The Game That Ties You Up in Knots

I. Shuffle a deck of cards three times. II. Place the deck in a stack and flip cards from the top. When you reach a face card, stop. III. If the face card is a king, use a royal portrait of a king as the image. If the face card is a queen, use a royal portrait of a queen. If the face card is a jack, use a royal portrait of a jack. IV. Flip the next card, if it is red the image will be placed upon half of a spread. If the card is black, the image will be placed full bleed across the spread. V. On half–image spreads, flip a card. If it is black, use the number on the card to indicate the number of times an element of the photo is repeated. VI. If you flip two cards in a row with the same number, or two cards in a “sandwich,” then use an advertising slogan as the main text of the spread. The typography should dominate the page and be attributed to a member of a royal family. VII. On the spreads determined by doubles and sandwiches, the caption should be centered on the spread.
