DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE CULTURAL PRESERVATIONS In 19 century, Petaling Street was a Chinese community with a lot of traders and businessman doing their business dealings along the street. During 1870, Selangor civil war had erupted the Chinese community, the tin mines were abandoned. Many buildings were destroyed or severely damaged. At that time, the famous kapitan-Yap Ah Loy opened a tapioca mill to persuade the miners and coolies to stay at KL. Now, Petaling Street is fondly called “Chee Cheong Kai” in Cantonese which means Starch Factory Street. In 21 century, Petaling Street started to lose the story of itself. MCA Youth Chief, Senator Chong Sin Woon had said that, “Petaling Street did not reflect the identity of the Chinese community in terms of business and culture to attract more foreign tourists to visit the area. Besides, he also mentioned that Petaling Street suppose to be a tourist attraction which is known as “Chinatown” because it reflects the socio- culture of the Chinese community in the country but as you see Petaling Street now were full of cheap fake handbags, watches and shoes which did not interest us and the tourists. Now, there is nothing Chinese about "Chinatown" anymore. In 2019, 60 percent of the traders in Chinatown was foreigners. Meanwhile, Petaling Street was also rated poorly on Tripadvisor. It is rated a disappointing two out of five by people who visited the place. In conclusion, I would like to create a Chinese playground as an art performance centre. Objectives is to preserve Chinese art and performance and intended to nurture artisans while they create artisanal products to sell to consumers. Lastly, the centre will also be a tourist attraction and artisans workplace.
