Ronnie Lark, Tim Hogue hope to be thunder and lightning out of Saginaw Valley State backfield KOCHVILLE TWP. — Ronnie Lark and Tim Hogue are ready for their close-up. Asked to pose for a photo at Wednesday's Saginaw Valley State media day, Hogue took off his sunglasses, and the two decided on a back-to-back pose, looking sideways at the camera with game faces on. And with the camera fixed on them, Hogue had some advice for the photographer. "I don't think we need the flash," Hogue said. There's no shortage of confidence, or flash, for SVSU's running back duo. After a 2011 season in which both were limited by injuries, there are high expectations for the two, both internally and externally, heading into the team's Sept. 1 opener against Valdosta State. "If we can keep these guys healthy, I think the sky's the limit for them," SVSU coach Jim Collins said. Lark had a breakout season on an otherwise disappointing team in 2010, recording 989 rushing yards, 89.9 per game, and 1,096 all purpose yards. He entered last season expecting more of the same, before an ankle injury in the second game limited him to 80 fewer carries and 500 fewer yards while he played the entire season hurt. And when he was on the field, Lark found his ankle wouldn't allow him to run in his usual style. "It definitely limited my carries a lot," Lark said. "I couldn't run the style that I wanted to. I could only run straight, I couldn't cut." Hogue, a transfer from Ferris State, entered the season listed as a wideout and kick returner. But with Lark limited, he soon found himself thrust into a key role in the backfield. He finished as the team's leading rusher, 664 yards on 105 carries while missing the playoff game with an injury. Now, both are 100 percent recovered heading into next week's opener, and have spent plenty of time talking about the potential they hold as a healthy duo. 2

"The potential with me and Ronnie being healthy at all times is pretty limitless," Hogue said. "When we're at practice and we're both healthy at the same time, it's like the offense just flows and flows and flows. Lark, a Flint Powers graduate, went as far to invoke Mark Ingram, the fellow Flint native and 2009 Heisman Trophy winner. Together with Trent Richardson, the duo was one of college football's best 1-2 punches in the Alabama backfield in 2009 and 2010. "I know me and (Hogue) are going to do great things like those two did," Lark said. A consistent running attack could was one thing the productive SVSU offense lacked at times. The Cardinals finished fourth in the GLIAC in total offense last year, despite having the third-worst rushing offense, in terms of yards per game. They hope to change that with two runners who can rack up the yards in different ways. Lark is more of a power runner, but isn't without agility, too. Hogue, three inches and 20 pounds smaller, and can use his speed and quickness to beat defenders on the outside. Collins said having two strong backs could help break in an offensive line that is replacing two experienced starters. "Good running backs, you don't have to block things perfectly with good running backs," Collins said. "They'll make a guy miss, they'll break a tackle, and so that's what we need." And Lark and Hogue have little doubt about their abilities to break tackles, make guys miss, and everything more running backs do. "Ronnie's more so the power back, he's the thunder to come and beat you down," Hogue said. "And then they just throw me in there, the lightning, to take it there with quick speed. Hit them fast, hit them hard. "That's pretty much how it's going to be this year." Source: http://www.mlive.com/cardinals/index.ssf/2012/08/ronnie_lark_tim_hogue_hope_to.html
