Last Second Field Goal Falls Short, Cards Fall to Findlay 29-27 UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – A last second field goal attempt by Saginaw Valley State University fell just short as the Cardinals dropped a 29-27 decision to the University of Findlay Saturday (Sept. 15) evening on Hall of Fame Weekend at Wickes Stadium. The Oilers (2-0, 2-0 GLIAC) jumped ahead early, scoring on their first possession as Findlay's Clay Belton found Jaryd Brown in the endzone on a 28-yard pass. The Cardinals (2-1, 1-1 GLIAC) would respond on their ensuing possession, marching 75 yards on 11 plays. Meijer "Player of the Game" Tim Hogue (Inkster, Mich.) would cap off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Hogue finished the evening with 119 yards on 16 attempts with two touchdowns. Findlay would find the endzone once more in the first half, giving them a 13-7 advantage over the Cardinals at the break. Saginaw Valley came out strong in the second half, scoring on their first possession when junior Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South HS) found an open Michael Albrecht (Midland, Mich.) from three yards out to give the Cardinals their first lead of the game. Jennings would end the game, 22-of-32 for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Findlay would then score back-to-back touchdowns giving them a 26-14 advantage early in the fourth quarter.
A key 35-yard catch by senior tight end Zach Cecich (Crown Point, Ind.) on third down would set the table for Jennings to hit Jeff Janis (Tawas, Mich.) on a 43-yard touchdown strike. The score would bring Saginaw Valley within five points of the Oilers, 26-21. Janis would finish the game with seven catches for 131 yards and a score. Findlay would attempt a field goal midway through the fourth quarter, which was blocked by David Toussaint (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. / Boyd H. Anderson HS) to give the Cardinals possession with just over six minutes to play. Saginaw Valley would then put together a 94 yard drive to take the lead, 27-26, on a 34-yard Hogue run. The Oilers took the final lead of the ball game when Findlay's Seth White connected on a 25-yard field goal with 11 seconds left. SVSU would get the ball back with a chance to win the game with just under :10 to play. Jennings would connect on a 38-yard pass to Mark Thrash (Wyoming, Mich./Park HS) to set up a Scott Stanford (Novi, Mich.) 54-yard field goal attempt, which barley missed, giving Findlay the 29-27 win. Defensively, senior Grant Caserta (Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa HS) led the team with 16 tackles while Brian Johnson (Muskegon, Mich. / Muskegon Catholic Central HS) charted 14 with a tackle for a loss. Saginaw Valley State University will return to action next Saturday (Sept. 22) as they travel to Lake Erie for a GLIAC match-up. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM. SVSU falls short on last-second field goal, loses to Findlay, 29-27 KOCHVILLE TWP. — Saginaw Valley State players streamed from the sidelines as the clock ran out, because depth perception can be a tricky thing. From their vantage point, it appeared the football had left kicker Scott Stanford's foot, gone through the uprights and given their team a last-second victory. But as the back judges cruelly signaled, the ball had actually fallen just short of the crossbar, meaning SVSU lost to Findlay, 29-27, Saturday night at Wickes Stadium. "Crushing," SVSU coach Jim Collins said. "I thought we had a great chance at it." The missed field goal capped a frantic fourth quarter that saw a 12-point SVSU comeback and two lead changes in the final six minutes. The second of the game with 11 seconds left, when Findlay's Seth White made his second career field goal, from 25 yards out. The Cardinals took over on their own 25 with nine seconds left, and quarterback Jonathon Jennings completed one pass to the 37, with less than two seconds left. That's where Stanford lined up his field goal. For Collins, watching the field goal fall just short was an apropos way to end the game. "A lot of things happened in that game like that for us," Collins said. "We just didn't execute at the ability that we can or that we should in order to win a football game." After a touchdown on the opening drive, SVSU failed to score again the rest of the first half. Findlay, meanwhile, scored twice, buoyed by the strong play of quarterback Clay Belton, a transfer from Maryland who threw for 335 yards on 32-of-42 passing. "He's a good quarterback," linebacker Grant Caserta said. "He knows how to move in the pocket, and we didn't get to him enough tonight. He really picked us apart when he needed to in the clutch."
12
SVSU came back with two straight scores in the fourth quarter — the second from Tim Hogue, part of a 119-yard, two-touchdown night — to briefly take the lead. Jennings finished 22-for-32 for 294 yards, two scores and a pick. The Cardinals committed only three penalties on the night, but all three turned failed third-down conversions into first downs, and the Oilers scored on all three drives. The last came late in the third quarter, when defensive back Jon Bryant knocked the ball from a receiver, but was given 15 yards for a high hit. "Those are the rules, and we have to accept it, and we weren't able to overcome it," Collins said. "That was the tough thing." The loss comes two weeks after the Cardinals opened the season with a home win against No. 8 Valdosta State. "You can't hold your head down for too long," Jennings said. "Obviously you have to just move on and learn from your losses. Really we're just going to push forward, the season is not even close to being over." By Kyle Austin | kaustin1@mlive.com
