Product~Process captures a wide cross-section of the work I’ve been doing over the past several years. It speaks to my training in architecture, and the importance of having a broad range of skills as they relate to finding the best methods to accomplish the highest quality and most interesting product. Because no two processes are the same, my distinct roles in everything from design to construction management of built architectural projects has only strengthened by diverse capability. I’ve learned to be resourceful and to contact the people and fabricators that will enrich my teams in my own artistic and extracurricular work. My architectural education ignited my interest in great design, but it also elevated my awareness of the key importance of creative collaboration and a holistic multidisciplinary approach to creative concepts.

After being recruited by a pair of art students in 2010, I helped put together a team and a proposal for the Walt Disney Imagineering ImagiNations design competition that won first place in a pool of 170 worldwide submissions. I created a winning campaign poster last year in a nationwide online search to be featured on the NBC show Parks and Recreation. Working with a local public artist in 2011, we put together a proposed approach for the Nicola Formichetti pop-up shop through BOFFO Building Fashion which would use digitally fabricated elements to produce a dynamic popup retail environment. These concepts all drew strength from being artful and multidisciplinary in their approach and architectural in their critical and creative rigor. To me, art, iterative development, and collaboration are not an option but rather a necessity in all creative work. Working outside of architecture has proven to me that architects need not work in a vacuum; for the most progressive products emerge as artful concepts refined through architecturally-oriented critical thinking. I seek to continue in my career and to surround myself with imaginative multidisciplinary people that have a similar thirst for diverse, creative work. This document represents some of the varied work I’ve been involved with, highlights my high standards of quality, and offers a glimpse into my unique mindset and approach to production.

I have found practicing architecture in its current condition does not fully embrace a creative culture for the sake of progress. In other words, I’ve realized architectural work could be much more interesting if it simply embraced digital media, fashion, and art installation -much more than only buildings! For this reason I have exercised my skills outside of work in solo productions and multidisciplinary collaborations that have produced strong and interesting work. This separate design work informs by approach to architecture; my experience in architecture heightens my approach in art and mixed media.

SSIONAL ARCHITECT [+] I’m one of the youngest registered architects you will meet today. My four-year professional career thus far has been rich with unprecedented opportunity and experience for someone my age. I work very hard and design matters to me; this has given me the distinct pleasure of working for some of Arizona’s leading design architecture offices. I’ve had responsibilities, opportunities, and experiences that young designers typically do not have. I’ve worked on projects for King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, and locally on the residence of Andrew Weil, M.D., the leading national voice on integrative medicine. The mixed-use and multifamily housing projects of which I’ve been a part are changing the community and nature of Downtown Tucson, while the highest of public art, a James Turrell Skyspace, has elevated the character of a university campus. I know how to choreograph the human experience and tell a dynamic story at any scale and within any budget. This remarkable experience has only laid the foundation of the impact I plan to have going forward. I have been recruited by each of my offices for the quality for my work and my keen, level-headed character. In college one of my professors complemented my awareness, and this essential attribute of careful consideration has followed through into the way I have managed projects in both large and small offices. I understand people, business, and most importantly design. I see how great design does and will continue to shift the way we live our lives. I am a creative thinker that has been working in a specialized field, and while I may very well continue to affect the built environment, I look forward to future opportunities of surrounding myself with similarly creative minds that question the present and will shape our future.

KAFD PORTAL SPAS Will Bruder + Partners

The King Abdullah Financial District is an extensive compound currently under construction which aims to stimulate new types of business in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. The Portal Spas will designate the main entry to the district between the men’s and women’s spa buildings. Key features of the 195,000 square foot, four-level project include atria planted with Patrick Blanc green walls, and a Tessellate enclosure, an operable rain screen system developed in conjunction with Chuck Hoberman, Zahner, and the Adaptive Building Initiative (see mockup on p 23). I was able to work on multiple project components from conceptual phases through construction documents with Will Bruder + Partners. I had the privilege of developing interior, site, and structural design concepts and tracking them through construction documents. Renderings by Christoph Kaiser. JAMES TURRELL SKYSPACE Will Bruder + Partners

The new James Turrell Skyspace, Air Apparent, on the Arizona State University campus is the third Skyspace installation in Arizona, but the first of its kind in the world. Unlike the other similar pieces which bear on columns and walls, Air Apparent suspends a multi-ton steel plate from tension cables above the viewing enclosure. This system both speaks to the existing mesquite grove surrounding it, and creates a more pure surface upon which to project light and through which to view the sky. I was able to work on construction administration for the Skyspace with Will Bruder + Partners, and as assistant to photographer Matt Winquist on all project photography.

DESERT MOUNTAIN HOUSE Rob Paulus Architects

The Diamond Head Mountain Residence is a 2000 square foot custom home designed for a desert site in Picture Rocks, north of Tucson, Arizona. With a loft-style floor plan and parking below the cantilevered building, an amateur astronomer lives in the home and studies the dark Arizona sky through a telescope outside. Rob Paulus Architects completed the project between May 2009 and September 2010. ANDREW WEIL RESIDENCE Rob Paulus Architects

The Dr. Andrew Weil Residence was a complete interior and exterior renovation of a nineties Southwestern-style home in the foothills of Tucson, AZ. The strict neighborhood guidelines allowed the interior to change almost entirely, but only permitted a few careful additions of canopies, window awnings, and landscape which dramatically altered the exterior environments to create outdoor rooms. In 2013 the house won Grand Awards from Builder Magazine and Remodeling Magazine, an award by the AIA Southern AZ, and was featured in Tucson Lifestyle Magazine. Dr. Weil has also featured his home and kitchen on visits to The. Dr. Oz Show. I served as project manager for the renovation with Rob Paulus Architects, producing construction documents and coordinating construction and interior design with Baker + Hesseldenz Design. GSA OFFICE Rob Paulus Architects

The GSA Office Building in Nogales, AZ is a LEED Gold US government building completed recently on a very tight budget. Built from simple tiltup concrete panels with carefully oriented glazing, the key features are shade canopies calibrated to block the harsh Arizona sunlight. Because Nogales means walnuts in Spanish and the town has a history of native walnut groves, Rob Paulus Architects and I integrated subtle silhouettes of real walnut leaves into the plasma-cut shade screens to cast dappled light on the building and to pay homage to this legacy. I worked with Rob Paulus Architects on many building components, including the careful design and coordination of shade canopy patterns, structure, and assembly.

EMIC ARCHITECTURE [+] If the architecture industry has come to be defined as a specialist industry of primarily building design, the education of an architect is anything but single-sided in its approach to problem solving. During a five year college career I became a master laser cutter, model-builder, CNC router operator, presenter, critical thinker, problem solver, construction worker, wood and metal fabricator, and creative collaborator. I did learn about buildings and what it takes to make great architecture, but perhaps most importantly, I learned how to question everything, and how to ask the most out of any endeavor. Architecture school ignited my interest in great design, but it also elevated my awareness of the key importance of an iterative process, analog and digital testing and prototyping, and the application of a critical editorial eye to extract a project’s essence. I consider myself a multimedia creative, having mastered skills in a diverse array of drawing, fabrication, and prototyping tools. I don’t necessarily believe any one of these skills to trump another in importance, for I truly believe that each is only augmented in the way it is supplemented by the other. My architectural renderings incorporate digital media and hand-drawn graphite line work; I have fabricated multiple costumes using laser cutting and hand-fabrication processes after careful studies of the body using photography and AutoCAD technology. Any project can be strengthened by recognizing the ways to enhance it, with critical editing, fabrication and planning skills, or identifying the resources that can complement the work. I have had great success by managing and executing diverse projects in this manner and I owe this widespread set of skills to what some might call a beyond-architectural education.



DDBC 3 Design-Build Studio

The Drachman Design Build Coalition’s third low-income residence, DDBC 3, was completed over the course of two semesters by fourth and fifth year design studios. During the final semester of construction, my key focuses included framing, the design development and installation of the north and south rain screen walls, (see assembly diagram) and various finishes throughout the house. The sliding plywood door at the “flex space” was completed on a budget of only $200, using new 1/4” plywood, salvaged framing materials from the site, and reclaimed roller blade and skateboard wheels. URBAN ARID INSTITUTE Integrated Systems Studio

The Urban Arid Institute is a laboratory and exhibition building proposal designed on an urban infill lot in Downtown Tucson as part of a systems integration studio. Pulling from the adaptations and behavior of the native barrel cactus, the building includes a protective outer skin and a lush indoor-outdoor micro-climate within. Initial exercises included the development of a single 800 square foot living unit for visiting scientists with an autonomic skin system, from which the larger building developed. The building is meant to serve as a research facility for scientists visiting the Sonoran Desert, and a corresponding education center for the public.

Barrel cactus adaptations inspired the building’s assembly, layout, and systems.

DESERT DWELLING Land Ethic Studio

This 350 square-foot residence was designed very specifically for a site in the Tucson Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. The residence is split into public and private zones for energy-efficiency and an indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

VIVIENDA EXTREMA Study Abroad - Madrid

A 10 x 10 x 10 meter cube as “extreme” multi-family residences became the springboard for a massive intervention on an existing site. The cube aggregates to create a new mixed-use and affordable housing compound slotted amongst an existing apartment complex in Marseilles, France. The program for the new series of buildings is modeled after Le Corbusier’s Unite d’ Habitation, which includes condominiums, a hotel, shopping, and a public park. This was completed while on exchange at Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura at the Universidad Politécnica in Madrid.

DESERT BATH HOUSE Undergraduate Thesis

Completed in May of 2009, this study of contemporary water use in suburban southwestern US cities against historic bathing culture informed a proposal for a new suburban pool house. In this new typology, water becomes an integral part of both lifestyle and building systems through the careful control and protection of water throughout the entire site. The proposal also sought to aggregate into new type of suburban neighborhood, to seek compromise with a more water-conscious lifestyle and richer pool culture (see below). This project also served as a study in graphic representation, testing and embracing the benefits of both traditional analog and modern digital rendering methods to create clearer, diagrammatic hybrid drawings. The desert bath house was nominated for The Ronald R. Gourley Award for Design Excellence and archived for inclusion in the University of Arizona College of Architecture AIA accreditation process.

The desert bath house is aggregated to develop a new neighborhood with half of the swimming pools, water-sensitive buildings, and a bathing culture closer to rich historical precedents.

DESIGN IN TOTAL In a recent talk with Susan Saarinen, daughter of mid-century architect Eero Saarinen, I learned about her father’s passion for total design. During his career, he believed in and fought for the opportunity to design every element of one’s life, from the ashtrays and furniture to the architecture of the home, and even the overall urban design of a neighborhood. He declared everything at every scale should be designed for the enrichment of life and everyday activities. When I heard Saarinen’s position on design I realized it was simply putting into words a practice I already believed in and have been working every day to achieve. I’ve been trained in architecture; however, I don’t expect my skills as an architect should be constrained to merely designing the walls of buildings. Rather, I know how to solve problems, edit solutions, and fabricate functioning systems that integrate multiple disciplines. In today’s world, it has occurred to me that a single designer or group of designers could, and very well should, design the architecture around us, the clothes we wear, the furniture in which we sit, to even the apps we use on our mobile devices. I have found creative problem solving and critical thinking are absolutely necessary in everyday operations. Also, my sense of humor and keen selfawareness enables me to approach creative work without question, but an acute understanding of the value of great design.

Last year, after acquiring stageside tickets for a visit from artist Lady Gaga, it became clear I needed to put together a performance art piece to collaborate with the world’s leading performance artist. I fabricated three hand-painted stuffed canvas steaks that were lightweight, aerodynamic, and surprisingly lifelike and managed their safe landing on stage. She picked one up and brought it back to her piano, laughing with the crowd at the attached message asking to meat backstage. Lady Gaga called the work “very clever” and the fun interaction gained substantial popularity online. In the spirit of escaping the average, these types of multidisciplinary creative projects have come to define the way I see everyday life, as a creative landscape just begging to be rethought, reworked, and pushed to new creative heights. I don’t believe in creativity for creativity’s sake, but I do believe in creativity for the pursuit of interest, value, and societal progress. To oppose the typical is to contribute to a shift in attitude away from the acceptance of standards. I’ve found that when art is an integral part of life, life is a work of art. I have practiced diligently over the years to hone many diverse skills in order to be a strong multidisciplinary artist and creative thinker, where drawing and painting work in conjunction with my architectural critical problem solving, spatial composition, and fabrication skills to create the most interesting work.

IMAGINATIONS COMPETITION 2010

A team of three artists and I submitted Pandora’s Peak: The Race for the Voyager’s Cup to the 2010 Walt Disney Imagineering ImagiNations Design Competition. The choose-your-own-adventure style “dark ride” proposal was awarded Best in Show of over 170 submissions in June 2010 by executives at the Imagineering offices. The project, including original characters and innovative ride technology, was completed in collaboration with Jeff Leinenveber, Lane Garrison, and Bianca Kuo, students of graphic design and illustration. This project is the sole property of Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) and all rights to use these ideas are property of WDI.

This handmade leather bound “luggage” traveled alone to the WDI offices in California for the first round of competition. Because this initial presentation was not in person, I used the deployable presentation board and informative props to carefully control and choreograph the visuals and setup of the presentation even from a distance.

KNOPE 2012 POSTER 2012

The Yes We Can’t Not. Knope. campaign poster design was selected as the first place winner of an open online design competition of over 170 submissions for the Leslie Knope 2012 city council campaign. Leslie Knope is the lead character played by Amy Poehler in the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation. The poster was selected through a public voting process on the Knope 2012 website, and I prepared a humorous Campaign for the Campaign to garner online supporters through various social media websites.

GIRAFFE 2010

This twelve-foot giraffe costume was constructed of found and household materials to be lightweight and portable. It is all handmade, original construction, inspired by the work of Julie Taymor. The costume received recognition and first prize in some of Tucson and Phoenix’s largest costume contests over several years. PHOTOMONTAGE 2008 - Present

I started studying and developing photomontages during my study abroad in Europe in the spring of 2008 to better capture and represent the architecture and urban spaces of Spain, England, Ireland, and Switzerland. BOFFO BUILDING FASHION COMPETITION 2011

The ScreenScape was a proposal for a pop-up shop featuring fashion designer Nicola Formichetti, using a design logic that is not about a particular style of work, but intended to serve as a series of versatile backdrops for good design. The carefully-sculpted series of panels of varying materials present an ever-changing atmosphere, with key glimpses through interstitial slots where programming and product display occur. Galvanized steel pipes used as an affordable armature create the simple base into which the designer would insert complex products and design ideas. Nominal steel components enable a dynamic diagonal floor plan to heighten the experience as some features are presented normal to the angle of approach and others beg to be discovered behind a corner.

CLASS PHOTOS UA Architecture Class 2009

I served as creative director and co-organizer of eight photo shoots of graduating classmates in various locations around University of Arizona College of Architecture facilities, including the desert garden, college rooftop, metal shop (and waste pile), and design studios. These were gifts to our classmates and to the college faculty as our final goodbye.

PAT R I C K B R A D L E Y Patrick Bradley graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree with honors in 2009 from the University of Arizona in Tucson. Graduating magna cum laude, Patrick received the AIA Henry Adams Medal and Certificate for graduating in the top of his class, During his undergraduate studies, Patrick studied on exchange at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura at the Universidad Politécnica in Madrid, and spent a summer in central Mexico, studying Spanish and the art and architectural history of the region. Patrick volunteered for over eight years with the Ben’s Bells Project, a Tucson public art project and non-profit organization, and until recently served on the project’s board of directors. Patrick worked from 2007 to 2011 with Rob Paulus Architects in Tucson, becoming a full time junior architect and project manager in 2009. From 2011 - 2013 he worked as a junior architect at Will Bruder + Partners in Phoenix, Arizona.

This selection of work exhibits Patrick’s recent pursuits in architecture, graphics, and art, both professionally and academically. Best described as a generalist, Patrick sees value in approaching creative problems of all disciplines similarly, by applying keen logic, resourcefulness, and a rigorous process, complemented with a sense of humor to render the most interesting work. Patrick’s undergraduate thesis dealt with issues of water use and culture in the Southwestern US, and appropriately fed into his contributions on the KAFD Portal Spas in Saudi Arabia, a bath house of sorts on which he worked until April 2013. Some of his recent personal work addresses trends in mobile technology as it relates to human interaction and popular culture, and the implications and possibilities of creating multi-media and fully-integrated experiences between hand-held device, art, and architecture.
