STORY

RESTORATION

From 1939-1997, Sylvia Gray ran a series of second-hand businesses in her downtown Greensboro store, filling 3 floors with an immense surplus inventory. In 2003, her grandson and a group of artists rediscovered the abandoned store and declared nothing for sale, inviting artists from around the world to endlessly remake this world of things as a living museum.

Elsewhere’s 100-year old historic building requires restoration to keep Elsewhere going and growing. Elsehwhere is putting Greensboro on the map for contemporary creativity. A restored Elsewhere means a more sustainable operation, greater support for global artists, and more vibrant downtown Greensboro. The restoration will result in:

EVENTS

• Year-round museum operation (without any heating or cooling system Elsewhere must close every winter). • Twelve residential live/work studios for artists. • Three-floor public museum access.

Throughout the year, Elsewhere hosts First Friday openings, Thursday artist talks, Saturday tours, special workshops and presentations, dinners, parties, performances, special events and tours. Find current event listings at goelsewhere.org/events. Extravaganza - Saturday, October 17th Elsewhere’s Annual Fundraising Extravaganza is a 3-floor celebration with live music, local performers, artist-designed programs, food, spirits, and a new museum surprise every year.
