About This Book This Process Book was created for the purpose of completing the ART130A-FA14 Final and to show all my peers the work I have created and completed in the above said class of the 2014 Fall Semester at St. Norbert College. The contents found within this book are my own original works of art (except for the picture of Andy Warhol under the “Master Artist” section) and may not be used by any other party but my own without obtaining my consent first. That being said, outlined in the next few pages are the steps I took, as well as my thought process, while completing the semester’s art work. My work is not always beautiful or in any way perfect, but I put many hours, sweat, and blood (metaphorically speaking) into it and am happy to call it my own. If any questions arise within yourself while reading the contents of this book, then you are welcome to find the answers within yourself as well. If need be, you may seek me out for my unprecedented advice and guidance. Thank you for interest and please enjoy my very first semester in design! - Patrick O’Connor_ .

D*School Crash Course_

This project was meant to be a warm up to the class, to get the “creative juices” flowing. It consisted of prompts to draw and questions that encourages one to think about one’s self, such as “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” The process took just under an hour to complete. Little did I know that this would be my shortest project..._

For this project the class was given a sheet with questions and purposefully unclear directions and was asked to interview a fellow student within the room at the time. So, I paired up with a neighboring classmate. I followed the instructions given to me by my professor, asking Jordan questions giving and receiving presents, how he felt about it, etc. Eventually, from the questions that I had asked during the interview, I determined that my neighbor preferred giving presents rather than receiving, that he had memorable gifts that he gave to loved ones, and that he generally cared about others, especially his friends and family. However, I had no idea where this class project was headed. Then my professor told us that we had to use the resources in the room to create a gift for our partners and that we only had a few minutes to do it! I quickly grabbed whatever I could find: a foam board, some wire, a pencil... But I had no idea what I could make. How could I help my partner connect with those he loved around him? Then it hit me! With the remaining time, I quickly fashioned up a model of a piece of technology that everyone uses to connect with friends and family, something that was small but valuable. After creating the gift, I presented to my partner a basic, yet stylish, flip phone (pictured below), set to search his friends for instantaneous connection! I was pleased with my creation._

The words that I chose to abstractly represent were “Terror,” “Stability,” “Abundance,” and “Scarcity.” From the list provided, these were the words that stood out the most and the ones that I believed I could accurately portray through dots and lines.

This project was definitely one of my favorites to do. It was very abstract and challenging, yet powerful. The assignment was to pick a word from a provided list and portray that word in abstract art using only black or gray dots and lines on a small white square. The first step was to create countless iterations of my design. So I began sketching the ideas I had in my book. Some of these first iterations are placed on this page._

00000111

The next step of the process was to take the iterations that I liked from each word best and refine them to make them even better. The purpose of the first step was to get as many ideas of combinations and patterns down on paper, the second step was meant to make the artist focus on one idea, to pile on even more iterations, and to perfect it. The results of this refinement are pictured below._

Expressive Text_

After creating numerous iterations for each word, I found what I felt to be my best interpretation of each word. I cut out the black and gray dots and lines, laid them out according to my final iterations, glued them in place on a white square, then glued the square on black foam board. The four finished products are displayed above and labeled with the word that the piece represents._ 00001001

00001010

The next step of the project was choosing one word to portray in our work. We were given a list of words to choose from and immediately after reading the list, one word in particular stuck out. “Melt.” After choosing the word, we then had to start creating iterations for that word only. The examples on this page are what I made for this portion of the project._

The next topic given to the class was the Expressive Text project. We first had to think of any word we wanted and draw out the “feeling” of that word but still writing out the actual word in that work. Some of the examples I first drew are displayed here on this page._

00001011

00001100

The last step to the Expressive text project was making our drawings a reality and creating the final product of our words. The instructions allowed us to use unusual means to create the pieces if we wished. We could also use traditional means too. So, I thought outside the box and decided to use materials such as chocolate, matches, and ink. The results are placed below for viewing._

Object Iterations_

00001101

00001110

This project began with us drawing faces and images without using our eyes! We were told to focus on what was in front of us and not what was being drawn on the paper. At first, this proved to be very difficult but also artistically rewarding in an abstract way. In addition to a few classmates’ faces, I blindly drew a picture of a monkey and a few wrenches. Here are a few of the results._

The next part of the project we were told to pick one movable object or animal. I chose the Atlas Beetle for my piece. We were then told to create various types of works to portray this animal. Some of these types of works included collages and imitations of master artists. I completed these tasks and also drew the beetle using the “blind contour” technique seen on the previous page. The results of these pieces can be found on this page. After creating these pieces, we were introduced to “InDesign,” a program we used in the computer lab. There we had to take our pieces on our object, edit and refine them, and put them all into one big collage. My final collage can be found on the following page (00010000)._

Tutorial Editorial_

Object Iterations Final_ 00010001

00010010

The next step was to write out the actual instructions for the editorial. It was not meant to be too long but had to have enough information so that the reader could successfully follow the how-to. We then had to take the images we created and add on and refine them some more. Below is how I edited the picture shown on the page to the left. I added color and delete smudges on the page._

The next project we did was the Tutorial Editorial. For this, the final outcome had to be an appealing poster that gave instructions on how to do something. It had to include artwork and text. I began to reflect on the activities that I knew how to do well. Immediately my mind went to food. It was not long until I had my mind set on creating my editorial on how to make deep dish pizza, a Chicago classic! I began sketching out iterations of possible designs and layouts for my poster. These sketches can be found above on this page._

00010100

I continued to refine and edit my images that I would use, cleaning them up in shape and color and placed them in the first draft of my editorial. The updated images can be found on this page and the first draft of the editorial can be found on the next page (00010111). After the critique given in class, I walked away with a few valuable pointers on how to improve my poster. I applied changes to my text, color, and placement of images to get the final product, which can be found on page 00011000._

Easy As

Pizza Pie

1

Put two cups of handhot water in a bowl along with two packets of fast rising yeast and a teaspoon of sugar. Let the contents sit for ten minutes or until it begins to “bubble.”

Add five to six cups of flour, one-third cup of canola oil and a pinch of salt. Begin mixing the contents with your hands until doughy. Place the dough back in the bowl, cover with a hot, damp paper towel and let t sit for forty-five minutes to an hour, or until dough has doubled in size. (HINT: Apply extra flour to hands to reduce stickiness of dough)

3

Preheat oven to 375° and separate dough evenly. Generously oil a pan with raised sides and stretch dough along bottom and up sides about an inch. Poke holes in dough with a fork so it can “breath” in the oven. Place crust in the oven for ten minutes or until crispy.

While the crust is baking, take a pound block of mozzarella cheese and cut it into thick slices. When the crust is ready, take it out, cover the bottom with the cheese and any other ingredient you would like. Then cover that with a thick layer of crushed tomatoes.

4

Spice the Pizza to your liking with garlic powder, oregano, black pepper, and crushed red pepper. Place in oven at 375° for thirty-five minutes or until chees is fully melted. When done, take the Pizza out, let it cool and cut.

Andy Warhol For this project we had to choose a “master artist” from a group. We then had to research that artist and learn about his or her life, study their art works, and create a power-point based off of what we found out. I chose the great and insane Andy Warhol. After I finished the power-point, I had to present it to the class, giving a short lecture on the life of Warhol. The powerpoint I created included some of Warhol’s famous art, like “Eight Elvises” and a rendition of his Campbell’s Soup Cans. I learned a lot about this artist and how crazy he actually was. He threw parties and hung out with a strange crowd, but he was loved by many. His art was declared “Pop-Art” and it consisted of pictures of celebrities and basic household items. Below is a picture I found on the internet of Warhol (http://www.bohemia-apartments. com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/warhol4.jpg)._

Children’s Book_

00011011

The Children’s Book was the last project of the semester. During this time, we got to partner up with a student majoring in English and they wrote a children’s short story. Being the designers, we got to illustrate that story. The story I got was titled “Busy Buzzing Bees” and it was about a single bee and its normal routines during the day. I started this project off by quickly sketching a few outlines of the spreads I had in mind and for the way I wanted to potentially draw the bees. Below are the sketches I made._

Next I began sketching the full size iterations that would eventually make it into the book. I decided to make the text handwritten instead of digital used ink to create the lettering. Above are some of these sketches._ 00011100

00011101

The next step in my process of completing this book was digitally color in each page. This took quite awhile to do but I decided to use two main colors: yellow and black. The other colors were not used very much. Some of the colored pages are displayed below. After hours of work I finally finished the project, put it all together, and successfully illustrated my very first book. The next few pages are some of my favorite sections of the book._
