Pattaya councilmen check Jomtien Beach sewers cleaned flood-hit neighborhoods Jetsada Homklin

Pattaya City Council members visited the Baan Nernrodfai community to follow on efforts to relieve chronic flooding. Councilmen Sinchai Wattanasartsathorn and Choluek Chotekamjorn met with neighborhood President Manoon Wongsena Oct. 17. They gathered feedback on the flooding issues and brainstormed ideas on how it can be resolved. The councilmen also were given a tour of the community’s efforts to manage garbage through composting and recycling milk boxes into roof tiles. The area is also a Pattaya Low Carbon Learning Center where organic fertilizer is made and used to grow organic vegetables.

Brit, Canadian face 10 years in jail for spraying ancient wall Bangkok (AP) - A Briton and Canadian face up to 10 years in prison on charges of spraying paint on an ancient wall in northern Thailand, police said. Security camera footage purportedly showed Furlong Lee and Canadian Brittney Lorretta Katherine Schneider, both 23, spraying a message on the walls of the Tha Pae

Gate in the northern province of Chiang Mai at around 4 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18. Pol Col. Teerasak Sriprasert, chief of the Chiang Mai police, said that the tourists are in custody and have been charged with vandalizing registered ancient artifacts, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a million baht ($30,650) fine.

Teerasak said the pair admitted sprayed the message out of drunken revelry. He said that Lee, who is from Liverpool, admitted that he wrote “Scouser Lee” on the wall while Brittney told police that she wrote the letter “B’’ underneath it. The 13th century Tha Pae Gate is part of an ancient wall that forms a square around Chiang Mai’s inner city.

Sanitation workers spent four days cleaning out Pattaya’s storm drains and sewers to relive flooding problems. Work crews spread out across the city Oct. 16-19, clearing clogged sewers on the railway-parallel road close to the Nernrodfai Community, Soi Nong Yai in front of Nong Yai Temple, and Sukhumvit sois 8, 45 and 53, in Charoensuk Village and on Pratamnak Soi 6.

Lastly, they fixed clarifiers and damaged sewer lids in Soi Wat Boonkanjanaram near Jomtien Second Road, on the railway road close to Nernrodfai, in Rungland Village, on Sukhumvit Soi 60 and at the intersection of Second Road and Soi Diana. Other drainage trough lids and mesh were repaired on Soi 13/1 and 13/ 2 at Second Road and Sawangfah Road in front

Committee attended by representatives of the Provincial Electricity Authority, CAT Telecom and the Telecommunications Association of Thailand. CAT was assigned by the PEA to handle the relocation of communication cables underground nationwide as well as setting rental rates for the water-protected pipes in which they go. The utility set a charge of 120 baht a month for homes connected to underground wires and 6,000 baht a month for businesses, which has businesses up in arms. Business owners – particularly cable-TV operators – called the fees excessive and added that they’d prefer not to put wires underground, as

they are more difficult and costly to repair or replace. The dispute is threatening a delay in completing the PEA’s North Road project, which was supposed to conclude by year-end. Srivisut reminded the business owners that the public’s interest comes first and that the point of the wire-burying was in response to public complaints about jumbles of wires that often catch fire. It also beautifies the city. The admiral added that he wanted to see the dispute settled quickly and amicably, putting the public’s interest first. CAT said it would meet again with business operators at its Pattaya office on Nov. 8.

Pattaya moves to protect rebuilt beach from storm damage Jetsada Homklin Having demolished 12 sections of sidewalk along Pattaya Beach to relieve Beach Road flooding, Pattaya officials are now looking to mitigate the damage to the sand-restoration project those openings have caused. Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome chaired an Oct. 16 meeting with the Marine Department and city officials

to add new sand, which then gets cut out and carried into the sea by the storm runoff. Sonthaya acknowledged that the beach rebuild needs to be protected and said, long-term, Pattaya needs to work with surrounding subdistricts to slow the amount of water reaching the beach. Some solutions suggested

to examine how to avoid undercutting the work being done to expand the beach and add new sand. Throughout rainy season, torrents of water have poured down Beach Road sidestreets and onto the sand. To drain Beach Road faster, the city opened 12 spots on the footpath to let water drain onto the beach. Pattaya sanitation workers spread out across the city to clean up spots plagued by illegal garbage dumping with Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome promising increased patrols and fines. As Pattaya struggles with collecting and disposing of all its trash, illegal dump sites have popped up more frequently. Fines for dumping are only 2,000 baht, an amount which hasn’t scared many people into stopping. But Sonthaya said more surveillance of problem areas will be done and more fines levied.

In the interim, sanitation workers cleared trash from Sukhumvit sois 2-4, Yinyom Beach, Jomtien Beach, near the Pattaya Vegetarian Festival in Naklua, Nernrodfai Community, Pattaya Beach, Lan Po Public Park and Soi, Saktong. Crews also emptied trash bins on Jomtien Beach and cleaned the pavement surrounding them before sweeping up fallen branches in front of Rungroj Park. A famous Sattahip shrine where gamblers pray for lucky lottery numbers has been vandalized, likely by underground lottery brokers who lost money on numbers posted there. The so-called “Gamo Shrine” on Sukhumvit Road, 500 meters from U-Tapao-RayongPattaya Airport, has survived for about 10 years, despite attempts by lottery brokers to burn or destroy it. But this month the “lucky” shrine finally met its end. Pieces of the shrine and the dolls and items that adorned it were scattered on the ground Oct. 14. The shrine’s demise may be linked to the Sept. 1 lottery draw. It had been papered over with “gamo” banknotes

World Stamp Exhibition comes to Thailand Chai Malick From November 28th through December 3rd, Bangkok will host the 2018 Thailand World Stamp Exhibition on the 5th floor of the upscale Paragon Shopping Mall. The exhibition will be held under the Patronage of FIP and the Auspices of FIAP. His Excellency Pichet Durongkaverote, Minister of the Digital Economy will preside over the Opening Ceremony. Major Asian FIP\FIAP stamp exhibitions rotate from one Asian country to another and it is a real event when international postal administrations and collectors from throughout Asia come to Thailand. Over 2,600 frames of exhibits will be on view showing off some of the best collections in the world. Total worth of these little pieces of paper? Over 4000 million baht equal to 100 million Euros. Because this is a world FIP event participants and exhibitors are from around the globe, not just Asian countries. On the show’s website the Competitive Exhibit Listing enumerates material from Argentina, the U.K., Belgium, China (both of them) and many more. In all over 70 countries are listed as having showpieces for the event. Thailand has the added benefit of basking in the patronage of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who is not only dear to the hearts of Thai citizens but is also a philatelist herself. The Princess has not only by added to the Royal collection but has also designed stamps for the Thailand Post. Certainly, one of the high points will be HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s visit on the afternoon of December 3rd.

If you are interested in seeing a high-powered auction after a relaxed viewing of the world class exhibitions, on November 30th through December 2nd Eurseree Collectibles will be conducting “The Biggest Gathering of Asian Rarities Ever to be Auctioned in Bangkok.” As the Eurseree Collectibles website states, the auction will be “Featuring lots of rare Siamese Stamps, revenues, postal history, covers, proofs, errors, airmail, important Asian Philatelic materials, world-wide collections, etc.” That much high-quality philatelic material is certain to attract bidders from throughout Asia and the competition for the best stamps will be intense with prices realized likely to be considerably in excess of catalog values. Even after I have been left far behind in the bidding for a desirable and significant stamp, I enjoy watching the “deep pocket” bidders counter their rivals with increasingly higher bids to become the one and only owner. The driving force to bring the exhibition to Thailand is the Philatelic Association of Thailand, a member of FIP\FIAP. A complete lineup of events and workshops is available at www.thailand2018.net. See you there!

New Retirement Visa Regulations Dear Editor; With reference to Mr. Barry Kenyon’s letter published in your 19th/25th Pattaya Mail Edition I should like to comment as under but with respect only to those UK Farangs relying on the British Embassy Pension Confirmation Letter for their annual Retirement Visa (R.V.) Those UK Farangs having B800,000 in a Thai Bank Account, the new Regulations seem not to apply at this time. a) The monthly Pension/Income requirement of B65,000 to be paid into a Thai Bank Account equates to an Annual Income on B780,000. Note how close this is to the B800,000 already deposited into a Thai Account on an annual basis or at least three months prior to the R.V. application. b) Based on current tourist exchange rates B65,000 (at B42.30 to the Pound) = 1,537 Pound c. This is being required every month to be deposited into the Farang’s Thai Account. With the volatility of the Baht/Pound exchange rate this could go up considerably depending upon the current UK Govt’s Brexit dealings. c) My concern currently is with a UK Farang out of Thailand, albeit having an Annual R.V. and not returning until after 12th December 2018, the cut-off date for the British Embassy to cease issuing the Pension Confirmation Letters. What policy/procedures will the Thai Immigration Authorities insist upon in order to issue this Farang with his new R.V? He may not have the time to introduce this monthly stipend into his Account and mayhap only for the first month? Will Immigration Write to the Editor:

E-mail: mailbag@pattayamail.com

Authorities accept this, as at the moment one can only apply for the replacement R.V. one month prior to the termination of the current R.V.? d) With the introduction of the monthly transfer of B65,000 by the Farang, is it possible, as I believe it should be, that the Farang can use any or all of it for personal expenses during that month? For Farangs operating under the B800,000 regulation, this can be used up to three months prior to the issue/request of the new R.V. when the balance must be returned to B800,000 three months prior to request of the new R.V. What is the position regarding the monthly income requirement? No statement has been made on this point as to my knowledge. e) Many of my friends have concerns as to how they will show their Thai Bank Account is indeed in receipt of B65,000 per month for the R.V. protocol. My simple answer to that, unless proven wrong, is that upon request of the new R.V. they should have to take their Thai Account Pass Book to Immigration, photocopies of the relevant pages showing the monthly income accompanying the R.V. Form. However, will Immigration accept a one or two month deposit due to the early request of a new R.V.? There would appear to be a number of concerns/questions, remaining to be answered and I would hope either the Thai Government / Immigration Authorities attend to these concerns with their utmost diligence. A lot of UK Farangs remain in limbo until all these are resolved. Rodney M. Girvan

NASA official: Tense moments but calm crew in aborted launch Vladimir Isachenkov Moscow (AP) - NASA’s chief heard one reassuring sound over the radio link after the aborted launch of a Soyuz capsule with an American and a Russian aboard. It was U.S. astronaut Nick Hague calmly relaying information in Russian to flight controllers. “My reaction was, ‘things aren’t going well and he’s not speaking English,’” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine told reporters Friday, after Hague and Roscosmos’Alexei Ovchinin returned to the Star City training center outside Moscow from their abruptly shortened mission. “So, in other words, he was calm, he was cool, he was collected, he was doing what he was trained to do,” said Bridenstine, who was at the Baikonur Cosmodrome to watch the launch. Two minutes after Hague and Ovchinin blasted off Thursday for the International Space Station, their rocket failed, triggering an emergency landing. Their capsule fell from an altitude of about 50 kilometers (31 miles) at a sharper-than-normal angle, building up gravitational forces at 6-7 times those on Earth. It was the first such accident for Russia’s manned program in over three decades, although there also have been launch failures in recent years involving unmanned vehicles. An investigation is

underway, and Bridenstine said he doesn’t expect the next mission taking a crew to the space station in December to be delayed. He recalled the tense moment when he heard Hague reporting the G-forces in Russian to Mission Control, followed by a break in communications and the loss of flight data. “There was the time when I heard 6.7G, and that was the first time I realized that’s not right,” he said. “And then of course data was lost, communications were lost for a period of time, and then everybody went to their respective corners attempting to find out what the truth is. And when we learned that the crew was safe and descending it was a moment to behold. A lot of people very, very happy.” Hague’s calm voice showed he was well-trained for the emergency, although there was still a nervous atmosphere at Baikonur, Bridenstine said. “That’s the scary moment, you know, when you know that the Gs are not where they should be and then communications stops and I’m sure that they are going through their procedures and doing their thing and the question is what’s the ultimate G-load ... and how does that affect the crew,” he said. “And during that time we weren’t getting a lot of feedback, but again that’s appropriate because they were busy and we were OK with that.”

In this photo provided by Russian Defense Ministry Press Service, the Soyuz MS-10 space capsule lays in a field after an emergency landing near Dzhezkazgan, about 450 kilometers (280 miles) northeast of Baikonur, Kazakhstan, Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018. (Russian Defense Ministry Press Service photo via AP)

About 34 minutes elapsed from the time the rocket failed to when the capsule finally parachuted to a landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan, where rescue crews swiftly picked up the pair. Bridenstine praised the Soyuz emergency rescue system, saying it functioned like a “miracle.” “Even when a failure occurs, because of the engineering and the design and the great work done by folks in Russia, the crew can be safe,” he said. “That’s an amazing capability and we can’t understate how important it is. Not every mission that fails ends up so successfully.” Hague also expressed his gratitude. “Thank you all for your support & heartfelt prayers,” he

tweeted from Star City. “Operational teams were outstanding in ensuring our safety & returning us to family & friends.” Sergei Krikalyov, the head of Roscosmos’ manned programs, said the launch went awry after one of the rocket’s four boosters failed to jettison about two minutes into the flight, damaging the main stage and triggering the emergency. Experts are now trying to determine what specific glitch prevented the booster’s separation. “We will need to look and analyze the specific cause whether it was a cable, a pyro or a nut,” Krikalyov said, adding that Roscosmos hopes to be able to sort out the problem and carry out the next Soyuz launch in December.

Roscosmos promised to share all relevant information with NASA, which pays up to $82 million per Soyuz seat to the space station. “I have no anticipation right now that the launch in December for the next crew will be delayed,” Bridenstine said. “The investigation is ongoing, Russia has been very supportive of sharing data with the United States and we’re grateful for that. And at this point I’m confident that we’ll launch in December.” The current space station crew of an American, a Russian and a German was scheduled to return to Earth in December after a sixmonth mission. A Soyuz capsule attached to the station that they use to ride back to Earth is designed for 200 days in space, meaning that their stay in orbit could only be extended briefly. “We don’t have an opportunity to extend it for a long time,” Krikalyov said. In August, the space station crew found a hole had been drilled in the Soyuz capsule that caused a brief loss of air pressure before being patched. Krikalyov pledged that the Russian space agency will do its best not to leave the orbiting outpost unoccupied. “The station could fly in an unmanned mode, but will do all we can to avoid it,” he said. “The conservation of the station is possible, but it’s undesirable.” Russia currently operates

the only spacecraft for ferrying crews to the station following the retirement of the U.S. space shuttle fleet, but it stands to lose that monopoly in the coming years with the arrival of commercial U.S. crew capsules SpaceX’s Dragon and Boeing’s Starliner. “We’re getting really close already,” Bridenstine said. “We are anxiously anticipating early next year the test of two separate commercial crew vehicles that will fly to the International Space Station - SpaceX ad Boeing.” He said that the launch failure underlined the need for multiple launch systems to complement one another. “In other words, if there is a hiccup in one country’s system, there is another country’s system capable of maintaining the operation until the first country is ready to go again,” he said. “This demonstrates how important it is to have collaboration and to not be dependent on one system or another system.” But he also underlined the need for continuing U.S.Russian cooperation in space, voicing hope that it wouldn’t be affected by politics. “We can both do more in space together than we can ever do alone,” Bridenstine said. “When it comes to space and exploration and discovery and science, our two nations have always kept those activities separate from the disputes that we have terrestrially.”

How to check what Facebook hackers accessed in your account Mae Anderson New York (AP) - Could hackers have been able to see the last person you cyberstalked, or that party photo you were tagged in? According to Facebook, the unfortunate answer is “yes.” On Friday, the social network said fewer users were affected in a security breach it disclosed two weeks ago than originally estimated nearly 30 million, down from 50 million. In additional good news, the company said hackers weren’t able to access more sensitive information like your password or financial information. And third-party apps weren’t affected. Still, for users already uneasy about the privacy and security of their Facebook accounts after a year of tumult, the details that hackers did gain access to gender, relationship status, hometown and other info might be even more unsettling.

Facebook has been quick to let users check exactly what was accessed. But beyond learning what information the attackers accessed, there’s relatively little that users can do - beyond, that is, watching out for suspicious emails or texts. Facebook says the problem has been fixed. The company set up a website that its 2 billion global users can use to check if their accounts have been accessed, and if so, exactly what information was stolen. It will also provide guidance on how to spot and deal with suspicious emails or texts. Facebook will also send messages directly to those people affected by the hack. On that page, following some preliminary information about the investigation, the question “Is my Facebook account impacted by this security issue?” appears midway down. It will also provide information specific to your account if you’re

logged into Facebook. Facebook said the hackers accessed names, email addresses or phone numbers from these accounts. For 14 million of them, hackers got even more data - basically anything viewable on your account that any of your friends could see, and more. It’s a pretty extensive list: user name, gender, locale or language, relationship status,

religion, hometown, self-reported current city, birthdate, device types used to access Facebook, education, work, the last 10 places you checked into or were tagged in, your website, people or pages you follow and your 15 most recent searches. An additional 1 million accounts were affected, but hackers didn’t get any information from them.

The company isn’t giving a breakdown of where these users are, but says the breach was “fairly broad.” It plans to send messages to people whose accounts were hacked. Facebook said the FBI is investigating, but asked the company not to discuss who may be behind the attack. The company said it hasn’t ruled out the possibility of smaller-scale attacks that used the same vulnerability. The company said it has fixed the bugs and logged out affected users to reset those digital keys. Facebook Vice President Guy Rosen said in a Friday call with reporters that the company hasn’t ruled out the possibility that other parties might have launched other, smaller scale efforts to exploit the same vulnerability before it was disabled. Patrick Moorhead, founder of Moor Insights & Strategy, said the breach appeared similar to identity

theft breaches that have occurred at companies including Yahoo and Target in 2013. “Those personal details could be very easily be used for identity theft to sign up for credit cards, get a loan, get your banking password, etc.,” he said. “Facebook should provide all those customers free credit monitoring to make sure the damage is minimized.” Thomas Rid, a professor at the Johns Hopkins University, also said the evidence, particularly the size of the breach, seems to point to a criminal motive rather than a sophisticated state operation, which usually targets fewer people. “This doesn’t sound very targeted at all,” he said. “Usually when you’re looking at a sophisticated government operation, then a couple of thousand people hacked is a lot, but they usually know who they’re going after.”

5000 year old “cures” Is the use of herbal medicines something new? Most definitely not! Mankind has been using herbal medicines since Neanderthal times, and that is certainly not last month, though some of the people I see in Walking Street certainly have close Neanderthal relatives! Herbs used in medicine is nothing new. The Chinese had plant based pharmacopoeias almost 5000 years ago. The Sumerians, 4000 years ago, recorded 1000 medicinal plants on stone tablet prescriptions and even Hippocrates, one of the founders of modern medicine, listed 400 plantbased remedies in his Materia Medica. Many of our current pharmaceutical agents were originally discovered in plant form, even though they may now be formulated in a laboratory. These include Digoxin, Morphine, Codeine, Quinine, Theophylline and Pseudoephedrine. All of these are well documented drugs that do “work”, so there is no denying that some herbal medicines are very effective. Currently there are at least 122 distinct chemical substances, derived from plants, in use as pharmaceuticals today.

Herbal medicines are often used by people suffering from ailments for which conventional medicine offers no positive cure. HIV/AIDS is an obvious example. However, from the Western medical viewpoint, one of the problems with herbal medicines is the lack of well controlled statistical trials of some of these medications. Another problem for the western based prescriber is the lack of knowledge of the interactions between the “pharmaceutical” drugs and “herbal” medicines. In fact there is a huge gap in our knowledge of the toxicity levels and potential teratogenic effects with some herbal medicines as well. This is changing, and modern scientific scrutiny is being carried out on many common herbal remedies, but this is an early stage at present. Amongst these being studied is Guarana - extracted from the Paullinia cupana tree in South America. This is promoted as being a substance to give you a lift, some extra get up and go. Unfortunately it is difficult to identify the ingredient from the packaging of this compound. In actual fact, the main ingredient is caffeine. Guarana has 3-5 times more caffeine, weight for weight,

than coffee beans, so no wonder it can give you a lift. It can also give you palpitations and anxiety! This herbal medicine is potent. Another popular medication is Ginkgo, from the Ginkgo biloba tree. This is used for cerebral insufficiency as seen in the aged, leading to Dementia. Its effect is supposed to counteract this aging in the brain and the studies completed so far would appear to indicate that Ginkgo does have an effect on this condition. Now before you rush off to buy your bottle full of hope for the future please note that they have also found a nasty little side effect - brain hemorrhages! The warning in all this is to use a little caution when deciding on a course of herbal medicines and to inform your doctor if you are considering taking some if you are already under treatment with conventional pharmaceuticals. Drug interactions are common and can be potentially fatal. Herbal medications may be very effective, it is just important to understand there may be limitations or gaps in our knowledge. You have been warned! Now it’s time for a cup of Guarana.

Antibiotics for appendicitis? Surgery often not needed Lindsey Tanner Chicago (AP) - When emergency tests showed the telltale right-sided pain in Heather VanDusen’s abdomen was appendicitis, she figured she’d be quickly wheeled into surgery. But doctors offered her the option of antibiotics instead. A new study from Finland shows her choice is a reasonable alternative for most patients with appendicitis. Five years after treatment with antibiotics, almost twothirds of patients hadn’t had another attack. It’s a substantial change in thinking about how to treat an inflamed appendix. For decades, appendicitis has been considered a medical emergency requiring immediate surgery to remove the appendix because of fears it could burst, which can be life-threatening. But advances in imaging tests, mainly CT scans, have made it easier to determine if an appendix might burst, or if patients could be safely treated without surgery. The results suggest that nearly two-thirds of appendicitis patients don’t face that risk and may be good candidates for antibiotics instead.

In this 2016 photo provided by the University of Washington, Dr. Linda Vorvick examines Heather VanDusen at UW Neighborhood Clinic in Seattle. When emergency tests showed the telltale right-sided pain in VanDusen’s abdomen was appendicitis, she figured she’d be quickly wheeled into surgery. But doctors offered her the option of antibiotics instead. (Clare McLean/UW Medicine via AP)

“It’s a feasible, viable and a safe option,” said Dr. Paulina Salminen, the study’s lead author and a surgeon at Turku University Hospital in Finland. Her study in adults is the longest follow-up to date of patients treated with drugs instead of surgery for

appendicitis and the results confirm one-year findings reported three years ago. Research has also shown antibiotics may work for some children with appendicitis. The Finnish results were published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

A journal editorial says “it’s a new era of appendicitis treatment.” Appendix removal is the most common emergency surgery worldwide, with about 300,000 performed each year in the United States alone, said Salminen. She said the results from her study suggest many of those surgeries could be avoided. U.S. doctors have started offering antibiotics instead of surgery and Salminen says she occasionally does too. The journal editorial says appropriate patients should be given that option. The study involved about 500 Finnish adults who had CT scans to rule out severe cases. Half were treated with antibiotics; the others had surgery. Among the antibiotics patients, 100 ended up having surgery within five years of treatment - most for a suspected recurrence of appendicitis in the first year. Seven of them did not have appendicitis and likely could have avoided surgery. The results suggest the success rate for antibiotic treatment was almost 64 percent, the authors said. About 1 in 4 surgery patients had complications, including infections around the incision, abdominal pain

Genetic glitch increases men’s risk of impotence, study says Malcolm Ritter New York (AP) - Scientists say they’ve located the first well-documented genetic glitch that increases a man’s risk of impotence, a step that might someday lead to new treatments. Most impotence isn’t caused by genetics but rather things like obesity, diabetes, heart

disease, smoking, drug and alcohol use, stress or anxiety. But in a study released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers say they located a spot in human DNA where genetic variation might boost a man’s risk by about 25 percent. They found statistical evidence for that by looking in

the genetic makeup of about 36,600 men, and confirmed it in a similar study of 222,300 other men. Lab tests then suggested that variation might affect the activity of a nearby gene that’s known to be involved in sexual functioning. Now scientists want to explore how such variation affects risk of the condition, said Eric Jorgenson, a researcher

at Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland and lead author of the paper. It may interfere with the functioning of certain brain circuits, he said. He said discovering a biological explanation could give clues to developing new treatments for impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction.

and hernias, compared with only 7 percent of antibiotics patients. Antibiotic patients had 11 fewer sick days on average than the surgery group. In the first year, their treatment costs were about 60 percent lower. A cost analysis for the full five years wasn’t included in the published results. Surgery patients in the Finnish study all had conventional incisions rather than the less invasive “keyhole” surgeries that are more common for appendix removal in the United States. The non-surgery patients received three days of IV antibiotics in the hospital, followed by seven days of pills at home. Dr. Giana Davidson, a University of Washington surgeon, is involved in a similarly designed multicenter U.S. study that may answer

whether similar benefits would be seen for antibiotics versus “keyhole” surgery. Davidson called the Finnish study “a critical piece to the puzzle but I don’t think it answers all of the questions.” Heather VanDusen was treated at the University of Washington in 2016. She said she chose antibiotic treatment partly to avoid surgery scars, and now offers advice to patients for Davidson’s study. “I knew the worst case scenario was ending up back in the hospital so why not try antibiotics first,” said VanDusen, who works in university communications. She said she has done well since her treatment, but that the biggest drawback “is wondering, with every episode of stomach or bad gas, if it could happen again.”

Inflatable sea monster takes over a rusting warehouse Philadelphia (AP) - A giant sea monster has taken over a building at Philadelphia’s Navy Yard, but only temporarily. The inflatable sculpture titled “Sea Monsters HERE” is at a rusting warehouse called Building 611. It features huge purple tentacles bursting out of windows and reaching from the rooftop. The 40-foot-long creations sway in the breeze, creating the sense of a huge living creature. It was created by U.K.-based artists Filthy Luker and Pedro Estrellas. They were invited to install the work as part of a collaborative project between Group X, a collection of local artists and organizers, and the Navy Yard. It’s on view until Nov. 16. Once the nation’s first shipyard, the Navy Yard is now a waterfront business campus home to 165 companies.

Proposal on Colorado peak leads to couple’s altitude issues Boulder, Colo. (AP) - A Texas man found a scenic location in the Colorado Mountains to propose to his girlfriend, but the couple ran into trouble on the way down. The Boulder County sheriff’s office says 27-year-old Joshua Mason of Denton, Texas, took 28-year-old Katie Davis on a hike Saturday to Jasper Peak at an elevation of nearly 13,000 feet (4,000 meters). They got lost as darkness fell. The couple were showing signs of altitude sickness and dehydration when a hiker found them. He led them to his camp and gave them food, water and a place to warm up. Another camper called for help. Rescuers reached the camp early Sunday and walked the couple to their car. They didn’t require medical treatment. Sgt. Clay Leak says deputies learned the engagement was still on.

Sexual history survey sent to fifth-graders draws complaints Windsor, Vt. (AP) - A survey that asked fifth-grade students in Vermont about their sexual history, preference and gender identity has drawn complaints from parents. The survey sent to Windsor Elementary School students was conducted by WISE, a nonprofit domestic violence prevention and advocacy group, WPTZ-TV reported. A notice was sent to parents allowing them to opt their children out of the survey, but parent Vanessa Beach said she never received it. While she doesn’t oppose topics on gender identity and sexuality being discussed, Beach said she feels the survey questions were inappropriate for her daughter’s age group. “My daughter is 10. So are all the other kids who took this,” Beach said. “A sexual partner at 10 years old would be called sexual abuse.” A WISE representative said the survey questions were created with University of New Hampshire researchers with whom the group is sharing the collected data. Beach said she told the school and WISE about her concerns. School administrators and WISE officials said they are working to address parents’ complaints. Students are told that they are not required to take the test and can choose not to, a WISE official said. Beach said she appreciates other work WISE does to raise awareness about domestic violence.

Walk on the wild side: Dutch jogger runs into lion cub The Hague, Netherlands (AP) - A jogger’s run through the Dutch countryside turned into a walk on the wild side when he discovered a lion cub in a field. Police say the young cub was found Sunday in a cage dumped in a field near Tienhoven between the central cities of Utrecht and Hilversum. Police have taken to Twitter to appeal for help in tracing the animal’s owner, while the young cub, a male believed to be about five months old, is being cared for by a foundation that looks after big cats. The foundation said on its Facebook page that the cub “is very tired from the hectic events” and is in quarantine. It adds that the cub is drinking water and already feeling at ease in its new surroundings.

Have a look at backgrounds

A couple of weeks ago we dealt with ‘professional’ portraits, and how you could get the same results with basic amateur (and sometimes homemade) equipment). This week we are looking at how to handle backgrounds that may not be quite how you would like them to be seen. The first tip sounds obvious, but you should look at the background before you pop the shutter button. This requires you to practice looking through the viewfinder with the critical eye. It means

that you look beyond the breathtakingly beautiful model posed before your lens and stretch your focus through to the background. Number 1 rule - make the background contrasting where possible. This simply means to have a light background if the person you are shooting has dark hair, and the reverse for those with blonde or white hair. Now to get this may require you to move the model, move yourself or move the location. And let me assure you that this is worthwhile. No matter how good the shot looks as you try so diligently to get a pinpoint focus on your subject - if there is no contrast between subject and background you will be disappointed in the final photograph. The person’s hair will disappear into the background. This is especially so

Dear Hillary, I have been to Thailand more than 20 times, but on my last visit, I actually got a “knock back” from a bar girl. This shook me for quite a while, well 30 seconds at least. As I have been so many times, and have a lot of Thai friends, I have picked up quite a bit of the Thai language. The reason for my knock back was that I was a farang who spoke Thai – not very well, but Thai too much. Although my ego was shattered, I pulled myself together and continued to enjoy my night out, and the rest of my stay. I have my 25th visit planned for Xmas/ New Year, and you are very welcome to join me and my friends for an evening out, with guaranteed Champagne and unlimited chocolate. I love to read the Pattaya Mail from here in the UK, and maybe if you decide to accept my invitation, you could go to the bar in question, and politely tell the pretty young lady that she made a big mistake. I have a very good heart, but she made a big mistake there. David Dear David Ooooh what a lovely man you are. Champagne and unlimited chocolates! What a shame it wasn’t chocolates and unlimited Champagne (French, vintage, of course) and I would have come immediately, my precious Petal. However, since you have been here umpteen times already, you will no doubt realize that the chances of the pretty young lady still being in that particular bar are not high. Come to think of it, the chances of the ‘bar’ still being there are probably not all that good either. Just remember that there are plenty of other pebbles on the beach (which can be viewed on Wednesdays when the deckchairs are missing), and Hillary is sure you will have another wonderful time this year too. Keep learning Thai - as you have already found out, you can be surprised at what you can pick up - or how you can be put down.

when photographing the very dark haired people of Thailand. Just look at some of the news photographs in this issue of the Pattaya Mail and you will see just what I mean. So what can you do if you are stuck with the wrong background? OK, there are several things you can do. The first is to turn on your electronic flash and even

set the camera on automatic with it. Now walk close to the subject and pop the shutter and the flash. What happens here is that the flash will light up the foreground subject, but run out of steam by the time the flash burst reaches the background. By selectively lighting the foreground subject you have achieved that contrast necessary.

Dear Hillary, I notice that most of the letters you get are from farang males who are complaining about what has happened to them in the bar scene. Surely they must see that there is a big difference between that side of Pattaya and the other side? If they were only to look past the end of their noses they would appreciate that there are some truly wonderful girls out there. I have been married to my Thai wife for four years now and there has never been a “bad moment” in all that time. She is beautiful, intelligent (a qualified accountant) and caring. I do not have to change the locks on my doors or worry that my suits will be cut up. She does not need ropes of gold to hold her in the marriage, or motorcycles, or houses. We have a partnership and mutual trust. Why don’t some of these men look for the “good” girls? Amazed Dear Amazed, There may be lots of reasons. One may be that the supply of “wonderful girls” is much less than the demand, so the single males gravitate to the good-time girls, of which there is a more than adequate supply. Look after your wonderful wife and buy her plenty of chocolates (you can send the champagne to me, Hillary, c/o Pattaya Mail, as I am sure she wouldn’t want to drink and spoil the goody goody image) and continue to build on your mutual trust. Bar scene farangs generally are not looking past the end of their noses - it is some other part of the anatomy.

So you haven’t got a daytime flash facility on your camera - what now? Well, very often you can move the subject forward, away from the background and Mother Nature might supply you some light to lift the subject. Even direct overhead light can provide a rim of light around the hair, enough to contrast with the dark background. So what else can you do? Well, if you have an SLR and can manually adjust the lens aperture you can use selective focus to help you. Use the longest lens you have (or the zoom at the highest number), move the subject as far away from the background as possible and move in as close as you can to the subject. In this way you have used the optical qualities of the lens to keep a sharp focus on the subject and throw the background into a hazy, out of focus blur.

Probably the last item to consider is color. When all else fails, or is impossible, position your subject against a contrasting colored background. This time, it is often better to place your subject very close to the background, rather than away from it as we have been doing so far. You want to illuminate the background just as much as the foreground, so you highlight the color contrasts. A yellow dress in front of a red door, for example. So you think you are still in trouble? Well, there’s only one thing left, and it is the advice I give all the time - walk several meters closer! Make the person, your subject, your “hero” fill the frame in the viewfinder. This way you have now almost totally eliminated the background. No longer is it a problem. In some ways it is the perfect solution.

Dear Hillary, I think I have a problem, which is going to bite me on the bum. My local laundry has started to deliver my laundry, instead of me picking it up. That should be good, but the delivery lady is hinting that she wants to be with me. She wants that we go to dinner somewhere and she will take the sheets to the laundry the next morning. If I were 30, this might be a great deal, but I am much older and she’s no spring chicken either. The pressure is every day now. How do I gently get rid of her? Watson Dear Watson, You don’t need Sheer-luck homes to fix your problem. All you have to do is tell her that you are going to have a pool party next weekend at 3 p.m. Invite a few mates and tell them to bring their girlfriends and that the party starts at 4 p.m. She will be so embarrassed being caught naked by a bunch of guys she will scamper off and not invite herself into your pool again. Tell her that you will pick up your own laundry because you are getting a dog to stop people coming in, and she will get the hint. If you are supplying champagne at the party remember to invite me as well. No skinny dipping though, my Petal.

First I got an offer from LSE so I thought maybe I missed out with Cambridge, but then I got an email from them too. “I was shocked to be honest. I was not expecting that at all. My family was over the moon.” Yeen’s progress has been remarkable. When Yeen joined GIS towards the end of Year

Mark Beales When Yeen first started learning at Garden International School, she knew almost no English. After spending a few months with English Language Support teachers, she soon improved. By the time Yeen reached Year 11, she passed her IGCSEs and was even given a ‘top in the world’ award. Yeen has just been awarded a First Class Honours degree from Durham University in accounting and finance and is about to start her post-graduate degree at the world-famous University of Cambridge. Durham is ranked 5th best in the UK, while the University of Cambridge was recently ranked the 2nd best university in the world. Yeen applied to the University of Cambridge last November and had a long wait before hearing she had been successful. She has now just begun studying for her Masters in Real Estate Finance. Yeen said her experience at GIS doing the IB Diploma was excellent preparation for life at the world’s top universities. “When I first came to GIS I was struggling a bit as I couldn’t understand that much and English was quite difficult. The English language support programme, IGCSE and especially IB was great for university. IB isn’t just teaching you language, it’s preparing you for further study. “I remember when you do the Extended Essay for IB it seems like it’s too much to take but here if you have to

You can put that in your CV when you apply to university because they are not just interested in your grades but also your extra-curricular experiences. If you do A levels, they don’t have that kind of subject. If you have the IB Diploma it’s really good for you.” After arriving in Durham in 2015, Yeen settled quickly, making friends with many of the other Asian students who study there. She also found some excellent Thai restaurants, which ensured

she wasn’t homesick. While at Durham, Yeen helped run a Thai society for the 100 Thai students who study at the university, which involved special sports events and a Thai night. Knowing that she wanted to keep studying in the UK, Yeen started applying to top universities such as University College London (UCL), the London School of Economics (LSE) and Cambridge at the end of last year. She said, “My plan was always to continue with a post-graduate degree but I didn’t expect I would be at Cambridge! It took quite a long time for Cambridge to reply and I had applied to a

She quickly progressed, and gained a range of top IGCSE grades. These included an award for having the best score in the world for IGCSE Thai. Yeen then completed her IB Diploma at GIS in 2015, finishing with a score of 38 – at the time, the highest-ever score by a Thai student at GIS. Yeen had some useful tips for our current IB students. “I think the best thing to do is when you have some free

Time management is quite important, you have a lot of deadlines in IB.” Yeen’s sister Khing may be about to follow a similar path. She is also currently in the UK, and is in her final year of her Economics’ degree at the University of Warwick. Congratulations to Yeen for gaining a place at one of the world’s top universities. It’s a great example of what GIS can help students achieve. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya. See www. gardenrayong.com for more.

Neglected water-pipe fills foot-washing pond for beachgoers Warapun Jaikusol A long-neglected puddle of water from a leaking pipe under Pattaya Beach has become a foot-washing pond for tourists. Boat operators say the small lake at Soi 6 has been there for months and neither city hall nor the Pattaya Waterworks Authority has bothered to fix the pipe fueling it. The water is clear and odorless, so the speculation is that its tap water. Tourists, especially those getting off boats from Koh Larn, have taken full advantage of the city’s neglect, using the water to wash off their sandy feet after traipsing across the beach.

A Music Sunday for the PCEC It was the PCEC’s Words & Music event X at the October 14, 2018 meeting. We were welcoming back 11year-old musical wunderkind Ben Rudolf assisted by composer Marcus Tristan to not only entertain us, but to talk about music assessment organizations. Ben has been playing music since the age of four and has been composing for the past two to three years. Ben attends Anda Performing Arts School in Pattaya. This school was founded with the vision of encouraging students to try many new artistic activities in a nurturing environment, while enjoying themselves at the same time. The school has professional instructors from the USA, UK, Philippines, and Thailand. Marcus has worked with Ben and is very impressed with his talent. Ben won first place in the 4-11 age group, at the Yamaha, Junior Eurasian Competition in Bangkok.

MC Judith Edmonds presents the PCEC’s Certificate of Appreciation to Ben Rudolf for his entertaining and informative presentation, while Ben’s father, Bill Gustafsson (far right) and Marcus Tristan (far left) look on.

Marcus, also a self-described child prodigy, mastered the art of composition at a very early age. He started to write music at the age of two and wrote his first extended musical composition at the age of six. Marcus graduated from The Royal Academy of Music in London,

England, in 1990, which is the oldest conservatoire in the UK. While attending the Academy, he took private lessons with Oliver Messiaen and worked as a freelance composer and pianist in the Birmingham area. He played for and wrote dance pieces for an international group of

dancers, including a young Russian dancer, Valentina, whom he later married. Today, Ben was playing on a Yamaha keyboard. All of today’s music was played without any accompanying words. A selection of music by different composers was chosen for the event. Ben looked very comfortable behind the keyboard. The audience were obviously enjoying the performance since the observers’ heads could be seen rocking back and forward in time to the music. Ben mentioned that songs without words were promoted by Felix Mendelssohn. They are pieces of instrumental music, usually for solo piano, that are structured like a lyrical

song and often have a strong melody. Chopin wrote a Barcarolle in F sharp. Where Barcarolle is a Venetian Gondola song, with the melody representing the chant of the Gondolier, and the rolling bass evoking the rolling swell and waves in the canals of Venice. We were informed by Ben that the world has several bodies that assess musical ability. The Yamaha Music School is popular even here in Thailand. Another popular Music School is Trinity Music College in London. Ben follows “The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music” (The ABRSM was founded in 1889). More than 600,000 candidates take ABRSM exams each year in over 93 countries. ABRSM rates musicians according to a scale from 1 to 8 (8 being the highest). The exams are for over 35 instruments and incorporate individual components depending what level you are. The student is required to play pieces from three different types of music. When Ben was performing at the PCEC a year ago he also impressed the audience with his talent by singing “Hallelujah” and John Lennon’s “Imagine”. Visit https:// www.youtube.com/channel/ UCwQ_H0S7zbzWYoWAJZ Pozew for You Tube videos featuring Ben’s musical abilities. Visit http://www. marcustristan.com/ for Marcus Tristan’s webpage. After the presentation, MC Judith Edmonds brought everyone up to date on upcoming events and then turned it over to the Open Forum portion of the meeting where questions are asked and answered and comments made about Expat living in Thailand, Pattaya in particular. The Hills are Alive…

Johann Hummel.

“…with the sound of music” I hear you murmur. Or perhaps I don’t, if you are under thirty and never seen that syrupy, sentimental musical from 1965, The Sound of Music. It starred Julie Andrews and no expense was spared in its production. By the end of the following year it had become the highest grossing movie of all time. Most of the location sequences were filmed in Austria where the story was set. And what else comes to mind at the mention of Austria, I wonder? Perhaps Wiener Schnitzel, Apfelstrudel, or Sachertorte spring to mind or if your interest runs to more esoteric matters, Austria might remind you of Sigmund Freud and Gustav Klimt or the baroque and rococo palaces of imperial days. Austrians are proud of their musical heritage although the influential period of Austrian music was not as long as commonly supposed.

During the Baroque, Austrian composers were a bit thin on the ground. There were only two who are still known, Heinrich Biber and Johann Fux whose name, you might be disappointed to know rhymes with “books” not “ducks”. The years now known as the “classical period” were roughly between 1750 and 1830 and during that time, Austria really made its mark on the musical world. This was largely due to the enormous influence of Joseph Haydn, whose music was available throughout Europe and was widely imitated by other composers. If you’ve ever wondered why so much late 18th century music sounds similar, this is one of the reasons. There were many other Austrian composers especially in Vienna, notably Mozart of course but also Richter, Wagenseil, Monn, Pleyel and Dittersdorf to name but a few.

Nineteenth century Austria saw the appearance of Schubert, the Strauss family, Bruckner and Mahler and the early years of the twentieth saw the rise of the socalled “Second Viennese School” which included Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. But since then, few Austrian composers have achieved international recognition. It cannot have escaped your attention that 26th October is Austria’s National Day, celebrating the country’s declaration of neutrality and its regained status as a sovereign nation. Both composers this week were big names in their day but their music has undeservedly fallen out of fashion.

Johann Baptist Vanhal (1739–1813): Concerto in D major for Double Bass and Orchestra. Kevin Brown (db), Detroit Symphony Orchestra cond. Michelle Merrill (Duration: 21:54; Video: 480p HD) Vanhal was an extremely prolific composer who had a reputation for giving away pages of his music to friends as they left his house. Some works of are still being rediscovered, sometimes

being pieced together from manuscript fragments. Vanhal’s Concerto for Double Bass is considered the finest bass concerto of the time but it has to be admitted, there wasn’t much competition. The double bass was never a popular choice among composers as a concerto instrument, mainly due to the difficulty of balancing the soloist and orchestra. No one seems certain when Vanhal’s concerto was written but the latest research puts it between 1786 and 1789. By 1800 Vanhal’s popularity as a composer had spread as far as America and he had many works in print. With over seventy symphonies and stacks of chamber music he eventually completed more than seven hundred works. This excellent performance demonstrates that this is clearly the composition of a sophisticated composer. There’s a beautiful delicately scored slow movement which has all the grace and elegance of Mozart and an impressive cadenza. In contrast, the sprightly last movement with its distinctive crossrhythms owes more than a little to Haydn.

‘Vietnam’ by Max Hastings is masterful account of the war By JERRY HARKAVY, Associated Press British journalist Max Hastings, noted for his critically acclaimed books about World War II, has fast-forwarded his research and writing talent to a war that many Americans would like to forget. His 900-page work chronicles Vietnam’s tragic history from Ho Chi Minh’s proclamation of an independent state after the 1945 Japanese surrender to the collapse of the South Vietnamese regime 30 years later after the United States cut off ground and air support. Despite ample accounts of heroism and sacrifice on all sides, it’s a story in which each of the principal players — France, the United States, Saigon, Hanoi and the Viet Cong — comes away with well-deserved opprobrium. Unsurprisingly, Hastings concludes that Vietnam was a catastrophe, one that took the lives of as many as 2 million to 3 million combatants and civilians. The war claimed 58,000 American lives, but the number of Vietnamese dead was 40 times greater. This definitive narrative describes how the French debacle at Dien Bien Phu gave rise to the domino theory and the need to halt the spread of communist domination in Southeast Asia. There were more than 500,000

U.S. service personnel in Vietnam by the time of the 1968 Tet offensive, a stunning military defeat for the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong that was transformed into a propaganda victory. After Tet, the war was never the same. CBS anchor Walter Cronkite declared the nation was mired in stalemate, President Lyndon B. Johnson said he would not seek re-election, and the U.S. abandoned any hope of victory and sought instead to extricate itself while avoiding explicit defeat. The fighting would continue for another seven years, a period marked by the My Lai massacre, the invasion of Cambodia and the 1972 Christmas bombing, which Hastings says was designed for partisan political purposes and had no military justification. The narrative includes detailed accounts of all the major battles, with riveting descriptions of what life was like for combatants on both sides. The reader relives the experiences of GIs plodding through booby-trapped jungle, North Vietnamese dodging B52 strikes while heading south on the Ho Chi Minh trail and helicopter pilots braving fire from hot landing zones while inserting troops or extricating the wounded. (AP)

Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837): Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major. Robert Frear (tpt) Cole Conservatory Symphony Orchestra cond. Johannes Müller-Stosch (Duration: 18:13; Video: 720p HD) Hummel was a child prodigy. When he was eight years old, Mozart was so impressed with the boy’s skills and musicianship that he provided tuition and accommodation for two years free of charge. Hummel later studied with Haydn, Salieri and Clementi and became one of the greatest pianists of his day. Like Mozart before him, Hummel’s father

took him on a European tour. He stayed four years in London where Haydn also happened to be at the time. In 1791, Haydn composed a piano sonata for the thirteenyear-old star who gave its first performance in London’s prestigious Hanover Square Rooms. Hummel’s trumpet concerto lies stylistically somewhere between the music of Haydn and the young Beethoven, who Hummel knew well. It was first performed on New Year’s Day 1804 to mark the composer’s appointment as Head Musician at Prince Esterházy’s court orchestra, succeeding Haydn. Perhaps it’s no accident that the galloping, technically-challenging last movement gives a passing nod to the music of the older composer.

Chazelle’s ‘First Man’ is at once intimate and grand

Jocelyn Noveck Los Angeles (AP) - Nearly a half-century has passed since the majestic moment when Neil Armstrong stepped carefully onto the lunar landscape, left foot first, taking that giant leap for mankind. Whether you were alive then and glued to the TV, or relived it later through that iconic, grainy NASA footage, what you probably remember is just that: The majesty. You’re probably not thinking much about the deafening noise, the claustrophobia, the terror of blasting off in a rickety sardine can that could fail at any moment for any of a thousand reasons. Or the fact that Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin could have ended up stranded, left to die on the moon; President Richard Nixon had a speech ready for that dark scenario. You will, though, be thinking of these things as you watch “First Man,” the latest installment in director Damien

Chazelle’s meteoric career — and sorry for the space pun, but it’s entirely apt. An intimate character study that somehow becomes grand just when it needs to, “First Man,” based on the book by James R. Hansen with a script by Josh Singer, is a worthy successor not only to Chazelle’s “Whiplash” and “La La Land,” but to the astronaut films that precede it, like “Apollo 13” and especially “The Right Stuff.” It’s also, amazingly, the first feature film about Armstrong. Chazelle’s partner here is Ryan Gosling, who dials down his obvious star wattage to give an internalized, fully committed performance as the “reluctant hero,” as Armstrong’s own family described him. Gosling’s task here is not merely to give dimension to a mythical American hero. He also has to play a man who famously kept his emotions in check. That may not be an asset for a movie character, but sure was an asset for the first human to set foot on another world. And that’s because this stuff was, well, terrifying! We begin in 1961, during

Armstrong’s test pilot days. Taking a hypersonic X-15 up for a spin, he’s suddenly in trouble; he can’t get back down. “Neil, you’re bouncing off the atmosphere,” comes the rather concerned voice from below. He makes it back, though, barely breaking a sweat. As for us, we’re irretrievably rattled. From the heavens we go to a small home office, where Armstrong is on the phone, trying to find help for his toddler daughter, ill with cancer. His grief over her fate will remain a theme of the film

until the end. But it remains unspoken, even to his stoic wife, Janet, played here with subtlety and grit by the wonderful Claire Foy. Seeking a fresh start, Armstrong becomes an astronaut in NASA’s Gemini program. On Gemini 8, he successfully docks his spacecraft with another before suffering a harrowing inflight emergency. The split-second that separates giddy success from terrifying failure, the tiny, claustrophobic spaces, the flimsy materials, the shaking,

the roaring, the positively ancient-looking technology — Chazelle illustrates all of this, indelibly. And we’re forced to wonder: How did they ever make it into space even once? On the ground, meanwhile, we see what it’s like to be a loved one. During Gemini, Janet explodes at Armstrong’s boss, Deke Slayton (an excellent Kyle Chandler): “You’re a bunch of boys making models out of balsa wood! You don’t have ANYTHING under control.” Then there’s the devastating launch-pad testing disaster that killed Armstrong’s fellow astronauts, Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee and Ed White. Hearing the news on the phone, Armstrong clutches a wine glass so tightly, he breaks it and gashes his hand. But if he has qualms about going forward, he doesn’t show it. One of the more chilling scenes is a brief look at NASA bosses reviewing the speech Nixon will give if the men can’t get off the moon, and what he’ll say to the “soon-to-be widows.”

And then, the mission. That famous walk to the launchpad, the astronauts waving, the applause. You hold your breath imagining how Chazelle will pull off the landing itself. With a granite quarry in Georgia standing in for the moonscape, it’s as grand and beautiful as you’d want. And yet it’s not a mere recreation of what we’ve seen before. There’s been a distracting controversy over whether Chazelle “ignores” the precise moment when astronauts planted a flag. It’s silly for many reasons, but especially because this isn’t a movie about symbols, or myths. It’s about men — especially one man. After the grandeur of the moon landing, an event that still boggles the mind, the movie ends on a note of extreme quiet: just two people staring at each other. “First Man,” a Universal Studios release, has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America “for some thematic content involving peril, and brief strong language.” Running time: 141 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

Pendragon: ‘Windows of Life’ mott@pattayamail.com Formed in 1978, Pendragon have been a central figure in the neo-progressive rock music scene for over forty years, always on the fringe of fame, but never quite crossing over into the mainstream. Quite why is a mystery; they certainly do not lack any of the required skills. Although so saying, there are pockets of ardent Pendragon fans dotted around the world - Poland and Germany being particular strongholds. Pendragon, after early predictable band member comings and goings, have had a pretty consistent line up since 1986, with only twice the drummer being changed. Nick Barret is often seen as the band’s figurehead, playing lead guitar and performing the vocal duties. Peter Gee meanwhile on bass guitar is one of the best in the business and has released some nice solo albums of his own, allowing

him to show off some different musical talents other than in the Pendragon progressive manner. On keyboards is Clive Nolan, a man that deserves his own review. Becoming the youngest ever recipient of the ALCM Musical Composition Diploma, he has been with Pendragon since 1986. He has also found time to form fine bands such as Arena since 1995 (9 studio albums, 5 live albums) and Shadowlands since 1992 (4 studio albums.) He also

recorded two concept albums with Oliver Wakeman, the nonsensically delightful “Jabberwocky” from 1999 and “The Hound of the Baskervilles” in 2002. On drums for Pendragon at the time of this recording was the fabulously named Fudge Smith.

Nick Barrett.

After two albums of finding their way, Pendragon launched the wonderfully named Toff Records in 1991 and proceeded down the road of progressive rock. Their first release in 1991 was “The World”, which proclaimed from the castle balustrades their musical intentions. This was followed in 1993 by this magnificent album, “Windows of Life”. The album opener “Walls of Babylon” has a symphonic opening from Nolan’s keyboards before Barrett’s guitar cuts in with some excellent lead guitar soloing. The rhythm section then comes crashing in and the

song is away. It takes some four and a half minutes for the song itself to get underway and the vocals to arrive. Fourteen minutes for your opening track is a bold statement, but the whole song has a very grand feel about it, with hints of Pink Floyd’s “Shine on you Crazy Diamond” followed by some late Peter Gabriel era Genesis driving music. Take your influences from the best! Next up is “Ghosts”, which presents a piano intro before Barrett’s harrowing vocals take over and some more excellently controlled guitar. “The Last Man on Earth” is the centerpiece of the album and is an epic in every sense

of the word, while the last two songs on the album show that even progressive rock bands can write commercial material. A running time of over fifty four minutes of quality music was always good value, but since the 2006 re-release of this album, the EP “Fallen Dreams and Angels” from 1994 has been added on so you get an extra twenty minutes of class music. Pendragon’s last studio album was “Men Who Climb Mountains” released in 2014, so we must be due a new album soon. The sleeve artwork of the review album by Simon Williams is also colorful, bright and witty.

Banglamung District Chief Naris Niramaiwong checked on the progress of the construction of the land vehicle to be used in the 3 p.m. Pattaya parade Oct. 16 at the Sanctuary of Truth, which is cosponsoring the historical spectacular. The event, which will carry a portrait of the fabled king along with seven cannons by water and land from Chantaburi to Pattaya, is divided into two parts, with a boat leaving from Chanthaburi and making stops in Rayong before coming to Pattaya and Chonburi Oct. 29 and 30. The boat parade will stop at Soi 6 in Pattaya where Buddhist chanting, a parade and entertainment is planned to last into the evening. The boat then again will carry the portrait and cannons to the Chonburi provincial hall Oct. 30. (PCPR)

China opens mega-bridge linking Hong Kong to mainland Dake Kang Zhuhai, China (AP) - China on Tuesday opened the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge linking Hong Kong to the mainland, a feat of engineering carrying immense economic and political significance. Chinese President Xi Jinping presided over a ceremony in the city of Zhuhai to open the 55-kilometer (34mile)-long bridge linking it to the semi-autonomous regions of Hong Kong and Macau. Digital fireworks

exploded on a screen behind him as leaders of the three cities looked on. The $20 billion bridge took almost a decade to build while incurring major delays and cost overruns. It includes an undersea tunnel allowing ships to pass through the Pearl River delta, the heart of China’s crucial manufacturing sector. Its opening will cut travel time across the delta from several hours to just 30 minutes, something China hopes will bind the region together as a major driver of future economic growth. Heavily regulated traffic using permits issued under a quota system began flowing

on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The bridge forms a physical link between the

mainland and Hong Kong, an Asian financial hub that was handed over from British to Chinese control in 1997 with the assurance it would maintain its own legal and economic system for 50 years. That carries major political significance for Xi’s administration, which has rejected calls for political liberalization in Hong Kong, sparking fears Beijing will clamp down further on civil liberties before the end of the “one country, two systems” arrangement in 2047. The bridge’s opening also comes a month after

the inauguration of a new high-speed rail link from Hong Kong to mainland China that runs along a different, shorter route. That line has vastly decreased travel times but also raised concerns about Beijing’s growing influence because mainland Chinese law applies within part of the line’s Hong Kong terminus. To Claudia Mo, a Hong Kong democratic politician, the new bridge’s political significance outweighs its practical usefulness. “It’s not exactly necessary, because Hong Kong is connected to mainland China in every way already, by land, by air, by sea,” Mo told The Associated Press. “But they still need it as a political symbol or icon to remind Hong Kong people ... that you are connected to the motherland, with this very grand bridge. It’s almost like an umbilical cord.” In Zhuhai, however, sentiments revolved around economic growth and national pride. Airline pilot Liu Gang said he’d been eagerly anticipating

close ties with Hong Kong and Macau. “It’ll bring us even closer together, make us more flexible, economically and in many other ways. We’re now one family,” Liu said Monday afternoon while strolling along a walkway and shooting photos of the structure. Luo Fengzhi, who works in real estate, cited the bridge as evidence of China’s growing economic and engineering prowess. “For Chinese people, this makes them feel proud,” she said. “I hope that every patriotic Chinese person can come and see this great feat of engineering, and I welcome foreigners to come and see for themselves as well.”

Lee’s Burapha blitz The Traveller’s Rest Golf Group Monday, Oct. 15, Greenwood – Stableford 1st Derek Thorogood (18) 38pts 2nd Graeme Gamble (13) 38pts 3rd Jim Sykes (14) 36pts Greewood on Monday and the scribe managed to overcome the dreaded shanks long enough to keep the ball in the sweet spot and post six pars on the back nine. His inward twenty-two points proved enough to beat Graeme Gamble on a countback to claim the first prize.

Tuesday, Oct. 16, Green Valley – Stableford 1st Neil Wilkinson (14) 42pts 2nd Ron Hulen (14) 35pts 3rd Richard Talbot (16) 34pts Tuesday we were back at the Valley where Neil Wilkinson had a steady front nine with eighteen

points but absolutely smashed it on the back nine with an incredible display of iron shots to pick up a further twenty four points, beating his closest rival by a massive seven shots.

today he took on the mighty Phoenix and clipped its wings to claim victory with a measly 33 points. Normally Phoenix records some very high scores but not today. Although the “Hawk” may have won the battle, Phoenix was the real victor holding the entire field to below par!

Wednesday, Oct. 17, Pattana – Stableford 1st John O’Donoghue (21) 36pts 2nd Bobby Rattanaruangsup (22) 35pts 3rd New Boysen (21) 35pts We drove up the 331 to Pattana in beautiful sunshine and not a dark cloud in sight, however this all changed by the 9th hole with the loudest clap of thunder most of us had ever heard. About a minute later another one went off which was even louder than the first and with the siren wailing across the course everyone scurried to the nearest drinks station for cover. Within minutes a mini-tornado blew

rain at right angles and we were treated to an awesome display of the power of Mother Nature. After about an hour or so it began to subside and almost fifteen minutes later we were back out on the course with the sun belting down and in steaming hot sauna conditions. Don’t you just love the Thai weather? Anyway, undeterred John O’Donoghue had a nineteen

point start and ended up completing the round with a very respectable 36 points to take the day’s honours.

Steele excels at Khao Kheow PSC Golf from The Growling Swan Monday, Oct. 15, Pattavia - Stableford Seven golfers chose to head out to play Pattana, one of the better courses that Pattaya has to offer. With plenty of overnight rain we were surprised that carts were still allowed on the course but we still played ‘lift, clean & place’ as there were areas that were somewhat water-logged. The weather was definitely on our side, conditions to play were excellent and just to show how lucky we were the heavens opened as we got on the bus to head home. We played from the yellow tees, and played B and C nines in that order. Keith Buchanan, returning from his 5 day golfing adventure, showed the way and took the day’s honours with 34 points. With our numbers down we only had one winner on the podium along with the 4 near pins, which went to Keith Buchanan (2), Alex Field and Colin Phillips.

Thursday, Oct. 18, Khao Kheow Stableford 1st Denis Steele (14) 41pts

Tom Morris with Alex Field.

2nd Alex Field (17) 40pts 3rd Tom Morris (12) 37pts Near Pins: Bill Steinmann (2), Mashi Kaneta (2). Long Putt: Sal Brizzi, Alex Field. Fifteen golfers made the trip to Khao Kheow today where the green fee of Bt.800 makes it hard to resist. Playing from the yellow tees we attacked the B & C course which was in good shape despite the recent rain. ‘Buffalo’ Bill Steinmann completed the first 9 holes with a very good score of 20 points, but we are led to believe he was then abducted by a band of raiders. Bill

managed to escape his captors but it obviously affected his game as he only managed 7 more points on the inward nine holes. It sounds like a tall story but what else could explain his dramatic drop in form. Denis Steele set the crowd alight today, returning to form with a massive and one would say excellent 41 points. Coming in second, and not very far behind was Alex Field, also returning to the top ranks. Completing the podium in third was Tom Morris who bumped out Mashi via the countback system.

Thursday, Oct. 18, Phoenix - Stableford 1st Don Hawkins (15) 33pts 2nd Mike Rushant (11) 32pts 3rd Alex Fenwick (20) 32pts Youmayrememberthe“Hawk” who went M.I.A earlier in the year, well he’s back again and

Division 1 1st Mike Rushant (12) 39pts 2nd Gerry Fernandez (12) 34pts 3rd Bill Reid (11) 33pts Division 2 1st Lawrence Lee (27) 45pts 2nd Alex Fenwick (12) 40pts 3rd Andrew Rich (12) 40pts It was this time last week on A & B courses at Burapha that Lawrence Lee claimed his first ever TRGG win with forty points. Well today he completely blew that out of

the water by posting the week’s highest score as well as his own personal best score of 45 points to take out division 2’s number one spot. In division one it was Mike “The Machine” Rushant, who popped his shoulder earlier in the week when he fell out of bed, that fought on through the pain and impressed everyone with a fine round of 39 points.

Saturday, Oct. 20, Treasure Hill – Stableford 1st Richard Talbot (18) 31pts 2nd JohnO’Donoghue(14)31pts 3rd Tommy Bjerrum (36) 30pts We closed the week out at Treasure Hill where Richard Talbot finally got his name on the leader board and won the day on a count back with 31 points. Once again it was the course that emerged victorious as only three players shot thirty points or better.

One up for Hall at Chee Chan PSC Golf from Lewinskis Wednesday, Oct. 17, Chee Chan G.C. Stableford Div A 1st Ron Beattie (14) 33pts 2nd Clinton Hall (14) 32pts 3 rd David Dawson (11) 29pts Div B 1st Bob Fagan (20) 33pts 2nd Victor Nesbitt (14) 29pts 3rd Charlie Miller (11) 29pts This was the second Wednesday that we linked up with the Kull Bar from the darkside to play the new course Chee Chan, near Buddha Mountain. The previous week, Weds 10th Oct, we had a combined total of 11 players with Gareth Gill (Kull Bar) winning with 33pts while Geoff Tordoff (Lewinskis) took second on 30, beating Mick Beresford on countback. This week the total numbers climbed up to 26 players (12 from Kull and 14 from Lewinskis). The decision was easy for the 2 venues to run their own competitions. At Lewinskis, we divided the players into two divisions, Div A (0 - 14) and Div B (15+). In the premier flight Ron Beattie took the honours with 33 points, one ahead of

Clinton Hall (from left), Charlie Miller and Victor Nesbitt.

Clinton Hall while David Dawson was third. Bob Fagan also scored 33 points to won the second division, leaving Bob Fagan to take second on countback over Charlie Miller. For a new course, Chee Chan is in amazing condition, the fairways are so good, carts are allowed on them, which is a great plus for the place and the greens are of good speed. The comments from the players were very favourable, with the exception that they permit 5-balls to play but that is just something we all have to get used to in Thailand. The rate look set to stay at the promotional

level of 3200 baht until the end of the year. We currently plan to remain here every Wednesday.

Friday, Oct. 19, Siam Old Course Stableford 10 players today at a relatively quiet course for a Friday, allowing our three groups to getaway on time. Clinton Hall improved on his second place on Wednesday at Chee Chan to win with an excellent 38 points, with Charlie Miller second on 36 and Victor Nesbitt third with 30. Our new schedule starts on 5th Nov at Green Valley with a 10.30 start.

PATTAYA MAIL

In-form Barnett takes the honours PSC Golf from The Billabong Bar Monday, Oct. 15, Royal Ratchaburi Stableford Having a trip away with friends and a change of venue from the norm is always something to look forward to and a trip to Kanchanaburi, was as good as any and 44 golfers made their way west on Monday morning knowing the courses were going to be spectacular. We were not disappointed. Royal Ratchaburi Golf Club was highly recommended by those that had played here previously and this slightly hilly course is set in pleasant countryside and contains many good and testing holes with views of the distant mountains. The fairways are generous but woe betide those that stray off the straight and narrow for the dense trees lining the fairways and a profusion of bunkers (as many as 13 on one hole) will make life difficult for you, as will the local residents – thousands of monkeys, who seem to have no appreciation of golf. John Stafford came 5th with 37 points, just short of Dave

There were five 2s, making the total birdies on par-3s to 23 these last 3 days perhaps to highlight how good the greens were. Overall, Ian Moore, Wayne Cotterell and Gerard Lambert shared 4th place each with 103 points following Selwyn Wegner and Mike Quill on 106 to share 2nd place, but there could only be one winner and that was Jason Barnett playing brilliant golf on each of the 3 days off his 5 handicap.

Brawley on 38 points and Ian Moore on 39. Two golfers came in with 40 points each and Jason Barnett lost out to Mike Quill on countback, having 13 points to Mike’s 15. The greens were so true, we had nine 2s.

Tuesday, Oct. 16, Grand Prix G.C. – Stableford The word spectacular does not do credit to this golf course. Standing on the balcony of the clubhouse, situated on the highest point in the area, the panoramic views are astounding for you can see that the course is surrounded by mountains, many over the border in Myanmar. It is impossible to have a poor lie on the fairways here but water on 14 of the holes can have you running to the golf shop to replenish you supply of balls. Capt. Bob had a good day with 35 points and 5th place, 1 point behind Martin Cooke who had 2 blobs on his card. Peter Terry had 23 on the front nine but fell away at the turn for 37 points, losing on a countback to Sel Wegner

who had two 4-pointers on the way home to help him to claim 2nd place, but Jason Barnett carded a 71 gross and 42 points despite dropping 2 shots on the last 2 holes. The par-3s are not long at Grand Prix but punish severely those that do not hit the green and yielded another nine 2s.

Wednesday, Oct. 17, Lam Luk Ka Stableford With 36 holes and situated on the outskirts of Bangkok, Lam Luk Ka C & D is another beautiful manicured course with a more open design than the previous two courses but, beware, for there is water on every hole just waiting for

Van Dyk tops the field PSC Golf from the Tropical Golf Group Tuesday, Oct. 16, Pattana A &B – Stableford Middle of the month and we found ourselves off for our monthly encounter at one of the more challenging and scenic layouts in the area. There is plenty of water and bunkers to avoid at Pattana while attacking 18 holes where the design differs adequately to create many different options to play each hole. And, at this point, still a reasonable low season green fee rate although the caddy and cart fees have gone up since our September visit, a possible sign of things to come as the transition to high season occurs. Assigned to play the “A” & “B” nines, the longest of the possible combinations, and told that carts were restricted to the cart paths due to the daily afternoon/evening showers, it was once again “lift, clean, & place” through the green, which has become the norm rather than the exception. Due to the smaller group of players this day there were no technical or “Best 9‘s” awards so it was straight to the 5 best stableford scores. Atop the podium with an excellent 39 points stood

the opportunity to relieve you of that new ball. After 2 days of making merry, the scores were not quite as impressive, which is hardly surprising, but good all the same. A countback was needed to separate the minor placings with Wayne Cotterell having 18 points on the back nine but Paul Hack accumulated 19 to occupy 4th place. Gerard Lambert had high expectations after 21 points on the way out but 2 blobs on the way in placed him in 3rd place with 36 points. Mick Beresford pushed the star of the trip, Jason Barnett, to a countback on 37 points but a blob on the back allowed Jason to occupy top spot once again.

It was Burapha today playing A and B loops. We were joined by our friends from Geralton, Western Australia and the boys really had a day out and taught the local lads how to play golf. The greens today were not as fast as normal with a lot of putts being left short of the hole, but even after all the rain the course has received it was still in great condition. Taking 4th place was Jason Barnett with 34 points on a countback, 3rd place went to Wes Rado with a fine 36 points, Scotty Baumgarten took 2nd with 40 points and his good mate Mike Quill just beat him with 41. There were seven ‘2’s, coming from Sandy Chapo, Wes Rado, Jack Beaumont, Jason Barnett, Glenn Smith, Jerry Sweetnam and Mark Rossitor.

Dick Warberg,

Andre Van Dyk (left) with Derek Brook.

Andre Van Dyk (c/h 17), four points clear of Derek Brook (29) with his fine 35 point effort. Then it was into a count-back on 34 points for 3rd taken by John Davis (11) over Mashi Kaneta (15) and a further count-back on 33 points saw Don Carmody (30) edge out Dick Warberg and John Anderson for the fifth and final spot.

Friday, Oct. 19, Mt. Shadow – Stableford The last group visit to Mountain Shadow was way back in March just as the high season was winding down and it was, as usual for this track, a tough outing with no one meeting their handicap. Why such a

long time between visits one asks? Well, as said, it’s a tough track, and although the fairways and greens are average to above average and definitely playable, the unkempt condition of the area in general is definitely a drawback, what with such a large number of courses in the area to choose from. With the extremely high and dense growth at the entrance, between fairways and along the property boundaries it almost seems as if the course was just recently carved out of a dense jungle. Shots hit into these areas were lost balls no question. No need to even bother trying to look. Therefore the challenge of the day and the

round was to keep it generally straight and in the short grass. The course was not crowded and the pace of play, considering some extra time looking along the dense undergrowth was good. The only other comment was with regard to caddies. It is that time of the year when the courses are filling out their caddy ranks after the low season and ramping up for the high season, an excellent chance of being assigned a new caddy. With a relatively small group this day how would the players deal with the challenges the course had to offer? Leading the way was Dick Warberg (c/h 23) with a 30 point effort followed by John Davis (11) and Bob Britton (13), both with hard earned 27 points. With those results the answer has to be “Not Well” and we must say Mt. Shadow definitely won the day.

Stafford sails home at Riverside PSC Golf Pattaya Links Golf Society Monday, Oct. 15, Bangpakong Riverside - Stableford 1st Bernie Stafford (18) 40pts 2nd Len Jones (30) 39pts 3rd Bill Copeland (16) 38pts The golfers teed off today on a course in magnificent condition. Superlatives cannot do it justice and the fairways, which were immaculate, allowed some run whilst the greens were a joy to putt on with their consistency. The single flight saw a tight battle ensue with two golfers going head-to-head on the back nine. Unfortunately, one poor drive on the fourteenth saw Mr Len’s challenge waver and the advantage went to marker Bernie Stafford, who eventually finished

Darren Beavers Wayne Peppernell (centre) with Ed Wyckoff (right) and Jeff Hunt.

with forty points, one ahead of Len’s thirty-nine. In the following group Bill Copeland was drawing his current stay to a close with another fine round of thirty eight points.

Near pins went to Chris Barker (4), Masa Takano (7), Larry Slattery (13) and Colin Service (16), whilst the best front nine of 19 points went to John Mason, with Darren Beavers taking the back nine on 18 points.

Wednesday, Oct. 17, Greenwood A & C Stableford A Flight 1st Kevin Rogers (13) 38pts 2nd Livio Marrone (6) 34pts 3rd Chris Barker (13) 34pts B Flight 1st Darren Beavers (20) 38pts 2nd Pierre Zbinden (21) 37pts 3rd Wayne Peppernell (16) 37pts

For the second time in three weeks the society visited Greenwood to play a stableford competition on the A and C nines. On the previous visit the course was very wet and played extremely long but this time carts were allowed full access, but just in case, the group played from the yellow tees. The field was divided into two flights at fifteen and under and in the top flight Livio Marrone edged Chris Barker into third place on countback, his 34 points giving him second place. The flight winner was Kevin Rogers with 38 points. In the second flight countback was used to decide the minor places with

Pierre Zbinden’s 37 points taking preference over Wayne Peppernell’s fine efforts. The flight winner was Darren Beavers, winner here three weeks ago, with 38 points, and as a bonus his back nine was better than that of Kevin Rogers so he took the green jacket as well. Near pins went to Kevin Rogers (A2), Tony Browne (A6), Ron Matthews (C3) and Tim Dale (C6.) Masa Takano’s 19 points on the front nine was the best of the non winners as was Derek Phillips in a run of 20 points on the C nine.

Friday, Oct. 19, Eastern Star – Stableford 1st Wayne Peppernell (16) 36pts 2nd Mike Firkin (24) 35pts 3rd Dave Arataki (28) 34pts 4th Len Jones (30) 33pts The society ended the week with a welcome visit to Eastern Star to play a stableford competition on the course which was relatively unaffected by the seasonal downpours, except there was little run on the fairways and bunkers were soft. The greens however were very

consistent and running at a fair pace. Nineteen golfers were kept in a single flight and as always good scores were at a premium on the testing course. The upside was that the white tees were well forward on most of the tee boxes. A close encounter showed Len Jones taking fourth place with 33 points on countback from Tony Browne and Dave Arataki in third with 34. Mike Firkin again bullied the course with a bruising 35 points for second place, missing out on the closing holes with some unforced errors and bad luck. The winner was Wayne Peppernell with an excellent 36 points on his swansong round before returning to Australia. Tony Browne’s diligence on the Links golf simulator paid dividends as he took the best front nine award with 21 points whilst Masa Takano took the best back nine award for his 16 points, an indication of the toughness of the course. Near pins went to Wayne Peppernell (3), Derek Phillips (6), Dave Stockman (13) and Maurice Roberts (17).

Brown bags the medal The Tara Court Golf Society Sunday, Oct. 14, Green Valley – Medal A Flight 1st Stuart Brown (7) net 68 2nd Craig Hitchens (13) net 72 3rd Jerry Sweetnam (10) net 74 B Flight 1st Ian Corica (27) net 75 2nd Terry Mangan (22) net 77 3rd Joe McArdle (17) net 77

It was monthly medal time again here at Green Valley today where we had our largest group for a long while and two flights. Although we were lucky again with the weather, the course was wet and playing very long, which is probably why with one or two exceptions the scoring wasn’t great.

I suppose if you want to win the gold medal in January, which is the one everyone wants to win, the best way to do it is to keep the competition down. This is exactly what Stuart Brown did today as he won his second monthly medal for this year, thereby making sure there would be one less to play for the gold. Not only did Stuart win it but he did it in style with a net sixty-eight, four shots clear of his nearest rival. Craig Hitchens played to his handicap to come second in the A flight with a net seventy two and Jerry Sweetnam came third with a net seventy four. The scoring in the B flight was a lot worse and here Ian Corica won with a net seventy-five and we then had two players with a net seventy seven and here Terry Mangan won the countback. We had two ‘2’s today, coming from Craig Robson and Stuart Brown.

Tuesday, Oct. 16, Chee Chan G.C. Medal 1st Paddy Naughton (15) net 72 2nd Pat Carty (20) net 76 3rd Craig Robson (9) net 81

Paddy Naughton.

4th Glen Eldershaw (15) net 81 We decided to give the new course at Chee Chan a try today while they are still giving a fairly reasonable price to see what it is like and we were all very impressed with it. It is a long course with the shortest tees being over 6,500 yards and with many of the tees being well back on the tee boxes it was even longer than that. For a course which has just opened it is in magnificent condition, with both the fairways and the greens being excellent. Because the score card doesn’t have any indexes on it yet we had to play a medal competition and most of our group found that very difficult. We only had one player play to his handicap and that

was Paddy Naughton who won with a net seventy two. Pat Carty was four shots adrift but he still came second with a net seventy six and after that we had two players with a net eighty one and here Craig Robson won the count back to come third and to make it better he had the only ‘2’ of the day.

Thursday, Oct. 18, Burapha - Stableford A Flight 1st Kevyn Wright (10) 35pts 2nd Jerry Sweetnam (10) 33pts 3rd Craig Robson (9) 32pts B Flight 1st Ted Morris (20) 35pts 2nd Joe Peters (23) 28pts 3rd Pat Carty (20) 27pts We are now coming near the end of the Sport Days

here at Burapha for this year so we had a larger group out today to take advantage of playing this beautiful course at a very reasonable price. We had two flights with the cut coming in at fifteen. The scoring wasn’t great, with no one managing to play to their handicaps but we had one of our friends do something which was a first for our group. I won’t embarrass him by naming him as he is a very steady golfer and features in the prizes very often but today he managed to score only one point on the B course for a total of eleven points, something which I don’t think anyone ever did before. Kevyn Wright was the winner of the A flight with thirty five points, Jerry Sweetnam came second with thirty three and Craig Robson won the count back to come third with thirty two. Ted Morris won the B flight with thirty five points and Joe Peters was surprised to hear that he came second with twenty eight. Pat Carty got the third and last place with twenty seven. We had two ‘2’s today, from Phelim Moran and Kevyn Wright.

As we drove into the course via the back entrance the course looked extremely busy, some tees had two groups waiting so it looked like a slow days play was in store. The standard of play was very variable from quite good to mediocre at best. Golf lessons are already paying dividends for Les Hall who took first place with a fine score of net seventy we should now start to see his generous handicap come down quite a bit. 1st Geoff Parker (15) 31pts 2nd Geoff Cox (16) 31pts 3rd Neil Carter (12) 31pts On arrival at Treasure Hill, we found an empty car park so we were confident of a quick round and as it turned out that’s exactly what we got, our lead group were finished within three hours. The course was in good condition but the greens, recently cored and sanded were the worst we have encountered this year. Course maintenance is unavoidable and necessary but it’s going to take some time for these greens to recover, they were extremely slow and bumpy and made an already difficult course almost impossible on which to accumulate a decent score as was reflected in the results. One of our groups had the added challenge of dealing with a caddie who experienced an epileptic seizure. Despite the difficulty of the course, scores were very close with four golfers

locked together on thirtyone points and a further two on thirty points. First place went to Geoff Parker, second to Geoff Cox and Neil Carter took third. Geoff Parker also managed to snag a near pin with Michael Brett taking the other three.

recently made a bold prediction that he intends to go back to back in the club championship. Confidence is an essential element of good sporting performance and if he continues in this vein of form who could doubt him? Neil Carter continues to perform well and took second place with thirty-six

points, two seconds and a third place keeps Neil well in the race for golfer of the month. Myke Thomas, in his last round before returning to Oz, got into the winners circle for the first time with thirty-five points beating Michael Brett on count back. Myke also took a near pin while Michael Brett took two.

1st Ken Davidson (23) 41pts 2nd Neil Carter (12) 36pts 3rd Myke Thomas (19) 35pts Forty kilometers away from the rain of Pattaya the Greenwood course was bathed in sunshine, well at least no rain. The course was in beautiful condition with smooth fast greens making Wednesday’s horror a distant memory. There was little or no wind and at times the day was hot and humid. Reigning club champion Ken Davidson was having an average round until the seventh hole when he exploded into form with eleven points on the closing three holes giving him a twenty-one total on the front nine. He continued on his way with twenty on the back to take first place with forty-one points. Ken

Brooks Koepka takes No. 1 spot, winning CJ Cup Jeju Island, South Korea (AP) — Brooks Koepka took the No. 1 spot in the world ranking from Dustin Johnson last Sunday, finishing his victory in the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges with a 25foot eagle putt. Koepka won by four strokes, playing the back nine in 7-under 29 for an 8under 64 and a 21-under 267 total. He holed a 70-foot chip-and-run for birdie on the par-4 16th. The 28-year-old American has won three of his last 11 starts, also taking major titles in the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. He has five PGA Tour victories. Gary Woodland was second after a 63. Ryan Palmer birdied the last seven holes for a course-record 62. He tie for third with Rafa Cabrera Bello (65) at 15 under. Koepka won in his first start of the new season after taking PGA Tour Player of the Year honors last season. He’s the third player this year to reach No. 1 for the first time, joining Justin Rose and Justin Thomas. The last time that happened was in 1997 with Ernie Els, Tom Lehman and Tiger Woods.

Garcia wins rainshortened Andalucia Valderrama Masters Sotogrande, Spain — Sergio Garcia won his third Andalucia Valderrama Masters on Monday, finishing the rain-shortened European Tour event four shots ahead of Shane Lowry. Garcia shot a 2-under 69 for a 12-under 201 total in the 54-hole tournament at the Real Club Valderrama in southern Spain. Lowry shot

a 66 in the final round. Garcia, the tournament host, had a three-shot lead before the turn when stormy conditions suspended play on Sunday. He had three birdies and a bogey when play resumed on Monday, enough to add to his Valderrama titles in 2011 and 2017. Lowry was as close as one shot off the lead after a round that included seven birdies. His title chances ended with a double bogey at the par-3 15th hole. “Obviously Shane was playing well, he got close to me, then unfortunately he doubled 15 and that gave me a little bit of an extra gap, with his double and my birdie on 14 opening it to four, and we kept it there until the end so that was nice,” Garcia said. Lee Westwood (70) finished tied for fifth.

Sunday’s race and could have denied Marquez the title with a win but crashed out of second place with two laps to go and ended up with no points. Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi was fourth while Alvaro Bautista rounded out the top five on a Ducati.

London (AP) — That epic 70-68 fifth set at Wimbledon will never be matched or surpassed, or even challenged. The All England Club said last week it will introduce final-set tiebreakers next year, starting when the score reaches 12-12 in the decider. The grass-court Grand Slam tournament is the second of the four majors to use a final-set tiebreaker to determine a singles match — either the fifth set in a men’s match or the third set for the women. The U.S. Open, however, starts its final-set tiebreakers at 6-6. At the Australian Open and the French Open, players still have to win by two games in the final set in singles matches. “Our view was that the time had come to introduce a tiebreak method for matches that had not reached their natural conclusion at a reasonable point during the deciding set,” Wimbledon chairman Philip Brook said in a statement. In a tiebreaker, the first player to get seven points — leading by at least two points — wins the set. In 2010, John Isner and Nicolas Mahut played the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon. The match took more than 11

hours and lasted over three days before Isner won 70-68 in the final set. This year, eventual finalist Kevin Anderson played a pair of long matches late in the tournament. He beat eight-time champion Roger Federer 13-11 in the fifth set in the quarterfinals, and then defeated Isner 26-24 in the fifth in the semifinals. In the other semifinal match, Novak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal 10-8 in the fifth set. Two of those three matches would still be possible. “While we know the instances of matches extending deep into the final set are rare, we feel that a tie-break at 1212 strikes an equitable balance

between allowing players ample opportunity to complete the match to advantage, while also providing certainty that the match will reach a conclusion in an acceptable timeframe,” Brook said. Other notable long matches include Federer’s victory over Andy Roddick in the 2009 final, winning 16-14 in the fifth set. Tiebreakers were first introduced at Wimbledon in 1971, but they started at 8-8 instead of 6-6 and were not used in deciding sets. Before that, all sets had to be won by two games, including Margaret Court’s 1412, 11-9 win over Billie Jean King in the 1970 final.

Buenos Aires, Argentina (AP) — Buenos Aires could aspire for more than the Youth Olympics it has been staging this month. Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, said that it was

up to Argentina to make a bid for the 2032 Summer Games but added the capital city would be an excellent host. Gerardo Werthein, who heads the Argentine Olympic Committee, said there

was no consensus yet on a 2032 Buenos Aires bid. The next Summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo in 2020, Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028. The Youth Olympics closed on October 18.

Raikkonen wins US Grand Prix as Hamilton’s F1 title bid denied Jim Vertuno Austin, Texas (AP) — Kimi Raikkonen’s second stint with Ferrari has been long on frustration and short on victories. That finally changed last Sunday at the U.S. Grand Prix where the Finnish driver earned his first win in five years, while a good enough day from Ferrari and a late block from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen denied Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton a fifth career Formula One championship. A former world champion with Ferrari, Raikkonen hadn’t won after his return to the team in 2014 while teammate Sebastian Vettel fought Hamilton for the championship the last two seasons. Raikkonen’s most previous win had been with Lotus at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in 2013. He’d driven his Ferrari to three second-place finishes this season before Sunday’s victory. Success finally came with a muscular performance by both driver and car on a day when Hamilton could have clinched the championship

with a sixth U.S. Grand Prix in seven years. Raikkonen seldom cracks a smile or shows much emotion, but he shouted an expletive on the team radio after the final lap. He was then his typical stoic self after a brief victory celebration at the podium. “It’s nice to win. It doesn’t change my life,” Raikkonen said. “The biggest difference is how people look @ you.” For Hamilton, a rare defeat in Austin means his fight with Vettel for the championship continues to this coming weekend at the Mexican Grand Prix. Hamilton finished third and Vettel was fourth to stretch Hamilton’s championship lead to 70 points with three races left. Hamilton is trying to match Argentina’s Juan Manuel Fangio, whose five championships in the 1950s rank second in F1 history. Only Germany’s Michael Schumacher has more with seven. Hamilton could have won the championship Sunday even without a race victory if he’d finished at least eight points ahead of Vettel.

The late blocking move by Verstappen and Vettel’s charge past Mercedes’ Vallteri Bottas in the final laps kept the championship alive. Hamilton said he had to be cautious around Verstappen to avoid a collision. “Championships are not won by doing silly mistakes. I gave him way too much space just to be sure that I didn’t get taken out,” Hamilton said. “The key to me was to make sure I finished ahead of Seb. I don’t care when you win a championship, just that you win.”

NBA suspends Ingram, Rondo, Paul in Lakers-Rockets dustup

Beth Harris Los Angeles (AP) — Lakers teammates Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul of the Rockets were suspended without pay last Sunday for an oncourt fight, with Paul taking the heaviest financial hit. Ingram was suspended four games, Rondo will sit out three games and Paul two games. The NBA handed down the punishments a day after the incident in the fourth quarter at Staples Center.

The penalty was costliest to Paul, who has the highest salary of the trio and was fined a total of $491,782. Paul is president of the NBA Players’ Association. He began serving his suspension Sunday night and wasn’t at the arena when the Rockets lost to the Clippers 115-112. Rondo will be docked a total of $186,207, while Ingram’s total is $158,816. The league said Ingram was suspended for aggressively escalating the altercation and throwing a punch in the direction of

Paul, confronting referee Jason Phillips in a hostile manner, and instigating the overall incident by shoving Rockets guard James Harden. “It is what it is,” Harden said. “I don’t know how to decide how many games.” Rondo was suspended for instigating a physical altercation with Paul, and spitting and throwing multiple punches at the Rockets star. Paul was suspended for poking at and making contact Rondo’s face and throwing multiple punches at him.

Verstappen started 18th after damaging his car in qualifying and worked his way through the field to finish second, his fourth podium finish in six races. “At that turn, I was pushing as much as I could,” Verstappen said. “I was really hanging on.”

Hamilton started on pole position but quickly lost position to Raikkonen on the first turn. The Mercedes tried to squeeze Raikkonen to the inside on the bolt uphill out of the start, but the Ferrari nosed ahead into the left turn into the slingshot back downhill. Vettel was under pressure from the beginning. He started fifth because of a three-spot grid penalty for driving too fast while under a red flag during a Friday practice. Vettel at first looked like he tried to make up too much, too soon. A bump with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo caused Vettel to spin and dropped him to ninth, and the gap looked like it would be too much to overcome. Raikkonen’s ability to keep

Hamilton behind him gave Vettel new life and the chance to make the late pass on Bottas. “Really happy for Kimi,” Vettel said. Raikkonen won the season championship with Ferrari in 2008, a title that came down to the last race of the season. He rejoined Ferrari at a time the Italian team was lagging far behind Mercedes. Raikkonen will be leaving Ferrari to join Sauber after this season, moving from car capable of winning to a team that is rarely competitive. Raikkonen said he has no hard feelings toward Ferrari. “I’m very happy where I’m going. I won the championship with (Ferrari),” Raikkonen said. “As a driver I want different challenges.”

Andrade beats Kautondokwa for WBO middleweight title Boston (AP) — Demetrius Andrade won the vacant World Boxing Organization middleweight title with a 12round unanimous decision over Walter Kautondokwa of Namibia last Saturday night. Andrade (26-0, 16 knockouts) dropped Kautondokwa four times in the first four rounds, once in the first and third, and twice in the fourth. Glen Feldman and Marcus McDonnell scored the fight 120-104. Ramon Cerdan scored it 119-105. In the first round, Andrade dropped Kautondokwa with straight left hand while Kautondokwa was off balance. Andrade sent Kautondokwa to the canvas again in the third with an overhand left that landed on the top of his opponent’s head. The knockdown followed Kautondokwa’s first significant offense of the fight, three punches to the body. In the fourth, Andrade scored two more knockdowns, both with left hands to the head. He kept his distance for the rest of the fight, landing quick combinations to end most rounds and avoiding most of Kautondokwa’s return shots. “After the fourth round, he went into cruise control,” said Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, Andrade’s promoter. Andrade said he entered the fight with an injured left shoulder. “It’s a little injury,” he said. “It bothered me for about a week.” Andrade, of Providence, Rhode Island, previously held the WBO and World Boxing Association junior middleweight titles. He was also a member of the 2008 US Olympic Team.

Kautondokwa, the WBO African middleweight champion, dropped to 17-1 with 16 knockouts. Kautondokwa, 32, was a replacement for Billy Joe Saunders. Saunders tested positive for oxilofrine, a stimulant, in a drug test administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency. The WBO stripped Saunders of his title after the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission declined to give him a license in a hearing on Oct. 9. “It was definitely an adjustment,” Andrade said. “(Kautondokwa) was bigger, taller, longer. Saunders is a slick southpaw. That’s where my amateur background helps. You step on a scale, you fight whoever they tell you to fight.” Hearn said Andrade is likely to fight again in January or February. Eventually, Hearn and Anadrade would like a fight with WBA champion Canelo Alvarez, who recently signed an 11-fight, five-year contract with DAZN, the online streaming platform that

broadcast Andrade’s fight. “Canelo has an 11-fight deal,” Hearn said. “One of them will be against Andrade.” The fight was one of three world title bouts on the card. In the co-main event, 2012 Olympic gold medalist Katie Taylor, of Ireland, retained her International Boxing Federation and WBA female lightweight titles with a 10round unanimous decision over Cindy Serrano, of New York. All three judges scored the bout 100-90 for Taylor. “She was very defensive,” said Taylor, who is now 11-0 with five knockouts. “I expected more from Cindy tonight.” Serrano dropped to 27-5-2, with 10 knockouts. Tevin Farmer, of Philadelphia, defended his IBF super featherweight title, stopping James Tennyson of Belfast, Northern Ireland, in the fifth round. In an IBF featherweight title eliminator, Kid Gallahad of Sheffield, England, won a 12round unanimous decision over Toka Khan Clary of Providence, Rhode Island.

500 MPH wheel-driven record attempt

BMW ramps up investment in China to meet electric demand David McHugh Frankfurt, Germany (AP) - German automaker BMW is taking a majority stake in its China joint venture and investing 3 billion euros ($3.5 billion) in factories there, underscoring the importance of the Chinese market as the company prepares to meet increased demand for electric vehicles. Munich-based BMW said Thursday it would pay 3.6 billion euros ($4.2 billion) to raise its stake in BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. to 75 percent from 50 percent. Alongside the deal, BMW will invest in new and existing plant facilities in Shenyang, increasing production capacity to 650,000 vehicles a year from the early 2020s. The plants produced

400,000 vehicles last year. A new plant will be able to produce fully electric, partly electric, and conventional vehicles on the same line. The Chinese government has issued a new energy vehicle mandate which uses a system of credits to push automakers to increase the share of battery-only and hybrid cars in their sales mix. The policy is expected to increase the number of electrically powered vehicles in the world’s largest car market in coming years. Last year, battery-only and hybrid cars were 2.2 percent of the Chinese market; the International Council on Clean Transportation estimates that could rise to around 4 percent by 2020 under the policy. The country is BMW’s single largest sales market,

with 560,000 vehicles sold there last year. The deal is subject to approval by regulators and shareholders of Chinese partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. BMW is taking advantage of the Chinese government’s plans to end the requirement that foreign auto manufacturers enter into joint ventures with local partners in order to make cars in China. The BMWBrilliance deal is scheduled to close in 2022, the year the requirement ends. “With continuous investment, as well as the development and production of electric vehicles, we underline China’s importance as a dynamic growth market for us,” BMW CEO Harald Krueger said in a statement.

#MeToo invades motor racing For all those thousands of women out there who want to race in F1, some idiots have come up with the W Series, just for women. The new all-female racing series, the W Series, was launched in October, supported by former Grand Prix driver David Coulthard and top designer Adrian Newey, with the stated aim of helping women racers get to Formula One. No woman has competed in Formula One since 1976 but organizers of the W Series hope to provide a platform for them to develop skills before taking on the men further up the motorsport ladder. With a planned start in May 2019, the series will offer free entries to the world’s best female racers who will be together in F3-spec Tatuus cars. A prize fund of 1.5 million US dollars has been allocated to nearly 20 competitors who will be selected purely on merit after tests and appraisals, with the overall winner collecting 500,000 US dollars. Currently the best female race driver is Danica Patrick racing in the US. Organizers said they aimed to stage six 30-minute races at top circuits in Europe, most of which were past Formula One venues, with the identical 1.8 liter Formula Three cars. “At the heart of W Series’ DNA is the firm belief that women can compete equally with men in motorsport.

Turbinator II.

Team Vesco in the US took their Turbinator to Bonneville this month in an attempt to push their own wheel-driven land-speed record into the 500 mph mark. However, the rainy season at Bonneville only allowed Team Vesco one run, and runs in both directions are required to make any pass official. The start of the rainy season at Bonneville, however, kept them satisfied for now. Their first pass in the Turbinator made a pass that measured 493 mph in the fifth mile and that hit an exit speed of 503 mph. While no wheel-driven vehicle has ever made a pass in excess of 500 mph, Vesco said that the Turbinator needed a second pass that measured more than 510 mph to officially set a 500-plus record. Longtime Bonneville racer Don Vesco envisioned the original Turbinator streamliner as a means of capturing the all-wheel-driven land speed record, using a 4,400 horsepower shaft-output internal-combustion turbine engine. On its debut in 2001, Don Vesco accomplished his goal by setting a record

of 458.440 mph; however, he hit an exit speed of 470 mph on one of his runs, leading him to believe that 500 mph was in reach, according to the Team Vesco website. While Don Vesco died of cancer in 2002, his brother Rick vowed to press on toward that goal, and in 2013 revived the Turbinator, this time with a Lycoming T3 turbine engine developing 5,000 horsepower and driving all four wheels through a custom 2:1 reduction gear unit. Rather than pilot it himself, he enlisted Dave Spangler to drive the rechristened Turbinator II. Just as Don Vesco’s 470 mph exit speed spurred him to reach for 500 mph, the 492 mph pass that Spangler made on the way to that September record prodded Team Vesco to return to the salt last week. According to an article in Autoweek, Rick Vesco planned to get to 500 mph by adding 400 horsepower via increasing the fuel and rpms and by tweaking the GPS-controlled software tied into the traction control and electric fuelcontrol systems.

Team Vesco will now have to wait until August 2019 to try and break the elusive 500 mph record. What should also be remembered is that the previous world land speed record for wheel-driven vehicles was held by John Rhodes Cobb (born Dec. 2, 1899, Esher, Surrey, Eng.-died Sept. 29, 1952, Loch Ness, Inverness, Scot.), automobile and motorboat racer, first to reach a speed of 400 mph on land. On Sept. 16, 1947, at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, U.S., he set world speed records (not broken until 1964) for Class A (unlimited engine size) automobiles: 394.196 mph for one mile and 393.825 mph for one kilometre. Each record was the average of speeds attained in a round trip over a measured mile and kilometre; on the return lap he was timed at 403.135 mph for the mile. Both of his world records surpassed standards that he himself had set in 1939. While trying to establish a world speed record for motorboats, he was killed when his jet-propelled craft, travelling at more than 200 mph, disintegrated.

Pencils out – here is the 2019 calendar

Danica Patrick.

However, an all-female series is essential in order to force greater female participation,” organizers said in a statement. Coulthard, winner of 13 Grand Prix between 1995 and 2003, is on the advisory board along with Red Bull’s technical head Newey and both will be involved in the driver training program. However, female competitors are nothing new and in fact, the Oran Park circuit in Australia used to have women only races, called the Powder Puff Derbys. This did not however produce a women only ladder to the top echelons of motor sport. The number of entrants was around half a dozen only. These shrieks for “equality” and PC go contrary to normal physiology and psychology as well as anatomy. The physical effort needed to drive an F1 car requires strength as

well as fitness. (And yes, I have driven one and also many other categories of race cars, so I do know what I am talking about here.) And what will the W Series do about Lady-Boys? Perhaps a special category for them? Should the FIA institute chromosome testing for all drivers? Really, it is all so silly. If the pits are full of women wanting a steer, let them do the same as all the other sexes wanting a drive. Special categories do not foster equality, quite the opposite.

World governing body FIA said following a meeting of its World Motor Sport Council on Friday that 21 races will be held next year, with 11 in Europe, five in Asia, four in the Americas and one in Australia. Dates, races and venues for 2019: March 17: Australia, Melbourne March 31: Bahrain, Sakhir April 14: China, Shanghai April 28: Azerbaijan, Baku May 12: Spain, Barcelona May 26: Monaco, Monaco June 9: Canada, Montreal

June 23: France, Le Castellet June 30: Austria, Spielberg July 14: Britain, Silverstone July 28: Germany, Hockenheim Aug. 4: Hungary, Budapest Sept. 1: Belgium, Spa Sept. 8: Italy, Monza Sept. 22: Singapore, Singapore Sept. 29: Russia, Sochi Oct. 13: Japan, Suzuka Oct. 27: Mexico, Mexico City Nov. 3: United States, Austin Nov. 17: Brazil, Sao Paulo Dec. 1: Abu Dhabi,

Autotrivia quiz Last week I asked about motoring up the highest road in the world, right to the edge of an active volcano. I asked where is it and what height is it above sea level. Remember I am asking for an active volcano. The correct answer is Uturuncu in Bolivia which is 18,923 feet above sea level. This is the highest made road in the world.

So to this week. I mentioned the forthcoming W Series, so let’s look at women drivers. Which woman driver steered a Ford Escort Mk 1 at the famous Bathurst race sponsored by a women’s magazine, and how many times a month was the magazine published? Be the first correct answer to email automania@

Go for a cruise and experience ‘old’ Thailand This week, the Dining Out team had a new experience. Where? “Somewhere.” Read on. Following an invitation from the Cape and Kantary group to review the cuisine at their property on Sichang Island saw us on the 30 minute drive headed towards Sriracha and the ferry to Koh Sichang. The ferry leaves every hour from the Koh Loy Pier and you can park there. The alternative is to park at the Kantary Hotel in Sriracha and they will run you to the pier.

Hotel management knew we were coming and transport was waiting for us on the Koh Sichang docks, amongst the hub bub of locals. No tourists, just Thai people. What a relaxing change! Somewhere is a 20 room boutique hotel, with very friendly staff, a swimming pool and an up-market restaurant called The Verandah. Bright and airy with white and blue décor. The chef is multi-talented and we were regaled with dishes representing the cuisines of Thailand (20, including the

Japan (Yakisoba), Italy (pizza and pasta), and Denmark (Danish pastry). As is our fashion, we selected the wine first and chose a Viu Manent 2017 Chardonnay from Chile. Very enjoyable at B. 180 per glass. All the wines, both red and white, fell in the B. 800-1500 range, including an interesting French Arrogant Frog bubbly 2013 at B. 1,200 for the bottle. We began with a spicy grilled aubergine with shrimp (B. 140), a very Thai and succulent dish to start the evening. This was followed by the classical Southern Thai dish of chicken in masaman curry (B. 140) and a fettuccine smoked salmon in an intriguing pink sauce (B. 180). One of the Dining Out team enjoyed the masaman so much, we ordered another plate. More dishes came for us to try, including a pork cordon bleu (B. 180) which was excellent and the dish of the night as far as I was

concerned, but this was closely followed by a beef sirloin in a pepper sauce (B. 550). The meat was Charolaise premium and not tough at all. And more came, until we were overwhelmed and begged the kitchen to stop. Beautiful food, but too much. However, after a suitable rest we lined up for a savory crepes Suzette made at the table, and I do like a bit of theatre with my food.

If you’ve ever wanted somewhere to relax, I can recommend Somewhere on Koh Sichang. The antithesis to Pattaya’s noise, glamor and glitz, Koh Sichang is laid back, relaxed, with some friendly people sitting outside their wooden houses left over from when Rama V ruled the Kingdom. Wonder at that time in history when the King’s summer residence, an entire teak wood palace,

could be dismantled and rebuilt in Bangkok, to make sure the threatening French did not get it! The ferry trip from Koh Loy Pier (Jarin) is B. 50 (one of Thailand’s great bargains) and takes around 45 minutes and brings you to the Koh Sichang pier where you can catch an enlarged Tuk-Tuk (known as a Skylab) to Somewhere Hotel only 10 minutes away, telephone 038 109 400 and get the full details. Or book beforehand through GM Jason, and Somewhere will have your transport waiting. I believe it makes for a great holiday with inexpensive room rates Sun - Thu. Stuffed Eggplant – from Burma? Like many Burmese dishes, this dish is quite spicy, but you can reduce the chilies and garlic to suit the tastes of your guests. It can be produced under 30 minutes and all ingredients are readily available in Pattaya. The final baking in the oven is just to keep the filling together, which is why the cheese has been added to the original Burmese recipe.

Cooking Method Put eggplants in water, bring to boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Cut in halves and scoop out the flesh and chop it and put to one side. In the wok add the oil and then place the chopped prawns, onion, garlic, chilies, ginger, lemongrass, turmeric, salt and eggplant and sauté over a medium heat for five minutes. Now divide and place the sautéed mixture in the hollowed out eggplant shells and then sprinkle cheese over the top. Bake in a hot oven for five minutes. Ingredients Serves 4 Eggplants 4 medium Prawns (deshelled, chopped) 250 gm Onion chopped fine 1 large Garlic chopped 5 cloves Red chilies (remove seeds, chopped) 2 Fresh ginger 3 cm Lemongrass (chopped) 10 cm Turmeric powder 1 tspn Salt 2 tspns Cooking oil 2 tspns Grated cheese ½ cup

Anderson wears green at 23rd TQ Masters

Richard Anderson wears the Green Jacket and holds his trophy after winning the 23rd annual T.Q. Masters golf classic.

Steve Ellison Phoenix Gold was the venue on Friday, October 19 for the 23rd annual T.Q. Masters golf classic, presented by The Tahitian Queen rock n’ roll bar. For those who don’t know, T.Q. is Pattaya’s oldest go-go bar that opened its doors in 1978 and has been at the same address on Beach Road all these years.

The coveted and traditional Green Jacket in this tournament always goes to the player with the best individual stableford score and this year’s contest was the closest it has ever been. It had been two years since the T.Q. Masters had been held, out of respect to the passing of His Majesty the late King, and the resumption this year was much anticipated. There were 70

contestants in 3 divisions playing the Ocean and Mountain courses. This even included 18 who make the trip down from Bangkok, with a big thanks to Mark Guthrie and the crew. There was a very organized send off in the morning and the weather was brilliant. For all the rain and lightning around, the players only had to endure a mere splash for just five minutes. The golf course was in excellent condition and the new putting greens with the white picket fencing looked all pro. There were loads of volunteers for the day, with Bill, Bernie and Queeny passing out the on-course beers helped by Pom, Bee, Su and Nam who doled out the tournament shirts at check-in with Phil and Woody. They also did a great job churning out those legendary Bloody Caesars at the starting gate. After the round, everyone headed back to the Tahitian

Queen for the BBQ buffet dinner provided by The Golf Club on Soi L.K. Metro. Pork mega-ribs, chicken satay, sliders, chili con carne and the best Buffalo chicken wings in town were happily washed down with happy hour beers from the bar. TGC’s own Capt. Phil gave the best kind of presentation (short) aided by Mama-san Ead passing out the trophies. As mentioned earlier, this was a very closely contested tournament and amazingly, we had all three division winners turn in cards of 43 stableford points. Richard Anderson (H/cap 9) won the A Flight on 43 and was five clear of Graham Rudd (9) in second on 38 while Trevor Harvey (10) placed third with 35. Daniel Tobler (19) topped the B Flight with his 43pointer, David Dawson (12) was close behind in second on 41 and Ross

Schiffren (20) had another fine round for third place with 40 points. Pierre Zbinden (23) was the third player to notch 43 points and won the C Flight ahead of Brian Reid (28) in second on 40 and Dale Drader (28) third with 35. The Mountain track was used as the count-back decider and Richard Anderson took the Green Jacket courtesy of his better score on that nine. Near pins were taken by (A Flight) Steve Snelgrove, Trevor Harvey, Richard Anderson; (B Flight) David

Dawson, Daniel Tobler, Paul Ovens; (C Flight) Brian Reid, Nigel Henry, Dale Drader, while the Long-Putt (9th on the Ocean course) sponsored by Jack Levy was measured at 20-foot 8 inches and tagged by our Aussie mate Butch Furneaux. This drinking tournament with a golfing problem was once again a great success and thanks go out to all who participated and to all sponsors and helpers. You are all invited to the T.Q. Masters 24th edition next year. Can it top 70 players? Let’s give it a try!
