GET TO KNOW K-POP GIRL GROUP LOONA BY ELIZABETH DE LUNA

2020 has been a major bummer of a year,

to say the least, but that didn’t stop K-pop girl group LOONA from throwing a massive (virtual) party last month — their Midnight Festival, a live digital concert celebrating their third EP [12:00], pronounced “midnight.” On stage, ViVi, Yves, JinSoul, Kim Lip, Chuu, HeeJin, HyunJin, Go Won, Choerry, Olivia Hye, and YeoJin shared the group’s vision for the new release: “[12:00] contains our message that all LOONAs are always together, that we are all dignified, equal, and worthy of freedom. We hope this message can be spread around the entire world.”

In this exclusive video, LOONA takes Teen Vogue behind the scenes as they prepared to release [12:00]. We followed them to choreography rehearsal (“I am inviting you guys to our practice room!” proclaims HeeJin warmly) and heard from the group about what they’ve been thinking about lately — including why JinSoul thinks that “spending time together [to rehearse] has decreased and spending time on ourselves has increased.”

We wanted to know what LOONA’s life is like outside of the practice room, too, and to learn more about the album from their perspective. To see the world The album’s lead single, “Why Not?,” is an anthem for from LOONA’s eyes, we asked each member to scroll that vision and encourages listeners to pursue what through their camera rolls and send us exclusive makes them happy and revel in their uniqueness. “Fol- snaps that remind them of the word “Midnight” and low your mood, follow your feeling, why not? Do it!” their new single, “Why Not?” They sent in everything the lyrics exclaim. “Dance all night... Don’t worry about from selfies to sunsets, and below, you can dive deep what others think.” It’s a sentiment that LOONA has ex- into LOONA’s orbit. pressed throughout their career, and it has earned them a loyal legion of fans, called Orbits — and a Billboard 200 chart debut with [12:00].

For 20-year-old vocalist HeeJin, [12:00] is a special album. “It was released on my birthday, October 19th,” she explains. “It’s a meaningful date for me, so I chose a picture from my birthday last year.” Fellow LOONA members and staff from the group’s managing agency, BlockBerry Creative, held a surprise party for her. Another member played photographer, “but I can’t remember which one!” she says, and “the cake was cream flavored, and had fruit on it.”

Heejin

Recording and rehearsals for the new album were a busy time for the team. “We had this nonstop schedule and I was really tired, but I was so proud and happy mentally,” HeeJin says. “I want to show people something more, that I can do a little more. I make sure to take nutritional supplements to restore my energy.” She also gains perspective on how far she’s come since training to be an idol, “when my mind is shaken, I look back at what I’ve done.”

She explains her “Why Not?” photo by noting that “thinking like our song ‘Why Not?’ is a way I relieve stress.” For example, “I’ve been really into ice cream lately and [just before I took this photo in the car] I was thinking really hard about whether or not I should eat ice cream.” She was worried about staying healthy ahead of their comeback, which was just a week away. “But I thought to myself ‘One cup of ice cream is okay.’” For HeeJin, the photo is about putting your happiness first. So, what else has made her happy lately? “I’ve been listening to Ariana Grande’s ‘Positions’ wherever I go.”

Hyunjin

I fall asleep at midnight,” says 19-year-old HyunJin, and that sleep comes via an unusual combo of “listening to music or drinking coffee.” Because of that, “I chose this photo of me [at midnight] with 100% no makeup and in need of root dying for my hair,” she jokes. It was taken in the group’s dorm, just before bed and just after LOONA finished promoting February’s single, “So What?” HyunJin says that, since then, “I feel like all of the members and I are getting closer as time passes by.” HyunJin’s “Why Not?” photo is more recent and was taken by BlockBerry Creative’s CEO as the group was shooting the music video for the song. Bouncing around was fun but it came with an unexpected consequence “my feet were super dirty when I got off that trampoline!” HyunJin says. “I chose that picture because I wanted to deliver the message ‘Why not fly with me?’ to Orbits.” Lately, she’s been listening to Troye Sivan and adds, “I want to recommend ‘Rager Teenager’ [to Orbits!]”

Kim Lip

“I chose this picture [for “Midnight”] because it was taken on the first day of shooting the [12:00] album jacket!” says 21-year-old Kim Lip. “I was worried, thinking that this hairstyle wouldn’t look good on me, but it looks better than I thought. I had fun, it was a type of [styling] concept that I’d never tried before! Recording at the studio and the comeback itself makes me so excited. I was eager to show our songs and stage performance to Orbits, and I feel happy because they recognize how much effort and emotion I put in when I record.” To relax after working, “I try to exercise by stretching every day. I’m relaxed when I stretch. And I try to eat vitamins, too, but most important is sleep.” Her new hair brought with it a “Why Not?” attitude. “With my fierce look, I tried to take as many pictures as I could. This was taken while I was waiting in line to eat raw fish after supporting [fellow LOONA member] Choerry,” when she made an appearance on a Korean TV show called Urban Fisherman. “It was not taken with a disposable camera but with the film camera filter. My hobby is cameras and taking pictures, so if I have a chance to share my work, I definitely want to show people.” However, “I didn’t have any [film photos] that fit the ‘Why Not?’ theme! So I chose this.” When asked which member took the photo, she responds “Yves” She shares this encouraging message to Orbits who might be having a hard time: “We only have 2 months until 2021. I think many people are disappointed about the [Covid-19] situation. In 2020, I’ve listened to ‘Dear Name’ by IU and songs by Etham a lot. I felt their voices comforted me and I even shed tears when I listened to ‘Dear Name.’”

“I usually like to look at the stars, and I thought of the night sky when I heard the word ‘Midnight,’” says 19-year old Go Won. “That day Yves, Kim Lip, Olivia Hye, YeoJin, and I went to support Choerry on Urban Fisherman. The shooting location was near the ocean, the sky looked beautiful, so I took this photo.” “My ‘Why Not’ photo was taken when we were shooting the album jacket for the song as well as the B Version album jacket. It was taken by Yves, who tries to take my life’s best pictures. I think it has a lot of ‘Why Not?’ vibes, especially because the palm trees make it look like a festival. All of the members like taking pictures, so we take pictures of each other a lot. When I look at them, it makes me reminisce about the past and my emotions.”

Go Won

“My favorite part about preparing for this comeback was getting a different hairstyle. I really like trying new styles and bright colors so I really like this blue hair color and want to try the pink color that ViVi had for her solo album.” To bring fans comfort, “I recommend ‘Fall Again’ from our [12:00] album,” Go Won says. “I really like that song and it’s perfect for October and November. I hope Orbits get to listen to it and get comfy.”

Choerry

“I chose this first picture because when I heard the word ‘Midnight,’ I thought of sunset!” says energetic 19-year-old Choerry. “I took this photo when LOONA went to Jeju Island for our Summer Package photoshoot and the sky was beautiful. I usually look up at the sky a lot, and when we finished the photo shoot and had dinner, the sky was so beautiful and colorful… I felt like I had dessert with my eyes.” Choerry’s second photo was a happy mistake. “I took this on the set for ‘Why Not?’ and laughed a lot because I thought I’d found a new way of taking selfies,” she says. “Even though there is a lot of light in this photo, I wanted to show some confidence and say ‘What’s wrong with it?’ Asking ‘Why Not?’ means there are no standards for selfies.” To stay healthy as they promote [12:00], she confesses, “I don’t really drink water most of the time but in preparation for the comeback, I started to drink a lot of tea,” and in general, “I take a lot of vitamins. I felt happy while preparing for this release because I thought ‘There aren’t many days until we see our Orbits.’” Choerry wants Orbits to know that “when I have free time, I watch dramas like Stranger Things and It’s Okay to Not Be Okay. And I recently got to play with my puppy, Lucky. We really got closer, so I feel proud of myself.” Choerry has previously mentioned that she enjoys collecting pens for fun, and notes that she still enjoys it as a hobby. “I really like ones that are pretty and fancy and recently got into fountain pens.”

Chuu

21-year-old Chuu went above and beyond for her “Midnight photo,” submitting this quadriptych of snaps she says she took “right before I fell asleep in a comfortable position. It was midnight in my dorm! I think I turned off the lights right away after taking these photos.” When preparing for bed, Chuu says, “I try to use the humidifier. It’s very helpful and I use it a lot because I can’t fall asleep when my nose and throat are dry. Chuu’s “Why Not?” submission is “a selfie that contains the ‘Why?’ hand shape,” she says. “I took it at the studio, behind [fellow members] ViVi and Olivia Hye.” Her favorite part of comeback preparations was learning the choreography for “Why Not?” “Our teamwork was great and it was fast, too!” As a teen, Chuu, whose birth name is Kim Jiwoo, wrote a piano ballad called “Kim Jiwoo’s Song” that fans still adore. She says that she’s still interested in composing— “I try to write down lyrics every time I come up with something.” When asked to share something she loves with Orbit, Chuu echoes Choerry, “The best drama of the year is It’s Okay To Not Be Okay! It really helped me to be happy.”

LOONA’s youngest member, 17-year-old YeoJin, chose photos that were taken while shooting the music video for “Why Not?” — “[In my “Midnight” photo] the moon was at the prettiest hour. As soon as I saw it, I thought of ‘Midnight.’ I also chose this photo because the moon was so beautiful—it shone like Orbits and I wanted us to see it together!” In the second photo, YeoJin wears a white dress from one of the video’s final scenes. “I wanted to show Orbits my outfit because it was my favorite!” Like Kim Lip, YeoJin took this photo using an app that mimics a film camera. “It gives the photo a warm filter, and the picture itself comes out very… emotional and I like that the best.”

Yeojin

For this comeback YeoJin says LOONA has one wish: “We all hope that we can live up to Orbits’ expectations!” When asked to share a message with fans that may be going through a hard time, especially after the challenges of this year, YeoJin replies thoughtfully, “Orbits! When I’m having hard times, I listen to a lot of music on my bed alone, to try to forget the tiredness. I hope you guys listen to music when you guys are having hard times too! I listen to BOA’s ‘My Sweetie’ and our songs ‘Universe’ and ‘Fall Again’ mostly nowadays. I hope you guys listen to the songs that I‘ve just recommended and that the struggles go away after.”

Yves

When we ask 23-year-old Yves why she chose her first photo, she replies honestly, “I actually didn’t know we [could send selfies to Teen Vogue], so I chose this photo I took around midnight while waiting for my turn during the ‘Why Not?’ music video shoot. It was just before the last scene and all of our members gathered together in our white dresses and the quiet sounds that the night made. The moon was hanging there above all of us. It looked like a movie. I felt alive because of the smell of the dirt, trees, and midnight air. I shook a little bit while taking the photo [so it’s a little blurry], but it has a lot of memories attached to it.” For the Why Not? photo… “I chose this photo for those who are not a stan of Yves... that’s basically a love gun to make people stan me. Olivia Hye took this photo with different angles. She tried her best. Choerry and Olivia Hye had a competition to see who could take the best pictures of me, and Olivia Hye won.” “My favorite part of preparing our new album was that I think I became more mature, more like… I grew up while I was waiting for the comeback. It was hard for me to empty my mind slowly because I always think too much. But now I have the courage to do it,” Yves says.

When asked what advice she’d give to Orbits having a difficult time, Yves says, “I watched a K-Drama called The Light In Your Eyes and that really helped me. The most touching line was ‘Life is worth living, even if it’s not a big day and a small day comes. Don’t ruin the present because of the past full of regrets and an unstable future. Live today. You deserve it!’ It was comforting to me and at the same time, I really wanted to say this to our Orbits. I am dazzled every day by the light that Orbits give me. And it will continue to be.”

JinSoul

I chose the first photo because I wanted to burn this ‘Midnight’ era up with our enthusiasm!” says 23-year-old JinSoul. “It was taken while we were shooting LOONA’s Summer Package. I asked my manager to take pictures of me so I could monitor [my posing] and I think it came out nicely. It was pretty cold outside but the campfire was warm, it felt great.” “For ‘Why Not?’ I’ve chosen this picture of a cake. It reminds me of a festival or party when I [let loose and] think, ‘Ok, why not?’ My mom sent me this for this year’s birthday. I only ate the bread part, but it was strawberry flavored and it was good. I thought that those flowers weren’t edible so I threw them away… but later I found out [I could have eaten them.]”

“My favorite part about preparing for [12:00] is that this album contains many different genres, so we got to try different concepts,” she says. Fans know that JinSoul loves to build models, especially of characters from Gundam, an extremely popular Japanese sci-fi franchise. However, “lately, I don’t [build] as often, because of the comeback and because I’ve been focusing on composing songs! The cat Nanoblock in my JinSoul Log from June is the most recent one I’ve built.” She is also taking time to care for herself, adding, “Even though we are busy, I try to sleep early and on the way to promotions relax” When asked to send a message to fans, JinSoul is thrilled, “Orbits! How have you been doing? We really missed you while we were preparing for our new album! I hope you felt the energy that we’ve sent through [12:00]. Also, I hope you listen to our song ‘Where You At’ when you are having hard times. I felt happy when we sang this song during our online concert ‘Midnight Festival’ and I hope it makes you all feel happy, too!”

19-year-old Olivia Hye took her “Midnight” photo with LOONA’s Midnight Festival in mind. Her fighting pose “means that I’m going to enjoy the party as much as possible.” Her “Why Not?” photo is more self-explanatory: “Doesn’t it look like I’m saying ‘Why Not?’” she asks. Both photos were taken backstage while filming the YouTube show fanijeom24 with Chuu and ViVi. Like Kim Lip and YeoJin, Olivia Hye used a filtering app to add a film-like effect to her shots.

Olivia Hye

Olivia Hye shares that she has grown in several important ways over the past few months, “As I prepared for this comeback, I think my will and mind became more mature.” Whenever she doubts herself, “I try to give myself confidence and say ‘I will eventually do well when I go on the stage.’” She adds, “My favorite song from [12:00] is ‘Star,’” a track that appears on the album in both English and Korean (“Voice”). “It feels like a completely different song in [each language.]” When Teen Vogue notes that many fans have had a difficult year and ask her to share something that has recently made her happy, Olivia Hye replies wisely, “I am looking for my happiness so I can’t really recommend anything specifically, but if Orbits are happy about something, I also am happy.”

ViVi

Hong Kong-born ViVi, 23, shared two photos of the sky at dusk. For the first one, she says, “I chose this photo because of the vibe and the color. The word ‘Midnight’ is as pretty as this photo in my mind. I took it when we were resting in YangYang,” a seaside county two hours away from LOONA’s home in Seoul. “All of the members went on vacation together and watched the sunset along the beach.” “I took the second photo on the second day of filming the ‘Why Not?’ music video while I was waiting for my turn. If you look at the ground you can’t see anything but if you look up, you can see the pretty sky. It means that even though we all have busy daily lives, we should look up to the sky at least once.” When asked how she takes care of herself amidst a busy schedule, ViVi takes her own advice, “I try to have my own time to think.” She is thrilled to be releasing new music and is “hoping to get a chance to see Orbits” despite the limitations of COVID-19. Plus, “Our teamwork is getting better and better and that’s been my favorite part of preparing for this comeback.”

cks For The Season

Positions - Ariana Grande

Finally, Ariana Grande answers the question we were all asking: what would it sound like if a 1940s film star woke to find herself in the 21st century, carved out her own corner of pop music, adopted the world’s most recognizable ponytail, and gathered her soaring vocals and stacked harmonies into an exploration of modern love? Positions, Ariana Grande’s sixth studio album, is a journey. It’s not so much a departure from her two most recent entries, Sweetener and thank u, next, as it is an amalgamation of those works with her lauded and beloved Dangerous Woman. It’s certainly her most explicit album to date, but her musings on romance, lust, longing, and heartache have never sounded more at home than on this orchestral yet beat-heavy record. It’s daring. It’s showy. It’s wildly theatrical — and it gives Ariana the space to do all the things she does best. Available on Apple Music & Spotify

Good News - Megan Thee Stallion Good News is hardly a pivot to socially conscious rap. Megan does once more call for justice for Taylor on the opening track, “Shots Fired,” which also claps back at Lanez for his petty swipes against her. But her smackdown of Lanez feels almost incidental to the broader claim being made here–when she rhymes over the instrumental hook from The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Who Shot Ya?” Meg implicitly asserts that she’s entitled to rewrite rap history in her own curvaceous image. Such a stance is nothing new for the rapper who already effortlessly inserted herself into badass rap classics from NWA (“Girls in the Hood,” included here) and Tupac (“B.I.T.C.H.,” from her spring 2020 EP Suga). Meg adopts male rap’s bragadocious pride with a breezy nonchalance as she expands on her three timeless themes–men ain’t shit (but big dicks have their uses), her pussy is unrivalled, and her ass is peerless. \. Women do generally complement Meg’s style. She blends seamlessly with those horny Miami mercenaries City Girls on “Do It On the Dick,” and on “Savage Remix” Beyonce shows herself the only guest whose flow rivals Meg’s own. [12:00] - LOONA

While not pushing the envelope, Loona have materialized as quite the solid Kpop. The group have consistently made efforts to diversify their sound in subtle ways through their various projects, however their whopping 12 member rotation has often posed problems in developing an outstanding chemistry. Also, artistic direction has been somewhat of an offroad affair through the years. “[12:00]” doesn’t aid the fact that a dozen Kpop minds must think as one, however it does serve as a nice crossroad in experimentation and mainstream adherence, while effectively utilizing the raw vocal talent of it’s members. The LP packs the expected collection of Kpop bops into it’s conventionally brief runtime. An amalgamation of sensual, energy packed, archetypical R&B tunes that are fated to attract a fan base. For however unoriginal the content is, it’s merited by the sensations of passion it’s capable of mustering over the course of it’s short run time. It’s unlike the dozen reinvent Kpop, however they create an easily enjoyable rendition of it. Available on Apple Music & Spotify

Bad Bunny (née Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) has quickly become one of the biggest Latinx superstars of our time. With his chart-topping album Las Que No Iban a Salir and penchant for pushing boundaries and defying gender norms, it’s no surprise why Cheetos chose him as the face of their “Deja Tu Huella” campaign. The initiative — which will officially be unveiled at the American Music Awards on Nov. 22 — supports artists who are leaving their mark on culture, whether its through music, fashion, or entertainment. “It is an honor that Cheetos collaborated with me on this great project and movement. I am very proud to be a part of it,” he told POPSUGAR. “We are coming in very strong! We are happy with the collaboration with Cheetos, and many good things are coming — new music is coming in November!” In collaboration with the project, Cheetos and Bad Bunny’s Good Bunny Foundation are giving back to the Hispanic community with a $500,000 commitment.

“I am not focused on going out to a certain place and being recognized, I’m only focused on working 24/7 on my music, my ideas, and my projects. Everything else that comes along is a blessing.”

“What motivates me is love, doing the right thing, and positively impacting people. I do everything because I feel it, because it comes from my heart. That’s what motivates me every day to try to change the negative thoughts that some people have and try to make my surroundings more beautiful and free,” he said. “As you grow and mature, you start seeing the realities of many things and you start realizing the power you have and how far your voice can go.” But Bad Bunny isn’t just talking the talk — he’s walking the walk by making a conscious effort to work with more women in the music industry. Though he didn’t reveal the exact projects he has in store for us, Bad Bunny did say he’s been collaborating with women from various facets of life. Like most of us, Bad Bunny also knows that voting in this year’s presidential election is crucial, so he’s been using his platform to galvanize fans to make their voices heard come Nov. 3. “I believe that it is important to vote for your future and the future of your family and friends. It’s about taking into account the well-being of others and not just yourself,” he said. “It’s a little selfish to not vote for whatever reason, so get out there and vote!” Bad Bunny is nominated for four awards at this year’s AMAs, including favorite male Latin artist and favorite Latin album for both YHLQMDLG and Las Que No Iban a Salir. Tune in on Nov. 22 to find out if he wins and for the unveiling of his “Deja Tu Huella” collabora-

Just like the name of the campaign, the 26-yearold multi-platinum Puerto Rican artist has certainly made his mark on the music industry. In 2019, he took home his first Latin Grammy for best urban album for X 100pre, and most recently, his album Las Que No Iban A Salir debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s list of Top Latin Albums. He also made history as the first-ever Latinx reggaeton artist to grace the cover of Rolling Stone this past May. But at the end of the day, all of those achievements are just added bonuses for Bad Bunny whose goal is simply to continue doing what he loves. “All of these achievements are truly a reward and a bonus to what I do,” he said. “I am not focused on going out to a certain place and being recognized, I’m only focused on working 24/7 on my music, my ideas, and my projects. Las Que No Iban a Salir Bad Bunny Everything else that comes along is a blessing.” In addition to dominating the music charts, Bad Bunny isn’t afraid to use his platform to champion causes close to his heart, including gender AVAILABLE ON: equality and women’s rights. Earlier this month, he made his debut at the Billboard Music Awards, APPLE MUSIC and he used the opportunity to speak out against gender violence not only with his performance SPOTIFY of his female empowerment anthem, “Yo Perreo Sola,” but with his acceptance speech as well. When I asked Bad Bunny what motivates him to continue raising his voice and spreading aware-

r u o Y Here's r o F e p o c s o r o H 0 2 0 2 r e b m e Dec If Your Zodiac Sign Is Taurus (April 20-May 20) While it’s important to live by conviction or stick to your guns, this month challenges you to let go of grudges, buried feelings, and unhealthy emotional entanglements that are keeping you stuck in place. Although it’s never easy to give up things that are familiar to us (even our pain), there are times when we must, if we’re to keep living and to keep thriving. Don’t just ask for more out of life, ask for better.

If Your Zodiac Sign Is Gemini (May 21-June 20) A significant partnership could end now as the cosmos frees you up to pursue more fulfilling things. It’s also possible you could meet a partnerin-crime of sorts that will support your growth. Try not to let the fear of uncertainty slow you down. Trust your intuition versus hard and fast logic. If your faith has been lacking, you’re tasked with the responsibility of renewing it. You have more than you think.

If Your Zodiac Sign Is Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re pushed this month to forget Your romantic life gets a blast of energy this month, which could bring in someone special or give you the green light to take a connection to a deeper level. A romantic connection could come to a necessary hault as well, especially if it’s no longer making you happy. Either way, truth and discernment are your strongest allies when it comes to your heart. Meanwhile, a rare, special creative opportunity could fall into your lap.

If Your Zodiac Sign Is Aries (March 21-April 19) You’re pushed this month to forget everything you know and approach life with wide-eyed curiosity and a willingness to make mistakes. This is the pathway to learning, opportunity, and growth. Steer clear of self-righteousness and selfishness this go-round as what goes around, will come back around, good things included. That said, how can you embody the change you want to see in the world? Take the high road.

If Your Zodiac Sign Is Cancer (June 21-July 22) You’re pushed this month to forget everything you know and approach life with wide-eyed curiosity and a willingness to make mistakes. This is the pathway to learning, opportunity, and growth. Steer clear of self-righteousness and selfishness this go-round as what goes around, will come back around, good things included. That said, how can you embody the change you want to see in the world? Take the high road.

If Your Zodiac Is Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Home and family take the spotlight this month as some Virgos could be welcoming a new addition to the family (furry babies included). Buying a house or relocation could also be a part of this story, as could a change in relationship dynamics with a parent. No matter how things unfold, stability and fulfillment are the overarching themes. A new job could also be on the horizon. Pay attention to your work-life balance.

If Your Zodiac Sign Is Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It’s time to take a step back and look at the big picture, Libra. You might think that being hyper-focused on certain things in your life is keeping you a step ahead. But, this tunnel-vision is actually preventing you from seeing all the wonderful options and possibilities around you. It’s time to branch out and take a few risks. Believe in your talents. What you don’t know, you can learn.

If Your Zodiac Sign Is Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) It’s possible that a job could be coming to a close, but it’s doubtful that it will catch you by surprise. It seems this urge to move on to something new has been building within you for a while.
