Patcharapol Panrak Sattahip residents prayed for the spirits of a young couple gunned down at the foot of Buddha Mountain and for the capture of their alleged killer. District ChiefAnucha Intasorn joined Sangkarak Pongsiri Papatsaro, chairman of the Khao Ploy Dharma Retreat, police, Sattahip Red Cross volunteers and the public for the Aug. 10 merit-making ceremony. Anucha said the entire Khao Chee Chan community
was horrified at the brazen daytime murders of 20-year-old Paveena Namuangrak and Anantachai Jaritrum, 21, on July 29, allegedly by fugitive Phuket bar owner Panya Yingang and five accomplices. All the accused accomplices are now in custody, but Panya is believed to have escaped to Cambodia. The alleged 43-year-old mastermind killed the young woman, a former teen beauty queen who began working in his Phuket go-go bar at age 16, because she refused
to be his mistress and he wrongly assumed Anantachai was her boyfriend. Nine local monks were invited to the ceremony to chant “Buddhajayamangala” (“The Buddha’s Auspicious Victories”) to rid the holy site of the bad luck emanating from their killings. Najomtien police chief Pol. Col. Atorn Chinthong said he has ordered more random checkpoints and patrols for the Khao Chee Chan area to instill confidence in tourists and protect their safety.
Demolition orders have been issued for 16 houses that have been homes to Naklua residents for 20 years after Pattaya declared they were built on public land. City engineers posted nine more tear-down orders on houses on Soi Photisan 6 on Aug 7, two days after the first seven orders were issued. Another four are expected to be served within coming days. Thippachai Rattanaveeratavorn, protection of public areas chief, said that while the homes have been occupied for two decades, the owners knew they were built on public land. Ignored by past elected officials, the land is being reclaimed by Pattaya’s military-appointed leaders.

A work crew cleaned up the busy street from Soi 4 to Dongtan Beach Aug. 9. The street had been polluted by water that ran out of the bottom of public trash cans and backed up out of sewers after recent rains. The entire beachfront reeked like a landfill. City officials urged people to separate their waste from recyclables and dispose of garbage properly so it doesn’t create trash stew when it rains.

Chonburi dengue cases up 31%, Pattaya 2nd most cases Warapun Jaikusol Already declared a red zone for dengue fever, the Pattaya area already has seen 31% more cases reported this year than in all of 2015, the last time the
number of cases reached a critical level. The Banglamung Health Department told an Aug. 4 meeting of the district’s village health volunteers that 46,000 cases have been reported in Chonburi Province this year, compared with 35,000 in all of 2015. More than 50,000 total cases are expected by year-end. Banglamung and Pattaya have the second-most reported cases, the department noted. First is Koh Sichang while third place is held by Ban Bung. The health department said it is aggressively working to destroy breeding grounds for the disease-carrying Aedes mosquito and instructed village volunteers to tour their neighbors twice weekly to put abate in water sources.

Municipal enforcement chief Pol. Maj. Thara Warajang, 35, and his lawyer met Aug. 9 with Banglamung police chief Pol. Col. Jukthip Parapantasakul to file the complaint against his ex-wife’s relatives, who, along with police and soldiers, beat and punched him in the face. The brawl came after Thara’s ex, Pavita Pongphan, allegedly told the Banglamung government complaint center that Thara was a drug dealer. Then she and soldiers showed up at Pattaya School No. 6 to take custody of her two children. It wasn’t the first time Pavita had tried this, Thara told police. She has many police friends and several times enlisted them to help kidnap the children. All the attempts failed. He now eats lunch with his children every day to prevent kidnappings.

One of the gawkers in the crowd pulled out their mobile phone and posted four minutes of the confrontation online, showing a fight breaking out and Thara getting beat up

He and Thara then visited the district’s complaint center, which denied taking a report from Pavita. They said she probably made a verbal complaint to military friends, who intervened on her behalf.

The two victims were walking back to their car July 29 when Panya and Narong allegedly confronted them. Police say Narong shot the young woman four times – twice in the head – and Panya shot
Anatachai twice in the head. Panya, 43, is believed to be hiding out in a Cambodia village near the Sa Kaeo border. Police say he was infatuated with the young woman who began working as a go-go dancer in his Phuket bar when she was just 16, but refused his advances. Thai official says child bride has returned from Malaysia Bangkok (AP) - An 11year-old Thai girl who married a 41-year-old Malaysian man has been sent back to Thailand from Malaysia, a senior Thai welfare official said. The official at the Social Development and Human Security Ministry said the girl, whose situation was made public in June, has been put under the care of the ministry. Witat Techaboon, directorgeneral of the ministry’s Department of Children and Youth, said he could not provide any other details because the topic is sensitive. The Malaysian newspaper The Star, citing a Thai social activist that it did not name, said officials of Malaysia’s Kelantan state sent the girl to Thailand on August 8.
The case produced calls in both Malaysia and Thailand for strengthening laws against child marriage. Rubber scrap dealer Che Abdul Karim Che Abdul Hamid is believed to have secretly married the girl - a Thai citizen who lives with her parents in Malaysia - as his third wife in Thailand. Holding a Muslim wedding ceremony in Thailand skirted Thai and Malaysian marriage laws. Muslim girls under the minimum legal marriage age of 16 can wed with the consent of the Islamic Shariah court and their parents in Malaysia. Muslim men in Malaysia can marry four wives. Thai law sets the minimum legal age for marriage at 17, though courts may allow marriage of younger individuals if there is an appropriate
reason. The reasons, however, are not defined in the law. Che Abdul Karim in July was fined RM1,800 ($440) by a Malaysian Shariah court for marrying a minor without its prior consent and taking an additional wife without permission from his other spouses. He earlier told Malaysia’s Bernama news agency that his marriage was lawful and had been approved by the girl’s parents, who are Thai citizens who live and work in Kelantan as rubber tappers. He said he would only formalize the marriage in Malaysia when the girl turned 16 and that she would stay with her parents until then. The girl was quoted by local media as saying she loves Che Abdul Karim because he is a kind man.

The holiday commemorates the day he died. Rapee was born Oct. 21, 1874 and studied law at Christchurch College at Oxford University. Upon returning to Thailand he became minister of justice at the age of 22, a position he held for 14 years. After founding the law school in 1897 he drew
up the first syllabus and taught the students himself. In 1911, King Rama VI appointed Rapee agriculture minister. In addition to standardizing land ownership, he created the Royal Irrigation Department. The prince fell ill in 1920 and resigned to move to Paris. He died Aug. 7 the same year. His statue was constructed in front of the Ministry of Justice and each year law practitioners and the general public who now live under the law he once wrote pay tribute to him.

Boys rescued from cave, once stateless, get Thai citizenship Kaweewit Kaewjinda Bangkok (AP) - Three young soccer players and their coach who were rescued with other teammates after almost three weeks in a flooded cave were granted Thai citizenship last week. All four had been stateless, and their lack of citizenship deprived them of some basic benefits and rights, including the ability to travel outside of Chiang Rai, the
northern province where they live. The area is home to ethnic minorities with roots in neighboring Myanmar. In all, 12 boys and their 25year-old coach were trapped by the flooding until their dramatic rescue by Thai navy SEALs and other experienced divers that concluded July 10. Nopparat Kanthawong, the head coach of the Wild Boars team, said the four received official Thai ID cards along
with another teammate who had not been in the cave but also applied for citizenship. “I’m happy,” he said. “I want to say that football can elevate the lives of kids whose families may not be in the best position.” “If they have Thai citizenship, in the future, if they don’t want to play football they can take exams to become public officials or find good work that is related to their field of studies,” he said.
Activists mark 30th anniversary of Myanmar uprising Grace Brown & Min Kyi Thein Yangon, Myanmar (AP) Hundreds of people on Wednesday, Aug. 8, commemorated the 30th anniversary of Myanmar’s 8888 uprising, a seminal and ultimately bloody episode in the Southeast Asian nation’s struggle for democracy. The flag of the uprising - a fighting peacock - flew on the campus and in a hall of Yangon University, where activists including those who took part in the mass revolt heard speeches and viewed exhibits that recalled the events. The Aug. 8, 1988, uprising came after more than a quarter of a century of military rule and international isolation that had condemned once-prosperous Myanmar - then called Burma - to poverty. More than 1 million people are estimated to have protested throughout the country, driven to take to the streets after the government’s sudden demonetization of the country’s currency, which wiped out many people’s savings. The revolt dislodged longtime dictator Ne Win but was violently crushed by the army in the weeks that followed. Estimates of the number of deaths range as high as 3,000. Although an equally repressive set of generals took over, the events also marked the founding of the pro-democracy movement of

Aung San Suu Kyi, which finally took power peacefully in 2016, although under a restrictive constitution that forced it to share power with the military. Many of the leading figures of the 1988 uprising are still active in political and social work, and several on Wednesday recalled the momentous historical events and how they started. “Suddenly, someone put out the student flag, which had been hidden under his shirt, and waved it,” recounted former student protest leader and 88 Generation activist Min Ko Naing. “At the same time, another person brought a bamboo stick to the fence and tied that flag to the top. All the rest started chanting and waving their posters.” All of a sudden, the demonstration had begun, he recalled, adding that it had been “born in our hearts” many years before.
Along with hundreds of others, Min Ko Naing was arrested in the army takeover that followed. He spent approximately 19 years behind bars before finally being released in 2012 during a mass pardon of political prisoners. An exhibition inside the university showed in detail what took place in 1988. People young and old stopped to read carefully preserved archives of journals and newspapers, hanging like ornaments. Members of the 88 Group, an association of protest veterans, also showed visitors how word spread to the streets in the pre-internet era, relying on foreign radio stations including Voice of America and BBC. Using simple manual printing techniques, transcripts of the broadcasts were shared in quiet teashops from Yangon to Mandalay, the traditional venues for gossip and discussion.

Nopparat said he submitted documentation on August 8 to help apply for citizenship for seven other Wild Boar players who are stateless. The boys given citizenship in their home district of Mae Sai had all applied for it before the cave incident, and
all were fully qualified for the change in status, said district chief Somsak Kanakam. “There are many people who are born in Thailand but haven’t received citizenship yet,” he said, adding that residents seeking Thai nation a l i t y s h o u l d a p ply quickly, while he still holds
his job, because he has “no corrupt intentions”. He said that most people present at last week’s ceremony were aware of under-the-table payments that some officials had asked for in the past. There are 488,105 stateless people registered in Thailand, according to government statistics. The actual number could be as high as 3.5 million, according to the International Observatory on Statelessness. The group says stateless people in Thailand are unable to vote, buy land, seek legal employment, work in certain occupations or travel freely. Northern Thailand, whose porous borders have long been a boon to migrants, refugees and smugglers, is a melting pot of ethnic groups, including the Akha, Lahu, Lisu, Yao, Shan, Hmong and Karen. In neighboring Myanmar, the frontier regions are dominated by ethnic minority groups, but underdevelopment and conflict make opportunities scarce. Some people flee for their lives to Thailand; others just seek a better life.
Thai monk who flew in high style gets prison for fraud Kaweewit Kaewjinda Bangkok (AP) - A former Buddhist monk infamous for a jet-set lifestyle was sentenced last week to more than 100 years in prison in connection with funds he fraudulently raised from followers. Wirapol Sukphol caused a scandal when he appeared in a 2013 YouTube video in his monk’s robes aboard a private jet wearing aviator sunglasses with a Louis Vuitton carry-on by his side. He was defrocked amid accusations that he had sexual relations with several women - a major violation of the precepts guiding monks’ behavior - and had impregnated one. There were also allegations he had sex with a 14year-old girl. Because of the furor, he fled to the United States, where he was arrested in 2016 and extradited last year. The Ratchada Criminal Court in Bangkok sentenced him to 114 years in prison, although legal technicalities capped the actual time he must serve at 20 years. He was found guilty of fraud, money laundering and violation of the computer crime act for spending money he had solicited for Buddhist statuary and temple improvements instead on cars and luxury goods. The court also ordered that Wirapol pay 28.6 million baht ($864,000) in

compensation to 29 people who filed lawsuits saying he had cheated them. The same court will deliver a verdict on Oct. 17 on a child molestation and child abduction case against Wiraphol. Critics say Wirapol is an extreme example of a wider crisis in Thai Buddhism, which has become marginalized by a shortage of monks and an increasingly secular society. At the court, a smiling Wirapol was joined by around 10 followers whom he told to relax. “Prison is comfortable, there are people always buying you food and there’s plenty of space. Anyone want to join me?” Wirapol
said. “If I have to spend many years in prison but can accept it, then it’s comfortable. If you can’t accept it, just one day in prison can feel like a thousand years.” The court’s decision noted an earlier civil court ruling that ordered the confiscation of 43.5 million baht ($1.3 million) from Wirapol. According to Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation, Wirapol at one point had accumulated assets estimated at 1 billion baht ($30.1 million). During a shopping spree from 2009 to 2011, he bought 22 Mercedes Benz cars worth 95 million baht ($2.9 million), the department said.

Time lapse photography? Easy
The camera is one of the most fantastic pieces of equipment to record change. A tangible, visible record of something caught suspended in time forever. With its (and our) unique abilities, we can then repeat that record of the same “something” at regular intervals. That is simply known as time lapse photography. I am sure that everyone has seen the sequences of a flower opening, or a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Those of you who may have seen a rather avant-garde movie called “A Zed and two Noughts” will remember the time lapse work that was done there. For those who
have not seen it, the time lapse was of the decomposition of human bodies. But you do not need to restrict yourself to doing serial shots (that is not pictures of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes! Sorry about the pun) at one second intervals, or even hourly intervals. There is one famous photographer who has now been doing serial nude self-portraits on her birthday for the past thirty years. The results, that some people might find depressing, are actually now being studied by the medical profession, being the only “scientific” study of aging that has ever been done. I believe that this is truly a work of art, never mind the medical significance. So what sort of work can you do for a time lapse photography project? While the annual shot approach is very commendable, I personally do not have the patience to take one shot and wait
Dear Hillary, My ex has bobbed up again from somewhere. Last I heard she was in the States, but that was five years ago. There was lots of bad blood during the divorce so it knocked me off my perch when she bowls in just as if she was coming back from the shops. I haven’t got a permanent replacement, though to be honest she put me off women. Not that I’m into guys either. I said she could stay for a couple of weeks, and that was three weeks ago. What do I do next? Jeremy Dear Jeremy, Why did she leave you? Was it because you could never make up your mind, my Petal? Show her the door and ask her to close it on the way out. If it’s company you want, buy a dog. Dear Hillary, Another Thai GF I fear. Moved in a month ago and she’s never there. Out every night, rolls back in 2 or 3 or sometimes even later. Reeking of cheap whisky. Asleep when I leave to go to work in the morning. All lovey dovey when I get back in the afternoon and we go out for a meal, then she nafs off again. Do they all do this? Barry Dear Barry, You didn’t say how old you were, but I’ll guess that her age is late teens. You are just being used. Show her the door. Another one who needs a dog. The pound has got hundreds of them.
twelve months to take the next one! Short attention span is a family trait! No, pick something that can allow you to produce a finished product in the sort of time frame that you could sit comfortably with. Here is one suggestion buy a rose (they sell them in all bars every night) and place it in a vase by the window and shoot it at lunchtime. Leave it exactly where it is, and take one lunchtime shot every day for the next week. In that time, it will have
spread its petals, begin to die, the petals will shrink up, the stem will bend over, the water will have gone cloudy and other attributes that will only become obvious when you study the shots. However, to capitalize on this you must mount the shots, side by side, in order from the left. You have just produced a work of art in a week! So you haven’t got the stamina for a week. What else can you do? Well, there is always the record of one object in daylight. Take
Dear Hillary, I see a lot of girls in my local shopping center, and many are quite nice. I see them resting on the seats. I know you say we older farangs should stay away from the bars, but will I find Miss Right in the shopping center? Or do I have to lie about my age (I’m a pensioner) and go back to university? What should I do? I’m getting tired of being lonely. Lonely Larry Dear Lonely Larry, What shower did you come down in, my lonely Petal? Must have been the last one. Will you find Miss Right waiting on the bench for you at the supermarket? No Larry, you will only find Miss Take there. Mistake if you talk to her and Miss Take all your money by the time you reach the checkout counter. These are freelance girls who can disappear very easily and you will never find where she went or came from (other than Aisle B next to the hot dog counter). At least Hello Sexy Man bar will still be there tomorrow, and the Mamasan knows the ID of her girls. As far as lying about your age, that’s not such a bad idea. I heard of one 70 year old chap, when seen walking down the street with a cute 17 year old, told his friends it was easy. “I lied about my age. I told her I was 90!” If you are getting really desperate, talk to the girls in the optical stores. They are all well dressed and university graduates. You must be needing glasses at your age, so you’ve got a good excuse for being there. Don’t despair, Larry. Just be nice to everyone you meet. Very
your shots, one every two hours, of your house, for example, starting at 6 a.m. You will see how the different time of day produces different light, the sun’s movement produces different shadows and again, by mounting them side by side, in order from the left, you will have produced a work of art in one day! By the way, the reason that they must be mounted in order from the left is that the eye is trained to scan from the left, not from the right
(unless you come from some of the Arabic countries). So you don’t want to spend a day getting your definitive time lapse shots (you’re getting close to my idea now), so look at taking one hour. In that time you can document the progress of a snail along a wall, or serial shots of people walking down the street, your son painting a wall or the magical way your beer glass empties. The last one sounds the best I think. Just light it from behind with natural lighting to get the best effect. Probably I would suggest that you repeat this a few times over a Sunday afternoon, just to make sure you’ve really got all the shots correct. Wouldn’t want to miss one. The next day, take a shot of two aspirins before you swallow them with a glass of water and mount the serial beer glass shots side by side and then the two aspirins as the final one. Now that really is a work of art!
soon someone will snap you up for whom you are, and not just to get their hands on your pension. Dear Hillary, I am a single, mature English lady who has lived in Pattaya for 3 months, why is it that you don’t see white ladies out with young Thai men, there are lots of old and young white men out with their Thai ladies or Thai men for the evening, but not the other way round. I know you can visit male gogo bars and get a handsome man for the evening but where do white ladies take their handsome Thai men, is it because Thai men don’t like to be seen out with white ladies? I would love to take a handsome Thai man out for a meal, a drink and dancing, and I’m sure there must be plenty of ladies like myself who would love to do this also, so how do I address the balance, any suggestions. Perplexed Dear Perplexed (of Pattaya), Goodness me, my Petal, just where in England are you from? Some strange little village where the height of excitement is the Maypole dances, and that’s only once a year? What is stopping you taking your handsome Thai man anywhere? It certainly is not “because Thai men don’t like to be seen out with white ladies.” On the contrary, Ms Perplexed, in some areas a white English lady would be looked upon as a bit of a prize. I think you have some sort of psychological hang-up, and it is you who is afraid to be seen with a Thai man, not the other way round. As you say, there are plenty of male go-go’s and you don’t even have to go out of that locale to find a nice place to eat. Be brave, and let me know what happened after you took the public plunge! I am quite sure nobody will have thrown nasturtiums, or even aspersions.

PATTAYA MAIL
Beware of cheap meds! A few years ago, I was interviewed by a German TV channel which wanted to show that taking over the counter drugs was a dangerous practice. They had gone to great pains to do some secret filming in Thai suburban pharmacies (of which there are numerous). The drug they wished to highlight was our old friend (or probably better described as the “friend of the old”), the blue diamonds. They had chosen Thailand because so many blue diamonds were being taken here, and they wanted to show the disastrous side effects from taking the fake pills. During the course of the interview I pointed out that Germany has its own very well-known red light areas, so they could save money on plane fares and get the blue diamond statistics much closer to home. I also pointed out that we were not inundated with octogenarians with heart failure and loaded condoms, and “over the counter” (OTC) drugs could be found all over the world, and not just here. It might come as no surprise to those who have an inkling of television “news” that they cut my interview out of the feature. Do not forget the journalist’s creed – “Never
let the truth stand in the way of a good story”! So back to counterfeit blue diamonds, how do you find out that yours are real or otherwise? Every day I receive Spam offering me the opportunity to keep a battalion of beauties satisfied. These are the internet email offers of cut-price drugs that will keep me in a state of perpetual priapism, a continuing (and painful) male erection and the term was coined after the Greek god Priapus who is shown in paintings to have a central member like a third leg. Offers like these which are too good to be true, are usually just that – too good to be true! These cut-price drugs are not the real deal. The chances are very high that they are counterfeit. One of the patients showed me a box purporting to be genuine brand name Cialis tablets, which were not having the desired effect. I was immediately suspicious as the box was not all that well printed. I was quite sure they were counterfeit when I read the Patient Information slip (the printed sheet that you don’t read). The English grammar was incorrect, and there were spelling mistakes. Eli Lilly, the ‘real’ manufacturer does not send out misspelled literature with their product.
How real is the threat of counterfeit drugs? The World Health Organization estimates that one in three drugs on the worldwide market today is counterfeit. One in three! Pfizer’s laboratories analyze fakes and stated, “We’ve seen boric acid, heavy metals, road paint, floor wax to coat the pills and give them a shine.” This is actually a serious situation. If specific drugs are only available through pharmacies, on the prescription of a doctor, is it safe to just buy over the internet (or counter), without any doctor’s advice? According to WHO, drugs commonly counterfeited include antibiotics, antimalarials, hormones and steroids. Increasingly, anticancer and antiviral drugs are also faked. And you can add to that, the ‘blue diamonds’. Get your medications on a doctor’s prescription. There is a reason for it. I do know that many of our patients complain that my hospital’s pharmacy is expensive, but that is the price of guaranteeing that your medications are not the WHO’s one in three fake medications in our pharmacy! We may be more expensive, but the medication is the real deal!
Study: Lowering blood pressure helps prevent mental decline - areas of scarring or damage from injury, such as inadequate blood supply. “It matches” the other results on thinking skills and bolsters the evidence that lowering blood pressure helps, said Laurie Ryan, a dementia scientist at the National Institute on Aging.
Marilynn Marchione Chicago (AP) - Lowering blood pressure more than usually recommended not only helps prevent heart problems, it also cuts the risk of mental decline that often leads to Alzheimer’s disease, a major study finds. It’s the first time a single step has been clearly shown to help prevent a dreaded condition that has had people trying crossword puzzles, diet supplements and a host of other things in hope of keeping their mind sharp. In the study, people treated to a top blood pressure reading of 120 instead of 140 were 19 percent less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment. They also had fewer signs of damage on brain scans, and there was a possible trend toward fewer cases of dementia. “This is a big breakthrough,” said Dr. Jeff Williamson of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina. “It’s more important than ever to work with your physician to ensure that you have good blood pressure control.” He led the study and gave results Wednesday at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Chicago. They’re considered preliminary until published, expected later this year. Independent experts cheered the news. “We have long known that high blood pressure is bad for your heart. Now we’re also learning it’s bad for your brain,” said James Hendrix,

director of global science initiatives at the Alzheimer’s Association.
The brain-blood pressure link About 50 million people worldwide have dementia, and Alzheimer’s is the most common type. There is no cure - current medicines such as Aricept and Namenda just ease symptoms - so prevention is key. Roughly half of adults in the United States have high blood pressure under guidelines adopted last year that define it as a top number of 130 or more, rather than 140. Normal is under 120.
High pressure can damage blood vessels and has long been linked to a higher risk for dementia. But it’s not been known if lowering pressure would reduce that risk or by how much. The federally funded study was designed to test this in the most rigorous way.
About the study It involved more than 9,300 people with high pressure. Half got two medicines, on average, to get their top reading below 140. The rest got three drugs, on average, and aimed for 120. During the study, the top pressure averaged 121 in the intensive-treatment group and 135 in the other group. The study was stopped in 2015, nearly two years early, when it became clear that lower pressure helped prevent heart problems and deaths. But tests of thinking skills continued for two more years, and these new results were
revealed on Wednesday. Researchers saw a 19 percent lower risk of mild cognitive impairment, or MCI, in the intensive-treatment group - 285 cases versus 348 in the higher pressure group. About half of people with MCI develop dementia over the next five years. “It’s really more important to prevent MCI than dementia in some ways. It’s like preventing high cholesterol rather than a heart attack,” Williamson said. There also were fewer dementia cases in the intensive-treatment group but there were too few to say lower blood pressure was the reason. Dementia takes longer to develop than mild impairment does, so doctors think the difference may widen over time. MRI scans on 454 participants showed that those in the lower pressure group had less white matter lesions
This study’s previous results led to last fall’s guidelines change, setting high pressure at 130. Some doctors have criticized that as too aggressive, but the new results, showing benefits to the brain, “support and maybe even extend the guidelines,” Williamson said. “The goal of below 130 is extremely important.” The study did not test specific
blood pressure drugs. Instead, each participant’s doctor chose which ones to use from the more than a dozen available. When the heart results were announced a few years ago, doctors said that toolow pressure, fainting episodes and some kidney problems were a little more common in the intensively treated group but that those risks were considered worth the benefits of a lower risk of heart trouble and death. Getting to the lower level meant using one more medicine, and “90 percent of these are generic and cost less than a dollar a day,” Williamson said. “For a modest cost this has a tremendously important health benefit for people.”

Patriots fan turns Tom Brady’s autograph into a tattoo Foxborough, Mass. (AP) - A young Connecticut woman didn’t want to ever lose the autograph she got from Tom Brady. The New England Patriots star signed 19-year-old Megan Uhrynowski’s arm after a practice at Gillette Stadium on Monday night that she had attended with a friend. Uhrynowski, a college student, told WHDH-TV her friend had suggested she turn the autograph into a tattoo. So she did. Uhrynowski went to a tattoo parlor the next day and had the five-time Super Bowl champion’s signature permanently etched on her arm. She said she was “freaking out” when Brady responded to her request to sign her arm during an autograph session with fans, adding: “It was probably like the coolest thing.”

Couple thinks they found Prohibition-era booze in new home Quincy, Mass. (AP) - A couple moving into a Massachusetts home have found what they believe is a stash of Prohibition-era booze. The Patriot Ledger reports that Ian Sutherland and his girlfriend, Alexa Lee, found dozens of dusty glass bottles and clay jugs shelved behind a false wall in their Quincy home. A contractor uncovered the hidden compartment while working in the basement in July after the couple had moved in from Connecticut. Some of the 56 bottles still contain liquid that Sutherland says appears to include beer and moonshine, and that now give off a vinegary smell. The head of the Quincy Historical Society says it’s still too soon to know how long the bottles were hidden. Quincy banned alcohol sales in 1880 amid the temperance movement. The house was built in 1910.
Colorado sheriff urges travelers to lock car in bear country Conifer, Colo. (AP) - Travelers in Colorado are being urged to lock their cars when they’re in bear country. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado posted a video on Facebook that shows what can happen when a car is left unlocked and a bruin smells treats inside. An officer used a rope to open the door and awaken the bear, which seemed to enjoy the food contents of a small station wagon before taking a nap. A half-eaten banana was left behind as the bear ran off into the woods. The sheriff’s office wrote it’s “pawsitively sure” locking the door reduces the chances of losing important items and having a vehicle trashed.

Colorado man fined $1K for repeatedly feeding bears Durango, Colo. (AP) - A Colorado man has been fined $1,000 for intentionally feeding bears for the third time in the past eight years. The Durango Herald reports a resident reported to Colorado Parks and Wildlife that they had seen a man leaving out food in his backyard for bears. Wildlife Manager Matt Thorpe says the resident took pictures and provided them to officials. An investigation found that the man had previously been fined for the same behavior in 2010 and 2012. In Colorado, it’s illegal to knowingly feed bears. The first offense carries a $100 fine. The second violation gives a $500 fine. Thorpe said Colorado Parks and Wildlife contacted the man on Sunday, who paid the fine on the spot. He can be fined another $1,000 if he breaks the law again.

One giant sale: Neil Armstrong’s collection goes to auction Lisa Cornwell Cincinnati (AP) - Admirers of Neil Armstrong and space exploration have a chance to own artifacts and mementos that belonged to the modest man who became a global hero by becoming the first human to walk on the moon. The personal collection of Armstrong, who died in his native Ohio in 2012, will be offered for sale in a series of auctions handled by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, beginning Nov. 1-2 and continuing in May and November 2019. The collection includes a variety of artifacts from Armstrong’s 1969 lunar landing and private mementos that include pieces of a wing and propeller from the 1903 Wright Brothers Flyer that the astronaut took with him to the moon. Other items that went to the moon with Armstrong include a U.S. flag, the largest size typically flown during Apollo missions; a United

Nations flag; various state flags; and some Robbins Medallions. The sterling silver medallions were paid for by the crews of Apollo missions and were available for purchase only by NASA astronauts. Armstrong’s collection also includes a rare gold medallion.
Among the more personal items to be auctioned are a Purdue University centennial flag from Armstrong’s alma mater that traveled on Apollo 11 and his Boy Scout cap. Armstrong’s son, Mark Armstrong, said his father never talked to him about what he wanted done with the large amount of items he kept. “I don’t think he spent much time thinking about it,” Armstrong said. “He did save all the items, so he obviously felt they were worth saving.” Armstrong, who lives in suburban Cincinnati, said his father did keep all of his “flown” items together. Faced with the responsibility of conserving, preserving and insuring irreplaceable items and honoring their father’s legacy, Armstrong and his brother, Rick, found that some things needed restoration, and that some required research to be properly identified. “We felt like the number of people that could help us identify them and give us the

historical context was diminishing and that the problem of understanding that context would only get worse over time,” he said. The Armstrongs turned to Sarasota, Florida-based Collectibles Authentication Guaranty for help with preserving and authenticating
the artifacts and memorabilia and chose Heritage Auctions for the sales. Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auctions, said it handles numerous categories of collectibles that appeal to various collectors, but items connected with space seem to have a universal appeal.
“Space is one of the very, very few categories that every single person seems to be interested in,” Rohan said. “You show somebody something from the space program, and they are fascinated by it.” Bids can be taken online, by phone or in person.
Facebook opens up on vote meddling, but is the shift real? Barbara Ortutay New York (AP) - For a company bent on making the world more open, Facebook has long been secretive about the details of how it runs its social network - particularly how things go wrong and what it does about them. Yet last week, Facebook rushed forward to alert Congress and the public that it had recently detected a small but “sophisticated” case of possible Russian election manipulation. Has the social network finally acknowledged the need to keep the world informed about the big problems it’s grappling with, rather than doing so only when dragged kicking and screaming to the podium? While the unprompted revelation does signal a new, albeit tightly controlled openness for the company, there is still plenty that Facebook isn’t saying. Many experts remain unconvinced that this is a true culture change and not mere window dressing. “This is all calculated very carefully,” said Timothy Carone, a business professor at the University of Notre Dame. He and other analysts noted that Facebook announced its discovery of 32 accounts and pages intended to stir
up U.S. political discord just a week after the company’s stock dropped almost 20 percent - its worst plunge since going public. But Facebook’s proactive disclosure, including a conference call for reporters with chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, struck a markedly different tone from the company’s hamhanded approach to a string of scandals and setbacks over the past two years. That has included: - CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s infamous dismissal of the idea that fake news on Facebook could have influenced the 2016 election as “a pretty crazy idea”; - The company’s foot-dragging as evidence mounted of a 2016 Russian election-interference effort conducted on Facebook and other social-media sites; - Zuckerberg, again, declining for nearly a week to publicly address the privacy furor over a Trump campaign consultant, Cambridge Analytica, that scavenged data from tens of millions of Facebook users for its own election-influence efforts. A chastened Facebook has since taken steps toward transparency, many of them easy to overlook. In April, it published for the first time the detailed guidelines its moderators use to police
(AP Photo/Noah Berger, File)
unacceptable material. It has provided additional, if partial, explanations of how it collects user data and what it does with it. And it has forced disclosure of the funding and audience targeting of political advertisements, which it now also archives for public scrutiny. All of that is in keeping with the image of Facebook that Zuckerberg relentlessly promotes. In his telling, the giant, data-and-ad-driven social network is a force for good in the world that must now reluctantly do battle with “bad actors,” such as Russian agents, who threaten Facebook’s noble mission of “connecting the world.” Solving such problems, in Facebook’s view, is mostly a matter of more investment, more hard work, more hires, and better technology - particularly artificial intelligence.
And Facebook’s newfound passion for openness only goes so far. Of the 32 apparently fake accounts and pages it found, it only released eight to researchers. In a conference call this week, executives declined to characterize the accounts, even in terms of whether they leaned right or left. Facebook left it to researchers at the nonprofit Atlantic Council, a think tank that is helping the company on election interference, to draw those conclusions. Facebook said its timing was motivated by an upcoming protest event in Washington that was promoted by a suspicious page connected to a Russian troll farm, the Internet Research Agency. Several people connected to the IRA have been indicted by the U.S. special counsel for attempting to interfere in the 2016 election.
Despite Zuckerberg’s repeated mantra - delivered to relentless effect in some 10 hours of testimony before Congress in April - that the company now really gets it, some who know the company best have their doubts. David Kirkpatrick, the author of a Facebook history, argues that neither Zuckerberg nor Sandberg have ever shown themselves to be “deeply alarmed in public.” As a result, he suggests, Facebook seems more concerned with managing its image than with solving the actual problem at hand. Such issues run deep for the company. Some of its biggest critics, including former employees such as Sandy Parakilas and early Facebook investor Roger McNamee, say the company needs to revamp its business model from the ground up to see any meaningful change. These critics would like to see Facebook rely less on tracking its users in order to sell targeted advertising, and to cut back on addicting features such as endless notifications that keep drawing people back in. Parakilas, for example, has advocated for a subscription-based model, letting users pay to user Facebook instead of having their data harvested.
Merely hiring more moderators, or hanging hopes on the evolution of artificial intelligence, isn’t going to cut it, in their view. There have also been widespread calls for Facebook to acknowledge that it is, in a sense, a media company, responsible for what happens on its platforms - a characterization the social network has long fought. For all that, Facebook is well ahead of Silicon Valley rivals such as Google and Twitter when it comes to openness - even if only because it’s attracted the lion’s share of criticism, said Paul Levinson, a media studies professor at Fordham University. But Facebook “can’t win at this game,” said Siva Vaidhyanathan, a University of Virginia professor of media studies whose 2018 book “Antisocial Media” critiques Facebook’s effect on democracy and society. Because it’s so huge - 2.2 billion global users and counting - and so difficult to police, he said, “it will always be vulnerable to hijacking and will never completely clean up its content.” Worse, he says, there is no real solution. “It is hopeless,” he said. “The problem with Facebook is Facebook.”

HHN Director Radchada Chomjinda welcomed the ambassador to the Drop-In Center and ASEAN Education Center Aug. 3, with children giving him a boisterous greeting. H.E. Davidson’s delegation observed living conditions and the foundation’s work in helping children of migrant construction workers with transport to 80 sites around
the area, food and education in Thai, Burmese and English. Too often the children would be left alone while their parents work. Self-protection is taught with question cards and modeling conversations with strangers to teach children to learn how to avoid exploitation. Following the tour, the kids performed some ethnic dances for the guests.
Davidson then proceeded to the Pattaya Orphanage where he was greeted by Director Rev. Weera Pangrak. There he took a similar tour and saw how the orphanage cares for its 100 newborns, autistic, special-needs, speech-impaired and deaf children. Davidson said the information gathered will be used in developing a charitable-giving program at the embassy.

Down to Brass Tacks A fine modern reproduction baroque trumpet.
A few evenings ago, someone at the drinking trough was asking how a trumpet can produce so many notes when it has only three valves. It’s a good question. You may recall that a bugle, which has no valves whatsoever, can still produce a sufficient number of notes to perform simple tunes. Of course, it’s all done with the lips. To be more precise, it’s done by blowing into the mouthpiece through nearlyclosed lips. This produces a
“buzzing” effect which causes the air inside the tube to vibrate. The tube and bell act as amplifiers and a musical note is the result. For this reason, musicologists (but not musicians) refer to brass instruments as labrosones which literally means “lipvibrated instruments”. “Well yes”, you might reasonably say, “but where do the different notes come from?” The answer lies in a slightly daunting acoustical concept which occurs in
nature and known as the harmonic series. A friend of mine, who played the trombone, was fond of doing his Garden Hose Trick. Using an ordinary hose cut to about five or six feet in length, he’d stick a trombone mouthpiece into one end and a coneshaped funnel into the other. He would then play a buglelike tune. He was using the notes of the harmonic series. Any tube has a fundamental pitch with its own series of harmonics (sometimes called overtones) though they are normally inaudible unless triggered by vibration. As the lips are tightened and more air pressure is applied the lips vibrate faster. The air in the tube also vibrates faster and triggers a higher note of the harmonic series. With careful control of lip tension a bugle player can produce about half-a-dozen different notes. I admit that I have simplified all this considerably, because I can sense your eyes glazing over. But that’s the gist of it. Like bugles, the earliest trumpets and horns had no valves because they had yet to be invented. The tubes were a fixed length and could use only employ the notes of one particular harmonic series. To access more notes,
the length of the tube had to be changed. The only way was to manually insert an extra bit of tubing (known as a crook) which would increase the length of the instrument and thus lower the pitch. But for hundreds of years it was mechanically impossible to do this instantly. The technology was simply not available. The sackbut, which was the ancestor of the trombone got around the problem by using a slide. It was not until 1818 that a valve design was finally patented. The valves opened extra bits of tubing and thus lowered the pitch of the instrument. By using the valves and valve combination a brass player could produce at least thirty different notes. Incidentally, you might wonder how 18th century trumpet players managed the challenging part in Bach’s second Brandenburg Concerto. It was done by using a high-pitched clarino trumpet on which the player controlled the extreme high notes of the harmonic series purely by the lips. These top harmonics lie close together and composers could use them to make a melody, but they were notoriously difficult to play.
Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751): Trumpet Concerto in B flat. Baldvin Oddsson (tpt), Iceland Symphony Orchestra cond. Matthew Halls (Duration: 09:09; Video: 1080p HD)
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958): Concerto in F minor for Tuba and Orchestra. JáTtik Clark (tba), Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra cond. Marlan Carlson Nobody would be more (Duration: 17:19; surprised at hearing this Video: 720p HD) concerto than Tomaso Albinoni himself, for in his day it would have been virtually impossible to play all the notes on a trumpet. The work was originally written for oboe but it fits the modern valve trumpet perfectly. In this performance the soloist uses the so-called piccolo trumpet which has about half the length of tubing than a standard trumpet and is therefore much higher in pitch creating a bright, penetrating sound. Albinoni was bestknown an opera composer and claimed that he wrote over eighty operas though over the years, the scores of most of them have been lost. Ironically, Albinoni is best-known for his Adagio, which is now thought to be partly the work of someone else.
Fast forward two hundred years and drop down a few octaves and we come to this delightful tuba concerto by the British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The work dates from 1954 and soon became one of the composer’s most popular works. Although the playing technique of the tuba is similar in principle to that of the trumpet, the instrument lies at the opposite end of the acoustic scale. It’s the largest instrument of the brass family and was invented during the 1830s. The instrument was made in many different sizes and in America it transmogrified into the wrap-around sousaphone, a tuba designed for marching bands. Listen out for the lovely lyrical slow movement (at 06:40) which oozes the pastoral Englishness for which the music of Vaughan Williams was noted.

Solid twists keep plot churning in ‘Prisoner in the Castle’ Oline H. Cogdill One pleasure of a mystery series is connecting with a character that changes and grows with each novel. Maggie Hope, the heroine of Susan Elia MacNeal’s World War II novels, is a different woman in this eighth outing, “The Prisoner in the Castle,” than she was in the 2012 Edgar-nominated debut, “Mr. Churchill’s Secretary.” Starting as a typist for Winston Churchill, Maggie has become a full-fledged spy, working for the Special Operations Executive (SOE), the hush-hush organization created by Churchill to “set Europe ablaze.” But at the end of 1942, the spy business turns against special agent Maggie when she is sent to a former Victorian hunting lodge on the tiny, remote Isle of Scarra, nicknamed the Forbidden Island, located hundreds of miles from the mainland of Scotland. The place is supposed to be a secret British training center but is really a prison for top agents whose supervisors worry they could leak vital information or have weaknesses that could be exploited by the enemy. They can’t leave — or communicate with the outside world —
and none of their friends or family knows where they are. But the 10 agents hardly feel like they are in jail as they roam the grounds freely and are served excellent meals by the three servants who live at the lodge. But then the agents — all of whom have been trained to kill — are being murdered, and it is obvious that one of them is putting to practice his — or her — background. The plot’s parallels to Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” are obvious — there are even several references to that 1939 novel. MacNeal honors that classic mystery, but does not make “The Prisoner in the Castle” a copycat novel. As in her other novels, MacNeal puts a fictional spin on real WWII events. “The Prisoner in the Castle” is based on a similar facility for atrisk SOE agents. Maggie’s intelligence and loyalty to the war effort continues to evolve in MacNeal’s series. Maggie’s confinement at the island is complicated because her testimony is vital at a serial killer’s upcoming trial in London. Without her, the killer may go free. Solid twists keep the plot of “The Prisoner in the Castle” churning until the surprise finale. (AP)

‘Christopher Robin’ a return to Hundred Acre Wood
Jake Coyle Los Angeles (AP) - The misfortune of “Christopher Robin” is not only that it comes a year after “Goodbye Christopher Robin,” an earnest if sentimental tale about Winnie-the-Pooh author A.A. Milne and his son, Christopher Robin Milne, but that it arrives a few months after the screwball radiance of “Paddington 2.” When it comes to bears in London this movie year, our hearts are already spoken for. But for those who prefer honey to marmalade, “Christopher Robin” is a more gentle and melancholic fable about recapturing the joys of childhood as an adult with the help of a wise and innocent bear. It’s telling that in Marc Forster’s comparatively somber but sweet movie, the standout of Milne’s furry creatures — all of them rendered digitally as wornout stuffed animals — is that
old grump Eeyore (voiced by Brad Garrett), whose morose mutterings land nearly all the film’s laughs. Humor has never been the forte of Forster (“Finding Neverland,” ‘’Quantum of Solace”), so don’t come to “Christopher Robin” expecting hijinks from Tigger or a single overstuffed bear stuck in a doorway. Instead Forster has fashioned a meticulously handsome post-WWII period drama — perhaps one more for adults than children — leaning much closer to “The Velveteen Rabbit” than Saturday morning cartoon. There’s a degree of atonement in the stylistic shift; the real Christopher Robin (never a fan of the books) lamented the Disneyfication of his father’s characters and never accepted royalties. And as with Disney’s 2106’s “Pete’s Dragon,” there’s an unlikely, largely indie collection of filmmakers behind a relatively modest live-action revival. Alex Ross Perry (“Listen Up Philip”), Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”) and Allison Schroeder (“Hidden Figures”) wrote the script. In the opening scenes in

the fictional land of the Hundred Acre Wood, Pooh and the rest are giving young Christopher Robin a farewell party. “Don’t you get all grow-ed up on us,” Tigger tells him. But after a page-turning montage, Christopher Robin has indeed done just that. He’s now a working, married man in London, wed to Evelyn (Haley Atwell),
with a daughter named Madeline (Bronte Carmichael) and a grueling job. He’s an efficiency manager for a luggage company housed in a towering gray building. The demands of his work have drained all the fun out of Christopher Robin, whose middle name has been upgraded to surname. He hasn’t so much as smiled in years,
Evelyn says. But on a particularly crucial work weekend, out pops Pooh from a Hundred Acre Wood portal from the trunk of a tree outside Christopher’s town house. The voice is instantly recognizable (Pooh veteran Jim Cummings voices him, as well as Tigger) though the form is a little novel. Like the other characters, Pooh looks more a glassy-eyed teddy bear than he has before, and more frizzy than E.H. Shepard’s illustrations. The digital effects impressively double for tangible, handhewn felt creations, but (aside from Owl) they crucially lack lively eyes. That keeps the gang (there’s also Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga and Roo) always secondary on the screen to McGregor. Naturally, Christopher is pulled back into Hundred Acre Wood where his priorities are straightened out. He relearns Pooh’s wise advice that “doing nothing often leads to the very best something”
— a message that proves surprisingly relevant to the midcentury workplace policies of Christopher’s luggage company, even if Pooh mishears his job as “a fishin-the-sea manager.” It all fits together a little too well, too predictably and, well, too Disney. Pooh and company have always been a wonderfully neurotic bunch, but in Forster’s polished film, they’re a little suffocated, a little lifeless. Any semblance of authentic childlike glee remains purely theoretical. It’s surely not a good sign when Eeyore is the one stealing the show. Watching “Christopher Robin,” I couldn’t help feeling a bit like Tigger when he arrives in London and wonders: “How come nobody’s bouncin’?” “Christopher Robin,” a Walt Disney Co. release, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some action.” Running time: 104 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.
Amid cancer treatment, Irrfan Khan finds new a perspective Lindsey Bahr Los Angeles (AP) — Actor Irrfan Khan is a Bollywood star and Hollywood chameleon, who has bounced between the two with ease for decades, working with everyone from Mira Nair to Wes Anderson and Ang Lee and stealing scenes in both Oscar-winners (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and blockbusters (“Jurassic World”) alike. But all that’s been put on hold as he undergoes treatment in London for a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare form of cancer. Although Khan’s life now is very different from only a few months ago, he still has films that he worked on as recently last year coming out, including “Puzzle,” a poignant character drama from Oscar-nominated producer Marc Turtletaub (“Little Miss Sunshine”) about a stifled suburban housewife, played by Kelly Macdonald, who forms a bond with a more cosmopolitan man, (Khan), over a shared fondness for puzzles. It’s one that the 51-year-old actor is immensely proud of, and eager to talk about, but, he also knows very keenly how unpredictable his life has become. AP: ‘Puzzle’ is quite lovely, but also a small character drama — a bit of a departure from the bigger Hollywood films you’ve become known for

Khan: I was looking for something for a long time in American cinema, Hollywood cinema. I have been reaching for this, for a personal experience where I could invest myself and I could have more meat that I could get apart from myself completely and get into something which is unknown. This character had complexity and a strange unpredictability where he himself doesn’t know where things are moving and is in a limbo state. There are so many interesting angles to this person. It was a complex situation, but I love that the way it comes out of the characters’ mouths is very simple. So I fell in love it with it and I shifted my schedule in India and said, “I’m going to do it.” It worked out and I really loved it.
AP: How are you doing in general? Khan: I’ve seen life from a completely different angle. You sit down and you see the other side and that’s fascinating. I’m engaged on a journey. AP: There’s been a lot of speculation in the media about your condition and you’ve made pleas on social media not to trust the reports. But what do you want people to know about what you’re going through? Khan: There are challenges which life throws at you. But I have started believing in the way this condition has tested me, really, really tested me in all aspects — physical, emotional and spiritual. It has put me in a rapture state. Initially I was shaken. I didn’t know. I was very, very
vulnerable. But slowly, there is another way to look at things that is much more powerful and much more productive and healthier, and I just want people to believe that nature is much more trustworthy and one must trust that. Nature will do whatever it has to do. This sudden jolt has put me into a platform where I could look at things in a completely different manner. And for that I am really thankful. AP: What is your day to day like now? Are you reading scripts or planning to work at all? Khan: No, I’m completely out of reading scripts. This has become a surreal experience. My days are unpredictable. I used to think my life would be like that, but I could never practice unpredictability and spontaneity. That has happened now. I don’t plan. I go for breakfast and then I don’t have a plan. I take things as they come. That has been really helping me a lot. I don’t make plans. I’m just spontaneous. And I’m loving this experience. AP: You’re in London going through treatments. Is there anything you can share about that? Khan: I have had the fourth cycle of chemo. And I have to have six cycles and then we need to have a scan. After the third cycle, the scan was positive. But
we need to see after the sixth scan. And then we’ll see where it takes me. There’s no guarantee of life with anybody. My mind could always tell me to hang a kind of chip on your neck and say, “I have this disease and I could die in a few months or a year or two.” Or I could just avoid this conversation completely and live my life the way it offers me. And it offers so much. I admit I
was walking around with blinders. I couldn’t see what it offered me. You stop your contemplation, you stop your planning, you stop the noise. You see the other aspect of it. It gives you so much. Life offers you so much. That’s why I feel like I have no other words but thanks. There are no other words, there’s no other demand, there’s no other prayer.

Edgar Broughton: ‘By Myself’ mott@pattayamail.com The Dog was a big fan of the Edgar Broughton Band in the late Sixties and early Seventies, when they played a mixture of heavy psychedelic jagged blues rock, fronted by Edgar Broughton’s almost Captain Beefheart voice and singing songs of political outrage and social commentary. The band broke up in 1976 and while there were various attempts at reforming, the plug was finally pulled for the last time in 2010 when Broughton opted to go out recording and playing as a solo artist. I was most intrigued to see him on the bill of the wonderful New Day Festival in Faversham, Kent in August 2017. I learnt that Broughton would be performing solo, accompanied only by himself on guitar and imagined we would get a run through of some of the Edgar Broughton
Band classics and then a long version of “Out Demons Out” to fill in the set. I would have been quite happy with that, shouting along to the final chorus, but how delightfully wrong I was. We managed to secure places on the very front row before the stage area filled up and we stayed there mesmerized by this incredibly talented singer. As soon as I was able, I ordered myself a copy of this album, Edgar Broughton’s latest. From Thailand this was not the easiest of things to do but, with a little help from a wizard I know, I managed to buy one off Amazon as a download. I am delighted by the results. Mixing new and old songs from as far back as 1971 (“Poppy” and “Evening Over The Rooftops” from the Edgar Broughton Band album) and including many other favorites from that earlier era, Broughton bravely changes the arrangements around to suit playing with an acoustic guitar: “Green Lights” is no longer based around a piano and “Evening

it would be the underground one. There are plenty of new songs that demand your attention and they certainly hold their own amongst the older diamonds. “This England” is a biting stab at the state of the nation that Edgar Broughton sees tumblin’ around him as he sings: “This England now is in distress, as bad as we have
seen.” No, this old boy has lost none of his teeth. “Christmas Song” meanwhile is a lament of rare beauty of the type that used to be written back in the day when songs had a meaning. There are all emotions on this album, with Broughton always wearing his heart on his sleeve, some of it making the listener feel quite
unsettled as he often hits far too near the mark for comfort. Please do not buy this album if you expect a collection of soulful ballads. You get so much more than that. At the New Day Festival Edgar Broughton played a song in tribute to his friend Mick Farren (rock legend) called “The Sound Don’t Come”. The song was heartbreaking
to listen to and held the several thousand strong audience members spellbound. This will be released on an album next year, making that also a must buy. Brad Pitt says he has given Jolie Pitt millions since split Andrew Dalton Los Angeles (AP) — Brad Pitt said in court documents last week that he has given estranged wife Angelina Jolie Pitt more than $1 million and lent her another $8 million since their separation two years ago, countering her assertion from a day earlier saying he has paid “no meaningful child support.” Pitt’s attorneys said in the two-page document filed in Los Angeles Superior Court that he “adamantly disputes the contention that he has not paid significant child support.” The document added that he loaned Jolie Pitt $8 million to buy her current home, and has paid over $1.3 million in bills for the benefit of Jolie Pitt and their six children. arrangements and she’ll seek a court order to get retroactive payments from him. Pitt’s attorneys said in documents they filed for him that Jolie Pitt’s lawyers have made no mention that she had any problems with the amounts he has given her for the children. It’s not clear what childsupport arrangements the
couple has in place during the divorce process. The two filings were rare unsealed public documents in the case that gave a glimpse into the slow-moving divorce of the 54-year-old actor Pitt and the 43-year-old actress and director Jolie Pitt. Pitt’s attorneys said the filing was utterly unnecessary
and “a thinly veiled effort to manipulate media coverage” of the split. Jolie Pitt’s filing also said she wanted to have the couple’s marriage dissolved by the end of the year by separating some of the lingering issues to be resolved later. Neither side specified what those issues were. Pitt’s lawyers answered that the actor actually suggested expediting the divorce in this way, and had already agreed to it. Jolie Pitt’s filing requested a case management hearing to discuss the issues of child support and finalizing the divorce soon. Pitt’s response said that a status conference that is already scheduled would serve the same purpose. The Hollywood power couple had been together for 12 years and married for two when she filed for divorce in 2016. Jolie Pitt currently has primary custody of their children.

Kelvin Bamfield explains to his PCEC audience that a living will is important if you wish to ensure that you die with dignity if your condition is terminal and you are comatose.
are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity; it is a written expression of their wishes, in terms of how they would choose to be treated should, if and when the occasion ever
Yoga instructor Diana Mountanos with the assistance of two companions, demonstrates one of her recommended stretching exercises for maintaining good health and reducing the risk of injury.
After eight years of retirement he decided to reapply his knowledge and experience and became CEO of THAI 888 Law working with the owner Jeab Supaporn. Kelvin gave a previous talk for PCEC members on pitfalls to be aware of when preparing last wills. He provided a relaxed, but informative, presentation, walking amongst the audience while using power point to show the importance and purpose of creating a living will, which is a form of power of attorney. A living will takes effect should you become mentally incapacitated, either through illness or accident, which are events that could easily and unfortunately happen to any one of us at any time. A living will is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health if they
arises that your condition is terminal. A copy of the living will document can be deposited with hospital(s) of your choice, but you should you be hospitalized in other areas, the person you designated to make decisions for you will need to show them their living will to ensure their instructions regarding what if any life sustaining methods should not be made. Kelvin pointed out that a living will differs from euthanasia; the will being applicable to methods for prolonging life rather than ending life. Kelvin gave several examples of different ways in which it could be applied, and some of the pitfalls which could occur without the benefit of enacting it, such as incurring substantial costs because the doctors are prolonging life even when the ultimate outcome
is terminal. Such costs would become a burden upon your estate. Kelvin then went briefly into what powers of attorney are and cautioned that they should be for specific purposes since it gives another person the legal right to act in your name. For example, it can be authority for a person to sell and transfer title to your property. Therefore, it should be limited as to time and identify the specific property involved. The second presenter was Diane Mountanos, originally from the USA. She has been involved in an active sporting background, starting as a youngster when her father, a lifeguard, inspired and taught her (and her sisters) to swim from the tender age of just 3. During her school years, Diana had a passion for archery, running, and of course swimming (back stroke). This developed into a lifestyle of weight training, racket sports and long-distance running, alongside taking up a career. Being Director of Orthopedics, Diana advised nurses and gave seminars on the subject of rehabilitation and recovery for sufferers of mild to major injuries helping people regain fitness and mobility wherever possible.
All these qualifications and experience stand her in good stead to help people from all walks of life and ages discover the wonders and health benefits of yoga. Diana has previously enlightened the PCEC audience with talks, primarily about yoga. Having been involved with yoga since the 80s, Diana is certainly living proof that yoga is a great pursuit, sporting a youthful slim healthy figure with bundles of energy. She mentioned that her talk would not be so much about yoga, but about the benefits of stretching all your muscles for better health and to prevent injuries when exercising. She said that one can do stretching exercises while sitting in a chair. She encouraged the audience to take part in several exercises as she and two companions demonstrated them from the stage. The room was filled with energy, motion, and laughter for a very enjoyable and mildly exerting 20 minutes of fun. Diana states that stretching as well as yoga, under guidance, can reverse many ailments and effects of ageing, and prevent a lot of ageing issues from occurring. Diana recommends both men and women of all ages should discover the health benefits for mind, body and soul for themselves. Amongst the many conditions helped, she mentioned: high blood pressure, diabetes, neck/back pain, and thyroid issues can be alleviated. The meeting concluded with MC Roy Albiston bringing everyone up to date on upcoming events which was then followed by the Open Forum where members and guests can ask questions or make comments about Expat living in Thailand and their activities. To watch videos of these presentations visit or subscribe to their weekly newsletter at www.pcec.club.
MC Ren Lexander presents Diana Mountanos with the PCEC’s Certificate of Appreciation for her presentation and practical application of beneficial stretching exercises.

Coghlan finds gold at Treasure Hill PSC Golf from the Tropical Golf Group Tuesday, August 7, Khao Kheow – Stableford This course, no matter which nines one plays, is well laid out with plenty of water, bunkers, waste areas, and narrow landing areas and is a true test for all players. We were scheduled for the “A” and “B” nines this day, not the longest of the possible combinations but the most difficult per the ratings. All registered we were soon teeing it up off the
yellow tees on “A-1” with a light breeze at our backs. As we made our way around we found the course in fine condition even though a lot of low season maintenance is ongoing. Some tees are being re-sodded and some areas of fairways have been aerated to encourage growth but with the greens in great condition the course is fine to play and appears to be headed for first class condition by the upcoming high season. Over the years it seems rare
we have a winner beating their handicap at Khao Kheow. This day definitely confirmed that trend with John Davis carding a fine 37 points off his course handicap of 12 to take the top spot. Following John on the podium were Gordon Clegg (25) and Brian Parish (12), both with 35 points, and Mick Coghlan (22) with 33 points. Honorable mentions went to Dick Warberg and John Pierrel for their “Best Nines” efforts.

Monday, August 6, Pattavia – Stableford 1st Les Hall (25) 35pts 2nd Geoff Parker (14) 35pts 3rd Peter Allen (28) 33pts Another good low season number of thirteen golfers for the first game of the week at Pattavia. Play got underway on time and in some of the most pleasant conditions for golf with no wind, very mild temperatures, and most importantly at this course no fruit flies. In what is becoming too regular an occurrence our last group lost touch with the rest of the field and finished at least a half hour after everyone else. This would be an intolerable situation in high season, but today didn’t inconvenience anyone. One of our members who shall remain nameless received a severe censure for uncharacteristic and unbecoming behavior on the last green, no more to be said. Today’s winner was Les Hall who returned a card of thirty-five points, beating Geoff Parker on count-back. Despite losing four points off his handicap recently Peter Allen still figured in the winners’ circle, taking third place on thirty-three points. Only three of the four near pins were taken, one each to Tony Robbins, Alan Sullivan, and Robbie Watts.

3rd Alan Sullivan (12) 34pts Pleasant Valley was the venue for a pleasant round of golf for the Bunker Boys today. The course was uncrowded so play proceeded at a good pace. As this is a wet course with poor drainage it was decided to apply the ‘pick, clean, and place’ rule, however as it turned out it wasn’t necessary except in a very few areas. There wasn’t much run on the fairways and with the blue tees set well back, the course played longer than normal. As there are a few holes with long carries off the tees, a few of our shorter hitters sat out today’s round. Robbie Watts put in a sizzling round of forty-points which included five birdies to take first place. Second, went to Michael Brett who could have outdone Robbie except for two big mistakes resulting in wipes and some indifferent putting. Third place went to Alan Sullivan who despite an additional handicap today returned a score of thirty-four points. Near pins went to Raleigh
1st Geoff Cox (19) net 70 2nd Michael Brett (14) net 76 3rd Les Hall (25) net 77 The golfing week ended on a sad note with the untimely passing of thirty-six-year-old Australian Jarrod Lyle who succumb to a third attack of an aggressive cancer. During his short life, Jarrod displayed a pleasant nature, a ready smile and an indomitable fighting spirit, coupled with solid golfing ability. His passing may give cause for reflection to many of Pattaya’s older golfers who winge and complain for the slightest reason when they should be celebrating the fact that they have reached a mature age and can still play this wonderful if sometimes frustrating game. Crystal Bay was the venue for the last game of the week, a course on which scoring is usually high. Today this was not the case and even though a strong wing made play tricky it still doesn’t explain the low scores. Geoff Cox was the only one to register a decent score with a net seventy. Michael Brett took second with seventysix and Les Hall rounded out the scoring with a net seventy-seven. Only two near pins were taken so two each to Robbie Watts and Michael Brett.

Friday, August 10, Treasure Hill – Stableford It’s August, low season, people traveling, possibility of rain, so we gathered up the remaining troops and headed for Treasure Hill. With their great “All-In” rate and generally well presented, challenging layout, the “Hill” is well worth a monthly visit. Arriving to a near empty parking lot, all were quickly
checked in and headed to the first tee under cloudy skies. Carts allowed on fairways so it was to be a day of “play it as it lies” and hope the rain stayed away. The course was, while pretty damp from irrigation, in fine shape with the fairways and rough in good nick, although a cut a bit too short for some. A bit off the fairways with a bit more grass under the ball was perfect. The greens were
running at a decent pace but a few holes had tricky pin placements where the putts were breaking more than a foot as the ball approached the hole just to keep thing interesting. The last time we played here was Dick’s Birthday Bash Rainbow and more than once players were wishing they could head on up to the red tee for a few holes. With the weather cooperating fully the groups were around in good time and soon on the way back to BJ’s for the presentation. With the smaller group this day there were just four places on the podium for any recognition. Taking the top step, seemingly a regular occurrence recently, was Mick Coghlan playing to his course handicap of 22 with 36 points. Mick was followed by Steve Truelove (7) turning in 34 points and John Davis (12) and Andre Van Dyk (16) both with 32.
Kaneta shines at Eastern Star PSC Golf from The Growling Swan Monday, August 6, Eastern Star Stableford 1st Mashi Kaneta (14) 38pts 2nd Jerry Dobbs (22) 36pts 3rd Tony Campbell (35) 35pts Near Pins: Martin Kempton (3), Mashi Kaneta. Long Putts: Glenn Smith, Martin Kempton. Twelve golfers ventured out to play Eastern Star on Monday. It is a very good course and once they complete the club house it will be a venue that will have to be booked well in advance. We took the course on from the white tees with just only one division as our numbers dictated. Well it was that man Mashi Kaneta that took the top prize with 38 points and was a clear winner. Into second place was Jerry Dobbs, a fine way to finish his tour of duty with an even par 36 while third place went to Tony Campbell, his first prize with us.

our 36 golfers (nine groups) out to the course to play a 4ball better ball in memory of our old golfing pal Tony Spagoni. We attacked from the yellow tees at a distance of around 6100 yards, long enough for us. Playing North & West nines with North 6 being the hole where Tony passed away. The course was in great nick, the fairways were mowed to a good length, greens ran true and the bunkers were clean and raked. So all in all it was a good course to play on.
The draw for playing groups was conducted based on current PSC Handicaps, the nine lowest handicapped golfers were drawn as captains. We had a tie for first place and the 2 groups involved could not be separated. So the honors today went to the quartet of Rudy Regenass, Andy Zwart, Frank Riley & Dick Braimbridge and the team of Paul Hack, Brendan Cope, Kevin Smith & Andrew Allen. Filling the podium in third was the grouping of Peter MacDonald, Rocky Lawson, Glenn Smith & Tony Campbell.

Harvey on top at Pattavia Effendie edges tight contest PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort Pattaya Tuesday, August 7, Pattavia - Stableford We went to Pattavia on Tuesday and had a beautiful day with very nice weather. The course was in perfect condition but as always it proved to be a real challenge also. The winning scores were close together and coming out on top was Neil Harvey with 38 points, one point up on second placed Paddy Devereux who in turn beat Phil Waite on count-back. Near pins went to Neil Harvey and Phil Waite.

found the course in very good condition. Our holein-one man, Stanley Rees, showed good form and won with an even par 36 points, beating Dave Smith
on count-back. Taking third some way back was Neil Harvey with 32 points. Near pins were claimed by Neil Harvey and Stephen Ford.
Kazu in the pink with debut win Traveller’s Rest Golf Group made it three in a row with an incredible score of 40 points, which also earned himself a meeting with the handicap master.
Monday, August 6, Pattana - Stableford 1st Darren Stanton (14) 43pts 2nd Danny Willits (12) 40pts 3rd Peter Peterson (6) 40pts We began the week at the magnificent Pattana course where a couple of Aussie mates fought it out for first and second place. Darren Stanton set up his win on the front nine (A course) with an incredible twenty three points which included three consecutive birdies on holes 4, 5 & 6. Daz held it together on the back-nine and finished the day with very respectable 43 points.
Tuesday, August 7, Green Valley Stableford 1st Kazu Mochidome (10) 38pts 2nd Phil Taylor (20) 36pts 3rd Barry Sowman (8) 36pts On Tuesday we witnessed the power of the Samurai in the form of Kazu Mochidome. Kazu has played with the TRGG since 2013 and hadn’t once won a tournament, today, however, he set the stage for an incredible week. In resplendent colour coordinated pink attire and a custom painted pink driver he wouldn’t have looked out of place in Boy’s Town, but this was Green Valley and Kazu, despite his flamboyant appearance, meant business. His 38 points and first ever TRGG win was only the start of things to come for the “Mighty Mochidome”.

Kazu Mochidome.
Chapter two for Kazu took place at Khao Kheow where the colour coordination was taken to a whole new level; with matching accessories in the form of a water flask, a tee pouch, tees and balls and believe it or not “pink” shoe laces! Once again his golf did the talking but with strong winds and water logged fairways the course played extremely difficult. Only three players scored thirty points or better and Kazu’s 33 points was more than enough to give him back to back wins.
Thursday, August 9, Phoenix – Stableford 1st Kazu Mochidome (10) 40pts 2nd Christer Dolk (14) 36pts 3rd Guy Fraser (13) 35pts Chapter three and the atmosphere at the TRGG was electrifying, everyone waiting in anticipation of Kazu’s arrival. When he arrived there was a collective gasp as this kaleidoscope of colour appeared. Unfazed by all the attention the “Mighty Mochidome”
1st Arnold Jones (17) 40pts 2nd Jim Best (14) 36pts 3rd John Baxter (19) 36pts When the odds are against you and you’re fighting a losing battle, you can always rely on the Americans to save the day. They’d had enough of Kazu’s popularity so together they formed a plan to topple his dictatorship. Fashion and style are never really seen in the same sentence as American so they decided not to compete on this level, instead they would use strength and numbers to bring him down. Armed with the best equipment money could buy they were confident of a quick and decisive victory. Riding off into the sunset from the 1st at Burapha, AJ, Hawk, Best and Baxter knew they wouldn’t be coming home until the job was done. By the end of the day they had only suffered one casualty, sadly the Hawk was M.I.A. Someone else was M.I.A too, Kazu wasn’t at Burapha, he was playing in the Pattaya Match Play competition at Pattavia, thrilling his audience with another amazing outfit and actually winning the Best Dressed Player of 2018.

Monday, August 6, Laem Chabang – Stableford A Flight 1st Mark Effendie (15) 35pts 2nd Tom Gorey (15) 35pts 3rd Geoff Wallace (16) 34pts 4th Kevin LaBar (14) 33pts B Flight 1st Darren Beavers (21) 33pts 2nd David Marshall (18) 33pts 3rd Pierre Zbingden (18) 31pts 4th Mike Tottenham (20) 31pts The society travelled to Laem Chabang on Monday for another joust on the Jack Nicklaus creation, which was in excellent condition as always. The option was still the BC combination and steady rain the day before had made the C course softer than the front half, leaving nine very long holes to conclude the round. A quartet of fine golfers playing elsewhere in the first round of the defence of the group’s Pattaya Matchplay Series competition did not detract from the intensity of the day’s competition and the forty-two golfers, in two flights, cut at seventeen and

under, set about their task on time and in good order. In the second flight, fourth place went to Mike Tottenham with 31 points, losing out on count-back, a little disappointing when one recalls the form he is in currently. Beating him into third place was Pierre Zbinden with another solid round. In second was David Marshall with a steady 33 points whilst the winner was Darren Beavers with a countback bonus, also on 33 points. In the top flight, Kevin LaBar took fourth place with
33 points, one behind Aussie Geoff Wallace who was celebrating his final round this trip with 34 points. It took another count-back to decide the top two and the unlucky golfer was Tom Gorey whose 35 points gave him the runner-up envelope, whilst Mark Effendie took the main prize with the same number of points. Near pins went to Maurice Roberts (B8 and C5), Mark Effendie (B5) and Tom Gorey (C8) - yes, it was that tight all the way through.
Daws does the double The Jomtien Golf Society Monday, August 6, Greenwood Stableford We were playing the A and C nines today off the white tees, with the equal cut in the two divisions at 7-19 and 20 plus. It was a tough test of golf out there and this was reflected in the scores. Ray Daws recorded the best score of the day, winning division 1 with 35 points, Gareth Piccininn came second on 34 and Shane Tutton beat Neil Gamble 14/13 on a backnine countback after they both came in with 31 points. John Doyle with 33 points topped division 2, Alan Bissell was second on 32 and Lars Strom took third with 28. Paul Young in division 1 and Ray Daws in division 2 won the near pins but we had no ‘2’s today.
Wednesday, August 8, Burapha - Stableford We had an almost identical turnout as of Monday, with the same handicap cut and also the A and C nines in play as well. Only one score above the Greenwood results and Neil Gamble won division 1 with 39 points. Six points behind in second place was Shane Tutton while Paul Young finished third with 30 points. Ray Daws with 35 points won division 2, Alan Bissell
(From left) Ray Daws, Gareth Piccininn and Frank Grainger.
was second on 34 and Frank Grainger placed third with 31 points. Near pins went to (Div 1) Neil Gamble and (Div 2) Kenny Cleckner (2), Ray Daws and Shene Tutton. There was another additional rollover in both divisions in the ‘2’s.
Friday, August 10, Eastern Star Stableford There was an unusual cut today in the two divisions with a split of 14-18 in division 1 and 20 plus in division 2. As always the white tees were chosen and some very slick greens and a strong wind coming off the coast caused a problem for quite a few players. The highest score of the
day was 35 points, coming from the Irish boy Frank Kelly who won division 1. Harry Vincenzi was second on 33 points and Colin Aspinall came third with 32. John Doyle topped division 2 with an amazingly low 30 points and in his last game with us Lars Strom took second on 26, while the organizer lost out to Tony Thorne on a 15/13 back nine countback for third after a poor 25 points each. Yet again there were only three winners out of eight in the nearest the pins, Nik Evans in division 1 and Lars Strom and Harry Vincenzi in division 2. In the ‘2’s today, Harry Vincenzi birdied the 3rd and in division 1 there was another rollover to next Friday.

Koepka holds off Woods to win PGA Championship Doug Ferguson St. Louis (AP) — The roars were unlike anything Brooks Koepka had ever heard, and he knew exactly what they meant. They got louder for each birdie by Tiger Woods that moved him closer to the lead last Sunday in the PGA Championship, and Koepka could hear a ripple effect of noise. First, real time. Seconds later, another burst from patrons watching on TV in chalets. Then, distant cheers from every corner of Bellerive when the score was posted. “We knew what was going on,” he said. “It’s pretty obvious when Tiger makes a birdie. Everybody on the golf course cheers for him.” Koepka knew exactly what to do. Amid relentless pandemonium, Koepka ran off three straight birdies to end the front nine and seize control. When he was tied with Adam Scott through 14 holes, with Woods one shot behind, he delivered backto-back birdies. The last one was a laser of a 4-iron from 248 yards that settled 6 feet away, sending him to a dream finish of a year that began with
the 28-year-old Floridian wondering if a wrist injury that kept him out four months would ever allow him to compete again. “That will probably go down as probably one of the best shots I’ve ever hit under pressure,” he said. He closed with a 4-under 66 for a two-shot victory over Woods and took his place among the elite in golf. Koepka became the fifth player to win the U.S. Open and PGA Championship in the same year, joining Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen. It will be impossible to overlook him now, not with the Wanamaker Trophy to go with his back-to-back U.S. Open titles. Koepka won two of the three majors he played this year, and three of his last six. Not since Woods won four in a row through the 2001 Masters has anyone won majors at such an alarming rate. And yet it still felt — and certainly sounded — as though he played second billing to Woods. The crowd was enormous, louder than anything in golf this side of Augusta National or a Ryder Cup, and Woods looked closer than ever to capping his comeback from

four back surgeries with another major. Even with two bogeys, Woods shot 64 for his lowest final round in a major. He finished at 266, beating by three shots his best 72-hole score in a major. At this major, it wasn’t enough. “I played hard,” Woods said. “I made a bit of a run but I just came up a little short.” Koepka was responsible for that. After wasting one chance to put it away by missing consecutive birdie chances from 7 feet, Koepka kept attacking flags and ran in birdie putts of 10 feet on No. 15
and 7 feet on No. 16 to end the drama. He tapped in for par on the final hole to set the PGA Championship scoring record at 264. It also tied the major championship record that Henrik Stenson set at Royal Troon two years ago in the British Open. Adam Scott hung around by making big putts, just like he hoped, and was tied for the lead until Koepka’s birdies. Scott missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 17th that would have pulled him to within one shot — right after Koepka missed from the same range — and then made bogey on the 18th for a 67 to finish alone in third.
The only knock on Koepka is that he doesn’t win enough elsewhere — the Phoenix Open on the PGA Tour, the Turkish Airlines Open on the European Tour, and two victories at the Dunlop Phoenix on the Japan Golf Tour. “He’s won three majors now, so he’s definitely winning the right ones,” Scott said. “If I was him, I wouldn’t change much at the moment. I’d just keep doing what he’s doing because he’s showing up at the right moments in the biggest events. There’s something inside his brain that makes him believe that that’s what he’s destined to do.” The St. Louis fans waited 17 years to see Woods — he last was at Bellerive when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks canceled a World Golf Championship — and he delivered a performance that took golf back in time. Thomas Bjorn might have seen it coming. Earlier in the week, as he was cleaning out his locker after withdrawing with an injury, he thought back to Woods getting into contention at Carnoustie last month at the British Open. “He recognized who that guy was that day,” Bjorn said.
Woods was relentless, pumping fists, raising the putter in his left hand, making birdies and charging toward a finish that caused pure pandemonium among one of the largest and noisiest crowds at a major. Without hitting a fairway on the front nine, Woods cut the four-shot deficit to two. Dialed in on the back nine, he dropped an approach into 4 feet on No. 12, got within one shot with a 10-foot birdie on the par-3 13th and, after a bad drive led to bogey, he answered with another approach that hit a foot from the hole. That was as good as it got. Facing the most important drive of the day on the par-5 17th, Woods sent it sailing to the right and it embedded in a hazard along the banks of a creek. He did well to advance it, but had to save par from a bunker. Behind him, Koepka holed his two birdie putts. “It’s tough to beat when the guy hits it 340 down the middle,” Woods said. “What he did at Shinnecock, just bombing it, and then he’s doing the same thing here. ... And when a guy’s doing that and hitting it straight, and as good a putter as he is, it’s tough to beat.”

Monday, August 6, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford 1st Jim Dundon 37pts 2nd Bob Catlow 33pts 3rd Alan Frandsen 32pts We played a brand new Green Valley today as the
course was set up in tournament condition after the Singha event that ended on Sunday. Pins were in brutal positions, greens were superfast and the set-up proved to be a real challenge, even for the members. This is probably the best condition we have seen the course all year. The weather
was cool and overcast and from the reports, it was hotter in London than in Pattaya! We have had the occasional light shower, but this summer will go down as one of the mildest ever. Allan Frandsen has been playing with us for the past few weeks on his holiday from Copenhagen. His 32 points got him third on the podium for today’s competition, and the near pin as well. The Catman, Bobby Catlow is a steady player and keeps it in the fairway. Bob took sole second with a 33 on the card for a fine round of golf. Jimmy Dundon is wrapping up his trip to Pattaya. This was his last week on tour before heading back to work, sailing the world and his timing was perfect. Jim was the only golfer today to shoot to his handicap on this difficult track and 37 gave him the win. Phil and Dave gave Jim a big thanks for his winning donations to our Caddy Smile project.

Down the first fairway at Pattavia.
2nd Robbie Taylor 37pts 3rd David Ferris 33pts The Sports Day special brought us 4 groups to one of the best golf courses in the area. Burapha has been around for a long time and is always a reliable, go-to course that has consistent, excellent conditions. Today we had no rain but a bit of wet from a downpour the previous night. Greens were smooth and quick. Dave Ferris and Robbie Taylor were certainly on the podium but nowhere near our winner. With a blistering 43 point round, our old mate Kenny Grimes pulled one from out of nowhere for a huge win and his best score in ages.
Friday, August 10, Pattavia Century (white tees) – Stableford 1st Ray Walter 31pts 2nd Glenn Byrnes 30pts 3rd Trevor Egan 26pts It was a tough day at the office at a course running
over 6,500 yards and greens slick as glass. Nobody even came close to shooting their handicap and a 26 would get you on the podium! Some of the lads were participating at the Pattaya Matchplay which we also hosted today, so a smaller field of just 3 groups went out. The course was in decent shape but the tee boxes were cored, so no problem there. Greens were back to their treacherous best. The day started out perfect with overcast skies. On the back nine it cleared up and was on the hot side but bearable. Trevor marched in with just 26, but better than most. Glynn at least made that 30 mark, with the help of that fabulous handlebar moustache, and lucky Ray was the big winner with just 31.

Monday, August 6, Phoenix – Stableford Phoenix just after the tournament for the Royal Trophy, and if you got off the fairway you were in trouble big time. With 6 groups playing everything went as smooth as butter and we just flowed along. The course, as to be expected, was in great condition with everything just in the right place and the greens were fantastic. There was a three-way count-back on 31 points for fifth spot with George Way taking it courtesy of his 19 points on the back nine. Fourth place went to Paul Greenaway with 32 points, third was taken by Bill Marsden with 33, second went to Steve Giles with 39 and the top spot went to the Lovely Miss Sasicha with 40 points. greens were slick, the pins and the flags (all were white so no indication of the position of the hole) were in the same position as they were for the pros. The difficult pin positions were, perhaps, the reason that scores were somewhat below par. The winner of the ladies, Miss Eng, came in on top with 35 points with three 3-pointers on the way home for 19 points, which was that little bit better than Miss Kran on the same score with only 16 on the back-nine. Raldorf & Engstler battle to podium in Bang Saen The Pattaya based Unixx TR-Motorsport team rolled into the coastal town of Bang Saen for rounds 5 & 6 of the Thailand Super Series last month. After the issues that plagued the team in rounds 3 & 4 in Buriram, the focus was to get back into contention for the title race on the tight, twisty streets of Bang Saen at the race festival held from July 11-15. The team welcomed Franz Engstler as the new codriver with Thomas Raldorf for the weekend, the former needing no introduction as he has one of the finest racing pedigrees on the planet. As qualifying arrived the team were in confident mood and the drivers duly delivered, with Engstler taking 4th on the grid for Race 1 and Raldorf going two places better with 2nd on the grid for Race 2. As the lights went green on

for the driver changeover at this point but later found out that changeovers were not allowed under the safety-car ruling and Raldorf, who had taken over in the driver’s seat was subsequently black flagged from the race. There were several causalities from Race 1 that didn’t start Race 2, leaving just a field of six as the lights went green. The remaining #38 Toyota suffered brake failure on the very first lap and ended up in the barriers, meaning the safety car was once more deployed as the marshals worked to remove the stricken car. As the safety car pulled in, the pole-sitting Ferrari 488 got away quickly and left Raldorf to defend his 2nd place from the faster B-Quik Porsche. The top three cars were constantly setting fastest laps, Raldorf was starting to catch the Ferrari and by the time pit window opened the top three were separated by just over one second. During the driver changeovers the top two teams lost valuable seconds and the B-Quik Porsche took advantage to take the lead. The Ferrari gradually caught up to the B-Quik car and with only a few minutes of the race left, the two cars fighting for the lead
approached a backmarker and the Porsche driver made a mistake, sending him into the barriers and allowing the Ferrari through to take the lead. Engstler also took advantage of the error to fly through and claim a very hard fought and valuable 2nd place. In the race for the championship the team now lie level on points with the Ferrari team in 2nd place and only 16 points behind the B-Quik team with a further 60 points available in the rounds 7 &

8. The Porsche will be back on track for the concluding event of the season as they return to the Chang International Circuit in Buriram for the final rounds on October 23. In the Super 2000 / Thailand Touring Car class, Unixx TR-Motorsport and driver Tony Percy were in confident mood in Bang Saen, but due to an unavoidable engine replacement during qualifying Percy was forced to start at the very back of the grid for Race 1.After taking several positions within the first three corners disaster struck again and the Honda was forced to retire from the race with a mechanical issue. Race 2 was a completely different affair, this time the

Dane blew away the more senior opposition in qualifying to take pole position with a time that was 4 seconds faster than his best lap in free practice. As the lights went green for Race 1, Jensen struggled to get the car off the line and fell back to 3rd place, but over the next few laps the young driver regained focus, pushed hard at every corner and soon retook the position. The lead car was 7 seconds down the track and Jensen was on the hunt, closing the gap to just 2 seconds after only a few laps, however a wayward backmarker held up his charge and despite then setting the fastest lap of the race he was unable to catch the eventual winner. Unfortunately a stomach virus laid young Jensen low before Race 2 and the decision was taken by the team to withdraw him from the starting grid. He will now be hoping for better fortune for rounds 5 & 6 at the Bira International Circuit from August 31 – September 2. Ducati’s Lorenzo edges MotoGP champion Marquez in Austria Spielberg, Austria (AP) — Ducati rider Jorge Lorenzo edged MotoGP champion Marc Marquez to win the Austrian Grand Prix last Sunday. After swapping the lead several times during the race, Marquez overtook Lorenzo again on the final lap but slowed after slipping on his Honda and ultimately finished 0.130 seconds behind in second. Lorenzo’s teammate Andrea Dovizioso, who won
last year, finished third as Ducati retained its unbeaten record on the course since the Austrian MotoGP returned to the calendar in 2016. Chasing his fifth riders’ championship, Marquez stretched his lead over Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi to 59 points. The Italian finished sixth after starting the race in 14th. After his third win of the season, Lorenzo climbed to third in the standings, trailing Marquez by 71 points.

Woakes takes his chance to give England 2-0 lead over India Sam Johnston London (AP) — After starring with the bat, Chris Woakes took his chance with the ball. The allrounder and man of the match claimed the final wicket as England beat India at Lord’s by an innings and 159 runs in the second test to take a 2-0 lead last Sunday in the five-match series. India were all out for 130 in their second innings, barely improving on 107 in the first. England had earlier declared on 396-7 — with Woakes 137 not out, his first test century — during the opening session of the fourth day. “Coming back into the side — as someone that’s always been a big part of the squad for a long period of time now — it’s great to see him (Woakes) taste some rewards,” England captain Joe Root said. Woakes returned largely due to the absence of Ben Stokes, who was standing trial for affray at a court in Bristol. Having shared a matchturning partnership of 189 with Jonny Bairstow (93) on Saturday, Woakes added 17 to his overnight score
before England declared with a lead of 289 when Sam Curran was out for 40. James Anderson then took over with the ball. After 5-20 in India’s first innings, Anderson got 4-23 in the second. He became the first player to take 100 test wickets at Lord’s by removing Murali Vijay for a duck for the second time in the match. As well as reaching the Lord’s milestone, the dismissal — Anderson’s 96th against India — made him the highest wicket-taker in test matches between the two nations. His 97th soon followed. Another in-swinger did for Lokesh Rahul (10), striking him on the pad for a clear leg before wicket and India were 17-2 at lunch, hoping for prolonged rain. An inspired spell from Stuart Broad, during which he took four wickets in seven overs for just seven runs, put England on the brink of victory. Broad had Ajinkya Rahane caught in the slips and then bowled Cheteshwar Pujara — who made a defiant 17 from 87 balls — with a wicked in-swinger.

Ciaran Fahey Berlin (AP) — Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen had the joy of beating his older brother in a 1-2 finish in the men’s 5,000 meters at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin last Saturday. The 17-year-old Ingebrigtsen, who became the youngest athlete to clinch a European track title when he won the 1,500 on Friday, finished in 13 minutes, 17.06 seconds for a European under-20 record. “We started preparing for the 5K final as soon as we crossed the line on the 1,500 last night,” Ingebrigtsen said.
His 27-year-old brother, Henrik Ingebrigtsen, was second, ahead of Morhad Amdouni of France. “This could only feel better if our brother Filip was here to take the bronze medal. Unfortunately, he injured himself and couldn’t take part in the final,” Henrik Ingebrigtsen said of 25-year-old Filip Ingebrigtsen, who had raced as defending champion in the 1,500 the night before but finished 12th. “We have another brother who is turning 5 years old, and soon can join the Ingebrigtsen team,” Henrik Ingebrigtsen joked.

With the tea interval looming, Broad got the key wicket of India captain Virat Kohli, who dropped down a place
Kohli appeared restricted in movement and was caught by Ollie Pope at short leg for 17. But Kohli downplayed fears over his condition, saying he was “confident” he’d be ready to play when the series resumes at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Saturday. The next ball Broad trapped Dinesh Karthik lbw for a golden duck, leaving India at 66-6 when rain forced an early tea an over later. Broad ended with figures of 4-44. “I was gutted when that rain arrived,” Broad said. “I was feeling in really good rhythm.” Hardik Pandya (26) and Ravichandran Ashwin (33 not out) showed defiance to put on India’s highest partnership of the match — 55 runs for the seventh wicket — but Woakes again showed his value. He trapped Pandya
leg before, and England quickly surged to victory. “Even when the ball is doing a bit you have to pitch it in the right areas and their guys were relentless with the ball,” Kohli said. “They made us work hard for runs and put a lot of pressure on us.” Anderson took his tally for the match to nine wickets by removing Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami for ducks, before Woakes fittingly finished the job with Ishant Sharma caught at leg slip to put the hosts in firm control of the series. “Trying to get the ball out of Broad’s and Jimmy’s (Anderson’s) hands when it’s like that can be tricky,” Woakes said. “But they’re world class and they showed how good they can be this game.” The third test match starts in Saturday, August 18.

Chelsea, Tottenham dispel doubts with winning starts in EPL Rob Harris London (AP) - Chelsea and Tottenham dispelled doubts about their readiness to make winning starts to the Premier League last Saturday. A week after being swatted aside by Manchester City in the Community Shield, Chelsea beat Huddersfield 30 in Maurizio Sarri’s first league match in charge. France World Cup winner N’Golo Kante volleyed in the opener in the 34th minute, Jorginho netted a penalty on his Premier League debut before halftime and Pedro Rodriguez drove home the third with an angled drive after the break. There was barely a save to make for Kepa Arrizabalaga, who became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper when he joined Chelsea for 80 million euros from Athletic Bilbao earlier in the week. Chelsea were one of the league’s biggest spenders in the summer transfer window. Tottenham were the only topflight side to fail to make a signing but still opened with a 2-1 victory at Newcastle. All the goals came inside the opening 18 minutes as Joselu canceled out Jan Vertonghen’s opener for Tottenham before Dele Alli headed in the winner. While Alli was on target, fellow England World Cup semifinalist Harry Kane endured frustration in front of

goal at St. James’ Park. The striker, who was the tournament’s top scorer in Russia, has now failed to score a Premier League goal in August at 14 attempts. After spending more than $250 million on new players since gaining promotion, the League’s newcomers only collected one point between them. Cardiff lost 2-0 at Bournemouth and Fulham fell to the same score at home to Crystal Palace. But Wolverhampton collected a point in a thrilling 22 draw with Everton. So much has changed at the central England team since they were last among the elite six years ago, with Chinese
ownership investing heavily and utilizing its business relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent to attract players. Two of Jorge Mendes’ clients netted for Wolves as they twice came from behind: Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez. Neves canceled out Richarlison’s debut goal for Everton directly from a free kick after Phil Jagielka was dismissed for a dangerous sliding challenge on Diogo Jota. Even with 10 men, Brazilian forward Richarlison restored Everton’s lead in the second half but Neves swung in a cross that was headed in by Jimenez to restore parity.
Brighton outspent champions Manchester City on 10 new players couldn’t prevent Watford beating the south-coast side 2-0 after a double from Roberto Pereyra. Manchester United and Leicester opened the new Premier League season on Friday evening, with United running out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford while in Sunday’s games, the postArsene Wenger era began at the Emirates Stadium with Unai Emery’s Arsenal being outplayed by Manchester City and losing 2-0 through goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva. Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah was back on target for Liverpool as they swatted aside West Ham 4-0 at Anfield. Salah, who scored 44 times in his first season at Liverpool, took only 19 minutes to get off the mark by meeting Andrew Robertson’s cross with a tap-in. Another cross from Robertson opened up West Ham for Liverpool’s second in first-half stoppage time. James Milner’s cutback was turned into the net by Sadio Mane, who added a third eight minutes after the break. Even after Salah was taken off, his replacement, Daniel Sturridge, found the net late. Liverpool, who finished fourth last season, haven’t won the English title since 1990. In Sunday’s third game, Southampton and Burnley played out a goalless draw.

WLTP testing cycle or the outgoing NEDC standard. Tesla claims the Model S can hit triple figures in 2.7s and travel between 360 km and 834 km – depending on driving conditions, speed and other variables – between charges in flagship 568 kW P100D form, which is priced from $248,377 drive away. Much of the positive factors of the proposed Taycan are due to its 800-volt lithiumion battery pack, which consists of 400 cells of about 4V each. In line with its sustainability goals, Porsche is already studying how the battery pack can be reused in the future. Porsche has given the Taycan fast-charging capabilities, which allows it to recoup 400 km of driving range after about a 15-minute charge at an AC charging station with a Combined Charging System (CCS). A sign of coming times is the cooperation between Porsche, BMW Group, Daimler AG, Volkswagen Group and Ford Motor Company. This collaboration is creating a fast-charging network for EVs in Europe that will feature about 400 parks with multiple stations each positioned every 100 to 150 km along main traffic arteries by 2020. All European EV owners will at the same time have access to thousands of brand- and capacity-independent high-power charging

But I thought that it was time for me to take on a fresh and new challenge,” Ricciardo said in the statement. “I realize that there is a lot ahead in order to allow Renault to reach their target of competing at the highest level but I have been impressed by their progression in only two years, and I know that each time Renault has been in the sport they eventually won.” Renault’s team president Jerome Stoll and their Managing Direction Cyril Abiteboul know the signing
will help in the teams’ push to reclaim another title. “Signing Daniel Ricciardo is a unique opportunity for the Groupe Renault towards this objective that could not be missed. We welcome Daniel’s arrival to our team, still in the making, but more motivated than ever,” Stoll said. “Daniel’s signing underscores our determination to accelerate our progress towards the forefront of the sport,” Abiteboul added. And as a footnote, I raced against his father in 1996.

Porsche Taycan
Want to put down your deposit for a Taycan? To go along with the Macan you have already? Or the Tiguan? Or the tincan? Only Nissan can come up with more nonsensical names (bring back the Cedric) though Mitsubishi goes close with the Attrage. Porsche has confirmed powertrain details for its first battery-electric vehicle (BEV), which will be officially revealed next year. Formerly known as the Mission E in concept guise, the Taycan will employ two permanently-excited synchronous motors (PSMs) – similar to those used in the Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid racecar – with one driving the front axle, while the other motivates the rear wheels. Given PSMs are the equivalent of turbochargers, this powertrain combination will deliver a peak power output of more than 440 kW (600 hp). As a result, Porsche claims the Taycan can sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in “well under” 3.5 seconds while on the way to 200 km/h in less than 12.0s. Porsche says PSMs were chosen as “they boast both extremely-high sustained performance and maximum efficiency”. If everything goes as planned the Taycan will have a driving range of more than 500 km, although is its unclear if this figure falls under the incoming, more-realistic
With everyone sure that Daniel Ricciardo would stay at Red Bull for another two seasons, it however was not the time to count chickens. With the plum seats at Mercedes and Ferrari not up for grabs, the only seat that was left in the manufacturer teams was Renault. The first half of the season Ricciardo was just putting up with the feisty Dutchman Max Verstappen, but when Verstappen’s salary package was announced and was more than Ricciardo’s this prompted the winds of change. Undoubtedly, Ricciardo remembered the other Aussie previously at Red Bull, Mark Webber, who famously said, “Not bad for a Number Two driver,” when he won the British Grand Prix. Verstappen’s new contract literally pushes Ricciardo behind. Ricciardo said, “It was probably one of the most difficult decisions to take in my career
stations, which will have a capacity of up to 350 kW per point to enable shorter charging times than the systems currently available. Alternatively, the Taycan can be charged at an owner’s home via conductive charging using a wallbox or a suitable cable, or inductive charging through a base plate in the floor. According to Porsche, “three figures worth” of Taycan engineering mules have been built to date, with 40 specialists constructing them at its prototype construction department in Zuffenhausen, Germany. More than sixty Porsche engineers were recently sent to the western part of South Africa with 21 Taycan prototypes to complete 40,000 km of hot-weather testing. Taycan engineering mules have also been exposed to cold-weather testing. By the time the BEV enters the European market in late-2019, millions of kilometres of testing will have taken place. The launch of the Taycan will help Porsche achieve its goal of every second vehicle it sells featuring electrification by 2025, of which BEVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) will have an even split. As such, sales expectations are high for the Taycan, with Porsche projecting it will sell about 20,000 units a year, or about two-thirds of the 911 sportscar’s current volume.
Last week I asked about a race car that broke the world land speed record. It was one of six cars built to improve its aerodynamics, with a 21.504 cm3 (1.312.3 in3), 200 hp (149.1 kW) inline-four engine. Of the six cars, two survive, one held by the manufacturer and the other belongs to a U.S. collector. What were these six cars, and what year they were campaigned? They were the Blitzen Benz in 1909. Just imagine the 21 liter engine peaking at around 1,200 RPM with pistons the size of dustbins going up and down! So to this week. There have been many items over the years that were invented and have left indelible marks on the future of motoring. One was a tricycle. Whose tricycle

Three top tips to spot online used car scams The British authorities are reporting an increase in the car purchase on-line scams. Mycarcheck.com has warned of a marked increase in online used vehicle scams and highlighted three telltale signs of a con: 1. Is the vehicle being offered for substantially less than other similar models? 2. Does the number ring out or go to voicemail, prompting you to ‘email the seller’? 3. Are you then offered a vehicle that is abroad but can be ‘shipped to you’? Mark Bailey, Head of CDL
Vehicle Information Systems, which owns mycarcheck.com said, “The sheer volume of online scams is off the chart this summer, with seasonal favorites like convertibles, camper vans and motor homes being targeted. “The staff at our Glasgow call center speak to used car buyers every day, often when they’re about to transfer money, so we have our finger very much on the pulse when it comes to the latest scams. From early this year we saw a significant rise in fraudulent online adverts, but from May onwards it really ramped up, not only for the usual cars, vans and bikes, but for plant and agricultural vehicles, every sector you can think of. “Sophisticated con artists, often operating in organized criminal gangs, can create
scam adverts very quickly and on an industrial scale, even setting up whole fake dealer websites. At first glance, they look realistic; they cut and paste wording from genuine adverts and add features like make and model searches to appear more convincing. “If you encounter any of the above, and certainly all three in order, it should serve as a red flag that you are being lined up. The best advice remains: If in doubt, walk away.” Though that is the UK experience, you only have to look at the first three pages of Pattaya Mail to see we are not without scam merchants here. What makes these scams so plausible is they are not trying to sell you a stolen car – there is no car! All they want is a deposit.

Jackalope purchases children’s books for charity Mark Gorda After just a few short conversations on Facebook, an English gentleman who imports new and used children’s books from the U.K. graciously went out of his way as well as out of his pocket to donate to our mutual charitable cause, the Fountain of Life and the Camillian Centre for children. He reduced his price by 50% so the Jackalope could purchase the little goldmine of children’s learning books and donate them to these worthy charities through the Jesters Care for Kids. The box contained over a hundred children’s books, with most being Walt Disney classics, such as 101 Dalmatians, Beauty and the Beast,
The Emperor’s New Clothes, Dumbo, Tigger, Aladdin and several other all-time favourites, all children’s short versions of the books. The box also contained over 20 books by the world famous children’s author Roger Hargreaves, and a large selection of children’s learning books by many other various authors. The books were 95% brand new, and the used ones were in new condition and will, I’m sure, be gladly accepted by the Camillian Centre both as a learning tool and for entertainment purposes. Dingeling by Mathias Almost one year ago, a previously run down Italian restaurant on Nongprue Road was taken over by German ex-pat Mathias Martens. In a few weeks he completely renovated and remodeled, adding an al fresco but covered area and a faux beach on the other side. In the middle is the restaurant proper and a sit-up bar, favored by the Jägermeister crowd. The tables have comfortable chairs and there are a couple of round table for groups of 6-8 diners, as well as the standard 3-4 places. Place mats were clean. The menu is in German, but the following page is in English, so don’t despair! It is not a large menu, but more than adequate with its
choices. It begins with breakfasts, but since the restaurant doesn’t open till 12 noon I think you can skip those. Drinks are not expensive with local beers B. 70-85. Erdinger is imported and costs B. 130. Soft drinks are B. 35 and fruit juices B. 60. The Dining Out team had a Singha Light (B. 70) while the junior tasters had soft drinks. Sandwiches and soups are between B. 120 and 170, with the goulash soup (B. 150) being particularly good (I have had it before here). Other comfort foods such as burgers are B. 110-130. The next section is entitled ‘For the small appet i t e ’ a n d i n c l u d e s the
universal favorite German curry sausages (B. 160) which has two full size sausages, so goodness knows what a large appetite could eat. This section has pasta as well (B. 160-180). And so to the Mains. Most are priced between B. 220290 and that includes roasts and Stroganoff. Pork, beef
German and English as well as Thai. On Fridays there are special quality buffets at B. 250 and are all you can eat offers. A team of three, we selected a Pork Cordon Bleu with mashed potatoes, a home fried potatoes with two fried eggs and a roasted pork.

and chicken feature with filet steak at a premium B. 440. This served with Café de Paris, green pepper sauce, mustard sauce or mushroom sauce. Sides are generally B. 80 for those requiring more. Some pages of popular Thai food items round about B. 140 with the items also in
Immediately obvious was the size of the portions (Germans are big eaters, I believe), with the pates full to overflowing. I also checked other diners to make sure our portions were standard – they were. The home fried potatoes with eggs was beyond the
capacity of the photographer, while the cordon bleu diner struggle to get all the way through. My choice was the roasted pork which was unbelievably tender. A knife was not needed, just the fork and the generous slices fell apart. All sitting on a bed of fried potatoes, this was an excellent choice. It needed no seasoning, perfect as it was. None of us had any room for dessert though a postprandial Jägermeister went down well.
This restaurant is very German, but Germans all speak English these days. Highly recommended. Grilled Prawns with Mango and Avocado Throw another Prawn on the Barbie! With the availability of mangoes this summer and avocados available in the supermarkets again (even if somewhat expensive), this recipe is a sensational starter. Of course, prawns are available in Pattaya all year round!
Ingredients Large prawns (shelled, deveined, beheaded and tailed) Mangoes ripe, firm Avocados ripe, firm Coriander (roughly chopped) Lime juice Olive oil Salt and pepper
500 gm 2 2 1/8 cup 3 tbspns
Cooking Method Toss the Prawns with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and 2 teaspoons salt. Set aside. Peel and dice the mango and avocado. The easy way to peel avocado is to cut it in half, down to the seed and twist between both hands and you will have two halves. Remove stone and with a spoon, scoop out the two halves. Add the chopped coriander, lime juice and the remainder of the olive oil to the mixture, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Quickly grill the prawns until the flesh becomes opaque (do not overcook or the prawn will be tough) and add to the mango/avocado. Serve at room temperature, garnish with fresh coriander and present with chilled Brut Prosecco for complete decadence.
