News Local Star Conquers Injury in Dubai
Thidapa Suwannapura managed to overcome an injury to her hip joint by grabbing second spot at the Dubai Omega Masters recently, earning herself a lot of praise from fans and the media for this plucky Pattaya based LPGA player. The Ladies European Tour event meant Thidapa ended her 2015 season with a very handy cheque for and finished ranked 18th on the LET tour.
She was in so much pain after her round that she did her press interviews with everyone sitting down on the grass! Due to her heroics on the course, Thidapa has also been offered an honorary membership to the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya. Her parents live in Pattaya, so Phoenix Gold is close to their home, allowing this talented LPGA star to practice at the 27 holes. Although Thidapa is on the road for most of the year and is based in Washington DC. she does still call Pattaya her home.

She has recently been seen on the fairways at Phoenix Golf Golf and Country Club, and with her honorary membership, she can now get ready for next season. Full yearly membership to Phoenix Gold is THB60,000.
New Course in Pattaya
Yes its true, while courses are closing all over the States and China, here in Thailand new courses are continuing to open. We have recently heard that Silverlake, the winery nearby Pattaya have started to level the area to build an 18 hole golf course.
Silverlake is also opening a massive Waterpark and will open three hotels on site over the next few years. This will mean that there will now be 27 golf clubs all within 70 minutes drive from Pattaya. We will keep you all posted.

News Pattaya Golfer at Amata Springs.
The Pattaya Golfer was one of the official sponsors at the 2015 Thailand Golf Championship held at the Amata Spring Golf and Country Club in Chonburi. Having watched the 156 professionals take on the challenging 18 holes over the four days we now salute them for handling the extremely hot weather, the wind and some of the deepest rough on the planet.
The club kindly hosted a Sponsors Tournament on the Monday after Jamie Donaldson lifted the trophy with a total over -21.....suffice to say your trusty Editor Mike Bridge and his guests Mark Siegel CEO from Golfasian, Stuart Mackie MD at Solar Golf Travel and Steve Ellison from Pattaya’s The Golf Club tried and failed to beat Donaldson’s score.

Great to experience the boat rip out to the 17th green. Must say it is true the rough there is brutal and at 4ins can swallow your ball easily!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Sir Nick Faldo
HIS ASIAN CONNECTIONS By Mike Bridge
Sir Nicholas Alexander Faldo MBE, was born in England in 1957 and was the top player of his era. He was ranked No. 1 on the Official World Golf Ranking for a total of 97 weeks. His 40 professional wins include 30 victories on the European Tour, plus six major championships: three Open Championships (1987, 1990, 1992) and three Masters (1989, 1990, 1996).
14

S
ir Nick has since become a successful course designer and a television pundit for CBS Sports and the Golf Channel.
Firstly after returning to Laguna Lang Co, the course he designed North of Danang, we asked him how was it shaping up?
We met up with this busy golfing legend while he was hosting the first round of the Laguna Golf Classic 2015 at Faldo’s Laguna Lang Co course in Vietnam The second round will take place at the Laguna Phuket next March.
Sir Nick: I walked the course yesterday. Basically it’s a tough golf course. We don’t perhaps need unplayable jungle so close to the holes, so we are going to keep pushing it back which is quite a job here.
The PR for the event had invited us to Vietnam, but on arrival told me nothing had actually been arranged so just toe the line, which was a bit disconcerting. In the end we found Sir Nick to be in great form and our quick allotted interview turned into 26 fascinating minutes, with him insisting we should walk down the 18th to the bunkers to get a good photo of him and the clubhouse. Here is the result of our exclusive interview with him.
16
What was the area like when you first saw this plot of land? Sir Nick: Well if you go on You Tube you can see we went through the jungle and they cut me a swath through around 8-10 foot wide and that was how we first looked at the course. A lot of it was all ditches and rivers and we would bend a tree over and literally make an Indiana Jones bridge. We had a great time, and it was fun. We then brought our crew here including my design team, shapers, director of
maintenance and construction. They have all worked in this area before so they had experienced and knew what it was like to put a golf course into that sort of terrain. In fact we came in on time and under budget so we got an extra star for that. What is it that attracts you to this part of the World? Sir Nick: I enjoy Asia. I came here moons ago at the end of the 70’s to play and I have come here to holiday quite a few times to Bangkok, Phuket, Malaysia even did the Orient Express. I enjoy the people, the food , ambiance as well. Did you ever win over here? Sir Nick: Yes I won the Johnnie Walker at Singapore Island and in fact I did play a few events over here as Jonnie Walker hosted a few tournaments here for a while and Dunhill also had a few too. Back in my day these Asian

tournaments would be held at the end of the season, it is different now how the cram them all in throughout the year. I love the way I get treated here and I love the weather, though not the 100 degrees at 9am in the morning. Generally Asia is just a great place to come and chill. Here in Asia we are awash with young and up and coming stars. What do you think of the future of Asian players on the World stage? Sir Nick: I have probably been asked that question for over 20 years. I said it would take time and it has. Asia was always attacking the rest of the world one man at a time. Now they are not and things have really improved and there are half a dozen or more very recognizable stars playing in America such as An Byeong Hun, Seung-Yu Noh and Hideki Matsuyama. These guys are winning in America and Kiradech Aphibarnrat is also doing
great and winning tournaments. So if they can get onto the European or the American tours which they are in force they will make their presence felt. China was deemed to be the growth area for golf, but has this changed? Sir Nick: Well as a course designer I have actually slowed down there now. We had a few projects there which go on like ‘here’s your land...., no, no here’s the land...no in fact here’s your land...Oh no it’s not there and now its somewhere completely different, and eventually it does not happen’. So I know what’s going on and its pretty serious, so currently I do not have any new projects in China. We do however have a couple more projects in Vietnam. What about courses in Thailand? Was The Emerald one of yours? Sir Nick: Yes well that was back in the days when you were the one hit wonders and you come in and you are
just a name on a design. I remember those days with Desmond Muirhead. Also Century Chonburi (Now called Pattavia Century) was another course. But now I have had my own company since 2000 so we are very much hands on and I have my own architects and my own little office in Windsor in England and pursue projects all over the world. We told Sir Nick about Nikanti’s 6 holes x 3 courses in Bangkok? Sir Nick: I agree with that idea. We have actually been talking to the R&A. I think especially around hotels you have got to break away from 18 holes being a Championship golf course. Why not have maybe 12 really fun holes or even 9 hole par threes. I sometimes give my design team a few challenges....can it be all turned into a par 3 golf course.... can it be played backwards. We have to break down the mentality of the hotel owners who say I’ve got to have an 18 hole championship course. But why not send your guests with families
17
out there for 2-3 hours instead of six hours. That’s what we really have to go hard on and I know the R& A are interested to help on that. Players are now hitting the ball further, do you find you are having to create longer holes? Sir Nick? Well if you want to hold an actual tournament then you have to have length, but we do at Laguna Lang Co actually have six tees and I like to design a course as good as I can, so I like it to be tough off the back, but as you keep going forward it is more and more playable. Similar with the greens you have four really challenging pins and the rest are quite playable. The in design which Jack Nicklaus did was to have many holes downhill. The pros can now hit it 350yards using the down slope. Well that has turned great golf courses into driving and a wedge or a nine iron. They are getting 500yards! Tiger’s dominance was fantastic, but now we’ve got three or four superstars plus a great chasing pack and the way they play is now a science. Most have a good golf swing, then there is the physical side. In my day they were saying don’t lift weights in case you lose your touch. No they have Doctors with masters degrees in biomechanics, then there is the dietary side and how they eat and sleep. Many say golf is an old man’s sport, but it isn’t at the pro level.
Faldo on the 18th at Laguna Lang Co Vietnam.
Sir Nick is now working most of the year behind the microphone as a successful TV pundit and commentator. We asked him how TV effected him during his playing days? Sir Nick: When I was playing we did not have the replays we have now, so I hardly watched myself at all. You couldn’t play your round of golf and come back and watch yourself play that evening. In this modern era you can watch the PGA tour at 9pm which for the players is probably quite useful. You can see your swing or your missed putt and you thought you hit it perfectly.
18
Faldo with Mike Bridge.
You make it look very simple on air but have you had some scary moments?
have technical issues but fortunately it’s not down to me but my excellent hosts. These guys are brilliant....they can even talk about their front door for 45 minutes!!!
Sir Nick: What you don’t see on the screen is not really what’s going on and three seconds before we are on, we can
2016 will be a great year for me, and I will have the best seat in the house. I have three majors, CBS Masters, the
Open with Golf Channel, the PGA Championship with CBS, my 20 odd tournaments throughout the year, then there is the Olympics and the Ryder Cup. So I am going to be talking wall to wall. That means I have got one possible week to play a golf tournament next year.

Course Report The old Course at siam country club There are not many courses that can truly say “We are a championship course. However The Old Course at Siam Country Club in Thailand can boast every year, that the top 50 women professionals on the Rolex ranking list play their 18 holes.
20
F
or the past few years the Old Course has hosted the Honda LPGA Thailand, part of the LPGA tours Spring Asian swing. The likes of Stacey Lewis, Michelle Wei, Jessica Korda and Lexi Thompson all love to stay and play in Pattaya, and Yani Tseng and World No 1 Inbee Park have both won here along with last year’s champion Amy Yang. Of course the huge crowds come to cheer on the young Thai players including Pornanong Phatlum, Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn and Pattaya’s own LPGA star Thidapa Suwannapura. For the 2016 event expect to see most of the nine Thai players who now have full tour cards
participate, some with a coveted Sponsors invitation. This Championship golf course has served Thailand as host to many golfing events such as the Thailand Open four times, Asian Golf Circuits and now every February the “Honda LPGA Thailand”. Apart from the two weeks during the build up to the big tournament, the rest of the year the Club is open to us mere hackers, and it is certainly on most golf vacationers wish list to follow in the footsteps of the big stars! When I was last there in December, the course was in great shape, with wonderful fairways and immaculate greens. A real golfers dream!
Everything works like clockwork here, as you are called onto the first tee and set off on your adventure. Hole 1 is a par 5, 543 yards from the Blue elevated tee, providing a breath taking view of this great starting hole. Second shot here is critical to get you in a good position to attack the undulating green. A great starting hole! Their stroke index one is a sneaky par 4, hole number 11. You tee off by a beautiful lake, to a well bunkered landing area, with little room for error. The small green is also guarded by two bunkers, so all shots here have to be spot on.
No.1 green.

Old CC no 10.
Other challenging holes are the 422 yard ninth up hill and the 18th with a very tricky green with cunning undulations and bunkers to capture your ball. This hole has seen more dramas than a Thai soap opera. The 18th in 2014 was where Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn litterally threw away a three shot lead to give a very stunned Inbee Park the win! Great TV adventure hole with a wicked undulating green, but a memorable way to finish your round.
Big Sister Moriya consoles Ariya Jutanugarn after she lost on the 18th hole in 2014.
Editors note:
Apart from the famous Old Course Siam Country also includes closeby the Plantation Course with 27 holes and their latest addition Waterside with 18 holes. The Old Course was constructed back in September 1969, originally designed by I. Izumi, and has been completely renovated with Mr. Lee Schmidt of Schmidt-Curley Design Inc. as a course architect.

The Old Course, a true championship course.
Some of the trees were removed allowing for an excellent breeze. A popular grass, Seashore Paspalum, was chosen for the fairways and Novotek for the greens, and there are over 101 bunkers, to challenge all standard of golfer. Only 20 minutes from central Pattaya and 75 minutes via motorway from Bangkok, the Old Course is well worth a visit. You will need to book in advance and in the summer they are often closed on Monday’s. Siam Country Club, Pattaya.tel; +66 (0)38 909700. www.siamcountryclub.com

prestigious tour, she has travelled alone across the World.
Not only was she rewarded with a cheque for but local golf course Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club gave her a coveted Honorary Membership too.
So how would you rate your third season on the LPGA Tour? I would be realistic and give myself a 5 out of 10. I had a lot of injuries so my body was in pain a lot of the time. At the beginning of the season I had lazic surgery on my eyes which did effect my game to start with. I didn’t touch a club for four weeks and so I really only had a few days practice before we went

to the Bahamas. And then later in the season in Canada I had a problem with my glut and so it was very painful to walk. Yes tell us about this injury? Well it started behind my knee and it was very hard to bend down and pick up the ball You ended up 92nd on the LPGA tour’s money list. Well luckily I still made the top 100 and retained my full card. However for some tournaments they only take the top 60 on the money rankings, so for 2016 it’s my goal to make it into that elite top 60. I hope to get one of the sponsors invites for the 2016 Honda LPGA Thailand, as it is great to play in front of family and friends. I also have a lot of European friends, and being from Pattaya my Dad

would love to see me in the field. We will have to wait and see! Being a 23 year old Asian on Tour, it must be quite daunting to travel about and play constantly? Yes it can be tough as I tend to travel alone, although this year I am hoping to travel with a trainer or physio. It probably costs me around US $23,000 a week when I am touring which is a lot. Apart from the prize money, I am lucky to have the support from Singha, the Korean golf ball manufacturer Volvik and J Lindeberg as my main sponsors. I am always looking for someone to manage my business activities, but it is hard to find someone who can find me sponsors in Asia and across the States where I tend to play a lot of my golf.
So the Euro 45,000 you won in Dubai came in very handy then? Yes that was great and I also jumped up 38 places on the Rolex World Rankings to 159, which is important. I also only played six tournaments on the European Ladies Tour but I am ranked 18th on their tour, which all helps when I talk to potential sponsors. What is the plan for 2016. Do you aim to play more in Europe? No I want to concentrate on the full LPGA tour starting with a trip to the Bahamas in January. I will then play in the co sanctioned ISPS Handa Womens Australian Open, which is an LPGA and LET event. If I don’t get a sponsors invite for Siam Country Club, then there is an LET tournament the same week in Australia which I could enter instead.
Who are your best friends on tour? I tend to stay around with many of the Korean and Spanish players. Of course on tour you get to talk and play with everyone, and I to get chat with all the Thai players as well. It should be interesting with the new Thais joining the full tour for 2016. Finally Your Goals for 2016? I just want to get 100% fit for the year, train more to get into shape, and instead of travelling alone have a trainer with me to push me onto higher levels.

The course as usual was in excellent condition, and it was good to see Matt Fitzpatrick the European Tour rookie up close and playing as if he had been round these difficult 18 holes many time before. B
ut maybe the best kept secret as to why thousands come back here year after year for their golf vacation is the wonderful service offered by the Thai Caddies. Quoted by Thai super Star Thongchai Jaidee as Thailand’s secret weapon, it is estimated that over 30,000, mainly female but a few male caddies, are employed around the country. So when you turn up at the course don’t be surprised if a beautiful smiling caddy picks up your bag with a smile and says .... WELCOME’. Caddies are almost compulsory to a round of golf in 90% of all Thai golf clubs. Apart from the green fee, the golf club will also charge you a caddy fee, anything between THB300-400, which normally your caddie will get at least 75%.
For this a well trained caddy will drive your golf cart or pull your golf trolley if you decide to walk. They will give you the distances from tee to green, help you select the correct club and can read the undulations on the green like a paperback novel. If it is hot, they will cool you down by holding your umbrella or even wave a fan. Basically it is a pleasure to let your caddy worry about everything while you enjoy a great round. At the end of your round it is customary to tip your hard working caddie, and we normally suggest you give them between THB350-500. Remember they rely on their tips, and so after 18 holes they deserve your generosity. Enjoy your round or four here in the Land of the Smiles!

irada Nirapathpongporn, a former L.P.G.A. Tour member and N.C.A.A. champion, suggested that each of the young professionals have backup plans for next year should they not earn L.P.G.A. status. But that caution fell on deaf ears, and by the conclusion of the 90-hole tournament played in Florida, eight Thai players had earned L.P.G.A. membership. “We worked four years for these five days,” said Benyapa Niphatsophon, 18, who played three extra holes in a threeway playoff for one of the last two fullseason L.P.G.A. cards.
at the Q-School. She is also a successful TV pundit. (see our Behind the Scenes article in this issue). “I am pleasantly surprised that the girls were so successful this year at Q-School,” Nirapathpongporn said in an email. “They just seem to be so single-minded in this mission, which worked out.” Joining Sukapan and Niphatsophon with full tour status are Nontaya Srisawang, 27, and Pannarat Thanapolboonyaras, 17.
“I have improved my game, so it’s time to do something bigger,” she said.
Four other Thai players — Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong, 18; Wichanee Meechai, 22; Prima Thammaraks, 23; and Pavarisa Yoktuan, 21 — also finished in the top 32 to earn conditional membership in 2016, allowing them to compete in some L.P.G.A. events. They will round out their tournament schedules on the Symetra Tour and tours around the world.
Buoyed by the performance of the male pro golfers Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat, ranked No. 29 and 37, Thailand has begun producing more golfers who could contend on the male and female professional tours.
“It’s exciting that there are going to be a lot of good Thai players on the L.P.G.A.,” Numa Gulyanamitta said. “Men’s golf is very popular in Thailand, but now that we have more women players, people will be cheering for both.”
Six Thai players held L.P.G.A. membership in 2015, with Ariya Jutanugarn coming 35th on the tour’s money list, Pornanong Phatlum (No. 38) , Moriya Jutanugarn (64) PK Kongkraphan (89) and Thidapa Suwannapura (92).

Thailand led all of Asia in numbers at this year’s final L.P.G.A. Q-School, tying Canada at 10, for the highest number of international contestants in the event. But coach Nirapathpongporn, the 2003 United States Women’s Amateur champion, was not sure what to expect at this year’s tournament. The Honda LPGA in Thailand
This year’s Honda LPGA Thailand takes place on February 25th - 28th 2016 at Siam Country Club’s Old Course. This is a very popular event and over the past few years the top 50 players on the full LPGA tour automatically get into the field of 72 players.

ydia Ko may still stay in New Zealand again for the second year running, however expect to see World No1 Inbee Park, 2015 Champion Amy Yang, Michelle Wei, Stacey Lewis plus many of the top stars there. The organisers have a difficult job this year in choosing who to give a coveted sponsors invitation to as there are nine young Thais who have a full LPGA 2016 card. Pornanong Phatlum, who dreams of a win on home soil and Ariya Jutanugarn automatically qualify being in the elite top 50 on the LPGA money list. Let’s hope we get a chance to see some of the other Thai players including Moriya Jutanugarn and local Pattaya star Thidapa Suwannapura. Pornanong Phatlum has remained Thailand’s no1 professional golfer for some time, and is currently playing for her forth year on the LPGA Tour. Khun Waen as she is known on tour, has been up there on several times even loosing in a playoff but that first win still eludes her. Could it be at the Siam Country Club’s Old Course when the Honda LPGA hits town the February. When we managed to catch a few minutes with this globetrotting super star, she still admitted her English was not great. Well it definitely has improved since we first met around 3 years ago. She was delighted to have become the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s new Golf Ambassador. ‘I now have the Amazing Thailand logo on the back of all my shirts, and in France last year I did some interviews with the media and expect to do some promotions again for them too, said Khun Waen. Along with her brother Pornpong, they have been the most colourful team on TV, as they are both sponsored by Loudmouth. Ironically her brothers nick name is WOW! Her 2015 season had its ups and downs and she admits she lost her confidence along the way. ‘I had an American caddie for most of the season last year as my brother stayed home to run his successful

management company. I have managed to get Wow to caddie again for me on some of the Asian tournaments and hope to have him on my bag at the Siam Country Club’s Old Course in February.’
Talking about the upcoming Honda LPGA she explained, ‘ The Old Course make it very difficult and their greens are very tough, firm and very fast. The course does favour the long hitters, but I feel I have a good chance in 2016.’
Pornanong sees a lot of the other Thais while on LPGA tour and told me that although Ariya Jutanugarn had started off 2015 so well, she also seemed to lose her confidence, especially her driving.
Not surprising, if she had a choice, she would put winning the Honda LPGA Thailand in front of her home crowd, ahead of winning one of the five LPGA majors.
‘My driving luckily has been constant, my short game is fine, and in the past my putting was great too. Now it is a bit off, so I have been working hard with my coach on putting.’
Not only is she a very popular player on tour but she is very proud to be a Thai and will make a great ambassador for the TAT in the future. Expect to see Pornanong in the winner’s circle soon.

ocated 45 kms North of Pattaya via the 331 road and around 90 minutes from Bangkok, this 400-acre resort property boasts a 27-hole championship golf course, a massive clubhouse, a large hotel, villas, several international restaurants, meeting and event facilities, a spa and even a 7,000 seater sports stadium. There are three nine hole courses with course B perhaps having the edge, but to be honest all three provide a few wow factors and offer you an interesting round.
40
Here they have a bit of everything to challenge golfers of all standards, with several large lakes, windy fairways, undulating greens, island par 3’s, trees in the fairways and two par six holes too. B1 is a fairly daunting start to your Pattana experience being a par 4 with a fairly tight fairway with two large lakes on either side. Windy especially on this exposed hole come into play and the raised green is tough to reach too. A hard hole to start so good idea to go to their driving range first.
B2 is a wonderful par 5 curling around a large lake with palm trees, a rolling fairway with grass humps up to a raise green. By now you are into the round and there are some tricky par 3 island holes ahead, and beware that they don’t have high rough to keep your ball from rolling into the water. Course A seemed to start off with a fairly easy couple of holes but there is a tricky par 3 onto an island where it is hard to stop your ball scooting off into the lake. Here they have two par 6’s although on the
second you can opt for the par 5 tee if you prefer. Although some of the fairways needed a bit of attention overall the course is in good condition and the facilities are hard to beat with a massive clubhouse with a superb restaurant serving international and Thai food overlooking the last green on the A course and the first tee of the B course. The caddies are well trained and were some of the prettiest we had seen too. Overall a good day out and worth allowing time for a meal before or after your round. Course C is perhaps a bit easier but still has some fun challenges, with a tricky uphill par 3 on the 2nd and the third offers a good birdie opportunity if you can position your second shot to give you a clear view to chip onto the green. Closing two holes also can lower your score too.

Bangkok City of Golf WHEN I CAME TO LIVE IN BANGKOK A FEW YEARS AGO, I WAS AMAZED AND VERY HAPPY TO LEARN THAT, UPWARDS OF 40 GOLF CLUBS ARE WITHIN 75 MINUTES FROM THE CITY CENTER. FEW CAPITAL CITIES OF THE WORLD CAN BOAST THAT!

O
bviously with the city’s notoriously unreliable traffic, sometimes it can take time to reach the best courses, however with improving expressway connections, you can actually find some excellent tracks on all sides of the city. Perhaps one of the most famous courses here is The Thai Country Club which was the host venue for the Jonnie Walker series in the 90’s with the likes of Ernie and Tiger in the field. A well oiled members club run by the Peninsula group, it is still possible to book a round through a golf tour operator, and worth dinning in their clubhouse afterwards. Most of Bangkok’s courses are located on flatlands, however there are some enterprising designers, such as Jon Morrow who have managed to create up to 30 metre variations at the Riverdale Golf Club. Jon by the way also designed Red Mountain in Phuket. Here they even give you a choice of two greens on a par 3....uphill or onto a tricky small

island. According to Golf Digest’s US course editor, he rates Riverdale as a top 100 course in the World! You can of course grab a round at Muang Keaw which is only 20 minutes from the centre and also not far from the airport. Here Schmidt and Curley were brought in for a redesign back in 2004 and have weaved their magic with raised greens, well placed bunkers, streams and clever dog legs. Panya Indra Golf Club with 36 holes is close too and here they offer flood light golf as well. With some great challenges and with the most prettiest caddies around, this is a very popular club so beware of slow play. A favorite of mine has to be Lam Luk Ka, a true country course with East and West tracks. The improved expressway network has reduced the original 75 minute journey, but we always thoroughly enjoyed playing here especially their beautiful West
Course. Both courses in fact are very well maintained and the mature trees, wildlife and great layout make this well worth the trip. Another floodlit course worth a visit is the Summit Windmill Golf Course designed by Sir Nick Faldo. This par 72 , 6,964 yard layout covers 160 acres with 40% of man-made lakes and landscaped gardens, with many grassy mounds, sand bunkers and undulating greens. Finally the one they are all talking about is Nikanti Golf Club west of the city. Designed by Pirapon Namatra, who also crated Banyan in Hua Hin, here he has designed Asia’s first 18 hole par 72 course with three six hole layouts. Each six holes have 2 par 3’s, two par 4’s and two par 5’s, so players can book 6, 12 or 18 holes. Definitely great if you do not have the time or perhaps the energy to spend playing a full round of 18 holes. With a lot to do at night after your round, Bangkok is very much a golfers paradise!

ietnam’s golf industry is also expanding very quickly too, and the country already boasts of over 33 excellent courses, with more in the pipe line.
V
For our trip we decided first to fly up to Danang in the centre of the country and then back to Ho Chi Minh City, with a side trip to Ho Tram, two hours South East of HCMC.
Vietnam was named Best Golf Destination for Asia and Australasia 2015 by IAGTO members and several courses here have won numerous awards as well.
Currently there are no direct flights from Thailand to Danang, however the good news is that Thai Air Asia have just announced that they will be flying direct from Bangkok early next year.
With just a 60 minute flight it will be quicker than flying to Phuket. Danang part of the region known as the Golf Coast Vietnam brings, together some of the finest golfing experiences in Asia. Danang is a fairly big city with most of the better hotels spread along the fabulous sandy beach running south of Danang towards the famous World Heritage site of Hoi An. Laguna Lang Co Golf Course.
47
Hyatt Regency, Pullman, Crown Plaza are all located on the beach while the trendy Novotel is located in the city overlooking the river. Around 20 minutes south of the city beside the sea, there are two first class golf courses next two each other. The Danang Golf Club’s Dunes course designed by Greg Norman and Montgomerie Links designed by Monty himself. Both these courses are seaside links style tracks. Monty opened here first and his course is suited to the many sand dunes found along this part of the coast. At 7,090 yards, this par 72 golf course is considered to be one of the best in Vietnam. It’s neighbour, the Danang Golf Club opened in 2010, and has also won many awards for its designer Greg Norman. The fairways here are generous and there are no out of bounds and only a small number of water hazards. An added bonus if you stay at their Ocean Villas Resort overlooking the sea, is they have a private tunnel under the road linking the villas to

Danang Golf Club, and you can order a golf cart to pick you up. You also get some preferential rates too. The new kid on the block here is the Laguna Lang Co golf course, designed by another golfing legend Sir Nick Faldo. A 75 minute trip north of the city, it is still worthwhile making the journey as these 18 holes are in superb condition in another wonderful part of the coast line. Along with the Banyan Tree and Angsana hotels on site, this course is a must on your Vietnam bucket list. Apart from golf, it is worth making the 20 minute trip to the fascinating historic village of Hoi An, where you can wander through the ancient streets with restaurants, spas and of course clothes and souvenirs shops and market stalls. We then flew back to Ho Chi Minh for some culture and relaxation. Very much a city awakening from the horrors of the Vietnam war, and for the curious there are several palaces and museums with sad memories of this difficult time for the region. As far as golf is concerned there are
a handful of courses around the city. The newest and most convenient to the city is Tan Son Nhat Golf Course (also under floodlights) beside the airport. Opened in 1995, The Vietnam Golf and Country Club with 36 championship holes is about 30kms from the city centre, and is a leader in terms of golf quality and service. There is also Long Thanh Golf Club another 36 holes 35kms from the city and Twin Doves Golf Club a 27 hole course an hours drive away. While we were there the World Golf Awards held in Portugal announced that their Best New Golf Course in the World had been won by The Bluffs at Ho Tram. Therefore we decided to make the two hour trip south of HCMC to experience another Greg Norman masterpiece beside the sea. This course has also just hosted the Asian Tours Vietnam Open with Sergio Garcia and Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke and Geoff Ogilvy participating, and is likely to become one of the top courses in the region. Greg has created some superb WOW
factors holes here utilizing the rugged coast line to the limit. The 18 holes were in immaculate condition and we could see why they deserved their award. Wind could be a bonus or a challenge but allows for cool breezes so you can play here all year round. As a bonus the Grand Hotel part of the same operation and next to the course, offers 5 star luxury on a breathtaking beach. Conclusion: Rates vary from approximately THB2,548 up to THB7,706 for weekends at peak periods. Bearing in mind these rates often include cart and caddie fees as well, then they are realistic.
Montgomerie Links.
There are also great stay and play packages and avoiding the busier weekends will help your budget. As most courses are relatively new, the facilities and upkeep of the greens and fairways mean you are offered a truly Championship experience. Overall other Asian countries will have to sit up and take note on how to compete. For service, quality of some very clever course layouts and fair pricing, Vietnam is well worth the trip for golfers and non playing partners alike. Laguna Lang Co, 14th Green.

W her e to S tay Vietnam is catching up very quickly and has become a very stylish holiday destination, with a huge selection of local and international brands to choose. Danang. Plenty of 4 and 5 star hotels to select here, from city centre hotels like the Novotel overlooking the river, to the Hyatt Regency, Pullman or Crowne Plaza hotels dotted along the beach. We stayed at the Ocean Villas which are co owned by the same company who built the Danang Golf Club. They have villas ranging from 1-5 bedroom villas from US$270 - 1,400 per night, some facing the wonderful beach with the rolling waves. There is a large pool, restaurant and spa and you have an almost desert stretch of beach to add to your visit. The club’s 16th par 3 hole is actually adjacent to some of the villas, and guests can arrange to be picked up by a golf cart and taken under through a tunnel directly to the clubhouse. Montgomerie Links is also close by too. Taxis are the way to get around and about 25 minutes south from the airport are the two Danang Courses. Hoi An the World Heritage village is a further 20 minutes along the same road. Ho Chi Minh City. We stayed at the city’s first 5 star boutique hotel called the Hotel des Art Saigon. This 160 roomed hotel only opened last October and is already becoming the trendy place for locals and travelers alike.

Part of the Accor group, the rooms are very chic and do check out their roof top bar and swimming pool, with great cocktails, funky music and wonderful sunsets over the city. The hotel is close to the city’s Notre Dame cathedral, the War Remnants Museum and the famous Water Puppet Show. Ho Tram. A two hour drive south west of Ho Chi Minh City and you reach golfers paradise, Ho Tram. Greg Norman’s The Bluff ’s 18 holes are incredible and opposite the course is the enormous Grand Ho Tram resort.
For our ground transport and Danang accommodation we used Indochina Travel Services (www.itsvietnam.com ) who can also assist with Visas where required. With UK passports we were able to get a free 15 day visit visa on arrival in Vietnam, but for other nationalities the rules may be different. Bangkok based golf tour operators Golfasian also specialise in golf vacations here and have an office in Vietnam. www. golfaian.com
This 560 roomed hotel is very similar to the famous Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, but without the gold glitz. Apart from numerous restaurants, a night club and a massive casino, the beautiful beach is the real star here, with several swimming pools too if you don’t want to jump the surf. We understand that in the future there are plans to build a second golf course at Ho Tram, and with new expressways being built the journey from Ho Chi Minh City will be cut to just 75 minutes. Useful Info... We travelled independently flying with Vietnam Airways from Bangkok via Ho Chi Minh to Danang, roughly two 1 hour flights.

The Pattaya Ryder Cup By Callum Mackie
52
In spring 2002, I was enjoying a cold beer with my good friend Ian from Cumbria, UK and Matt from Florida, USA. We had just returned from a fun round at Phoenix where we played a match play four ball – UK vs USA. From there the Pattaya version of the Ryder Cup was born and I was entrusted to develop the format.

53
T
he ground rules were set. It was to be a one day match Europe vs USA and the event had to be fun. A total of 16 players signed up for the very first Pattaya Ryder Cup at Khao Kheow in November 2002. I acquired a suitable trophy on a visit to the Niagara Falls, rules were distributed to all players and feature prizes announced. These features are the stuff of legends – shortest drive, furthest from the pin, the Jomtien beach award for most shots in a bunker and a special award to Matt who managed to hit a passing motorcyclist on the perimeter road. The two captains were my coinventors – Ian for Europe and Matt for USA. We had players from UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand and some Vikings from Norway who turned up as late entrants. Roll forward 14 years and the Ryder Cup has grown and evolved. The standard of golf has improved beyond
54
recognition with a number of single handicappers joining the event. The format has changed to be more similar to the other Ryder Cup. In 2013 it was expanded to a two day event – day one scramble and fourball, day two singles. There are now 4 points available for each pairing. It is no longer USA vs Europe. In recognition of the number of international players it is now Europe vs Rest of the World. The 2015 event kicked off with a registration evening at our sponsor’s venue – Sapphire Club on Walking Street Soi 15. The teams then teed off at Phoenix Gold on day one with sixteen players on each team. Team shirts were distributed to be worn on the final day and every player was raring to go. Team captains had chosen the matches the previous day, and Solar Golf organised the start, scoring and all logistics.
As the sun set over Phoenix Gold on day one Rest of the World had a commanding lead 12.5 points to 3.5. European Captain Duncan Mathieson, sponsored by Bacardi and Coke, was not in the mood for defeat. “We have a mountain to climb on Friday but there are still 32 points available. Remember Bannockburn!” The weather was fine for day two at Burapha Golf Club, with their championship C and D courses perfectly set up for a two tee start. Captains had adjusted the teams to set up really competitive matches. Each flight played four singles matches of nine holes each. A pig roast and beer were set up next to the last green so players could cheer their comrades down the 18th. With the final match complete it was back to Pattaya for the trophy and prize presentation at Sapphire Club. The normal quantities of alcoholic refreshments were consumed

with canapés supplied by Brunos Restaurant. Against a backdrop of nubile dancers, the Sapphire hostesses presented the feature prizes.....the final result –Rest of the World 30.5 points Europe 15.5 points. The Rest of the World Captain, Scott Javer from Brooklyn, New York, accepted the trophy on stage. “ The Ryder Cup is the highlight of the golfing year. It’s all about a group of friends getting together and having a great time on and off the golf course. We can all thank Solar Golf for bringing us together every year and running such an outstanding event. We all look forward to next year.” The 15th Ryder Cup will take place in Pattaya during the first week of November 2016. It is the centrepiece of a 3 week Solar Golf festival for visiting tourists and expat locals. Contact Solar Golf at admin@ solargolf.com for more information.

wners Kim and Pascal Schnyder have been creating fantastic dishes since they open Casa Pascal back in 2001.
From Switzerland Pascal started as an apprentice in the kitchens of the famous Palace Hotel in Lucerne and then to the Geneva Noga Hilton Hotel to become a Sommelier waiter. From there I moved to the bustling kitchen in Switzerland’s best hotel, the Dolder Grand in Zurich. The Ramada Renaissance is also on my resume, and I also gained more experience in private restaurants such as the Zeughauskeller Zurich.
62
Following his marriage to Kim, they then spent six years in Hong Kong where he was engaged by the Hotel Conrad International and other similar establishments, one year in Korea as a food consultant and then we left for Thailand, where I was the executive chef at Pattaya’s Dusit Resort before branching out on my own in 2001. So Casa Pascal was conceived and designed literally from the ground up. This really is a restaurant like no other, as everything you see was custom made. Pascal personally designed the interior décor, and had a hand in everything
from the crystal glasses, table ware, chairs, furniture and even the linen. The name Casa Pascal stands for “House of Pascal”. Please remember you are always welcome at his house. Their breakfasts are very popular especially with locals who enjoy the freshly baked croissants and waffles with maple syrup. ccording to Agoda.com there are in fact a staggering 1,526 hotels in the Pattaya region.
If you want to be in the thick of the action in Central Pattaya there are 258 to choose with major chains including Holiday Inn, Amari, Hilton, Dusit Thani, Marriott and Mercure all offering 4 and 5 star accommodation. There are also numerous 2-3 star options plus pubs offering great economic packages.
The stars of the LPGA Tour will once again stay at the traditional and quieter Dusit Thani to the west of the main beach, which has become the official accommodation for the LPGA tour when they visit the city every February. If shopping is your bag, then check out the award winning Hilton Hotel that sits above the Central Festival Shopping Centre right in the centre of Beach Road.
Apart from staying in Central Pattaya, there are also a number of other areas worth checking, including the Wongamat Beach area west of the city. Here you will discover one of the largest hotels in the city, the Centara Mirage Resort, which caters for families with a themed waterpark. The Pullman is also nearby with an excellent beachside restaurant.

She was the 2002 NCAA Division I Championship winner, the 2003 US Women’s Amateur winner, and the 2004 Nancy Lopez Award winner as the top amateur. Then In 2004 she turned professional and was a two-time LPGA Futures Tour Winner. She was also runnerup at the 2003 US Women’s Amateur Public Links. She then joined the LPGA Tour as the first Thai player, playing the tour from 2006-2008. Unfortunately she then suffered a series of injuries, including an eye injury and had to have shoulder surgery too, so she eventually retired after 15 years on the road in 2011. Now apart from her increasing duties as a Fox Sports golf pundit, Virada also co hosts True Visions Tee Off programme and does some TV commentary for ladies’ major golf tournaments with Fox Sports Asia, and Golf Channel Thailand . When not on your screen, Virada spends her time teaching young female golfers in her role as High

If all this did not fill her days, she is also in demand as a very competent and popular presenter at major golf events including the Honda LPGA Thailand and charity golf days and evening galas. It must have been tough spending so much time away from Thailand during her playing days, and although she may not have made the fortunes that today’s stars are making, she is definitely going to be around earning a great living for a long time here in Asia. With so many Thai men and especially women up there competing at the top each week, it is partly due to Miss Nirapathpongporn’s encouragement and enthusiasm that Thai golf is in such good shape. Great to see someone putting back so much in the sport that they love!

Suksan GM at Waterside.
Mike GM at Burapha. Footgolf. We keep reading about the decline in the number of rounds played on the courses around the World, which has been blamed on the lack of projects to encourage youngsters to take up the sport. Golf as we have known is portrayed as a rather stuffy game for the old folk who like to play mainly at weekends to get away from the family and work. Perhaps this is still true in parts or Europe and the States, but here in Thailand there are youngsters taking up the game in large numbers, and they are even encouraged to play at the weekends. The system here seems to support training, and maybe with local heroes like Thongchai Jaidee and the new kid on the block Kiradech Aphibarnrat playing exciting golf on the World stage, kids now are keen to follow in their footsteps.

At Burapha they persuaded the mighty Singha Corporation to sponsor the 1st Singha PAR 3 Thailand Championships at their 18 hole West Course. Here they created new tee boxes and had nearest to the pin prizes , a roulette game on four holes and a monster THB100,000 hole in one price too. A staggering 600 players took part over the three rounds and one of the winners was actual a 9 year old kid who enjoyed the fun with his parents.
Here in Pattaya some imaginative General Managers are also creating some exciting new golf experiences to lure golfers of all ages to come and have a go.
Footgolf has also taken off big time in the States with some clubs generating an additional 10% in revenue. Played using a football instead of a golf ball, they use the same fairways but with new greens with larger holes. We understand that the owners at Pattana Golf Resort are seriously considering adding Footgolf to their facilities. Watch this space!
At Siam Country Club’s Waterside they have created what they promote as Asia’s biggest putting green where over three rounds they hosted the 1st Siam Putting Masters. Entry was
Golf here in Pattaya is therefore leading the way in creating a more user friendly environment for new players to take up the sport. Let’s encourage them.
Retirement income options Most of us in semi or permanent retirement are reliant, to a lesser or greater extent, on our remaining nest egg and pension to provide us with an income that will keep the proverbial wolf from the door.

L
however, dipping ones’ toes in secure, well managed, successful Funds, is not like jumping in the deep end.
ooking back, in recent years, the results of leaving our hard earned cash to the vagaries of the World’s Stock Market would have sent a shudder through anyone’s spine.
Our feeling is that these particular Funds have provided a real alternative for those trying to make their assets work for them, without quaking every time the Financial News comes on.
Banks are paying next to nothing and, as I’ve already said the Markets scare the living daylights out of most investors, so where does that leave those of us that simply require a reasonable return on our Investments, without risking the shirt off our back? The Funds that have shone brightly throughout the legacy of the financial crisis are those which are now commonly referred to as “Non-Correlated”, which simply means they are not connected to the Stock Markets. In real terms, this generally means Investments that are in niche Sectors, where the demand curve is very strong, at least for the medium term. There are a number of examples of Fund Managers operating in such Sectors and they have shown themselves to be extremely resilient to economic ups and downs. Take the example that probably applies to large numbers of Expatriates around the World. They have perhaps sold a house in their home country and purchased one abroad and, in addition, have other assets that amount to several hundred thousand Pounds/Dollars. Let’s take a test case: Mr. X has a house and 300,000 GBP in cash from savings, forgetting pensions at the moment. Applying those Funds
In summary, individuals can look further afield than bank deposits to improve returns, for at least a part of their Portfolio, without taking one giant leap into the unknown with the Stock Markets. to a Bank deposit, he is likely, in the current climate, to receive perhaps 1.5% to 2% on a fixed term of 6 to12 months, which would result in an income of between 4,500 and 6,000 GBP form his lump sum. As an alternative, the non-correlated Funds, available through major International Institutions, have conservatively achieved around 5.5% to 6%, net of all management costs. That same man has now increased his interest income from perhaps 6,000 GBP per annum to between 16,500 GBP to 18,000 GBP annually. For anyone looking to protect their Capital from future inflation, whilst still maintaining a decent lifestyle, this is clearly significant. These non-correlated holdings look to operate on a low risk profile generally resulting in very stable and consistent results. There is no such thing in investment terms as no risk, including the Banks,

Bangpra Golf Club is the one of the oldest golf courses in Thailand.
Birdies: A longish course but with some birdie opportunities.
Constructed on a total area of 550 rai, it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007. Originally Bangpra Golf occupied only 9 golf holes, however they added another 9 holes, and further improvements were assigned by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Bogeys: The course has some of the most difficult greens to putt in Thailand Watch out for‌.Tourists in particular will enjoy playing alongside monkeys who frequent a couple of the holes here!
Crystal Bay Golf Resort This 27-hole Golf Resort course was designed by Japanese designed Thai Takenaka and opened for play in 1988.
Birdies: The rates charged make this a popular stop for locals and expats, and it does provide a fun round of golf close to the sea.
It is located near Sriracha some 45 minutes from Pattaya and 1.5 hours from Bangkok. Described as a Hawaiian style course with palm tree lined holes, Crystal Bay has good tee boxes, lush fairways and fair greens.
Watch out for: Several birdie able holes and some potential holes in one here. Bogeys: The rates charged make this a popular stop for locals and expats, and it does provide a fun round of golf close to the sea.

Birdies: Perhaps one of the most spectacular holes on course B is the 4th a 403 Golf yard parClub 4 off a raised tee Burapha down across a small lake onto a large landing area. Also the last 4 holes on D course are good fun with plenty of birdie opportunities. Watch Out For‌. Course D takes in the highest part of the course with spectacular views across the valley to its neighbor Laem Chabang Golf Club.
Bogeys: Locker room is a bit old fashion, but is clean and has adequate showers etc. Summing Up: Overall if you want a number of challenges at a fair price then Burapha ticks all the boxes. There is a well-equipped driving range and putting greens plus male and female locker rooms, a pro shop and club restaurant. www.buraphagolfthailand.com
A well maintained 36 hole golf club located only 30km north of Pattaya makes Burapha Golf Club in Chonburi Thailand a popular stop for locals and tourists all year round. Designed by course architect Gary Panks and tour professional David Graham, they have cleverly incorporated the hilly countryside to create four sets of challenging nine holes. The West course is 7,100 yards and the East is 7,300 yards The club has hosted several championships including the Singha Pattaya Open which uses course B and D.

The local Pattaya Sports Club have also added silver tees just behind the Red Tees for their older players, who did not want the idea of playing off the ladies tees, but need that extra few yards to give them a chance of a good score. This course is very well maintained and the greens play quite fast as well. The caddies are very knowledgeable and many also play golf.

The Emerald Located approximately 40 minutes’ drive east of Pattaya just past Bang Chang, this modest 18 hole course was supposedly designed way back by Sir Nick Faldo. A genuine country course with several single track holes, giving you the feel of playing in a peaceful ‘Hobbit’ style forest. The course which is actually carved through a pristine rain forest with mature trees, has it good and bad days but is always busy as their pricing is reasonable. Birdies: A very pleasant golfing experience, with not so many bunkers but lots of mature trees lining the fairways plus a

of the tees offered some ‘WOW’ factors. A good country outing! Bogeys : Staff in pro shop spoke a little English which can be tiresome, but they are friendly. The locker rooms and showers were clean, and although the restaurant was a bit basic, the menu was extensive. Watch Out For...we especially liked the third and eight holes on Course A where you are driving downhill with a second shot over a valley with a small stream up to a raised green surrounded by bunkers.

Birdie: A great starting hole with a sloping green down to a lake.

Watch Out For: The topiary is everywhere including elephants and even what looks like the FA Cup on the dogleg at hole number two. Also yardage markers are quaint bird huts on long poles. Bogeys : Can be a bit slow at the weekends, as it is a popular course. www.easternstargolfcourse.com Tel: +66 38 630 410
Eastern Star Country Club This links-style course located near the Gulf of Thailand, is one of only five courses in Thailand designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Set on 530 acres of land the course features wide fairways and hundreds of coconut palm trees. The gently undulating fairways and greens feature 65 bunkers, 11 lakes and more than 2,200 coconut palm trees. The name “Jack Nicklaus” is very well known for the golfers all over the world, and this is one of his best designers anywhere, which he likes to recommend... It is now has been 20 years old since the course opened, and it still preserves a very good layout. The course itself has been improved using Paspalum on the fairways which are same as tee boxes, and the greens with 9.0 speed Tiff Eagle. The golf course has 27 holes, separated into course A, B and C. Each course has its own outstanding characteristics and each is named by geography.

Course A (Mountain) according to the landscape of the course, the player has to cross over several hills with sloping fairways. Course B (Lake) has 9 holes with water hazards instead of the forest bunkers on the A Course. The outstanding hole here is hole 6 B, where players have to play down through the hill with the big lake between the fairways and green. The course C (Valley) 9 holes are different from course A and B, which are integrated into the mountain and lake. Since the fairways are slightly narrower, and there are a lot of water hazards this course C offers the most difficult challenge.

St Andrews 2000 This is an extremely long course playing at 7,700yards to par 74, as it features two massive par 6’s. It is part of a 72 holes resort sharing its clubhouse with Rayong Green Valley and Silky Oaks. English born golf course architect Desmond Muirhead has created one of Pattaya’s most spectacular golf courses, as St Andrews 2000 was built to replicate a Scottish links course. Located in Rayong, it is about 40 minutes from Pattaya.

Birdies: There is a certain thrill when you look down from a high tee box to a valley below with humps and hollows, knowing that you have to drive with a degree of accuracy. Risk and reward is the name of the game here! Bogeys: The facilities although perhaps a little old fashion, are quite adequate. Watch out for: There are two par 6’s, both over 800 yards, claimed to be the World’s longest par 6! Good luck if you par them!
Birdies: Hole No 1 is a par 4 408 yard par 4 where if you want you can tee off on the roof of the drinks kiosk down into the valley below. (A Kodak moment perhaps!) However the signature hole has to be No14 on the Highland’s course…..tee box has to be 100Metres above the fairway. Watch out for: To offer golfers 36 holes, both Valley and Highland courses have two separate greens on each hole. When you arrive they give you a left hand or right hand score card so you know what to play on that round. Bogeys: The greens here offer an additional challenge as many have mounds, boulders or even a pond slap bang in the middle, so beware and ask your caddy for advice before taking your final approach shot.
