city received ‘Best Golf Destination Asia & Australasia’ from IAGTO members to years ago. City Hall realizes the positive impact of having over 500,000 of rounds per year played by overseas vacationers, and is keen to support events such as the Thailand Golf Championship, The Singha Caddie Championship and The Amazing Thailand Golf Festival. Many Mayor’s across Thailand love to play golf, but with Pattaya Mayor Kuhn Itthiphol’s handicap of five, this probably makes him a fairly unique Mayor here in Asia. During the pro-am at the Old Course he partnered LPGA stars Amy Yang and the very likeable Karrie Webb around the 18 holes. He had a great time with both of them and jokingly calls himself Karrie’s Thailand swing coach!! Khun Itthiphol welcomes The Pattaya Golfer which is the first magazine dedicated to one region in Thailand. He also hopes to possibly bump into the many foreign holiday makers around one of the many superb courses in the region over the next few months.

wned by a Thai family with interests in the CM Motor Group who handle Nissan, JCB and other activities, their golf division is in fact the smallest section of this major groups activities.
Siam Country Club Plantation opened in 2008 with 27 holes and the final addition to this 63 hole resort was the introduction of Siam Country Club Waterside in 2014.
14
Future plans include opening an 80 bed roomed hotel close to the old course. With 63 holes Siam Country Club is by far the biggest golf resort in Thailand with over 150,000 rounds of golf expected in the next twelve months. 80% are foreign players with the top countries being Japan, Europe, Korea and Taiwan.
The Old Course is a traditionally designed course with 101 bunkers within a valley with a hill surrounded by mature trees. A very popular golf course. Plantation is like a links style layout with panoramic views with a Championship course and approximately 125 bunkers. Waterside has only 60 bunkers and is designed as a fun to play course, easier

Siam Country Club has hosted the Honda LPGA Thailand for several years, once at Plantation and for the past three years at the Old Course. This international tournament attracts
the top 60 women’s golfers including the likes of Stacey Lewis, Inbee Park, Lydia Koh the top three on the LPG money list, plus Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer and all the leading Thai Golfers on the tour. Over 25,000 turned up to watch the final round and millions also watch around the World on TV too.

Waterside has now been open for 6 months and according to their manager Suksan it is almost 95% perfect. ‘It naturally takes time for everyone involved including maintenance staff and the 200 caddies onsite to get used to a new layout, but he feels that everyone is now up to scratch offering the first class service that golfers expect from its sister courses, ‘ said Suksan.’ This resort not only hosts the LPGA but also many corporate tournaments throughout the year including the Bangkok Post Championship and a Golf Digest event both at Waterside. Reaction from the players is they also like the minimalistic style of the new Waterside club house which offers panoramic views of the 8th, 9th and 18th holes. This was a great achievement especially as they were up against some tough opposition across this part of the world. They also organize one of the most unique and colourful tournament in the World. The Singha Amazing Thailand sponsored Caddie Championship. Has over 900 female caddie competing in qualifying tournements across Thailand with the top 140 getting into the grand final where they play against the top caddies from China, Japan Malaysia, Indonesia,

‘The three courses at Siam Country Club are by and far much better than anyone can imagine and those three courses taken together are some of the best in Thailand.
M
I also really enjoy playing at Laem Chabang, an older Jack Nicklaus course that is kept in good condition. Then off the beaten track and perhaps not so famous I like to play Rayong Green Valley, which is a Peter Thompson parkland course and great for the budget conscious player.’
‘Most of our golfers like to stay at branded hotels in the middle of Pattaya where it is easy to walk to all of the attractions. The Marriott Pattaya Resort & Spa and the Centara Pattaya are two good examples of the hotels our clients greatly enjoy.
ark Siegel is the Managing Director of Golfasian, Asia’s leading golf tour operator. Mike travels the world and is also a very handy golfer as well. ‘Pattaya is a fantastic golfing destination, and the East Coast Golf Course Management Association (EGA) have done an exceptional job in working together as a team and ensuring all aspects of each course have the proper training from the Caddies all the way to the management, said Mike.’
Photo Caption : Laem Chabang. He also enjoys Greenwood Golf Club which when he first played there they did not even have a clubhouse. ‘Although I do also enjoy Siam Country Club, I kind of like playing some of the out of the way country clubs. Khao Kweow is good and I also like St Andrews 2000, but it can be busy with tour groups, added Jason.
With his hospitality owner’s hat, Tulip Group take golf very seriously. ‘In fact at our Centara Grand Pratamnak hotel we have just employed Thailand’s first Golf Concierge, who will clean the guests golf clubs and also they plan to put a couple of golf packages together too.’
Golfers feel welcome when they go to play there and even if they don’t play well, they come away leaving the course with a smile. My personal favorite courses have to be Laem Chabang, a great challenge from any tee and spectacular views, Burpaha due to the way the all-round experience you get when playing there. Burapha may not be visually the best course on the Eastern Seaboard, but they always make you feel like a VIP from the moment you arrive. I have to add Siam Country Club’s Old Course a great golfing experience.’
J
ason Payne is the Vice President at Tulip Group one of the leading developers of Condominiums and Hotels in Pattaya. In between running this large empire Jason likes to grab his golf bag and head for the local courses. ‘I have played most of the courses here and my favorite course would be Eastern Star. It was in fact the first golf course I ever played in Thailand and it is kind of links style track, its long and straight and they have a great signature par 3 (He thinks it is No 13). I also like their 18th which starts out tree lined and your second shot onto the green is quite hard,’ said Jason.

Callum said, ’Lots of our customers enjoy the camaraderie of playing with friends when they play golf around Pattaya. For many it will also be the first time they have ever played golf with a caddie, which definitely adds to the whole golfing experience in Thailand.’ They often like to recommend to clients, Burapha Golf Club with its 36 holes only 30 minutes’ drive from the city.

‘It has all the challenges with some magnificent scenic views across the region as well. One bonus here is that many of the caddies also play golf and you can actually arrange to play 18 holes with them too. ‘ ‘Another 27 hole course which is also popular is Pattana Golf Resort, a bit further north of the city. The three nine hole courses are in tip top condition and the large club house here offers some of the best facilities in the region, added Callum.’

o give it a festive flavor the tournament was held on the club’s flood lite Lakes course, and was kindly sponsored by one of the region’s leading property developers Kingdom Property. Instead of supervising present distribution to the kids of the world, Santa Claus flew in for his final round of golf before the Christmas rush, and of course he chose Pattaya. The caddies also welcomed him with hugs all around. Ho Ho Ho!!!
Wonder Kid!
Santa was also very impressed with 13 year old Thai wonder kid Tanabadee Suaypan whose handicap is only 10. He ended up shooting a remarkable score of 10 over par on one of Jack Nicklaus’s toughest courses. Watch out for Tanabadee in the future! The whole event had a very seasonal feel with the highlight being a 30 voice choir made up of kids from the Pattaya Orphanage singing carols to all the players and guests. A very happy first tournament for the Pattaya Golfer team….watch out for some more zany events around Pattaya in 2015!

Celebrity Interview
Mike Whan,
Commissioner LPGA Pattaya Golfer managed to grab an exclusive interview with the LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan, who has been responsible for growing the LPGA TOUR into a truly global tour with plays from all over the World competing for top prizes.
B
efore the start of the 2015 schedule and the Asian Swing in the spring, we first asked Mike Whan about the LPGA and Thailand.
Currently there are four Thais on the main tour with another Player, Ariya Jutanugarn, Why did you decide to bring the joining in 2015. Would you LPGA tour to Pattaya rather consider adding a second than say Bangkok, Hua Hin or Thai based tournament in the even Phuket in the first place? Autumn Asian Swing? Mike Whan: It was a mutual decision in conjunction with our tournament partners and it was an easy decision given the great combination of a resort setting and top-notch golf venue, --- where sponsors/customers could enjoy, and players would have a great experience.
This current setup of Honda LPGA Thailand is a very popular one with the players given the first class venue and beautiful accommodations. That’s clearly reflected in Honda LPGA Thailand field every year.
Are there future plans to move to the Siam Country Club’s new course the Waterside? MW: While we don’t have any immediate plans to play Waterside, we did have a few players and rules officials look at the Waterside course,
28
and all agreed it is a venue that could deliver a great tournament.
MW: We are truly excited about the growth of world-class golfers from Thailand and we hope that trend continues. We will work with our partners, starting with Channel 7 and Honda to see if doing so would help to grow the game in Thailand. At this point, we are very proud of our Honda and Channel 7 relationship, and honored to be part of such a fantastic event!
The International Crown was a great success. Do you think now is the time to set up a mens/ womens event on the lines of the Ryder Cup, but letting Asian and Australasian players team up against teams from Europe and the States?
Photo Caption : Mike Whan, LPGA Commissioner.
29
MW: We’ve talked about partnering with the men for some types of events, but at this point we’re not quite there yet. We’re excited about the International Crown, and we certainly do not believe that International Crown (nor the LPGA) “needs” the addition of men to create enhanced excitement. The inaugural International Crown could not have gone better, and 2016 will be held just outside of Chicago at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Recently, we recently announced that we are taking the 2018 version on the road and to the Republic of Korea. That was huge for the Tour because we were looking for a sponsor to help us grow the event globally and UL (Underwriters Laboratories) allowed us to do that and has become a great partner for us.
Your LPGA TV coverage is a lot livelier than the men’s rather stuffy approach. Do you have a personal input into the programme style?
Regarding TV productions, our limitation to showing more groups/ players is driven by number of cameras/crews/budget, and never based on a desire to show only certain groups. The accessibility we provide to the players is one of our greatest strengths and it’s what sets us apart from other sports. Where else do your top athletes, when they play in an event, know the sponsor, know the customer and know what is important that week. You can see our players after they finish a round, talk to the fans, sign autographs, pose for pictures and then take the time to go meet with our sponsors and that is unique to us and our advantage.
Is it a concern that many of your top players are suffering from injuries as they are asked to enter more events. Are there
any plans to limit the number of events each play must enter? MW: Injuries are unfortunately a part of the game and of any sport. We hate to see them happen as much as the players do and we have a great medical team that travels to the tournaments and helps keep them on the course as much as possible. The players can select however many tournaments they want to compete in and it really isn’t any defined number that we give them. That’s why I think it’s so important to keep the number of tournaments each year around 32-34 events so the players do get a break and an offseason to recover. I am comfortable putting the LPGA’s “average strength of field” up against ANY tour or any other sport. The best in the LPGA consistently show-up and compete on our Tour.
MW: We have a great relationship with the Golf Channel (who produces our events in North America) and IMG Media (who produce our events in Asia) – both are VERY collaborative, and the production process allows for input from the LPGA. Our viewership growth is impressive, and we’re excited that so many of our global fans praise our approach to LPGA event production.
If so do you think it would be possible to focus on more players, not just the star names every week. Perhaps more interviews on course or afterwards. Any suggestions? MW: Our focus is always on all our players on Tour because they all have interesting stories to tell. At the LPGA we rotate who we feature on our website, on social media and are constantly working on pitches behind the scenes for players 50-100 just as much as we are the top 20 players.
30
Photo Caption : Mike Whan at Siam Country Club Pattaya.
Do you have any comments on number of events and sponsors the four Thai Players currently when other tours have been on tour? struggling? MW: We are lucky to have a group as talented and as willing to help promote the LPGA as we do in Pornanong Phatlum, Moriya Jutanugarn, Thidapa Suwannapura and P.K. Kongraphan. Moriya, along with her sister Ariya who just earned membership through our final stage of Q-School, and Pornanong were members of Team Thailand at the Interational Crown and that team is going to be a team to watch in the next installments of the Crown. There is a great amount of golf talent in that country and those four in particular have been a lot of fun to watch compete. Obviously having a set of extremely talented sisters on Tour in the Jutanugarns will make for some interesting storylines and must-see moments this season.
MW: Since 2010, we have seen some pretty significant growth across the board. Our prize money has gone from $41.4 million to $62 million in 2015, while both the number of tournaments (23-33 including the 2014 International Crown) and the TV coverage has grown (205 hours to over 400 hours) and I think we are headed in the right direction. Personally, I don’t focus on the men’s purses or their “sponsor price points”. My job is to deliver a great value/ experience for our title partners and the way we are growing shows that our sponsors and partners are happy with their experience.
Photo Caption : Top Ranked LPGA Thai Player Pornanong Phatlum.
Personally do you manage to visit any of the men’s events and to swap ideas with other PGA Championship. Our goal is to The tour has grown commissioners? grow the game of golf and I couldn’t significantly since you took MW: Yes, of course and we have be more excited to carry the LPGA over. Finally where do you see the LPGA going in the next 5 years. MW: Our numbers are up across the board this year, which is a great thing for us. Both our TV and social media numbers are up and that means people are engaged with our product. We have some pretty incredible talent on Tour and we are always looking for more ways to showcase their talent. Our goal each and every year is to keep moving forward. We had two goals at the top of our lists this year and those were to build
a long-term answer for the Kraft Nabisco, which we did and it’s now the ANA Inspiration. The other was that with the LPGA Championship as we transitioned it to the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. We want to make sure our majors have long term roots so we know we can play them for the next 40-50 years There are other concepts we would love – a pro-am event where we can play with our business partners and celebrities kind of an AT&T if you will on the women’s side and we don’t really have a match play event either and those are two areas I would love to see us fill in the next year or two.

Where to
Stay
Like its golf courses, Pattaya really does have many places to stay to suit all tastes and budgets.

If you want to be in the thick of the action in Central Pattaya you are spoilt for choice with major chains including Holiday Inn, Amari, Marriott , Hilton and Mercure all offering 4 and 5 star accommodation. There are also numerous 2-3 star options plus pubs offering great economic packages. For the more traditional and quieter hotel there is the Dusit Thani to the west of the main beach, which is also the official accommodation for the LPGA tour when they visit the city.

If shopping is your bag, then check out the award winning Hilton Pattaya that sits above the Central Festival
Shopping Centre right in the centre of Beach Road. Apart from staying in Central Pattaya there are also a number of other areas worth checking, including the Wongamat Beach area west of the city. Here you will discover one of the largest hotels in the city, the Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort, which caters for families with a themed waterpark. The Pullman is also nearby with an excellent beachside restaurant. Just to the east of the centre of the city is Pratamnak. The Royal Cliff Resort actually has three main buildings here overlooking Pattaya bay and the island of Koh Larn offering over 2,000 rooms, and is one of the top resorts in
Thailand. Centara Grand Pratamnak is another new hotel worth a visit with an excellent roof top pool and bar, and it is close to the city’s only par 3 golf course at the nearby Asia Hotel. Jomtien Beach stretches for several kilometres east of Pratamnak and is popular with Russians. Many choices mainly in the 2-3 star variety here. To be honest although there are many hotels in the region, they do get booked up especially at weekends during the high season so it is advisable to go on line or through a reputable travel agent and book ahead. Enjoy some wonderful hospitality in Pattaya during your stay.

Laem Chabang opened in 1993 with the legend Jack Nicklaus as its designer. At the time Jack was the number one golf course designer and has since designed six courses here in Thailand.

eam Chabang however is one of his favorite courses in Asia, and he regularly returns to inspect his work. Apparently he was last at the club about four years ago. The owners gave him a completely free hand and it took him two years to complete the 27 holes.
There are now three nine hole courses, Mountain (A), Lakes (B) and Valley (C). The pros don’t like the Mountain course as it is short with many OB’s, the easiest course
38
is the Lakes and the Valley which the pros like, as it is the longest nine holes and they can position their shots. Many think that the Valley is perhaps the best nine holes in the region. Jack at his best as he makes you think ahead about your strategy!
Night Golf At the beginning they opened nine holes at a time, with the last course being the Valley. Then about two years ago they added flood lights on the Lakes course, to accommodate the large number of Pattaya golfers
who late and still wanted to play golf after a full day at the office. They did a lot of research before putting in the lights and even now to improve what is already a very good system, they are considering putting in the very latest LED lights, which offers three times the light and the maintenance is much easier to run too. They may also in the future flood lite the three holes in front of the club house too.

You ideally need your club close to an industrial and tourist area to guarantee players booking seven days a week. Then the business will survive!’ added Wongwasin. To maintain their high standard of service a club like Laem Chabang employs over 400 caddies and another 100 maintenance staff, so running a golf club is very labour intensive.

Clubhouse Upgrade
In addition they have just finished completely renovating the club house, locker rooms, pros shop and dining room, which now has a separate bar alongside the outside terrace. Next year they plan to finish the meeting rooms and more facilities outside including a large tent for meetings even BBQ’s.
They try to keep their pricing in line with other Championship courses, and reckon their caddies are some of the best trained caddies in Thailand. Their buffets and live entertainment in the restaurant are also very popular.
Surahan Wongwasin the clubs owner and President said ‘As a golf course owner you need to have a location in a busy area and our course is well served not only by tourists from Pattaya but also by the main businesses and factories surrounding the area.’
During the high season from November to April the club is running at capacity at weekends so it is best to book ahead.

At the time Jens was a single handicap golfer. After his accident and being left in hospital while all his friends carried on life and playing golf, Jens soon realized that integration or inclusion are not self-evident, and with his great passion for golf and a strong will, he managed to return back into his life. He in fact returned to Thailand in 2004 for a holiday. He learned the country and its peoples love and traveled two days before the 2004 tsunami and then returned back to Germany.

In 2005 he supported the relief efforts for the tsunami in Thailand and founded with his family the German

He told us that they have achieved a lot in recent years. Firstly since 2006, we have supported golf as therapy for disabled children in Friedberg Golf Club back in Germany. Golf is the ideal sport therapy, because all the senses will use them.
In Germany, they organize an annual charity golf tournament to raise funds for their projects. Disabled and nondisabled golfers playing together, according to the same rules, have fun and exchange ideas. In the evening there is a big party with many disabled guests. It has become the highlight of the golf season.
Standing with a club promotes blood circulation, toning and much more, because sitting in a wheelchair is not in our nature. For many years we have also support disabled people in Thailand, which of course are not served by such a good social system as in Germany with tools etc. In 2010 and 2011 his association sent with the Meyra Ortopedia from

However his main problem is heat as his body tends to get very hot so he now wears water cooled clothing and sprays himself with water. He can play 18 holes in the daytime but his favorite course is Laem Chabang’s night course as it is normally cooler.
He is definitely a character on or off the course, and jokes that when people are paired with him in a tournament they usually quietly say they will give him a shot per hole. Afterwards they tend to say that will be the last time as Jens usually can get close if not actually beats them. He is a very extraordinary character and actually all he wishes is that more people try to treat someone in a wheel chair as an equal.

After Your Round
We all know that Thailand is a top vacation destination and Pattaya along with Bangkok certainly tops the list as a must visit city. Here we list a few places to enjoy around town.

nly 90 minutes down the expressway from the capital, Pattaya once a sleepy fishing village has now become South East Asia’s fastest growing resort. Although perhaps well known for its colourful nightlife, the region also offers vacationers everything from excellent golf courses to traditional Thai culture.
Photo Caption: Art in Paradise Pattaya.
Apart from over 23 top class golf courses, there are many top international hotels, plus a number of cultural attractions, night clubs, a
broad range of restaurants, sports and water activities, shopping malls and traditional shows. As an avid golfer it is great to also experience the local attractions as well, especially as the Thais are experts on creating some unusual attractions. Sanctuary of Truth, for example, lets tourists visit the beautiful wooden building that is impossible to find anywhere else. Silverlake Winery, the award winning Non Nooch Botanical Gardens, Pattaya’s Floating Market, and Mini Siam are also recommended places to see. Art in Paradise near 2nd road in the centre of the city allows visitors to actually create their own painting by get into the 3D paintings. Great fun and a real photo opportunity. If you wish to be a bit more active, you can try a spot of fishing, sailing, jet skiing, para sailing, scuba diving, elephant trekking or go karting. For a real fun few hours also check out the latest offering to hit town, namely Cartoon’s Network’s ‘Amazone’, billed as South East Asia’s biggest water park.

Retail Therapy
Who can resist a bit of retail therapy… Pattaya will not let you down here. You can pick up some great bargains at the local stalls along the beach road or visit a number of top shopping malls including the vast Central Festival Shopping Centre, with both local and international brands for sale. Every weekend they also run a massive night market at the top end of Tappasit Road near Sukhumvit Road.
46
Here they sell copies of well-known brands from handbags to trainers and clothing to perfume. Close by is Pattaya’s outlet mall and here you can stock up on all the latest golf equipment and clothes, with excellent discounts on top brands….not copies here!!! Of course at night many head for Pattaya’s Walking Street or LK Metro for plenty of Beer-bars, gogo bars, strip pubs, night clubs, discotheques, massage parlors, and restaurants.
Getting around Pattaya is fairly easy as well. The most popular type of transport is Song Taew (Baht Bus), which can carry approximately 11-12 passengers . You can find Song Taews anywhere in Pattaya city, and just tell them where you are heading. Pattaya is a 24 hour city and it also happens to have some of the best golf course in Asia….enjoy!

Danang Golf Club
Reminiscent of the world-famous sandbelt in Melbourne, Australia and the coasts of Scotland, Greg Norman’s former designer, Australian Harley Kruse who managed the Danang Golf Club construction, says it’s rare to be find such ideal land for golf courses in Asia. “It’s classic links ground meets Royal Melbourne meets China Beach,” Kruse says of the course. “There’s nothing in Asia quite like it. It’s setting a new standard for the type of courses that will be built throughout Asia in the future.” In 2013, for the second year in a row, Danang GC was named best course in Vietnam. This year it received a special award from the International
Its developer, VinaCapital Group, also owns the adjacent Ocean Villas complex, which is joined to the golf course by an under-road cart path that allows golfers to travel seamlessly to and from the course in a few minutes.
The signature hole is the 16th, a 148yard par-3 that plays up to China Beach. From the tee, the Cham Islands appear in the distance. You can hear, but until reaching the green can’t see, the pounding surf. A pillbox from French colonial days stands sentry between the sharply sloping green and the 17th tee.
There’s a lot of sand on the 7190yard layout from the shark tees (6660 yards from the from the black tips and 6210 yards from the whites).
Ideal for that few days golf vacation, you can fly from Bangkok with Vietnam Airways to Danang via either Saigon or Hanoi.
In typical Norman style, bunkering features prominently and there are few blind tee shots. Numerous holes have sand edging along most of the fairway, often blending into shaped bunkers that guard heavilyundulating greens.

Stars IN F
Pattaya
or us mere weekend hackers and golf vacationers we know why we love to play golf here in the land of smiles‌..but it is also a firm favorite with the stars too. You ask any professional and they love to enjoy the Thai hospitality while playing here.
In this region we are lucky to have two major tournaments every year. The Asian Tour’s Thailand Golf Championship held in December at Amata Springs, then the stars on the LPGA head over to the Siam Country Club to play the Honda LPGA Thailand on the Old Course at the end of February. Here is a collection of pictures of the stars who have played here recently including Tiger Woods who flew in to play a skins game at Amata.

TV’S On Course Pundit
Many of the faces will be familiar to you, however one voice I am sure you would recognize is that of Jay Townsend who is a course commentator for the European and Asian tours. Thailand is also well known for its caddies, but a super caddie, a certain Mr. Billy Foster whose boss is Lee Westwood, knows the Amata course well and had some fun with the caddie boxes after Lee’s round of 62 there in 2012. Hope you get a chance to see your heroes up close in the coming months.

What the players said‌. about The
Thailand Golf Championships
The likes of Henrik Stenson, Rickie Fowler, Louis Oothuizen, Hunter Mahan, John Daly, Charl Schwartzel, Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Darren Clarke and Justin Rose have all competed against Thais Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Amphibarnrat at Amata Spring Golf Club.

he likes of Henrik Stenson, Rickie Fowler, Louis Oothuizen, Hunter Mahan, John Daly, Charl Schwartzel, Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Darren Clarke and Justin Rose have all competed against Thais Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Amphibarnrat at Amata Spring Golf Club. Speaking to them at the various press conferences or grabbing the odd comment out on the course, the one constant comment is that they all genuinely like coming to Thailand. This year Lee Westwood returned to take part in his third championship, having won in 2012. Sergio Garcia has played in all four events and won in 2013 and Bubba Watson was also back for the third time too, and very keen to win. Ryder Cup heroes Martin Kaymer and Victor Dubusson plus rising star Tommy Fleetwood were new comers along with a smattering of Japanese names all here to battle it out with the Asian Tour players, many who treat this event as their Asian Major. These top guys can naturally pick and choose where they play around the world and with tournaments taking place almost every week, most need to stay fit and reduce not increase the number of non-majors they attend. Certainly the likes of Bubba or Sergio don’t need to fly for 24 hours to compete at Amata, however apart from some healthy additions to their bank balances they actually enjoy the tournament and spending a few days in Bangkok.
Genuine Welcome!
Martin Kaymer told us that this was in fact his first trip to Thailand, and he was overwhelmed by the genuine kindness and the welcome he has received. Although it had been a long season, he was definitely here to win and was excited to be playing against such a large number of top players.
56
Photo Caption : Englands Tommy Fleetwood with Wobbly his Caddie. Adding to the value of winning a large purse, this year four valuable places in the 2015 British Open to be hosted at the home of golf St Andrews were up for grabs. Thongchai Jaidee now ranked in the world’s top 40 is a full member of the European Tour and a regular at the US events was back on home soil and is seen as the players host for many of his friends from the States and in Europe.
Holiday Makers.
Sergio Garcia has admitted he has often taken holidays in Thailand and told us that he was grabbing a few days break after the 2014 tournament somewhere in Thailand with his girlfriend and mates. Many of the players treat this as an end of term outing and without doubt all appreciate the support they get from the organisers. They all say that these 18 holes at Amata Spring is a real test and has the thickest rough on the tour, and with the wind too is a great challenge. Most of the top players stay at the St Regis in Bangkok, which according to Kaymer has the most comfortable beds on tour and he slept like a baby.
But I have won two Masters!
Bubba turned up in his first year here, and decided to play at the golf course opposite St Regis. Little did he realize that the Bangkok Sports Club was for members only? However after a few ‘But my name is Bubba” with the Thai receptionists, the two time Masters winner was eventually allowed to play and went around with a 7 iron and putter. Another nice touch is how the owner of Amata and his young sons are welcomed by the players who are happy to play with them during the pro –ams. They take the tournament very seriously but after their rounds all love to take in Bangkok and its great nightlife and restaurants. According to Bubba they love to take a Tuk Tuk and drive around the streets (none as Soi’s). In fact at one stage he was evening planning to buy one to export back to the States.
Best Stop all Year
Perhaps the event was best summed up by Jens Beck , Bubba’s manager, who told us that they really look forward to returning here as they are treated so well and to be honest this was without doubt the best stop anywhere they stay during the whole season.
Lee the Winner
This year’s winner of the Thailand Golf Championship was Lee Westwood. However perhaps the biggest winner was in fact Thailand, which was seen to millions of homes during the global TV coverage and the Land of Smiles added it’s magic to all the players as well.
Great Exposure for Thailand
In 2015 we will see the arrival of the co sanctioned Asian Tour and European Tours new Thailand Classic from February 12th-15th 2015 hosted by Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin. Also on February 26th –March 1st 2015 the annual Honda LPGA lands at the Old Course at Siam Country Club in Pattaya with the top 50 stars from the LPGA tour.

So with more another large audiences on TV anticipated, more and more golfers will soon realise that Thailand is a top golfing destination for the stars and vacationers alike.

pain’s Sergio Garcia decided to ask former world number one tennis player Juan Carlos Ferrero to caddie for him at this year’s Thailand Golf Championship. The world number seven had his girlfriend Katharina Boehm carry his bag for him when he won the Thailand Golf Championship in 2013.
However he decided to give her a break this year and teamed up with Ferrero at the US$1 million Thai showpiece. “Juan Carlos is one of my best friends who loves golf and is a very good player himself. He’s a threehandicapper and obviously knows what he’s doing,’ said Garcia. “It’s nice for him to get some experience this week, but I know my girlfriend wants to be back on the bag some time so you’ll see her again,” added Garcia. Tipping Thai Caddies
Many of you will be experiencing Pattaya’s 23 golf courses for the first time.
A
nother first for many will be the experience of having a caddie to help you on your round. In Thailand all golf courses employ Thai caddies, and it is actually part of the fun of playing in the land of smiles to book a local caddie when you are paying for your round. Here in Pattaya there is an estimated 4,000 caddies, mainly local women who are professionally trained to assist golfers of all standards. When you arrive at the clubhouse it is compulsory to book a caddy as part of the golf package including green fee, golf cart and caddy. Most clubs will charge around Baht300-350 caddie fee when you check in. A percentage of this goes to the caddie. This is their full time job, which they enjoy and take very seriously. Caddies are in the most well trained and will have a good knowledge of their course, providing you with the accurate yardage along the fairways and will be able to read those tricky undulating greens.
Photo Caption : Caddies at Amata Spring.
They will also assist in selecting your clubs, cleaning them, and will drive the golf cart or pull your golf trolley. During the hot weather some players book a second caddy just to hold an umbrella, and to fan them as they play their 18 holes. At the end of the round you are expected to tip your caddie for helping you over the 18 holes. As the say it is up to you but normally a fair
59
tip would be around Baht300 – 500. Remember many clubs do not give caddies a salary so they rely on you for their living. Many caddies are encouraged by their golf clubs to actually play golf in their spare time, so have a better understanding of the rules of the game. They even have their own annual golf tournament known as the Singha Amazing Thailand Caddy Championship. Over 800 caddies from all of the country enter and the actual final is held here in Pattaya at Siam Country Club’s Plantation course against top caddies from across Asia. O
K there are many bars and pubs ready to serve you the typical full blown English breakfast, often known as a ‘fry up’, along with a dollop of sport on big TV screens, but don’t despair there are also a huge variety of excellent restaurants dotted around the city and beyond offering wonderful creative dishes in some very interesting locations. Many, especially vacationers, should naturally try the local dishes, and as Pattaya still has a thriving fishing community, you can experience some of the daily catches, grilled or poached at most Thai restaurants. The View and The Glasshouse are two examples where you can find excellent fish dishes served on the beach in very atmospheric set ups.
then try Café Des Amis in Jomtien which has an authentic outdoor Riviera style courtyard. There are also a couple of La Baguette cafes serving freshly backed pastries and drinks in Jomtien and near the Dusit Thani hotel. Also close by in Jomtien is Brunos run by a very clever Swiss owner called Freddie. The service here is tip top and if you like your steaks check out News Café around the corner too. Perhaps a great spot to view the city is from the Hilton’s Horizon Bar where they serve cocktails 34 levels above the Central Festival shopping centre.
Book ahead during the New Year festivities as you will get a front row seat to view the fireworks here. If you are near Pratamnak check out a very unusual restaurant called Cabbages and Condoms, set up by a clever Thai restaurateur where local farmers in the north supply the produce and profits go towards raising awareness to the population explosion. Here instead of mints they give you a condom with your check. Over the next few issues we will feature more outstanding places to eat. Bon Appetite in Pattaya.

Both located in the area known as Na Jomtien, they are around fifteen minutes east of the city centre. New kid on the block and next to the Glasshouse is a fabulous addition to Pattaya’s beachside dinning experience called Bacco Beach. This brings you a complete Italian style menu and we also feature Bacco Beach in this issue. Well worth the trip and both are top of the list of many HI So Thais down from Bangkok, especially at the Weekends. In the centre of the city are several great places including Mantra with its multi kitchens including Chinese, Indian and Thai dishes. Located next to the Amari Towers on the beach road, this place has a themed style décor and once a month hosts great concerts with tributes to the Beach Boys or the Beatles. Their Sunday brunch is also very popular. If you crave for the French touch

If you are new in town then you may not know that Pattaya’s version of the Italian coastline can be found in a great hideaway called Na Jomtien 8kms east of the city
iSo Thai’s from Bangkok have made this little enclave of beach front restaurants they favorite destination, and now joining the list is a wonderful addition called Bacco Beach. The brainchild of Italian entrepreneur and food guru Sergio Forte, he has created a very special style of restaurant right next to the established Glass House restaurant.

64
Sergio originally created several successful restaurants in Bangkok and his first Bacco outlet in Thonglor is a roaring hit. Here in Na Jomtien, and with no expense spared, Sergio and his designers have created a very special and unusual restaurant, where you can either enter through a vast Wine cask or directly from the beach.
With a choice of tables’ undercover inside or under the stars on the beach, this really is a great place to come both during the day for a swim and a snack or at night for a romantic dinner or just a great night out with the family. As Sergio explained you can choose from a pizza and an iced beer from under THB400 up to the best cuts
of meat in town washed down with some excellent wine for a few thousand Baht. The menu is extensive, covering great starters including, salads, vegetable soup with pesto or fresh seafood soup with crostini bread. You then have a large selection of fresh pasta with traditional Italian sauces, baked pasta and risotto’s. If seafood is your preference they have snow fish or Brazino imported sea bass. Or for Pizza lovers you can choose from Classic Pizza, Bianche or specials. You will see the vast array of meats on offer at the class display counters along with some very impressive rounds of cheese. For the kids Bacco Beach has some very tasty gelate or ice cream to some of you. To sum up Bacco Beach, which bills itself as a Ristorante, Pizzeria, Bar or Gelateria, is the perfect place to chill out in a very relaxed atmosphere while taking in some great food and some very cool drinks. Real Estate is Big News for Pattaya As we read in the media, financial pundits the world over have always stated that the most reliable long term investment is still in ‘Bricks and mortar’ and here in Thailand the same applies.

T
hailand’s property Industry is very adaptable, and even through the last few years of political unrest, real estate still continues to operate. Pattaya attracted just over 10 million tourists last year and has over 100,000 expats living in the city. In fact Pattaya is the fastest growing resort anywhere in South East Asia.
Photo Caption: Riviera.
The City Hall has been very creative when it comes to attracting vacationers, with large crowds attending their annual International Fireworks Festival and the New Year celebrations. For the Songkran festival (Thai New Year in April) an estimated 1 million enjoyed the world’s biggest water pistol fight here. Obviously the weather is another major bonus and the region is pleasant and mainly sunny for 365 days a year. The resort also operates seven days so there are really no mid week down times, although Thais from Bangkok love to visit over the weekends.
30kms of Coast Line
Pattaya has the majority of its properties for sale dotted along the coastline stretching over 30 kms from Wongamat Beach in the north down to Bang Saray in the South East. Land prices have risen, so although some inshore projects are still offering sub one million studios, developers are now having to offer more to attract investors who will be paying more per square metre for the condo. The latest trend has been for large themed resorts aimed at providing all in facilities for families. They include accommodation with lazy rivers, go kart tracks, playgrounds and themed pools and food outlets. A latest project is themed around the Cote D’Azur while another creates an Italian village.

For every villa or town house sold here, they will sell 50 condos. The majority of real estate sold here ranges from 2-4 million baht although luxury apartments in certain areas can push that figure up to Baht15 million.
Chinese are Investing
There is a similarity to Dubai here, in the sense that the coast line in Pattaya is starting to attract high rise iconic buildings aimed at overseas buyers with that added bit of Bling Bling.
The Russians and Europeans have dominated the market over the past few years, although the Chinese have now started to invest here as well. In fact Thailand expects to attract up to 10 million Chinese per year over the next few years.
The city is now promoting family vacations has just opened not will open
The Eastern Seaboard has also attracted a number of major international brands
with several Korean, Chinese and Japanese running massive factories across this region. Their executives all need first class housing and apartments which has helped to fuel the property market. The rental market is also strong with many renters especially retires and workers taking one year contracts. Of course you can get a higher rental from tourists taking one week to one month slots too, however long term renters are preferred. People do like to return to Pattaya on a regular basis, especially to play the regions 23 golf courses. This coupled with the influx of a large expat population keen to retiree here and a the large number of Bangkok based Thai buyers looking for second homes or holiday apartments, means Pattaya’s real estate will flourish in years to come.

Income from
Capital in retirement
Most of us in semi, or permanent retirement are reliant, to a lesser or greater extent, on our remaining nest egg and pension to provide us with an income that will keep the proverbial wolf from the door.
By Tim Whiteley
L
ooking back, in recent years, the results of leaving our hard earned cash to the vagaries of the World’s Stock Market would have sent a shudder through most peoples’ spine. Banks are paying next to nothing, so where does that leave those of us that require a reasonable return on our Investments, without risking the shirt off our back? Some of the Funds that have shone brightly throughout the Financial crisis and beyond are those that are now commonly referred to as “NonCorrelated”, which simply means they are not connected to the Stock Markets. In real terms, this generally means Investments that are in niche Sectors, where the demand curve is very strong, at least for the medium term. There are a number of examples of Fund Managers operating in such Sectors that have shown themselves to be extremely resilient to the economic turmoil. There is also a reasonable selection of good, broad based, Managed Funds with holdings spread across a number

of Asset Classes, which have benefitted from the intrinsic diversification of the holdings. In addition, there are some good ‘Warren Buffetesque’ style Funds which do invest in the Stock Markets but with the caveat that they hold only ‘Blue Chip’ Stock. The concept’s modus operandi is to manage Investments by carefully buying and selling, only where necessary, with a view to capturing a good chunk of the Market upsides, whilst minimising downturns. Take an example that probably applies to large numbers of Expatriates around the World. They have perhaps sold a house in their home country and purchased one abroad and, in addition, have other assets that amount to several hundred thousand Pounds/Dollars, excluding pensions.
Let’s take a test case:
Mr. X has a house and 300,000 GBP in cash from savings. Applying those Funds to a Bank deposit, he is likely, in the current climate, to receive perhaps 2% - 2.5% on a 3 year fixed term deposit, which would result in an income of 6,000 – 7,000 GBP/
USD from his lump sum. As an alternative, certain non-correlated and Managed Funds, available through major International Institutions, have conservatively achieved around 6%, net of all management costs. That same man has now increased his interest income from 6,000 or 7,000 GBP/USD per annum to 18,000 GBP/ USD. This is significant, for those of us looking to preserve our Capital, whilst still maintaining a decent lifestyle. Our feeling is that carefully selected Funds have provided a real alternative for those trying to make their assets work for them. The Fund examples I’ve mentioned have slightly different risk profiles. Nonetheless, they could all be described as between ‘cautious’ and ‘balanced’. This approach often results in relatively stable, consistent results. In summary, individuals can look further afield than bank deposits to improve returns, without taking giant leaps up the ‘risk’ ladder. Arriving in Pattaya especially if you are new in town can be a bit overwhelming, particular if you are here on vacation or maybe starting your retirement. Many have friends already in town, however if you plan to take in some of the 23 odd golf courses in the region, finding some playing partners would be the first step.

All within 25-80 minutes from central Pattaya are 25 golf courses offering some amazing challenges for golfers of all handicaps from beginners to professionals. Literally every type of challenge is here in Pattaya, from the genuine championship golf courses such as Siam Country Club’s Old Course to the whacky Wangjuntr country course, with animals and two greens per hole. Over the following pages we have listed the twenty one local courses around the region that are open to the public. Of course there is also the famous Amata Springs course near Chonburi, home of the Thailand Golf Championships, however this is a member’s only course so we have not included it in our list. Verging on the border of Pattaya, but still only a 90 minute drive from Pattaya is Royal Lakeside Golf Resort, a links style course and also Bangpakong Riverside. So you could say there are nearly 24 courses to test your skills nearby. Each entry will give you a brief description of the club and course plus we include website and telephone numbers as well. Birdies describe either a great hole or some good points to take in. Bogeys
will explain any downsides such as a difficult hole or a poor facility. Watch out for is our way of giving you the heads up on some special feature at the course. We have not included prices as they can change during the seasons. Best bet is to call ahead and see if the selected club is running any promotions. We know you will have a lot of fun
playing golf in Pattaya and luckily apart from a few rainy days the courses can be played 365 days a year. Apart from our magazine do check out our website www.thepattayagolfer.com as we will be up dating course reports and information regularly. Do give us your feedback by going on line and sending us your own report. Enjoy!!!

Bangpra Golf Club is the one of the oldest golf courses in Thailand.
Crystal Bay Golf Resort This 27-hole Golf Resort course was designed by Japanese designed Thai Takenaka and opened for play in 1988. It is located near Sriracha some 45 minutes from Pattaya and 1.5 hours from Bangkok. Described as a Hawaiian style course with palm tree lined holes, Crystal Bay has good tee boxes, lush fairways and fair greens.
Birdies: A longish course but with some birdie opportunities. Bogeys: The course has some of the most difficult greens to putt in Thailand Watch out for‌.Tourists in particular will enjoy playing alongside monkeys who frequent a couple of the holes here!
Birdies: The rates charged make this a popular stop for locals and expats, and it does provide a fun round of golf close to the sea. Watch out for: Several birdie able holes and some potential holes in one here. Birdies: Perhaps one of the most spectacular holes on course B is the 4th a 403 yard parClub 4 off a raised tee Burapha Golf down across a small lake onto a large landing area. Also the last 4 holes on D course are good fun with plenty of birdie opportunities. Watch Out For‌. Course D takes in the highest part of the course with spectacular views across the valley to its neighbor Laem Chabang Golf Club.
Bogeys: Locker room is a bit old fashion, but is clean and has adequate showers etc. Summing Up: Overall if you want a number of challenges at a fair price then Burapha ticks all the boxes. There is a well-equipped driving range and putting greens plus male and female locker rooms, a pro shop and club restaurant. www.buraphagolfthailand.com
A well maintained 36 hole golf club located only 30km north of Pattaya makes Burapha Golf Club in Chonburi Thailand a popular stop for locals and tourists all year round. Designed by course architect Gary Panks and tour professional David Graham, they have cleverly incorporated the hilly countryside to create four sets of challenging nine holes. The West course is 7,100 yards and the East is 7,300 yards The club has hosted several championships including the Singha Pattaya Open which uses course B and D.

The local Pattaya Sports Club have also added silver tees just behind the Red Tees for their older players, who did not want the idea of playing off the ladies tees, but need that extra few yards to give them a chance of a good score. This course is very well maintained and the greens play quite fast as well. The caddies are very knowledgeable and many also play golf.

The Emerald Located approximately 40 minutes’ drive east of Pattaya just past Bang Chang, this modest 18 hole course was supposedly designed way back by Sir Nick Faldo. A genuine country course with several single track holes, giving you the feel of playing in a peaceful ‘Hobbit’ style forest. The course which is actually carved through a pristine rain forest with mature trees, has it good and bad days but is always busy as their pricing is reasonable. Birdies: A very pleasant golfing experience, with not so many bunkers but lots of mature trees lining the fairways
Greenwood Golf Club Located around 40 minutes north of Pattaya , this country style 27 hole course (A,B and C nine holes) opened in 2007 was designed by the legendary Peter Thompson 5 times British Open Champion. The locker rooms and showers were clean, and although the restaurant was a bit basic, the menu was extensive. Watch Out For...we especially liked the third and eight holes on Course A where you are driving downhill with a second shot over a valley with a small stream up to a raised green surrounded by bunkers.

Birdie: A great starting hole with a sloping green down to a lake.

The name “Jack Nicklaus” is very well known for the golfers all over the world, and this is one of his best designers anywhere, which he likes to recommend...
Course A (Mountain) according to the landscape of the course, the player has to cross over several hills with sloping fairways.
It is now has been 20 years old since the course opened, and it still preserves a very good layout. The course itself has been improved using Paspalum on the fairways which are same as tee boxes, and the greens with 9.0 speed Tiff Eagle.
Course B (Lake) has 9 holes with water hazards instead of the forest bunkers on the A Course. The outstanding hole here is hole 6 B, where players have to play down through the hill with the big lake between the fairways and green.
The golf course has 27 holes, separated into course A, B and C. Each course has its own outstanding characteristics and each is named by geography.
The course C (Valley) 9 holes are different from course A and B, which are integrated into the mountain and lake. Since the fairways are slightly narrower, and there are a lot of water hazards this course C offers the most difficult challenge.

The Old Course boosts an 18 hole Championship course, and has hosted many golfing events such as the Thailand Open four times, Asian Golf Circuits and the latest a world class tournament “Honda LPGA Thailand”. The Old Course was constructed back in September 1969, originally designed by I. Izumi, and has just been completely renovated with Mr. Lee Schmidt of Schmidt-Curley Design Inc. as a course architect. A popular grass, Seashore Paspalum, was chosen for the fairways and Novotek for the greens.
In addition, the 101 bunkers are there for beauty and challengers for all golfers alike. Only 15 minutes from Pattaya and 75 minutes via motorway from Bangkok, the club is well worth a visit. Birdies: This course has some smallish occasional water hazards to negotiate and fewer than usual bunkers that are a bit larger than normal, and there are several dogleg holes demanding that you position your tee shots carefully. Bogeys : This golf course sits on foothill terrain that makes it quite challenging, with sloping fairways and greens. Even the avid golfer may find it challenging to play their normal shots on this course. Watch out for: Club house restaurant serving Thailand, China, Japan, and the local food, wine, beer, soft drinks, plus they have a Jacuzzi to get rid of those aches.
Birdies: Great place to practice on some fairly tricky greens. Watch out for: Beginners may hold you up. Bogey : Not in tip top condition, but the greens are well maintained.

Opened in 2008 this monster 27 hole course was designed by Scmidt – Curley Design and hosted the 2009 Honda LPGA Thailand and also the unique Singha Amazing Thailand Caddie Championship finals. There is a good driving range to allow players to warm up first, along with a large putting green and practice area near the first tees.
Carts are compulsory and necessary here as it is quite hilly. There are quite a lot of WOW factor holes here and to be honest whether you play the 3,736 yard Sugar Cane course, the 3,752 yard Tapioca course or the 3,645 yards Pineapple course they all offer some wonderful challenges.

St Andrews 2000 This is an extremely long course playing at 7,700yards to par 74, as it features two massive par 6’s. It is part of a 72 holes resort sharing its clubhouse with Rayong Green Valley and Silky Oaks. English born golf course architect Desmond Muirhead has created one of Pattaya’s most spectacular golf courses, as St Andrews 2000 was built to replicate a Scottish links course. Located in Rayong, it is about 40 minutes from Pattaya.

Birdies: There is a certain thrill when you look down from a high tee box to a valley below with humps and hollows, knowing that you have to drive with a degree of accuracy. Risk and reward is the name of the game here! Bogeys: The facilities although perhaps a little old fashion, are quite adequate. Watch out for: There are two par 6’s, both over 800 yards, claimed to be the World’s longest par 6! Good luck if you par them!
Birdies: Hole No 1 is a par 4 408 yard par 4 where if you want you can tee off on the roof of the drinks kiosk down into the valley below. (A Kodak moment perhaps!) However the signature hole has to be No14 on the Highland’s course…..tee box has to be 100Metres above the fairway. Watch out for: To offer golfers 36 holes, both Valley and Highland courses have two separate greens on each hole. When you arrive they give you a left hand or right hand score card so you know what to play on that round. Bogeys: The greens here offer an additional challenge as many have mounds, boulders or even a pond slap bang in the middle, so beware and ask your caddy for advice before taking your final approach shot.
