1 ANNAPOLIS GATEWAY | NEW PUBLIC SQUARE AND GALLERIES
ANNAPOLIS GATEWAY //Building on the city’s historical identity as a trading port on the Chesapeake Bay, this project proposes a radical new master plan for the Annapolis waterfront. A new yacht corridor is formed by two rows of mixed residential and retail buildings to draw in vessels from the bay to the newly formed Commerce Square. The urban fabric of Annapolis is an American grid system overlaid with French radial planning from points of civic importance. The new master plan resolves the existing fabric and expands upon it with a new square dedicated to commerce and the city’s maritime history. This new square is formed by an open air market, The National Sailing Hall of Fame, and the National Maritime Museum.

//The tower is not a new architectural form in the city of Annapolis which has already several. By using the tower type in the proposed Commerce Square, the new square is established on an equal footing with the Statehouse and the Naval Academy. The two symmetrical public buildings, the National Sailing Hall of Fame and the National Maritime Museum, work together as one to form Commerce Square and to frame the Yacht Corridor to the Chesapeake Bay.

11 PALAZZO TO PUBLIC | ART GALLERY ON THE VIA GIULIA
PALAZZO TO PUBLIC //The challenge of this studio was to introduce a single building to repair the urban fabric razed by Mussolini on the site. This new urban building has two fronts, one facing the residential Via Giulia and one facing the public Ponte Giuseppe Mazzini on the Tiber. Building a new art gallery on the Via Giulia proposes an entirely modern building function for what is historically a private residential building type, the palazzo. To make this typological transformation, the interior courtile is opened on what would be the garden side to create an engaging new public facade on the river, where grander architecture is appropriate.

THE MARKET HALL | NEW EASTERN MARKET
THE MARKET HALL //The key challenge for this new Eastern Market project was one of mitigating extreme disparities in scale. The site is vast and monumental, next to the mammoth forms of the Stadium Armory and RFK Stadium, but the ideal market experience is founded on personal human encounters. To engage the context and create a welcoming environment for patrons, the scale is addressed with classical architectural proportion in elevation and section. //Parti: The building is oriented along the primary east-west axis. Perpendicular to the east west orientation, a secondary axis is drawn from the Stadium Amory. The market hall is at the junction of these two axies, and stands as a connection between the public garden and the elevated private assembly hall.

21 TRIUMPH OF BACCHUS | ARTIFACT PAVILION AND BAR
TRIUMPH OF BACCHUS // The intent is to design an interpretive pavilion to house and display The Vase of the Triumph of Bacchus found this year on the site. The pavilion will span over the exposed archaeological excavation, transporting the patrons through time and peeling back the historical layers of the urban fabric.

25 COMPRESSION AND RELEASE | OBSERVATORY PROJECT
PATRICK SUÁREZ PORTFOLIO
COMPRESSION AND RELEASE // The observatory is a limminal space linking our earthly realm to the luminous beyond. This design sought to capture the essence of spacial transition from the profane into the sacred. The elements of floor, wall and ceiling were used to draw in the surrounding context and converge inward. By this the viewer is spiraled through a compression of space into the pinnacle moment of beholding the heavens through an orbiting occulus. Competition hosted by the Catholic University Department of Astrophysics and the School of Architecture for a future observatory on the north side of campus.

29 HARMONY IN HUMILITY | ST. FAUSTINA’S CHURCH
HARMONY IN HUMILITY The Divine Mercy Shrine is a major pilgrimage site in the United States, attracting many thousands of Catholics a year. The crux of the challenge was to master plan a new 800 seat chapel to house the pilgrims, which does not dominate the existing, historic, and devotionally important 170 seat chapel. The master plan orients the new church parallel to the old with the front portals of both churches connected by an arcade. By doing this, the significantly larger floorplan of the new church is tucked away from the approach, and a new third outdoor space is created between the two churches.

31 HARMONY IN HUMILITY | ST. FAUSTINA’S CHURCH
The strict height restriction on new construction in the town of Stockbridge is used here as a tool to make the new church appear secondary to the old despite its larger footprint. By a reduction of width as the nave transitions into the narthex, the to churches are both 30’ wide at the entrance, and the new 20 feet shorter.

PARTI
//The premise of the project is to draw together conventionally distinct programs into one interrelated whole. A coffee shop, bike shop and cycling studio are brought together at the collision of two grids, one structural, and the other organizational, drawn from the context of the site. In section, the programs overlap each other with the ground floor and mezzanines relating across a central atrium.

37 FORMAL ARTICULATION | WRITER’S PAVILION
FORMAL ARTICULTION //The pavilion was conceived as a single person retreat space, cast out into nature. The form is derived from two engaged spaces- a grounded reference library, and an elevated writing space. These two levels revolve around a central hearth and reflect both the abstraction and articulation in the writing process.
