Thirty three people lost their lives as a result of the Costa Concordia disaster in January 2012. With each austere spire rising from the hallowed waters off the coast of Isola del Giglio, a person, a mother, a brother, a grandparent, a child, is remembered. The approach from the exhibition space and lighthouse technician's quarters on the isle, an almost pilgrimage. A platform just below the surface allows visitors to seemingly glide above the sea and the tragedy. Below the waves and the platform, tidal turbines capture the power of the Mediterranean to keep the light and warning of the victims'’ remembrance shining brightly.

Collectively the spires serve as a powerful monument to the tragedy and those lost. Individually each spire serves to establish a new paradigm for lighthouses in our technologically advanced but environmentally taxed contemporary context. 3 1 2 3 4 5 6

At the scale of the lights, the spires can begin to dematerialize such that the lights can seem to hover over the water from a distance, embodying them with a spiritual presence.

At the scale of the spires, they serve as a collective memorial to the tragedy and specifically to the 33 victims. The lights stand atop the pillars reflecting the power of the tidal waters below.

At the scale of the plaques, visitors seemingly float on top of the turquoise Tuscan waters between each spire to learn about and remember each person who lost their lives here.
