Nongprue police rewarded for arrest of truck thief arrest of Atid Jangmongkol, 34, in Bangkok. Atid was wanted on an arrest warrant issued by the Pattaya Provincial Court May 24 for allegedly stealing a Nissan pickup in April from Maneerat Phupanee, 24. The victim, a Udon Thani model working in Pattaya, filed a complaint with Nongprue police, who expended little effort to track down the suspect, despite having his photo and place of residence. Sudarat Phupanee a Thai spa owner living in the United States gave Thai police a 100,000 baht reward for finally catching a man who stole her niece’s pick-up truck three months earlier.

Fed up, she called her wealthy aunt Sudarat Phupanee in the U.S. on June 17, who posted the photo and details of the crime on the Facebook page of the deputy Tourist Police Bureau chief Pol Maj Gen Surachate Hakparn. Pol Maj Gen Surachate immediately called the Nongprue police chief and his boss in Chonburi on the carpet for dragging their feet. Lo and behold, four days later they found Atid at an apartment in Bangkok and the missing truck at his fam-

Hearing about the truck’s recovery, aunt Sudarat Phupanee bought a $3,000 ticket to fly from Boston to Bangkok where she appeared with the smiling cops at the news conference and presented the law enforcers with a 100,000 baht reward for catching the thief. Maneerat thanked the police for getting her pick-truck back. She explained she had asked Atid to fix it after the clutch went out and, instead, he absconded with the vehicle.

Banglamung officials are asking for a new pedestrian bridge over Sukhumvit Road near Srisuvit School.
Boonlua Chatree Banglamung officials have asked the Royal Thai Police to pick up the tab for a new pedestrian bridge over Sukhumvit Road near Srisuvit School. District Chief Naris Niramaiwong met with RTP social welfare chief Pol. Col. Samrerng Songsieng June 27, pointing out the overpass would also be located right by the Pattaya-area police barracks, which Samrerng oversees. Naris asked for the police
department’s support and funding for the bridge, which has been estimated to cost 6 million baht to construct. Sretsak Faklit, president of the Rong Poh Community, where the overpass would be located, said this was not the first time residents have requested that the government build a walkway over busy Sukhumvit Road, but previous requests only made it to the consideration stage. Naris said the previous request was approved, but disbursement of funds remained
pending due to lack of feedback from the school and police department. Samrerng said he had no problems with contributing to the project, but there remained an obstacle the school had to address: a gas station between the school and the planned bridge. Vehicles running in and out of the station posed a danger to students as well. Once the school devises a solution to traffic management, the project can be submitted to the Highway Department for final approval.
Banglamung School remembered an 18th century commoner who became Thailand’s most-heralded poet on National Thai Language Day. Also known as Sunthorn Phu Day, the occasion marks the June 26, 1786 birthday of the author of the epic “Phra Aphai Mani” in Bangkok. At area schools, the day was commemorated with poetry readings, stage plays and music. The events were matched in many schools by anti-drug rallies. At Banglamung School, Mattayom 6 students put on 10 stage performances, including “The Ramakien”, “The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen”, “The Old Scar Drama” and “Prasuton Manora”.
Banglamung School Mattayom 6 students put on stage performances to celebrate Sunthorn Phu Day. They also studied exhibits explaining the history of Sunthorn Phu Day and illustrating various literature and cultural works. Like his poems, Sunthorn’s life was a tale of sorrow and success. A child of divorced parents, he first lived with his father in Bangrum Temple, where his father was a monk and his mother a wet nurse to a princess. But the young man fell in love with Jun, a family member of King Rama I and he was arrested and jailed for the improper relationship. When the king died, he was pardoned and went to live with his father in Rayong where he wrote “Nirat Muang Grang,” one of his most famous poems, which was about his love for Jun. He then returned to the palace and married her, had a son and was named court
poet. Success, however, turned soured when Suthorn became an alcoholic, had an affair, got divorced, and was jailed after getting in a fight. However, he remained court poet even after Rama II’s death. But, during a poem reading by Rama III, the poet publicly corrected the monarch and was stripped of his title and banished from the palace. He briefly became a monk, then a merchant, but, after Rama IV’s daughter read the first parts of his unfinished serialized poem “Phra Aphai Mani,” he was invited to return to the palace to complete the poem, which was written in installments over 20 years and describes the romantic adventures of the title character throughout ancient Thailand. He died in 1855.

Parking, litter complaints persist at Banglamung Beach
Jomtien Beach facelift resumes July 27
Condominium owners near Banglamung Beach are complaining the clam diggers are causing noise and parking problems. And yes, it has to be those damn clam diggers trying to eke out a living from the sea and nothing to do with weekend visitors.
Warapun Jaikusol Condominium owners near Banglamung Beach are complaining the clam diggers are causing noise and parking problems. Deputy District Chief Litapope Penchan and Councilman Sretsak Faklit met June 23 with residents and business owners to discuss the ongoing problems with parking and litter. Phutiya Sakloh, general manager of the Paradise Condominium, said they, the Sea Breeze Community and Nadalay Condominium all were upset with the situation,
which Banglamung has responded to in recent weeks following rafts of complaints. He said parking on both sides of Banglamung Soi 16 has caused massive congestion on holidays and weekends and the entire area is covered in plastic, bottles and other waste. Sretsak had district enforcement officers erect barriers to prevent parking in prohibited areas and tell clam diggers to park farther from the beach and walk to find their bounty. The councilman said more Environment Department workers will be deployed to collect trash.
The visit by authorities came three weeks after the district first promised to dispatch officers to regulate parking and stop littering at the Pattaya-area beach popular with Thais. Deputy District Chief Narathip Fukruk had vowed on June 8 that “no littering” signs will be posted that threaten violators with fines. In addition, officers would be deployed on weekends and holidays to corral the chaos that has become parking at the beach. Either that promise was left unfulfilled or not enough officers were sent to placate residents.

Warapun Jaikusol Pattaya plans to build more bus stops on Beach and Second roads in another attempt to bring order to baht bus chaos. Public works chief Anuwat Thongkham said June 23 that Pattaya currently has more than 100 stops that are painted on the road, but most lack seating. As a result, people tend to just flag down a baht bus wherever they want. He said Pattaya wants its bus stops to match those in the west, so it will spend more money to install proper
stops with shelters and seats, first along Beach and Second roads. Thirty are planned for those two streets and 200
citywide, eventually. Anuwat said the city is seeking contractors with a decision expected this month.

Plans call for a new 1.5-meter-wide sidewalk and reconstruction of the road with new drainage tunnels laid underneath. Mokora said the objective
is to be as environmentally friendly as possible, promising that no trees would be cut period. However, he conceded, some trees may be moved if they obstruct the underground pipes. The final phase of the work from the rescue center to Pratamnak Soi 5 will begin in December and conclude in February, according to the schedule.

A Bang Saray man has been charged with killing his 80-year-old mother in an argument. An extremely drunk Sakarawan Sukmak, 40, was scooped up by Sattahip police at his family’s Moo 7 village home June 24. Inside officers found the body of Somwong Sukmak, 80, whose skull had been crushed by a heavy object. Sakarawan was too drunk to communicate initially with police and taken into custody for questioning. The mother’s body was sent to Sattahip Km. 10 Hospital for a forensic examination. Relatives called police to the house, saying mother and son had engaged in a heated argument the night before. But after hostilities ceased, the house became quiet and Sakarawan emerged the next day telling neighbors his mother was dead.
Thailand’s deputy national police chief led police from four Chonburi stations in a raid of a Khao Maikaew warehouse storing illegal electronic waste. Gen. Weerachai Songmetta joined officers from Pattaya, Huay Yai, Khao Maikaew and Bo Win in the June 26 operation against the Ratchanon Kong Khao facility off Highway 331 where steel dust and scrap was being loaded into trailers to be towed away. Owners Sudawadee Pleuhmak and Sitipan Srisomboon tried to avoid arrest by dropping a pile of documents and supposed permits on the officers, but none gave them permission to hold hazardous electronic waste.

Sattahip mum loses toddler in drug arrest Patcharapol Panrak A Sattahip woman was taken from her crying toddler in handcuffs after being caught selling crystal methamphetamines in Huay Yai. Sattahip District Chief and narcotics officers led the sting that arrested Wipaporn Phorung, 31, in front of a convenience store on Tedsaban 17 Road June 25. The mother of a four-yearold riding pillion on her motorbike was caught with 2.6 grams of ya ice. She was set up by Kakong Sanitpol, 35, who told police Wipaporn was her dealer.
They now face charges that could put them behind bars for two years and pay up to 200,000 baht in fines. Authorities seized four containers of waste from the property and discovered seven trucks waiting on Highway 331 with 14 more containers of the same waste destined for the warehouse. The drivers tried to
flee, but were rounded up by the police. Weerachai thanked nearby residents for reporting the illegal operation, as it could cause harm to both people and the environment. Authorities now are investigating the source of the scrap, tracing much of it back to Bangkok’s port and industrial district of Khlong Toei.

Boys, coach in stable health after 10 days lost in Thai cave Tassanee Vejpongsa Mae Sai, Thailand (AP) The 12 boys and soccer coach found in a partially flooded cave in northern Thailand after 10 days are mostly in stable medical condition and have received high-protein liquid food, officials said Tuesday, though, at the time of Pattaya Mail going to press, it was not known when they would be able to go home. Video released early Tuesday by the Thai navy showed the boys in their soccer uniforms sitting on a dry area inside the cave above the water as a spotlight, apparently from a rescuer, illuminated their faces. The boys were found late Monday night during a desperate search that drew international help and captivated the nation. Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said the health of the boys and coach were checked using a field assessment in which red is critical condition, yellow is serious and green is stable. “We found that most of the boys are in green condition,” he said. “Maybe some of the boys have injuries or light injuries and would be categorized as yellow condition. But no one is in red condition.” When the group will be able to leave the cave isn’t known due to flooding and other factors that could make their extraction dangerous. Experts have said it could be safer to simply supply them where they are for now. Thailand’s rainy season typically lasts through October.
Chiang Rai Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said Tuesday morning that a navy SEAL team will make the final call on the evacuation method. He said one method being considered is for the group to be coached to swim using special breathing masks. He said other efforts will continue, such as draining water from the cave and exploring the mountainside for shafts and other entrances to the caverns below.
Rescue divers had spent much of Monday making preparations for a final push to locate the lost soccer players, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach. Flooding trapped them after they entered the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai on June 23. might have taken shelter. In the 5-minute navy video, the boys are quiet as they sit on their haunches, legs bent in front of them. “You are very strong,” one of the rescuers says in English. Someone asks what day it is, and the rescuer responds, “Monday. Monday. You have been here - 10 days.” One boy, noticing the camera and hearing unfamiliar
words, says in Thai, “Oh, they want to take a picture; tell him we’re hungry. I haven’t had anything to eat.” Then the boy breaks into simple English, saying, “Eat, eat, eat,” to which another voice responds in Thai that he already told that to the rescuer. Narongsak said Tuesday that the missing were given high-protein liquid food, painkillers and antibiotics. He said doctors had advised giving the medicine as a preventative measure. Anmar Mirza, a leading American cave rescue expert, said many challenges remain for the rescuers. He said the primary decision is whether to try to evacuate the boys and their coach or to supply them in place. “Supplying them on site may face challenges depending on how difficult the dives are,” Mirza, coordinator of the U.S. National Cave Rescue Commission, said in an email. “Trying to take non-divers through a cave is one of the most dangerous situations
possible, even if the dives are relatively easy. That also begets the question: If the dives are difficult then supply will be difficult, but the risk of trying to dive them out is also exponentially greater.” Narongsak said officials had met and agreed on the need to “ensure 100 percent safety for the boys when we bring them out.” “We worked so hard to find them and we will not lose them,” he said. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha thanked the international experts and rescuers who helped locate the missing for their “tremendous efforts.” “The Royal Thai Government and the Thai people are grateful for this support and cooperation, and we all wish the team a safe and speedy recovery,” Prayuth’s office said in a statement. The rescuers had been stymied repeatedly by rising water that forced divers to withdraw for safety reasons. When water levels fell Sunday, the
divers went forward with a more methodical approach, deploying a rope line and extra oxygen supplies along the way. Experts in cave rescues from around the world had gathered at the site. An official Australian group has followed a U.S. military team, British cave experts, Chinese lifesaving responders and several other volunteer groups from various countries. “These are challenging conditions and there’s a lot of consideration for safety as well as, the environment outside is contributing to the environment inside,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Jessica Tait, part of a 30-member U.S. military team assisting in the search, referring to the rain that has been flooding the cave. “So I’d say, yeah, it’s an accurate statement that it’s challenging.” Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said Tuesday heavy rains forecast for the coming days could worsen floods, forcing authorities to speed up their extraction. The boys may need to swim out using diving equipment ahead of the bad weather. He said they plan to bring the boys out via the same complicated route through which their rescuers entered. While efforts are to pump out the floodwaters continue, Anupong said it’s clear some area cannot be drained and in order to get out the boys may need to use diving gear while being guided by two professional divers each. He conceded that if something went awry, it could be “life-threatening.”
AP Explains: Getting soccer players out of Thai cave, safely Grant Peck Bangkok (AP) - Now that the missing Thai soccer team has been found, the next step is determining how to get the boys and coach safely out of the partly flooded cave in northern Thailand. Here’s a look at the options and why extracting the 12 boys and man could take some time:
The Cave Is Huge Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai province
stretches under a mountainside for up to 10 kilometers (6 miles), much of it a string of narrow passageways that lead to wide chambers and then back to narrow passageways. The rocky and muddy ground makes several changes in elevation along the way. The British Cave Rescue Council, which has members taking part in the operation, estimates the boys are around 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) into the cave and somewhere between 800 meters (half a mile) to 1
kilometer (0.6 miles) below the surface. Other estimates put the boys as far as 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) into the cave.
The Cave Is Flooded Finding the boys took more than nine days, partly because of how difficult it is to move around the cave. The cave floods during Thailand’s rainy season and even elite Thai navy SEAL divers were finding it difficult to move through the muddy waters, currents and tight passageways.

Safety First Thai authorities say they are committed to “100 percent safety” when they consider how to extract the boys, who don’t appear to be in urgent need of medical evacuation. Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said: “We worked so hard to find them and we will not lose them.” According to Anmar Mirza, national coordinator of the National Cave Rescue Commission in the U.S. and editor of the book Manual of U.S. Cave Rescue Technique, the main decision is now whether to try to evacuate the boys or to supply them in place.
Supplying Them in Place This is possibly the safest option. It would involve bringing food and other supplies to the boys and waiting for water levels to drop, naturally or by pumping out water, or until rescuers can find or create another exit. This could take anywhere from days to weeks to even months as the rainy season typically lasts through October. The Thai navy is already
doing this short-term, sending teams with high-protein liquid food to feed the boys, keep them company and explore the cave infrastructure where they are to ensure it is safe. The navy said medics will be sent to help and improve conditions in the cave.
The Danger of Staying Put More monsoon rains are on the way. After a break in the weather in recent days, the Thai Meteorological Department forecast for Chiang Rai calls for light rain through Friday followed by heavy rain starting Saturday and continuing through July 10. Such storms could raise water levels in the cave again and complicate the supply missions or any potential extrication, if one was needed.
Creating Another Entrance Along with the search efforts inside the cave, rescuers have searched on the mountainside for possible ways into the caverns below. Authorities said those efforts will continue. Backhoes and drilling equipment were sent to the mountain, but
creating a shaft large enough to extract the boys would be extremely complicated and could take a long time. The British Cave Rescue Council said the boys are “located in a relatively small space and this would make any potential drilling attempt as a means of rescue very difficult.”
Diving Them Out Diving would be the fastest, but arguably most dangerous, extraction method. Mirza said, “Trying to take non-divers through cave is one of the most dangerous situations possible, even if the dives are relatively easy.” By all accounts, the dives into the cave have been a challenge. Experts in caving and diving needed days to reach the boys. Getting the boys out could go faster due to the installation of dive lines, extra oxygen tanks left along the way and glow sticks lighting the path. Still the British Cave Rescue Council said: “Any attempt to dive the boys and their coach out will not be taken lightly because there are significant technical challenges and risks to consider.”

He also reaffirmed that the insurgency Down South does not have any bearing on the rest of Thailand, or the Eastern Seaboard in particular. He discussed some of the recent protests, leading to the coup under our present Prime Minister. If the AFG
Tony Harman. members didn’t know already, Tony covered the fact that the protestors did not go hungry and all received a daily allowance. The protests were naturally very well attended, no free offer is ever undersubscribed. After the multiple postponed election has been held (don’t hold your breath) Tony was led into stating that, “The next 12 months will be
pretty interesting” but felt that there would be limited security impact. Areas of concern included organized crime, loan sharking, which can affect the workforce, procurement fraud (which seems endemic at present) and bribery. He stressed that transparency is important, especially in the areas of procurement and stock control. (The opposite has seen a glut of “unusually rich” civil servants in the news recently.) The Q & A session was very lively with speakers showing that there are real problems out there and needing intelligent review. Following on from the seminar, the AFG members and friends moved to another area in Mövenpick where a lovely lady kept topping up my wine glass and it wasn’t fruit wine either.
Clothes stores checked for ‘inappropriate’ yellow shirts Boonlua Chatree Banglamung authorities have begun inspecting clothing shops to ensure that yellow shirts sold this month for HM the King’s birthday meet proper standards. The government has encouraged both Thais and tourists to wear yellow this month in honor of the King’s July 28 birthday. But those shirts must only have approved logos and slogans. District Chief Naris Niramaiwong led a June 25 check of clothes stores, looking for shirts that, for example, carried replicas of the King’s signature, which is prohibited, or images that violate a copyright. Unauthorized symbols or letters are disrespectful and

China’s manufacturing weakens in June amid trade tensions Beijing (AP) - China’s manufacturing activity decelerated in June as U.S.-Chinese trade tensions added to concern the economy is cooling due to tighter government controls on lending, a survey showed Saturday. The National Statistics Bureau’s purchasing managers’ index declined to 51.5 from May’s 51.9 on a 100-point scale on which numbers above 50 show an acceleration.
China faces the threat of U.S. tariff hikes in a dispute over trade and technology but economic indicators already are turning down after Beijing tightened lending controls to rein in a rise in debt. Exports have shrunk as a share of China’s economy and contribute less than 1 percent of annual growth but still support millions of manufacturing jobs. Indicators of exports, new
orders and manufacturing all weakened in June, the NBS survey showed. It is conducted in partnership with an industry group, the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing. The International Monetary Fund forecasts this year’s Chinese economic growth to decline from last year’s 6.9 percent to a still-robust 6.6 percent. Longer-term, the IMF expects growth to decline to 5.5 percent by 2023.

The conference was held near Thailand’s Ban Nam Pu Ron and Myanmar’s Htee Kee border checkpoints. It was aimed at increasing trade activity in border areas by promoting border development and cooperation between Thailand and Myanmar. In attendance were Dr. Lei Maw, Chief Minister of Myanmar ’s Taninthargyi Region, as well as representatives from public and private organizations in Kanchanaburi province. Small meetings on publicprivate cooperation, business matching and agreementsigning ceremonies were also being held on the sidelines of the event. Dr. Lei Maw said Myanmar’s economy is experiencing rapid growth and, therefore, the country must import construction materials, household commodities and industrial chemicals to accommodate rising domestic demand.

12 Rules for 12 months
Last week we went through 10 tips for amateur photographers. This week I will add to the professionals’ tips by suggesting 12 rules for 12 months. These came from a similar article I wrote 20 years ago, and all of them are still very important if you want to continue to improve. In no particular order, by following these “rules” you will improve your picture taking. 1. Shoot more 2. Walk closer 3. Use the focus lock 4. Buy a tripod 5. Have more than one memory stick 6. Make enlargements of your better prints 7. Use different formats 8. Use a polarizing filter 9. Carry your camera with you
10. Use the flash during the day 11. Develop a project 12. Change the batteries Let’s expand on these somewhat. Shooting more images - photography, like any sport, recreation or pursuit is something where the more you do it and practice it, the better you get. That just means shooting more and improve by doing. Capturing an image is really the cheapest part of photography, especially when you compare it to the purchase price of a half decent camera. Shoot more! The one major fault in most amateur photographs is taking the shot from too far away. The “hero” becomes so small in the final image that is it no longer the hero. Make the subject the “hero” and walk in several meters closer to make the hero fill the frame. Don’t be lazy and use the zoom instead of walking closer. With modern auto-focus cameras the most obvious focussing problem is where the subject is off-center. The magic electronic eye doesn’t
Dear Hillary, One of my colleagues at work keeps on suggesting I go out with him to go bar hopping one night. When I asked which bars he intended to visit, he was very vague and was trying to dodge the issue. What do you think he is trying to do? He would be around 40 years old with a Thai wife. I am 27 and unmarried. Perplexed Dear Perplexed, Why are you trying to “read” something into a situation before it has made itself evident? You are in charge of your own destiny and if you don’t like the bar, then you move on. If you think he is trying to seduce you, then again you are in charge of the situation. Nobody is going to throw you flat on your back on the bar counter, are they? Suggest to him it would be a great idea to go out and to bring his Thai wife with him. His next move will show his hand, I am quite sure. Unless his wife wants to seduce you! Dear Hillary, I am about to try and learn the Thai language (for the third time) and I have been getting some conflicting advice and am hopeful that you, dear Hillary, can put me on the right path. Some of my friends say I should just learn how to speak conversational Thai and forget about reading it, while others I know who speak Thai fluently say I should learn to read and write the language at the same time. I’m confused enough as it is, what do you think? Confused Dear Confused, No need to worry. Look at it this way, do Thai children learn to read and write first or learn to speak the language first? Do American kids learn to read and write before they speak English? Of course they don’t. Children learn
know this and focuses on the center being background, leaving your closeup subject soft and blurry. Focus on the subject and keep your finger depressed on the focus lock while arranging the shot. Tripods we covered recently, but one of these will expand your picture taking no end. Get a good quality sturdy tripod, not one of the cheap aluminium ones. Memory sticks/cards, always have one in the camera and another safely in the camera bag. Trying to delete images on the fly is not the way to winning pictures. Another thing to keep your interest going and give you pride in your work is to make some enlargements of your better photos. At around 100 baht for most places, this is very cheap and enlargements do make good presents at Xmas time too. We all get lazy and it is too easy to end up just taking every picture in the horizontal (landscape) format. Always take two shots of each subject - one in the horizontal
format and the other in the vertical. You can get some surprising results that way. Don’t be lazy - do it every time! With color photography, which covers about 99.99 percent of most people’s pictures these days, the one major factor to give your skies and
like parrots (but eat like pigs). Sure, it helps to recognize some words in Thai, but take the easy way and you should start like any Thai child and speak before you write. Dear Hillary, I met a wonderful girl in a new bar the other night. Beautiful nature, beautiful skin, lovely smile and figure, in fact I just fell for her. She comes from Udom, and that’s about all I managed to find out after about four hours and several “lady drinks”. The biggest problem was that she doesn’t speak any English, so I was trying to talk to her through a friend of hers who also works in the bar and who didn’t speak much English either. By the end of the night I was pretty drunk and did lend her 2000 baht. What should I do? Should I keep going, or should I give up now before I get in too deep? Nelson Dear Nelson, You’ve really got the telescope in the blind eye, haven’t you petal. You spent four hours (and several lady drinks) getting to know this lady and she can’t speak your lingo. What means of communication did you use? Braille? One thing’s for sure, young man, she certainly could talk her way into your wallet. Her fingers did the walking! Or was that “talking”? Kiss your two grand goodbye and stick to the old bar. It sounds safer. Dear Hillary, How do I stop my husband tipping? I know it probably sounds mean, but he is always leaving 20 baht here, 50 baht there and it all mounts up. We have retired here from the UK and live off his pension which is not all that much every
seas and scenery some color oomph is the use of a polarizing filter. Get one and use it. You will always miss some “classic” shots and regret it later, but you certainly will never get them if you don’t have a camera with you. With so many incredible
sights around Pattaya you should be photographically ready at all times! To give your daytime shots some extra sparkle, use “fillin” flash. Most new cameras have a little setting that will do this automatically for you - even with point and shooters. If you haven’t, then spend some time learning how to do it. It’s worth it when you see the results you get. To give yourself the impetus to go out and take photos, develop a project and spend your leisure time building up the images. It can be flowers or fashion, cars or canaries, but fix on something and follow it through. It’s worth it, just for the fact that it makes you become an “enquiring” photographer. Finally, every year at the end of December, give the camera a birthday by buying it some new batteries. You won’t have a problem damaging the sensitive innards with neglected battery acid and the camera’s light metering system will work correctly every time. Cheap insurance.
month. When I chide him about it he just says that everyone has to live or words to that effect. How do I show him that the amounts he leaves are excessive? Mona Dear Mona,
You certainly are a little moaner aren’t you my Petal. Leaving a tip for people in the hospitality industry is how many of these people survive because their wages can be amazingly low. There are not strong unions as there are in your country, so there is no guarantee of minimum salaries, even though there may be legislation to that effect. Provided you are living within your means, and your husband is tipping within those means, let him feel good about it and let the recipients enjoy their added “extras”. They’ll need it more than you do, my Purple Petunia. Dear Hillary, I met this attractive lady at a concert the other evening. She was well dressed (not provocative) and spoke good English. We chatted for a while and I felt we got along rather well. I asked if she had a business card and she gave me one. When I got back to my condo I looked at it and it turns out she works for a massage agency. This is my problem. How could I introduce her to my mother, for example? Have I been taken in, or is she just a slippery customer? Gerald Dear Gerald, A gal’s gotta do what a gal’s gotta do in this world. Look at me, replying to drivel like yours every week! Let your Mum find her own massage parlor.

Sticks and stones may break my bones My son fell over at school and when I went to pick him up he was holding his right wrist tightly and said, “Daddy it is the biggest pain I’ve ever had.” With that simple presentation, I knew he had a fracture of his wrist. A visit to my hospital’s X-Ray department confirmed my suspicion regarding a ‘greenstick fracture’ and so he was put in plaster to immobilize the bone and its fracture. Broken arms are always in vogue, with two of my friends fracturing theirs, as well as number 1 son. One fell off his bicycle, while pedaling to get fit, and the other managed to get centerpunched by another motorcycle while riding his to work. Neither has relished the experience, and all three have suffered pain. Now whilst all three suffered breaks, or fractures as we medicos call them, there are various degrees and types you can end up with. Son and friend number one were the luckiest, suffering “hairline” fractures of the Radius (the larger of the two bones in the forearm). This should be thought of as more of a “crack” in the outer surface of the bone, just like you can pick up a drinking glass and see that it is cracked, but not broken in half. However, it is still a painful condition, and the extreme bruising that came out on the arm over the following ten days showed the amount of trauma involved in stepping ungracefully off a bicycle!
The treatment for this type of fracture is fairly conservative. A splint for a couple of weeks to rest the arm, some anti-inflammatories to reduce the swelling and some simple pain killers. After three weeks, this type of fracture will be satisfactorily healed, though it does take around six weeks for total healing. Friend number two was not so lucky. Picking himself up off the road he noticed that there was the end of a piece of bone sticking out through the skin on his forearm, and as he so aptly said, “It’s a scary feeling seeing your own bones!” Now this is a real fracture, with complete division of the bone, and when it sticks through the skin we called it a “compound” fracture. Raw jagged ends certainly “compound” the problem! Treatment for one of these is more than a simple case of immobilization. What is called an Open Reduction under general anesthesia is required. In other words, you are put to sleep, so that the orthopedic surgeon can get in and close the fracture. In this case, as with most of these, it is also necessary to insert a metal plate into the arm, which is screwed firmly to the two halves of the bone. This internal fixation holds the bone ends together and a cast over the outside of the arm then completes the physical treatment side of it. Of course, after surgery it is necessary to have
California moves to declare coffee safe from cancer risk Brian Melley Los Angeles (AP) - California officials bucked a recent court ruling Friday and offered reassurance to concerned coffee drinkers that their fix won’t give them cancer. The unprecedented action by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment to propose a regulation to essentially clear coffee of the stigma that it could pose a toxic risk followed a review of more than 1,000 studies published this week by the World Health Organization that found inadequate evidence that coffee causes cancer. The state agency implemented a law passed by voters in 1986 that requires warnings of chemicals known to cause cancer and birth defects. One of those chemicals is acrylamide, which is found in many things and is a byproduct of coffee roasting and brewing present in every cup of joe. If the regulation is adopted, it would be a huge win for the coffee industry which faces potentially massive civil penalties after recently losing an 8-year-old lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court that could require scary warnings on all coffee packaging sold in California. Judge Elihu Berle found that Starbucks and other coffee roasters and retailers had failed to show that

many years, but concerns have eased recently about possible dangers, with some studies finding health benefits. Big Coffee didn’t deny that acrylamide was found in the coffee, but they argued it was only found at low levels and was outweighed by other benefits such as antioxidants that reduce cancer risk. The state agency’s action comes about a week after bipartisan bills were introduced in both houses of Congress to require science-based criteria for labels on food and other products. One of the sponsors, Rep. Kurt Schrader, D-Oregon, alluded to the California coffee lawsuit as an example of misleading warnings. “When we have mandatory cancer warnings on a cup of coffee, something has gone seriously wrong with the process,” Schrader said in a news release. “We now have so many warnings unrelated to the actual health risk posed to consumers, that most people just ignore them.” The lawsuit against Starbucks and 90 companies was brought by the tiny nonprofit under a law that allows private citizens, advocacy groups and attorneys to sue on behalf of the state and collect a portion of civil penalties for failure to provide warnings. The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, better known as Proposition 65, requires warning labels for about 900 chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects. The law has been credited with reducing cancer-causing chemicals, but it has been criticized for leading to quick settlement shakedowns and vague warnings that are often ignored.
some fairly potent pain killers, and generally we would prescribe some antibiotics as well. Around three weeks, the cast can be thrown away, and after six weeks, the patient can usually use the afflicted limb quite well. With many of these, we also go back in after one to two years and remove the plate and screws. Sometimes, we actually fix the two halves of bone by screwing an external plate through the skin and into the bone itself. This is called “external” fixation and you don’t need a secondary operation to remove the plate - but it does mean you put up with something that looks like scaffolding around your broken limb. So what do you do when presented with something that might be a fracture? The simplest and best first aid you can do is to immobilize the fracture by splinting the limb involved. Wrap a magazine around the arm and hold in place with a crepe bandage. With compound fractures, a sterile pad over the fracture and a gently applied crepe bandage over that and a trip to hospital. The elderly should try not to fall as old bones are not as strong as young ones, and a fracture of the neck of femur (thigh bone) may be dangerous.
FDA clears 1st generic film strip of addiction drug Suboxone Linda A. Johnson, AP U.S. regulators have approved the first generic version of an under-the-tongue film for treating opioid addiction. The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a generic version of Suboxone, a film strip that dissolves under the tongue. Used daily, it reduces withdrawal symptoms, cravings for opioids and the high from abusing them. The medication combines buprenorphine and naloxone.
It’s used along with counseling and other behavioral therapy. The generic version will be sold by partners Mylan N.V. and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories SA. They didn’t immediately respond to questions about when their version will be available or what it will cost. Brand-name Suboxone film costs about $200 a month without insurance. The FDA said the approval was aimed at making the treatment available to more people.

Beer may lack fizz in Europe amid carbon dioxide shortage London (AP) - No beer at this time of year? A British trade group says there’s a shortage of carbon dioxide in Northern Europe, sparking fears that drinks may lack fizz just as thirsty soccer fans fill pubs for the World Cup. Gavin Partington, director-general of the British Soft Drinks Association, says the shortage is due to the closure of several production sites for various reasons, including seasonal maintenance. But industry publication Gasworld says the situation is worse this year because normal maintenance has coincided with technical issues at chemical plants that also produce carbon dioxide. That shortage comes just as the World Cup is getting underway in Russia, driving up demand for beer and soft drinks. The British Beer and Pub Association predicts England fans will drink an extra 14 million pints during the group stages of the tournament, which last about two weeks. “We will continue to monitor the situation carefully,” said Brigid Simmonds, the group’s chief executive. “However, given the time of year and the World Cup, this situation has arisen at an unfortunate time for the brewing industry.” The shortage could also affect meat producers, who may have trouble preserving some fresh foods.
In India, rats have a $19,000 meal Gauhati, India (AP) - It was a cash machine heist with a difference: The attackers were hungry rodents. At least one rat slipped through a hole in the back of an ATM in northeastern India and started eating. By the time it was finished, police say more than $19,000 in bills were shredded. When technicians arrived June 11 to fix a broken State Bank of India cash machine in the town of Tinsukia they found a dead rat inside it and Indian currency notes worth nearly 1.3 million rupees, or a little over $19,000, chewed to shreds. The rat had entered the ATM through a small hole for cables, police superintendent Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta said Friday. The notes were in 500-rupee and 2,000-rupee denominations. The ATM had been broken since May 20, officials said. A State Bank of India official said the cash machine was overseen by another company. “We are surprised at what has happened. An investigation has been ordered,” said the official, Bimal Debroy.

Slow farm tractor flees police, setting off low-speed chase Brewer, Maine (AP) - Police say a slow-moving farm tractor that fled a traffic stop in Maine led police on a nearly 3mile, low speed chase. Police Sgt. Nelson Feero Jr. says a Brewer police officer pulled over the tractor Tuesday morning after he saw it knock over a series of traffic cones in a construction zone. The Bangor Daily News reports the 41year-old driver got back in the tractor during the stop and “took off” - leading police officers on a slow 3-mile chase toward Eddington. The farm tractor was hauling a large piece of machinery during the low-speed chase. Police say the driver is charged with failing to stop for a police officer and driving to endanger.
Spraying snake with gas leads to house blaze in Finland Helsinki (AP) - An improvised method of getting rid of a snake in a garden by spraying it with gasoline kicked off a chain reaction that ended up with a house on fire in southern Finland. Finnish public broadcaster YLE reported Tuesday that some of the flammable liquid spread by an ill-fated homeowner in Siuntio, west of Helsinki, landed on a nearby lawnmower that was warm enough to ignite a fire. Flames spread quickly Monday in extremely dry conditions to the wooden house, reaching the exterior wall and attic. The broadcaster said firefighters extinguished the blaze but damages may reach 15,000 euros ($17,000), although the home’s interior was not affected. YLE didn’t identify the reptile, but venomous adders, smooth snakes and grass snakes are the most common types of snakes in Finland.

Stephen Hawking’s ashes buried in Westminster Abbey Jill Lawless London (AP) - The ashes of Stephen Hawking were buried last month in a corner of Westminster Abbey that honors some of Britain’s greatest scientists, between the graves of Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton. More than 1,000 people attended a service of thanksgiving June 15 in the ancient abbey for the physicist, who died in March at age 76 after decades of living with motor neuron disease. When he was diagnosed, aged 22, he was given only a few years to live. Hawking conducted groundbreaking research into black holes and the origins of the universe, and gained global fame as a popularizer and communicator of science. His book “A Brief History of Time” sold 9 million copies - even if many readers didn’t finish it - and he appeared on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” ‘’The Big Bang Theory” and “The Simpsons.”
“His name will live in the annals of science,” Astronomer Royal Martin Rees told the memorial service. “Nobody else since Einstein has done more to deepen our understanding of space and time. “Millions have had their horizons widened by his books and lectures, and even more worldwide have been inspired by a unique example of achievement against all the odds,” Rees said. Hawking’s first wife Jane and daughter Lucy were among an eclectic crowd that included scientists and schoolchildren; politicians including U.K. Culture Secretary Matt Hancock and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn; Chic guitarist Nile Rogers; actress Lily Cole; comedian David Walliams; and talk-show host Piers Morgan. Guests also included 1,000 members of the public selected by ballot from 25,000 applicants. A private funeral service was held in March in Cambridge, where Hawking lived and worked for decades.

The 900-year-old abbey is the resting place of a pantheon of British historical figures, including kings and queens, political leaders and writers including Geoffrey Chaucer and Charles Dickens. Hawking was interred in the abbey’s Scientists’ Corner, beneath a stone inscribed: “Here lies what was mortal of Stephen Hawking” - an English translation of the Latin words on the nearby grave of Newton, the 17thcentury scientist who discovered the laws of gravity. The stone is also inscribed with one of Hawking’s equations describing the entropy of a black hole. After the service, Hawking’s words, set to music by Greek composer Vangelis, were being beamed into space from a European Space Agency satellite dish in Spain. Hawking’s daughter, Lucy, said the music would be aimed at “the nearest black hole, 1A 062000,” more than 3,000 light years from Earth.
NASA’s record-breaking spacewoman retires as astronaut Marcia Dunn Cape Canaveral, Fla. (AP) - NASA’s record-breaking astronaut, Peggy Whitson, retired June 15 less than a year after returning from her last and longest spaceflight. She’s spent more time off the planet than any other American: 665 days over three space station missions. She’s also the world’s most experienced female spacewalker, with 10 under her spacesuit belt. Whitson was the first woman to command the International Space Station, holding the position twice, and the oldest woman ever to fly in space. She was also
the only woman to have served as chief of NASA’s male-dominated astronaut corps. Fellow astronauts called her a “space ninja.” “It’s been the greatest honor to live out my lifelong dream of being a @NASA Astronaut,” Whitson said via Twitter, thanking “all who have supported me along the way.” “As I reminisce on my many treasured memories, it’s safe to say my journey at NASA has been out of this world!” The 58-year-old biochemist, who grew up on an Iowa hog farm, joined NASA as a researcher in 1986 and became

Apple sets up iPhones to relay location for 911 calls Michael Liedtke San Francisco (AP) - Apple is trying to drag the U.S.’s antiquated system for handling 911 calls into the 21st century. If it lives up to Apple’s promise, the iPhone’s next operating system will automatically deliver quicker and more reliable information pinpointing the location of 911 calls to about 6,300 emergency response centers in the U.S. Apple is trying to solve a problem caused by the technological mismatch between a 50-year-old system built for landlines and today’s increasingly sophisticated smartphones. An estimated 80 percent of roughly 240 million emergency
calls in the U.S. this year will come from mobile phones, most of which are capable of precisely tracking where their users are. Emergency calling centers, however, don’t get that detailed location information from mobile 911 calls. Instead, they get the location of the cellular tower transmitting the call, and must rely on other methods to figure out where the caller is. That can take up precious time and often isn’t very accurate, especially when calls come from inside a building. Emergency responders are sometimes dispatched a mile or more away from a caller’s location. Apple’s upcoming 911 feature relies on technology
from RapidSOS, a New York startup. The approach developed by Apple and RapidSOS sends location data from an iPhone to a “clearinghouse” accessible to emergency calling centers. Only the 911 calling centers will be able to see the data during the call, and none of it can be used for non-emergency purposes, according to Apple. Individual call centers will each have to embrace the technology required to communicate with the RapidSOS clearinghouse. Some centers already have the compatible software, according to Apple, but others will have to install upgrades to their existing software. Apple expects calling centers
for large metropolitan areas to upgrade more quickly than those in rural areas. Tom Wheeler, a former chairman for the Federal Communications Commission, believes Apple’s new approach for locating 911 calls will set a new industry standard. “This is going to save a lot of lives,” said Wheeler, now a visiting professor at Harvard University. He said he hopes other phone makers will follow Apple’s lead. The planned changes were announced Monday in Nashville, Tennessee during a 911 convention. They’ll be part of iOS 12, the next version of Apple’s iPhone software, which the company will release in September as a free update.
an astronaut in 1996. Her last spaceflight, spanning 2016 and 2017, lasted close to 10 months. Only Russian men have spent more time in space: Gennady Padalka holds the record with 879 days over five missions. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine called Whitson an inspiration, citing her determination and dedication to science, exploration and discovery. “She set the highest standards for human spaceflight operations,” Brian Kelly, director of flight operations at
Johnson Space Center in Houston, said in a statement, “as well as being an outstanding role model for women and men in America and across the globe.” Before leaving the space station last September, Whitson said she would miss the orbiting outpost - an “awe-inspiring creation” - and the views from 250 miles up. “I will miss seeing the enchantingly peaceful limb of our Earth from this vantage point. Until the end of my days, my eyes will search the horizon to see that curve,” she said.

GIS students become teachers
For all parents of children who attend local Thai schools here in Pattaya, they will know that Wai Khru falls on any Thursday in June. Wai Khru is the day when students pay their respects and show their love to their teachers, and the blind and visually impaired students held their ceremony on the final Thursday of the month, exactly two weeks after the visit by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who is patron of the school. From each class, from kindergarden to grade 9, two representatives came forward and presented a beautifully decorated floral arrangement and a live plant to Khun Chid, principal at the school, and also to their own teachers. Many former students returned for the ceremony, traveling long distances to meet their former teachers. Several former students who returned for the ceremony are older than all the current teachers, but they came to pay respect for what they are doing for the current students. Not only did the teachers receive gifts from their students, but all staff also received a brooch to commemorate the recent royal visit to the school. Father

Mark Beales IB Diploma students from Garden International School (GIS) have been visiting a local Thai school to help teach children English. The International Baccalaureate (IB) students created a mini-English course
for the primary students at a nearby school. They planned, organised and then taught the lessons every week. This was part of their Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) project, which is an important part of the IB Diploma. IB Diploma Coordinator Mr Beales said, “It’s great that
these students have taken the initiative and delivered such a useful project. This is more evidence that IB goes beyond academic excellence and prepares students for university and beyond far more than any other courses.” GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya.
A well-deserved award. Wiboon Limpanawooth, Vice President of the Father Ray Foundation presented a special award to Khru Taweeporn for her dedication to the students,
and the ceremony ended with the students singing a song to thank their teachers. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@fr-ray.org

Nureeyoh said that she began collecting swallow nests, created by swallows using their saliva, 3 years ago. “They are particularly prized in Asian culture due to their rarity, and supposedly high nutritional value and exquisite flavor”, she commented. “I collect the nests every 6 weeks and sell them to restaurants in Hat Yai district,
Songkhla province.” Nureeyoh claims she earns about 70,000 baht every 3 months from selling the nests. She hopes to break even within 3 years. Nureeyoh can earn around 31,000 baht for a kilogram of bird nests and at least 35,000 baht when the demand is high. More people in the restive south have begun breeding swallows due to the growing demand. (NNT)

Merry Overtures
Kabalevsky in Perth, 1974. We tend to associate the word overture with opera because the two have existed side by side for the last four hundred years. The word looks slightly French which is not surprising, because it is. It means “opening” and it’s used to describe the orchestral introduction to an opera. Even the earliest known opera, written in the late 1590s by the Italian singer-composer Jacopo Peri is preceded by a short instrumental section. The custom continued through the history of opera. Perhaps the original idea was to give the audience
sufficient time to shuffle around and settle down before the serious stuff began. The notion of introductory music also crept into the movie industry but served a different purpose: to provide an appropriate mood setting during the opening credits. By the end of the eighteenth century, popular opera overtures were often played as separate items in the concert hall. Not long afterwards, the so-called concert overture began to appear. It was intended not as an introduction to an opera but as a standalone piece, often played at the beginning of a concert.
The word overture was adopted possibly because no one felt the need for an alternative. Many of these concert overtures were based on literary themes and although Weber wrote a couple of them, it’s generally assumed that the first genuine concert overture was A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1826) by the seventeen-year-old Felix Mendelssohn derived of course by Shakespeare’s play of the same name. Mendelssohn went on to write several other notable concert overtures such as Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage (1828) and The Hebrides (1830) inspired by his visit to the Scottish island of Staffa in the summer of the previous year. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the concert overture was firmly established and remained a favourite among composers for generations. RimskyKorsakov’s Russian Easter Festival Overture springs to mind as does Tchaikovsky’s old pot-boiler, the 1812 Overture. The twentieth century saw the appearance of countless others including Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture and Walton’s Portsmouth Point. Incidentally, Malcolm Arnold wrote A Grand, Grand Overture in 1956 which is a hilariously vulgar spoof on the heroic concert overtures of the late nineteenth century. It’s scored for an enormous orchestra with organ, three Hoover vacuum cleaners, an electric floor polisher and four rifles. In contrast, these two lively overtures are operatic overtures but they’ve become popular concert pieces in their own right.
Dmitri Kabalevsky (1904-1987): Overture to Colas Breugnon. New England Conservatory Philharmonia cond. Andrew Litton (Duration: 05:42; Video: 1080p HD)
This overture is from his three-act opera Colas Breugnon, written between 1936 and 1938 and based on a novel by the French dramatist, novelist, essayist, art historian and mystic, Romain Rolland.
wonderful at the time and still sounds a fresh as ever. The sizzling opening section is tricky to bring off successfully and there are several other recordings on YouTube in which the ensemble is all over the place. Not so with these students from the New England Conservatory who give a thoroughly professional performance. Kabalevsky was a prolific composer of piano music and made a significant impact on Russian music education. Like Glinka, little of his work is known in the West with the exception perhaps of the Third Piano Concerto and the Violin Concerto. This really is a shame for he wrote some wonderful works including four piano concertos and four symphonies.
In case you’d forgotten (or possible never knew) Galicia is an autonomous community in Spain which lies in the farthest north-west corner of the country just north of Portugal. London Symphony. Perhaps best known for his opera West Side Story, Bernstein was also an author, music lecturer, and brilliant pianist. Music critic Donal Henahan, claimed that Bernstein was “one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history.” His operetta Candide was first performed in 1956 and based on the novella of the same name written almost exactly two hundred years earlier by the French writer, historian and philosopher Voltaire. The overture is a lively and engaging work with a catchy opening theme which gives way to a passionate melody (01:24) that recurs triumphantly later in the work. This theme has a wonderfully fluid quality produced by using alternate bars of two and three beats. The overture combines energy, delight, passion and vulgarity and the exciting Rossinistyle crescendo (04:57) drives this heart-warming work to a satisfying conclusion.

‘The Anomaly’ slowly simmers as story groundwork is set up Jeff Ayers Rumors have swirled that early in the 20th century an explorer on the Colorado River discovered a cavern high up in the rocks of the Grand Canyon. The stories of what he found are fantastic and hard to believe, which is perfect for Nolan Moore, an archaeologist who hosts a conspiracy theory show that explores historical mysteries without actually solving anything. With his team of cameramen and experts for the region, Nolan decides to see if they can find this strange cave and prove the wild claims from that earlier time. The trip starts off uneventfully for the team of men and women, but when they spot what might be the cave they are seeking, they immediately see the possibility of fame and fortune. For Moore, it’s a chance to finally be successful in proving one of the conspiracy theories that his show promotes. What they discover at first seems a bit odd, as the things they see differ from the historical account. The more they explore, the more mysterious it gets. From all appearances, someone tried to conceal the cave. While they discover the truth behind the cave, they will wish they had never found it. Michael Rutger’s “The Anomaly” slowly simmers as the groundwork is set up. The exploration is also a bit slow going as well to keep the reader guessing as to what is honestly
going on inside this cave. When the big reveal happens, it comes with a dose of horror, violence and complex science. Rutger has crafted an intriguing and, at times, somewhat graphic tale that’s never predictable and will appeal to fans of exploration and survival along with “The X-Files” crowd. (AP)

In ‘Day of the Soldado,’ an equally bleak ‘Sicario’
Jake Coyle Los Angeles (AP) - There’s an oppressive bleakness to the brutal action-thriller “Sicario: Day of the Soldado.” But with faces like Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro, what are you going to do? Amid the dust cloud of violence that settles over the “Sicario” sequel, nothing stands out like the furrowed brow of Brolin’s grimace or the cold, worn-out stare of del Toro. They look like gunslingers from an Anthony Mann or Sam Peckinpah western, just with heavier ammo and dark sunglasses. With such sunken, worldweary eyes, in the heyday of film noir del Toro and Brolin would have made a killing. They do plenty of that, too, in “Sicario: Day of the Soldado.” Matt Graver (Brolin) and his cartel lawyer turned undercover pal Alejandro
Gillick (del Toro) are again called into action in a blackops operation along the Mexico border, this time without the benefit of Emily Blunt, who starred in Denis Villeneuve’s “Sicario” (2015). Blunt played a less experienced FBI agent with the naivety to be horrified by things that Graver and Gillick wouldn’t bat an eye at — you know, sissy stuff like dozens of decaying corpses stuffed like insulation into a Mexican cartel safe house. No, Graver and just-as-grave Gillick have seen it all. And Blunt’s absence leaves “Day of Soldado” without the mounting sense of dread that defined the first one. It also lacks the muscular camera work of Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins. With such missing talent, it would be easy to view “Day of the Soldado” as a cheaper knockoff. Easier, still, considering the movie’s poster — of a guntoting skeleton draped in a flag — most resembles a Guns N’ Roses album cover. It’s better than that, but not
This image shows Benicio Del Toro (left) and Josh Brolin in a scene from “Sicario: Day of the Soldado.” (Richard Foreman, Jr./Sony Pictures via AP) by much. Stefano Sollima (“Gomorrah”) steps in to direct a script by Taylor Sheridan, whose neo-westerns (“Hell or High Water,” ‘’Wind River”) have made him the genre’s best new hope. Sheridan wrote “Sicario,” too, which sought to modernize the drugwar thriller to catch it up to the lethal battles of today’s cartels. But in its ballet of SUVS sweeping across the border, “Sicario” mostly stood for a ruthless, borderless American power equaling the
ultra-violence of a new era, with all the moral doubt that accompanies such a fight. “Day of the Soldado” begins with a similar stab at political relevance. A supermarket in Kansas City is attacked by a swarm of suicide bombers, the last of whom we watch detonate his vest just as a mother and child are trying to tiptoe past. Sheridan and Sollima could easily defend the imagery: This is indeed a not uncommon happening. But it’s a sensationalist way to show
it. Is there anyone left who doesn’t understand the horror of terrorism? It’s believed the bombers were jihadis who infiltrated the country by slipping through the Mexican border. Told that the cartels control the trafficking of migrants over the border, the Secretary of Defense (Matthew Modine) opts to clandestinely prompt a war between two cartels. Graver’s plan is to kidnap the 12-yearold daughter of a cartel kingpin to kick-start the war. “There are no rules this time,” Graver tells Gillick, even if it’s unclear how much Graver ever heeded the rules in the first place. Where “Day of the Soldado” most succeeds is in the blur or maybe altogether disintegration of American altruism in a heinous fight. In one scene, Gillick switches from kidnapper to DEA agent by unhurriedly slipping on a government jacket, but not changing gun or even his seat. Things go from dark to darker still, as “Day of the Soldado” sets its genre tale against the backdrop of Mexican
migrants in a way that sometimes feels topical and sometimes exploitive. As grim as the world of “Sicario” is — and Sollima and Sheridan really wants us to know just how grim it is — there’s also a sentimental stab at redemption by way of the kingpin daughter (played by a very good Isabela Moner), who ends up in a desert trek with Gillick. Still, there’s a mean potency to the borderland noir of both “Sicario” films, enough that it sometimes recalls another tale of explosions and drug enforcement agents on both sides of the border: Orson Welles’ “Touch of Evil.” “Day of the Soldado” is too sober and grim for the sweaty heat of “Touch of Evil.” But it has taken to heart one of its best lines: “All border towns bring out the worst in a country.” “Sicario: Day of Soldado,” a Sony Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “strong violence, bloody images, and language.” Running time: 123 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

After 4,000 episodes, a halt for Jerry Springer’s show David Bauder New York (AP) — Somehow it doesn’t seem right for Jerry Springer to exit quietly. There should be one last thrown chair or a bleep-filled tirade, at the very least. Instead, it was announced with no fanfare recently that he will stop making new episodes of his memorably raucous talk show, and neither Springer nor his bosses will talk about it. Producers said “there is a possibility” that more original episodes could be ordered sometime in the future but, since they wouldn’t answer questions, it’s not known how serious that possibility is. At its heyday in the 1990s, Springer’s show challenged Oprah Winfrey for U.S.
TV talk show host Jerry Springer is shown in this Jan. 16, 2014 file photo. (Photo by Charles Sykes/ Invision/AP) daytime television supremacy with TV studios filled with seething spurned lovers, gender fluid guests before that was a term and pretty much anyone who was spoiling
for a fight. It even provoked serious end-of-civilizationas-we-know-it talk. Springer, a former Cincinnati mayor who realized he had to do something to distinguish himself in a competitive market, was the low-key ringmaster who didn’t take himself too seriously and let you know he was in on the joke. During an interview with The Associated Press at his show’s 25th anniversary three years ago, Springer said that anyone could do his job if they learned three phrases: “You did what?” ‘’Come on out!” and “We’ll be right back.” He presided over 4,000 episodes. Some of his shows last month illustrated that the formula hadn’t changed
much: “Stripper Sex Turned Me Straight,” ‘’Stop Pimpin’ My Twin Sister,” ‘’My Bestie is Stalkin’ You,” ‘’Hooking Up With My Therapist” and “Babes with Baguettes.” After more than 4,000 episodes, it’s hard for things to register on the outrage meter. Between reality television and the verbal slugfests of cable television news, there are plenty of places viewers can turn for experiences that fill the role that Springer once did. “He was lapped not only by other programs but by real life,” said David Bianculli, a television historian and professor at Monmouth University. At this point, asking to talk about Springer’s legacy is a little like commenting on an obituary for someone you forgot was alive, he said.
Gibb is the last surviving member of the fraternal trio whose falsetto harmonies and disco beats powered huge 1970s hits including “How Deep is Your Love,” ‘’Stayin’ Alive” and “Tragedy.” Maurice died in 2003 and his twin Robin in 2012. After being knighted at the palace by Prince Charles on
Tuesday, June 26, the 71year-old songwriter said: “If it was not for my brothers, I would not be here.” Gibb, who can now call himself Sir Barry, said the honor was “a bit surreal.” He said “it is a high award that your culture can give you and that is something I am enormously proud of.”

Queen: ‘News of the World’ mott@pattayamail.com By the time of Queen’s sixth album “News Of The World” (1977) the band already ruled the world of rock music and were in the prime of their careers. It showed up brilliantly on this album with all four members of the group bristling with confidence. Hence the song writing, instruments and singing are all shared out, with everybody shining. The album was a smash hit internationally, going four times platinum in the United States alone and selling over 6 million copies in all. Of course it also dripped some of the best known singles of the Seventies. The double A-sided “We Are The Champions”/”We Will Rock You” has been played at every sports ground in the world and especially at cup finals. If you put “We Are The Champions” on in any gathering, automatically everybody is a Freddie Mercury wannabe. The second single “Spread Your Wings” is probably an even better song, though
perhaps not as commercial. But they all stand the test of time very well. The album opens up with the rabble rousing “We Will Rock You”, designed by its author Brian May to be a song to get the crowd going. With its Stomp-Stomp-ClapPause four/four measure it’s a complete earworm of a song.
In the running order of the tracks released on the original album it’s Freddie Mercury’s turn next with the songwriting on the aforementioned “We Are The Champions”. Then third out of the traps is a real blast with “Sheer Heart Attack”, written by Roger Taylor and a screaming rocker if ever there was one. In contrast the next lament “All Dead All Dead” is a song inspired by the death of Brian May’s boyhood cat. The quiet man of the band John Deacon then gets his
name on the score-sheet with “Spread Your Wings” while “Fight From The Inside” is one of the few Queen songs almost entirely played by one member: Roger Taylor wrote it, sang the lyrics and played the drums and guitars. Slash has been quoted as saying the jangling guitar riffs are amongst his favorites. “Get Down, Make Love” opens side 2 and is one of the most sexually orientated songs ever laid down in a recording studio (snigger). Immediately following it is “Sleeping on the Sidewalk”, a blues excursion from Brian May that was recorded in one take (mistakes and all). It has a lovely, loose feel to it. “Who Needs You” is another John Deacon song, featuring Spanish guitars and Freddie Mercury on cowbell. “It’s Late” would be the stand out track of almost any other album. Written by Brian May as a three act song, the last act sees the band really wig out in true rocking style. Lastly we have “My Melancholy Blues”, a showpiece for the talents of Freddie Mercury and his jazzy style. It’s a fitting way to close out a classic album.
Queen in 1977 (from left) Roger Taylor, John Deacon, Freddie Mercury and Brian May. Queen backed up the album with an extensive tour of America and Europe. It was the ‘must have’ ticket for both the end of 1977 and early 1978. Queen played a full set with all the stage props, pyrotechnics etc. and did not even bother with a support band on the tour, such was their ability to draw a crowd. Frank Kelly’s artwork for the album was also groundbreaking.

Joe Jackson turned his children into stars, but at a price Nekesa Mumbi Moody New York (AP) — Joe Jackson once had his own dreams of success. He tried to be a boxer and then played guitar with a group called The Falcons. But he realized early on that there was an overwhelming pool of musical talent in his children, particularly a little bright-eyed boy named Michael. He channeled his ambition through them, creating one of the greatest pop vocal groups, The Jackson Five, and launched the career of one of entertainment’s greatest legends in Michael Jackson, as well as another superstar talent, daughter Janet. Yet the legacy of Jackson, who died last week in Las Vegas at the age of 89, was
steeped not only in the brilliant guidance of his children into the world’s premiere entertainment dynasty, but the iron fist with which he did it. Michael described beatings with the switch of a tree branch, and a fear so great of his father that he would sometimes vomit at the sight of him. His children called him Joseph — they weren’t allowed to call him by fatherly terms. “You call me Joseph,’” Janet Jackson recalled her father telling her once when she called him dad. “I’m Joseph to you.” By the time they were all adults, his children severed professional ties to him, preferring to let others guide the careers he once nurtured. Still, in times of turmoil, it was Joe that they continued
Joe Jackson (left) and his son Michael (right) are shown in this March 14, 2005 file photo. (AP Photo/ Carlo Allegri) to turn to. When Michael Jackson stood trial on allegations that he sexually abused a child (he was acquitted), it
was Joe Jackson who was at his side on most days. Janet Jackson rationalized that her father wanted the best for his
children, even if he didn’t go about it the right way. Michael credited his father with making sure his children weren’t cheated by industry vultures, and noted that unlike some child stars, his parents didn’t take their children’s money to enrich themselves. “I’d say we’re among a fortunate few artists who walked away from a childhood in the business with anything substantial — money, real estate, other investments. My father set all these up for us,” Jackson wrote in his 1988 autobiography. “But still I don’t know him, and that’s sad for a son who hungers to understand his own father. He’s still a mystery to me and may always be one.”
The relationship with many of his children never improved. Janet Jackson said in a CNN interview in 2011 that she rarely spoke to her father, and by adulthood, they had severed ties with Jackson as their manager. When Michael Jackson died of an overdose of the anesthetic propofol in 2009, he had been estranged from his father, and his bodyguards recall not allowing Joe Jackson in when he attempted to see the superstar at his estate. In his own autobiography, Joe Jackson acknowledged being a stern parent, saying he believed it was the only way to prepare his children for the tough world of show business. But he denied many of the claims of physical abuse.

PCEC immerses into a world of Virtual Reality Today’s technology now makes it possible to immerse yourself into Virtual Reality (VR) to experience almost any of life’s experiences. Although VR is still in its early development stages, it has been around for a long time. Just look at the aviation and gaming industries. Early aviation training utilized radiometric VR, with such devices as the Link Trainers, which provided WWII pilots with VR experiences without leaving the ground. Games have advanced exponentially with the aid of computer technology. Advancements continue and we can only imagine where it will take us.
Jakob Friis explains how Virtual Reality technology continues to improve and describes its impact on your life today and in the future. Jakob Friis expertly outlined the definition and the whys and uses of VR at the Club’s Sunday meeting. He also provided hands-on devices he uses in his business. The business he started is called Meptek where he is a partner and the Virtual Reality expert. Meptek is a training business that provides a variety of courses for both educational institutions as well as private businesses. He has had the business for almost 3 years now and so far, he has taught at one of the most prestigious private schools in Oxford - England, The Copenhagen Marriott Hotel and at some of the biggest companies such as FLSmidth in Denmark. He has become an expert in VR and uses this technology in his business. So, what is VR? It is simply a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted in a seemingly real or physical way. A person uses special electronic equipment, such as a helmet, with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors which helps the user practice and prepare for the future. Uses are limited only to today’s technology, cost and imagination. VR is advancing quickly but it isn’t mainstream…yet. Jakob’s passion is public speaking and training. He was drawn to Virtual Reality, initially as a hobby, but soon found that this technology
fits his business exceptionally well. He utilizes what he calls a “Magic Tool.” This is a 360-degree camera that has two, 180-degree cameras, mounted on a tripod. When activated, two video images cover a full 360-degree circle. The images are then electronically, seamlessly, “stitched” to provide the user, using a specially designed pair of goggles, the ability to look in any direction, by simply turning your head and view the area as if you are sitting in the room. He uses this VR camera to record a student’s presentation, then he has the student put on the goggles and critique his own presentation as if he were sitting in
Jakob Friis explains how his company Meptek uses a 360 degree camera and Virtual Reality goggles to improve their student’s ability to give better presentations.
Jakob Friis before his presentation invited PCEC members and guests to try on some of the Virtual Reality goggles he brought with him to experience its wonders. Here, member Jim Johnson is thoroughly enjoying the experience. the audience. He uses it to help the student look for such issues as monotone voice, body language, facial expressions, talking too fast/ slow, and audience reactions. All this is in almost real-time, allowing very quick feedback, allowing the student make corrections, on the spot. Uses beyond training were also discussed. For example, the 360-degree camera is now used in the real estate industry. A potential buyer can wear the goggles and experience what it would be like to live in the house, from a remote location, perhaps form another country. Car sales-people are now able to let you see what it feels like to be in a car that you might be interested in. With the goggles you can
look at the dash displays and the interior without actually being at the dealership. Nursing home residents may find this technology to be life changing. The elderly generally have extensive life experiences and would like to revisit exciting places, but due to physical limitations they can’t. With VR, they can re-visit their travels or go places they have always wanted to go. Studies show that providing happiness to the elderly increases their quality of life, provides less lonesomeness and will increase life expectancy. This could truly change the lives of many of the elderly. The talk was very well received and the audience had many questions about the potential uses of virtual reality as well as the dangers
MC Roy Albiston presents Jakob Friis with the PCEC’s Certificate of Appreciation for his informative and interesting talk about Virtual Reality and its benefits.
of it becoming extremely popular in recent years. Jakob reassured the audience that the same has been said about the laptop, mobile phone and other technologies when they first were introduced to the public. Over time the public will become more and more accepting of the technology as they could see the benefit of it, especially in the educational and medical sector. In the educational sector virtual reality can increase learning retention due to the much more detailed experience the technology provides in comparison with a textbook. In the medical sector surgeons are able to perform procedures in virtual reality where they can gain experience and knowledge about the procedure as well as train for worst-case scenarios before performing the actual procedure with a patient. This is most comparable with flight simulation training that an airplane pilot must go through in order to be allowed to fly the aircraft. The price has dropped dramatically. You can actually use your smart phone, which has a motion sensor, by placing it in a headset. The bigger the phone screen the better the experience. Current VR technology is available to almost everyone with prices dropping every year. Currently, a high-end, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive costs approximately 100,000 baht ($3,000 US), a mid-range Oculus Go, HTC Standalone, costs about 20,000 baht ($600 US) and a low-end, Logilink – can be bought for as little as 800 baht ($25 US) After Jakob’s presentation, MC Roy Albiston brought everyone up to date on upcoming events which was followed by the Open Forum where members and guests can ask questions or make comments about Expat living in Thailand. ul ‘Monaco’ with epic party Jetsada Homklin The Riviera Group continued its dominance of the Pattaya property market with the launch of its latest project, Riviera Monaco. Pattaya Mayor Anan Charoenchasri and former MP and Education Ministry secretary Chanyuth Hengtrakul were the guests of honor at the June 23 launch party on Najomtien Soi 4 where Riviera Managing Director Winston Gale and his wife Sukanya welcomed guests ranging from Pattaya City Council members and leading business people in Thailand. The highlight of the celebration was the glamorous theme and entertainment, with a team of popular celebrities and entertainers for the occasion including Elizabeth Sadler, Emi Stames and more. Entertainment for the night was provided by the Unity Band Pattaya. The main raffle prize was a pair of diamond earrings worth 350,000 baht. Following the success of the Riviera Wong Amat and the Riviera Jomtien, the Riviera Monaco was created to provide a new experience in luxury living and lifestyle. Winston extolled his new undertaking saying, “The name says it all, as buyers/ investors will get to experience a similar feel to Monaco in the tropics of Thailand. Barnett gets the gong PSC Golf from The Billabong Bar Monday, June 25, King’s Naga Stableford King’s Naga was the venue for the Billabong on Monday and it was the first time we had visited this course. Apart from the greens being sanded it was a pleasure to play on and in the views of the players it would rate up there with the best. When the greens get better we will certainly visit more often. With only 10 players and nobody else on the course we played two 5-balls and it was ‘millionaire golf’ and took only about 4 hours to

trees that stopped the breeze from getting to you, the day was perfect for golf. The scoring was surprising as well with Gary Player taking third spot with a fine 35 points. Second went to the departing Bob Scott with 38 points and taking the main event was Paul Greenaway with 39. There was only one ‘2’, coming from Gary Ritchie.
Wednesday, June 27, Green Valley - Medal It certainly rained on our parade today, starting gently and building to a crescendo later in the round sufficient to stop play for 30 minutes. Devereux delivers at Bangpra PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort Pattaya Tuesday, June 26, Bangpra - Stableford On Tuesday we went to Bangpra and as we hadn’t played here for some time we were wondering how it would be. We were happy with our choice as the course was in very good condition and we enjoyed our game. It was a cloudy day with most of the time a cool breeze and not too hot. We saw an exciting game between Paddy Devereux and Daniel Oshiro as both scored 38 points but Paddy won on the count-back. We had some problems with the par-3’s and Jonathan Pratt was the only to get a ball on the green.
Thursday, June 28, Khao Kheow Stableford Khao Kheow was our venue
unable to play today he joined us on the 1st tee to wish everyone well in this month’s medal. As you can imagine, the waterlogged fairways did not allow any roll on your shot and many of the golfers played the first nine with a burst of energy only to fade like a damp quib with the arrival of heavy rain. This was case for Miss Prae who had 2 quadruple bogies on the back nine but still finished with a net 71, losing to Miss Pin on count-back and also to Miss Poopay who birdied the 1st hole and kept her game together for a net 71 and first place. Jeff North double bogied the 12th and 14th for third place with a net 70, one behind Arch Armstrong who bucked the trend and increased his homeward score by 6 shots with a net 69. His

The monthly scramble was held at Plutaluang on the East and South course in perfect conditions for golf. The course was in magnificent condition and the greens were just fantastic to putt on. The scoring was good, as it normally is at this course, with the winners being in the 50s net. Third spot went to the Billabong B team consisting of Greig Ritchie, Bob Newell, Sasicha Duangham and Sandy Chapo with a great score of 59.9. The team of Stan Rees, Willem Lasonder, Dave Smith and Daniel came second with 58.4, and taking the top spot was the quartet of Arch Armstrong, Gary Ritchie, Chris Dodd and Paul Hack with a fine score of 56.9. Next month will be back at Phoenix, but August will be at Plutaluang again.
Gardner on top at Mountain Shadow The Jomtien Golf Society Monday, June 25, Mt. Shadow Stableford Another empty course again today and an early tee off with nobody in front at all. Bruce Gardner took the win with 33 points and with a 20/17 back nine countback, Paul Young placed second ahead of John Carlin in third. John Doyle was the last man in the podium in fourth with 25 points. There were no near pin winners in division 1 but for the first time ever, with us an exact distance for two players on the same green, Ray Daws and Bruce Gardner shared the prize in the second flight on the 5th hole. Bruce Gardner had the sole birdie ‘2’ in either division.

Friday, June 29, Eastern Star Stableford Another seven weeks before the clubhouse renovations are completed but we all can’t see what’s going on at the moment. Out on the course there were some amazing pin positions today, which some of the members have never seen before, and this was reflected in the scores. The equal cut in the two divisions today was 10-18.7 and 18.9 + and there were
two 35’s coming in; Colin Aspinall scoring one of them to win division 1 with John Carlin in second one point behind, Jerry Sweetnam in third on 33 and Ray Daws fourth with 32. Frank Kelly was the winner in division 2 with the other 35pointer, with Bruce Gardner coming second on 34, Glyn Evans third on 31 and Hennke fourth with 30 points. Near pins went to (Div 1) Marc Brunner and Jerry Sweetnam (2) and (Div 2) Colin Aspinall, Paul Butler and Ray Daws. John Seton, in division 2, birdied the 6th for the only ‘2’ of the day while there was a rollover in division 1 to next Friday.

for a comfortable round and we all finished before the threatening skies opened up. Some very good scoring today and leading the way was Kevyn Wright (12) with 40 points. His handicap is quickly coming down now. Taking second spot was Glenn Armitstead (17) on 36 points while third went to Craig Hitchens (13) on 35. There were no 2’s today. A special mention to Russell Gilroy, who thought he was back at Bondi Beach and had the caddies calling him ‘Mr Bunker’ after just the front nine.
As far as I know this is the oldest course in the area and today it was in better condition than the last time we visited. I suppose the fact it had had less rain allowed it to be cut which made it a pleasure to play, although still as difficult as usual. The fairways were reasonable to play off and with them cut we got a bit of run and very little mud on the ball. The rough was a bit shorter so easier to get out of, a big help when you are in it so often. This was always the course with the fastest greens, some of them were over the top and if you got above the pin it was practically impossible to stop the ball on the way down. Well those days have been over for some time, however on this day the greens were faster than the last visit and quite testing. Back at base it was soon into the results and the winner with 38 points was Brian Gabe, ahead of Brian Parish in second with 35. Taking third was Gordon Clegg with 34 points and in fourth was Dick Warberg with 31. Good job Dick got this score because we had 5 players with
Watts crowned golfer of the month PSC Golf from The Bunker Boys par-three greens. Finally, on the last, a couple of players managed to hit the green with Geoff Cox being nearest to the pin thereby sweeping the pool.
Monday, June 25, Pleasant Valley – Stableford 1st Geoff Parker (12) 42pts 2nd Robby Watts (11) 39pts 3rd Les Hall (23) 37pts Unlike soggy Soi Dao, last week today’s round got underway under bright sunny skies with a rainbow round at the Pleasant Valley course. As usual, the course was in excellent condition, although a little damp underfoot in places so the ‘pick, clean and place’ rule was applied. Play was a little slow due to a couple of groups out before us that were a little tardy, however, the round was completed within four hours which is acceptable. Today the standard of play was excellent. Les Hall took third place with a score of thirty-seven, a score that most days would be good enough to win. Robby Watts continues to show good form and took second with thirty-nine points, but first place went to Geoff Parker with a superb score of forty-two, a round that announced Geoff hasn’t given up on the golfer of the month race. Near pins went to Neil Carter, Les Hall, Sean Murphy, and Alan Sullivan.
Wednesday, June 27, Greenwood – Stableford 1st Robbie Watts (11) 35pts 2nd Neil Carter (12) 34pts 3rd Sean Murphy (18) 33pts Twelve golfers set off for the Greenwood course under grey skies for our midweek game. After a short delay play got underway but the round was punctuated with showers and drizzle but not heavy enough to stop play. We were allocated A and C nines with C being significantly wetter than A and reminiscent of last week at Soi Dao. The course appeared to be empty so nobody to blame but ourselves for slow play. Continuing on from his good form on Monday, Robby Watts took the honors with thirty-five points, someone pointed out that it must have been the only time in recent months that an Australian has won anything. Someone suggested we frisk him for sandpaper. Second, went to Neil Carter a point adrift while Sean Murphy made a first appearance in the winner’s circle taking third place with thirty-three. In a rare occurrence, nobody managed to hit any of the first three
1st Robbie Watts (10) 39pts 2nd Jimmy Carr (17) 36pts 3rd Neil Carter (12) 34pts Treasure Hill seems to be the one course in our area that has got its act together. Golf package price is attractive all year round, the course is always well presented, and the caddies are professional and attentive. In recent times we have seen the purchase of new tractors and mowers, new golf carts, and caddie uniforms. In addition drinks stations and toilets have been refurbished. Now we are seeing the installment of new tee boxes and many areas are being returfed. As a result, the course is always well patronised as it was again today, hence a relatively slow round by low season standards but not unduly so. Robbie Watts continued on his winning way today, taking out first place with an excellent thirty-nine points, henceforth he shall be known as Mr Consistency. Second place went to Jimmy Carr with a tidy round of thirtysix whilst Neil Carter took out third place with thirty-four points. In keeping with his good round, Robbie snared three of the four near pins with Neil Carter preventing a clean sweep taking the remaining near pin. Both Neil and Robbie were tied on fifty-four points going into today’s round in the race for golfer of the month, needless to say, Robbie took it out with his win.
Don Carmody (right) with Tom Herrington. 30 points and the countback would have been fun. We had a front and back nine best score for those not in the first four. Best front nine came from John Pierre with 17 points and best back nine by Nigel Perry with 17 on countback over Barry Elphick.
Friday, June 29, Eastern Star – Stableford It’s been quite a while since the Tropical Golfers visited Eastern Star but recent reports from there had been positive, so it was time to go see for ourselves. This day, twelve intrepid golfers filled up at BJ’s Lodge and headed out to Ban Chang. Upon arrival at the course we found that the clubhouse is undergoing major renovations. It looks like a new locker room is in the works,
and who knows what else? The course was in good condition and greens true. Most forgot how tricky ES is, with very few “just hit it” holes. Most holes have some feature to deal with (water, narrow fairways, dogleg, etc.), forcing constant thinking during the round, which is painful for some. A few managed to get through however, and how did they score? Don Carmody (c/h 29) found some magic on the tough course and earned himself a fine 37 points to take first place. Tom Herrington (16) was a stroke back with 36 points to make it close, and then John Pierrel (13) scored a respectable 34, and Brian Parish (11) took final roll call with 33 points. Best 9 awards (non winning) went to Daryl Evans and Mashi Kaneta.

Barker bags the loot PSC Golf from the Pattaya Links Golf Society Monday, June 25, Laem Chabang Stableford A Flight 1st Tom Herrington (16) 40pts 2nd Tommy Marshall (6) 39pts 3rd Pete Seil (6) 37pts B Flight 1st Derek Phillips (20) 37pts 2nd Kym Richardson (19) 33pts 3rd Dave Jarvis (19) 32pts With the closure of the Mountain nine for refurbishment, the Lakes and Valley nines were in play - B and C to most of us and the course was in excellent condition throughout, with consistent greens running at 9 on the “stimp” and the weather was an extra bonus, with a light breeze adding some comfort. The large field was divided into two flights at sixteen and under and, with a quarter of the field playing off handicaps of ten or less, some fine golf was on show.
In the second flight Dave Jarvis - wig winner last time out - showed better form with 32 points taking third place from Tip Briney on countback. He was only one point behind the runner up, Kym Richardson (33) but a further four points behind the flight winner Irishman Derek Phillips, winning with an excellent 37 points. The top flight saw an allAmerican podium as Pete Seil took third place with 37 points, and Tommy Marshall take second with 39 points, whilst registering the best gross of the day, 75. The flight winner was Tom Herrington with an impressive forty points and he was duly awarded with the Green Jacket back at the Links. Near Pins were won by Len Jones (B5), Mike Ehlert (B5), Dave Arataki (C5) and Graham Pratt (C8).
Garry Barker (left) with Phil Davies. Consolation awards went to John Pierrel for his best front nine of 21 points whilst Garry Barker took the back nine honours with 21 points also.
Friday, June 29, Treasure Hill – Stableford 1st Garry Barker (4) 36pts
2nd Tip Briney (23) 35pts 3rd Phil Davies (12) 34pts 4th Dave Hewson (9) 33pts Due to recent inclement weather twenty two golfers expected to be met with the news that it was carts on path only. Much to our surprise, and joy for some, the fairways had dried out so
well that the greens staff had been able to get on course with the mowers, so that the fairways were in great condition. Firm and with some run. Some front nine greens still showed signs of recent sanding, but the back nine was in excellent condition. Greens were measured at 8.5 “stimp”, some thought slightly slower than that, but the putts ran true. Among a large group of golfers from Darwin, Australia were five players who have come to play a few games at Links, having extended their stay in Pattaya. They have all played a lot of golf recently, and still going strong. Garry Barker is one of them and is a cool, complete golfer, who is always likely to par a golf course. He didn’t make par today, but his 36 points went very
close, 74 gross, to earn him a well deserved first Green Jacket. Tip Briney, we have said before, can be very good or very bad. Today he was very good and took second spot with a fine 35 points. Phil Davies has been in pretty good form recently, and carried that on to score 34 points and the third place. Dave Hewson started this trip with the “wig” and then found his real form, and so, said “farewell” for now by grabbing fourth spot on countback from James Hudson, both with 33 points, very good scoring on this course. Near pins were claimed by Garry Barker (2), Dave Hewson (6), Colin Smith (13), and James Hudson (17) while the consolation nines awards went to John Harrison (front, 17pts) and Lachlan Gotz (back, 16pts).

1 Neil Wilkinson (14) 41pts 2nd David Gray (18) 39pts 3rd Eddie Townsend (21) 39pts Monday we took on C & A courses at Greenwood and it was a walk in the park for today’s winner Neil Wilkinson, in great form lately and deservedly taking the top spot on the podium. Shooting the best score of the week his 41 points also improved his Player of the Year aspirations and now sees him in joint second place with the skill and time to catch the current leader.
1 Freddy Starbeck (12) 37pts 2nd Jacob Cummings (6) 36pts 3rd Christian Boysen (9) 35pts Green Valley today and it was the battle of the Vikings with all three places going to the Danes. However it was that old war dog Freddy Starbeck who hammered his wannabe contenders into submission. but within ten minutes of the rain stopping the course was ready for play. The seasoned veterans (two players) who refrained from the temptation of alcohol led the
way and finished first and second! Jacob Cummings narrowly defeated Daryl Ottaway by a point to win the day and a place in the finals in December.
1st Wayne Coleman (16) 38pts 2nd Neil Wilkinson (12) 38pts 3rd Shane Te-Lee (16) 37pts With clear skies at Burapha and no threat of rain it was a perfect way to end the week. We normally play the A & B courses but today we played B & C which turned out to be quite an interesting combination. Taking full advantage of the break in tradition was Wayne Coleman whose 38 points and a count back was enough to take first place. Unfortunately it was Wayne’s last day in the Land of Smiles but he saved his best to the last day and goes home a winner.
Jumparnit shoots low gross at Treasure Hill 79 players, including 6 ladies, made the journey up Highway 331 to the Treasure Hill course to play in the latest PAGS monthly tournament on June 27. Play was from the yellow tee markers but still the course was the same challenge it always provides for players of all abilities. A heavy shower at around midday which lasted for about 30 minutes put a bit of a dampener on some rounds, but overall conditions may well have improved after the rain passed, with a light breeze alleviating the heat a little. As with most months there is one, or sometimes several outstanding performances
for the tournament. This month special mentions should go to Pelle Pettersson, who got the top spot in A Flight & 3 technical prizes, with Amphai Noksa getting the Ladies & a NTP. The C flight of handicaps 22+ was won by Mike Turner (H/cap 25), who led the way home by a clear 2 points with 39, to go with his NTP on #17, ahead of Sugar Ray Handford (24), while Dan Margetts (25) needed a countback to take third spot after signing for 35 points, with 18 on the back 9. The B flight, for handicaps 14-21, was tightly contested, with all placegetters separated by only 1 point. Glenn Armistead (18) was the winner
Vinai Jumparnit. on countback over Mikael Andersson (19) 22/19 after both signed for 37 points. Werner Schwarz (14) got the bronze medal position with
a well earned 36 points. Pelle (11) was the clear winner in A Flight with his 37 points, assisted by a chip in on #18, 2 points clear of Gerd Riedler (11) who also got a technical prize. The low spot on the podium required a 3way countback, with Urs Wandeler (12) coming out victorious on 34 points, over Steve Truelove and Vinai Jumparnit. Vinai Jumparnit won the Low Gross & 2 technical prizes, while other honorable mentions go out to multiple winners in the technical prizes, getting their maximum 2 prizes were Colin Ward, who got both Long Putts and Jeff Wylie.

The course was in great shape despite a light sanding of the greens which in no way detracted from putting line or length. Our regular lady player (Lorraine Percy) had no trouble with her chipping and putting and accordingly took out first place with a commendable 37 points. Twenty plus golfers turned out to compete for this month’s monthly mug and enthusiasm was high as reports coming back to us suggested the Pattavia course was in great shape. I can say that the feedback was a 100% correct - a great course in great shape (if you can handle the greens). We attacked the layout from the white tees in weather that was hot but with a light breeze that kept our playing conditions quite pleasant.

Brazil fan who is deaf, blind follows World Cup with help Sarah DiLorenzo Sao Paulo (AP) - Like fans all over soccer-mad Brazil, Carlos Junior followed every move the national team made on the field Monday in their 2-0 victory over Mexico. He wiped his brow every time Mexico closed in but failed to score. He banged the table or a drum when Brazil took a shot and missed. And he jumped up and down and hugged friends when Neymar finally put the ball in the net in the 51st minute. But Junior did not watch or listen to the game the way most Brazilians did. Instead, the 31-year-old massage therapist who is deaf and blind experienced the match with the help of interpreters using touch communication and a model soccer field to recount the passes, goals and fouls of the national team. Junior’s love of soccer and his way of following the
World Cup moved many in Latin America’s largest nation after a friend posted a video of him keeping up with Brazil’s group game against Costa Rica. The video caught the attention of national and international media and has been shared and seen by millions online. “The moment you do this, you show that a deaf and blind person is the same as any other person,” Junior, who communicates with tactile sign language, said of the video and its wide viewership. On Monday, Junior and a handful of other people with sight and hearing losses gathered at a cultural center in Sao Paulo to follow the game with the help of interpreters. Junior has followed soccer for as long as he can remember. He has Usher syndrome, which causes hearing and vision problems. While born deaf, he was able to see as a

(AP Photo/Nelson Antoine) child and even played goalkeeper on a team for deaf youth. At 14, his vision began to deteriorate, and he was fully blind by 23. He continued to cheer for his beloved Sao Paulo with the help of his father. “Before my dad would take my hand and say, ‘Ehh!
Look there! A goal! A goal!’ But information was missing,” Junior said. “I wanted to know if the ball hit the crossbar, what side was it on, the right side or the left side.” It was then that Helio Fonseca de Araujo, who is a sign language interpreter, proposed the idea of using
a model field. De Araujo had seen Maria Stella Nunes speak once about the field she built for her husband, who is deaf and has low vision and had asked for the model. Nunes interpreted Monday’s game for her husband, Carlos Roberto Lopes Nunes, at the same cultural center where Junior followed the game. Araujo then improved upon the original idea, building a bigger field and adding in the idea of using a second interpreter to give even more game information in real time. The system they have developed is this: Junior places his hands on the interpreter’s. One hand represents the ball, the other the player who has possession. The interpreter moves his hands around the model field to indicate the action. Meanwhile, another interpreter draws on Junior ’s
back, communicating which team and even which player (by tracing the player’s number) has the ball. Through his haptic, or touch, communication, the interpreter can also note fouls, yellow or red cards, blocks and saves. During the regular season, Junior often makes do by following games via text summaries posted online that a device translates into Braille for him. But for major games, he calls on de Araujo and others like him. The technique is so good that Junior even knew in previous games when Neymar fell down, or when Brazil coach Tite hurt himself while celebrating the team’s win over Costa Rica. “Even though they (deaf and blind people) don’t have access to lots of information, that doesn’t hinder their lives,” de Araujo said. “If society adapts to them, they can live normally.”
On eve of Le Tour, divisions remain after Froome’s drug case Andrew Dampf Paris (AP) - This was supposed to be the year Chris Froome was warmly welcomed into cycling royalty with an expected record-tying fifth Tour de France title. Instead, the Team Sky rider finds himself only freshly cleared of doping after an asthma drug case that dragged on for 10 months and revealed divisions with Tour organizers and France’s greatest living cyclist. Before the International Cycling Union (UCI) cleared Froome on Monday, the Amaury Sport Organisation had informed Sky it didn’t want Froome on the starting line Saturday in order to protect the image of the race. Froome had also been the target of a proposed rider
strike after five-time Tour champion Bernard Hinault suggested the rest of the peloton pull out in protest if he shows up at the start in the Vendee region along the Atlantic coastline. Froome had been racing under the cloud of a potential ban after a urine sample he provided at the Spanish Vuelta in September showed a concentration of the asthma drug salbutamol that was twice the permitted level. But the UCI announced on Monday that his sample results did not constitute an Adverse Analytical Finding. “I appreciate more than anyone else the frustration at how long the case has taken to resolve and the uncertainty this has caused. I am glad it’s finally over,” Froome said.

That is something roads of France — having you deal with in the moment. already had urine thrown at Hopefully that doesn’t interhim a few years ago when fere with the race.” Grand Numbers he was still emerging as a With one more Tour vicmulti-Tour champion. “Over the years, we (Team tory, Froome will match Sky) have always had a small the record of five shared by
Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Hinault and Miguel Indurain. Lance Armstrong won seven Tour titles before he was stripped of them all for doping. Froome can also become the first rider since the late Marco Pantani in 1998 to achieve the Giro-Tour double in the same season. Rivals The list of Froome’s rivals has grown. Colombian climbing specialist Nairo Quintana has surrounded himself with two title candidates in their own right in Mikel Landa and Alejandro Valverde on the Movistar team. “It’s probably the best squad I’ve had by my side for a Grand Tour,” said Quintana, a three-time podium finisher in the Tour. “We’ve got to take advantage of that strength in numbers to chase the victory.” Then there’s 2014 champion Vincenzo Nibali, Dutch time trial expert Tom Dumoulin, Froome’s former teammate Richie Porte, French hope Romain Bardet, last year’s
runner-up Rigoberto Uran and rising British rider Adam Yates. Cobblestones, Climbs and Time Trials While the team time trial in Stage 3 will shake up the overall classification, the first big individual test should come in Stage 9 in a leg that follows the cobblestoned route of the annual ParisRoubaix classic. Held on the same day — Sunday, July 15 — as the World Cup soccer final, the road to Roubaix takes riders over 15 treacherous cobblestone sections: the highest number since the 1980 Tour, covering nearly 22 kilometers altogether. Then the clockwise route heads down to the Alps and the legendary climb up Alpe d’Huez and more ascents in the Pyrenees before a possibly decisive individual time trial in the penultimate stage in the Basque Country. The Tour concludes July 29 with the usual parade along the Champs-Elysees in Paris.
Wild brawl mars Australia-Philippines basketball game Manila, Philippines (AP) — Basketball’s international governing body has opened disciplinary hearings against Australia and the Philippines after a wild brawl that included Milwaukee Bucks forward Thon Maker broke out in their Basketball World Cup qualifying game Monday. The fight spilled into the area behind the baseline and video showed a chair being thrown at the back of an Australia player either by a fan or member of the Philippines team staff. Former NBA player Andray Blatche, now playing for the Philippines, appeared to throw multiple
punches, while Maker came at a Philippines player with legs flying high as it continued. A total of 13 players were ejected after the melee that began in the third quarter of Australia’s 89-53 victory following a collision in the lane. The game continued with just three players from the Philippines. Anthony Moore, chief executive of Australian basketball, apologized to fans in a statement, adding that “this is not the spirit in which sport should be played and certainly not in the spirit in which we aim to play basketball.”

Jazz rides birdie blitz to victory at Queen’s Cup Young Thai talent Jazz Janewattananond took advantage of a hot streak to close with a four-under-par 67 to seal a solid four-shot victory at the Asian Tour endorsed Queen’s Cup in Pattaya last Sunday. After trading one birdie against two bogeys to turn in 37, Janewattananond fired
five straight birdies from the 10th to pull away from the pack before reeling in four closing pars for a winning total of 19-under-par 265 at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club. Janewattananond, who was trailing by one shot at the turn, sparked his hot run with a chip-in birdie from 11
yards on the 10th. The 22year-old Thai bounced back from a wayward tee shot on the next with a brilliant approach from the trees which left him a one-footer for birdie. He went on to make a seven-footer on the 12th, drain a long 24-feet uphill putt on 13th and nail an eight-footer on 14th to cap
Records tumble as Pattaya Cricket Club achieve improbable victory An incredible day of cricket at the sweltering Thai Polo Ground last weekend saw Pattaya Cricket Club chase down a record breaking total against the Southerners to claim the most improbable win in the Eastern Seaboard Cricket League. The Southerners captain, Nadeem, had no hesitation in batting first when winning the toss and under a baking sun and on a hard, flat wicket the PCC bowlers knew it could be a long afternoon. Early control from Andy Emery and Wezley Masterton restricted the Southerners to just 25 runs from the opening 5 overs. PCC made the breakthrough as Nishanth had Elder (15) caught behind with the score on 34, but Anil (17) ran well before he was adjudged lbw to Mo, making his PCC debut. Andrew Langhorn and the surprise Southerners debutant Pathan then went on a scoring festival as anything with width or full length were dispatched to all parts. Andy Emery returned to be unceremoniously launched for 34 runs from his 6 balls as both batsmen passed 50. Andrew was finally bowled by
Wezley for an excellent 76 but Pathan continued the onslaught as he brought up his century from only 41 balls. It was an innings of sensational clean hitting that enabled the Southerners to finish on 235/4 from their 25 overs and left many PCC bowlers with sore necks and bemused looking faces. The run chase had to be positive from the start and Manik and Wezley ensured PCC got off to a near perfect start. Maximising the power play both batsmen found the boundary regularly as the score raced to 102 without loss from the opening 8 overs. Exhaustion was a significant threat and particularly as Manik had kept wicket the Southerners were always
confident a mistake would be made. But the batsmen were in no mood to give up their wickets as the runs continued to flow despite fielders now patrolling the boundary. Both passed 50 and at the drinks break after 14 overs the score was a remarkable 162/0. Finally, Manik was bowled for a masterful 73 but the 187 partnership was a club and league record and put PCC in complete control of the game. Wezley agonisingly missed out on a deserved hundred as he was caught on the long off boundary for a wonderful 94 runs. Mo (14no) and the PCC captain Simon Philbrook (17) guided PCC to victory with 6 balls to spare to record a truly astonishing 5 wicket victory and the PCC barmy army, led by the vociferous Bob St Alben, revelled in the spectacle. Wezley was rightly awarded the man of the match trophy and the win secures second place in the ESCL with just two remaining fixtures left, the next of which is on Sunday, July 22 at the Thai Polo Ground when the top spot beckons.

Janewattananond made up for the disappointment of finishing runner-up last year with this victory which saw him take home a winner’s prize purse of US$54,000 and
receive a total of 14 Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar battled to a 71 to take second place while American Sihwan Kim and Pavit Tangkamolprasert of Thailand shared third place on 270 following respective rounds of 70 and 71.
“I got off to a slow start today. I was a bit shaky, made some bogeys there. The turning point came after I chipped it in on the 10th hole,” said Janewattananond. “I felt like my game just came back after that. It wasn’t easy out there today. I am just happy to come out on top. It feels very good to win at home and with my parents watching me win as well.” Janewattananond will be making his Major debut at The Open at Carnoustie later this month. He earned the coveted spot after finishing tiedfourth at the season-opening SMBC Singapore Open in January, which was part of The Open Qualifying Series. “I came here with the mindset of putting my game in good shape for The Open later this month. I did more than that. To be able to win this week is a bonus. It has definitely helped to boost my confidence,” said the young Thai star. (Source: Asian Tour)

British GP this weekend Three Grands Prix on the trot with the third being the British GP to be held at Silverstone, the site of the first F1 GP in 1950. Silverstone is built on the site of a World War II Royal Air Force bomber station, RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943. The airfield’s three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track. Silverstone was first used for motorsport by an ad hoc group of friends who set up an impromptu race in September 1947. One of their members, Maurice Geoghegan, lived in nearby Silverstone village and was aware that the airfield was deserted. He and eleven other drivers raced over a two-mile circuit, during the course of which Geoghegan himself ran over a sheep that had wandered onto the airfield. The sheep was killed and the car written off, and in the aftermath of this event the informal race became known as the Mutton Grand Prix. The next year the Royal Automobile Club took a lease on the airfield and set out a more formal racing circuit. Their first two races were held on the runways themselves, with long straights separated by tight hairpin corners, the track demarcated by hay bales. However, for the 1949 International Trophy meeting, it was
Silverstone Grand Prix circa 1950. decided to switch to the perimeter track. This arrangement was used for the 1950 and 1951 Grands Prix. In 1952 the start line was moved from the Farm Straight to the straight linking Woodcote and Copse corners, and this layout remained largely unaltered for the following 38 years. For the 1975 meeting a chicane was introduced to try to tame speeds through the mighty Woodcote Corner and Bridge Corner was subtly rerouted in 1987. The track underwent a major redesign between the 1990 and 1991 races, transforming the ultra-fast track (where in its last years every corner was taken in no lower than fourth or fifth gear, depending on the transmission of the car, except for the Bridge chicane, which was usually taken in second gear) into a more technical track. The reshaped track’s first F1 race was perhaps the most memorable of recent years, with Nigel Mansell coming home
first in front of his home crowd. On his victory lap back to the pits Mansell even found time to pick up stranded rival Ayrton Senna and give him a lift on his side-pod after Senna’s McLaren had run out of fuel on the final lap of the race. Following the deaths of Senna and fellow Grand Prix driver Roland Ratzenberger at Imola in 1994, many Grand Prix circuits were modified in order to reduce speed and increase driver safety. As a consequence of this the entry from Hangar Straight into Stowe Corner was modified in 1995 so as to make its entry less dangerous. In addition, the flat-out Abbey kink was modified to a chicane in just 19 days before the 1994 GP. Parts of the circuit, such as the starting grid, are 17 meters wide, complying with the latest safety guidelines. The GP starts on Sunday at 8.10 p.m. Thai time. I watch in front of the big screen at Jameson’s Irish Pub. Come and join me.
Is Liberty on the right track? Will the thought of another US track enthuse the viewing public? I doubt it very much as the new owners of F1 Liberty Media look upon F1 in a different way, compared to what we were used to. When F1’s commercial boss Sean Bratches was asked about the likelihood of there being another race in the US in Miami, he replied,
“I don’t know if there’s a city on the planet that aligns with our brand more than Miami. We’re both about celebrity, about glamour, about fashion, we’re about art, we’re about digital, technology. We both have great sporting histories, so we think it’s a good brand alignment.” Formula 1 is not about celebrity, glamor, fashion and
art. Sorry Mr Bratches, F1 is about mano a mano competition, driver skill, cheating death and doing maneuvers in cars that leaves ‘ordinary’ drivers aghast. Liberty may indeed get Miami off the ground, but Silverstone has said they are pulling out after the 2019 GP. Let’s see what Liberty can do with 68 years of F1 history.
Natter Nosh and Noggin The Pattaya car club meets at Jameson’s Irish Pub on Soi AR next to Nova Park. The next meeting is on Monday July 9 at Jameson’s at 7 p.m. A totally informal meeting of like-minded souls

Volvo has announced that the Swedish automaker, which is owned by Geely in China, will build its S60 luxury midsized sedan in Charleston, South Carolina, where it will be built exclusively for global consumption. It will be built at a new $1.5 billion factory due to open later this year, becoming the first Volvo car to be built in the United States. With diesel now becoming a four letter word, Volvo has dropped the diesel from the engines available leaving both ICE and plug-in hybrids. The powertrain line-up is expected to start with the 183 kW front-wheel-drive turbo-petrol T5 that reputedly can take the S60 from zero to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and delivers fuel consumption of between 7.2 and 8.1 liters per 100 km. A supercharged version of the 2.0-liter engine, producing 228 kW of power, motivates the mid-range T6 via all four wheels. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the T6 Twin Engine combines the four-cylinder petrol engine with a 65 kW electric motor for a total of 253 kW. The top-of-the-range T8 Twin Engine offers 298 kW of
Volvo S60. power from its petrol-electric AWD powertrain for a 0-100 km/h time of 4.9s. Built on Volvo’s modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) that also underpins the V60 and other new-gen Volvo models, S60 has the same dimensions as the V60 – 4761 mm long, 2040 mm wide and 1431 mm high – which makes it longer, wider and lower than the current model that is now eight years old. As expected with a Volvo car, the S60 has high levels of safety, including autonomous braking that now includes automatic braking to mitigate head-on collisions. The S60 gets the latest version of the company’s semiautonomous Pilot Assist system that, like Tesla’s Autopilot, provides a modicum
of steering, throttle and braking assistance on well-marked roads at up to 130 km/h. Other safety technologies include rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking. The infotainment system with its tablet-style screen gets Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G connectivity. Volvo took the opportunity of the S60 launch to show off its nearly completed South Carolina factory that will not only build the S60 for the world but, from 2021, the next-generation XC90 large SUV. The factory joins other plants in Europe and China in Volvo’s growing network of production facilities funded largely by its Chinese parent Geely which bought Volvo from Ford in 2010.
What did we learn from the Austrian GP? A lot to learn from the Austrian Grand Prix. Main items included both Mercedes cars not finishing through mechanical maladies and no longer bullet proof, Renault engines going pop in a Renault, Daniel Ricciardo’s birthday cake had his candles blown out and Romaine Grosjean not only finished but well into the points while Kimi outscored Vettel both in Qualifying and the race. This was the most interesting race so far this year, but with six non-finishers the teams are working flat out to correct the problems. With only one week between the French GP and the Austrian and the British GP this weekend there is very little time to fix anything. The race began with Hamilton getting past Bottas at the first corner while Raikkonen (Ferrari) also squeezed in front of Bottas relegating him to third. By the third lap Kimi was wildly driving on and off the track trying to get past Hamilton, but to no avail. Behind the leaders, there was much action and passing (at long last) but Renault’s Hulkenberg’s engine let go in a big way, followed by Bottas being forced to stop with gear selection hydraulics problems. A Virtual Safety Car period produced almost every car dashing into the pits as the
tyres were not lasting in the heat. Red Bull and Ferrari even double stacking their cars, but Mercedes did not, as their strategist felt Hamilton could safely continue. Unfortunately for Mercedes he was wrong, leaving a petulant Hamilton complaining loudly, not that it mattered for his car sputtered to a stop when the fuel pump failed on lap 62. The next big mover to fail to continue to proceed was Birthday Boy Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) with another Renault engine failure. This left Verstappen (Red Bull) in front of the two Ferraris, who by clever driving managed to keep his blistered rear tyres intact and run to the finish and top step of the podium, clear of Kimi and Vettel. Grosjean (Haas) finished in 4 th with his team mate Magnussen behind him. The two FIndias (Ocon and Perez) were next with Alonso, once again, dragging the hopeless McLaren into an 8th. The Sauber renaissance continues with Leclerc and Ericsson last
two in the points. By this stage, the teams are looking to who should fill the 2019 seats. It would seem that Raikkonen and Grosjean could miss the guillotine after all, but Hartley is a doubtful starter for next year. Autotrivia Quiz Last week I asked, why was there very little traffic on the roads on Sunday in Switzerland in 1923? That was an easy one – the Swiss government banned all traffic on the roads on Sundays, other than doctors and vets. So to this week. With all the conflict in the world today, soon you will need an armored car to drive to work. Would you be happy to drive a forward-firing M1895 Colt-Browning machine gun
with armored shield between the front wheel and steering tiller, operated by the front passenger? What was this car? For a free beer at the next car Club meeting (July 9 at Jamesons Irish Pub), be the first correct answer to email automania@pattayamail.com or viacars@gmail.com. And in addition, if you are a Pattaya resident, the closest correct answer will win a free voucher for Casa Pascal’s Breakfast BBQ. Good luck!

visited the school on several occasions, the first time being over thirty years ago. Upon arrival at the school in North Pattaya, Her Royal Highness was welcomed by Father Michael Picharn Jaiseri, C.Ss.R. As Vice President of the Father Ray Foundation, Father Michael welcomed the distinguished guest on behalf of the faculty, the students and those friends and supporters who had gathered for the ceremony. It is always an honour for the students at the school to welcome distinguished guests. Her Royal Highness was aware that the majority of students were unable to see her, so she took time to meet with the students privately, away from the cameras and crowds, and while they could not see her, they were able to listen to her words as she offered them advice and encouragement. The students now have a purpose built library, complete with a vast selection of books in the Braille format, both in Thai and English. It also has machines so the students can listen to audio books, and others that magnify words on a page so that visually impaired students can read them. The library is run a by a totally blind former student who arrived at the school as a four year old and is now twenty two years of age. He is one of hundreds of young children who came to the school to be educated and who are now leading an independent life.

Taco House comes to the Dark side Much ink devoted to the news that the American chain Taco Bell is opening up in Bangkok; however, the people in Pattaya don’t need to drive to the capital, we have our own Taco House on Pornpranimit (AKA Siam Country Club Road) which is a lot closer than any place in Bangkok.
more). Some of the heritage can be seen with five large screen TV’s for sports and the sit-up bar. Taco House is very easy to find. Come down Siam Country Club Road from the crossroads, known as Chicken Cross Roads by the locals, and Soi 28 Pornpranimit is on your right about two
facilities and they were sparkling clean. The menu begins with beers, local ones B. 70 but craft beers obviously more. Soft drinks B. 30, juices B. 70 as kids are welcome too. The menu proper begins with explanations of their seven different salsas with chili indicators. At the foot of the pages are photos of the various dishes, so those not au fait with Tex-Mex can get a handle on what is on offer. This is something all restaurants should do. Not all customers speak English!
quesadillas (B. 170-210), the spectacular fajitas (B. 249 veggies, up to chicken and beef), burritos (B. 230-260). There is even an entry for American Favorites, mainly burgers B. 210-290. Kids are catered for with their own menu B.100-120 with chicken tenders and hot dogs on offer. The Dining Out Team went for lunch on a Sunday and there were already two tables with what sounded like Mexican accents. Madame ordered a bacon cheese quesadilla while I selected a beef taco with salsa on the Dos senoritas to serve you.
A sign you cannot miss. So where is it? Until recently it had been host to several different restaurants. It began with a Turkish flavor, then becoming O’Neil’s, to be then taken over by the Retox group which moved further down the road. After another make-over it has now become a Tex-Mex (and

The restaurant has been divided into a 24 seat front section (air conditioned of course) and another air-con private section seating around 20 persons for seminars, meetings or birthdays. I had need to visit the toilet Classical bacon/cheese quesadillas. Starters (B. 90-190) include quesadillas, tortillas and tostadas.

side. Both were good servings and our pick was the quesadilla with the molten cheese inside, almost like a double pizza with the one on the top upside down. My three tacos were excellent too, but I always seem to drop more than I eat. It was a huge plateful however, with even more for me to spill. If you are a fan of Tex-Mex, give this place a try. If you are new to the cuisine the friendly staff will assist you in the choices available. We had been a couple of times before and the high standards have been maintained.
Taco House is looking for your business and after our review I am sure they will do it very successfully. Active with their promotions there is a 10 flavor margarita bar coming plus even 500 baht lucky draws each month, and if you are worried about plastic straws they have plant based straws as well. Taco House, 78/3 Moo 2 Pornpranimit (Siam Country Club) corner Soi 28, tel. 098 827 3725, open six days (closed Mondays) 12 noon until 9.30 p.m. On-street parking plus restaurant forecourt.

Pork steak, neither beaten not stirred A confusing title to this week’s recipe, but the result is positively delicious. This can be cooked with beef steaks, but the extra expense is not worth it. The cheaper pork steaks are just as good, as well as saving you money.
Cooking method Place steaks on a grill about medium-slow coals. Cook for about 8 minutes on each side. Do not overcook. Meanwhile, stir together remaining ingredients in a small bowl. Brush steaks with sauce and continue cooking 5 minutes more, turning and brushing with sauce. The cooking can be done in a heavy skillet if you wish, but put a light coat of cooking oil in the skillet first. Use your favorite mustard, but not too strong or the mustard will overpower the flavor. Serve with rice or mashed potato. Ingredients Serves 4 Pork blade steaks, 2 to 3 cm thick 4 Bottled barbecue sauce 1/2 cup Honey 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce 1 tbspn Garlic salt 1 tspn Prepared mustard 1/2 tspn
