National Spotlight to Shine on New Stadium June 20, 2011 — The 2011 season is shaping up to be a season of firsts. With construction taking place at Wickes Stadium to add synthetic field turf, a new scoreboard and lights, the Cardinals will play all of their home games at night instead of the typical noon kickoffs. On Oct. 20, Ashland visits SVSU for a primetime showdown that will air on CBS Sports Network. The game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. and is the first time either one of the schools will play on national television. ―This is a tremendous honor to be representing SVSU, the GLIAC and Division II in this nationally televised game against Ashland,‖ said Mike Watson, SVSU Athletic Director. ―This game will give us, Ashland and the GLIAC the opportunity to showcase to college football fans the high level of talent that plays in our schools and conference.‖ In a game that could have GLIAC conference championship implications, coach Jim Collins is excited for the national exposure. ―Anytime you can play on television it is a huge deal, but to be playing a team like Ashland, a team that has been one of the premier teams in the conference the past several years, makes it that much bigger of a game,‖ Collins said. The game is one of six that CBS will broadcast on its sports network. The others are Central Washington at Humboldt State (Sept. 8), Bloomsburg at Indiana (Sept. 15), Missouri Western State at Washburn (Sept. 22), Colorado School of Mines at Colorado State-Pueblo (Oct. 6), and Augustana (S.D.) at Minnesota State-Mankato (Oct. 27). SVSU was one of only three teams in the GLIAC that didn’t have lights in the stadium. With the addition of the lights, the Cardinals will play all five home games and two of their road games at night. The additions, which cost SVSU $1.2 million, are expected to be completed by Aug. 1. At the end of the day SV will have piled on over 200 yards on the ground in route to a 45 to 7 victory. SVSU Announces New Tailgating Policy UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University and the Saginaw Valley State University athletic department has announced a new tailgating policy that will be taking effect with the Cardinals first contest in 2011 against Ferris State University on September 10 at 7:00 PM. The existing policy needed to be updated after the University added lights to allow night contests for the football team. 2011 Tailgating Policy Tailgating is a collegiate tradition at football games. The University encourages the opportunity for parents, students and guests to socialize in that setting and understands that alcohol is often a part of such an event. The responsible use of alcohol is important. It is also important to respect the rights of others to enjoy the day's festivities.
5
Accordingly, the following guidelines will apply to the use of alcohol at any tailgating event. Please be advised that University Police are prepared to enforce applicable laws and University policies. Students should be aware that any violation of University policy will subject them to disciplinary action via the Code of Student Conduct. 1. Tailgating is permitted to begin on University property three hours prior to kickoff. All tailgating will end fifteen minutes prior to kickoff. 2. The use of alcohol is restricted to those individuals who are 21 years of age or older. University Police will enforce State law and issue citations for Minors in Possession. Individuals who furnish alcohol to minors will also be subject to this enforcement. 3. No games of entertainment which use alcohol or implements which encourage the excessive consumption of alcohol, for example, beer pong and beer bongs will be permitted. As a reminder, kegs or any common source of alcoholic beverage are not permitted. 4. All alcoholic beverages must be in a can or plastic container. No glass containers are permitted in tailgating areas. 5. No use of alcohol will be permitted while the football game is in progress. 6. Any use of music via loudspeakers will not be permitted while the football game is in progress 7. Individuals or groups are expected to pick up and dispose of any tailgating litter. 8. Parking Lot C will be reserved for Student Tailgating. No student tailgating activities will be permitted outside of this area. Individuals who are not going to attend the game are to leave the parking lot. Failure to comply with the above may result in referrals to the Student Conduct Program.
