No. 15 Cardinals Stopped by Chargers, 34-17 HILSDALE, Mich. - The No. 15 Saginaw Valley State University football dropped a tough road contest at Hillsdale College today (Oct. 20), 34-17. After a Cardinal miscue on a punt return, Hillsdale put the first points of the contest on the board on a run by Joe Glendening with just under six minutes to play in the first quarter. The Cardinal offense responded with a 6-play 73-yard drive that was capped off by a 38-yard strike from Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South HS) to Jeff Janis (Tawas, Mich.) that evened the score at 7-7. Hilldale connected on a 36-yard field goal to start the second quarter and give the Chargers the lead back at 10-7. The Cardinals and kicker Scott Stanford (Novi, Mich.) tacked on a 44-yard field goal to once again knot the score, 10-10. After forcing the Cardinals to punt to start the second half, the Chargers found the endzone on a pass from Anothy Mifsud to Andrew Mott to put Hillsdale up 17-10 with 12:21 to play in the third quarter. Jennings and the Cardinal offense once again answer back, this time with a 7-play, 75yard drive that Jennings finished off with a 2-yard run into the endzone to tie the game at 17-17. Hilldale took a 24-17 lead after the Cardinals committed two personal foul penalties on a punt to give the Chargers the ball at the Saginaw Valley 25-yard line. The Chargers used a field goal and touchdown to extend their lead to 34-17 and go on to the victory. Jennings finished the day 22-of-32 passing for 195 yards and a touchdown through the air and 10 carries for 45 yards and a score on the ground. Mark Thrash (Wyoming,
Mich.) hauled in nine passes for 83 yards to earn Meijer "Player of the Game" honors, while Janis finished the game with seven catches for 72 yards and touchdown. The defense was lead by Grant Caserta (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS) who finished the game with 13 tackles. Brian Jonhson (Muskegon, Mich./Catholic Central HS) chipped in eight, while DeAngelo Parris (Clinton Twp. Mich./Warren De La Salle HS) finished with seven stops. The Cardinals fall to 6-2 overall on the season and 5-2 in the GLIAC, while the Chargers improve to 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC. Second Half Mistakes Lead to 34-17 Loss A number of mistakes on special teams and big plays proved to be too much for the number 15th ranked Cardinals. Saturday, the Cardinals traveled to Hillsdale College to take on the Chargers. Both teams came in tied for first in the GLIAC North with 5-1 conference records. After a number of missed opportunities for the Cardinals and an early turnover that proved costly, Hillsdale defeated SVSU 34-17. Both defenses held strong early on when Hillsdale was forced to punt on their second possession. Midland native, junior receiver Michael Albrecht failed to field the punt, giving the ball back to Hillsdale 12 yards out from the end zone. Two plays later, Hillsdale’s senior tailback Joe Glendening punched it in to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead. For the second year in a row, Glendening hurt the Cardinals on the ground. Glendening rushed for 121 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries. On the ensuing drive, the Cardinals answered the Hillsdale score. Junior quarterback Jonathan Jennings completed four passes on four attempts including a 38-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Jeff Janis to tie the game at seven. 8
Jennings finished the game completing 22 of 32 passes for 195 yards and one touchdown. Janis hauled in six balls for 72 yards and one touchdown. Hillsdale quickly moved the ball on the following drive. Chargers senior quarterback Anthony Misfud hit sophomore receiver Brett Miller for a 35-yard gain on the second play of the drive to put Hillsdale in SVSU territory. After giving up 15 yards on a fourth and one, the Cardinals’ defense held strong and forced Hillsdale to settle for a field goal to bring the score to 10-7. Jennings hit six of eight on the next drive, leading the Cardinals’ offense down the field where Scott Sanford tied the game up with a 44-yard field goal of his own. Despite outgaining the Chargers in total offense and having twice the number of first downs, the Cardinals went into halftime tied with Hillsdale 10-10. The third quarter began with the Cardinals being forced to punt after three plays. Hillsdale came out and quickly established a second-half running game with Glendening picking up gains of 12 and 15 yards on consecutive carries. Misfud again caught the defense off guard and hit junior receiver Anthony Mott for a 29-yard touchdown pass to pull the Chargers ahead 17-10. The Cardinals answered on the following drive with senior tailback Tim Hogue ripping off a 30-yard run to start and Jennings hitting junior receiver Mark Thrash for a 37-yard gain. Jennings capped the drive off with a 2-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 17. Thrash led the Cardinals in receptions with nine catches for 83 yards on a day where Hillsdale gave up yards, but refused to break. Both the Chargers and Cardinals exchanged punts on the next two drives, but two penalties on the Cardinals during their punt resulted in a free 30 yards for Hillsdale. Those mistakes proved to be fatal for the Cardinals. Starting their drive at the SVSU 25-yard line, Hillsdale took advantage with Misfud hitting senior H-back Cam White for a touchdown on the first play of the drive to extend the lead to 24-17. Following a stalled drive and a punt from the Cardinals, Hillsdale put together a 15-play drive that burned 10 minutes of the clock and ended with a field goal to increase the lead 27-17. 9
The Cardinals’ offense stalled again and Hillsdale took advantage of great field position. Misfud hit another deep pass to receiver Miller to put the Chargers in SVSU territory. Hillsdale sophomore tailback Isaac Spence punched it in from seven yards out one play later to bring the score to 34-17. Hogue led the Cardinals on the ground, rushing 17 times for 60 yards while senior linebacker Grant Caserta led the Cardinals’ defense with 13 tackles on the day. The loss drops the Cardinals to 5-2 in conference play and 6-2 overall. The win puts Hillsdale alone atop the GLIAC north with a 6-1 record.
