Last Minute Heroics Lift Cardinals Over No. 8 Blazers
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football program came through when it mattered most for a 28-24 comeback victory in the final minutes of regulation to defeat the No. 8 Valdosta State Blazers in the 2012 season opener. The thrilling victory saw the Cardinals (1-0) open their season against one of the perennial powers in all of Division II football in front of 4,891 fans at Wickes Stadium. After trading possessions to start the contest, Valdosta State (0-1) was able to put a drive together and light up the scoreboard first on a 24-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cayden Cochran to put the Blazers up 7-0. SVSU was able to even the score early in the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown pass by Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South HS) to junior wide receiver Jeff Janis(Tawas City, Mich.) with 10:07 to play in the half. Jennings would finish the night with 378 yards on 37-of-56 passing including four touchdowns. The Cardinals would turn the ball over to the Blazers on the four-yard line on a bad snap fumble with 4:20 left in the half that would give Valdosta State great field position. The Blazers would find paydirt just one play later on an Austin Scott run up the middle to take a 14-7 lead.
The Cardinal defense would force the Blazers into a four-and-out and get the ball back on their own 39 yard line. From there, Jennings would go to work on the Valdosta State defense completing five-of-six passes for 61 yards that was capped off by a 22-yard touchdown strike to Janis to knot the game at 14-14 heading into the intermission. Janis would finish the game with 14 catches for 167 yards and three scores. After trading possessions to start the second half, Saginaw Valley took its first lead of the game at the 8:40 mark of the third quarter on a 24-yard touch-pass from Jennings to Janis, putting the Cardinals ahead 21-14. It was the third touchdown connection between the two Cardinals. SVSU's lead would be short lived as Valdosta State struck back just 33 seconds later on a 70-yard completion from second string quarterback Graham Craig to Seantavious Jones to even the score at 21-21. After forcing a punt, Valdosta State took the lead back on a 32 yard field goal to put the Blazers up 24-21 with just seconds remaining in the third. On the ensuing possession, the Cardinals drove down to the Blazers five yard line before Jennings threw an interception that would end the scoring threat. After exchanging punts, SVSU received the ball with just over four minutes to go. Jennings orchestrated an 11 play, 80 yard drive to give the Cardinals the go-ahead lead on a 27 yard completion to Meijer "Player of the Game" Michael Albrecht (Midland, Mich.) to take the 28-24 edge with just over one minute to play. The scoring drive featured a fourth down and long conversion from Jennings to Janis to keep the Cardinal hopes alive. Albrecht finished the contest with 11 receptions for 120 yards and the game-winning touchdown. Valdosta State responded by taking the following kickoff close to midfield. However, the Cardinal defense would stand tall and secure the victory as a fourth down heave to the endzone by the Blazers went just out of reach. The Cardinal offense was pushed to full capacity tonight as they ran a total of 91 plays for 459 compared to just 67 plays for the Blazers. Saginaw Valley was 11-of-20 on third down conversions, including two-for-two on fourth down conversions. Saginaw Valley will look to keep their momentum going as they travel to Malone for a first-ever matchup with the Pioneers. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM on Saturday (Sept. 8). SVSU's Albrecht shines in win over Valdosta State Coming into this season, Saginaw Valley State football coach Jim Collins said that he expected Midland High graduate Michael Albrecht to have a breakout year. Saturday night, the junior wide receiver proved he was ready to do just that. Albrecht hauled in the game-winning 27-yard reception with just over a minute remaining in Saturday night’s 28-24 victory over Valdosta State (Ga.), capping off an 11-play, 80-yard drive that started on SVSU’s own 20-yard line. “The defense went to cover two and I just ran in the middle there, looked back and Jon threw me a great ball,” Albrecht said. “All I had to do was catch it and run in.” 7
Albrecht had 11 catches and a career-high 120 receiving yards in addition to the touchdown. “Jon (Jennings) was finding me all night, our offensive line was blocking, and everything was good,” Albrecht said. Collins was thrilled with Albrecht’s effort. “Michael did a really good job of setting up that safety. He gave him a little move to the corner and then broke inside and really separated, and Jon put it on the money.” Collins said Albrecht is a clutch player. “It reminded me of the Michael Albrecht senior year of high school that was the player of the year in the Saginaw Valley League. He had an excellent game today, did a great job of separating, caught the football, ran after the catch, played with great effort and was a key component in that win,” the coach said. The Cardinals were down 24-21 when junior quarterback Jon Jennings began engineering the late-game comeback, completing seven passes over the course of the three-minute drive. After a shaky start, the preseason All-American threw for 378 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. “Our keys did a great job of hanging in there and executing all those key, critical players,” Collins said. “We knew we had to prepare for it to be a fourth quarter game. There were times when they gained momentum, we gained momentum, but at the end of the day we persevered.” The Cardinals were playing without starting offensive linemen Tevon Conrad, Jesse Somsel, Kaleb Korr and starting defensive end Nate Snyder, who were suspended by coach Collins earlier this week. The Cardinals returned only one starter from last year on the offensive and defensive line, defensive tackle Ryan Busch. “There were four new starters on the offensive line, and I thought they did a tremendous job,” Collins said. “Times like this really define what kind of individuals you have one your team.” Both offenses moved the ball easily early in the first quarter, but each team missed field goals within the first seven minutes.
8
Valdosta State struck first with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter when junior quarterback Cayden Cochran ran the ball in from 24 yards out for the game’s first score. The Cardinals were able to capitalize on a forced fumble by Jeff Heath with an eightplay, 40-yard drive that culminated with their first touchdown of the season, a 2-yard pass from Jennings to junior wide receiver Jeff Janis early in the second quarter. After being pinned deep by a Blazer punt, Jennings muffed a handoff from center Trevor Wiitanen, leading to a four-yard score by Valdosta State freshman running back Austin Scott. A Cardinals defensive stand led to great field position with 1:09 remaining in the first half, and Jennings capitalized by commanding an impressive final drive, completing five of six passes, including a 22-yard strike to Janis to tie the game at 14 – a score that would hold at halftime. Jennings and Janis lost seemingly no chemistry or momentum from last year, when they connected for 14 touchdowns. Including last year’s playoff loss to MinnesotaDuluth, they’ve recorded six touchdowns in the last two games. “Jeff just makes plays,” Jennings said. “He’s big, fast, strong, a great target to throw to. They weren’t going to double coverage on him and it allowed us to exploit the defense a little bit with him one on one.” The combo struck for a third and final time early in the third corner, this time on a 24yard strike, but the Blazers responded immediately with a 70-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Graham Craig, who started the second half, to junior wide receiver Seantavious Jones. The Blazers added on a 32-yard field goal to take a 24-21 lead into the final quarter, a score that held until the Cardinals’ final drive. SVSU is in action next Saturday when they travel to face Malone.
