Naklua fails test as ecotourism destination Jetsada Homklin Naklua has a lot of work to do before it can be considered a prime ecotourism destination, according to the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration. The historic fishing village and marketplace scored just 36 percent on a Ministry of Tourism and Sports survey of 168 communities in eight tourism development areas. Deputy Transport Minister Pailin Chuchottaworn – who formerly headed Thai oil giant PTT PLC – opened the May 23-25 exercise at the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency. The conference began with case studies on past oil spills and the lessons learned from them. A panel discussion followed on the integration of public and private organizations in preventing and responding to spills. Practical drills followed later offshore. The confab also was open to international observers, with representatives from Cambodia, Singapore and Vietnam attending. On the environmental front, its natural resources have been destroyed by pollution and overuse, with garbage piling up on roadsides, sewage pouring into the sea and overfishing emptying out local waters. While Pattaya has tried to reduce the problems, there has been little progress. In fact, Naklua’s lack of controls on tourism and population have made some problems worse, the survey said. Pinit said city hall is dedicated to making Naklua a Level A ecotourism destination, but success will take the cooperation of residents and businesses working with the government.

Dump’s neighbors glad to see city hall act Jetsada Homklin Residents near Pattaya’s Sukhumvit Soi 3 garbagetransfer yard said they were relieved to see the city removing excess rubbish, but said much more needs to be done. Ruamkha Advance Tech International, hired by Pattaya for the emergency work, began hauling hundreds of tons of rotting waste to a landfill in Rayong May 15. Sukumvit Soi 3 dumpsite is being cleared out after verbal wars between the locals and the council 2 weeks ago. About 100 tons remained after that day, but the site gets 400-plus tons a day, so Ruamkha’s work hardly is a permanent solution. Nonetheless, residents of the Kratinglai and Ban Rongkeed communities adjoining the dump said it was good to see some action from city hall after months of inaction. At a May 9 meeting, they had laid out eight demands, including compensation of 5 million baht to those
affected by the pollution and smell. The other demands included removal of excess waste, cleanup and treatment of polluted water flowing from the transfer station, continuous traffic management, quick response to residents’ complaints, and a establishment of a citizen’s committee to monitor use of the dump. City hall already has rejected demands for compensation and a citizens’ panel, but said it was working on the others.

Encroaching Naklua locals appeal to Prime Minister’s advisor Jetsada Homklin Naklua residents accused of encroaching on two vital flood-control canals appealed to former Pattaya politicians for help in their battle against eviction. Residents along both the Naklua and Nok Yang canals met with former cabinet minister Sonthaya Kunplome – now a political advisor to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha – and other out-of-office Pattaya politicians during their visit to the region May 23. Sonthaya said the visit was made to give locals a chance to voice their concerns and to provide them information on the legal process and how they can respond to the eviction orders. More than 100 families are subject to eviction or demolition of their homes and businesses following a military-led crackdown on those who have exploited public land for decades and, simultaneously, impeded water flow to canals and exacerbated flooding problems. Many of the property owners have appealed the decision as the law gives those who bought property between 1942 and 1992 and have resided in the area for 20-30 years

Even if they are living on public land, their long-term tenancy can give them the legal right to remain. However, decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Those who bought or built on canal land after 1992 have
no right to appeal. Pattaya officials are now waiting on satellite imagery from past years to compare to current aerial photos to determine if property owners have exceeded their original property lines.
Backed by the army, Pong and Banglamung officials say they now have the power to stop the pollution, one way or another. Air samples recently were taken and if the chemical concentration exceeds safe levels, the paint-spraying business will be shut down and company officials arrested. But even if the air quality is found to be within legally safe limits, the sub-district plans to use the Public Health Act to charge the firm with causing a public nuisance, forcing it to reduce the fumes or stop paint spraying. Test results are due in early June. Seeing their fate being decided, Supawuth executives suddenly became more cooperative and have begun dispatching employees to monitor air quality in the neighboring village for three hours a day.

traffic that can result from success and traffic spikes that write-ups on popular websites can bring to a new business, especially an innovative startup. Therefore, this could mean an increased demand for IT professionals in Thailand and could help boost the viability of the local tech sector.
True Digital Park set to launch in Q4 2018 Now, the situation seems to be changing: the government is looking to promote research in the area, while the private sector shows excitement at the industry’s potential, with many angel investors paying close attention to Thailand. As part of efforts to transform the country into a true innovation hub, Thai company True Corporation is planning to launch True Digital Park within Q4 2018.
The vast co-working space will range over 77,000 square meters (the equivalent of 10 soccer fields) and include over 1,000 workstations, with more than 4,000 square meters dedicated to specialized tech labs and experience centers. It will also feature 4 dedicated spaces for events, with a maximum capacity of 500 participants, over 200 shops including restaurants and a 24-hour library, and the country’s first Government Digital One-Stop-Service to cut back on red tape. 30% of the park will be devoted to green spaces – the largest such investment by a private developer so far. The park aims to provide not only an efficient co-working space that will forge ties between up-and-coming startups and experts, incubators and accelerators, but also to build a vibrant startup community from the ground up, in an effort to contribute to a startup scene that will last and realize its full potential. According to Techinasia, there is already much enthusiasm among representatives and founders of startups that will work inside the new park, including spacetech startup Mu Space, online payment provider Omise and online medical consultancy service firm Chiiwii, to name but a few. You are an enthusiastic photographer, having sent many rolls through the processors in the days of film. Where did you put the prints you have taken over the years? Somewhere your friends can look at them and ask the questions where, how, when? Unfortunately, like many other photographers, the prints sit in a drawer in the lounge room. Then you moved over into the digital era and now have hundreds of thumb nails you can flip through, while looking for the photo you took of your parents 10 years ago. Or even the photo you are particularly proud of in B&W. Worse still, you try to show someone your photographic masterpieces on your mobile phone with its 7 x 13 mm viewing area.

There is an answer to all this. It is called Wall Art. Wall art is something you should aim towards. Be proud of your images. Be bold. You can keep the images on the wall for as long as you want. And change for others when you want something new. So what type of image is good for wall art? First prerequisite is size. A tiddly little 3 x 5 may be fine for looking at in your hand, but you could scarcely hang it on the wall. The smallest you can accept is a 10 x 8, for wall art as size does matter. Now comes the next problem – if you blow up an average standard print you begin to lose sharpness. Go to 20 x 24 and you will have lost sharpness. This does mean that you have to reject any “soft” images for enlargement and only go for ones that are pin-sharp. Be ruthless with yourself. And don’t listen to anyone else. These are your images for your enjoyment. Subject matter with wall art pictures is up to you, as all the Thai girls say, but pick one that you enjoy and more importantly, one where the subject fills the frame.
Dear Hillary, I got shown a letter where a guy had written to one of the local bar girls that he was coming back at Christmas and how he was looking forward to seeing her again. I said to her that he sounded like a nice guy, but she didn’t remember him! “Where he come from?” was the reply. When I said Germany, then she remembered that it was either George or Hans! How can these girls keep living like this? Have they no sense of responsibility? Amazed Dear Amazed, You should not be amazed, I am amazed that there are still people like you around, who think that there are “rules of association” with girls in bars. Petal, these girls are working there. Their “job” is to look after unattached males in return for financial rewards. Her George or Hans was just another passing face in the crowd, but don’t worry, five minutes after he arrives she will have recognized his wallet and will make his holiday memorable again. Dear Hillary, I am sure you’ve heard it all before, but I think I am being ripped off. My girlfriend (Thai) has recently started to ask me for more money than she normally gets for housekeeping and the monthly wage I give her. It was just a few hundred baht here and there to start with, but now she needs thousands at a time. When I ask her why she needs the extra she gets sulky and when I really push her for an answer the best I get is “for family – you farang no understand.” Hillary, is there something here that I should

Now to the frame for wall art: The frame is merely to stop the image being damaged. The framing shops will want you to get a large ornate, gilded one, because they are more expensive and a wide matte ditto. Reject all those, as the subject for wall art must be the dominant part
of the image. The subject has to be the Hero. A smooth border and a narrow matte is all that is needed. Don’t let the frame maker hijack your art. However, at the weekend I saw another way to get some great wall art – on a canvas backing on an artist’s frame. The print is stretched
understand, or what? I am getting very tired of the continual cash hand-outs. Andy Dear ATM Andy, It sounds like there is lots you don’t understand. “Family” is important to a Thai and is one of the strongest bonds for the individual. Family keeps them together, family gets them over problems of all types, financial and otherwise. It is very similar to the Chinese borrowing system – but there is always pay-back time. Your girlfriend may be returning money borrowed from before – in that time in her life B.A. - before Andy. She may also be helping her brother/mother/father/cousin (delete that which is not applicable) out of a jam. And on the other hand, she may be gambling with it, another very common Thai pastime. You really have to start communicating better with your girlfriend, Petal, if you want to know where the money goes. If she is the money manager for the household, sit down each week and discuss the family budget. If you do this in a non-threatening way, then you will find out where the money goes. If it ends up in sulkiness or accusations, then it is time to review the entire relationship and handle the housekeeping yourself. I also worry about relationships where the “girlfriend/wife” is paid a “wage” each month. For what, Andy? For staying with you, putting up with you, or what. We call that having a “mia chow” (rented wife), and a master and servant relationship will always fail, in my experience. Thai women may look meek and mild, but they’re not. They most certainly are not, and when pushed will bite back. That is something else you have to understand, Andy.
over a wooden frame (like an artist’s painting) and it makes for a very dramatic way of display. Not cheap, the one in the shop was a 20 x 24 and they wanted B. 1,500 for it. The framing is actually done in Bangkok and takes 8 days. The best way is to download
your selected image on to a memory stick and present that to the shop. I always make a copy from the original and present that to the framers, so that you haven’t lost your best image if something goes awry. Oh yes, the name of the shop in the Central Festival was called Eastbourne.
Dear Hillary, I’m another of those stupid farangs. There was one girl that I was a regular with in one of the bars in Nana Plaza. I liked her a lot and I thought she liked me too, but I didn’t want her to stay with me. Overnight was fine and I thought we had built up a good relationship. She knew what I wanted, so it went on for a few months. Then about a year ago she asked me for some money as she had some problems with her grandmother, so I gave her 40,000 baht. She promised to repay me within six months. Well it’s now a year and she certainly hasn’t repaid anything, she’s shifted to another bar somewhere and in Bangkok I could spend the next year going from one to another and still not cover them all. I realize that I’ve been stupid, but I just wanted to let everyone else know to not be stupid either. Please do not use my real name, as I am happily married. Stupid Dear Stupid, I have just called you what you called yourself, so forgive me if it looks insulting. However, you have got yourself into this pickle by being very selfish, Petal. You happily admit “she knew what I wanted”, but you did not find out what she might have wanted, did you? You were happy enough to carry on with a relationship that could have no future, as you are already “happily married”, so what did you expect was going to happen? You wanted casual sex, and you got it. What you did not ascertain was that she wanted money – and she got it! Kiss the 40,000 baht goodbye and be thankful you didn’t have to kiss your marriage goodbye as well.

Have you had the spring cough? Have you had the spring cough yet? If not, think yourself lucky, just about everyone else has had it. And it isn’t one of those coughs which goes away in a couple of days, patients are saying it takes at least a couple of weeks. Or even longer. There are many reasons for epidemics such as these, and most occur with the change of seasons, hot to cold, cold to wet and so forth, but with the vast majority, the common carrier of the bug is the human race. This time we can’t blame an innocent mosquito! Yes, we are the ones who go to work and spread our germs to the office, exploding an aerosol of potentially debilitating diseases into the air, every time we cough. This is the commonest way of transferring the bugs, by what we call droplet infection. Every droplet capable of carrying thousands of microbes, each one looking for another human to infect. You. Or even me. In our household, my young son brought it home from school, passing it on to his elder sister and now to me. Thank you so much, Evan. The latest bout has been a form of URTI, which is our acronym for Upper Respiratory Tract Infection. This is inflammation of the bronchus, that part of your breathing tube to the lungs before it splits to become the right and left bronchus. The medical name is therefore “Bronchitis”.
The clue is in the ending – “itis” which generally means inflammation and / or infection. Thus you can get Appendicitis (inflammation of the Appendix) and Pharyngitis (inflammation of the pharynx), Laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx) etc., etc., you get the picture. Infection and irritation of the breathing tubes is, as we said in the beginning, very common. The most usual predisposing cause is, however, our old friend cigarette smoking! If you don’t believe that cigarette smoke is irritating, try letting cigarette smoke waft into your eyes and see how they will sting and water. Your sinuses and bronchi do just the same! Once the irritation begins, the mucous lining becomes swollen, and it becomes easier for the germs to take a hold. With Bronchitis, it generally begins as a slight irritation deep in the back of your throat. There can be some soreness as well, even on swallowing. Unchecked this develops into a ‘productive’ cough, with loads of thick, tenacious gunk being coughed up, which we refer to as ‘sputum’. One of the signs and symptoms your doctor will want to know is “What color is your sputum?” This gives us a chance to see if your cough is from an irritation or infection. If you are bringing up large lumps of yellow or green glue then you have an infection, but if the mucous is clear then
you probably do not harbor a nasty bacterium in your throat, but an equally nasty virus. If, however, the sputum is red and bloodstained then you may have burst a little blood vessel in the throat – or of course, this could be an early sign of lung cancer but don’t panic yet! If the sputum you are coughing up is thick, green and gooey, this is fairly suspicious of a bacterial infection, and sometimes we will attempt to “grow” the bug to identify it. No, this is not for germ warfare, it is just so that we can feed the bug some different antibiotics to see which ones exterminate the bug best. This is a much more accurate way of choosing the correct antibiotic, than selecting ones by the pretty color they are on the pharmacist’s shelves. And I don’t go along with trotting down to local pharmacy and getting “some antibiotics”. That’s how we end up with antibiotic resistance. If you have gone over a week and your cough is showing no sign of letting up then it really is time to line up with all the other coughers at the outpatients department. Just make sure you can describe the color of your sputum! Remember that if you are a smoker, the chances of the cough lasting longer are much higher, as well as your being more likely to catch the cough from someone else.
UN health agency aims to wipe out trans fats worldwide Mike Stobbe New York (AP) - The World Health Organization has released a plan to help countries wipe out artery-clogging trans fats from the global food supply in the next five years. The United Nations agency has in the past pushed to exterminate infectious diseases, but now it’s aiming to erase a hazard linked to chronic illness. In a statement Monday, the U.N. health agency said eliminating trans fats is critical to preventing deaths worldwide. WHO estimates that eating trans fats - commonly found in baked and processed foods - leads to the deaths of more than 500,000 people from heart disease every year. “It’s a crisis level, and it’s major front in our fight now,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a news conference in Geneva on Monday. Officials think it can be done in five years because the work is well underway in many countries. Denmark did it 15 years ago, and since then the United States and more than 40 other higher-income countries have been working
on getting the additives out of their food supplies. The WHO is now pushing middle- and lower-income countries to pick up the fight, said Dr. Francesco Branca, director of the WHO’s Department of Nutrition for Health and Development. Artificial trans fats are unhealthy substances that are created when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to make it solid, like in the creation of margarine or shortening. Health experts say they can be replaced with canola oil or other products. There are also naturally occurring trans fats in some meats and dairy products. The WHO recommends that no more than 1 percent of a person’s calories come from trans fats. “Trans fats are a harmful compound that can be removed easily without major cost and without any impact on the quality of the foods,” Branca said. Countries will likely have to use regulation or legislation to get food makers to make the switch, experts said. At the WHO news conference Monday, a representative

The head of the World Health Organization called on all nations to eliminate artificial trans fats from foods in the next five years. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings) from a leading food industry trade group said companies are working to reduce trans fats in their products. “We call on food producers in our sector to take prompt action and we stand ready to support effective measures to work toward the elimination of industrially produced trans fats and ensure a level playing field in this area,” said Rocco Rinaldi, secretarygeneral of the International Food and Beverage Alliance. Dr. Tom Frieden, a former director of the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention who worked with WHO officials on the call to action, called its move unprecedented. “The world is now setting its sights on today’s leading killers - particularly heart disease, which kills more people than any other cause in almost every country,” said Frieden, president of Resolve to Save Lives, a New-Yorkbased project of an organization called Vital Strategies. In the U.S., the first trans fatty food to hit the market
Health officials: Stay out of the pool if you have diarrhea Mike Stobbe New York (AP) - Health officials say hotel pools and hot tubs are a major source of the stomach bugs people get from swimming. And they’re reminding people with diarrhea to stay out of pools, hot tubs and water playgrounds. U.S. public health officials report on safe swimming every year. Thursday’s version from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention focused on outbreaks in 2000 through 2014 that were tied to swimming or bathing in treated recreational water spots.
In an average year, there were 15 such outbreaks and about 1,800 related illnesses. Overall, a third were tied to hotels. A parasite called cryptosporidium (kript-toe-spor-ID’-ee-um) caused most of the outbreaks. It can survive

was Crisco shortening, which went on sale in 1911. Trans fatty foods became increasingly popular beginning in the 1950s, partly because experts at the time thought they were healthier than cooking with butter or lard. Food makers liked artificial trans fats because they prolonged product shelf life. They used them in doughnuts, cookies and deep-fried foods. But studies gradually revealed that trans fats wreck cholesterol levels in the blood and drive up the risk of heart disease. Health advocates say trans fats are the most harmful fat in the food supply. In the U.S., New York City in 2006 banned restaurants from serving food with trans fats. The same year the FDA required manufacturers to list trans fat content information on food labels.
Many manufacturers cut back, and studies showed trans fat levels in the blood of middle-aged U.S. adults fell by nearly 60 percent by the end of the decade. In 2015, the FDA took steps to finish the job of eliminating trans fats, calling for manufacturers to stop selling trans fatty foods by June 18, 2018 - a deadline that arrives next month. FDA officials have not said how much progress has been made or how they will enforce their rule against food makers that don’t comply. “The removal of trans fats from the food supply as an additive counts as one of the major public health victories of the last decade,” said Laura MacCleery, policy director for the Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group, Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Estonian municipality put cannabis leaf on flag Copenhagen, Denmark (AP) - The southern Estonian municipality of Kanepi has a cannabis leaf on its new flag - because that’s what its name means in Estonian. Andrus Seeme, mayor for Kanepi’s 2,500 souls, says a referendum was held in late 2017 and 80 percent picked the winning design - a silver cannabis leaf on a green shield - out of seven designs. Seeme said Wednesday the city council adopted it a day earlier. Kanepi chose a new flag after three municipalities merged into one following last year’s administrative reform. Seeme said the leaf has been used as a heraldic symbol by local groups for decades and the new flag has met little opposition in Estonia, where cannabis is illegal.
6 young squirrels rescued from ordeal of tangled tails Omaha, Neb. (AP) - Six young squirrels whose tails were stuck together by tree sap are recovering after a Nebraska wildlife expert untangled them. A Nebraska Humane Society worker rescued the squirrels from a pine tree in Omaha last week. Nebraska Wildlife Rehab executive director Laura Stastny told the Omaha World-Herald that the sap-covered tails became knotted as the youngsters wrestled in their nest. Stastny says they are about 8 weeks old. Resident Craig Luttman spotted the rodents’ predicament, describing it Thursday as “kind of like a tug of war, going in completely opposite directions.” Stastny gave the squirrels a mild painkiller before removing the sticky fur and untangling them. She says some of them suffered injuries to their tails, but she expects all six to be released in a few weeks.

Foam rubber gold bars fool man who burglarized Michigan shop Grand Rapids, Mich. (AP) - Fake promotional gold bars apparently appeared so much like the real thing that someone broke into a western Michigan flooring shop to take them. WXMI-TV reports Old to Gold Hardwood Floors owner Rowdy Lapham arrived at work Monday to find his store in Grand Rapids burglarized. Foam rubber gold bars featuring the company’s logo were strewn about. A rock was used to break through a window around 2 a.m. Sunday. The burglar was seen on surveillance video roaming through the shop. Employee Nick Butler tells WZZM-TV that the thief may have walked past a window and saw the stack of bars and “thought, wow, someone forgot to put these gold bars away.” The squeezable bars are for stress relief. Butler says the company’s motto is stress-free flooring.

Ammo box falls from military chopper, crashes into school El Paso, Texas (AP) - Authorities are trying to determine how a box of ammunition fell from a military helicopter and crashed through the roof of an elementary school in Texas. The Ysleta Independent School District says no one was injured when the ammo box hit Parkland Elementary School in El Paso on Thursday afternoon. The ammo box left a hole in the roof and caused a power outage in part of the building. Officials at nearby Fort Bliss say they’ll reassess flight patterns as part of their investigation. In a statement, 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade commander Col. Jay Hopkins said he was sorry for the damage and grateful no one was hurt.
Message in a bottle washes ashore in Canada 18 years later Gloucester, Mass. Eighty-year-old Rita Ganim tells the Gloucester Times she dropped the bottle into Ipswich Bay in August 2000 with a short message asking the person who found it to contact her. The bottle was all but forgotten until Ganim received a call from the Buffalo News saying someone found it. Dallas Goreham had been looking for sea glass in the Canadian province last Wednesday when he came across the bottle. The 11-year-old’s mother tracked Ganim down through the newspaper and sent a photo of her son holding the message. While there are no plans set, Ganim says she would love to meet the finders of her bottle.

Experts: China far side lunar mission potentially historic Christopher Bodeen Beijing (AP) - China’s ambition to soft-land a spacecraft on the far side of the moon later this year faces considerable challenges, but if successful would propel the country’s space program to the forefront of one of the most important areas of lunar exploration, experts say. China hopes to be the first country to complete such a landing. On Monday, it launched a relay satellite to facilitate communication between controllers on Earth and the upcoming Chang’e 4 mission. The moon’s far side is also known as the dark side because it faces away from Earth and remains comparatively unknown. Creating the ability to explore the far side of the Moon is an impressive achievement, John M. Logsdon of George Washington University’s Space Policy Institute said in an email. “Spacefaring countries around the globe are focusing a great deal of attention on lunar exploration, and this far side capability, if it comes
into being, will put China in a leading position with respect to that objective,” Logsdon said. However, getting the relay satellite into the proper position will be tricky and marks only a first step in pulling off the landing, he said. “Doing things in space, especially at a far distance from Earth, remains hard, so success is far from assured, Logsdon said. A far side soft-landing would be a “world historical first,” said Bernard Foing, head of the European Space Agency’s International Lunar Exploration Working Group, which has collaborated with the Chinese program. That would offer a “deep science opportunity to study the far side,” which has a different composition from sites on the near side, where previous missions have landed, Foing said. However, he too warned of the difficulties ahead, saying it would be a “great challenge using the relay orbiter for control and data.” Such a communications relay link is needed for communication with a spacecraft on the far side because the
China has launched a relay satellite as part of a groundbreaking program to land a probe on the far side of the moon this year. The China National Space Administration said on its website that the satellite lofted into space early Monday, May 21, aboard a Long March-4C rocket will facilitate communication between controllers on Earth and the Chang’e 4 mission. (Cai Yang/Xinhua via AP) moon’s rocky bulk would otherwise block contact with Earth. China previously landed its Jade Rabbit rover on the moon and plans to land its Chang’e 5 probe there next year and have it return to Earth with samples - the first time that would be done since 1976.
China conducted its first crewed space mission in 2003, making it only the third country after Russia and the U.S. to do so, and has put a pair of space stations into orbit. Upcoming missions include the launch of the 20-ton core module for the still orbiting
Tiangong 2 station, along with specialized components for a more-than 60-ton station that is due to come online in 2022 and a Mars rover planned for the mid 2020s. Additionally, China has already obtained the “technological basis” to put astronauts on the moon, the
chief designer of the manned space program, Zhou Jianping, told a conference last month. “We have had in-depth discussions with many experts about manned lunar exploration, and conducted research on key technologies in recent years,” Zhou said. Although China’s space program is largely military-run, the Chang’e 4 mission underscores how it is a developing “an ambitious civilian, science-based space effort alongside building up the country’s national security space capabilities,” Logsdon said. A number of Chinese commercial satellite launchers have also sprung up in recent years on the model, if not the scale, of private U.S. companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin. Last week, Beijing-based OneSpace Technologies became the first private spaceflight company to send a rocket into space, launching its relatively small 9-meter (30-foot) OS-X for a test flight that ended with it falling back to Earth.
Amazon urged not to sell facial recognition tool to police Gene Johnson Seattle (AP) - Amazon’s decision to market a powerful face recognition tool to police is alarming privacy advocates, who say the tech giant’s reach could vastly accelerate a dystopian future in which camera-equipped officers can identify and track people in real time, whether they’re involved in crimes or not. It’s not clear how many law enforcement agencies have purchased the tool, called Rekognition, since its launch in late 2016 or since its update last fall, when Amazon added capabilities that allow it to identify people in videos and follow their movements almost instantly. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon has used it to quickly compare unidentified suspects in surveillance images to a database of more than 300,000 booking photos from the county jail - a common use of such technology around the country - while the Orlando Police Department in Florida is testing whether it can be used to single out personsof-interest in public spaces and alert officers to their presence. The American Civil Liberties Union and other privacy advocates on Tuesday asked Amazon to stop marketing Rekognition to government agencies, saying they could use the technology to “easily build a system to auto-
mate the identification and tracking of anyone.” That could have potentially dire consequences for minorities who are already arrested at disproportionate rates, immigrants who may be in the country illegally or political protesters, they said. “People should be free to walk down the street without being watched by the government,” the groups wrote in a letter to Amazon on Tuesday. “Facial recognition in American communities threatens this freedom.” In an emailed statement, Amazon Web Services stressed that it requires all of its customers to comply with the law and to be responsible in the use of its products. The statement said some agencies have used the program to find abducted people, and amusement parks have used it to find lost children. British broadcaster Sky News used Rekognition to help viewers identify celebrities at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last month. Amazon’s technology isn’t
that different from what face recognition companies are already selling to law enforcement agencies. But its vast reach and its interest in recruiting more police departments - at extremely low cost - are troubling, said Clare Garvie, an associate at the Center on Privacy and Technology at Georgetown University Law Center. “This raises very real questions about the ability to remain anonymous in public spaces,” Garvie said. While police might be able to videotape public demonstrations, face recognition is not merely an extension of photography but a biometric measurement - more akin to police walking through a demonstration and demanding identification from everyone there, she said. Some police departments, including Seattle, have policies that bar the use of real-time facial recognition in body camera videos. Amazon released Rekognition in late 2016, and the sheriff’s office in Washington County, west of Portland, became one

The ACLU and other organizations on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, asked Amazon to stop selling its facial-recognition tool, called Rekognition, to law enforcement agencies. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson, File) of its first law enforcement agency customers. A year later, deputies were using it about 20 times a day - for example, to identify burglary suspects in store surveillance footage. Last month, the agency adopted policies governing its use, noting that officers in the field can use real-time face recognition to identify suspects who are unwilling or unable to provide their own ID, or if someone’s life is in danger. “We are not mass-collecting. We are not putting a camera out on a street corner,” said Deputy Jeff Talbot, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office. “We want our local community to be aware of what we’re doing, how we’re
using it to solve crimes - what it is and, just as importantly, what it is not.” It cost the sheriff’s office just $400 to load 305,000 booking photos - which are already public records - into the system and $6 a month in fees to continue the service, according to an email obtained by the ACLU under a public records request. Last year, the Orlando, Florida, Police Department announced it would begin a pilot program relying on Amazon’s technology to “use existing city resources to provide real-time detection and notification of persons-ofinterest, further increasing public safety.” Orlando has a network of
public safety cameras, and in a presentation posted to YouTube this month, Ranju Das, who leads Amazon Rekognition, said the company would receive feeds from the cameras, search them against photos of people being sought by law enforcement and notify police of any hits. “It’s about recognizing people, it’s about tracking people, and then it’s about doing this in real time, so that the law enforcement officers ... can be then alerted in real time to events that are happening,” he said. The Orlando Police Department said in an email that it “is not using the technology in an investigative capacity or in any public spaces at this time.” The testing has been limited to eight city-owned cameras and a handful of officers who volunteered to have their images used to see if the technology works, Sgt. Eduardo Bernal wrote in an email. “As this is a pilot and not being actively used by OPD as a surveillance tool, there is no policy or procedure regarding its use as it is not deployed in that manner,” Bernal wrote. The privacy advocates’ letter to Amazon followed public records requests from ACLU chapters in California, Oregon and Florida. More than two dozen organizations signed it, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Human Rights Watch.

Police probe suspected illegal e-waste recycling By Tassanee Vejpongsa Associated Press Police have raided several factories near Bangkok that allegedly were using a loophole to illegally import and process electronic waste. Police and industry ministry officials said that they were still investigating after raids last week on at least four factories in industrial parks in the outskirts of the capital that found nearly 100 tons of electronic waste such as discarded computers, computer display screens, old mobile phones and other items. “These factories have not received permission to operate and will be closed pending further investigation into the cases,” said Weerakit Runthakithanarat, a ministry official in Chachoengsao province, which is adjacent to Bangkok. He said another 10 factories were due to be inspected by June 15. He said police were examining the companies’ import permits and bringing in experts to determine what sorts of materials were being processed at the sites. The police said in a statement that the factories that were raided last week were ordered to get all the waste stored outside indoors within a week. No charges had been filed yet. Television and newspaper reports showed vast industrial sites filled with big bags of waste and big factories where workers in cloth gloves and simple face masks were taking apart the electronics equipment. Police were questioning managers of a Taiwan company about the how the factories, which were authorized only to handle domestic recycling,
In this photo taken Thursday, May 24, 2018, a factory processing electronic waste is visited by police in Lat Krabang, outside Bangkok. (Royal Thai Police via AP) obtained such large quantities of foreign e-waste. The suspicion was that they used a legal loophole allowing imports of second-hand appliances. “Thailand does have this loophole where it allows imports of electronic goods — for reuse purposes — when in fact they are mining materials from these old machines without any regard for the environmental and health impacts,” Somnuck Jongmeewasin, a professor at Silapakorn University who has done research on hazardous waste disposal, told The Associated Press. He said Thailand had eased restrictions on such waste processing and recycling plants last year to help cope with the domestic garbage and waste problem. Instead, some factories are using the opportunity to illegally process waste from overseas. Electronic waste creates huge health hazards. Many components are laden with lead and mercury, cadmium and other toxins. Lax controls mean that facilities often burn plastics to release encased copper and
use unsafe methods to extract precious metals. Somnuck said Thai authorities lack the capacity to adequately regulate such facilities. The police raids followed complaints from residents living near the factories over bad smells, overflowing waste and burning sensations on their skin. “Factory owners have to give assurances to local communities that if there are impacts on environment, like water pollution, they will take preventive measures and be able to pay compensation for any damages,” said Suwit Kumdee, governor of Chachoengsao. For years, Chinese waste processors, often working in extremely hazardous conditions, have handled a huge share of the world’s e-waste despite a ban on imports of such materials. A ban on other types of waste that took effect Jan. 1 has left many countries struggling over how to cope. The Thai waste processing facilities were employing mostly migrant workers from Myanmar, officials said.
DIW chief: Electronic waste import can benefit country The import of electronic waste to Thailand could benefit the country from the recycling processes using appropriate technology which prevents negative effects to surrounding communities, says DIW chief. He said this in response to a public concern that the imported toxic waste would have negative impacts to environment and communities.
The Department of Industrial Works Director-General, Mongkol Pruekwatana, said the import of electronic waste into Thailand can be done only with an advance approval and under strict control from the authorities. He said the toxic waste in question is mainly the waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), which can be disassembled in
proper facilities that use advanced technology and pollution control methods in order to extract iron from the electronic components. This practice is considered the way to make the most out of available resources. The director-general added that all import of electronic waste into Thailand must be pre-approved by Thai authorities and the authorities from the country of origin in accordance with the Basel Convention, adding that the import approval will only be granted to factories intending to use these components as raw material, not for reselling. Unauthorized import of electronic waste, or false custom declaration, will result in legal penalties to importers, which could be as high as two years imprisonment. (NNT)

European nations preparing for Gen Prayut’s visit European countries are preparing for Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s planned visit in June. Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai said the Thai premier will travel to European nations this month to visit several countries. Gen Prayut’s visit to Europe was originally scheduled for May, but due to his busy schedule, his trip had to be postponed. The Foreign Ministry and the host countries are yet to determine the exact date of Gen Prayut’s visit, according to Don. The European Union late last year announced that it would resume political contact at all levels with Thailand after putting relations on hold following the 2014 coup by the Thai military.
PM Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to visit the EU this month. Since the announcement, Thailand has welcomed many European diplomats and attaches including those from the UK, Italy, and France. In March 2018, Don visited EU headquarters and met with a number of high-ranking
officials such as the deputy prime minister of Belgium and his Italian counterpart. Lastly, he said European nations are looking forward to meeting the Thai Prime Minister and discussing a wide array of matters.
Thailand in talks with US on tax waiver for Thai steel The Thai Ministry of Commerce is awaiting a decision from the United States following its request for an exemption of import tariffs on steel products from Thailand. After the US government resolved to increase duties on steel imports to 25 percent in March, Adul Chotinisakorn, Director-General of Thailand’s Department of Foreign Trade, disclosed that the Ministry
of Commerce had submitted a letter to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), asking the agency to consider exempting Thailand from steel tariffs just as South Korea has been excepted. According to the DirectorGeneral, the request had earlier been discussed with the USTR during the ThaiUS Trade and Investment
Framework Agreement Joint Council Meeting in early April. In the meantime, the department has assisted Thai steel exporters to negotiate with importers in the US in seeking tax waivers for certain products. As the USTR has accepted the request for consideration, Adul confirmed that the Commerce Ministry is keeping an eye out for any decision from the agency.
Thailand to up controls on paraquat, other farm chemicals By Tassanee Vejpongsa, Associated Press The Thai government said it will allow continued use of the toxic weed killer paraquat and two other farm chemicals despite mounting concerns over health risks, but plans to tighten controls on how they are utilized. The expert Committee on Hazardous Substances Control asked the Department of Agriculture to come up with new guidelines within two months, Somboon Yindeeyoungyuen, deputy permanent secretary of the Ministry of Industry, told reporters. “The committee gave many recommendations and ideas to the DOA to consider, for example, allowing only registered sprayers to use herbicides, training farmers on safety measures, restrictions on imports, and rules for buyers and sellers, so that the DOA can come up with measures that would ensure safety for all,” Somboon said. Environmental advocates have been urging the government to follow the example of more than 30 other countries and ban paraquat. The issue has drawn much attention after a spate of cases of flesh-eating bacterial
Farmers cut grass at a rice field in Ayutthaya province, central Thailand. (AP PhotoApichart Weerawong, File) diseases in parts of northern Thailand that some researchers believe may be linked to exposure to paraquat. Critics also question the safety of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the widely used weedkiller Roundup, though its manufacturer Monsanto insists the chemical is safe. Somboon said 18 of the 24people on the committee supported continued use of the chemicals. “The committee considered all the information, including impacts on health and the environment, from both sides, those who support the ban and those are against, and we decided that we don’t have enough data to ban the usage
of these chemicals,” he said. Paraquat is the main ingredient in Swiss-based Syngenta AG’s Gramoxone — one of the world’s three most widely used weedkillers — but it also is sold under other brand names. Most paraquat is made in China, where authorities plan to ban use of the chemical as of September 2020. Use of paraquat has risen sharply in Thailand, partly due to growing resistance to glyphosate. The government experts found that more than half the farmers they surveyed had used paraquat incorrectly, such as in higher concentrations than recommended.

Public hearing in Phuket to solve monkey problem
CentralWorld promotes world heritage sites to boost tourism
One of the largest shopping destinations in Thailand, CentralWorld, recently hosted a “World Heritage Journey” event in the hope of triggering tourism to ancient provinces. Presiding over the opening ceremony May 25, Deputy Governor of Phetchaburi province Worapoj Waewsingngam said tourism is the main source of income for Thailand and its people. During the past 2-3 years, the central province of Phetchaburi has seen an increase

in the number of tourists, partly because the city has been promoted as one of the twelve must-see provinces in Thailand. The province has a lot to offer for those interested in history and culture, housing a number of Buddhist temples and natural attractions. Realizing the importance of PR in the tourism industry, the Phetchaburi Tourism and Sports Office and its allies hosted the “World Heritage Journey” event at CentralWorld in
central Bangkok to promote four historic cities, namely Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Si Thep of Phetchaburi, and Luang Prabang in Laos. Ending May 27, the event featured an exhibition on the four ancient sites, a photo zone, a performance zone where visitors could enjoy traditional and cultural shows, and a product zone that offered a wide variety of locally-made items including handicraft products and food specialties. Turning up the volume
Gioacchino Rossini. One of the most obvious differences between classical music and most forms of popular music is that the former invariably makes use of contrasts in loudness whereas the latter usually doesn’t. The
vast majority of pop songs and folk songs tend to be the same degree of loudness throughout. In contrast, classical music makes frequent use of dramatic contrasts between soft and loud passages.
But it wasn’t always thus. Before the Early Renaissance, the concept of varying degrees of loudness, which we now call dynamics wasn’t given much attention. The 16th century composer Giovanni Gabrieli was one of the first to indicate dynamics in music notation, but did so sparingly - as did everyone else. However, during the Baroque, the emerging violin family permitted far more contrast in dynamics than the older viols and gradually composers began using softness and loudness as a means of expression. In printed music, dynamics are indicated by abbreviated Italian terms. The indication to play softly is shown by a “p” which stands for the Italian word piano. The opposite is shown by the letter “f” which stands for the word forte. These two words gave their name to an early kind of piano known as a fortepiano, because it could literally play loudly and softly, which the clavichord couldn’t. By the 19th century, composers had gradually pushed the dynamic boundaries outwards. A passage marked “pp” (pianissimo) or “ppp” is virtually a musical whisper whereas the loudest passages are marked “ff” (fortissimo) or even in some extreme cases “ffff’, which is about as loud as you can get. The concept of gradually increasing the volume known as a crescendo – didn’t appear until the mid-18 th century. The idea was developed, along with many other innovations by composers
of the Mannheim School, who wrote for the orchestra of Duke Charles-Theodore. The crescendo and its opposite, the diminuendo became favourite musical devices in the opera. The Italian composer Rossini developed a technique of gradually increasing the volume, a device which he often used in his opera overtures. This dramatic effect has become known, not surprisingly as the Rossini crescendo. However, these extended crescendi (and note my pernickety use of the Italian plural) are not simply a matter of telling the orchestra to play louder and louder. There’s much more to them than that.
Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868): Overture - La gazza ladra. Mannheim Philharmonic Orchestra cond. Boian Videnoff (Duration: 09:38; Video: 1080p HD) Rossini’s opera La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie) is best known for its overture, famous for its use of snare drums which must have taken the audience aback at the opera’s first performance in 1817. The work contains a splendid example of the Rossini crescendo. Well, two actually. After the percussive
opening and a rumbustious melody the crescendo section begins (04.18) with a graceful lilting melody on the oboe accompanied by light strings and interjections from the clarinet and low brass. Rossini gradually adds more instruments and increases the number of musical events making the music not only louder but busier. It culminates in a joyful climax (06:09) with vigorous descending scales on the trombone – another Rossini trademark. Then, not one to miss a good opportunity, Rossini goes through the whole routine again (07:08) but this time using different orchestration. As the crescendo develops he changes the harmonies more rapidly giving the effect of increasing tension and increased speed. And towards the end, we hear another favourite Rossini trick (09:08) when he suddenly ratchets up the tempo and brings the overture to a heroic conclusion.
Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937): Boléro. Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra cond. Gustavo Dudamel (Duration: 17:31; Video: 1080p HD) Ravel’s most popular work is an orchestral piece that is
built on a long and measured crescendo. It was originally a ballet and a sensational success when it was premiered at the Paris Opéra in November 1928. Nobody was more surprised at its success than Ravel himself. Boléro begins with a snare drum playing an insistent rhythm pianissimo close to rim and this relentless rhythm dominates the entire work. Then at 00:33 we hear a faintly Arabicsounding tune played softly on a solo flute. This melody, which came to Ravel when he was on holiday in Saint-Jean-de-Luz dominates the piece and it’s played on different instruments, some rarely seen in the symphony orchestra including the tiny E flat clarinet and the alto and soprano saxophones. Gradually the loudness, the texture and the tension is slowly tightened as more and more instruments are added. There’s a dramatic change of key at 16:27 when the entire orchestra thunders out the melody. Dudamel and the Vienna Philharmonic give a memorable performance, and just watching Dudamel conduct is an uplifting experience. Now there’s a man who clearly loves his job.

Author unravels new view of Cinderella story Lincee Ray Have you ever considered the beloved fairy tale of Cinderella from the perspective of the evil stepmother? What if she wasn’t wicked at all, but a loving woman who cared deeply for all of her children? Danielle Teller’s debut novel, “All the Ever Afters: The Untold Story of Cinderella’s Stepmother,” answers this question with a fascinating reimagining of the original tale. Before Agnes was an “evil” stepmother, she was a laundry girl and a housemaid. Agnes is strong, independent and a hard worker, but that doesn’t stop her from being seduced by a young man who has no intention of marrying her once it’s evident that she’s pregnant. Agnes is asked to leave her housemaid job and finds sanctuary in a nearby village. Even though her “traveling husband” is barely around, she eventually makes a home for him and their two daughters. Her determination to survive pushes her forward in life. When tragedy strikes on all fronts, Agnes is forced to send the girls to school while she takes a job as a nursemaid to the infant daughter of the manor’s Lord and Lady. The child’s name is Elfida. Everyone calls her Ella.
Agnes develops a sweet bond with Ella and treats the young girl as her own. She raises Ella to be kind, gentle and full of compassion. Sadly, after Ella’s mother suddenly dies Agnes is left running the household, as well as raising the Lord’s daughter. It only makes sense for the two to eventually marry. Agnes doesn’t want to be a spinster. The Lord doesn’t want to raise a young girl on his own. With Ella already attached to Agnes, the union seems logical. After they marry, Agnes brings her daughters back to live at the manor. Ella is threatened by the unique bond between Agnes and her other daughters. She broods in the attic, befriends rodents and whines when Agnes suggests that Ella isn’t grateful for all her father has given their family. As punishment, Agnes makes her do laundry for an entire day. Soon after, rumors begin to swirl that Agnes forces Ella to live in the attic and do the cleaning for the entire manor. What’s worse is that Agnes has refused to let Ella go to the king’s ball. “All the Ever Afters” provides a unique view of Ella’s circumstances and how the young girl was far from perfect. Readers will feel empathy for Agnes, consider various misunderstandings and think twice before labeling her as wicked. (AP)

Insane as ever, ‘Deadpool 2’ doesn’t disappoint
Mark Kennedy Los Angeles (AP) - At a recent screening of “Deadpool 2,” the audience didn’t get up when the end credits came up, patiently sitting through the scrolling names of visual effects supervisors and lighting specialists. Real “Deadpool” fans know to stick around until the ushers toss them out. That’s because the filmmakers aren’t content with containing their sprawling, anarchic and subversive hero in any conventional box. No, in the world of Deadpool, even the boring end credits are studded with jokes and teases. So hold onto your seats as Ryan Reynolds once more dons the red suit and katana swords for this saucy, overstuffed and very entertaining sequel to the 2016
massive hit “Deadpool,” which became the second-highest grossing R-rated film in the U.S. after “The Passion of the Christ.” How do we know that? Deadpool happily brags about it in the new film, continuing his breaking-thefourth-wall humor. Just some of the other things that get derided this time are “Yentl,” ‘’Frozen,” ‘’Stranger Things,” Wolverine, Jared Kushner, cultural appropriation, Brad Pitt, the Norwegian band A-ha, “Basic Instinct,” ‘’Robocop,” fanny packs, “Say Anything,” dubstep, “Sharknado” and Reynolds himself, who mocks his disastrous earlier decision to play Green Lantern. “Deadpool 2” is as gruesome and violent as the first, but perhaps the biggest victim is the very concept of superhero movies. Our anti-hero adores mocking the moral clarity, earnestness and predictable stunts of his distant cousins. And, as a Marvel property, he especially delights in lampooning D.C. Comics. “So dark,” Deadpool says to
This image released by Twentieth Century Fox shows Ryan Reynolds in a scene from “Deadpool 2.” (Twentieth Century Fox via AP) another superhero. “Are you sure you’re not from the DC Universe?” In this film, which reunites the original writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Warnick, we begin by finding our unkillable mercenary in the same domestic bliss where we left him. But if “Deadpool” was an origin story, “Deadpool 2” is a quest tale and our hero this time encounters the time traveling soldier Cable (Josh Brolin), a motley crew of
mutants he calls X-Force — “Isn’t that a little derivative?” someone asks snarkily — and various superheroes and mutants, all set to a lively soundtrack that includes Air Supply, Peter Gabriel, “Annie” and an original song with filthy lyrics. If something can be oddly sweet while heads are being decapitated, it’s this film. Some favorites from the first film are back — some only briefly — such as housemate
Leslie Uggams, girlfriend Morena Baccarin and cab driver Karan Soni. The new characters don’t have time to make much of an impression, except for Zazie Beetz from “Atlanta” who has a great turn as Domino, a strong, sardonic superhero who relies on luck. (Someone please write her own film.) Deadpool, of course, helps us along the film’s convoluted plot with such post-modern cracks as “Big CGI fight coming up!” or the put-down, “That’s just lazy writing” or, after a cool sequence, “Tell me they got that in slow motion.” Director David Leitch replaces Tim Miller but there’s been no noticeable change in tone or corrosion in the franchise’s terrific special effects. If anything, the surprising success of the original has resulted in more money and more insane sequences, like a chase sequence with a truck convoy and a bizarre scene when Deadpool’s legs regrow after he is cut in half, giving him baby limbs for a time.
Reynolds is once again at his arch and nihilist best here, while acting and jumping in so much facial prosthetics that it makes him look like he’s inside melted cheese — or, as the first movie put it, an avocado that had relations with an older avocado. To really appreciate “Deadpool 2” you have to have seen the original and probably every other Marvel superhero film, too. And be up on pop culture, from Cher to Broadway musicals. (It’s a good thing there’s no quiz at the end.) Speaking of ends, don’t embarrass yourself by getting up to leave when it seems to be over. And get ready to happily sit through “Deadpool 3,” too. “Deadpool 2,” 20th Century Fox release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “strong violence and language throughout, sexual references and brief drug material.” Running time: 119 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Los Angeles (AP) — The estate of Michael Jackson is objecting to an ABC TV special on the end of the King of Pop’s life, calling it a crass attempt to exploit Jackson without respect for his legacy or children. The estate said in a statement that “The Last Days of Michael Jackson” is not sponsored or approved by Jackson’s heirs, and violates their intellectual property rights — an assertion ABC denies. “We believe the special to be another crass and unauthorized attempt to exploit the life, music and image of Michael Jackson without respect for
Michael’s legacy, intellectual property rights or his children,” the estate’s statement says. But the network said the documentary is a legitimate work of journalism on a newsworthy subject. “ABC News’ documentary explores the life, career and legacy of Michael Jackson, who remains of great interest to people worldwide,” ABC said in a statement. Producers said the twohour documentary, aired last week, aimed to reveal new information on Jackson and focus on his apparent decline in the run-up to his death at 50 on June 25, 2009. was using a copyrighted silhouette and photo to promote the special, but it stopped after demands from Jackson attorneys. The estate said it believed other intellectual property was used without permission, including music, photos and artwork. “It is particularly disheartening that Disney, a company known to strongly believe in protecting its own IP rights, would choose to ignore these rights belonging to the Estate,” the statement said. ABC is owned by Disney. ABC responded that the “program does not infringe on his
estate’s rights, but as a courtesy, we removed a specific image from the promotional material.” An autopsy determined that Jackson died of acute propofol intoxication. The superstar had been taking the prescription anesthetic as a sleep aid during preparations for a series of comeback concerts called “This Is It.” Former cardiologist Conrad Murray was convicted in 2011 of involuntary manslaughter for giving Jackson a fatal dose of the drug. He served two years in jail for causing Jackson’s death. Murray’s conviction was upheld in 2014.

David Bowie: ‘The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust’
mott@pattayamail.com When this album was released in 1972, it was nearly the cause for this Dog to dye his hair fluorescent orange and effect blue eye shadow. Fortunately a stout collar and lead were put in place before this manifestation took place. But nonetheless, this album had a profound effect on the history of rock ‘n’ roll. In soccer parlance, this album took David Bowie from a relegation candidate in Division Three to a Premier League champion in the
blink of a mascara adorned eye. When Bowie created Ziggy Stardust, he created a monster that would take him on one of the most exciting roller-coaster rides in the history of the entertainment industry. The songs that Bowie wrote for this album were his strongest so far. Also, by taking the heavy rock from the previous year’s “Man Who Sold The World” and the power pop of “Hunky Dory”, which was only six months old, he created the perfect concept album. Bowie then had the musical nuance to pick the perfect musicians to make his dreams of stardom come true. With the band standing satin-trousered beside Bowie, Mick Ronson tore every ounce of emotion from his
David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust (right) and Trevor Bolder. guitars and pushed Bowie’s songs into another dimension. Listen to the gut wrenching savagery of “Moonage Daydream” (the guitar solo at the end of which has often been imitated but never bettered), the glittering riffs in the title track, and the sheer unadulterated, irresistible boogie of “Suffragette City”. This makes you realize that Bowie could never have done this without the platinum haired Spider from Hull, Mick Ronson.
The lyrics are thrust in your face and rammed down your throat. Then there are Bowie’s excursions into the future, such as the image heavy “Star Man” - He’d like to come and meet us but he thinks he’d blow our minds. This is followed by the album’s final number, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide”, which also closed the live set, with the vocalist entreating the audience to ‘hold’ him before he’s taken away.
Nevertheless, Bowie would soon tire of the Ziggy persona (splitting up the Spiders at the peak of their powers). This dramatic music with its swaggering saxophones, rough edged guitars, tinkling piano, bombastic drumming and its crisp production cut a swathe through the music industry. It created its own category of glam rock and also changed fashion forever. The concerts were amazing but you had to have the
music and this album was full of cutting-edge songs that hold up decades later. Climb into your platform boots, shake out your spandex and, as the Leper Messiah preached, “Let your imagination soar”. 5 stars for the Starman. A farewell to the road for Paul Simon David Bauder New York (AP) — Farewell tours don’t always mean farewell, but are a ripe time for appreciation and appraisal. Paul Simon’s concerts and a new biography offer the opportunity for both. Simon’s “Homeward Bound” tour began last month in Vancouver and takes him across North America, to Europe and an eventual conclusion with three dates back home in New York City. Simon, who’s 76, isn’t retiring. He has an album due out this fall and promises he’ll still occasionally appear on stage. Since he started writing songs as a teenager, it’s hard to imagine that impulse shutting off forever. He’s done with the idea of long concert tours, though, so if you want to see him perform, this is probably it. The death of his lead guitarist and friend, Vincent N’guini, last December influenced his decision to step away, Simon said in a statement when the tour was announced. (He has declined interview requests). “Mostly, though, I feel the travel and time away from my wife and
family takes a toll that detracts from the joy of playing,” he said. The set list from the tour’s opener in Vancouver indicates that he’s exploring the breadth of his career — from Simon & Garfunkel favorites like “Mrs. Robinson” and “America” to touchstones from “Graceland” and recent fare “Dazzling Blue” and “Rewrite.” With a 16-piece band, he often searches for new ways to tell familiar stories. “He was far more a curious musician than a self-congratulatory, self-repeating pop star,” wrote Jon Pareles of The New York Times in his review of opening night. Simon’s musical restlessness sets him apart from many peers, said Robert Hilburn, author of the just-released book “Paul Simon: The Life.” Simon was interviewed by Hilburn for the book. Many of Simon’s contemporaries aren’t interested in pushing boundaries or have fans who resist if they do. Simon’s last few albums have been adventurous, earning him critical and commercial success. Many people forget that Simon spent years as a mediocre writer searching for pop hits until his

(Jimmy Jeong/ The Canadian Press via AP) breakthrough song, “The Sound of Silence,” Hilburn said. “Once he became this great songwriter, he realized right away that you’re always in jeopardy,” he said. “There are always these distractions and temptations. He had this determination and intelligence to know that music is the most important thing — that you could never master it and never take it for granted.” Hilburn believes that the desire to stretch himself musically was the biggest factor in Simon’s break
with partner Art Garfunkel in 1970, not the famous prickly relationship between the childhood chums. “If he hadn’t left Simon & Garfunkel, he’d have burned out like all the others,” Hilburn said. The two are more distant than ever after an unpleasant end to the “Old Friends” tour in 2012, and Garfunkel declined requests to be interviewed for Hilburn’s biography. So it would be wise not to expect another reunion soon. For the book, Hilburn pressed Simon to reveal details of the 2014 incident where Simon and his wife, Edie Brickell, were arrested on disorderly conduct charges for a fight at their Connecticut home. Without setting the record straight, it would remain a defining image of their marriage, he argued. Simon refused; instead, a photo of him and Brickell later renewing their vows at their Montauk, New York, home is in the book, standing as Simon’s testimony to the endurance of their relationship. Even though two of his three wives — Brickell and Carrie Fisher — were celebrities in their own right when they were married, Simon has
generally been reluctant to feed the media machine. Hilburn believes that has cost him popularity through the years. Instead, people know Simon through his songs, and they’re likely to be remembered long after he’s gone, he said. In fact, that legacy drives the album he’s been working on for release this fall. He records again some of the compositions he’s particularly proud of that were lost along the way in terms of public attention. One song on the Vancouver playlist, “Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War,” is a likely target. Even though Hilburn was the first biographer that Simon cooperated with, they had their clashes. Hilburn wrote that he feared the project was close to breaking down. But ultimately he said Simon kept his word that Hilburn would be the final arbiter of what was written, and gradually opened up. “With all of the success he’s had, he still loves it when people love the music,” Hilburn said. “He wants people to love the music, not necessarily to like him. But I think if they got to know him, they will get to like him.”

Control your sex hormones the natural way Control your sex hormones the natural way, was the general theme provided by Dr. Pantalee Chuensampan M.D. at the Sunday, May 20, Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) meeting. Dr. Pantalee is from the Health Promotion Center of Bangkok Hospital Pattaya (BHP) specializing in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. She spoke about the functions of sex hormones in men, a subject that is almost obsessive with many of her male patients. She also talked about the female hormones as well. She talked about the classes of hormones, effects of ageing, including metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular and other diseases. She outlined the common laboratory evaluations and treatments, which included pharmaceutical, but she placed her emphasis on natural approaches.
Dr. Pantalee Chuensampan, M.D., from Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, speaks about the functions of sex hormones, testosterone for men and estrogen for women, outlining the effects of low levels and treatments available, but she emphasized on how to increase them naturally through diet. For men, she explains, the sex hormone testosterone helps to maintain health, stamina, libido, memory and well-being. However, “Low-T” can cause fatigue, mood swings and irritability. This hormone starts to decline in men at around 35 years of age. A chart was presented that showed men, at age 4554 lose about 34% of their testosterone, then by age 65-74, about 40% is lost and after the age of 85, 50% is commonly lost. Some of the symptoms of low testosterone include reduced sexual desire, loss of body hair, decreased frequency of shaving, height loss, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, increased breast tissue and an enlarged prostate. Symptoms may not appear for 2-4 years prior to actually having “Low-T”. The doctor discussed lab evaluations, including serum “Total-T” having results of less than 300 ng/dL and “Free-T” of less than 5 ng/dL being low. A test of the salivary is also available. She talked about fasting insulin, fasting blood

including serum estradiol, progesterone, LH, FSH testing, blood-sugar and other tests. Treatment of low estrogen generally involves the use of a high-dose of estrogen, but she emphasized that such treatment may not lower the risk of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). She also talked about bioidentical hormones, which are hormones that are made in a laboratory and phytoestrogens which are compounds that naturally occur in plants and plant foods. She emphasized maintaining correct insulin and blood-sugar sensitivity, a decrease of cholesterol and weight loss. She advocated the natural approach for estrogen health, with such products as soybean, tofu, tao jeaw, tempeh and natto. She also likes flaxseed, coconut water, fenugreek and curcuma comosa.
MC Richard Silverberg opened the PCEC Sunday meeting by thanking Bangkok Hospital Pattaya for providing nurses to give free blood sugar and blood pressure checks to members and guests and then calling on new visitors to introduce themselves by giving their name and where they are originally from. The common denominator between the genders is the control of insulin-sensitivity/blood-sugar levels, a decrease of cholesterol and weight loss. She recommends increasing insulin-sensitivity with bitter melons, Thai pea eggplant, gym nena silvestre and cinnamon. To lower lipid levels, she recommends the use of roselle juice, plant sterols, safflower, eggplant, Thai garlic, omega-3 fatty acids and tocotrienol. Decrease visceral fat with finger root, Thai ginseng, black ginger, Thai holy basil, garcinia camogie and ginger. After the presentation, everyone was brought up to date on upcoming events which was then followed by the Open Forum where members and guests can ask questions or make comments about Expat living in Thailand. Visakha Bucha Day marked by prayer and merit-making Jetsada Homklin
releasing birds, fish, snails and other living beings that they believe to be ‘trapped’. Doing so also generates good karma for those making merit. As the sun fell, Buddhists lit candles and marched in the traditional “wien tien” procession around temple halls. Others engaged in meditation after laying flower garlands on Buddha images. For non-Buddhists, Pattaya seemed as quiet as the temples during meditation. All bars were closed and alcohol could not be sold from midnight to midnight. Marking the triple occasion of the birth of Buddha, the day of his enlightenment and his ascension to Nirvana, Visakha Bucha Day is one of the three holiest days on the Buddhist calendar and previously was designated by USESCO as “World Peace Day.” The educational, scientific and cultural organization’s proclamation cited Buddhism’s teaching of humanity, mercy and tolerance as the reasons for the designation.

Pattaya residents crowded temples to mark the birth, enlightenment and death of Lord Buddha on Visakha Bucha Day, the most important memorial day in Budhism. Believers began the day early, taking children and relatives to make merit at local temples. Food and desserts were given as offerings to monks, who returned the favor by teaching Dharma. Many elderly worshippers followed tradition in wearing white and eating only vegetarian meals on the holiest of Buddhist holidays. Local temples held meritmaking ceremonies while at other places, such as Chaimongkol Temple in South Pattaya, people donated items to be consumed in the monks’ morning meal. Others gave cash in envelopes as well as baskets filled with necessities. Most attending services dressed in white to demonstrate purity. But holiday activities didn’t end at the temple gate. Many families were seen on beaches and in local parks

The children are thankful for the love and care of visiting Rotarians from Pattaya.
President Margret Deter and President Elect Maneeya Engelking of the Rotary E-Club Dolphin Pattaya visited Bodhgaya in India’s Bihar state last January when the daytime temperatures can hit as low as 8 degrees Celsius. Most of the population in that area is very poor, with many going barefooted in the cold and elderly women are seen sitting wrapped in shawls on the roadside. The two Rotarians handed out 340 locally made sweaters at the two schools which were purchased for about 300 baht each.
Maneeya and her friends serve rice and curries to the poor people in the village. In addition, Margret and Maneeya gave each student 10 rupees, equivalent to six baht, which can keep them going for one full day in those parts. Rotarian Engelking travels regularly to Bodhgaya and is very concerned about the welfare of the people there. She donated an additional 100,000 baht while Deter chipped in another 20,000 baht to help the poor. Just outside Bodhgaya is
a small community whose residents are quite poor. There are many children ranging from 6-14 years old who do not get an education. Kind-hearted volunteer teachers look after at least 12 of these abandoned children. Engelking arranged to buy 400 school books in English and Hindi that were distributed to the children. They also distributed food and drinks to about 200 poor people in the area.

Coghlan collects the mug PSC Golf from Tropical Golf Group Tuesday, May 22, Crystal Bay – Stroke The day was planned to be at Bangpakong Country Club but we found late on that they were coring the greens at this time so we changed to Crystal Bay at the last moment. Not a bad change actually as Crystal Bay is much closer and also not as costly. With a normal ‘Low Season’ number of players we set off on the C & B nines off the white tees. All went well till we reached C7, which is a par-3 island green and was 170 yards or so over water. Many golfers find this difficult and this being a monthly mug day and a stroke competition, many hopes ended in the water. Certainly I was
5 off the tee here. Trouble was also waiting for us at the first Par 5 on the B nine, which is also a long drive over water and also caused problems for many golfers. See water, hit water! The greens were a bit slower than one would expect but the course was playable. The winner of the monthly mug, sponsored by BJ’s Holiday Lodge, was Mick Coghlan with a fine net 64. In second was John Davis with a net 69, ahead of Takeshi Hakozaki in third with a net 71. In fourth place was Mashi Kaneta with a net 72 and then we had a count-back on net 73 that saw Dick Warberg in fifth and Brian Parish sixth.

Friday May 25, Pattana – Stableford One of the regular courses on our rotation was on tap this day, Pattana Sports Club. Would we get around without
Cliff burns bright at Phoenix The Jomtien Golf Society Monday, May 21, Silky Oaks Stableford Our first game here for some time and there were two divisions out with the equal cut at 9-15.6 and 15.7+. A nice change to be back here but the greens on the front nine were so woolley they were incredibly slow and the back nine just a touch quicker. Nik Evans recorded the highest score of the day, winning division 1 with 37 points while Neil Gamble took second after beating Paul Butler on a 15/14 back-nine countback, both with 32 points. Joe Peters topped division 2 with 32 points and one point behind was Paul Young who beat Alan Bissell 13/11 on the back six countback after they both scored 15 on the back nine. Near pins went to (Div 1) Paul Butler and Neil Gamble, and (Div 2) William Chang. In the ‘2’s today Nik Evans birdied the 6th and Frank Grainger the 8th in division 2.
Wednesday, May 23, Phoenix Gold Stableford Another first round here today for some considerable time for various reasons and with the Lakes nine still closed we were playing the Mountain and Ocean nines. An almost identical cut as of Monday and with 41
getting wet was the question on everyone’s mind as we headed off after breakfast. We had received word we would be playing the C & B nines in that order so the usual fear of the opening tee shot facing water both right and left on B-1 was not a worry. After a quick check in and change in the great locker room, we were off C1 playing “ball-in-hand, through
the green” as carts were restricted to the path only. This proved to be a wise decision as the fairways, while in very good condition, were sodden and gave up little roll, picking up globs of mud. While C’s greens showed a little coring around the edges they were in good shape and rolling at a fair speed. Most were caught out by several pin positions where if you got the ball to the hole with enough speed and did not have the precise line, you were faced with a 10 -12 footer coming back as the slope took it well off to the side. The biggest complaint of the day was the fact the two drink stands on C were not open. Nine holes without a place to replenish ones water supply is not acceptable in these hot and humid weather conditions. The course management was informed of this concern and
we trust they will take appropriate corrective action. With all groups finished and headed to the showers in less than 4½ hours, the scorecards were collected and we were making our way back to Pattaya without any rain. With only one flight today and five places up for grabs the scores were very good and those not equaling their handicap were left to applaud and hope one of their 9 hole scores would get them a mention. With a fine 39 points, Dave “DB” Cooper (C/H 26) took the top spot over a trio at 37 points. In count back order of finish, they were John Davis (13), Steve Truelove (12) and Mashi Kaneta (16). Getting the final call in fifth place was “Buckers” Buckingham (23) with a fine 36 points. Bob Britton and Dick Warberg took home the “Best 9’s” prizes.
Blake bounces back at Burapha The Tara Court Golf Society Sunday, May 20, Green Valley - Stableford
Steven Cliff and Leo Adam. points Steven Cliff won division 2 ahead of Leo Adam in second on 40, Peter Davies third with 34 and Alan Bissell coming fourth on 32. A 21/18 back-nine countback saw Ian Speirs beat Paul Butler for first place in the premier flight after they both scored 37 points. Paul Young was third on 33 points and Neil Gamble fourth with 32. Near Pins were claimed by (Div 1) Paul Butler, Conrad (2) and Neil Gamble, and (Div 2) Leo Adam, Alan Bissell and Frank Grainger. In the ‘2’s today there was a rollover in division 1 but Leo Adam and Alan Bissell both birdied Ocean 5 to share the division 2 spoils.
Friday, May 25, Eastern Star Stableford The highest turnout of the week with the two divisional
cut coming at 4-17 and 18+ and the Hua Hin champion was successful again as Dave Edwards won division 1 with 39 points. Paul Butler came in second on 36 points, John Batty was third with 34 and Russell Goldsworthy, playing off 4, finished fourth with 31 points. In division 2, 33 points was the highest score of the day with Leo Adam beating Steven Cliff on a 19/15 countback to take top spot. Peter Davies came in third with 30 points and Tony Thorne finished fourth with 28. Near pins went to (Div 1) John Batty (2), Dave Edwards and John Hughes, and (Div 2) Leo Adam, Steven Cliff, Frank Kelly and Khalifa Nasser. Dave Edwards birdied the 3rd and in division 2 Steven Cliff the 6th for the only ‘2’s winners of the day.
We had 13 players today on what was a very hot and humid day. The course was quiet when we arrived and we were away 15 minutes early. Despite catching a 5-ball by the 6th hole we still got around in less than 4 hours. The course is in great condition at the moment and this was reflected in the scoring today. In first place was Ian Corica (H/cap 28) with a great 41 points. Not far away in second came Donal McGuigan (18) with 39 points, third went to Kevyn Wright (13) 38 and the fourth and final podium place was won on a count-back, with Pat Carty (20) getting the nod over Joe Peters (21), both with 35 points.
Tuesday, May 22, Plutaluang - Stableford As it is low season we decided to try a course that we have not played for years, Plutaluang Navy. We were told on arrival that the N/W course was being prepared for a large tournament and carts were on the path only, so we decided to try the S/E course which had full buggy access to the fairways: 1200 baht for G/F, cart & caddy or 680 baht walking was a very good price. The bunkers on the East course looked like they had not seen a rake in many months but the greens were generally good with a couple having some sandy patches on them. The rain stayed away and we were around in under 4 hours. As a lot had not played this course before the scoring was not great, with no-one breaking their handicap. First place was decided on C/B with Kevyn Wright (13) beating Kevin Blake (8), both on 35 points. A distant third
Kevin Blake. was Donal McGuigan (18) on 30 points. Pat Carty had the only ‘2’ today.
Thursday, May 24, Burapha - Stableford We were back at Burapha today where we again played the A and B nines. Although we got no rain it was still very wet and playing long. We got some very good scores from a small group and Kevin Blake (8) again came out the winner with an excellent thirty-eight points. His playing partner Russell Gilroy (17) gave Kevin a good run for his money and scored thirty-seven points to come second. Russell also had the only ‘2’ of the day so he actually walked away with the most money. Ted Morris (19) came third with a respectable thirty-five points.

Rees on target at Treasure Hill PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort Pattaya
Paddy Devereux, Jonathan Pratt, Stan Rees and Neil Harvey.
Tuesday, May 22, Mt. Shadow - Stableford On Tuesday we went to Mountain Shadow with a small group. Despite of the rain the course was in quite good condition, but not very much roll on the fairways. The greens were good but the bunkers were sub-par, although with all the rain is it difficult to keep them in good condition. Jonathan Pratt played solidly today and won with 36 stableford points while in second was Paddy Devereux with 32. The near pins went to Dave Smith and Paddy Devereux.
Thursday, May 24, Treasure Hill - Stableford Treasure Hill was our venue on Thursday and to avoid the road works we drove down the 7 until Laem Chabang junction and from there to the 331. It was a very good alternative and a fast way to go. We started with a clouded sky and a nice breeze but by midday the sun came and it became very hot. The course was in good condition and we had an enjoyable game. Stan Rees played consistent today and won with 38 points and four behind in second was Neil Harvey with 34. The near pin awards were claimed by Jonathan Pratt and Willem Lasonder.
Goldsworthy gets it right PSC Golf from the Pattaya Links Golf Society Monday, May 21, Pattana - Stableford 1st Russell Goldsworthy (4) 36pts 2nd Stan Stewart (18) 35pts 3rd Mashi Kaneta (15) 35pts 4th John Mason (24) 34pts Clear skies heralded the dawn of a new golfing week on Monday as the society visited Pattana to play a stableford round on the B and C nines. The course was in fine condition, though a little soft, but the greens on C are obviously next in line for repair and they were patchy and slower than the excellent front nine ones. Scores were more than respectable as John Mason beat Colin Service on countback for fourth place with 34 points. One point and one place better was Mashi Kaneta with 35 points and he was muscled out of second by Stan Stewart’s better back nine as the Scot enjoyed a rare podium place. The winner was Russell Goldsworthy, a fine golfer playing off four, who shot the day’s best gross of 76 in his winning round of 36 points. Consolation awards went to Jon Batty for his best front nine of 17 points and Steve Truelove took the award for the best back nine with 18 points.
Russell Goldsworthy. The absence of “Boss” Phil saw Len Jones present the prizes and his favourite Booby Bevy went to old friend Ron Matthews after a mediocre score on his first round this trip.
Wednesday, May 23, Pattavia - Stableford 1st Colin Service (20) 37pts 2nd Livio Marrone (5) 35pts 3rd Ron Matthews (12) 33pts 4th Maurice Roberts (13) 32pts Our second group out today had some stories to tell. One wayward shot crashed through a palm tree, hit another tree, bounced back to the fairway and landed in a cart and became stuck under the pedal. (unplayable?) Later, another shot went astray which had caddies and golfers diving for cover as the incoming ball hit another golf cart. Happy to report no injuries occurred.
Lloyd swoops in for the win
Colin Service (right) with Maurice Roberts. Pattavia Century is quickly becoming a go to course. At 1350 baht for green fee, caddy, cart for a golf course presented in such wonderful condition this is great value, and in line with the nearby neighbours. Here, as at the other courses in this area off the 331, the fairways are well grassed and should you get into the rough, you are not severely punished. The greens are always the talking point here. Today we found they had recently been cored and sanded, but pretty much settled now. The lightning speed we became scared of is now more sedate and absolutely playable. A field of 16 players played on a, once again, hot and steamy morning. Some relief came late in the round as the dark clouds began to assemble overhead and create a wisp of breeze.
Colin Service has the best of both worlds. Recently he got to wear the “wig” for recording the lowest score of the day. This time he came out on top of the heap to proudly don the Green Jacket with a score of 37 points. Livio Marrone, having his first game with us, popped into second place with 35 points off his low handicap of #5. Ron Matthews, like Colin, has his ups and downs but today he collected third place with 33 points. Maurice Roberts rounded off the podium finishers in fourth with 32 points. All four near pins were claimed by Gary Bolger (4), Livio Marrone (7), Maurice Roberts (13), and Nigel Harrison (17). Consolation prizes went to Tip Briney for a front nine of 19 points and Claude Grossi with 16 on the inward half.
PSC Golf from The Bunker Boys Monday, May 21, Greenwood – Stableford 1st Michael Brett (15) 33pts 2nd Neil Carter (13) 32pts 3rd Jimmy Carr (17) 32pts No golf report is complete without reference to the unseasonal weather we are having in recent weeks and today was no different. Despite thunder and lightning in the area and the ever-present threat of rain, we managed to complete our round dry. Another low season quick round was completed within three and a half hours. Today the scoring fell below our recent high standard. The winner on the day was Michael Brett with a very average score of thirty-three points, followed by thirtytwo from Neil Carter who beat Jimmy Carr into third on count-back. Near pins went to Jimmy Carr, Mike Lloyd, and Michael Brett. A good finish to the race for golfer of the month is brewing with at least four players in with a shot so it will be interesting to see who can maintain form and take the trophy.
Mike Lloyd.
Wednesday, May 23, Bangpra – Stableford 1st Mike Lloyd (18) 35pts 2nd Stuart Tinkler (14) 34pts 3rd Jimmy Carr (17) 34pts An unusual week for the Bunker Boys where six of our members traveled to Kabin Buri to compete in the Paul Hack four-ball team birthday golf challenge on Tuesday and Wednesday, while those that did not travel played the Bangpra course in our normal mid-week game. Mike Lloyd, on a flying visit from the UK, continued his good form to take first place with a tidy thirty-five
points. Stuart Tinkler on a slightly longer visit has also shown some really good form and took second place with thirty-four, while Jimmy Carr brought up the rear with thirty-four but beaten on count-back, however Jimmy made up for his loss by taking two near pins, with Les Cobban and Mike Lloyd taking the other two. In Kabin Buri, the Bunker Boys were represented by Geoff Parker, Neil Carter, Stuart Brown, and Michael Brett. Steve Durey and Les Hall partnered with two other golfers to make another team. The first day’s play was divided into front and back nines due to a massive thunderstorm mid-match which necessitated a delay of ninety minutes. The Bunker Boys achieved second placing on the back nine. Over the two days, the Bunker Boys were one of only a very few teams to go bogey-free over the thirtysix holes which included a 665-yard par five Kato hole and had eight birdies, so all in all a reasonable showing.
Friday, May 25, Eastern Star – Stableford 1st Les Cobban (8) 33pts 2nd Alan Sullivan (15) 30pts 3rd Geoff Parker (13) 30pts The last game of an unusual week was played at the very difficult Eastern Star course. This is a course that in the past has been in bad shape with very poor greens, but now the whole course is in very good condition. Even the clubhouse where the change rooms and showers were substandard are now being renovated so much better days ahead for this very challenging course. The difficulty of the course was reflected in the scoring where most struggled to reach thirty points. Les Cobban took first place with thirty-three points while three players finished on thirty points and had to be separated on count-back, with Alan Sullivan taking second and Geoff Parker third. Near pins went to Jimmy Carr, Neil Carter, and Michael Brett.

Rose wins Colonial and moves to No. 3 in the world Fort Worth, Texas (AP) — Justin Rose closed with a 6under 64 and finished at 20 under last Sunday at Colonial for a three-stroke victory over U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka in the Fort Worth Invitational. Rose won for the ninth time on the PGA Tour and became the fifth player with multiple victories this season. Rose also won the HSBC Champions in Shanghai in the fall. The 37-year-old from England earned US$1,278,000 and a plaid jacket for winning at Hogan’s Alley. He moves to No. 3 in the world and will have a mathematical chance to reach No. 1 this week at the Memorial. Koepka shot 63, but had started the day four strokes behind Rose in the final group. Emiliano Grillo shot 64 and

me. It was a really fun day to be part of,” Rose said. “Glad that my A-game turned up when I needed it, and I’m glad that I got my mindset right at the start of the day.” Na tapped in for a birdie at the 435-yard 18th hole to match his career-best score and become the seventh PGA Tour golfer with a 9-under round at Colonial — the first since Chad Campbell in the third round in 2004. Na also shot a 61 in the third round of the 2010 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. After an opening 62 that ended with a 92 foot chip-in from the rough when he ended his first round at No. 9, Na fell back in the field with a 73 in the second round and then shot even par Saturday. Jordan Spieth made a short birdie at No. 18 on Sunday for a closing 68 to finish 5 under and tied for 32nd at Colonial, where he had a win and two runner-up finishes the past three years.

Francesco Molinari completed a bogey-free weekend at the Wentworth Club in southern England and closed with a 4-under 68 Sunday to win the BMW PGA Championship by two shots over Rory McIlroy in a duel that never developed. McIlroy, who led by three strokes after 36 holes, entered the final round tied for the lead with Molinari. He didn’t make his first birdie until the eighth hole, and by then Molinari already was two shots ahead. McIlroy fell four shots behind through 10 holes, and only a birdiebirdie finish for a 70 made it look closer than it was. “I didn’t feel intimidated at all,” Molinari said of his head to head with the former world No. 1. “It’s just the last couple of holes, he’s basically thinking eagle, eagle. I’m thinking par, par, and that makes the whole difference. Molinari won for the fifth

The victory moved Molinari into one of the automatic qualifying spots for the Ryder Cup. The Italian has not played in the Ryder Cup since beating Tiger Woods in singles at Medinah during Europe’s record-tying comeback.
LPGA Tour Minjee Lee of Australia birdied the 18th hole to close with a 4-under 68 and win the LPGA Volvik Championship by one shot over I.K. Kim in Ann Arbor last Sunday.
Lee, who turned 22 on the final day of the championship, three-putted for a bogey on No. 17, dropping into a tie with Kim, who finished her round of 67 around the same time. Lee needed a birdie to win on reachable par-5 18th. Her second shot landed a few feet to the right of the green, and she calmly chipped to about 3 feet She made the putt to finish at 16-under 272 at Travis Pointe Country Club. It was Lee’s fourth career victory, and her first since 2016. “It was pretty solid today,” Lee said. “I didn’t make any bogeys. Just four birdies on the card. Yeah, that’s pretty good.” Kim shot a 32 on the back nine and birdied No. 18, but it wasn’t enough to force a playoff.

Monday, May 21, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford 1st Ian Brimble 40pts 2nd Lothar Egger 38pts 3rd JP Thomas 37pts Rain and lightning greeted our arrival to the Barcelona Valley complex, but things soon turned our way and we mounted the first tee under dry conditions. As we are all aware, the greens here have been an issue for the last 2 months and are not much better than last week to be honest. I guess there must be too
much of a good thing with these rains we are getting, but the greens are still borderline. The English Texan Ian Brimble was the standout today and that magic 40 brought Ian the gold. Ian plays off 10 these days and has always been a consistent player who keeps out of trouble. At least on the golf course! Lothar had a great round today and took a break from his beachside hammock to gather up a tidy 38 points on the card. The little lady is back and J.P. Thomas, playing off a 21 handicap, scored 37 points for third place. Hubby Peter
also got into the act with the Caddy Smile near pin to bring home the bacon.
Friday, May 25, Greenwood (white tees0 – Stableford T-1st Ian Brimble 39pts T-1st Gavin Brinkworth 39pts 3rd Billy Eyles 37pts This is not the Greenwood we usually play. It would seem that this lovely golf course has had more than their fair share of the localized rains and many areas should have been marked GUR. Greens were on the slow side but OK and it looked like they were cored a few weeks back.
Scoring was good despite the odd muddy fairway as our ‘lift, clean and place’ policy proved to be the correct option. Mr. Brimble ruled the day once again but allowed “Curly” Brinkworth to share the glory as both lads tied on 39. Billy Eyles in the Land of Smiles was a happy chappy and not only claimed third place, but the Caddy Smile near pin as well. Yes, Bill made that birdie putt which leads me to believe it must have been a short one. I.O.U. one little yellow poker chip which will get you a free beer from Scary Mary!

After an hour or so we were back on the course in hot but mostly dry conditions. With only 3 groups today we got away to a later than normal start on a course in great condition and even after the downpour it drained the water off in about 15 minutes. It did make the greens a little more receptive also. The scores were good with 37 points from Miss Sasicha taking third place while Capt Bob had a day in the sun, scoring 38 points but being beaten by Paul Greenaway who signed for 39. Watson’s century earns Chennai 3rd IPL title Mumbai, India (AP) — Shane Watson hit a belligerent unbeaten century as Chennai Super Kings won their third Indian Premier League title with a thumping eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final last Sunday. It was a perfect comeback for Chennai after a two-year ban due to corruption charges. Chennai, playing in their seventh IPL final, had previously won back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011. “Every win is special, so difficult to pick any one win,” Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said. The 36-year-old Watson smashed 117 off 57 balls as Chennai cruised to 181-2 in 18.3 overs against a team known for successfully defending totals.
Earlier, after being put into bat, captain Kane Williamson (47) missed out on his ninth half-century in this year’s IPL and Yusuf Pathan made an unbeaten 45 to lift Hyderabad’s total to 178-6. The 36-year-old Watson smartly orchestrated the run-chase by hitting 11 fours and eight sixes while keeping strike bowlers — Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0-17) and Rashid Khan (0-24) — wicketless. Together with Suresh Raina, who scored 32, Watson featured in a 117-run second wicket stand and took the game away from Hyderabad. Watson, who only scored his first run off his 11th delivery, took charge against seamer Sandeep Sharma (1-52) and Sidarth Kaul (0-43)

After Giro win, Froome quickly changes focus to Tour Andrew Dampf Rome (AP) — Now that Chris Froome has wrapped up the Giro d’Italia title, his focus will quickly switch to matching the record with a fifth Tour de France title — unless a doping case gets in the way. Froome is racing under the cloud of a potential ban after a urine sample he provided at the Spanish Vuelta in September showed a concentration of the asthma drug salbutamol that was twice the permitted level. Froome maintains he has long struggled with asthma. “I know I’ve done nothing wrong,” he said after lifting the Giro trophy last Sunday. “Obviously the next challenge for me has got to be the Tour de France,” Froome added. “I’m already thinking about it.” Still, it remains unclear when the International Cycling Union will rule on the case, which could result in a lengthy ban. “We’ve been focused on the race here and we’ll look at that in the weeks to come,” Team Sky director Dave Brailsford told The Associated Press. No rider has achieved the Giro-Tour double since Marco Pantani in 1998. “I’ve got to celebrate what an amazing victory this was but I’m definitely going to keep things tidy tonight thinking about recovering from this,” Froome said. “I really think it’s possible.” There are six weeks between
“After those first 10 balls, I was hoping to catch up ... once the ball stopped swinging, it got easier.” The Australian all-rounder raised his half-century off 33 balls with a six over midwicket off left-arm
spinner Shakib Al Hasan. He then smashed two fours and three successive sixes off Sandeep in the 13th over which went for 27 runs as Williamson ran out of ideas over how to stem the flow of runs.
Watson completed his second IPL century of the season off 51 balls with a single at cover off Rashid’s last over before smashing the Afghanistan legspinner for two consecutive boundaries. Hyderabad’s innings lost momentum once opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan (26) was clean bowled by Ravindra Jadeja in the ninth over with the total on 64. Williamson became only the fifth batsman in IPL history to score more than 700 runs in a season but he was outfoxed by legspinner Karn Sharma and was stumped by Dhoni in the 13th over. Williamson was the topscorer in the tournament with 735 runs at an impressive average of 52.50 and strike rate of 142.44. Yusuf and Brathwaite (21 not out), who hit three sixes in the last three overs, lifted Hyderabad’s total. “We thought it’ll be a competitive total, but the pitch did hold a bit,” Williamson said. “The boys are hurting at the moment, but we’ve fought hard.”

Switching off totally and relaxing totally is not the way to do it.” With one more Tour title, Froome will match the record held by Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. Lance Armstrong had won seven Tour titles but was stripped of them all for doping. With the Tour starting a week later than usual because of the soccer World Cup in Russia, Froome has the luxury of extra time to prepare. Sky sporting director Nicolas Portal said Froome would likely follow the Giro with
one week of rest, then a training camp at altitude followed by high-intensity training. The Tour runs July 7-29 and Froome plans to inspect some of the course before it starts. “We’ve got a few more (stages) to do, then obviously we want to work a little bit on the team time trial and we’re probably going to go through the cobbles again,” Brailsford said. “There’s a bit of work to be done.” Besides the usual mountain stages, this year’s Tour features a team time trial in Stage 3, a 35-kilometer route starting and ending in Cholet in western France. Stage 9 could also be tricky, with 15 treacherous cobblestone sections: the highest number since the 1980 Tour, with nearly 22 kilometers altogether. “He’s pretty confident about it, actually,” Brailsford said. “He’s happy on the dirt, he’s happy on a mountain bike and I think he’ll be happy on the cobbles.”
Paris (AP) — A year after stunning the tennis world by winning the French Open for her initial tour-level title, Jelena Ostapenko is again in rare company: a first-round loser as the defending champion at a Grand Slam tournament. Something even more unusual happened at Roland Garros, too last Sunday: Venus Williams was beaten in her opening match at a second consecutive major, the only time in her lengthy, distinguished career she’s had such early backto-back exits. All in all, it was quite a Day 1 at the only Grand Slam site that gets things started on a Sunday. There already is certain to be at least one first-time French Open finalist, because 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone and 2012 runnerup Sara Errani joined 2017 champ Ostapenko and 2002 runner-up Williams on the way out of the bottom half of the draw. Ostapenko’s high-risk game produced far fewer rewards than problems, with 48 unforced errors to only 22 winners as she bowed out to 67th-ranked Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine 7-5, 6-3 at Court Philippe Chatrier. Over at Court Suzanne Lenglen, things went similarly for Williams, a seven-time major champion, who had 21 more unforced errors than her opponent in a 6-4, 7-5 loss to 85th-ranked Wang Qiang of China. “Terrible day at the office
Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko returns the ball to Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova during their first round match of French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros Stadium in Paris, Sunday, May 27. (AP Photo/Christophe Ena) today for me. I mean, in general, I played maybe, like, 20 percent of what I can play. Made like 50 unforced errors and so many double-faults. Like, couldn’t serve today,” Ostapenko said. “I had this unbelievable pressure. I felt that I’m not myself.” She is only the second reigning women’s champion to exit in the first round of the French Open a year later — it happened to 2005 winner Anastasia Myskina, too — and only the sixth at any major tournament in the professional era. In 2017, ranked only 47th and 20 years old, Ostapenko became the first woman since 1979 to win her initial tourlevel trophy at a Grand Slam tournament. But the fifthseeded Latvian has had a rough road this season: Her record is just 12-12. Kozlova, meanwhile, is 24 and
arrived at Roland Garros with an even worse mark for 2018 — 4-6. She wasn’t even sure a couple of months ago whether she could participate in the French Open, because she damaged knee cartilage and resumed practicing for about 15 minutes at a time in April. “I didn’t expect anything from this match,” said Kozlova, who never had beaten someone ranked in the top 30 and was 1-6 in Grand Slam play before Sunday. She is now 3-0 against Ostapenko, however. “Any player who could hit, like, five shots back, I think, probably could beat me today, because I didn’t really play well,” said Ostapenko, who complained about limited preparation ahead of Roland Garros because of a leg injury suffered at the Italian Open this month.

Bale wonder-goal secures Madrid CL three-peat From page 36 A weeping Mohamed Salah was forced off in the first half with a shoulder injury that foiled Liverpool’s quest for a first continental success in 13 years and left the World Cup hopes of the “Egyptian King” in jeopardy. Tears also streamed down Loris Karius’ face after the Liverpool goalkeeper’s mistakes gifted two goals in the biggest match of his career. It might also be his last for Liverpool, who were denied a sixth European title by the aristocrats of the continent. When all they should have been thinking about is celebrating, both Bale and teammate Cristiano Ronaldo also cast doubts on their Madrid careers. But while Zinedine Zidane was adamant about the need to keep hold of five-time world player of the year Ronaldo, the Madrid coach seemed far less concerned about the future of the player whose two goals just delivered the club’s record-extending 13th European title. Bale only came on in the second half. The impact was explosive, scoring the bicycle kick in the 64th minute.
Five years into his Madrid c a r e e r, t h e 2 8 - y e a r- o l d Bale wants to be more than a super-sub. “I need to be playing week in, week out and that hasn’t happened this season for one reason or another,” Bale said after lifting the European Cup for a fourth time with Madrid. “I need to sit down in the summer and discuss it with my agent.” Will Bale get assurances over a place in the starting XI? “It might be complicated,” Zidane said. “But everybody looks out for themselves and takes care of their own thing, and I understand that.” Zidane doesn’t understand why Ronaldo raised fresh doubts over his commitment to the club. “He must stay,” Zidane said. “He will stay with us.” While Ronaldo became the first five-time winner in the post-1993 Champions League era, this was a comparatively muted performance in a final for a player who has contributed decisive goals in the three finals Madrid had contested in the previous four seasons. In the tunnel before kickoff there was a furtive glance

(AP Photo/Darko Vojinovic) across to Salah, who has also scored 44 goals this season. But the showdown between the world player of the year and a contender for his throne never materialized.
Blame Sergio Ramos for that, although the foul that ended Salah’s final was not the Madrid captain at his most cynical. Salah landed heavily on his left shoulder
in a twisting fall after 25 minutes. Ramos stepped away from the scene unpunished and Salah soon managed to step up after overcoming the initial pain. Not for long. Salah’s final was over after 30 minutes. Lying on his back, hands covering his face, Salah rose only to leave the field. An incredible debut season at Liverpool came to a crying end. “Of course it was a little shock to the team,” Klopp said. There were bigger shocks to come, from Liverpool’s goalkeeping blunders. After collecting a shot six minutes into the second half, Karius rolled the ball out too casually, neglecting the presence of Benzema who stuck out his right foot and dispatched the ball into an empty net. The immediate impact of Karius’ blunder was offset by Mane’s equalizer in the 55th. Dejan Lovren rose above Ramos and headed into the path of Mane, who turned the ball into the net. But then Bale, so determined to prove Zidane wrong, entered this meeting of the Premier League’s fourthplace team and Spain’s third-place finisher.
“I was very disappointed not to start the game,” he said. “I felt like I deserved it. The best I can do is to come on and make an impact.” That was achieved with the goal three minutes after replacing Isco and he netted again in the 83rd thanks to Karius’ second gaffe. The German allowed Bale’s shot to squirm through his hands into the net in the 83rd. “I just feel sorry for my team,” Karius said. “I know I let them down today.” It left Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp reeling from a sixth successive loss in a final, including a 2013 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich while Borussia Dortmund coach. For Zidane, victory in Ukraine puts the former France great in an elite field alongside Carlo Ancelotti and Bob Paisley as a threetime European Cup winner. But no one has achieved the feat faster, with each of his three seasons in charge ending by winning the game’s biggest club prize. “I’m still only starting out as a coach,” the 45-year-old Zidane said. “You’ve got to seize the moment and that’s what I’m doing.”
Aussie drivers first to win Monaco, Indianapolis on same day Julian Linden Sydney (AP) — Two drivers from Down Under — thousands of miles apart and even further from home — unexpectedly found themselves parked together atop the motor racing world after winning the two biggest races in the sport last Sunday. Just hours after Daniel Ricciardo won the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix around the narrow streets of Monte Carlo, his countryman Will Power won the Indianapolis 500, becoming the first Australian to win the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and sharing in a unique double. Only two other countries — Britain (1965, 1966) and Brazil (1989, 1993) — had provided the winning driver at Monaco and Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the same year, but Australia became the first nation to win both races on the same day. “A little reminder for the Australian press... please feel free to load front and back pages with motorsport related success stories from Indianapolis and Monte Carlo,” tweeted Mark Webber, who won at Monaco in 2010 and 2012.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo of Australia celebrates on the podium after winning the Formula One race, at the Monaco racetrack, in Monaco, Sunday, May 27. (AP Photo/Claude Paris) Webber need not have bothered with his cheeky prod as Australia’s media immediately went into overdrive, extolling the feats of Ricciardo and Power with a stream of television and radio broadcasts at a time when local football codes and cricket normally dominate the country’s sporting news cycle. As the only Australian driver in Formula One at present, Ricciardo is already a household name in his homeland, partly because of his previous successes but more so because of Australia’s
long and proud tradition in Formula One. Australia has already had two world champions, Jack Brabham (1959, 1960 and 1966) and Alan Jones (1980), and hosts the first Grand Prix of the season while Ricciardo, 28, had won seven races before his maiden victory at Monaco and finished third in the championship in 2014 and 2016. Winning at Monaco will elevate him to a whole new level of fame. Power, 37, has had even more success but received much less recognition because the Gold Coast Indy race that

His hometown of Toowoomba in Queensland state was only a two-hour drive from the Gold Coast track. Power was crowned the 2014 IndyCar Series champion and has won 34 races in his career but is better known in North America. He hopes that will change after the
biggest victory of his career. “To be the first Australian to win the Indy 500, that’s very special,” he said. “Maybe they might recognize me down there now. I don’t think many people
know who I am down there.” They may drive in different series’ but there are still plenty of similarities between Ricciardo and Power, as demonstrated by their euphoric, albeit unorthodox victory celebrations. With members of the Monaco royal family watching on, Riccciardo filled one of his sweaty race boots with champagne and drank it all up. Then later, still wearing his racing overalls, he dived head-first into a rooftop swimming pool at a team celebration. Not to be outdone, Power celebrated his long-awaited victory at The Brickyard by screaming expletives into his team radio. Then when he got to Victory Lane and, in keeping with the race’s tradition, was handed a bottle of milk to guzzle, he took a sip then poured the rest over his head and his crew. GMH looking to Thailand for assistance
Toyota joins the Cross-Over party My attention was brought to the new Toyota C-HR by two middle-aged gentlemen I met who waxed lyrical over their new purchases. About 30 minutes later I walked out of the Royal Cliff and was almost run over by a blue C-HR. I felt this had to be an omen. My very first impression was that the blue marauder was a Nissan Juke, but there was the King Ranch logo of Toyota on the tail. However, similarities in size and bulbous bodywork put the C-HR firmly in the crossover category. In many ways this has to be a ‘halo’ model for Toyota, better known as the manufacturer of motor cars with styling so bland you can lose your Toyota in the supermarket car park, amongst all the other Toyotas. However, the C-HR is anything but bland and makes the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Juke look old fashioned. Styling tricks, such as door handles

Toyota C-HR. in the C pillars certainly look avant-garde, even though Alfa Romeo had this about 30 years ago! The interior looks somewhat claustrophobic with the high window sills at the rear, and it is really a 4 seater (or cramped 5 unless your passengers are all Thai). Performance is satisfactory and could be considered the benchmark in this crossover class because it feels more like
a hatch than a scaled down SUV. I can see why the gentlemen raved about their C-HR’s. If Toyota have managed to combine their legendary reliability with a sporty dynamic they will have another winner. Well worth dropping by the Toyota showrooms. Finally, did the C-HR nomenclature ‘accidentally’ remind one of the Honda H-RV or does C-HR stand for “Car – Hurriedly Revised”?
B-Quik signs a lady B-Quik will set another milestone as we enter the first lady driver in TSS Super Car class where we will see Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup mentors Rahel Frey and Adderly Fong joining Daniel Bilski in Super Car GTM+. This year B-Quik is entering an Audi R8 LMS Ultra GT3 in Super Car GTM+, which was shared during the opening round, held in Sepang last month, by Daniel Bilski and Henk J. Kiks. It proved to be a solid debut for the pair in the new GT3 car and they enjoyed a trip to the podium. In Buriram, on 1-3 June, Henk will switch across to the new second entry into GTM+ and we’re pleased that Frey will be available to pair up with Bilski for the two 1-hour races. The Swiss racer knows the ‘R8 LMS GT3’ cars inside out
The Australian branch of Chevrolet (GMH) has identified the Thai-built Colorado pick-up as its “number one” model line with which to rebuild its business in Australia, following the company’s exit from local manufacturing last October and a poor start to the year that has seen GMH sales fall 22.5 percent. Despite the downturns across the board, the Thai-built Colorado still stands as Holden’s top-selling vehicle. GMH has a media’s advertising campaign to assist the Colorado sales in 2018. How the mighty has fallen, where once Holden was thought of as Australia’s own car, sales are now way behind its competitors. Sales figures to the end of April show that HiLux (16,230) and Ranger (13,664) remain the dominant forces in the category and that Triton (7870) has pulled well ahead of Colorado, which has only recorded 5407 new

on the previous two seasons which she spent as an Audi factory driver in DTM. Moving forward to the third round of the year in Bangsaen, Bilski will be partnered by another Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup mentor, Adderly Fong. His credentials speak for themselves and along with Bilski’s experience with both the car and the Bangsaen Street Circuit we’re confident this is a line-up that can get the job done. Lastly, B-Quik Racing will make an entry into the final round of the Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup 2018, which takes place at Sepang Circuit on 24-25 November. It will neatly bookend a year that saw Bilski and B-Quik Racing enter the opening round of the ‘one make’ series in Adelaide back in March.
The first next-generation model to receive Honda Sensing, possibly the Jazz light car, will hit local showrooms in 2020. However, there were some doubts as to whether “safety” was a saleable item these days. To investigate this, Honda Australia commissioned a survey of 1200 new-car buyers intending to purchase in the next two years, and it found that the local market required education on the importance and benefits of safety technologies such as the Honda Sensing suite. However, speaking to journalists in Melbourne last week, Honda Australia
director Stephen Collins revealed that the company was considering adding Honda Sensing to current-generation models, likely including the Civic small car and CR-V mid-size SUV. Honda Sensing consists of forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist and steering assist. While most new-car buyers showed a general understanding of airbags, anti-lock brakes and safe body structures, their knowledge of newer safety technologies was low. For
example, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring were identified by 12 percent of new-car buyers surveyed, while forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking were identified by 10 percent. However, once new-car buyers had the safety technology explained to them, their interest increased significantly. “With this knowledge, we plan to stagger the rollout of Honda Sensing and, at the same time, educate customers, ensuring they walk the journey with us and understand how Honda Sensing will complement their driving experience.”
What did we learn from Monaco? Well, we were soon reminded that Monaco is an anachronism and totally unsuitable for today’s F1 cars. It was a high speed procession led by a top driver in an ailing car. For the fact that Hamilton couldn’t pass Vettel who couldn’t pass Ricciardo you can also thank Pirelli who are now making tyres that have no relevance to motor cars as we know them. Kimi Raikkonen summed up the racing at Monaco very succinctly. “Today nothing really happened in the race; to be honest, it was a pretty boring one. We know that on this track, once everybody has stopped, whoever is in front dictates the speed and no matter if he goes four seconds slower on a lap, there’s no way to pass unless somebody makes a big mistake or runs out of tyres. We end up following each other through the whole race.” However, Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) was easily the standout driver of the entire weekend, being fastest in every pre-race session, and again in Qualifying and again in the race itself. Monaco reflects a driver’s ability as opposed to most other circuits which reflect engine power. Red Bull, running Renault engines are about 40 BHP down on the Mercedes or Ferrari engines. Ricciardo’s team mate Vercrashen showed none of his usual gung ho attitude and get out of my way, after crashing on the Saturday and missing the Qualifying
session, so had to start from the rear of the grid. He also had further sessions with the Red Bull team management which has lost its patience with the unruly youngster who may be quick, but doesn’t finish. All drivers suffered from degradation of the tyres, to the point that Vettel was unable to get the tyres warmed up after the Virtual Safety Car at the end of the race and dropped away from Ricciardo. All drivers consensus was that the race was boring. We spectators are in complete agreement. Results: 1 D Ricciardo Red Bull

Royal Cliff deVine and a fresh new face Dr. Iain Corness The Royal Cliff’s deVine Wine Club was host to an amazing young man from the Vanichwathana Company at their recent Culinary Excursion to Bordeaux and Bourgogne wine dinner. The fresh new face was Vanichwathana’s Wine Sommelier, 23-year-old Guillaume Celante, who worked with the Royal Cliff’s new Executive Chef Peter Held to produce matched courses and wines with a maturity well beyond his years. In his early twenties he had already worked in Paris and had become the Head Sommelier in a Michelin starred restaurant. A great CV at such an early stage in his career. The dinner began with a seared scallop on an avocado tartar with a mango dressing. This was a light beginning and for me I requested some ground black pepper to bring out the flavor of the avocado. This was paired with a Macon Villages Joseph Drouhin 2016, a light

sauces” of French cuisine as described by the famous Auguste Escoffier in the 19th Century. A little breather and a tamarind sherbet and we were ready for the main course. This was a roasted Angus beef tenderloin which literally did just fall apart with gentle pressure from a spoon. Chef Peter said this was achieved by slow cooking for six hours before presentation. This was paired with a Beaujolais Villages Joseph Drouhin 2014, a French Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée wine generally made of the Gamay grape which has a thin skin and is low in tannins, and perfectly enjoyable with the Angus beef. The next course was a real eye-opener being a blue cheese crème brulee served with a grilled pear and a balsamic shallot confit. Tantalizing the taste buds, but what wine would go with this? Guillaume selected a Moulin a Vente
Curried cauliflower veloute married to a Bourgogne Aligote Joseph Drouhin 2015. Joseph Drouhin 2013 (windmill in French), a red with plenty of body and an inspired partner for the blue cheese. There was a chocolate based dessert taken with the Chateau Le Thibaut 2014 dessert wine, which unlike many wines of this genre was 12.5 percent ABV, making for a dangerous tipple at the end of a wonderful evening. This was one of the better wine dinners for the deVine Wine Club and augurs well for forthcoming wine events

at the Royal Cliff. New dishes included the spectacular curried cauliflower veloute and the blue cheese crème brulee with grilled pear. The latter was paired with a Moulin A Vent Joseph Drouhin 2013, a wine robust enough to meet the blue cheese head on! On an historical note, French Wine producer Maison Joseph Drouhin is based in Burgundy and was founded in 1880. These days the estate owns vineyards in Chablis, the
Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, as well as in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. With many of the kitchen brigade and service personnel being younger professionals on the way up, there was an infectious optimism throughout the dinner, with many club members purchasing bottles of the wines, in my opinion bargain priced, at B. 1,800. Look for advance notice of the next deVine Wine dinner in the Pattaya Mail.

Garlic and Lime Potato Wedges Potato wedges are a very popular family dish. They are also good to serve with pre-dinner drinks, but this recipe adds just a little something more to the oven fried potato, with the addition of garlic and lime.
Ingredients Small potatoes, cut into wedges Garlic finely chopped Extra virgin olive oil Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper Lime Parmesan cheese, grated Coriander chopped as garnish
Serves 4-6 750 gm 1 clove 3 tbspns 1 1/3rd cup
Cooking method Preheat oven to 375, oven racks in the middle. In a medium bowl toss the potato wedges with the olive oil, the chopped garlic, a few big pinches of sea salt and a liberal sprinkling of black pepper. Arrange the potatoes cut side down on a baking sheet. Place in the oven for 30-35 minutes, tossing the potatoes with a metal spatula half way through. While the potatoes are baking, squeeze the lime and set the juice aside. When the potatoes are cooked through, remove them from the oven, taste, and adjust the seasoning. Add more salt and pepper to taste. Serve in a big shallow bowl, sprinkle the Parmesan and coriander over them and drizzle with the lime juice and present immediately to the guests (with forks)!

Pattaya Destroyers capture Gulf of Siam Classic
Pattaya Destroyers team members celebrate with the trophy after winning the Gulf of Siam Ice Hockey Classic at Harbor Mall in Pattaya, Saturday, May 19.
Geraldo LaPortage The Pattaya Destroyers won the second annual Gulf of Siam Ice Hockey Classic, staged over the weekend May 18-19 at The Rink, on the 5th floor of the Harbor Mall on Pattaya Klang Road.
The 4-on-4 competition proved to be a thrilling format for fans and players alike. Four teams competed in the tournament: the hometown Pattaya Destroyers; Jellonas, a team filled with predominately Finnish expats; a joint Phuket/Hong Kong
squad; and the Bangkok Flying Farangs featuring organizers Scott Whitcomb and Adrian Meyers from Jogsports. Pattaya stormed out of the gate to win their first two games on Friday by big scores of 10-2 over Jellonas and 15-2 over the Phuket-Hong
Bale wonder-goal secures Madrid CL three-peat Rob Harris Kiev, Ukraine (AP) — With his back to goal but eyes on the incoming cross, Gareth Bale connected with the ball while leaping in the air and sent a scissor-kick arcing into the top of the net. Fusing athleticism and technique, it was a mesmerizing sight to behold from the Real Madrid forward. Rarely has there been a finer goal in a European final and Bale followed it up with another to seal Madrid’s third successive Champions League title in a 3-1 victory over Liverpool last Saturday. Yet with blunders, injuries and intrigue unfolding throughout the night in Kiev’s Olympic

Kong Hitmen. It looked they would cruise to the championship, but late on Saturday afternoon they met a very determined Bangkok squad, who because of their roundrobin overtime loss to Jellonas had to beat Pattaya to advance to the final, and that they did so with a 5-2 triumph over the Destroyers. That result set up a rematch for the championship game between the Flying Farangs and the Pattaya squad. The Destroyers, led by captain Michael Nakvachara, regrouped in their dressing room determined to make up for their mistakes in the final round robin game. Before that rematch, the consolation final was held with the Phuket-Hong Kong Hitmen defeating Jellonas 10-6 to take third place overall. It was the Hitmen’s first victory in the tourney and Michael Azipnikov led the way with five goals while James Cox minded the twine for the Hitmen en route to victory. Tuomas Kylama had two goals for Jellonas who lost their starting goalie Jason Cotsmire to injury early in the tourney and had to borrow Pattaya’s back-up goalies. The championship game was up next and started much the same way as the final round-robin game with Bangkok taking an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Mike Wilson. But then the tide turned and Pattaya scored four unanswered goals, with John McHugh netting two markers and Sebastien Verdy and Aaron Vuorma adding singles. The final score was 4-1 to Pattaya and the tourney MVP was young Finnish goalie Samuel Pekkala who was outstanding in the final game, turning aside 20 of the 21 shots he faced, including four penalty attempts. In this tournament, if players drew penalties, instead of their team going shorthanded for two minutes, the opposing team was immediately awarded a penalty shot.
Samuel Pekkala was voted the tournament’s MVP.
