PROCESS

2010/2011 Jessica Wang

For me, design process book is like a changable maze. I always constantly search and explore the way that I can go out from numerous paths. To design, those numerous paths are my initial, tentitive ideas that I try to figure out the finanal design proposal. Process book is to not only contain the documented out comes from my courses, but to include the mental workings of my idea generations and concept comprehensions. It will be my task to take a portion of the sketches, photographs, diagrams, iterations, etc. that I have generated and organize them in a cohesive manner. I edited and annotated much of this content. The following parts of this book are how I go about doing this. Critical Reading and Writing The course is about critical reading. And at the same time, I also practise how to write journal articles and the structure of outlines.

Daily Critical Reading and Writing

What it is (left) It is a creative writing book with veriaty drawing. They say I say (right) The book is full of writing templates that can improve the academic writing skills of students. Also, the book has a number of examples showing how to write an effective argument.

This week-long intensive is designed to jumpstart my critical and creative reading and writing skills within the context of a community of researchers, scholars and peers. Over the course of the week, I examined and practiced a variety of writing, reading, and conversation. Activities will be both individual and collaborative; each student will be responsible for leading a group in a short interpretive presentation and a writing project, as well as for completing short individual exercises. I tracked the presentation and project research and ideas in a sketchbook. During Karin Cope’s class, everyday Karin chose one word. I need to use the first image that came into my mind related to this word and write down 10 relating words. Karin would ask us to choose one option and think "when, who with, where, what, ect". Then, I start to use the word and write a story. This daily story help me develop the ability of english writing and quick critical thinking.

Master of Design Modelling Ideas This intensive course employs visual thinking and design writing as a method for refining my thesis/practice idea for postgraduate study. It allowed students to articulate the thought visually and build the idea by using diagrams that were being developed everyday. The course had a number of exercises that showed the process of developing an idea and how to express these processes in a 3D model. The course helped to interpret and use what was learned to write a clear thesis abstract.

Flow of 4 day for fifth exhibition Day 1: We took around one hour to think and work individually generating diagrams to explore our thesis/ practice idea. I used a large piece of paper to do the “quick & dirty” exercise. Because there is no expectation that the diagram be a refined or finished visual work, I can be reflective and mindful. It helped me a lot to explore what I didn’t know what about thesis. Day 2: Marlin Ivey took a presentation about Contextual Search and Review: Finding, Understanding and Using New Information. After presentation, I started to think more, don’t limit my mind in one area because Marlin Ivey said we don’t need to afraid be lost, it will make you find a better way. Also we went to library to find journals and periodicals that we are interest Day 3: we speak to our diagram and take approximately five minutes to tell the story of our thesis idea. Then we watched the slide presentation of 3D models as a way of exploring the structure of a thesis paper and did 3D model. Day4: I prepare the small exhition for the fifth day.

3D model of project Modeling the thesis idea and spread the thought to show in sample way how the researcher was thinking and what the outcome of this research was. My model use letter of green(my thesis key idea)with long white empty paper space to represent mountains and one exit way. It starte from a higher mountain representing a great deal of genernal idea and it narrows down and smaller to reach the last lower mountain, and in the end I will find outcome in exit.

PROCRESS BOOK 2010/2011- Jessica Wang

Green design, also named sustainable design, ecology design, comes from rethink of people about the destruction of the environment and ecology cause by modern technology. It shows the regression of the moral and social responsibility of designers. Design create a modern lifestyle and living environment, but also accelerates the consumption of natural resources, energy, and tremendously has damaged the Earth's ecological balance. More and more people paid attention on it. However there is no denying that China's green design has just started, there are a lot of green design remains in the surface and concept that became labels of promotion. Although the significance of green design has been recognized, but what is the real green design? What is the green design standard? How to implement green design? What is the reason that restricts the development of green design?

PROCRESS BOOK 2010/2011- Jessica Wang

Green design, to a certain extent is idealism, which needs to achieve a balance between comfortable life and resource consumption; the balance of short-term economic interests and longterm environmental objectives. It is not easy. Of course, only designer cannot solve or change this issue directly. It also requires consumer conscious awareness, the laws and regulations that government make. However, I believe design can make a different, changing some behaviors. Even this change is small, it still worked. Sustainable design does involve a lot of aspects, but I will just force on finding trifles that people usually do not notice, but in fact do not difficult to do. Make a small change, hopefully can bring a big different, because penny and penny laid up will be many. Introduction People around the world started to care for their environment. The world’s climate is changing more dramatically than we would have believed even a year ago. The evidence is real, and, unless we do something now, the effects will be significant and damaging. The good news is we can do something about our changing climate. This doesn’t mean we have to suddenly change our behavior and habit, seems impossible. I believe the changes should be easy to achieve and simple to do.

Context/ Background I need to find a specific area that I want to do and which mass media I want to use. First of all, I started to read books and article that relate with sustainable, eco-psychology, and design. Significance Sustainability is now a buzzword both among professionals and scholars, because people realized we can’t live without nature. We born in nature and grew up in nature, using most natural resource are non- renewable. Some companies and manufactories have used sustainable material and skills, but how to transmit the concept that sustainability is from penny things to mass media. Outline of Enquiry What do you plan to do? Actually, I have no specific plan. I was planed to do some stickers, like small icons. They can put together to be a poster, also can be separated into different package. For example, picture 5, it can print in the package of paper, and picture 6 can print on the box of plug package. Followings are the draft of those icons.

Exercise The Balmond Dilemma

Poster In this project the main focus was on using geometric principle and applying the chosen geometric method to the students’ poster design. At the beginning, I learnt Balmond’s element exhibition was examined to show the geometric principal in his work. As example as Balmond’s element exhibition, I need to creative a poster that required a brief overview of the principle, taxonomy, and imagery. I choose Spridon as my geometric principle. It is a plane geometry consisting of an alternating sequence of equilateral and isosceles triangles that creative by Daniel Erdely in 1979. The project allowed me to understand the Spridon, and create a poster using image and text together.

However, in this exercise I was understand Balmond’s geometric principle from another way. This exercise required me to create a three-dimensional object using the same geometric principle. Also during the time that I am creating this 3D model, I should tried to find a solution for the problems.

Mapping the Object Experince The exercise focused on training students to experience a new chanllage of mapping an object. The handkerchief was the object. The task permitted to comprehend the relationship between the body and an object. Also, it required observing, logging, and analyzing information. The challenging was in finding way to put all the collecting data together in one poster. This exercise will provide an opportunity to analyze the relationship of the body to an object. The object that will be given to the student will provide the opportunity for a series of micro experiences to be catalogued, analyzed and then reflected upon.

Aims& Objectives There are many available resources telling people how to reduce their carbon footprint. However, there is very little information on how to reduce carbon emission in the context of China, with many high-rise flats that can potentially reduce individual carbon emission. As China is a big country, with limited natural resources to individual, hence many products are imported directly from overseas, we are already emitting unnecessary cabon into the atmosphere. However, there is one natural resource in China that is in abundance- people. Hence, I will like to find out how many CHinaese are really willing to go the extra mile by reducing their persinal carbon footprint. I will like to find out what are ways to help the citizens in China to reduce their carbon footprint other than having the idea of just saving money. Not forgetting the thought of showing people how somple actions can help to reduce carbon emission. Throught his project, I will also want to improve my sofeware skills as well as art direction in terms of layouts in both prints and web.

To be able to persuade the community to adopt the idea that saving energy within the household is not just saving their pockets but it is in face saving the planet at the same time. For example, taking public transport may not be as bad as they imagine (not comfortable, squeezy, no seats, etc.) and it will be benefit the enbironment. This will in turn help future generation to enjoy healthier life. Through this , I hope to let people understand the idea of living is for life and not life is for living.

Development part:

Introduction As extracted from Wikipedia (n.d.), carbon footprint is the measures of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon footprint is divided into two parts, primary footprint which is the direct emission of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuel from domestic energy consumption and transportation; secondary footprint, which is the indirect emission of CO2 from the whole lifecycle of products we use from manufacturing to decomposition (‘What is carbon footprint?’ n.d.).

Background Before hunman manage to start fire, carbon is giveb off into the atmosphere through natural process via decomposition, volcanic erption, earthquake and more. However, after human is added into the picture, releasing carbon in to the atomosphere have since sped up through human activities like burning of fossil fuels and clearing of fields and forest (Grant, Nancy S 2008,PP. 4-8). Average worldwide carbon footprint is about four tonnes and industrial nations' is 11 tonnes. Furthermore, China's average carbon footprint is 13.4 tonnes.

Finding a new awareness of the relationship between the people of China and their fresh water resources. The event happened in July 2010. The oil spill in Dalian, China brought attention to the problem of Chinese water resources. Water is such an essential natural resource that relates to diverse aspects of human life. It is not only indispensable in agricultural and industrial development, but is also implanted in the cultural and religious values of society. The development throughout human history, cultural significance, society, economic prosperity of countries and health force us to have a greater need and demand for water. As we know, although the earth's surface is covered with 70% water, the available water for human consumption is only 1%. What is even worse is that the fresh water resource is running out. UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund)/WHO (World Health Organization) revealed that already “one person in five does not have access to safe drinking water”. The same situation exists in China where the water crisis is an equally serious problem and worse than many other countries. I want to explain the problems between the people of China and I believe a lack of inactive on the part of government and large corporations to make the public aware of the importance of fresh water, the impact on the population and future generations, and to take a lead in initiating a responsible plan to protect these resources. With the growth of the Chinese population and economy, “China is the world’s biggest water user, accounting for 13 percent of the world’s freshwater consumption”. (Zijun Li, 2006). For thousands of years, the Chinese depended upon their rich water resources, but the rivers and lakes are polluted and drying up. The levels of groundwater are dropping and acid rain from serious air pollution is further adding to the problem. Although there are natural contributing factors such as diverse geography and many climate zones which have effected the distribution of water, humans, by causing the pollution and irresponsible abuse of the resource have made these effects even worse.

This course offers three projects and four exercises that draw upon and integrate the ideas developed and skills acquired. While studying in class and rethinking out of class, I always find that I am free. All opinions or definitions of projects and exercises are left open. I took a walk around Halifax, walking slower than I ever had in order to explore. In thinking about time and space, I found new ideas and understandings of design issues. At the beginning, I wondered if design has “no purpose, no direction, how could I design? However, this thought limited my approaches to visual communication design problems. Personally, I should go out often without purpose to get unexpected experiences and free my thinking in order to try new methods or disciplines. Besides, the opportunity to work on projects in group-directed teams gave me different experiences with work individually. Teamwork is important, but organizing how teamwork will be divided among the designers in the group and good time management is more important. Each group members must be responsible for the other members. Compared with individual work, teamwork separates a whole project into pieces so that each designer must work both individually and together. I found if we as a group did not plan well, teamwork take more time to finish and is harder than individual work.

This course focuses on reading and writing to have influenced and make up current discourses in design and practice. Each week I read the articles and “ reflective response of the book limited language: rewriting design. And then write a response that must analyze the article to locate its central argument, reflect on my thesis and own practice or something of interest outside of the article’s specific content. Except write a response, I also list glossary terms on Dipity timeline site for each week and do diagram on the class except presentation week. At the start, I realized this a quite difficult reading book. Not only I am unfamiliar with lots of glossary terms, but also I had limited understanding of each idea about contemporary themes that authors pull out. How can I take a specific position to reach a certain level of theoretical thinking? However, my reading speed becomes faster than before, and my understanding of article also improved. Reading and writing is useful for me, also the interdisciplinary approach that limited language mentioned give me wide insight into design and visual cultures. Does it help my thesis? I think it does. Although there is no water issue, and few sustainable designs, it is enough to enhance my reading, writing skills and ability to analyze, reflect, critique, and demonstrate theoretical thinking.

This course focuses on thesis practice. I have required three main readings: Planning the Journey: Introduction to Research in Art & Design, Ask Stupid Questions and Natural and Artificial Intelligence. I can more understand design and research after reading. Also the four times of one to one tutorials and presentations those are quite helpful to me. My thesis topic was too wide before. I dealt with sustainable design, and then change to footprint and green design, but still on the research surface. Last semester I chose the water issue. However, it is still a huge topic. After reading and tutorial, I feel I know more about what I want to do, to design. My water issue should connect with Chinese water culture. Through promote the culture understanding of ancient time and practice may lead to new concepts for future sustainable water management. In the process, seminar discussion reflect on my experience methodology, helps me to practice design skills. is harder than individual work.
