Fourth Quarter Drive Falls Short in Team’s First Loss The SVSU offense and Hillsdale running back Joe Glendening spent Saturday night trading blows in a back-and-forth shootout, but it was Glendening and the Chargers who delivered the knockout punch. With less than two minutes remaining, the SVSU defense found itself in a familiar position: backed up in its own red zone, trying to hold on to a lead. Unlike last week’s stand against Northwood, the SVSU defense gave way to Glendening, and, three plays later, gave way to a Hillsdale touchdown that would stand as the final score in the 3835 loss. “We didn’t do a good job of keeping (Glendening) in check, and he had a great game,” head coach Jim Collins said. “We couldn’t stop him.” Glendening rushed for 245 yards on the ground, adding three touchdowns to bring his GLIAC-leading total to 14 on the season. The Cardinals had an opportunity to respond to Hillsdale’s late touchdown, but, for the first time this season, couldn’t engineer a late scoring drive to finish the game. After a short kickoff by Hillsdale, SVSU took the field at the Chargers’ 48-yard line with 1:16 remaining; but the Hillsdale defense forced a sack and three incompletions on the drive, batting down sophomore quarterback Jonathon Jennings’s last pass attempt to clinch the game. “We just missed our opportunity tonight,” Collins said. “We needed to play better in the fourth quarter. We brought that game down to the fourth quarter, and we weren’t able to convert.” The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-1 overall, bringing them into a three-way tie for the lead in the GLIAC North Division with Michigan Tech and Ferris State, who SVSU beat in their first game of the season.

Hillsdale outgained SVSU on the ground 254-163 and totaled 464 yards of offense. Their 38 points are the most that the Cardinals have given up to an opposing team this year.

“We just didn’t make enough plays,” said junior linebacker Grant Caserta, who led the team with 17 total tackles.”You’re not going to win many games when you give up that many points.” The Cardinals took a 21-17 lead into halftime behind two first-half touchdown passes from Jennings, but Glendening was too much for the SVSU defense. The junior scored his third and final touchdown in the third quarter; he totaled 373 all-purpose yards in the game. “We knew stopping him was going to be the key,” Caserta said. “He’s a good back, and we just didn’t do enough to slow him down.” SVSU took the lead in the fourth quarter when senior wide receiver Nick Gallina scored on a reverse to give the Cardinals a 35-31 lead, but it wasn’t enough. “We didn’t make plays when we needed to make plays,” Jennings said. “We had a good night offensively, but we didn’t get it done in the end.” Jennings finished with 183 yards passing; he added 46 yards on the ground and scored three total touchdowns on the night. Junior running back Ronnie Lark made his return after missing last week’s game with an ankle injury, rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown. SVSU travels to face Michigan Tech next Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Source: http://www.valleyvanguardonline.com/?p=429 By: Justin Brouckaert

Team Captains Zach Cecich (TE, JR, #89, son of David and Elizabeth), Paul Webb (DL, SR, #58, son of David and Vicki), and Brandon Williams (DE, SR, #8, son of Karen) represented the Cardinals at the pre-game coin toss.
