Sattahip slayings mastermind says victim betrayed him after 7-million-baht payment Patcharapol Panrak The confessed mastermind behind the killing of a former Phuket coyote dancer and her childhood friend at Sattahip’s Buddha Mountain says the teenager reneged on a promise to marry him after he gave her 7 million baht. Acknowledging the murder and weapons charges against him at the Pattaya Provincial Court Aug. 22, Phuket bar owner Panya Yingang, 39, confessed he killed 20-yearold Paveena Namuangrak and Anantachai Jaritrum, 21, in a jealousy-fueled rage and that had he suspected anyone else had helped her betray him, they would have been killed, too. The young woman from Kalasin had come to Pattaya with school mate and coworker Anantachai, another friend, and Panya’s associate Sayan Srisuk, 43, to celebrate her 20th birthday July 29. After visiting the Pattaya Floating Market and Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, they made the fateful stop at Khao Chee Chan to make merit at the 130-meter-tall Buddha image laser-carved into the side of the mountain.
Panya Yingang, the confessed mastermind behind the killing of a former Phuket coyote dancer and her childhood friend at Sattahip’s Buddha Mountain, says the teenager reneged on a promise to marry him after he gave her 7 million baht.
According to the final police re-enactment of the slayings Aug. 21, Paveena and Anantachai were confronted by Panya and Narong Warintarawej, who opened fire using three guns. Despite multiple misfires, the gunmen shot both dead with shots to the head and back. The slayings have shocked Najomtien Sub-district and fans of Buddha Mountain, who are horrified at the soiling of the scared place. More than 100 police officers and volunteers were needed to keep angry mobs at bay for Panya’s re-enactment.
Panya, whose nickname is “Mr. Fat Bangla”, for the road where he owns multiple bars in Phuket’s nightlife district, claimed he was in love with the girl who came to work at his Pum Pui go-go bar when she was just 17. Her family has said he made repeated romantic overtures to her over the coming year, which she rebuffed. After Panya reportedly assaulted her in public last year she left Phuket and went to work with Anantachai as a waitress in a Nakhon Sawan restaurant. Paveena’s mother told Thai media that Panya persisted,
even sending her 1 million baht over the family’s objections. Panya claimed it actually was seven million and, in return, she agreed to marry him. She didn’t, of course, and an enraged Panya vowed revenge. He said at his court hearing that it was then he decided to kill her so she could be “judged after death” for her betrayal. He had Anantachai killed
because he wrongly believed he was Paveena’s boyfriend. In fact, the youth was gay and had even taken to borrowing Paveena’s clothes. In hindsight, Panya said, he wanted to apologize to the victims’ families, although both told Thai media earlier they would never forgive him. Panya also dropped to his knees at Khao Chee Chan,
prostrating himself in front of the Buddha for disrespecting him. The defendant believes the guns misfired because of the sacrilege of the crime. After facing the charges for conspiracy to commit murder, illegal possession of a gun and bullets, and carrying a gun in public, Panya was remanded to custody at Pattaya Remand Prison to face trial.
Facebook garbage activists insert selves into Koh Larn trash crisis Keng Na Songkhla A group of Facebook garbage activists visited Koh Larn to see the island’s trash crisis, offering to see if they could help. Administrators of the Rubbish Communication page, Supada Wongsim and Kitatipat Kuawijit, visited the dump at Khao Nom, Samae Beach Aug. 23. They said they were collecting data to analyze with the goal of helping reduce odor and discomfort for residents and tourists. The visit followed a meeting between the group of housewives and Scandinavian expats and the Pattaya Business & Tourism Association three days earlier. There Supada and Kitatipat volunteered to have members spray the 50 tons of rotting garbage with effective microorganism spray to reduce the odor.

PBTA officials responded positively to the idea, but said another meeting was needed. So the Facebook campaigners spent the day chatting with a local baht bus driver who told them that Koh Larn’s trash crisis has
been going on for years, and Koh Larn Community Secretary Sorasak Thongbongpetch, who educated them on the initiatives taken by Pattaya City Hall to resolve the problem, including a contract now out for bids to remove the garbage backlog.
Traffic cops crack down on Soi Paniadchang Warapun Jaikusol Pattaya traffic police got on the ball and began ticketing and towing cars illegally parked on Soi Paniadchang following residents’ public complaints. Pol. Maj. Wanichaya Chaiyadech in hopes of solving the parking dilemma. Residents and business owners occupying the shophouses along the narrow street claim that the large condominium hasn’t supplied enough parking for its tenants, and so the tenants are parking on the street. Arut confirmed that cars parked on both sides of the street have reduced the street to one-way either direction, which was unacceptable.
He said cars have been ticketed and towed, but they always return once officers disappear. He also asserted the 100 percent of those ticketed live in Trust Condominium. He and Wanichaya agreed to educate residents that they cannot park on the both sides of street. Wanichaya insisted that the condo provides the legally amount of parking spaces – 30 percent of the total building’s units.

Jetsada Homklin Pattaya’s mayor defended a city hall unit embroiled in a bribery scandal, saying the Special Operations Unit plays a key role in keeping tourists safe. Mayor Anan Charoenchasri said Aug. 21 that the squad, comprised of municipal regulatory-enforcement officers, works with the volunteer Surveillance and Rapid Response Team to patrol
popular tourist spots in Pattaya, such as Bali Hai Pier, the lighthouse and Pratamnak Hill viewpoint. While scenic signatures for the city, they also are a magnet for pickpockets and petty thieves, he said. The SOU officers work in shifts to keep an eye on these areas. One Special Operations Unit officer was caught on video doing more than eyeing the tourists. The unidentified
officer was seen in the video that went viral last week pocketing a 1,000-baht note from an Asian tourist he had caught littering. An SOU official said the tourist should have paid the fine at city hall and the money sent to the central fund. Instead, the officer distributed among his workmates. The officer now is under investigation and will be fired if found guilty.

Contractors are working in 300-meter parcels, reopening the sand as they complete each 100 meters. Anand, one of Thailand’s most-respected elder statesman who has been active in education reform, said that, once completed, Pattaya will become a model for other erosion-ravaged beaches to follow.

The Australian organizer of a scandal-hit Pattaya pool party said no one engaged in sexual activity, despite a viral video police called “pornographic”. Coran Maloney, who runs the Kolour Entertainment firm that stages music-themed parties around Thailand, said Briton Daniel Smith, 33, and an unidentified Thai woman only simulated sex in the pool at the Aug. 18 party at the A-One Royal Cruise hotel. Maloney said both people have been banned from future events. Pattaya police, under pressure from the junta to stamp out anything publicly tawdry in a city with nearly 80 go-go bars, don’t seem to care. Even if no sex was committed and both people were fully covered, the video was still obscene, and someone has to pay.

explain the causes, prevention, screening, treatment and self-care of cervical cancer. Nearly all cervical cancer is due to HPV with two types, HPV16 and HPV18, accounting for 70 percent of cases. Between 60-90 percent of other cancers also are linked to HPV. Cervical cancer kills an average seven Thai women a day, or 6,000 a year. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease, but most victims won’t realize they have it and it could
take up to 10 years for cancer to materialize. Other factors contributing the cervical cancer are sexual activity at a young age, a large number of sex partners or with a man who has many partners, extended use of birth control pills, more than four pregnancies, and other STDs. Sasiratch said women should take a cervical screening yearly. If caught early, cervical cancer can be cured, he said.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia (AP) - A former Cambodian opposition lawmaker who has been a strong critic of the government’s handling of demarcating the border with neighboring Vietnam has been pardoned by the country’s king. Um Sam An, a member of the now-dissolved opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, was sentenced in October 2016 to 2 1/2 years in prison for making comments on the politically sensitive topic and implying that Prime Minister Hun Sen’s government failed to counter land encroachment by Vietnam, Cambodia’s traditional enemy. In a letter on Saturday, King Norodom Sihamoni said Um Sam An had been granted amnesty from his jail term. The amnesty was granted at the request of Hun Sen. In handing out the sentence in 2016, a judge said the accusations made by Um Sam An in 2015 Facebook posts aimed to cause chaos in society. The lawmaker was arrested in April 2016 in the Cambodian city of Siem Reap after having returned from a trip to the United States.

Um Sam An is the latest political prisoner to be released from jail in the last week. On Tuesday, two Cambodian journalists who had worked for U.S.-funded Radio Free Asia and who have been charged with espionage were released on bail. A day earlier, four women jailed for participating in Cambodia’s land rights movement were freed under a royal pardon requested by Hun Sen. Hun Sen cracked down on critics and opponents last year in what was seen as an effort to ensure his party
would win elections held this year. His party did win last month’s polls, though the vote was widely seen as lacking credibility. Hun Sen, who has been in office since 1985 and has held a tight grip on power since ousting a co-prime minister in a bloody 1997 coup, has a record of cracking down harshly when facing a serious challenge, then effecting reconciliation when he no longer feels threatened. The pattern keeps human rights groups and Western governments off balance and moderates their criticism.

Ashok Sharma New Delhi (AP) - India will send a manned flight into space by 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Aug. 15 as part of India’s Independence Day celebrations. He said India will become the fourth country after Russia, the United States and China to achieve the feat and its astronaut could be a man or a woman. The space capsule that will transport India’s astronauts
was tested a few days earlier. Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian to travel in space, aboard a Soviet rocket in 1984. As part of its own space program, active since the 1960s, India has launched scores of satellites for itself and other countries and successfully put one in orbit around Mars in 2014. It hopes to showcase its technological ability to explore the solar system while also using research from space and elsewhere to solve problems at home.
The $1 billion-a-year space program has already helped develop satellite, communication and remote-sensing technologies and has been used to gauge underground water levels and predict weather in the country prone to cycles of drought and flood. India won independence from British colonialists in 1947. Modi’s 80-minute speech, broadcast live from the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, comes months before national elections.

In a response to questions from opposition Green Party lawmaker Dieter Janecek, the government said “there are no protocols or plans for a possible first contact with alien life.” Justifying that stance, the government added it believes “a first contact on German territory is extremely unlikely, based on today’s scientific knowledge.” Janecek linked the government’s responses to a media article Saturday. Separately, German news agency dpa reported Saturday the classic children’s book “The Little Prince” has

NASA: Fireball over Southeast US traveled at 53,700 mph Huntsville, Ala. (AP) - NASA says a fireball that streaked across the Southeastern US sky was traveling about 53,700 mph (86,400 kph) when it lit up the night over Alabama. The Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center says numerous people saw a very bright streak early Friday. A statement and video posted on Facebook says an analysis shows the meteor was first
seen at an altitude of about 58 miles above rural Turkeytown, which is about 80 miles northeast of Birmingham. The office estimates a small asteroid about 6 feet in diameter then broke apart about 18 miles above the town of Oak Grove. It was at least 40 times as bright as the full moon at one point. Researchers are assessing whether any fragments from the rock might have hit the ground.
Washington D.C. (AP) - A privacy group said in a letter sent to the Federal Trade Commission on Friday that Google has violated the terms of a 2011 settlement because of practices exposed in an Associated Press report this week. The Electronic Privacy Information Center said in the letter to the FTC that Google’s recording of time-stamped location data even after users have turned off a setting called Location History - “clearly violates” the 2011 settlement. The center lobbied the FTC to take action on Google nearly a decade ago. That helped lead to the settlement in which Google agreed to a 20-year monitoring regime and vowed to not misrepresent the degree to which users have control over private data. Three days after the AP story was published Monday, Google altered a help page explanation but didn’t change its tracking. The AP investigation found that even with Location History turned off, Google stores user location when, for instance, the Google Maps app is opened, or when users conduct Google searches that aren’t related to location. Automated searches of the local weather on some Android phones also store the phone’s whereabouts. Critics say Google’s insistence on tracking its users’ locations stems from its drive to boost advertising revenue. It can charge advertisers more if they want to narrow ad delivery to people who’ve visited certain locations.

US regulators target Facebook Privacy group tells FTC Google on discriminatory housing ads tracking violated 2011 order
New York (AP) - Federal regulators are alleging that Facebook’s advertising tools allow landlords and real estate brokers to engage in housing discrimination. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said in an administrative complaint this week that Facebook violated the Fair Housing Act because its targeting systems allow advertisers to exclude certain audiences, such as families with young children or disabled people, from seeing housing ads. “When Facebook uses the vast amount of personal data it collects to help advertisers to discriminate, it’s the same as slamming the door in someone’s face,” HUD Assistant Secretary Anna María Farias said in a statement Friday. Service providers such as Facebook typically aren’t liable for the actions of their users. In a separate, civil lawsuit filed by housing advocates, the Justice Department says Facebook doesn’t fall under that category because it mines user data, some of which users have to provide, and customizes ads

for specific audiences. The government says that counts as being a content creator, rather than merely a transmitter of user content. Facebook said the company doesn’t allow discrimination and has strengthened its systems over the past year to prevent misuse. The company added that it is working directly with HUD to address its concerns. Facebook has an opportunity to respond to the HUD complaint before the agency determines whether to file formal charges. The HUD action is separate from the federal lawsuit, filed in March in New York by the
National Fair Housing Alliance and other organizations. The lawsuit says investigations by fair housing supporters in New York, Washington, D.C., Miami and San Antonio, Texas, show that Facebook continues to let advertisers discriminate even though civil rights and housing groups have notified the company since 2016 that it is violating the federal Fair Housing Act. It seeks unspecified damages and a court order to end discrimination. The Justice Department’s position came in a filing in that case. Facebook said it plans to respond in court.

Blood group differences – Thai and Farang A couple of weeks ago, a call went out to the farang population in Thailand for some Rh negative blood. This happens around three times a year, and each time this stimulates some of our more public spirited foreigners to ask why there is a shortage, and what can be done about it? The basic problem does come down to some of the many differences between Caucasian races and Asian races, and I’m not talking about cultural differences here. Just as there is a difference in hair types and skin types, there are differences in blood types as well. The question is often asked as to why the blood collection agencies just don’t stock up on the rarer groups, so there is always some to call upon. Unfortunately it isn’t that easy, as the ‘shelf life’ of blood is only around 30 days. Blood transfusions and blood banks only came about in the 1930’s with Sergei Yudin of Russia organizing the world’s first blood bank at the Nikolay Sklifosovskiy Institute, which set an example for the establishment of further blood banks in different regions of the Soviet Union and in other countries. By the mid-1930s the Soviet Union had set up a system of at least sixty five large blood centers and more than 500 subsidiary ones, all storing blood and shipping it to all corners of the country.
News of the Soviet experience traveled to the United States, where in 1937 Bernard Fantus, director of therapeutics at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, established the first hospital blood bank in America. In creating a hospital laboratory that preserved and stored donor blood, Fantus coined the term ‘Blood Bank’. Within a few years, hospital and community blood banks were established across the United States and in 1940 Willem Johan Kolff organized the first blood bank in Europe. With the discovery of blood groups, generally classified by the ABO system (so we are generally either A, B, O or AB) it was soon apparent that there were differences in their distribution in the world. There are many reasons for this, including susceptibility to disease of various blood groups, population drifts, inter-marriage and others. However, the end result is that simplistically the Asian population has a different distribution of ABO groups from the Caucasian population. For example, blood group B is far more predominant in the East than in the West. When you look at one of the other blood typing systems, the Rhesus grouping into Positive or Negative, even greater disparities become apparent. The Asian population has very little Rhesus Negative (0.3 percent), compared to the Caucasians (15 percent). For interest, 50 percent of Basques are Rhesus Negative, one of the highest in the world.
Recently there has been the discovery of another blood type called the Bombay group. This is a version of O +ve, that was not compatible with the usual O +ve blood. First identified in Mumbai, from which the group derives its name, so far there have been just 179 such cases reported in India. However, even in India, there have been cases where doctors could not find a donor for transfusion of the Bombay group blood that would have been necessary. Even though it has first been identified in Mumbai, the city is now believed to have just 35-40 people with the group. Consequently, you can see that when there is a need for blood for a number of injured Caucasians in an Asian country, the chances of there being sufficient blood stocks are virtually nil. If you are a farang resident in Thailand, please have your blood grouped and if you are Rhesus Negative, go on a register at the local Red Cross, or even the nearest large hospital, so that you can be called upon in emergencies. The Central Blood Register can be contacted at 02 259 7305. Currently, post disaster (or ‘between disasters’) there is no desperate shortage, but since blood does not keep ‘forever’ there will be times in the future when we will need Rhesus Negative blood, so don’t spill it in the streets, spill it at the Red Cross!
Birth control app highlights emerging health tech market Kelvin Chan London (AP) - The condom, the pill and now, the smartphone? Natural Cycles, a mobile fertility app, this month became the first ever digital contraceptive device to win FDA marketing approval. Women take their temperatures and track their menstrual cycle on the app, which uses an algorithm to determine when they’re fertile and should abstain from unprotected sex or use protection. In effect, it’s a form of the rhythm or calendar method. The Swedish startup says it’s effective and lets women avoid side effects common with other methods like birth control pills. But reports of unwanted pregnancies and investigations by authorities in two countries in Europe, where it received EU certification in 2017, have raised questions about marketing what is essentially a health monitor as a contraceptive. Natural Cycles boasts more than 900,000 users, and such fast growth underscores risks for regulators and concerns among health professionals as they grapple with the rapidly emerging market for mobile and digital health applications. “Apps are incredibly popular and there’s nothing inherently wrong about using tech to support our health,”
said Bekki Burbidge, deputy chief executive of the Family Planning Association, a British sexual health organization. “But they’re also an area that is fairly unregulated and it can be hard to sort the good, evidence- and researchbased apps from the bad.” The app is similar to hundreds of other period trackers already available, most of which are aimed at helping women conceive. But FDA approval means it can be marketed as a mobile contraceptive, giving it an edge in the mobile medical apps market, which is forecast to grow to $11.2 billion by 2025, up from at $1.4 billion in 2016, according to BIS Research. The makers of Natural Cycles acknowledge it’s not 100 percent effective and some women might still get pregnant even if used perfectly. The Food and Drug Administration regulates apps and gadgets that collect or track medical information as medical devices, though it doesn’t scrutinize many more that merely perform simple tasks like tracking calories. Marketing of contraceptive apps needs to be extremely careful to ensure that women understand exactly what they’re signing up for and the limitations, the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said in a statement.
A women demonstrates using the Natural Cycles smartphone app in London, Friday, Aug. 17. The mobile fertility app has become the first ever digital contraceptive device to win FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) marketing approval. (AP Photo/ Nishat Ahmed)
The FDA gave its approval based on data from Natural Cycles involving 15,570 women who used the app for an average of eight months. The FDA said that if the app is used correctly all the time, 1.8 percent of women would get pregnant over one year. The “typical use” failure rate, which factors in human error, was 6.5 percent. The birth control pill’s failure rate is 9 percent, while for condoms it’s 18 percent and 24 percent for fertility-awareness methods, but those figures are backed up by much more long-term data. The company’s founders, Elina Berglund and Raoul Scherwitzl, are a married couple who are both former physicists. Berglund was part of a team of scientists looking for the Higgs boson particle at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, in Switzerland. They pivoted from science to startups when they wrote the algorithm to help them have a baby and then developed an app to tap
broader demand. The app is free to download but the company charges $10 a month to use it. Its claims were called into question in January, after Swedish regulators started investigating reports that 37 women who used it became pregnant anyway. The Swedish Medical Product Agency said it’s looking into whether the number of unwanted pregnancies falls within the app’s claimed effectiveness rate, and the investigation is expected to wrap up in September. Natural Cycles said that as a condition of EU certification, it must continue monitoring user data, which it says show that the typical-use effectiveness rate remains at 93 percent. “We care deeply each and every time one of our users becomes pregnant,” the company said in a statement. “One of the ongoing challenges with all forms of contraception is that there is always a statistical chance of unintended pregnancy,
since no method is 100 percent effective.” FDA spokeswoman Deborah Kotz said the agency was aware of the Swedish reports but felt they were consistent with its knowledge of risks associated with the app. “An increase in the absolute numbers of unintended pregnancies is expected with a growing number of users,” she said. Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority, meanwhile, says it’s looking into whether paid-for Facebook posts that claim Natural Cycles is a “highly accurate contraceptive app” and “clinically tested alternative to birth control methods”
are misleading. “We have launched a formal investigation and will publish our findings in due course,” the authority said. Burbidge said more outside research into fertility apps is needed because “at the moment there’s not enough independent evidence” on their reliability. She added that women using such apps need to be motivated and aware of factors that can make it less effective, such as travel, alcohol, stress or not getting enough sleep, which can all affect temperature readings. “There’s so much you can do that makes it not perfect,” she said.

Heat wave put flamingos in the mood for 1st time in 15 years London (AP) - A British conservation charity says recordbreaking temperatures have encouraged a rare flock of Andean flamingos to lay eggs for the first time since 2003. The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust says six of the exotic birds laid nine eggs, all of which were infertile. The charity’s reserve in Gloucestershire in southwest England then gave the Andean flamingos eggs from near-relatives, Chilean flamingos, to look after. Mark Roberts, the aviculture manager at the Slimbridge reserve, says “with the Andeans in full parenting mode, we gave them Chilean chicks to bring up as their own. It’s great motivation and enriching for the birds.” The Andeans are some of the oldest animals at the trust’s Slimbridge reserve. Some arrived in the 1960s as adults. The birds are long-lived and can breed (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust via AP) into old age.
Colombian city urges a break from sex to fight heat wave Bogota, Colombia (AP) - Health officials in one Colombian coastal city have a controversial recommendation for residents trying to stay cool during an intense heat wave: Take a break from sex. Santa Marta city health secretary Julio Salas sparked a mix of laughter and disbelief this week when he urged residents of the Caribbean tourist mecca to refrain from sex during the day as part of a list of recommendations, such as staying hydrated and wearing loose clothing to prevent overheating. Sex is considered only a moderate physical activity, as much of a strain on the heart as walking up two flights of stairs, according to the American Heart Association. Temperatures in Santa Marta have soared past 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and Salas says medical facilities in the city of 600,000 have been overwhelmed with patients complaining of symptoms of heat stroke such as nausea and headaches.
Bear makes an unlikely stop in a liquor store Bristol, Conn. (AP) - A bear took a stroll into an unlikely snack venue - a Connecticut liquor store. The mid-sized creature lumbered across a parking lot in Bristol Monday afternoon, getting close enough to the entrance of Crazy Bruce’s Liquors to trigger a sensor that automatically opened an outer door. The Hartford Courant reports video from inside shows the bear walking around the foyer while an employee locks an inner door. One unassuming customer also walked into the lobby as an employee unlocked the door and ushered him in. The bear eventually figured out how to leave, and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was notified.

Police look into video of man spanking hippo at LA Zoo

Los Angeles (AP) - Police are investigating after a video shows a man spanking a hippopotamus at the Los Angeles Zoo. The video shows the man crossing a railing last week and sneaking up on two hippos, Rosie and Mara. He smacks Rosie on the rear and her mother lifts her head as the man runs off and raises his arms in gesture of victory. Zoo spokeswoman April Spurlock tells the Los Angeles Times that any unauthorized interaction with an animal is unsafe for the animal and potentially unsafe for the person. Spurlock says state law prohibits entering zoo enclosures. The zoo has posted a “No Trespassing” sign on the exhibit for the first time. Police told the newspaper they’re investigating the case as trespassing because the hippo didn’t appear to be injured.
Mexico City restaurant busted over protected tarantula tacos Mexico City (AP) - Fancy a tarantula taco for a cool $27? Not so fast, Mexican authorities say. A Mexico City market restaurant recently put the arachnids on its menu and posted a video on Facebook showing a chef torching one until blackened. The only problem: The Mexican red rump tarantula is a protected species. The federal environmental protection agency said Tuesday it was alerted to the situation via social media and seized four tarantula corpses that were ready to be served up on tortillas. The tarantula tacos were apparently on offer for 500 pesos, or 50 times the price of a basic street taco. The restaurant’s menu also features other creepy-crawlies such as grasshoppers, worms and ant eggs, which have a long tradition in Mexican cuisine, and scorpions, which are less common.

Is Kirlian photography a Russian plot?
Kirlian photography is back once more to haunt us. In the1950s, a ‘scientific’ paper published by a Russian couple produced a fad. I was one who originally thought Kirlian photography would soon die out but it hasn’t. Kirlian photography is not new, despite all claims to the contrary. It should be more correctly referred to as the ‘Kirlian effect’ which was demonstrated at the end of the 19th century and was then known as ‘electrography’. However, it did not get the publicity it needed to catch on until Russian electrical technician Semyon Davidovitch Kirlian and his wife Valentina Kirliana
published a paper in 1950 in the Russian Journal of Scientific and Applied Photography in which they described the process, now known as Kirlian Photography. The looney ‘New Age’ followers quickly seized upon this as being able to photograph the ‘aura’ of a person, and, at long last, show to the unbelievers that all the ‘bioenergies’ had a basis in ‘science’. Kirlian photography has been linked to telepathy, orgone energy, N-rays, acupuncture, ancient eastern religions, and other paranormal phenomena. I am not going to get embroiled in semantics as to whether the Kirlian effect and the aura can be used for medical diagnosis (as is claimed), or whether Reiki practitioners have sparks coming out of their fingers when they are ‘healing’. However, I can reveal what is being recorded on film, and how it happens.
Dear Hillary, My Thai GF talks all the time. I can hardly get a word in edgeways. She is always going on about what would I do if a) b) or c) were to happen. When I’m in the car I can never get her to stop, even when I say I’m busy in the traffic. Do all Thai women yak yak so much? Reg Dear Reg, I’m sorry I can’t really reply to your email because I’m talking to the girl next door… Come on my Petal, you know what Thai women are like. Tell her you’ll give her 500 baht if she stops talking for 5 minutes. Or go into another room, and tell her why. That is the easiest question I’ve had to answer all week. Dear Hillary, Money again. She’s a great girl and I like her a lot and she says she would be happy to come and live with me. I almost said “Let’s go.” But she followed that up with, “How much you going to give me?” Do they all expect to be paid? I mean I would be supplying everything – home, food and suchlike. She has a good job in an office so wouldn’t need to pay out for a living and eating. And then wants an allowance on top. Is this usual in this country? Will Dear Will, Have you ever heard of a Mia Chow? That translates into a “rented wife”. She is just using you as a free meal ticket no doubt ‘till someone with more money turns up. Not to be confused with a “Mia Noi” who is a rented girlfriend (but you pay the rent anyway)! You get nothing for nothing in Pattaya.
First off, the Kirlian effect is ‘real’, but what is being recorded is not paranormal. It is a phenomenon called ‘Corona Discharge’. Corona discharge is seen in lightning and also the sparks that come off your fingers after you walk on nylon carpets. This used to be done as a party trick by Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) who used to introduce new discoveries with his body glowing and sparks flying from his fingertips. Tesla, by the way, was a brilliant inventor, and it was
he who introduced the concept of alternating current, used today, rather than Edison’s direct current. The corona discharge that is recorded by the Kirlian photographers requires the object being subjected to an electric current and the size and color depends upon moisture that is present on the skin, and this is why initially it appeared that inanimate objects did not give off a discharge as do animate ones. But they do, it was found later.
Dear Hillary, This query comes from a farang thinking about buying a house and land up country. I know it’s supposed to be impossible, but my lawyer says it can be done through a company. My GF could hold the majority of the Thai shares and if I have 49 percent then between us we can have the majority. My GF suggested that this is how to get around the 49/51 split. I am looking at a place up-country in the GF’s village, and she says that her parents know the lawyer and the local authorities and it will all go smoothly. Does all this sound OK to you, Hillary? James Dear James, On one side is the newbie and on the other are the GF, the GF’s parents, the GF’s village and the lawyer and local authorities. You are running head first into a trap my Petal. Your 49 percent is nowhere near worthwhile against the other side which is stacked against you. Buy some running shoes, of which you can own 100 percent, and get out of there now. Dear Hillary, Money problems seem to be the story this week. A Skandi loses 787 million on BitCoin. How much money do you have rolling around without a home piggy bank to put it in? Relax, I can help you and lighten the load. Those thousand baht notes can get quite heavy. Especially when there’s a few hundred thousand up for grabs. A few hundred thousands has more buying power than the warm feelings that “love” will bring you. You want some wise words on how to live in Pattaya? No problem, just stay indoors, don’t answer the door bell, don’t drive
Terence M. Hines, a psychology professor says, “Living things (like the commonly photographed fingers) are moist. When the electricity enters the living object, it produces an area of gas ionization around the photographed object, assuming moisture is present on the object. This moisture is transferred from the subject to the emulsion surface of the photographic film and causes an alternation of the electric charge pattern on the film. If a photograph is taken in a vacuum, where no ionized gas is present, no Kirlian image appears. If the Kirlian image were due to some paranormal fundamental living energy field, it should not disappear in a simple vacuum,” he said. One team that spent some time examining the Kirlian effect has found a list of 25 factors that can effect a Kirlian photograph, including thickness of the skin, recent physical activity, and yes, mental stress. All of these affect the
amount of moisture on the skin. Other factors include voltage level, voltage pulse rate, atmospheric gasses, the internal force and angle of the object held against the film, and barometric pressure. In effect, a single person can come up with different ‘auras’ simply by changing finger pressure and the amount of moisture found in the skin. That’s the ‘science’. A very well-known Kirlian photography ‘experiment’ documents a leaf as it slowly dies. The initial photograph is taken when the leaf is freshly cut and shows a prominent glow. As the leaf gets older more photos are taken, which show that the glow is starting to weaken. This was once explained away with the lifeforce theory. However, we now know that the weakening of the glow is simply a result of the leaf losing water and drying up over time. As for the psychic energy claims, you can make up your own mind!
your car (if the police don’t get you, then the motorcycles will) and don’t walk on the footpaths during the day, and finally don’t walk on the footpaths at night. Other than those small restrictions, Pattaya is still the freewheeling city it always was. George Dear George, That’s not Soros is it? Sorry, my Petal, I don’t understand BitCoin or Block Chains or this strange thing called ‘Cryptocurrency’. I just wish I could find these hundreds of thousands of Thai Baht to stuff in the piggy bank, but being an Agony Aunt isn’t a money tree. Not even a sapling. Dear Hillary, I hear that one of your readers wants to apply the British Standard (BS) Duck Test to all women. “If a bird looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.” He must have really lost a lot to be so bitter. All women are not the same. Thai women are not the same as western ones and bar girls are a different species altogether. He should stop feeling sorry for himself and get out and enjoy the company of the ladies in the bars. That’s what they’re there for. You don’t have to buy the entire library when you want to read a book. Jimbo Dear Jimbo, Despite the 50 percent divorce rate in many countries all women are very obviously not the same. I’m not like that for one. I agree that if you want a ‘good time’, the good time girls are there to give it to you. It should also be understood that a beer bar is not a marriage agency. I have said in this column many times that you don’t go into a hardware shop if you are looking for a piece of cheese.

2-day memorial ends for Chinese victims of Thai boat tragedy
Nakhon Nayok showcases adventure tourism destinations
Tassanee Vejpongsa Phuket, Thailand (AP) - A two-day memorial observance in Thailand for a group of 47 Chinese visitors who died when their tour boat sank in bad weather concluded Thursday, August 23, with a candlelight ceremony. The day’s mass merit-making included a prayer session led by a Buddhist monk, meditation and shared vegetarian meals. Two tour boats sank off Thailand’s southern resort island of Phuket on July 5. Tourists from one boat were rescued, while the sinking of the double-decker Phoenix left 47 Chinese tourists dead. The accident was one of Thailand’s worst tourism-related disasters in recent years. Phuket officials said five people have been charged so far with responsibility for the tragedy, including the owner and two operators of the Phoenix. They have been accused of negligence causing death, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Officials said several other people are also under investigation, including some at the company that built the boat. Phuket Gov. Norraphat Plodthong said the island is implementing stricter

Avoid emotional eating if you want to lose weight Mirko Rosa provided a presentation at the August 19 meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) regarding how simple exercises and a change of eating habits can help solve the typical issues of weight loss which can take a toll on the body causing a variety of problems. Mirko, larger than life in stature and personality, gave an enthusiastic run through of events in his interesting life, from his early first visits in Thailand and living here today. Mirko, from Italy, came to Pattaya many years ago to focus on his training with a view to become a Muay Thai Boxing champion. His strength of character, physical endurance and dedication to learn the techniques paid off when he secured his title of Asia Mixed Martial Arts. Mirko explained how life can throw unexpected curve

regarding the loss of his father, who he never truly felt he had time to grieve for. All these emotions flooded back and depression set in. His strength to recover both physically and mentally needed lot of self-determination. Luckily for him, his supportive and loving wife understood what
playing and dancing with them. Mirko admits “he does like to feed them first though”. He mentioned they are fully fenced in and totally safe for protection of all in the neighborhood. Another passion of Mirko’s is running his Sitpholec gym, in Soi Khaotalo 8, where

balls at us, in his case, a normal local trip on a motor bike ended up becoming a life challenging event for him. Whilst stationary at a red light, waiting to turn at a junction, a vehicle driven by a drunk driver ploughed into the rear of his motorcycle. He was thrown off and suffered multiple injuries. Six months of pain, operations and medication luckily meant he made a full physical recovery. Although this was an outcome some are not so fortunate to benefit from, it was not without side effects. Mirko went from being a fighting fit 87kg champion to a 193kg not so fit giant. This was a demoralizing stage in his life. This massive setback also rekindled memories
he was going through, more importantly she knew what really made him tick and wanted to give him a boost. She organized and persuaded Mirko to visit some wild animals. This idea was a massive turnaround point says Mirko. He was instantly motivated and discovered an inner affinity with the psyche and power of the tigers. The energy and emotion of just being with these powerful creatures along with feeling a bond of trust slowly forming, gave him a new and life changing focus. He took this to his heart to the point where he now looks after lions at his own family home. He showed an entertaining video of him in the garden
he helps people become fitter and healthier using diet and exercise programs which he can tailor make to suit an individual’s requirements, lifestyle, and short/long term goals. Mirko ran through a series of health tips and a simple daily exercise to start the ball rolling. He explained that the multitude of diets are basically all good, but the issue tends to be more involved with overcoming our human weakness to drop off them too quick. This he called “emotional eating”. Mirko pointed out that we inherently know that we are eating unhealthy food, but we consume it anyway, usually in an attempt to make up for other things we may lack in our lives. What many people aren’t aware of is the importance of not just what we eat, but “when” we eat it. Whilst a plate of carbs
just before we go to sleep for the night will be converted and stored as fat, the same plate of carbs eaten just before a heavy days work will be burnt as energy and disappear. The other major tip was to make sure we consume enough water. Mirko said he drinks a whopping 6 liters per day, excluding coffee, tea, etc. It is a vital part of any diet strategy; water alone can help drop body weight, especially in Thailand’s heat. Mirko’s recommendation is to develop a workout program based around your personal ability, age and health condition. Training around only three times per week. He adds that weight training is a fantastic way to energize and oxygenate the muscles which can improve bad posture leading to typical issues such as back, neck, and leg pain. He said that so long as you start at a correct resistance level under proper supervision, it will solve or prevent lots of discomfort in the future. He also felt it was also a brilliant way to make new friends who are all looking to achieve similar results. Being amongst a group of likeminded people able to support each other too. Member Ren Lexander interviewed Mirko Rosa after his presentation. To view the video, visit: https://www. youtube.com/watch?v= YrryC28mw8k&t=3s The meeting concluded with the MC Ren Lexander bringing everyone up to date on upcoming events followed by the Open Forum where members and guests can ask questions or make comments about Expat living in Thailand. Strings attached
Composer Edvard Grieg on a bad hair day.
All professional musicians know that string players tend to prefer the company of other string players. In an orchestra, they rarely mingle with anyone else. It’s not that string players are snobs you understand, they are just different. And I speak as an exstring player myself. The cello, since you asked. The string section of a modern symphony orchestra often contains more musicians than the woodwind, brass and percussion put together. Brass players often like to joke amongst themselves that the string players are like a herd of sheep. In my youth, in a cold grey country far, far away I used to play in youth orchestras. When I was about thirteen,
I got a place in our county orchestra. But really, this was no great achievement. Our dog could have probably done the same thing if he’d persevered with the cello lessons. Even way back then, the brass section of the orchestra seemed a rum lot. They were loutish, unrefined country lads and I think we string players were slightly scared of them. We never spoke to them of course. In later years, when I played in national orchestras it was much the same: the brass players were often rough types. But in those days, the brass section was a preserve of the males of the species. Even today, orchestral brass sections tend to be male dominated.
Musicologists prefer to call string instruments cordophones and it’s thought that the first bowed strings were probably developed in central Asia. In the history of music, the violin and its family are relative newcomers. They didn’t appear until the second half of the 16th century when the unrelated viol family held sway. The string orchestra has since become popular with composers with the result that there’s a surprisingly large repertoire. Some composers have written entire symphonies for strings alone. A string orchestra usually contains between twelve and twenty-four musicians. They tend to be fairly small. The orchestras I mean, not the musicians. But because there are relatively few players, they can hear each other easily and often perform without a conductor. Like this one, for example.
Edvard Grieg (18431907): Holberg Suite. Op 40. Camerata Nordica String Orchestra (Duration: 18:31; Video: 720p HD) There’s a clever bit of editing at the start of this video which took me rather by surprise. Camerata Nordica is Sweden’s leading string
ensemble with most of its members from Scandinavian countries. You’ll probably notice instantly that there’s no conductor. It might take you a few minutes to realize that there’s something else missing. Yes, it’s printed music. There’s not a sheet of music in sight and no untidy clutter of music stands. Apart from the two cellists all the players are standing. This, together with the fact that the musicians have memorized the music, makes for better eyecontact and therefore more secure ensemble playing. It also makes the performance more visually stimulating. This delightful suite dates from 1884 and it was written to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the philosopher and playwright Ludvig Holberg, considered one of Scandinavia’s most influential figures. Grieg wrote the work in an eighteenth century style using the dance forms of the period. In that sense, it’s an early example of neo-classicism. The suite was originally composed for piano but during the following year, Grieg skillfully arranged it for string orchestra. Even if this music is new to you, it’s

Orphan’s tale spans globe but is syrupy Kendal Weaver Any parent would be proud of Birendra, the 8-year-old boy who is the central character of “Bindi,” the debut novel of Paul Matthew Maisano. Born in India, Birendra is bright, sweet and thoughtful, despite fateful events that take his family from him. He is so kind and good in the face of adversity, however, that his story, despite interesting twists, is often too saccharine. Birendra’s story, set mainly in 1993, shifts among three locales — the coastal Indian town of Varkala where he was born and becomes an orphan, west London where his married aunt lives and well-to-do Hollywood where his adoptive mother resides. All are rendered by Maisano with convincing and informative cultural and descriptive touches. The narrative also is built on troubling events, including the deaths of parents and the breakup of families and relationships.
One of the main characters — Birendra’s Aunt Nayana, the twin sister of his mother — is drawn with depth and complexity. An academic achiever in west London, she moves from an adulterous affair to the verge of an emotional breakdown. All of this helps give dramatic substance to the story of an orphaned boy on a journey around the globe. But too many scenes move slowly with simplistic events and dialogue; they seem written for readers about Birendra’s age. These include scenes with Madeline, the rich, self-absorbed single woman from Hollywood who adopts Birendra on a sudden impulse, and her brother, Edward, a muchneeded adult male figure in the boy’s new life in America. A novel about an orphaned boy on an uncertain trip across continents has much to recommend it. But this boy is smart and kind at the start, in the middle and at the end of the book. This is good for Birendra, but not the novel. (AP)
possible you’ll recognise the Gavotte (06:20). You can look forward to some sparkling string playing in the last movement (15:17), a lively French baroque dance known as the Rigaudon.
Peter Warlock (18941930): Capriol Suite. Melbourne Chamber Orchestra (Duration: 11:27; Video: 1080p HD) The name Peter Warlock was actually the pseudonym of the British composer and acerbic music critic Philip Heseltine. The witchlike name reflected his obsession with all things occult. It was used for all his musical works, which include over a hundred songs, a number of choral works and a few instrumental pieces. He also wrote dozens
of general music articles and reviews and contributed to many books. The Capriol Suite dates from 1926 and it’s a set of six short dances. Like the Grieg, it would be described as neo-classical because it was loosely based on melodies from Arbeau’s Orchésographie, a sixteenth century manual of Renaissance dances. Warlock was a curious figure in British music. He achieved notoriety through his unconventional and often scandalous lifestyle. He has been described an “alcoholic hellraiser” but at least he wasn’t a brass player. Incidentally, I don’t want to give the impression that I have something against brass players. On the contrary, I have met several who are utterly charming. Or so they told me.

In ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ a delightful new fairy tale
Jake Coyle Los Angeles (AP) - There are two g l i t t e r i n g p a r a d e s running in tandem through Jon M. Chu’s “Crazy Rich Asians,” a glitzy and delightful adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s 2013 bestseller. One is the blinged-out, designerlabel, crazy-rich opulence often characteristic of rom-coms yet extreme enough here to make even Carrie Bradshaw or Christian Grey blush. The other, and far more arresting pageant, is of the film’s Asian cast of various nationalities who, one after another, shame Hollywood’s regular disinterest in them by being so effortlessly dazzling. The result is a totally winning confection: a frothy fairy tale, trivial and weighty at once, that simultaneously uses tried-and-true romantic comedy convention while riotously bursting free of movie-business formula. “Crazy Rich Asians” has much of the same DNA as a host of princess tales like
“Cinderella,” but it is a radical departure, too. Chu’s film is the first contemporary-set studio film centered on an all-Asian and AsianAmerican cast in 25 years, following Wayne Wang’s 1993 adaptation of Amy Tan’s “The Joy Luck Club.” Further, studies have shown that less than 5 percent of the most popular movies in North America last year even featured a speaking character of Asian descent. Movies like this, to everyone’s loss, almost never come along. “Crazy Rich Asians” would still be an important film even if it understandably sagged with such history on its shoulders. And it’s not perfect. Like rom-coms before it, it has a blatantly superficial side, so drowning in the accoutrements of high-society Singapore that it conflates materialism with matrimony. (There is a wedding set in a church transformed into a lily pond and a bachelor party on a cargo ship anchored in international waters.) And some could reasonably quibble that Chu’s film has blind spots of its own, omitting South and Southeastern Asians for a tale entirely focused on Chinese and Chinese-American characters.
This image shows Constance Wu (left) and Awkwafina in a scene from the film “Crazy Rich Asians.” (Warner Bros. Entertainment via AP)
But it’s not for “Crazy Rich Asians” to single-handedly make up for all the studio movies that have been missing for the last 25 years. And thanks largely to its energetic ensemble, led by Constance Wu and Henry Golding, Chu’s film is a charming romp, full of heart and heartening breakout stars. Wu plays Rachel Chu, an economics professor at New York University whose Singapore-born businessman boyfriend Nick Young (Golding) suggests a trip to the Far East. “Like Queens?” she replies over dinner in Manhattan. But his proposal is that they fly back to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding and to meet
his family. It’s only as they are boarding the airplane and are led to an entire bedroom suite that Rachel realizes her long-term boyfriend is filthy, stinking rich. “We’re comfortable,” he says, a phrasing Rachel immediately recognizes as “exactly what a super-rich person would say.” Once they arrive in Singapore, it gradually dawns on Rachel that she’s on the cusp of marrying into one of Asia’s wealthiest realestate empires. Young is the princely heir of the family business, which he has temporarily fled but is still expected to soon takeover. For Rachel, it’s like stepping into a fantasy and a nightmare. She has unwittingly
landed one of Asia’s most sought-after bachelors, drawing the jealous, ever-watchful eyes of all around her, along with the piercing glare of Nick’s mother, the fiercely Old-World matriarch Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh). In their palatial estate, Rachel — a selfmade woman raised by a working-class single-parent — feels acutely like an unworthy outsider. Eleanor sneers at her “American” aspirations of “happiness” and following her “passion,” a collision with her stout beliefs of spousal sacrifice. That “Crazy Rich Asians” is a rom-com where the mothers are its most vital co-stars is one of the movie’s best attributes. Though some of
the satirical edges of Kwan’s book have been smoothed down, it remains a love story more about immigrant identity and Chinese heritage than romance. Its climactic moments are found not in a wedding aisle or in some impossibly lavish setting, but over a mahjong table and on an airplane, in coach. But what most makes “Crazy Rich Asians” such a pleasure is its spectacular ensemble of performers so often unseen on American movie screens. There is Wu, the “Fresh Off the Boat” star, who glides with grace and comic timing through the film; the BritishMalaysian newcomer Golding, who already has the sheen of a leading man for years to come; the scene-stealing Awkwafina, as Rachel’s college pal; the wry Nico Santos, as Nick’s cousin; Jimmy O. Yang, of “Silicon Valley” as a loose cannon relative; and the reliably hysterical (and a little underused here) Ken Jeong as Awkwafina’s father. Some are already well known, some are totally new, but they collectively make an overwhelming impression: Hollywood, this is what you’ve been missing. “Crazy RichAsians,” a Warner Bros. release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for some suggestive content and language. Running time: 121 minutes. Three stars out of four.
Madonna’s rambling Aretha Franklin tribute earns backlash Leanne Italie New York (AP) - The backlash was swift for Madonna’s rambling, egocentric tribute to Aretha Franklin at the MTV Video Music Awards last week, with media and Queenof-Soul fans wondering why she got the gig in the first place. Dressed in flowing black with grandiose flourishes of African jewelry, Madonna’s send-off came before she presented the video of the year award to Camila Cabello. She spoke at length about her own start in the business and her own career before thanking
Franklin for “empowering all of us. R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” Cabello then collected the biggest award of the night for her “Havana” video with a bow to Madonna, dedicating the trophy to, you guessed it, Madonna. There was a short video of early Franklin that played before Madonna said that the icon who died August 16 “changed the course of my life,” and Franklin’s “Respect” played as the night’s closing credits rolled. But there was no live musical performance honoring the legend.

Some accused Madonna, in her spiky silver headpiece, heavy necklaces and beaded bracelets, of cultural appropriation. Far more accused her of making the show’s only tribute to Franklin all about herself. “I’m so lost,” radio host Charlamagne Tha God tweeted. “I thought Madonna was supposed to be paying homage to Aretha but all I heard was her paying homage to herself.” After describing her teen exit from Detroit to make her name in show business, Madonna said at one point,
“So, you are probably all wondering why I am telling you this story.” Why, yes. Before she got to the point (she sang “(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman” acapella at an audition of yore), Madonna meandered through references to Paris, poverty, guitar lessons and finally her backside hanging out at a VMAs show after breaking a stiletto. “Does Madonna know Madonna didn’t die?”
ESPN’s Katie Nolan tweeted. Marc Snetiker of Entertainment Weekly described the speech on Twitter as “Madonna presents an Aretha Franklin tribute by Madonna featuring Madonna with Madonna and Madonna as ‘Madonna’.” The response was not unlike that from some fans of Prince when Madonna donned a “Purple Rain” suit to honor him soon after his death, at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.

Dazzling virtuosity at Ben’s Theatre Colin Kaye If you didn’t manage to get along to the recent concert at Ben’s Theater in Jomtien you missed an amazing evening. The star of the show was the young Thai prize-winning pianist Gun Chaikittiwatana, who presented a programme of music by Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Debussy and Ravel. The concert mostly featured music composed for the left hand. Some people think it’s an odd and remarkable thing that piano music exists for one hand. But there are hundreds of examples. In his book entitled One Handed: A Guide to Piano Music for One Hand the American pianist Donald Patterson identifies over two thousand such works. Interestingly, the vast majority of these pieces are for the left hand rather than the right, but I shall leave you to ponder this interesting statistic and form your own conclusions. It wasn’t until the invention of the damper pedal in the nineteenth century that onehanded piano music became a reality. The sustaining pedal and the central sostenuto pedal opened new composing possibilities because they allowed notes to sound after the keys had been released. Clara Schumann was one of the most distinguished

German pianists of her time. When in 1877 she strained her right hand, Johannes Brahms came to the rescue with a lefthand arrangement of Bach’s famous Chaconne in D minor. Gun Chaikittiwatana opened his recital with this very work, which was more than coincidence because he too has been suffering from right-hand strain. “The reason I chose to perform a programme of mainly left-hand music,” explained Gun, “is because last year I experienced tension in the right-hand thumb. It limits the flexibility of the thumb significantly, though there’s been no pain. The doctors I consulted suggested that I should stop playing with right hand for a while. It’s now recovering through various physical therapies, but the actual cause of the problem remains unknown.”
Introducing the programme himself in English, Gun then gave a measured and impressive performance of the Bach, bringing out the melodic lines clearly with a beautiful sense of phrase. His playing reminded me of Debussy’s cryptic remark that “the music lies in the spaces between the notes”. Gun then played Six Studies for the Left Hand written in 1912 by Camille Saint-Saëns. In the form of a Baroque suite, each movement presents different technical challenges. But there’s also a French lightness of touch, something in which Saint-Saëns excelled and which Gun brought out in his confident performance. One sensed the intense rhythmic vitality of music, the elegant phrasing, the rich expressive qualities and the touches of Gallic humour.
After the interval, Gun gave a poetic and thoughtful performance of Chopin’s dreamy Nocturne Op 27 No 2 and as usual played with a clear sense of phrasing and style. Gun is currently studying for his Bachelor degree in Piano Performance at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He has given acclaimed performances of Chopin’s First Piano Concerto, Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto, all with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2013, Gun received First Prize and Soloist Award from the International Chopin Piano Competition in Asia. Claude Debussy wrote his Twelve Piano Studies for Eight Fingers in 1915 and they’re not easy. Gun’s confident and technically assured

performance of Etude No 6 was virtuosic. The main work of the concert was Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. The orchestral part was played on a Yamaha digital piano by Kant Lormsomboon, another young man of extraordinary talent. Kant began studying piano at the age of five and was later a prize-winner in many competitions in Thailand. Kant graduated with a Bachelor Honours Degree in Piano Performance at Chulalongkorn University. Incidentally, you can see Gun and Kant playing this Ravel concerto on YouTube as well as Gun’s performance of the complete set of SaintSaëns studies. Before Ravel began this concerto in 1929, he poured over the Studies for the Left Hand by Saint-Saëns,
absorbing the composing techniques. The concerto was written for Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein whose right arm was amputated after he was wounded during WW1. He was incidentally, the elder brother of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Ravel’s concerto is a powerful, dramatic work with subtle jazz influences and makes extraordinary demands on the soloist. The mysterious opening gradually builds tension and leads into a jaunty, galumphing melody which dominates the work. Gun played this effortlessly, accompanied by insistent repeated choral patterns played by Kant with impeccable precision on the second piano. The concerto culminates in a monumental cadenza and Gun gave a heroic performance. The sound of the 100year-old Stieff grand piano and the Yamaha digital piano blended surprisingly well. This two-piano version of the concerto was a musical revelation, because the complex orchestral parts were revealed in striking clarity. Gun and Kant gave a truly dazzling performance which displayed brilliant virtuosity, technical assurance, precise ensemble playing and splendid musicianship. To my mind, this was one of the finest musical performances that Ben’s Theater has ever presented.

Bakri Cono - The largest privately-o By Dr Iain Corness, Features Editor & Pratheep S. Malhotra, Editor-in-Chief Ship building has its own individual problems, of which salt water corrosion (electrolysis) is but one of them. Philippe Guenat, Managing Director of PMG Marine Complex pointed out that when you are on land and there is a plumbing problem you just pick up the phone. When you are on a yacht 3,000 miles from shore who can you ring? To get over potential problems like that, it is necessary to employ good design,
use first class equipment and accessories, and ensure good build quality. Philippe Guenat is of the conviction that building a yacht is comparable to building an aircraft, and states very strongly, “There is no room for errors; things cannot break or leak.” One thing you must always be aware of, in European seas you can find shelter and qualified workers every 25 nautical miles, so in case of emergencies there is always help nearby. But here in the Gulf of Thailand, once you leave the marina in Pattaya and if for any reason you need maintenance the nearest

Philippe said, “Bakri Cono was established in 2004 and since day one, we spared no effort to obtain our yacht building license from the Thai government under the auspicious of the Board of Investment (BOI). This allows us to use our special tax-exempt privileges to import the best quality in technology and materials for the production of our yachts. “We started with only 20 employees and by 2013 we were employing 35 highly skilled shipbuilders. Before then the company concentrated on the local Thai market. That same year we decided to turn to the international market and increased the production from only 1 boat per year to orders for 2 or even 3 boats per year. “In early 2017 Bakri Cono started to get orders for bigger and more sophisticated yachts, so we had to grow with the demand. And thus, our shipyard grew into a full-fledged ship manufacturing facility. I am proud to say that today Bakri Cono’s production capability has increased to 8 yachts per year varying in size from 41 to 105-feet.” Bakri Cono has jealously protected its work force, which has quadrupled over the past 10 years, now has a professional team of nearly 100 craftsmen and women who work meticulously to create their masterpieces. Philippe proudly says, “Most of them are graduates of the world-famous Thai Marine Vocational School and to my knowledge, Thailand is the only country in the world that has a proper and dedicated Marine School providing professional courses in ship-building.” The students are seconded to Bakri Cono by the schools to gain work experience with a top shipyard. On the job training and learning are provided by Bakri Cono’s very own professional instructors. To assist the students, Bakri Cono even provides billeting and transport for the apprentices. Students are recognized by the color of their shirt, which is different to the regular outfits worn by staff who act as teachers and mentors throughout their apprenticeship. Besides its core business

of building boats, Bakri Cono Shipyard is dedicated in the transmission of its know-how. Expertise in the business can only be acquired through being in constant contact with specialists in the field and total immersion in a fully equipped environment exclusively focused on its activity. The transmission of knowledge will effectively take place whilst in the heart of the action and in the greatest of respect for the profession. Bakri Cono Boat Building Academy (BCBBA) provides every determining factor to offer serious training, warranting excellence in the profession. Upon successful completion of the course, it is possible to continue working at the shipyard or at any of its associated partners. Under the supervision of Bernard Lamprecht, Shipyard Managing Director with the assistance of the heads of the various departments within the company, the students have the opportunity to practice on the on-going realizations in the shipyard. To complete this course based on European teaching methods, they also undergo some theory classes in between the practical courses. In 2011 Bakri Cono invested time and finances to adopt the state-of-the-art technologies and know-how to enhance their shipbuilding operations. “We were way ahead of our times,” Philippe said. “I have always had a passion and love of solar energy, so in 2012 Bakri Cono built the first 8 kw/h solar assisted yacht in the world, the Heliotrope 65. In 2013 we upgraded our electronic system from the
traditional breaker system to the more advanced computerized CZone digital switching technology similar to the technology used in building modern aircraft.” Ship building has been a human endeavor for over 4,000 years, but it is only recently that new technology has been applied to build quality. One of these is vacuum extraction of the ‘sandwich’ of laminated layers, pulling the resins through the laminations resulting in a thinner panel, but stronger and greater longevity. Unfortunately, this handson approach does also result in more expensive items, but it is a ‘must’ where quality, weight and strength are concerned. An additional plus for this type of construction is that there is no fiberglass dust strewn all over everything in the shipyard, small particles being vacuumed up during the extraction process. Vacuum Infusion reduces fumes and dust produced by regular methods to less than 20% of those discharged into the air by traditional methods. Bakri Cono acquired this technology and thus in 2013 became one of the very few shipbuilders in the world to have successfully introduced and utilized the ‘Total vacuum infusion technology’ and have completely stopped using plywood and other types of Balsa wood which is still too often used by some of the large European mass boats builders.
One year later in 2014 Bakri Cono was recognized as the first and only shipyard in South East Asia to use 100% vacuum infusion technology in the manufacturing of their boats and yachts for which they received the Boats & Yachts Thailand Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Marine Industry and Boat Safety. The following year, Bakri Cono Shipyard was awarded the ‘Maritime Company of the Year 2015 (Asia)’ at the MIS.M Maritime International Showcase Malaysia. “We have continuously developed and improved our technology to be the most advanced in ship building,” Philippe said. “For example, we enhanced the performance of the generators which supply electrical power in the boats by increasing the output from 12 volts to 24 volts. This ensures that that power consumption is lower and there are lesser incidents of loss of power. “In addition, reducing the manual control of power and using computerized power management also creates a balance of power consumption by regulating the right amount of power for the right purpose and needs. “Our innovative design for the hulls and propellers has proven that fuel consumption is reduced by over 20% in comparison to the regular, yet often outdated boat building techniques.

-owned shipyard in South East Asia “Whenever possible we install solar panels on the roof of the yachts which makes the vessel energy independent. Normal generators burn an average of 10 liters of gasoline per hour or around 240 liters per day to create electricity. Not to mention emitting bad smell, smoke and pollution. Solar energy is efficient, clean and environmentally friendly, making it unnecessary to burn any fuel to run your engines when anchored near the shore of a dream island or moored at blissful remote marinas. “The technology we use at Bakri Cono is eco-friendly. It took 3 years of tests and the most stringent inspections by the authorities before we received our full-fledged yacht building license from the Thai government. We can proudly claim that we are the only yacht builder in Thailand officially recognized as such.” Philippe continued, “Yacht builders exist as a result of human experience and passion and creativity. Did you know that in western countries, nearly 62% of the cost of the vessel comprises of the salaries and related of shipyard employees? But it is fortunate that in Thailand the skilled boat builders’ salaries is only a fraction of those in developed and industrialized nations. And this allows us to spend the right amount of time on the finishing details and quality control.”

The build quality of the Bakri Cono yachts is certified by close examination by international certifying organizations including the European CE, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), Lloyd’s Register Certification, Bureau Veritas of France and DNV GL of Germany. Even though local yachts are not required to meet international standards, Bakri Cono applies the same standards to all yachts built in its shipyard in Rayong, Thailand, and

every yacht must pass a stringent quality inspection by a highly qualified team of independent inspectors before it is released to a new owner. “Bakri Cono encourages individuality,” Philippe said, “where bespoke design features are ordered to make the new yacht a personal item, and not a mass-produced boat. One example of this was where a client ordered a gold colored yacht, so we set about to produce this unique color by mixing gold dust in yellow paint to create the right tone as desired. One can only hope that the barnacles appreciate just what they are stuck to! “Our clientele is from all over the world who seek customized yachts designed and built to their specifications. Our international team of designers and technicians are Swiss, French, South African, German, Italian, American and South American nationals. This combination makes us a truly international yacht building company. “We build mono-hulls and catamarans. In practice the

catamaran has 40% more space than a monohull and they have been proven to be safer because of their ‘two legs’ compared to one in the water. The catamarans can also sail closer to the beach because their shallow draft allows you to explore areas and even sail right up to your dream beach which many monohulls cannot do. Because of that advantage, they are easier for quick underwater maintenance. Another plus is that most catamarans can be dried out at low tide on a flat area of sand or solid ground, resting comfortably on her stubby small keels.” In the grounds of Bakri Cono, there is a special, almost Olympic size, swimming pool, not for the staff on hot days, but each new boat is given on-site flotation tests, making it possible for a “dry run” for engines, electronic equipment and navigation items. Rather than towing the boats out to sea, all the seaworthy testing can be carried out on site. During this time, Bakri Cono also received theAsian Maritime Award for Company of the Year and two of their vessels were nominated for awards by Royal Institution of Naval Architects UK (RINA) To add another feather in their cap, in 2015 Bakri Cono acquired 20,000 sqms of beachfront property adjacent to their shipyard, which makes them the largest privately-owned shipyard not only in Thailand, but in all of South East Asia. Philippe Guenat has been a patron of the arts for many years, with sculptures and paintings hanging in the office spaces; however, nothing really beats Bakri Cono’s three cows grazing in the front garden area. These were creations made in Switzerland that Philippe imported to Thailand. An expensive procedure. “I don’t think I’d do it again,” said Philippe, while standing proudly with his saintly painted cows. (Photo right) A true Swiss, Philippe stands proudly with one of his three saintly-painted cows grazing in the garden of Bakri Cono Shipyard.
Bakri Cono Shipyard is now well known throughout the maritime industry in the world as well as Thailand. With the growth of the business in 14 years, it is now firmly on
track to continue the upward trend. Rayong should be honored to have an internationally recognized business such as Bakri Cono in its province.

The Axcel Electronics team.
Carl Sellick, Vice Chairman of BCCT, David Wright from Pattaya Dive Center and a representative from Eastern Engineering Services co., Ltd.
The British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT) hosted the monthly multichamber of commerce event for August. The hotel sponsor and venue was the Pullman Pattaya Hotel G which laid on a sumptuous feast of well-known British fare. This ranged from roast beef and Yorkshire pudding to fish & chips and many other signature dishes. All of this was over seen by Simon Angove, the new general manager and his excellent staff. Before the networking event started, the BCCT asked Andrew McBean, MD of PKF Thailand, to cover the topic of, “Thai Labour Law, Work Permits and Visas: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. PKF provided two excellent presentations. The first was from John Casella, who is a partner of PKF, whilst the second came from Chutinun Wannapirun, director of PKF Corporate Legal Services. Over sixty attendees heard about, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and went away with much food for thought. PKF Thailand has just opened up on the Eastern Seaboard and is the first of the major accounting & auditing, business advisory companies to have a fully staffed office in Pattaya. The main event began as soon as the briefing had ended. The main sponsors
were Axcel Electronics, Lucy Electric, Mazars, Budget Car Rental and Garden International School. The representative chambers were: BCCT, AmCham, AustCham, Beluthai, CanCham, GTCC, NTCC, NZTCC, SATCC and STCC. All were well represented and it was good to see the New Zealand Chamber take part with President Warren Boyes coming down from Bangkok and the local director, Steve Fraser, taking any and all questions on how to beat the All Blacks. Simon Matthews, the immediate past chairman of BCCT, hosted the draw and led the events on stage. It was also good to see the new executive director of AmCham, Heidi Gallant, in attendance as well as some old, familiar faces like Greg Watkins (BCCT) and Brendan Cunningham (AustCham). Helmut Buchberger was also there from the SingaporeThai Chamber of Commerce and Allan Riddell and Graham Macdonald were leading the South African charge. Jack Levy, MD of Macallan Insurance Broker, was seen chatting to Tom Thompson of Pacific Cross and Carl Sellick of Lucy Electric was bemoaning the fact that he may miss some of Rugby Championship due to so much travel. All in all an excellent event which was thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended. The next multi-chamber event will be on Friday, 21st September and hosted by the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce – the venue has yet to be confirmed.

Hayes back with a bang Tuesday we went to Greenwood where the A & C course was played. The track was as usual in an excellent condition and it’s always a pleasure to play here. We had perfect weather conditions but this course is not easy and we had no standout results. Neil Harvey played the most consistent and won with 37 stableford points. Second was Willem Lasonder with 34 points and in third was Martin Hayes with 33. The near pins went to Phill Waite, Dave Smith and Neil Harvey.

golf course is waking up to the fact that if you reduce the price you may very well increase the numbers. With today’s numbers we had 2 flights with three places in each and all novelties to be in play. A Flight saw late entrant Rudy Regenass take the honours with the best score for the day, 37 points. Coming in second we actually had to go to the count-back as two players ended up with 36 points overall, with Peter Mac (on his last outing with us) getting the nod with a stronger back-nine than Steve Younger. B Flight saw Shane (the Jock) Young take first place with 35 points, two clear of his closest rival Andrew (Turtle) Allen. Third place on the podium, with again having his last hit with us this trip, was ‘The Rock’ himself, Rocky Lawson.

Monday, August 20, Silky Oak - Stableford We had a few discussions about which tees to play off but we ended up going for the whites. In the high season we will experiment with division 1 off the yellow tees and division 2 off the whites. Bill Kana, playing off 20, recorded his best ever score with us today as he racked up 25 points on the front nine before falling away slightly on the inward half to finish with 38 overall and take top spot on the podium. John Doyle was close behind in second on 37 points and Paul Butler beat Frank Grainger on a 22/17 backnine count-back for third after both shot 35 points each. No near pins in division 1 today but Alan Bissell and John Seton were the winners in division 2. Bill Kana birdied the 14th for the only ‘2’ of the day to scoop the division 2 pot.

Paul Butler, always in the reckoning, came in second with 36 points while Nik Evans was third with 34 and in fourth place with 32 points was Shane Tutton. Marc Brunner claimed the near pin awards on the 5th and 15th and only one person in division 2 was able to do likewise, that being Leo Adam on the 15th. There were no ‘2’s recorded today.
Friday, August 24, Eastern Star Stableford Back to two divisions today with the equal cut set at
16-19.8 and 20.1+ and in his last game with us before his return to Australia, Shane Tutton topped division 1 with 40 points. Frank Kelly beat his arch-rival Paul Butler to second place with a 17/ 16 back-nine count-back after they both shot 34 points today. Tony Thorne came in with 38 points to win division 2 ahead of Glyn Evans in second on 34 and John Doyle finished third with 33 points. Paul Butler was the only division 1 player to claim a near pin (on the 3rd), and in division 2 there were near pin awards going to Douglas Clark, John Doyle, James Kelly and Tony Thorne.

Monday, August 20, Silky Oak - Stableford 1st David Booth (16) 38pts 2nd Colin Smith (13) 34pts 3rd Mitch Ikeda (19) 34pts We started the week off at Silky Oak where the course staff are still struggling to provide decent greens to putt on. They have had a problem with the greens for quite some time now and although they’re not getting any worse, they’re not getting any better either. This obviously suited David Booth who has a love/hate relationship with his putter and prefers to smash the ball to the hole, eliminating any subtle breaks. David scored an impressive 38 points and took the number one spot for the first time since June 2017.

1st Roger Wilkinson (16) 41pts 2nd Gary Bloomfield (19) 39pts 3rd James Kwon (16) 38pts Tuesday at Phoenix and the fire in the belly was certainly aglow as Roger Wilkinson stood poised on the first tee. His last outing at Phoenix was two weeks ago where he only managed to score a measly 26 points. His regular caddie of over ten years was disgusted in his performance and must have given him a real roasting as today he set the course on fire with an incredible 41 points. With the status quo returned they walked off the 18th arm in arm, a truly formidable team.
1st Nino Dinardo (19) 35pts 2nd Roger Wilkinson (15) 34pts 3rd New Boysen (21) 34pts Friday and the boys were out in force at Burapha’s A & B courses. So much so that for the first time this week we required two flights. In division one it was Freddy Starbeck who led the charge with a superb 40 points. Freddy, who has a standing “loser pays for the round” bet with his playing partner Christian has been on a losing streak lately and was contemplating taking out a second mortgage to cover his loses, but this was put on hold as he destroyed his fellow Dane today. Christian limped home a massive fourteen shots behind and even had to borrow money off Freddy to pay for his caddie.

Parker peerless at Riverside PSC Golf from The Bunker Boys Monday, August 20, Bangpakong Riverside G.C. – Stableford 1st Geoff Parker (15) 43pts 2nd Jimmy Carr (15) 36pts 3rd Tony Robbins (24) 35pts The smallest group this year assembled for the first game of the week at the Bangpakong Riverside course which, as always, was in magnificent condition with well-grassed fairways and smooth slick greens. A number of changes are taking place here with trees being removed in some places as well as grassed areas and being replaced with waste areas. It is difficult to fathom the rationale behind this as in most people’s opinion it detracts from the course and does not add to it. Some are even placed in blind spots from the tee and thus create a bit of unfairness for those unaware of the changes. Once again the wind was strong today; it seems we are now in the windy season prior to monsoon rains. Geoff Parker came roaring back to form today with an exceptional round of fortythree points, sixteen points on the last five holes and a great score in the conditions.
Geoff Parker.
Second went to Jimmy Carr a full seven strokes adrift on thirty-six, with Tony Robbins a further stroke back. Near pins went to Jimmy Carr, Geoff Parker, and two to Tony Robbins.
Wednesday, August 22, The Emerald – Stableford 1st Paul Lanzetta (7) 36pts 2nd Raleigh Gosney (20) 33pts 3rd Geoff Cox (18) 32pts The Bunker Boys made a return to Emerald today after an absence of about two months. On arrival we found the course was clear, the weather fine but humid, so we looked set for a good speedy round. The course was in its usual condition, well grassed but with greens
a little on the slow side. The rough has been allowed to grow up in many areas so anyone offline was severely punished. We had a bit of a USA coup today with Raleigh introducing a fellow countryman and new member Paul Lanzetta, who took the chocolates in his first visit with a score of thirty-six points off a seven handicap. Not to be outdone, Raleigh himself came in second with thirty-three points, while the consistent Geoff Cox took third place on thirty-two. Near pins went to Paul Lanzetta, Geoff Parker, and Jimmy Carr.
Friday, August 24, Eastern Star – Stableford 1st Geoff Cox (18) 33pts 2nd Jimmy Carr (15) 31pts 3rd Peter Allen (28) 30pts The clubhouse at Eastern Star is still undergoing extensive renovations and refurbishment so conditions are a little difficult at present. The course is still in good condition but today a very still breeze made for more difficult than normal scoring. Usually at this course scoring is on the low side and today was no different with the bulk of the group failing to reach thirty points. Today’s winner was Geoff Cox with a modest score of thirty-three and Geoff was also the only one to reach a par-three green and therefore collected all the near pin booty. Second place went to Jimmy Carr on thirty-one points while Peter Allen stayed in the race for golfer of the month claiming third spot on thirty points.
Nino Dinardo.
Mountain Shadow is not an easy course but there is no excuse for the scores that were posted today. Not one player got near their handicap and a ridiculous twenty eight points won the day. Mitch Ikeda, who is an absolute gentleman and is extremely well liked, was gob-smacked when he was announced the winner. Mitch accepted his first ever TRGG win with the grace and humility that is synonymous with his culture.
In division two the scoring was not as high but the competition for first place was just as fierce. Nino Dinardo, who bears a striking resemblance to Leonardo Dicaprio with the wit and charm to match, put up a Titanic struggle and produced an Oscar winning performance to earn the right to stroll down the red carpet to the applause and accolades of his thespian peers.
Saturday, August 25, Crystal Bay Stableford 1st Mitch Ikeda (19) 38pts 2nd Jim Cleaver (15) 37pts 3rd Carmen Hurdon (11) 35pts We closed the week with a trip to Crystal Bay where Mitch Ikeda, who had just recently recorded his first TRGG victory, went on to post a second first place finish with an impressive 38 points.

Big guns fire at Pattavia PSC Golf from the Tropical Golf Group Tuesday, August 21, Bangpakong Riverside - Stableford Middle of the month and once again we were scheduled to test our golfing skills against a fine venue in the shape of Bangpakong Riverside. The organizers had decided to test the group by playing from the longer blue tees and, with very cloudy conditions in the area, they allowed “ballin-hand” through the green. Generally the group plays here from the white tees at 6319 yards so how would they do with an additional 360 yards to contend with? All the major work seems to be done here and the course is ready for the coming high season. The only comment would be that the new areas of sand, some with trees or grass within, need to be so identified to avoid confusion over whether that sandy area is a bunker or a waste area. The fairways are in great condition, the greens running at a reasonable place and true. With 40 points, John Davis (c/h 12) topped the group. John has been playing excellent golf recently as his Handicap Index steadily drops. Following John were Brian Perish (12), 38pts, Don Carmody (29), 36pts, and Gordon Clegg (28) with a great back 9, edging out Dick Warberg (22) on 35pts for the final spot. To round out

the accolades, Warberg took the best front 9 score while Steve Truelove recorded the best back 9 score.
Friday, August 24, Pattavia – Stableford This Friday we headed out to one of our favorite and regular haunts, namely Pattavia. A tidy fourteen golfers made the trip, a perfect grouping of two 3-balls and two 4-balls, so pace of play was excellent. Weather was perfect and the course empty, putting everyone in a hopeful mood. What to say again about Pattavia, a scenic course in excellent condition at a fair price. If there is ever any gnashing of teeth it is always about the quite slick and sloped greens. Some pin positions seem torturous, and it’s a rare course where after the round people will proudly brag that they “only
3-putted six greens”. Well, the not too difficult course has to defend itself, and despite comments about the “unfair” greens every time we visit, winning scores are usually on the high side. Slick greens? Unfair? Not to long hitting Paul Sharples (c/h 18) who regularly flies in from Oman, wins the competition, and then flies out again as quickly as he comes. With a numbing 43 points Paul was the man today. Not too far back however was steady Mashi Kaneta (15) with a very impressive 41 points. These guys can hit and putt. Next came Frank Xin (30) who edged out Gordon Clegg (28) on count-back at the 36 point mark. Don Carmody and Mick Coghlan each put together an excellent nine with 20 points to claim the consolation prizes.

Sompis wins 2018 Jaa Memorial Cup
Jaa was a respected and well-liked caddy at Khao Kheow.
Jo McArdle (left) presents the Jaa Memorial trophy to Sompis Sam-ang-in.
Another year has gone round and it was time once again for what was the sixth Jaa Memorial Cup here at Khao Kheow on Tuesday, August 21. This annual event is held in memory of Jaa who was a caddy here for many years and whose unfortunate death occurred at the
tender age of twenty six years. The tournament is restricted to caddies from Khao Kheow, all of whom would have been very good friends of Jaa and every year they do her proud with the standard of golf they produce, as Jaa herself was a very accomplished golfer as well as being an excellent caddy.
This is a very big event for the caddies as it is the only day of the year which they are allowed inside the clubhouse for a meal and the presentation. While some of the ladies are very good golfers most of them are out there just to have fun and to prove that it doesn’t matter what club you use as long as you know how far you are going to hit it. One of the ladies got a near pin on a short par three by using her driver! As we leave the organizing and the running of the

competition to the management here they decide to award the Memorial Cup to the lowest gross score and once again for the sixth year in succession we got a another new winner. This year it was the turn of Miss Sompis Sam-ang-in who shot a gross seventy-eight off a
handicap of seven. Last year Sompis came second and this year the winner of last year’s competition came second. This was Miss Suwanna Kerdjaroen who had a gross eighty-three off a handicap of fourteen. Third place went to Miss Jariya Chareonsuk with a gross eighty-eight off
a handicap of eighteen, all excellent scores and even better than last year. We had four near pins which were won by Miss Prapai, Miss Patchanattha, Miss Kamolthip and Miss Somporn, and we also had two long drives which went to Miss Suwanna and Miss Prapai.
Pierrel still on a roll PSC Golf Pattaya Links Golf Society Wednesday, August 22, Burapha - Stableford A Flight 1st John Pierrel (12) 40pts 2nd Kevin LaBar (14) 36pts 3rd Paul Smith (3) 35pts B Flight 1st Dave Arataki (29) 36pts 2nd Paul Chesney (20) 36pts 3rd Tip Briney (22) 36pts We had never played the combination of A & C at Burapha before, but we did today. Both nines were in typically good condition with terrific fairways and good speed on the greens, even though there was a hint of residue sand on some.
The rough here is usually pretty difficult and, although it had been cut down a little, still caused a few problems. No problem, however, for the very in-form John Pierrel. Fresh from playing his important part in the successful “Links Bar” team at Pattaya Matchplay he sprinted away from the rest with a big 40 points score card to take out “A” flight and, not for the first time, donned the Green Jacket. We mentioned recently that Kevin LaBar has been in contention most games this trip, and here he was again, taking second spot
with a well played 36 points, followed by the ever reliable Paul Smith with 35 off his lowly #3 handicap. Dave Arataki has had his share, and then some, of “wigs” and silly hats”. But how the worm has turned and he took out “B” flight today with a strong 36 points to win on countback. The second and third places also scored 36 points each and both are also recent “wig” wearers. Paul Chesney pipped Tip Briney for second. Good job from all three. The near pins went to Kevin LaBar (A3), Colin Service (A6), John Pierrel (C5), and Pete Seil (C8) while the consolation best nines for non-winners were recorded by Wayne Peppernell (front, 20pts) and Maurice Roberts (back, 21pts). On Monday, Bill Markwell was the “wig” winner, but failed to return to the bar, so
his mate Maurice Bowman “modelled” it. But good things come to those who wait. Bill again had the least number of points and this time he was the model. This “silly hat” thing has taken on many connotations in its short life. This time Maurice Roberts decided to use it to take revenge on those who voted for him to wear it recently, and the first victim was Toby Glass. Finally, the fans were turned down and the beautiful birthday cake arrived for our co-organiser, Len Jones. He was so excited that he ran inside and “rang the bell”.

John Pierrel (center) with Toby Glass (left) and Bill Markwell.
Masa Sugaya (centre) with Dave Arataki (left) and Colin Service.
On Friday we travelled to Eastern Star for another tough test of golf on a course in fine condition despite recent rains. Fairways were dry, with some run and the formerly much-maligned greens were running true and with some pace. Bunkers were well tended and the rough was its challenging best. Add to the mix the “OB left and water right” equation and the group was set for some challenging golf. Six playing groups in one flight took the field on time and found progress good throughout. Scores were good and third place went to Aussie Mike Tottenham with a level par 36 points, with Donal McGuigan scoring 38 points, losing on countback
to old friend Masa Sugaya with his winning 38 points. Alan Walker took the award for the best non-winning front nine of 18 points whilst Paul Chesney’s 20 points on the back nine gave him some cheer as well. A sadly out of form Dave Arataki received the wig for his mediocre round whilst Mr Phil delighted the golfers at the presentation with the choice of Colin Service for the “silly hat”. Colin started his round with a lost ball off the first tee and it never really got better on the front nine, ten points being all he could muster. Colin’s halcyon rounds of a few weeks ago now seem all but a memory! Near pins went to Phil Davies, Len Jones and Chris Barker (2).

So it was off to the drinks stop for about 40 minutes and then we were out again and had no more interruptions. We started out as 5 groups but that turned into 4 as not having carts on the course stopped some from playing. There was a count-back for the minor podium places between Greg Ritchie, Bill Marsden and Graham Beaumont, all on 34 points, with Greg taking fourth, Bill third and Graham second. We had a runaway winner with the lovely Sasicha scoring 40 points to take the top spot. There were two ‘2’s recorded. coming from George Way and Gerard Lambert.

Friday, August 24, Burapha – but fortunately the expects over 3 holes and slipped to Stableford were 30% wrong, however the humidity seemed to stop the ball going quite as far as usual. The greens did not help your score today for they had been scarified, which meant that putting against or across the lines was slow and the ball had to be hit – but greens maintenance is essential so get used to it. Despite the supposed problems, the scores were very good. Miss Am lost her way a little with only 2 points

Now, those with preconceived ideas about how tough Burapha A and B loops are from the white markers, they will be surprised by the work being done on the greens which are being reduced in size by about 2 feet all around the outside, which makes the 1st hole on the B side a very tough shot, especially as you are normally hitting a long iron or even a wood for your approach.

Genoa fans honor bridge victims Vettel wins Belgian GP to trim with 43 minutes of silence rival Hamilton’s F1 lead Jerome Pugmire
Genoa fans display a banner to honor the 43 people who lost their lives when the Morandi highway Bridge collapsed last Aug. 14, prior to the Serie A soccer match Genoa and Empoli at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa, Italy, Sunday, Aug. 26. (Simone Arveda/ANSA via AP)
Andrew Dampf Genoa, Italy (AP) - For the first 43 minutes of their club’s Serie A opener, Genoa fans remained silent last Sunday. That was one minute for each of the 43 victims of the Morandi Bridge collapse in the port city this month. In the 43rd minute, spectators began applauding respectfully as the names of those who died in the tragedy 12 days earlier were listed on a giant screen inside the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Then the fans started chanting “Genova, Genova” — the Italian name of the city. By then, Genoa had taken
a 2-0 lead courtesy of early goals from Krzysztof Piatek and Christian Kouame, both of which were set up by Genoa captain Domenico Criscito. Genoa won 2-1 after Samuel Mraz pulled one back for Empoli in stoppage time. Criscito had entered the pitch before kickoff with Cesare Cerulli, the 11-yearold son of bridge collapse victim Andrea Cerulli. “The first thought always goes to the tragedy,” Genoa coach Davide Ballardini said. “Then you train but every day you take a road or something else that reminds you of it. Our legs and heads were heavy.”
Criscito and the other Genoa players wore T-shirts that read “Genoa nel cuore” — Genoa in the heart — with a design featuring a heart in the middle of the bridge span. There was also a minute of silence observed and Genoa wore black ribbons on their shirts while the space usually reserved for sponsors was left blank. A huge banner hanging from the stadium’s upper deck read, “In silence for you, hurt 43 times in the heart. Get back on your feet proudly and become splendid again!” Genoa’s opening match at AC Milan scheduled for last weekend was postponed as the city was still in mourning.
No 1 Halep loses in 1st round at US Open Howard Fendrich New York (AP) —Simona Halep made a quick-as-canbe exit from New York on Monday, overwhelmed by the power-based game of 44th-ranked Kaia Kanepi 62, 6-4 to become the first No. 1-seeded woman to lose her opening match at the U.S. Open in the half-century of the professional era. Halep blamed openinground jitters, a recurring theme throughout her career. The reigning French Open champion has now lost her first match at 12 of 34 career major appearances, a stunningly high rate for such an accomplished player. “It’s always about the nerves,” said Halep, who was beaten in the first round in New York by five-time major champion Maria Sharapova in 2017. “Even when you are there in the top, you feel the same

nerves. You are human.” She also offered up an explanation tied to this particular site. “Maybe the noise in the crowd. The city is busy. So everything together,” said Halep, who was coming off consecutive runs to the final at hard-court tuneup tournaments at Cincinnati
and Montreal. “I’m a quiet person, so maybe I like the smaller places.” Her departure means she can’t stand in the way of Serena Williams, who could have faced Halep in the fourth round. Williams, the 23-time major champion who missed last year’s U.S. Open because she gave birth on Sept. 1.
Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium (AP) — Sebastian Vettel made a crucial early overtaking move on Lewis Hamilton to win the crash-marred Belgian Grand Prix last Sunday and trim his rival’s overall lead. Hamilton started from pole position for a record fifth time at Spa, and a record-extending 78th in Formula One, with Vettel second on the grid. But Vettel has a knack for quick starts, and nudged his Ferrari past Hamilton’s Mercedes on the first lap with a smart move down the left. “I had a great start. I knew my chance would come,” Vettel said. “Timing is crucial and I managed that perfectly I thought.” It came moments after Fernando Alonso’s McLaren flew through the air and landed on top of Charles Leclerc’s Sauber. Leclerc, unharmed, was likely spared a head injury by the protective halo device surrounding the cockpit area of F1 cars. Vettel finished about 12 seconds clear of Hamilton, with Red Bull driver Max Verstappen an impressive third after starting seventh. Vettel’s 52nd career win closes the gap to Hamilton to 17 points heading into this coming weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza — Ferrari’s home. Moments after his victory, Vettel removed his steering wheel and held it aloft, almost like a trophy, as he stood on his car to celebrate. Then he jumped into the arms of his mechanics and grabbed a Ferrari flag. With eight races remaining, it was a crucial win to halt Hamilton’s momentum. all-time wins behind Hamilton (67) and Michael Schumacher (91). “He drove past me like I wasn’t even there on the straight,” Hamilton said, expressing concern for Ferrari’s greater speed. “Congratulations to Seb.” Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas, starting near the back after being penalized for too many engine changes, overtook Sergio Perez late on to place fourth. Brooke Henderson wins CP Canadian Women’s Open Regina, Saskatchewan (AP) — Brooke Henderson’s adoring home fans chanted her name and sang “O Canada.” Her father raced onto the 18th green to shower her and sister/caddie Brittany with champagne. Delivering in front of a huge gallery at chilly and rainy Wascana Country Club, Henderson had a lot to celebrate after becoming the first Canadian to win the country’s national championship in 45 years. She closed with a 7-under 65 for a fourstroke victory last Sunday in the CP Women’s Open. “This was like the first time ever that I’ve played my absolute best in front of the hometown crowd and on home soil,” Henderson said. “It’s just a great learning experience, and it has a really happy ending.” The 20-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ontario, finished in style on the par-4 18th, crushing a drive and hitting a 69-yard approach to 3 feet to set up a birdie. When the putt fell, Henderson raised her arms and hugged Brittany as father Dave ran onto the green and doused them with bubbly. “Ten minutes from when I hit my second shot in on 18 to when I made that putt

and when the celebrations all happened, those are the things that I’ll remember forever,” Henderson said. “To hit it to 3 feet like that and to know that I finally did it, to hear the crowd chant my name, sing ‘O Canada,’ to make that putt was awesome.” Henderson earned $337,500 for her second victory of the season and seventh of her LPGA Tour career, one short of Sandra Post’s record for
Canadians. Henderson finished at 21-under 267. Angel Yin was second after a 68. Jennifer Song (67) was six back at 15 under. Minjee Lee (68), Amy Yang (68), Su Oh and Austin Ernst tied for fourth at 14 under. Hataoka had a 72 to finish at 14 under with three-time champion Lydia Ko (69), topranked defending champion Sung Hyun Park (71), Anna Nordqvist (68) and Maria Torres (68).

Jakarta, Indonesia (AP) — China’s Su Bingtian gave world junior champion Lalu Muhammad Zohri a taste of what it’s like to race against men. The fastest man in Asia was the hot favorite for the Asian Games gold medal in the 100 meters, but the crowd in Jakarta was there to support their 18-year-old local hope from the nearby earthquakeravaged island of Lombok. Su took command early and controlled the race with 40 meters to go, finishing in a games record 9.92 seconds — one-hundredth outside his continental mark. “I don’t mind about the time, it was about getting the win,” Su said. “I knew if I got
a good start, no one (here) can beat me.” He didn’t get a great start, but had the experience to keep his cool. “I felt a lot of more pressure here,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll feel that much at the world championships.” Tosin Ogunode, younger brother of 2014 champion Femi Ogunode, got silver for Qatar in a photo finish from Japan’s Olympic relay silver medalist Ryota Yamagata after they both finished in 10.00. Zohri, who won the 100 at the world juniors in Finland in July to become an instant star in Indonesia ahead of the games, was slow out of the blocks and never made it up before placing seventh.
New Zealand thrash Australia 40-12 to retain Bledisloe Cup Auckland, New Zealand (AP) — Flyhalf Beauden Barrett scored four tries and contributed 30 points as New Zealand thrashed Australia 40-12 in a Bledisloe Cup rugby test last Saturday to retain the trophy for the 16th straight year. Considered under pressure to keep the No. 10 jersey before the series began, Barrett produced a masterly performance to guide the All Blacks to a 2-0 lead in the three-match Bledisloe Cup series. He was also instrumental in New Zealand’s 38-13 win in the first test in Sydney the previous weekend. Barrett scored twice in the first half, crucially in the 37th minute as New Zealand gained a 14-7 lead at the end of a tight opening spell. He completed his hat trick in the 62nd to quell a brief Wallabies comeback, and then was denied a fourth try in the 65th when the television match official contentiously ruled there had been a knock-on in the lead-up.

Barrett needed only three minutes to remedy the error. He scored his fourth try in the 68th, taking his tally with five conversions to 30 points — a record for a New Zealand player in a test against Australia. The match in many ways mirrored the first test. New Zealand scored a crucial try at the end of a tight first half, then scored again immediately after the break to launch a torrent of scoring in the second spell. It was New Zealand’s 30th win in their last 34 tests against Australia, ensuring they remained unbeaten against the Wallabies at Eden Park since 1986, and extended their winning streak in all tests at the Auckland stadium to 42 matches since 1991. “We respect the Bledisloe Cup and we respect what the Wallabies bring every week when we play them,” All Blacks captain Kieran Read said. “It doesn’t come easy for us, we’ve got to work really hard. We show our respect

in the work we put in and we’re really happy to have that cup again.” In Saturday’s other Rugby Championship match in Mendoza, Argentina beat South Africa in coach Mario Ledesma’s first home test in charge as the Pumas produced a rampaging firsthalf performance in a 32-19 victory. Ledesma’s team scored three of its four tries in eight minutes in the opening half, wresting control with a double by right wing Bautista Delguy and a try from flyhalf Nicolas Sanchez. After conceding an early try, Argentina led the Springboks by a commanding 25
points at one stage in a scintillating response of 29 unanswered points in just over 30 minutes. Sanchez collected 17 points to lead Argentina to their third win over South Africa, all coming in the last three years. It was also Argentina’s biggest margin of victory over the Springboks, surpassing by a point the 37-25 win in South Africa in 2015. And it was a first triumph this year for the Pumas, who lost three straight home games in June, a run that saw the end of former coach Daniel Hourcade and gave the former Argentina international Ledesma his chance.
Thailand digs in to keep ‘takraw’ at Asian Games

From page 36 “This is one of the sports that really shows the athleticism and it is really exciting to watch,” Sakha Siriwat, gold-medal winner in the team regu, said. “It is very thrilling and also it’s a sport with such a long heritage, so it should not be dropped. “It’s a very exciting sport to watch.” Thailand coach Kamol Tankimhong sounded confident sepaktakraw would be retained for the continental Olympic-style games, which attract more than 11,000 athletes in 40 sports. “We have great confidence in the international federation, and the Asian federation — they are working hard so that we raise the awareness of the sport,” Tankimhong said. The atmosphere was certainly electric as Thailand beat arch rivals Malaysia in
the opening men’s team regu, a rivalry that has lasted decades. Malaysia swept all the gold medals in 1990 and 1994 but Thailand has dominated the event ever since. After the Thai men won the team regu here, Thailand’s women beat South Korea for gold in the team event. Vietnam and Myanmar took bronze. Thailand also won the men’s team doubles over Laos, while Indonesia and Japan picked up bronze medals. Siriwat, who has won gold medals at three Asian Games, is hopeful the performances in Palembang help the sport keep its place on the program. “It will be a sad occasion if it is not in the Asian Games anymore,” he said. “I would feel sad for the younger generation. I won’t be able to show the world how Takraw is played or how it is supposed to be played.”

Italian GP this weekend
Mercedes-Benz built winners before Lewis Hamilton Pre-war Grand Prix racing was the playground of Mercedes and Auto-Union and whatever was left was picked up by Alfa Romeo. 1936 had belonged to Auto Union and especially their brilliant young driver Bernd Rosemeyer. The Mercedes W25 was showing its age and Mercedes decided to temporarily withdraw from competition to reorganize their racing department. Rudolf Uhlenhaut was appointed Technical Director of the Rennabteilung, or racing department that would work between the Design Office and the Team Manager, Alfred Neubauer. Uhlenhaut was 30 years old at the time and decided that the only way for him to fully understand the problems with the Grand Prix Cars was to drive them himself. Soon he was lapping the Nurburgring at times just below the drivers. Grand Prix racing was different in those days as the cars were tested and re-tested constantly prior to the race meeting. Once the cars arrived at the race meeting they were rarely changed and the weekend was used to familiarize the drivers with the track and local conditions. Uhlenhaut would be in charge of all racing development until they came to the track where Neubauer would handle race strategy. The most successful partnership in the history of motor racing had begun. While testing the W25 Uhlenhaut found the chassis too weak and the springs to stiff! There was very little movement of the axle against the frame. On one occasion he lost a rear wheel on the straight at top speed. The car continued on as if nothing happened! He would later remark that “it was like driving a motorcycle with a sidecar!” The new car for the 1937 season would be based on the lessons learned during this test period. Intense testing of the car took place at Monza due to bad weather back in Germany. The car was driven for nearly 1,500 miles without any serious problems.
Mercedes W 125.
The W125 is considered a development of the W25 and so it should but the changes that Uhlenhaut made had a profound effect. The suspension was completely redesigned with the idea of providing softer front suspension than at the rear while keeping the driving wheels upright and at right angles to the road. The supercharger was modified to suck air through the carburetor rather than push the air in. The old system was called the Druckvergasermotor or pressure-carburetor engine while the new system was called the Saugvergasermotor or suction-carburetor engine. Capacity was also increased to 5.66 liters. From there the car won its first race with Lang driving. For the Avusrennen a mix of cars were entered and Lang again won but the season went to Caracciola and with it another European Championship. Today’s racers probably do not know that Herr Neubauer ‘invented’ pit signals as in one race in the rain, Caracciola was way in front and Neubauer wanted him to slow down, Caracciola on the other hand thought he was behind the others so pressed on regardless. And pit signal boards were used thereafter. Of course, with electronic monitoring today the pit was can tell if their driver has passed wind. I’m not sure that Alfred N would approve taking his pit boards to that extreme. However, I just hope that Mr. Hamilton understands the heritage involved in the Mercedes-Benz racing department.
What did we learn from the GP at Spa? The Belgian 2018 GP was, after the first lap, a bore. Here we are with 20 of the claimed world’s best drivers and 25 percent of them crash on the first lap. At the first corner of the first lap. You never win the race at the first corner – you only lose the race at the first corner. As the gaggle approached the first corner, Hulkenberg
(Renault) totally misjudged his braking, slamming into Alonso (McLaren) who then flew over Leclerc (Sauber), running into Ricciardo (Red Bull) who then ran into Raikkonen (Ferrari). Again I say, these are the world’s best drivers? For the 15 drivers left, Vettel (Ferrari) won as he liked, leaving Hamilton (Mercedes) in his wake. Third went to the

wonder cloggie Verstappen (Red Bull). The rest were part of a high speed procession where even the last man running (Vandoorne McLaren) said, “I think the race in general was quite boring for everyone, there wasn’t much overtaking and for us there were no miracles today.” Mr. Vandoorne, I have never met you, but at least you are honest. The next GP is at Monza September 2. Let us hope for something a little less soporific.
The GP circus moves to Italy, the home of Ferrari and the Tifosi. Let us hope that Monza will give us some real racing as well, and hopefully the rest of the fields will be nearer to the Mercedes duo. And with a bit of luck Vettel (formerly known as The Finger) will have got over his paddy. Monza is another driver’s circuit; however, like many other circuits, Monza has not been a single layout, but a series of more than a dozen layouts which have ranged in length from 2.4 km to 9 km. The circuit was opened in the Monza Royal Park, near Milan, in 1922 and featured bankings, though these were demolished in 1939. The bankings which featured in some races, 1955-69, were new structures built on the format of the original. Bankings were used for the Italian GP in 1955, ‘56, ‘60 and ‘61, and were last used for racing of any form in 1969 when the concrete became in need of substantial resurfacing and rebuilding. The 1971 Italian GP holds the record for the fastest-ever Formula One race but, emphatically, that is not the same as saying the fastest race for Grand Prix cars. That honor remains in the possession of the 1937 Avusrennen with Rosemeyer in the Auto Union recording a 276 km/h lap (that’s about 165 mph). After 1971, the circuit underwent some
Monza!
revisions to discourage slipstreaming and to lower the average lap speed. Chicanes were added in 1976 and, in 1994, the second Lesmo Bend was tightened and the Curve Grande was re-profiled. The World Championship which Vettel has his eye on, is not a 100 percent surety and is still quite open, with eight more GPs after this one. We can expect that the main protagonists will still be trying very hard, in particular Alonso, racing in front of the passionate Ferrari fans. We will be watching from our perches at Jameson’s Irish Pub (Soi AR, next to Nova Park) and the racing commences at 8.10 p.m., but join us around 7 p.m. for dinner and drinks (I do recommend the Sunday roast specials), and a chat before the race begins at 8.10 p.m. We watch on the giant screen, through an HD channel.
Brabham BT 62 We went from Cars to Supercars, to Hypercars to Ultra cars and now Damn Well Totally Manic cars with the news of the resurrection of the Brabham name in the Brabham BT 62. The Brabham BT62 is a mid-engined track day car produced by Anglo-Australian car manufacturer Brabham Automotive. It was introduced this year with deliveries expected to start at the end of 2018. A planned production of only 70 cars is intended (in honor of the company’s 70 year heritage in racing in PR-Speak). When Jack Brabham was the world champion, the cars had the prefix BT which stood for Brabham and his partner Ron Tauranac, so they are doing the same with this ridiculous car, even though Sir Jack is long gone to the racetrack in the sky, and Ron is 93. The BT62 is powered by a mid-mounted 5.4-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine that is based on a Ford V8 I believe. The engine has been extensively modified and produces 515 kW (691 hp; 700 PS) at 7,400 rpm and 492 lb ft (667 Nm) of torque at 6,200 rpm, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 653 hp per ton. Power goes to the rear wheels through a six-speed Australian designed Holinger sequentialshift racing transmission controlled by steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, and stopping is handled by carbon-to-carbon brakes,
with carbon pads actuated by six pistons acting on carbon rotors. The chassis of the BT62 uses what Brabham calls a ‘tubular metallic architecture’ and the body features lightweight carbon fibre body panels, as well as carbonkevlar wheel housings, to give the car a dry weight of 2,142 lbs (972 kg). The car has a full fixed aero package as an option that includes a front splitter, rear diffuser and large rear wing, that are all made from carbon fiber and together are capable of producing 2,645 lbs (1,200 kg) of downforce. The suspension uses a double wishbone setup in the front and rear and features pushrod actuated four-way adjustable Öhlins dampers and adjustable antiroll bars. The wheels are 18 inch center locking units and use Michelin racing slicks. The interior is relatively sparse as the BT62 is built for track day driving and features FIA-spec carbon fiber seat shells, a six-point harness, Alcantara trim, leather door pulls, an adjustable pedal box, a carbon fiber dashboard, a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, a removable carbon fiber steering wheel and a fire extinguisher. (More PR speak) - Brabham intends to produce 70 cars to celebrate the 70 years since the company founder Sir Jack Brabham launched his racing career in Australia in 1948. The first 35 cars will be finished in the corresponding liveries of Brabham’s 35
Grand Prix winning cars, while the rest will be finished to the owner’s specifications. The BT62 has a retail price of around US$1.4 million (around GB£1 million at current exchange rates). The price includes admission into the Brabham driver development program, which offers personalized driver coaching sessions to help the owners make the most of their cars on the track. Road Legal Conversions Although the BT62 in standard form is not road legal, Brabham says that they will offer a service to convert the car to be road legal. They say the work will be carried out in the U.K., and that’s also where the car will be registered after going through an IVA (Independent Vehicle Assessment). International buyers will supposedly still be able to carry out the procedure and be able to drive the car in other countries by having the car shipped back to the U.K. once every 12 months to Brabham for an annual service in order to comply with registration laws. Brabham says they will pay for shipping costs back and forth for the first two years you own your BT62. So there you are, a useless piece of pseudo history which will extract USD 1.4 million from your bank account. But don’t worry if you haven’t got it all in loose change – you can buy it on the drip at a mere 16,000 GBP per month. With that easy finance, I think I’ll have two of them.

meters long swimming pool. Thai Garden Resort’s General Manager Rene Pisters personally took care of the “guests” and managed to make them smile and laugh the entire day. As per Mr. Pisters: “I find it essential that the family members of our team are aware where their husband or wife, father or mother spends their days of working, be it cooking, making rooms, or serving
guests at the Thai Garden Resort. The family members must have the opportunity to see and experience where the parents work and in what environment they make their living. We regard ourselves as one big family and our team members are the ones who contribute to the success of the hotel and the satisfaction of our clients.” Since fun and games makes one hungry, a sumptuous
lunch buffet was prepared with all the goodies children like the most. This family day showcases the creative teamwork of the management and the employees and it shows that, without this kind of spirit, no hotel would be able to operate properly. Many children already asked what date they have to reserve for next year’s family day!

Guido brings Riccardo and Renzo to dinner at the Royal Cliff
Guido Vannucchi, Marchesi Antinori Export Manager Asia Pacific waxing eloquent.
Jan Lorensen Resident Manager of the Royal Cliff Grand Hotel, welcomes guests and deVine Wine Club Members to Italian affair.
Mrs. Panga Vathanakul (3rd right) MD of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group together with GM Prem Calais (left) and RM Jan Lorensen (2nd left) thank Guido Vannucchi (2nd right) and Thomas Ruegsegger (right) of Italasia for the excellent wines and expressed the highest compliments to Executive Chef Peter Held (3rd left) for his magnificent creations.
Dr Iain Corness The Royal Cliff’s deVine wine club introduced its members to the Antinori label, followed by Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella at the Italian Wine Dinner held in the Royal Grill Room and Wine Cellar. To lead the members through the evening was Guido Vannucchi a passionate Italian from Milan representing Antinori. The “Italian affair” began with an Antinori bubbly in their Cuvee Royale Franciacorta DOCG NV as the reception wine. This was a very pleasant invitation to the following wines in the dinner, which came from Umbria and Lazio. Antinori wines are well known in Italy and these days well known in the world wine circles. Marchesi Antinori Srl can trace its history back to 1385. They are one of the biggest wine companies in Italy, and their innovations played a large part in the “Super-Tuscan” revolution of the 1970s. Antinori is a member of the Primum Familiae Vini and the 10th oldest family owned company in the world. The first course was a tuna carpaccio with Mesclun leaves, apple drops and

duck, and was very enjoyable with the light red and hats off to Executive Chef Peter Held. After a tamarind sorbet, the members continued with a very different course – a grilled Italian Spicy sausage on a truffle mash and red cabbage coulis. The wine with this was a Falesco Tellus Shiraz Lazio IGP 2015. This shiraz was able to overcome the spiciness, and was

The Falesco Vitiano Grechetto Umbtia IGT was a very refreshing white wine teamed with an easy on the palate first course. particularly smooth, and my pick of the wine of the night. The deVine wine club produced another winner in the next course which was a very tender braised lamb shoulder on a saffron risotto with the Falesco Montiano Merlot Lazio IGP 2013. As indicated by Guido Vannucchi, this was a very smooth wine and being just a little bit older assisted in the smoothness. The dinner closed with the classic Italian Tiramisu. The wine to go with it was on the sweet side, being a Muffato Della Sala Umbria IGT 12.5 percent. An interesting Italian 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 percent Grechetto, Traminer and Riesling. Very similar to a German Gewurtztraminer. Coffee and Biscotti and it was time to wrap up another deVine successful evening.

Orange Teriyaki Pork Teriyaki sauce gives its own particular flavor to any dish, so this recipe is good when using pork medallions. This dish then depends for the bulk of its flavor on the marinade. This procedure is best done in a plastic “zip-lock” bag, into which you place the pork and the marinade. Turn it over several times to let the marinade get on all sides and then place in the refrigerator for at least one hour, but three or four is better. It is very simple to cook after the marinade process.
Ingredients Marinade Orange juice Teriyaki sauce Soy sauce Ground ginger Tabasco sauce Honey Garlic crushed The rest Pork medallions Onion thinly sliced Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Cooking Method Combine the marinade ingredients in a small bowl. Place pork in a Ziploc bag and pour marinade over pork. Marinate for at least one hour in the refrigerator. Remove from the marinade and place pork on heavy duty aluminium foil. Season with salt and pepper. Arrange onion slices over pork. Seal edges of aluminium foil and place on grille at medium heat. Grill for 20 minutes turning once or twice.

Nina takes the helm – disabled sailor sets course for Japan regatta Kev Scott Nina is a lovely local lady from Pattaya who suffered a serious car accident when she was just 25 years old and is now a quadriplegic. Having been able-bodied for a long time it must have been so much harder to adapt to a life confined to a wheelchair, however, despite her mobility restrictions Nina leads a very full life and spends a lot of time working to help other people with disabilities. Luckily there are quite a lot of “good” people around and it is with their help and commitment that Nina and others are given the chance to not only go sailing but also take an active part in sailing a yacht. At Ocean Marina Yacht Club, just South of Pattaya, with the support of the marina management, there are many sailors who put their time and energy into helping others go sailing. Whether it be giving orphanage kids the opportunity of a fun day out on the ocean or teaching people with physical disabilities how to sail in specially adapted boats. The benefits work both ways. Those given the opportunity to go sailing enjoy the freedom of the sea, away from their wheelchairs and the pollution and noise of the land, and the organisers enjoy the feelings that only “giving” can bring. To see the joy on the faces of all those they take to sea is an unforgettable experience.
So it was arranged for Nina to go sailing on a 25-foot racing yacht for the first time in her life and also to experience being an active part of the crew. The yacht has been fitted with a specially adapted motor driven rudder control which is operated by pressing switches with the little movement Nina has in her left hand. This would be her first step to sailing courses which we hope will
Controls have been developed to cope with almost any form of disability. In the extreme, these adaptations have resulted in a ventilated, quadriplegic lady being able to sail a small yacht single handed. As well as the mechanical controls needed, her dingy had to be fitted with the oxygen supply she needs 24 hours a day. It is beyond our understanding what the feeling this lady

had as she sailed, free as a bird, away from the restrictions she normally had to endure every waking moment of her life. Hearing her talk of her joy afterwards was enough to affect anyone. The steering system developed for Nina was used the previous day by K. Narong from the Father Ray foundation and worked very well for him. Sitting in a “rally car” style seat bolted to the deck, he was easily able to steer

the boat. We also had “Meeow” (a paraplegic lady) on board and she had a turn at steering, using the tiller by hand in the conventional way, and did very well considering it was her first by time to do so. K. Phong was also on board and in spite of only having one leg he was in control of the jib sheets and was able to move from one side of the boat to the other with ease. Nina’s trial the next day did not go so smoothly because the weather was not so kind to us. It had been beautiful conditions the previous two days but for Nina the wind was much stronger and there were waves to contend with. It is very hard to sail smoothly
expressed the sensation of being in control and this was a joy to behold. That’s why the folks at Freedom Sailing do this work. A big thanks goes to Ocean Marina Yacht Club for sponsoring our efforts and to Doug Smith who has worked tirelessly, on and off the water, since the beginning of Freedom Sailing. Also to Tom Mc Neill of Austhai Electronic Solutions for designing and supplying the control units. Note: If you would like to learn more about Freedom Sailing and how you can help, check out: www. Thailand digs in to keep ‘takraw’ at Asian Games Raj Mohan Viswanathan

under these conditions because the wind tries to steer the boat itself. However we did manage to have an hour on the water, but because of the very limited use of her left hand, the control unit only responded in one direction. The good news is that because of this trial we now have a second generation steering unit already on the drawing board and this will easily give Nina full control. The trial was a success in that it provided important information for us to solve some issues. It will not be long before we are back on the water again. If we needed any encouragement to continue this project that was provided by the brief moment when Nina
Palembang, Indonesia (AP) — Of the Asian games at the Asian Games, sepak takraw should get some billing as a festival event. With origins in rural southeast Asian provinces — several countries lay claim to creating it — sepak takraw is like hands-free volleyball where players can use their feet, knees, heads, elbows or shoulders to propel a woven, synthetic ball. The name of the game is a literal translation. Proponents explain that it’s a combination of languages with “sepak” coming from the term used for kick in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and “takraw” being the Thai word for the woven ball.
While the acrobatic, overhead kicks and athletic, somersaulting leaps to the height of the net are eyecatching, the sport’s place on the Asian Games program is far from secure. At the 2018 Games being cohosted in Jakarta and Palembang, only eleven countries entered the team regu — or team of teams — competition.
With the next Asian Games travelling to China, there has been speculation sepaktakraw will be cut from the program. Understandably, that notion has not been well received in Thailand, winners of the first three gold medals in this year’s tournament. Continued on page 29.
