The Sunday event was a four man team scramble where all 104 players had to wear military attire. The winner of the fancy dress competition appeared as Kaiser Wilhelm complete with a working field gun capable of firing a golf ball over 300 yards powered by compressed air. Only in Pattaya!!!

attaya Based LPGA Star.... Thidapa Suwannapura
Thidapa (Nickname Jasmine) was born on 20th November 1992, and is the only Pattaya based Thai female professional golfer on the LPGA tour. A Ramkhamhaeng University graduate, she qualified for the Honda LPGA Thailand as an amateur in 2006, 2008 and 2010. She is the winner of the 2008 Hong Kong Ladies Amateur, the 2009 Srixon Junior International by Jack Newton, in Australia, and also won the 2010 Malaysia Amateur Open, the 2010 Handa Junior Masters, and the 2010 Riverwoods Junior Championship, in the Netherlands. She turned professional in 2011. Suwannapura finished 8th at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open in the 2013 season and won the Hero Women’s Indian Open in November 2013 by three strokes, winning $45,000.
Thidapa Suwannapura “Jasmine”
On the 2013 LPGA Tour she made 14 cuts out of 21 events. She joined full time on the LPGA Tour in 2013, so this will be her third season. She was brought up in Bangkok, but moved to Pattaya a couple of years ago with her retired parents. Thidapa told us “ Our Bangkok home suffered badly during the floods, so me and my parents bought a house in Pattaya and we all moved here a couple of years ago.’ When she practiced in Bangkok she mainly used Rose Garden Golf Course west of the city and occasionally Suwan Golf Course . ‘However in fact the first course she can remember ever playing as a child was Plutaluang Navy Course. My Dad was working and he liked to travel, so he would wake me up at 3am, drive around and play golf outside Bangkok.’ She remembers it being a very challenging course, but she still likes it. She has also played Phoenix Gold a few times, as well as Plantation and Khao Kheow.
13

Honda LPGA Thailand 2015.
She told us that although she lives in Pattaya, as she is constantly touring she only gets to stay here around a month a year. She also rents an apartment with a friend in Atlanta, where she heads to if she has a week off. Although she has never had a full time coach, her Dad has coached her, but when she travels she is basically by herself. She even handles all her own sponsorship deals and travel arrangements too. ‘I am always thinking how to improve myself, what have I done wrong and work on these areas myself. At the moment I am considering taking on a fitness coach. I mainly travel with my caddie or my friends, but do not have a big team behind me.’
Champion at the Delhi Golf Club.
Fan Club at Old Course.
Thidapa is very much an international player and she hangs out with many of the Korean, Spanish and American players. Her co players were asking her where should they go when they were over here for the Honda LPGA Thailand. ‘ They were asking me and as I really don’t know too much, I was having to search myself on Google. She was planning to go to Art in Paradise.’ She recently took time off between the seasons to have Laser treatment for her eyes at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. ‘ It took a bit of time to adjust, but now I can see a lot clearer and it is already helping me to read the greens much better.’
Volvik Team Member.
She has already won $384,483 just on the LPGA tour and is constantly making the cut. I am sure she we will be back in the winner’s circle soon, so any Pattaya sponsors looking for a top Thai player should snap her up soon. She is already one of the Volik LPGA Tour players. We wish this likeable LPGA star good luck in 2015.

Thongchai Jaidee By Mike Bridge From his humble beginnings, this likably 46 year old Thai pro has blazed a trail for golf in Thailand.

with numberous records to his name. Thongchai did not turn professional until he was 30 as he served as a Ranger in the Royal Thai Army, regularly making parachute drops and was committed to represent Thailand in the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok.
S
ince then he has won three Order of Merit crowns and 13 career victories on the Asian Tour. In 2004 he made history as the first Thai golfer to win an event on The European Tour with victory in the Malaysian Open, and then successfully defended the title in 2005. Currently he has won six European Tour events. In fact his first victory earned a personal audience with Thailand’s former Prime Minister, who gave him a diplomatic passport to expedite his future ease of movement between countries on The European Tour.
So far he has earnt Euro 9,747,390 in prize money and has invested his own funds in developing a successful golf academy in his home town Lop Buri north of Bangkok. We caught up with this globetrotting super star when he flew into take part in the True Thailand Classic in Hau Hin. He finished second behind Andrew Dodt.
Currently you are ranked 43 on the World rankings so what are your goals for 2015?
Winning Captain at Eurasia Cup in 2014.
18
Constantly in demand.
19
Thongchai: Well I try to improve and become better than last year, so if I play the big events you can jump up quickly. For the last few weeks I have been in the top twenty to twenty five, so it’s getting better. This year for example we are already confirmed for the British Open and I will also be playing my forth Masters too, so all this ranking helps.
You now have been with your English caddie for two and half years, is he teaching you English and are you teaching him Thai? Thongchai: He speaks a little Thai, but as we are not often in Thailand , we mainly speak in English and we understand each other. Certainly my English is better, and as it is naturally the international language, I needed to improve.
After your defeat to Colin Montgomerie’s European team at Black Mountain for the Royal Trophy, you were
captain of the victorious Asean team in Malaysia last year against Miguel Jimenez’s strong European team. Will the EurAsia Cup return soon? Thongchai: I think it will be back in 2016 and I am trying to also get a place in the President’s Cup, but I am not sure yet.
Currently you are ranked 19th on the IGF Olympic rankings with Kiradech Aphibarnrat at 37, Poranong Phatlum is at 15th and Ariya Jutanugarn is at 21st on the Women’s Rankings. Thailand therefore has a very good chance of getting a medal? Thongchai: Yes and I am very excited about the Olympics and to be able to represent my country. In fact I am also on the Olympic Committee as well. Two months ago the PGA asked me to represent the Asian region.
Faithful British Caddie. PR stunt at Black Mountain.
20
Do you think that as the caddies are very much part of the team that they should get a medal too? Thongchai: I have no idea about this. To be honest we have been mainly talking about how the players will play and all about the rules, and about the caddies too. We all met recently in Dubai and we also talk on the phone.
You obviously played golf all over Thailand. What courses do you like in Pattaya? Thongchai: Obviously I have played Amata Springs in Chonburi many times, plus Siam Country Club. In fact I love Siam Plantation and the Old Course, but so far I have not had time to play their new Waterside course. I also played Laem Chabang a long time ago.
Now you used to be an ambassador for a real estate project in Pattaya? Thongchai : Yes I am still an owner of a condo in Northpoint. Although personally we have no time to stay there, we have in fact rented it and it is good to keep property as an investment there.
I am also an owner of a villa overlooking the 10th hole at Black Mountain too and sometimes try to
spend time there as well as my home in Lop Buri.

Course report Beautiful
Burapha by Callum Mackie
Burapha has been my favourite Pattaya golf course for many years. Home of the annual Pattaya Open and a former host of the Thailand Open, this 36 hole resort style course only 30 minutes drive from central Pattaya, combines charm, beauty and challenge.
22
T
here can be few better views in Asia than the vista from the high point on D course across to the Gulf of Siam. Designed by Americans Gary Panks and David Graham, Burapha Golf Club is laid out on hilly terrain. The course plays as two 18 hole layouts, nine holes known as A,B,C and D. Both start with front nines that are relatively flat before climbing the hill on the back nines. Although there is no compulsory cart policy here, it is quite hilly, so unless you have the energy, best to let the golf cart take the strain. When the course is set up for the Pattaya Open, the two back nines are combined provide a tough 7,200 yard challenge and the rough is allowed to grow around the bunkers. Woe betide the wayward shot that hits the top of a Burapha bunker!
A good golf course flows naturally from one hole to the next, and Burapha scores highly on this count, with no long journeys from leaving the green to reaching the next tee. The natural mounds and lakes create a sense of solitude separating the fairways, so that the course never seems crowded. The black and white swans that inhabit the lakes are third generation Burapha residents. It is difficult to choose my favourite Burapha hole so I will take the liberty of choosing a few. Course A 6 is a tricky par 3 with water ahead and right. It plays around 180 yards off the blue tee position and the tee shot must be straight. B 4 is the signature hole with an elevated tee presenting a clear view to a green surrounded by a bunker and water.
C 9 requires a straight drive over water then a dangerous second to the elevated green guarded by a nasty bunker. The two level green rejects any ball that is hit too hard if the approach has gone over the back. The short par 4 D 7 is reachable by the big hitters and so are the bunkers surrounding it. The green is only a few paces wide so the approach has to be perfect. I have seen many grown men cry after taking a triple bogey here! Burapha caddies are, in my opinion, the best trained in Pattaya. The caddy master puts new recruits through a rigorous induction programme which rejects any that cannot reach the required standard. In fact a number of the caddies here at Burapha are decent golfers and the General Manager actually encourages them to play golf with the customers.

Solar Golf hold a few tournaments where we team up Burapha caddies with our guests to make a fun day out. Everyone has a great round! Course condition, especially the greens, is consistently good. The course has a full set of John Deere equipment for each nine and the course maintenance is personally supervised by the General Manager – Mr Mike. He spent 12 years in the USA and is the complete host for visiting golf groups. So in my opinion Burapha Golf Club ticks all the boxes for a great day out. A challenging course that is very playable by golfers of all abilities, beautiful scenery, excellent course preparation and caddies that are professional and great fun.

The weather was very hot and humid at times, however all the players told us they thought the course had never been in better condition. Gym Work Paying Off Mo has improved her driving distance by adding over 10 yards in the past two years. At 258 yards she is currently ranked 19th on the tour. Mae meanwhile is well known as a long hitter and is currently ranked 2nd behind Yani Tsang at 275 yds. Can you believe she actually drives further than Kevin Na, Justin Leonard and Ben Curtis on the PGA tour! Both explained that they have been working on their body weight and strength in the gym to get stronger, and their coach has been helping them too.
W
e caught up with these talented young Thais LPGA stars, 20 year old Moriya (Mo) and 19 year old Ariya Jutanugarn (Mae) at the Siam Country Club. Mo actually finished her last LPGA tournament (she managed to play in an incredible 27 tournaments on the tour in 2014, equal first of all the tour players) two weeks before the LPGA Qualifying School , so she decided to stay on an extra two weeks in Florida to be with and support her younger sister. ‘ Everyone gets very stressed that week, and I remember how stressed I was when I had to qualify, ‘said Mo. ‘I just told Mae to calm down and play her normal game.’ Her advise seemed to work, as Mae eventually came third out of 180 finalists in 2015 school, which is a great achievement.
36
Mo in Thai Traditional Costume.
Before when they were on different tours both parents were constantly on the road. Now Mum has taken over the duties, while Dad is back home looking after their Golf Pro Shop at the Rose Garden Golf Club. Mae said ‘ Because my sister has been to most of the courses on tour a couple of times, she helps me a lot as most of these courses I have never played before.’ As they are constantly travelling they sometimes rent a house normally in Florida instead of staying everywhere in hotels.
Full Time LPGA Stars
Sports Personalities
Now the sisters have their full LPGA cards for 2015 and both agreed it was like going back to their junior golf days, when they used to travel and spend time together.
Back home a lot of Thais look up to the successful sports personalities especially in Badminton and Soccer. There must be a lot of girls back home keen to follow in your steps? Do you feel you have a responsibility? They definitely felt good that people are now following them and that more and more girls would like to eventually get on the tour maybe.
Mo said, ‘It was like losing my sister for a couple of years, as we played on different tours.’ Now they tend to have the same schedule for nearly 50% of the time and they also share the same coach and trainer. They also now have full time top caddies on their bags with Mae’s caddie having worked with Angela Stanford . Currently Mo’s stats are slightly better than Mae’s. For example Mae’s driving accuracy is 57% while Mo’s is 83%, however they are almost the same in greens in regulation. At the recent Founders Cup in Arizona they both tied at 17th to earn US$17,000 each.
Mo told us that it is great that she is inspiring people. ‘I remember looking up to a lot of players on the LPGA tour. Thongchai Jaidee was another golfer who I admired when I was younger. He started at the bottom and he has worked hard to get to the top of his game and he has definitely inspired us.’ Mae held a golf clinic during their visit to Siam Country Club’s Old Course, especially encouraging juniors to perhaps follow in her footsteps.
Press Confrences with Pornalong Phatlum. Both said they really would like the chance to play for Thailand in the Olympics in 2016 in Brazil. Currently Pornanong Phatlum is currently ranked 14th on the Olympic rankings for women and Mae is ranked 20th currently, which would mean she has an excellent chance of playing in Brazil along with Thongchai ranked 21st and Kiradech ranked 36th. Sisters Attract Big Sponsors There are very few brother or sisters playing sport at the top level . Williams sisters in tennis and Molinari brothers in Golf, so the Jutanugarn sisters can expect to gain a lot of extra publicity
where ever they play. They are both managed by IMG who also handle many of the top stars including Thailand’s number one golfer Thongchai Jaidee. Already the sisters have numerous lucrative sponsorship deals and recently added the Betagro Group to their list. Mo is already a star on the LPGA tour having amassed over US$677,194 in career earnings alone. Younger sister now is already ranked No2 on the 2015 LPGA Rookie list, having amassed of US$229,024 so far this season is ranked 8th on the 2015 LPGA money list. Although the girls have spent most of their playing
careers on the road, their home course is Amata Springs, where they practice when away from the tour. Apart from the Old Course they have also played at Siam Country Club’s Plantation as well, and Khun Mae said she had also played Leam Chabang too. Both have since flown to the states and have been in the top 20 with Mo finishing 12th recently in the Kia Classic. I am sure it will not be long before one of them will be lifting an LPGA Trophy so expect to see a lot of these two smiling sisters on TV in the future.

Course report
Wangjuntr Golf Park
The Wangjuntr Golf Park is one of Asia’s hidden gems. Opened in 1999, park is in fact the correct term, as their signature Highland’s course is actually built around an animal sanctuary with deer, ostrich and cattle roaming across the spectacular countryside.
38
Wangjuntr, 75 minutes from Pattaya or 130kms from Bangkok actually consists of three courses, the Valley (18 holes), Highland (18 holes) and Thailand’s newest course called the Jungle course (18 holes). To offer golfers 36 holes, both Valley and Highland courses have two separate greens on each hole, so when you arrive they give you a left hand or right hand score card, so you know what to play on that day.
The Valley Course plays over 7,197 yards including 5 par 5’s and 5 par 3’s, the longest of which plays an amazing 245 yards! The interesting 17th par 3 is located on a cliff, and hits down to a well guarded green while offering panoramic views of the region. Probably the best hole on this course is the 11th, a par 5 measuring 694 yards, and is one of the longest par 5’s in Thailand. Only the two par 6’s found down the road at St. Andrews 2000 play longer.
The new Jungle Course, which only opened last October, was in great condition when we were showed around by General Manager Mr. Danai Singhaseni. At 7,631 yards it is in a wonderful peaceful valley offering wide greens, water hazards, boulders and perhaps the longest par 3 we have seen, a mighty 280 yards from the back tee. According to Khun Danai perhaps the easiest of the three courses to reach a reasonable score. Highland’s 4th Green.
39
However a visit to Wangjuntr would not be complete until you have experienced their Highland Course, perhaps one of the most memorable courses I have played. Here the right hand greens play 7,646 yards from the back tees or 5,601 yards from the front tees, the longest layout in the region. Left hand greens play 7,633 yards or 5,637 yards from the front. Safari Fun Having checked in at the pro shop, you are taken up to the Highland’s own club house “The Highland House” by open truck with all the caddies and golfers together. Gates are opened and you feel like you are on a Disney safari trip with views of wild animals everywhere. It takes 10 minutes to arrive where you pick up your golf cart for another five minute trip to the first tee. The fun starts at Hole No 1, a 408 yard par 4 where if you want you can tee off on the roof of the drinks kiosk down into the valley below. (Definitely a Kodak moment here!) Most of the greens here offer an additional challenge as many have grassy mounds, boulders or even a
40
pond slap bang in the middle. So beware and ask your caddy for advice before taking your final approach shot. Spectacular Views The views from both the 3rd and 4th greens are spectacular, with the countryside stretching as far as the eye can see. Be prepared for a lot of hill climbing as golf carts are not allowed on to the fairways. Exercise is in fact part of the round, and you will definitely feel you have conquered the course at the end of 18 holes. Hole 7 looks simple and is a short par 4 at 326 yards but beware of the rocks in the middle of the green here. Hole 8 is perhaps the most frustrating par 3 at Wangjuntr, as the right hand tee is obscured by bushes to the right of the tee box and the thin green is raised up surrounded by slopes, and is aptly given the name Edge of Life. After a cool drink or snack back at Highland House, the real adventure begins with the back nine. A fairly gentle par 4 hole 10 gets you in the mood for the fun around the corner. Hole 11 is called Himalaya and their website notes strongly advise that you don’t ‘bite off more than you can
Truck to HillTop. chew’. Once you get your breath back, another Kodak moment starts on the 12th tee, as you look down on to the scenery below. The owner’s palatial mansion lies here, so he picked one of the best views. Led Zeppelin Moment ‘Stair Way to Heaven’ is the name given to the par 4 13th, which literally has steps along the fairway before reaching a fairly long but undulating green above. No Led Zeppelin music here, but great fun anyway! The star attraction has to be the 14th where the golf cart needs all it power to get you to the top. Difficult to describe this hole in mere words, known simple as ‘THE BEAST’. Your view from any of the tees will transcend any golf hole you’ve seen before. Your tee shot will

drop ‘hopefully’ down-down-down to the waiting thin ‘strip’ of fairway below, where the true delights of this hole will suddenly hit you! Hole 17th known as the ‘Dwarf ’s Kingdom’ is cleverly designed and if you look carefully you will see that the green is shaped like Thailand and from the tee whether the hole position is in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, you will have your work cut out to get close to either of the city’s! A fitting finish to this wonderful course, the 18th known as Huge Heart will have you shooting up hill from the tees towards a welcoming fairway. Then your approach shot to the upper or lower level of the majestic green will require your full concentration right up to your last full swing.
Stairway to Heaven 13th.
Forget your Scorecard! To be honest for once forget the scorecard and just take in the wonderful scenery, the challenging terrain and the quirky if not sometimes amusing greens. Don’t expect a low score here, but I am sure you and your mates will remember your round at the Highland for a very long time with fondness.
The caddies are very friendly, but not all speak English and some may not even understand the game of golf, but go with the flow. The pro shop is adequate but does not stock a large range of clothing, and the locker rooms were clean and functional. The club’s restaurant although not fine dining had great local Thai food,
cold beers and very friendly staff, and the rest is definitely needed before heading home. Remember to check with the club before booking, as all three courses are closed on Mondays and on other days they sometimes open just two tracks. However the good news is

For such a large number of holes, the club was in very good shape and their package prices are also very reasonable. Land of
SMILeS
IT’s a well know saying, thailand is the land of smiles. on some golf days the only thing that gets you through a terrible round in pattaya is the caddies relentless smile.
A
tradition all over Thailand, all golf courses have caddies as compulsary. When you arrive at the course you pay for the green fee and the caddie fee which is usually around THB350 for 18 holes. Some courses do allow you to walk so your caddie will put your bag onto a trolley. However most courses have compulsory carts especially those that are hilly such as Laem Chabang or Siam Country Club Plantation.
43
44
Caddies particularly in this region are well trained and most will know their own 18 holes backwards and can read the greens like a popular paperback. Apart from giving you all the distances on the fairways, your caddie will clean your clubs and drive the cart. At the end of your round it is customary to tip her for all the hard work. Normally you give between THB300-500 however if you had a great score then more is welcomed. Remember this is their full time job so they rely on your tips!!!

BLACK MOUNTAIN.
Hua Hin
Seaside town
of Golf
Hua Hin the Royawl seaside town was recently voted Best Golf Destination in Asia and Australasia by IAGTO, a very worthy accolade.
T
here are in fact approximately eleven courses within the region, and as it is roughly only a 3.5-4 hour drive from Pattaya, depending on the traffic, it is a great place for a quick golf vacation. Although top of most people’s list would be a round at Black Mountain, the area also boasts several other excellent courses including Banyan, Majestic Creek, Sea Pines, Springfield, Palm Hills and Imperial Lakes View. The city is also the home of the country’s oldest course, The Royal Hua Hin, built by Scottish railway engineers in 1924. Located next to the famous Hua Hin railway station, it is an old fashioned style course right in the heart of the city.
14th Signature Hole at Royal Hua Hin.
54
With the recent additions of Black Mountain, now hosting the European tour’s Thailand Classic and Banyan Golf Resort the town has become a magnet for golfers.
Last year the Centara Grand Hua Hin hosted Asia’s largest Ametaur Golf tournament with over 500 competitors flying in from across the globe. In fact don’t be surprised at night in the city to see locals pushing carts loaded with cheap golf balls. The town is definitely gone golf crazy! OK Black Mountain’s facilities are hard to match and these 18 holes are in immaculate condition. The course can be quite windy so do listen to the very well trained caddies, as they can save you from going astray. The variation in elevation make this very much a WOW factor set up with all holes offering some great risk and reward holes. Although most will head for their Championship Course, do try their award winning par 3 nine holes, which is probably the best in Asia. Great way to work on your short game here. Also the club’s pros shop is immense and even the waitresses here are dressed in golf and black with high heels. Black Mountain is a class act.
55
Banyan’s Award Winning Clubhouse.
Another reason why you should venture to Hua Hin, is to experience the Banyan Golf Resort. Here you can enjoy a country style layout with a stunning Thai style clubhouse. They were in fact the first course in Thailand to have GSM on all golf carts so you can even order a beer to your cart. I liked their course notes for hole No1 which simply state ‘Aim for the Coconut tree and beware of the Pineapples growing in the rough!’ It really sums up what will be a very memorable golf challenge. After these two courses the other clubs are fine but are really not in the same class. Sea Pines or to give it its official name The Royal Thai Army Sports Centre (Suan Son Pradipat) has several holes running alongside the sea, while the other holes are accessed under a tunnel close to the main road.
56
BLACK MOUNTAIN’s 18 Holes.
There is the Jack Nicholas designed Springfield Golf Course and Imperial Lake View both accessed on the bypass road north near Cha Am.
Finally many especially locals enjoy driving the 25 minutes out of town to play Majestic Creek another country style course currently offering 18 holes, but we understand that their 9 hole Waterfall course should reopen soon.
Both clubs are used every January to host the Asian Tour’s Qualifying school so are worthy of a visit.
During the low season many head there to take part in the Hua Hin & Cha Am Golf Festival when rates
are very low at most courses from 1st August to 30th September 2015. To sum up Hua Hin has everything to offer from seas side to mountain layouts and even the oldest course in the region too. Enjoy your time in this Royal Seaside Town!

Home to the King of Thailand who has his summer palace here, Hua Hin and its neighbor Cha Am offer several kilometers of sandy beaches. The Royal Retreat

There is a floating market and some combine a trip to the River Kwai around 3 hours drive North West from Hua Hin.

Cape Dara.
59
If you prefer to step out of the foyer straight into the action, then Central Pattaya has many 2-5 star hotels to select. The major chains are operating successfully here including Holiday Inn, Amari, J W Marriott, Hard Rock and Mercure all offering 4 and 5 star accommodation. There are also numerous 2-3 star options plus pubs offering great economic packages. Some golfers like to stay on Second Road near to all the nightlife and many choose The 83 roomed Tim Boutique hotel on Soi 14. If shopping is one of your requirements, then the ideal location has to be the award winning Hilton Pattaya, that sits above the Central Festival Shopping Centre right in the centre of Beach Road. Apart from staying in Central Pattaya there are also a number of other areas worth checking, including the Wongamat Beach area west of the city. Here you will discover Cape Dara and the Pullman Pattaya both with an excellent beachside restaurants. Just to the east of the centre of the city is Pratamnak. Here the Royal Cliff Resort actually has three main

If you crave for more peace and quiet check out the Sea Sand & Sun Resort just past the Cartoon Network water park in Bang Saray.
Centara Pratamnak is another new hotel worth a visit with an excellent roof top pool and bar, and it is close to the city’s only par 3 golf course at the nearby Asia Hotel. Jomtien Beach stretches for several kilometres east of Pratamnak and is popular with Russians. Many choices mainly in the 2-3 star variety here, but 4 star D Varee Jomtien is an exception, with great views from their roof top bar.
With the low season upon us most hotels are offering great packages, and savvy golfers will know it is always also worth checking with the internet agencies including Agoda and Expedia.

lephants are part of Thai culture and here in Pattaya you can actually help the sick and injured elephants, young and retired, at a private sanctuary on the outskirts of the city. At the Elephant Sanctuary they look after around 30 elephants and you can enjoy a trek through the river, watch a round up, go on ride in a four wheel Land Rover and just enjoy a very friendly atmosphere. www.elephant-village-pattaya.com Most towns and villages across
Thailand still have floating markets and here in Pattaya they have replicated their own version on Sukhumvit Road. In addition to Shopping local crafts there are various options to buy and taste some local delicacies straight from the boats. There are also cultural performances, a dance show, boat rides and a spectacular stage show in the large pool for visitors to appreciate the beauty of music and dance.

Phoenix Gold.
He personally enjoys playing the new Siam Country Club’s Waterside course which he feels is a great comparison compared to the Old Course and Plantation. It is a lot flatter and more like a real golf course, where as the Old Course has a lot of raised greens and your ball can roll 20 yards off when the greens are fast. Plantation it is very sloppy with difficult greens
although it does have a great layout, whereas Waterside offers you a great challenge. I naturally like Phoenix Gold too, which has already up graded two of the three nine holes and has plans to upgrade their Lakes course later this year. It is perfect for all levels as it has short, medium and long tees. He also enjoys playing at Burapha and its neighbour Laem Chabang, and often takes pupils to test their short game at the Asia Pattaya Hotel’s par 3 on Soi 4 in Pratamnak. Some of the holes there though can be quiet tricky.

teve Ellison set up his popular Golf Club in soi LK Metro over eight years ago and they have been running golf three times week since then. This popular Brit is almost as well known for his food as his golf trips. They provide a very varied menu there aptly named The European Tour with full English Breakfasts or Asian Tour with all the popular Thai dishes. They also run some great BBQ’s with I am told some of the best steaks in town. The Golf Club organsies outings at three local courses a week where locals can join a group.
It’s a great country course with crown style greens which are very fast. Also the prices they charge are very good too, even in the high season.’ In the low season he told us they tend to go for the top courses such as Laem Chabang and Siam Country’s Old Course and book them on their sports days. He also likes Khao Kheow too and prefers to offer his clients a variety of challenges throughout the year. Steve Ellison.
His other company Asiabound Golf brings in inbound golfers, and they organise anything from large corporate events to small groups of mates here to play golf. They have contracts with many of the Pattaya hotels and even have four rooms above the Golf Club as well. Steve loves his golf and often arranges golf trips to other Thai regions as well such as Hua Hin and Chang Mai. He has played most of the courses around Pattaya and his favorite course at the moment is Pattavia Century. Steve said, ‘It has had such a transformation over the past two years since Chang Brewery’s took over and we like to support places that are adding to the golf scene.

Brendan Daley GM at Amari.
rendan Daley has been living in Thailand since 2007 and has been working at Amari Pattaya from early 2013. Being located within a very short distance to a large variety of courses, he’s been fortunate enough to play a few rounds and experience some of the best golf courses that Thailand has to offer. He enjoys playing both Laem Chabang and Burapha as both are challenging yet can be forgiving and as a high handicapper he finds this often comes in very handy.
Brendan said,’ Laem Chabang has 27 holes and Burapha 36 holes so there is also great variety. I also enjoy playing Siam Country Club Old Course not because it’s forgiving, but rather if I can have a good round on this course, or even a few good holes, it is definitely rewarding.’ ‘Amari Pattaya is perfectly suited for golfers, whether individuals or groups of any size. We are perfectly located in North Pattaya with good access in and out to the courses and accommodation options to suit any budget’ said Brendan.

part from its excellent all year round climate, it’s many sporting attractions, great cuisine and vibrant night live, Pattaya also attracts a very varied number of visitors. Whereas most European resorts tend to rely on just Europeans visitors, Pattaya because of its location, is close to most major cities across Asia and Australasia. It is also still very popular with Europeans who still like to retiree to the sun. The new group of vacationers now venturing along the beach in their masses are noticeably the Chinese, whose ever growing affluent middle classes are enjoying holidays especially in Thailand which is in some cases close by. Eventually there will be modern express ways linking the two countries. Many developers have now full time Chinese agents sending over buyers who often buy en masse as a family or group of friends. Riviera Wongamat for example apparently has sold over 10% of the high-rise to Chinese investors.
Centric Sea Pattaya.
Local developers are now actively working with some major investment houses in Shanghai and Beijing, where serious funds are available to take large chunks of the projects as prime investments. Although there may be a blip in sales growth at the moment, caused mainly by the lack of Russian buyers, like most of the World the most reliable long term investment is still in ‘Bricks and mortar’ and here in Thailand the same applies. Thailand’s property Industry has been and is very adaptable, and even through the last few years of political unrest, real estate still continues to operate. The current political situation seems to have calmed the country and the corruption seems to be on the decline. In fact the government has started to award contracts to improve the road and rail network with Pattaya now in line for a high speed rail link. Remember Pattaya still attracts over 10 million tourists a year and has over 100,000 expats living in the city. These

figures do not include the number of Thais, especially from Bangkok who love to spend their weekends by the sea. Many especially after the floods in the capital bought villas and condos around the city. With great weather almost 365 days a year, and with the resort operating through all seven days, Pattaya is still the place to invest for personal use or maybe for rental income.
n.b. Property ownership in Thailand is complicated and needs to be understood by investors. For example foreigners cannot own land, but can own 49% of companies that do own the land. Condos have to be owned 51% in Thai names and no more than 49% can be owned by foreigners. In some cases foreigners own Thai companies that own condos, where the quota of foreign ownership is already sold out.
71
The Pattaya market is very different from almost all other Thai regions. For every villa or town house sold here they will sell 50 condos. The majority of real estate sold her ranges from 2-4 million baht although luxury apartments in certain areas can push that figure up to Baht15 million. Trust,
Like a Knight of the Crusades
Protecting your wealth and providing for your loved ones after you’re deceased. By Tim Whiteley
T
he concept of the ‘Trust’ was familiar to the Romans but the origin of the modern trust is Anglo-Saxon and dates back to the Crusades. During prolonged absence from England, a knight would transfer ownership of his property and belongings to a friend or trusted person so that if he should be killed, he could be certain that his wife and children would inherit his estate. Many expatriates will have assets of one form or another that is not their country of domicile, for example bank accounts, property and other assets, and so should consider establishing offshore wealth protection and succession planning. Here we look at ways to protect accumulated wealth during ones’ lifetime and beyond, and also how to mitigate multi-jurisdictional probate issues for beneficiaries. What is a Trust? A modern trust is an established means of safeguarding an individual’s wealth, ensuring their continued access to (and control of) the assets during ones lifetime, and facilitating its safe passage to ones chosen beneficiaries and or future generations. A suitably worded Trust can minimise multi- jurisdictional probate issues, legal expenses and long delays for beneficiaries trying to locate assets in different parts of the world. Having a Trust also removes the need to write a Will in each country where assets are held.
IFA international Co., Ltd Level 33, Interchange 21 399 Sukhumvit Road, Asoke, Bangkok 10110
Assets that can be held in a trust include. Bonds, Stocks and Shares, Bank Accounts, Insurance Policies, Real Estate, Intellectual Property, Company shares, Pension Plans and QROPS. Assets held in trust do not form part of the estate of the settler, and consequently, the trustees are able to use them for the benefit of the trust beneficiaries without going through complex legal procedures. A suitably-worded trust can also help to reduce or eliminate inheritance tax or estate duty liabilities in the future. Who are the Trustees? Professional trustees are appointed at the outset and have legal title to the assets, but no beneficial interest. They are not able to make a profit for themselves out of the assets. the assets are not available to their own creditors, they must use the assets only for the benefit of the beneficiaries, they operate under a fiduciary license in regulated environments Who are the beneficiaries? The person (or entity) setting up the Trust is called the Settlor, and they name the beneficiaries in a Letter of Wishes to the Trustees that clearly sets out the parameters for the Trustees to follow. For example, this may state that children should be provided for by having their education costs fully funded. A spouse, can be named as a beneficiary and provided with an ongoing annual income or lump sum paid directly to their bank account in any country.
Capital Partners International Ltd and QROPS Pension Centre Mobile: +66 (0) 81 696 7909 Tel: +66 (0) 2660 3812, Fax: +66 (0) 2660 3881 Email: timwhiteley@ifainternationalgroup.com Website: www.ifainternationalgroup.com QROPS Website: www.qropspensioncentre.com
Assets can be safeguarded to protect the interests of minors or vulnerable members of the family, thus keeping them separate from other interests. The Settlor remains as a lifetime beneficiary and will therefore be included in the Letter of Wishes. As such, he or she retains the authority to amend the list of beneficiaries, add or remove assets, and even to close the Trust completely should it no longer be required. Golf and boarding school....perhaps not an obvious combination, but it’s proving to be an attractive feature of life at Regents International School This British international boarding school which is located in Pattaya alongside some of the finest golf courses in the world. Head of Admissions at Regents, Dr Tim Eaton explains: “We’re finding that an increasing number of families from Bangkok are choosing to send their children down to our boarding school. They’re tired of seeing their kids spending hours in traffic jams travelling to and from school,
74
suffering from pollution and other urban concerns. At Regents, they can travel on foot from their boarding accommodation to school in 2 minutes, they benefit from fresh air and open space, and they’re receiving an outstanding academic education.” And the link to golf? “Well, there are two links to golf. On one hand, we have a number of students who take advantage of our close proximity to the courses around Pattaya, and we now have some very accomplished
golfers within our student body. On the other hand, the golf-playing executive wishing to visit his son or daughter at the weekend can easily combine 18 holes on a local course with breakfast, lunch or dinner with the kids – golf time and family time rolled into one!” For more information on Regents International School Pattaya, telephone +66 (0)863 412 587 or e-mail admissions@regents-pattaya.co.th

All within 25-80 minutes from central Pattaya are 25 golf courses offering some amazing challenges for golfers of all handicaps from beginners to professionals. Literally every type of challenge is here in Pattaya, from the genuine championship golf courses such as Siam Country Club’s Old Course to the whacky Wangjuntr country course, with animals and two greens per hole. Over the following pages we have listed the twenty one local courses around the region that are open to the public. Of course there is also the famous Amata Springs course near Chonburi, home of the Thailand Golf Championships, however this is a member’s only course so we have not included it in our list. Verging on the border of Pattaya, but still only a 90 minute drive from Pattaya is Royal Lakeside Golf Resort, a links style course and also Bangpakong Riverside. So you could say there are nearly 24 courses to test your skills nearby. Each entry will give you a brief description of the club and course plus we include website and telephone numbers as well.
Birdies describe either a great hole or some good points to take in. Bogeys will explain any downsides such as a difficult hole or a poor facility. Watch out for is our way of giving you the heads up on some special feature at the course. We have not included prices as they can change during the seasons. Best bet is to call ahead and see if the selected club is running any promotions. We know you will have a
lot of fun playing golf in Pattaya and luckily apart from a few rainy days the courses can be played 365 days a year. Apart from our magazine do check out our website www.thepattayagolfer.com as we will be up dating course reports and information regularly. Do give us your feedback by going on line and sending us your own report. Enjoy!!!

Birdies: A longish course but with some birdie opportunities. Bogeys: The course has some of the most difficult greens to putt in Thailand Watch out for‌.Tourists in particular will enjoy playing alongside monkeys who frequent a couple of the holes here!
Birdies: The rates charged make this a popular stop for locals and expats, and it does provide a fun round of golf close to the sea. Course D takes in the highest part of the course with spectacular views across the valley to its neighbor Laem Chabang Golf Club.
Bogeys: Locker room is a bit old fashion, but is clean and has adequate showers etc. Summing Up: Overall if you want a number of challenges at a fair price then Burapha ticks all the boxes. There is a well-equipped driving range and putting greens plus male and female locker rooms, a pro shop and club restaurant. www.buraphagolfthailand.com
A well maintained 36 hole golf club located only 30km north of Pattaya makes Burapha Golf Club in Chonburi Thailand a popular stop for locals and tourists all year round. Designed by course architect Gary Panks and tour professional David Graham, they have cleverly incorporated the hilly countryside to create four sets of challenging nine holes. The local Pattaya Sports Club have also added silver tees just behind the Red Tees for their older players, who did not want the idea of playing off the ladies tees, but need that extra few yards to give them a chance of a good score. This course is very well maintained and the greens play quite fast as well. The caddies are very knowledgeable and many also play golf.

The Emerald Located approximately 40 minutes’ drive east of Pattaya just past Bang Chang, this modest 18 hole course was supposedly designed way back by Sir Nick Faldo. A genuine country course with several single track holes, giving you the feel of playing in a peaceful ‘Hobbit’ style forest. The course which is actually carved through a pristine rain forest with mature trees, has it good and bad days but is always busy as their pricing is reasonable. Birdies: A very pleasant golfing experience, with not so many bunkers but lots of mature trees lining the fairways
Greenwood Golf Club Located around 40 minutes north of Pattaya , this country style 27 hole course (A,B and C nine holes) opened in 2007 was designed by the legendary Peter Thompson 5 times British Open Champion. Watch out for: Some very fast and undulating greens especially on the par 3’s. A very friendly golf outing. Feels like you are playing in a green forest…. very peaceful setting. Bogeys : The locker rooms are very small and old fashioned with have padlocks instead of keys. The club house restaurant is open air so can be humid after a rain storm, but the beers are cool!!!

The locker rooms and showers were clean, and although the restaurant was a bit basic, the menu was extensive. Watch Out For...we especially liked the third and eight holes on Course A where you are driving downhill with a second shot over a valley with a small stream up to a raised green surrounded by bunkers.

The name “Jack Nicklaus” is very well known for the golfers all over the world, and this is one of his best designers anywhere, which he likes to recommend...
Course A (Mountain) according to the landscape of the course, the player has to cross over several hills with sloping fairways.
It is now has been 20 years old since the course opened, and it still preserves a very good layout. The course itself has been improved using Paspalum on the fairways which are same as tee boxes, and the greens with 9.0 speed Tiff Eagle.
Course B (Lake) has 9 holes with water hazards instead of the forest bunkers on the A Course. The outstanding hole here is hole 6 B, where players have to play down through the hill with the big lake between the fairways and green.
The golf course has 27 holes, separated into course A, B and C. Each course has its own outstanding characteristics and each is named by geography.
The course C (Valley) 9 holes are different from course A and B, which are integrated into the mountain and lake. Since the fairways are slightly narrower, and there are a lot of water hazards this course C offers the most difficult challenge.

Birdies: Hole No 1 is a par 4 408 yard par 4 where if you want you can tee off on the roof of the drinks kiosk down into the valley below. (A Kodak moment perhaps!) However the signature hole has to be No14 on the Highland’s course…..tee box has to be 100Metres above the fairway. Watch out for: To offer golfers 36 holes, both Valley and Highland courses have two separate greens on each hole. When you arrive they give you a left hand or right hand score card so you know what to play on that round. Bogeys: The greens here offer an additional challenge as many have mounds, boulders or even a pond slap bang in the middle, so beware and ask your caddy for advice before taking your final approach shot.
