Juvenile Jus ce Clinic, represen ng children and adolescents in juvenile delinquency court. Sharon con nues as a clerk for The Cochran Firm, working on sexual assault, personal injury, and wrongful death ma ers. Sharon aspires to be a public defender and civil li gator.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS SOFIA PEDROZA AKIN GUMP SCHOLAR UCLA School of Law, Class of 2021 Sofia Pedroza is a 3L at UCLA Law. Born and raised in Southern California, she is a fierce advocate for first-genera on students, especially students of color. With a Master’s degree in sociology, she is a strong advocate for centering the experiences of women of color in law and academia. During the Summer of 2020, she externed for Administra ve Judge Louis Garcia in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Federal Hearings Unit. This year she is working primarily with UCLA’s La nx Law Students, the Women’s Law Journal, the Law Review, and various mentorship programs at the law school. STEPHANIE SANDOVAL GIBSON, DUNN & CRUTCHER LLP SCHOLAR Loyola Law School, Class of 2022 Stephanie was born in Tijuana, Mexico and moved to San Diego when she was 13. Her passion for prac cing law derives from her family’s struggle in pursuing legal immigra on status. Now a 2L at Loyola Law School, she serves on the execu ve board for La Raza De Loyola and the Na onal Lawyers Guild. This summer, Stephanie was a summer associate at Hogan Lovells and a Leadership Council on Legal Diversity scholar. In the fall, she will extern for the Honorable Dolly Gee. Stephanie strives to empower young La nx pursuing higher educa on as a mentor and ac ve advocate. YVANA BUSTAMANTE GIBSON, DUNN & CRUTCHER LLP SCHOLAR USC Gould School of Law, Class of 2021 As a first-genera on Peruvian American, Yvana’s inspira on to become an a orney is derived from her awareness of the sacrifices her parents made in leaving Peru to build a life in this country. A er gradua ng from CSUF with a B.A. in Business Administra on, Yvana went on to a end USC Law. Throughout law school, she has been an ac ve member of La no Law Students Associa on and OUTLaw. This summer, Yvana worked as a summer associate at Gibson Dunn, & Crutcher LLP. A er law school, she hopes to use her posi on to empower vulnerable communi es and amplify the voices of the La no community at large.

iz Atlee oversees CBRE’s robust global Ethics and Compliance Program. She ensures the program is effec ve at encouraging employees, vendors and stakeholders comply with CBRE’s Standards of Business Conduct and RISE values. Her role includes iden fying risks and preven ng, detec ng and correc ng noncompliance with laws, regulatory requirements, policies and procedures to safeguard CBRE’s reputa on and brand. She also has oversight of CBRE’s Global Data Protec on and Privacy Program, which ensures compliance with domes c and interna onal privacy regula ons. She also is very involved in CBRE’s data protec on and governance policies. Liz was previously CBRE’s Deputy General Counsel of Global Li ga on, Employment, and Intellectual Property and Data. In this capacity, she managed a broad range of li ga on and business issues around the world. Liz oversaw more than 300 ac ve cases each year, reported on legal ma ers to insurers, senior managers and the board of directors, and developed and managed the company’s e-discovery and li ga on hold protocols. Liz was also responsible for protec ng CBRE’s technology growth Liz was recognized as one of the 50 Most Powerful La nas in Corporate America, according to the Associa on of La no Professionals for America (ALPFA) in collabora on with Fortune magazine. Liz is a graduate of Yale University where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Poli cal Science, and the University of Southern California where she obtained her Juris Doctorate. She is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Associa on, board member and treasurer of Hispanas Organized for Poli cal Equality (HOPE), member of the USC Gould School of Law Board of Councilors, member of the Associa on of Corporate Counsel, and guest lecturer at USC Gould School of Law.

C
hristopher David Ruiz Cameron is the Jus ce Marshall F. McComb Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School, where he teaches and writes about the Law of the Workplace, serves as faculty advisor to the La nx Law Students Associa on, and mentors future lawyers by drawing on 30 years of experience as a faculty member and 17 years of experience as a law school administrator. Since 1997, Professor Cameron has been ac ve as a trustee or official of the Mexican American Bar Founda on. From 1998 to 2016, he served as Gala Director. On his watch, the MABF awarded over $2.3 million in the form of 404 scholarships given to 336 individual law students. It also started the Endowment that helps sustain the Founda on’s giving today. As a scholar, Professor Cameron has authored or co-authored two books, nine book chapters or supplements, and 28 law review ar cles published by the California Law Review, UCLA Law Review, and other leading journals. He is an Elected Member or Fellow of three learned socie es: the American Law Ins tute, the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, and The Labor Law Group. As a labor rela ons expert, Professor Cameron has over 25 years of experience as an arbitrator and civil service hearing officer and is a Member of the Na onal Academy of Arbitrators. He currently serves as Chair of the Los Angeles County Employee Rela ons Commission, the agency responsible for adjudica ng labor rela ons ma ers affec ng employees working for the na on’s second largest municipal government. Professor Cameron is also Past Secretary of the American Bar Associa on’s Sec on of Labor and Employment Law, the highest posi on a neutral can hold in that organiza on. A er serving as law clerk to the late Judge Harry Pregerson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Professor Cameron prac ced labor law in Southern California. He is a graduate of UCLA, where he was editor-in-chief of the Daily Bruin, and Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.
